hile writing and recording his new album, Jerrod Niemann immersed himself in the history of country music. A student of music theory and production-he majored in Performance Art Technology at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas-Jerrod pondered a question that is heard more and more frequently these days: Just what exactly constitutes country? His answer to that query can be found in the musically and technically groundbreaking Free The Music. “This album is my interpretation of how I feel about country right now,” Jerrod says.

The follow-up to his Sea Gayle Records/Arista Nashville debut Judge Jerrod & the Hung Jury, which debuted at No. 1 and yielded the No. 1 hit “Lover, Lover” and the Top 5 single “What Do You Want,” Jerrod’s sophomore album emphasizes the early instruments that have shaped the genre: acoustic guitars and bass, fiddles, and even horns.

“The pedal steel guitar has come to define country music, but there were years and years of country being made before that instrument was even invented. Horns have been in country going back to the 1920s. And fiddles and other string instruments date back even further. I took all those things and put them on Free The Music,” Jerrod explains. “I made this record in an effort to try and mix 1927 with 2027, but I didn’t want to disregard 100 years of what people have already done musically. Instead, I wanted to take that and do it in a way

that is also representative of the future.”

The result is an adventurous release that redefines the listening experience. A “headphones album” if ever there was one, Free the Music is a sonic journey through a multitude of styles, including country, rock, honky-tonk, Dixieland jazz and reggae.

While exploring these sounds, the Kansas native says he sought inspiration in the outside-the-lines approach of two seminal outlaws. “Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings were very progressive in their day, and they were getting harassed by people who said, ‘Hey, that’s not country.’ But the mistake many artists make when they first come to Nashville is that they want to be those guys so badly that they get stuck in time. It’s our duty to have our own voice and come up with our own way of saying something,” Jerrod stresses. “Icons like Alabama and Ronnie Milsap did that by using pop melodies. But when you hear their songs today, they’ve become country classics.

Those artists stepped out, and I hope fans will understand that that was my goal too. I want the album to push you out of any musical comfort zone.”

Jerrod took each of those big steps with great care, painstakingly fine-tuning every song on Free The Music with his visionary co-producer Dave Brainard.

n the early fall of 1973 The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. Their debut album had already spawned numerous hits. The bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent release of their Greatest Hits album, in traditional vinyl form, is a time capsule from that period. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were a bunch of young guys who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know any boundariesâ&#x20AC;? says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. More than four decades later, the new vinyl Greatest Hits release takes us back to the early years of The Marshall Tucker Band, both literally and physically.

Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of the Marshall Tucker Band sound. Current members include the highly respected drummer B.B. Borden, a former member of both Motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Finest and The Outlaws, multi instrumentalist Marcus Henderson of Macon, Georgia, plays flute, saxophone and keyboards in addition to lead and background vocals, Pat Elwood on bass guitar, and Rick Willis on lead guitar and vocals, both of Spartanburg SC, are disciples of the Caldwell Brothers. Acclaimed lead guitarist and vocalist Chris Hicks recently rejoined the band after a two-year absence. Together they present a powerful stage presence as they continue to tour the country and continue to be powerful force in the world of music.

The Marshall Tucker Band got its start in Spartanburg, S.C. when Gray teamed up with Tommy Caldwell and Toy Caldwell, Paul T. Riddle, George McCorkle and Jerry Eubanks, borrowing the name â&#x20AC;&#x153;Marshall Tuckerâ&#x20AC;? from a piano tuner whose name was found on a key ring in their old rehearsal space. In 1972, they signed with Capricorn Records, the same label that guided The Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie, and others to national fame. The MTB opened shows for The Allman Brothers in 1973, and the following year, they began to headline their own shows across America due to the platinum-plus sales of their debut album.

