Katharine Boardman writes: Calling all parents. Madfest is rapidly approaching and we need donations. Teenage books, computer games, DVD's ,CD's, vinyl, seedlings, plants, homemade produce ‐ jams, honey, chutney, lemon curd and prizes for the tombola and raffle. All donations are welcome. Please help make this the most successful Madfest ever. Donations can be left in the Wren Office at the school. The school’s mobile friendly website now carries the exam timetable. If you go to the regular school website from a mobile device you will get the mobile screen rather than the usual one and will be able to access the exam timetable for this summer’s GCSE and GCE public exams.

Course outlines for the new academic year will be posted on the school website and the Parent’s page of the MLE during the half term break. However, changes to exam specifications, following the Department for Education’s GCSE reform and the move towards linear exams, has meant that detailed specifications are not available for all courses being started in June 2012. MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER A Special Edition for each Year Group! Welcome to the June edition of Insight. As always you will find this edition full of information highlighting many of the achievements of our incredible students over the last few months. We hope that you will get a sense of the amazing range of activities and opportunities that our students benefit from at Highgate Wood School thanks to our dedicated staff. We have also decided that at this time of timetable roll, we would make this June edition special by doing a bespoke edition for each year group to include a message from the respective Heads of Learning. New Timetable Starts on June 11th – New Year Group Names The new timetable will be in operation from 8:35am Monday 11th June after half term . As well as the curriculum advantages that I referred to in the March edition of Insight, the other bonus for students is the progression into their new year groups. From Monday 11th June, we will consider that our students have graduated one year up – hence our Year 7s will be the new Year 8; our Year 8s will be the new Year 9; our Year 9s will be the new Year 10, our Year 10s will be the new Year 11. Our current Year 11 students who have begun their public exams will be known as Year 11 Exam Group or Year 11 Plus. We believe that this is more than just a label as it gives students the additional boost of feeling a year older. Please be sure to remember their new year group when communicating with the school about your child after half term as their tutor group will also change name. Post 16 Applications & Places Offered – An Update We are very pleased with the number of offers that we have been able to make for places in the 6th Form. Having been involved in the interviews

personally, I know just how well our students presented themselves and I have been impressed with their maturity in discussing their futures. Recently, myself and Nick Charlesworth (Head of 6th Form) visited Year 11s in their tutor periods to give them an update on recruitment and respond to questions. Looking at the last three years, we have good reason to be pleased. The table below shows the pattern of offers that have been made to students interviewed for a place in the HWS 6th Form over the last three years – including the current Year 11. The BLUE bars represent offers for HWS Year 11 students. The RED bars show the number of places offered to students who do not currently attend Highgate Wood School

You can see that the number of places offered to Year 11 Highgate Wood School students has increased over the last three years with a record number of 164 offers this year. Our feeling that our Sixth Form is becoming more popular both within and beyond Highgate Wood is also evidenced by the number of offers that we have made to Year 11s who currently attend other schools across Haringey and beyond. With 98 places offered, we have almost doubled the places offered in each of the previous two years. In order to deal with what we expect to be a high demand for places at the start of the autumn term, we have taken the decision to hold our first day of enrolment on the 23rd August – the day of the GCSE results. We anticipate that this will give HWS year 11s the first opportunity to secure places onto their choice of courses. June 2012

We are very proud of our Year 11s, we have every faith in their ability to do well in their exams and we look forward to seeing a large number of them thriving in the 6th Form from this September. Year 11 and Post 16 Students – Preparation for Exams Year 11 and Post 16 students have been working hard for weeks now in preparation for their public exams. In the last issue of Insight I shared with you the GCSE prediction for our Year 11s – showing that we expect to improve on last year’s record high. The same is true of our Year 13 students as shown in the table below.

