99th Indy 500 offers something different By Matt Anderson matt.anderson@flyergroup.com

INDIANAPOLIS — Last year’s Indianapolis 500 was a bit of an anomaly. Ryan Hunter-Reay was the first American to win the race since 2006 and won in style — six-tenths of a second ahead of Helio Castroneves for the second closest final in 500 history. The race was also fairly clean until four late cautions. From lap one through lap 149 the race stayed green. It was the longest green flag period dating back to 1976. It was also the first time in five years the race did not

end on a caution. Can this year’s ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing’ be just as unique? With the events leading up to this year’s race; from the new aero kits, to the number of ugly crashes in practices by Helio Castroneves to James Hinchcliffe, who knows what is in store for the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday. “You’re never ready enough for this race,” said Simon Pagenaud, who starts in the front row Sunday. “There’s so many things — nine to ten pit stops, a yellow can fall out at

the wrong time, something can happen in pit lane. It’s crazy in pit lane. It can go all right up until the race and something can happen at the last moment where you don’t expect it.” Scott Dixon will lead the pack after taking the pole last weekend with a time of 226.760. Will Power and Pagenaud complete Row 1. “For me, I’d definitely rather start at the front than back there,” Power said. “I looked at Hunter-Reay last year, and he obviously had a very strong car and a strong engine. But in a way, it was good for him to have to chop through all that traffic, so when he got to clean air he

was just absolutely solid and dialed in and understood how to pass cars. “For him it was almost a blessing in disguise because when he got there, no one was going to beat him.” Tony Kanaan, Castroneves and Justin Wilson fill out Row 2. Castroneves will once again look to become the fourth driver to win a fourth 500. Sebastien Bourdais, Marco Andretti and Josef Newgarden fill out Row 3. Last year’s winner, Hunter-Reay, will start in 16th. Qualifying times were overall down from last year, but the new aero kits are expected to make race day

faster. Last year at 100 laps, the race set a record for average speed at 211.871. Power expects the same kind of racing with the new aero kits. “If anything you get closer in the corner, so it would be exactly the same passing for the lead, same stuff,” he said. “Ever yone will be packed up. No different. “I wish you could draft a little bit better so you could pass, and I think this car went too far the other way where you can’t get away like if you had a good car. It’s tough to find that balance, but whatever it is, you’ve got to learn how to

be really good at that and good at the racing if you want to win.” The new aero kits bring speed but as a handful of drivers have experienced, safety remains an issue. “Safety is obviously a big part of the sport, and it’s a big part of motor racing in general,” Dixon said. “The speeds are definitely up, and I think when you have manufacturers spending money on trying to make the cars go faster with horsepower and aero kits, that’s going to create these bigger speeds.” The 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 is slated to start at 12:15 p.m. Sunday. 5250 E. IndyCar made correct safety decision ❚ Indy 500 and Little 500 on tap this weekend

T

here is an old saying that goes ‘You can’t win for losing’ and that is certainly the case for Verizon IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials with the Indianapolis 500 this Sunday. Columnists that rarely cover auto racing, except when there is activity at IMS, are complaining about the decision to change the rules for last weekend’s qualifying sessions in the name of safety. These same columnists would want to ban racing if God forbid a driver was killed. It’s always easier to be negative. During practice sessions, three of the new aerodynamic equipped cars make contact with the outside wall and flipped. None of the drivers were injured. In my opinion, the right decision was made in the name of safety for the drivers and fans to lower the engine boost and require teams to use race set-ups for qualifying. The result was that the speeds were down from the 233 mph range to 227 for qualifying. Can anyone tell if a car is traveling at 227 mph versus 233 mph just by observing? The answer is no. Of course, we would all like to see a new track

In my opinion, the right decision was made in the name of safety for the drivers and fans to lower the engine boost and require teams to use race set-ups for qualifying. record during qualifications for the Indianapolis 500, but not at the risk of a driver’s safety. Unfortunately, James Hinchcliffe crashed on Monday and suffered a leg injury that will keep him out of the race. It appeared a front suspension part broke on his Honda powered car. I’m expecting another awesome Indianapolis 500, which will be the fifth in a row. Unlike NASCAR Sprint Cup races where the leader is rarely passed, look for plenty of action at IMS. I don’t know why, but I

believe that Helio “Spiderman” Castroneves is going to win his fourth Indianapolis 500. My long shots to win are Ed Carpenter, which would be an extremely popular victory in Indiana, and Honda driver Graham Rahal, who is coming off consecutive runner-up finishes. The 67th running of the Pay Less Little 500 presented by UAW-GM is Saturday at Anderson Speedway with action at the track the rest of the week. The Little 500 takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday. Crawfordsville native Jacob Wilson will be looking for his third consecutive Little 500 win in a sprint car carrying sponsorship from Mitch Smith Auto Service. To win the Little 500, a driver and team have to be at the top of their game when it comes to pit strategy and needs some luck, avoiding incidents on the track. The list of contenders for a win is lengthy including former winners Shane Cottle, Chris Windom and Bryan Tyler along with Wilson. I’m looking for Cottle, who has been close to winning the past two years until a mechanical problem ended a strong run, to win his second Little 500 and another win for team owner Larry Contos.

Daly glad to be back at Indy By Ken de la Bastide CNHI News Service

SPEEDWAY — What a difference a year has made for Noblesville resident Conor Daly. A year ago, Daly was watching activity at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on a computer while racing in Europe. Earlier this year, it was announced that Daly, the son of Indy 500 veteran Derek Daly, had secured the funding and ride with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for a second run in the Indianapolis 500. “It was killer to miss it last Daly year,” he said. “I was really hurting watching every session on my computer while I was in Europe.” Daly, 23, made his first Indianapolis 500 start in 2013 finishing 22nd after starting 31st. He qualified 25th in the Fuled by Bacon Special for the race on Sunday with a four-lap average of 223.482 mph. “It’s always exciting to be here in Indy whether you’re racing or not,” he said before qualifying. “It has been an interesting week for everyone as we’ve seen with Helio (Castroneves) and Josef (Newgarden) having issues.

RACE CAR: Conor Daly races around the track in his No. 43 Honda. “The cars are on the edge, really tough to drive. Just go for it and trust it for four laps.” Daly said there is a big difference in the Verizon IndyCar Series new cars and the older car which was much more forgiving. “The older aero package was much more drivable,” he commented. “This is so knife edge, you make one set-up change and you’re going to crash. Make a change the other way and you’re too slow; there is such a small zone where the car works.” Daly said the ride with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports is an opportunity of a lifetime. “We had an up and down (last) week,” he said. “We were hoping to be fast four laps, but here it’s all about the race.” Daly, a Heritage Christian High School graduate

who grew up in Noblesville, is paired with SPM’s full-season drivers, James Hinchcliffe and James Jakes, in a three-car lineup fielded by Sam Schmidt and Ric Peterson. He drove road course events for Schmidt’s Indy Lights team in ‘13 (he won the Long Beach, Calif., race). “Been a long road to get back to this point,” Daly said on Twitter. “Can’t wait to compete in my HOME race again.” His father, Derek Daly, is a former Formula One and IndyCar driver and longtime motorsports broadcaster. Derek Daly twice won the 12 Hours of Sebring and competed in six Indy 500s. Conor Daly said his father has been “at the front of the fight” in trying to get him back in an IndyCar ride for Indianapolis over the last few months.