In years to come, The Marshall Tucker Band would wow critics and influence major country acts like Alabama, The Kentucky Headhunters, Confederate Railroad, and Travis Tritt with its definitive blend of rock, rhythm & blues, jazz, country, and gospel. Now, thanks to the expanding scope of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s music, a new generation of fans is learning what the rest of their fans have known for so long- that good music knows no boundaries. Along the way, the band has recorded twenty two studio albums, three DVDs, three live albums and many compilations.

In 1980 Tommy Caldwell died as a result of injuries from an auto accident. In 1984 Toy Caldwell, George McCorkle, and Paul Riddle decided to retire. Doug Gray and Jerry Eubanks with the blessings of the other three continued to record and perform as the Marshall Tucker Band. 1n 1993 Toy Caldwell, who wrote the majority of their songs, passed away, as did George McCorkle in 2007. Jerry Eubanks retired in 1996 and Doug Gray continues to lead the current band of fine musicians winning new young fans as well as satisfying the loyal fans of several generations.

Years of rigorous tour schedules earned the band the respect of critics and countless dedicated fans. With hit singles like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heard It In a Love Song,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fire On The Mountain,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t You See,â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Take The Highway,â&#x20AC;? The Marshall Tucker Band earned seven gold and three platinum albums while they were on the Capricorn Records label. During the 90_s, the MTB scored four hit singles on Billboardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s country chart and one on Billboardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gospel chart. Their music has also been featured on the soundtracks of movies such as Smokey and the Bandit, Blow, The Pursuit of D.B. Based out of Southern California, this group of consummate musicians and soulful rockers embody the talent and energy of the original band, who sadly lost members much too soon. Lyvyn Skynyrd evokes Ronnie Van Zant’s profound and powerful vocals, while highlighting the dual lead guitar riffs that Lynyrd Skynyrd made famous. They celebrate the entire catalogue including the hits like “Simple Man,” “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Tuesday’s gone,” as well as deeper cuts such as “The Needle and the Spoon” and “Poison Whiskey.”

Authenticity to the music is at the core of every Lyvyn Skynyrd performance and each musician truly personifies an original member. Lead singer Andrew Mazzarelli (Ronnie Van Zant) channels the power and humanity that Andrew felt when he first saw Ronnie perform. Fellow vocalists Shaun Bernadou (Leslie Hawkins), Deborah Angelo (Jo Jo Billingsley) and Liz Parks (Cassie Gaines) bring additional depth and charisma to the stage, while bass player Gregory J. Lemke (Leon Wilkeson) and drummer Max Burnette (Artimus Pyle) provide a strong rhythmic backbone that enhances the experience. Rick Dekker (Steve Gaines) and Neil Nyssen (Gary Rossington) expertly intertwine impressive guitar licks with vitality and wisdom. Nyssen also captures the trademark slide guitar that turned songs such as “Free Bird” into anthems. Roger Mielke (Billy Powell) does an exceptional job providing a Southern rock vibe on the keys.

Fortunately, no one is forcing him to. Jerrod is free to pursue both of his passions on stage and in the writing room, using his gift with a lyric and melody to free the music, expand peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s minds, and deliver an album that, while occasionally unconventional, is undeniably country. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For me, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about the song. You can put all the bells and whistles on an album that you want, but if the songs arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to work,â&#x20AC;? Jerrod says, discussing the versatility of country music. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can take all of these songs, go into a studio and record them with Nashvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing studio musicians, and Free The Music would sound just like a modern-country record. And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fine. But I like to experiment.â&#x20AC;?

Jerrod cracks a wry grin at this admission.

Clearly, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comfortable with his role as a musical scientist-an artist who absorbs all styles and sounds, and forms them into his own creation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When your ears are always on, everything seeps into your brain,â&#x20AC;? he says with a laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And my ears are always on.â&#x20AC;?

But no matter how old we get, we can still rock your socks off.” Gray also notes that people have gotten “married and buried” to classic MTB songs like “Desert Skies” and “Can’t You See”. After 40 years, The Marshall Tucker Band continues to be played on classic rock and country radio, and they have never stopped touring.
