First one on the ice...! The neighbourhood skating rink where kids get together for a hockey game or for a bit of fun after school, parents holding their little ones during their first outing on the ice, as stressing as it is exciting, grandparents who have stayed as young at heart as in body fly over the frozen surface. Memories of the past? No, more like the latest craze! There’s nothing like an outing on the ice in the beautiful winter sunshine. Wearing comfortable skates the whole family can really profit from this activity. So, to make it as enjoyable as possible, here are a few little tricks for young and old alike.
Weight is an important factor in the choice of a skate: the heavier the skater the more rigid the skate should be. Ankles work hard in this sport and need as much support as possible. Never buy children’s skates, which are on sale at the end of the season, for the following year. Children grow at an unpredictable rate and skates should always be the right size when the time comes to practice this sport. You could always buy and sell skates, at a shop which deals in the exchange of sporting goods, during those years when your children are growing quickly. For adults, it’s recommended to purchase skates one size smaller than their shoes so the boot moulds perfectly to the foot. A woman who doesn’t do figure skating can either have the first tooth of the skate filed down or buy hockey skates.
A winter for the birds! During the winter there are two ways of admiring wild birds in their natural habitat: go to where they live or bring them to you. In either case, you can start by reading up on the subject. Some books describe birdlife in the forests and fields; others talk about birds in towns and on the roadsides. All of these books will emphasize the importance of having a good telescope designed specifically for bird watching. The difference between a telescope and binoculars is mainly the limited magnifying capacity of binoculars. They are perfect for walks and locating distant objects, but don’t have the necessary power to really see birds from a distance. There is a huge selection of models available which has no limit apart from your budget. Find out from a professional what would be the best choice of telescope for your needs. To bring the birds to you there’s nothing better than hanging a big ball of fat somewhere in your garden. To make some of these balls you will
need about 500g of fat (margarine or shortening), 1 kg of mixed bird seed, some string and an onion or fruit net, preferably green in colour. In a big bowl, soften the fat and add the seeds, mixing everything by hand. Make some nice, round balls, about the size of the palm of your hand. Refrigerate until the next day. Put each ball in a piece of the netting, tie it up with a piece of string, hang the balls on nearby branches and wait for your special visitors!
To enjoy bird watching in the great outdoors, it’s important to have a good-quality telescope, specifically designed for this pastime.
Keep your feet nice and warm while skating by wearing only one pair of dry, insulated socks.
Warm hands, warm heart... thanks to a healthy diet! Contrary to the saying “Cold hands, warm heart”, to have a warm heart, the hands also have to be warm. But during the winter, it’s not always easy to protect the hands, feet, nose and ears from the cold. It’s all very well putting on our warmest coats, pulling our hats down over our ears, when it’s cold, we’re cold. To warm ourselves up, there’s nothing better than a healthy diet adapted to the time of year and some good, hot, nourishing meals. To stay warm, our bodies need proteins and minerals. It doesn’t mean we have to eat more than during the summer, just to keep on eating well while adapting our menus: choose healthy foods, full of vitamins and minerals, stay active and drink lots of liquids. Tasty vegetable and cheese dishes, rich and creamy soups, whole-grain pasta smothered with your favourite sauces, comforting meat stews. As always, water is the best choice to stay well hydrated. Natural sugars from fruits and vegetables give us all the energy necessary to do winter sports. Bananas are one of the most energy-rich foods available. And to be sure of not getting an attack of the munchies during a trip to the ski-hill for example, be sure to bring a bag of dried fruits and nuts with you. Once you’re back home, treat yourself to a nice hot chocolate which will warm your heart as well as your hands! Natural sugars from fruits and vegetables give us all the energy necessary to do winter sports.
A skating rink just for us! Making your own skating rink brings some advantages as well as a few obligations. So before all the fun, the work! First of all, the size and the site of your future skating rink have to be decided on. Of course, it’s better to choose a flat area, close to a source of water and electricity, which will allow you to make the most of it in the evening and to water it without too much difficulty.
warm rays of the sun from damaging the ice, surround the skating rink with a snow bank measuring at least 60 cm. To have a really nice skating rink it’s very important to water it. Apply a thin layer of water several times, using a fine spray; water in strips, width-wise, until the entire base is saturated. Once the first layer has frozen, water again to create a second layer. Repeat this operation until the ice is 6 to 10 cm thick.
A surface in asphalt, concrete or grass will do the trick. You can buy a starting kit containing polyethylene sheets or vapour barrier and a list of instructions to help you do the job.
The ideal temperature to water your skating rink is between -7 0C and -18 0C. Generally speaking, the milder the temperature, the finer the spray has to be and the less water you’ll have to use. If cracks appear in the ice, fill them with snow rather than with water. After a while you’ll need to use less and less water to maintain the surface of the ice. And that’s it... Let the fun begin!
The basic preparations are an important part of the work. Pack down about 10 cm of snow with the help of a shovel or a lawn roller. To stop the