We are confident that our Year 13s will do themselves and the school proud by achieving excellent results and more importantly securing their chosen university places for the autumn term. INSET Afternoons – An Explanation A number of parents have recently written into the school raising queries about the number of early closures that we have for afternoons that have been designated for staff training. For the absence of confusion, I will try to clarify the situation. Every school in the country allocates the equivalent of five whole school days per academic year where the school will be closed to students to give time for staff development and training. This is valuable time where staff have an opportunity to develop aspects of their practice and hone their skills to improve the quality of provision for our students. The way in which those five days are allocated will vary from school to school in terms of when those days are calendared and how they are broken up. June 2012

This year at Highgate Wood we have allocated four whole school days where the school is closed to students. The other day (equivalent to five hours of lessons) has been allocated as five one hour INSET afternoons, i.e. five days during the year when school finishes at lunchtime to give staff one hour (plus some time after school) to utilise various training opportunities. Importantly, the overall time that has been allocated to staff training and development is consistent with what is provided for by law (and what it has always been at HWS). I hope that this helps to clarify any confusion on this matter. Good Luck to Staff who are leaving… Unfortunately we will be losing a few members of staff this half term. Sally Wynn (English) is leaving at the end of this week to begin her maternity leave, but will not be returning to HWS. Ameena Riaz (ICT) has been on maternity leave, and has decided to focus on family life and pursue other interests; hence she will not be returning. We are greatly indebted to both of them for the excellent contribution that they have both made to the school. The students and staff will miss them and their influence significantly. Also, Cai Jia Eng (Art) and Bola Awoyemi (ICT) have been with us on long term supply covering maternity leaves. Both will be leaving HWS at the end of this week. I want to thank them for their very positive contribution and hard work. They have both done a great job! We wish them all the very best for the future! ... And Finally – Thank you for your support! MAGAZINE PRODUCTION—A YEAR 7 PROJECT Ms Pinnick writes: In English lessons, Year 7 students have been studying the forms and conventions of magazines. They have produced sample pages for their own magazines. 7T were set a challenge to launch a new magazine called KIDZ aimed at 10 to 14 year old boys and girls. They worked in groups to develop their ideas and come up with sample pages. I have been very impressed by the students’ ideas, their attention to the forms and conventions and the way in which they have learned to use the software program InDesign. I am certain a professional career in the media awaits many of them.

MODEL UN CONFERENCE

MUSIC NOTICES Ms Hassan writes: If you are wishing to cancel individual Music Instrumental Lessons for your child from September – I need to know NOW either by email or in writing. Please note that invoices for September will be sent out late August/beginning of September and must be paid BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER. There is only 1 month now for payment to be made UNLESS prior arrangement has been made with Mrs Hassan to pay by instalments or by post‐dated cheques. This MUST be arranged prior to September. Orchestra will re‐start on TUESDAY lunchtimes at 1.30‐2.00pm the WEEK AFTER HALF TERM ‐ 19th JUNE and will be led by Mr Harlow. Music Theory Classes will commence in September (if demand is high enough) for students who are EITHER working towards their Grade 4 or higher in an instrument OR are considering studying A‐Level Music, in which case Grade 5 Theory is essential. If you might be interested in attending these Theory Classes please register your name with Mrs Hassan in the Drum Office. Lessons will be scheduled during a lunchtime and will last for 30 minutes.

Mr O’Connor writes: Selected students from Highgate Wood School will again be attending the summer’s London Model UN Conference. The theme of this year’s conference is the Arms Trade Treaty and will be held at Mulberry School for Girls on 12th and 13th July. There has already been one meeting to select delegates from the current Year 9 and Year 10.

DEBATE MATE FOR YEAR 7s Ms Green writes: Debating Club will be open for our current Year 7s from after half term. The Year 8 debating team have been preparing a training programme which they will be running every Wednesday after school from 3:15 ‐4:15. Anyone who’d like to join needs to sign up in the LRC as there are limited spaces. Well done to our Year 8 team who beat the teachers in a debate on mobile phones in Year 7 assembly! And a big thank you to Mr Ashman, Ms Wilson, Mr O’Connor and Mr Fitzgerald who bravely took to the stage to compete against our Year 8 debating champions! June 2012

SAM LEARNING PROJECT Mr Ashman writes: Highgate Wood School has teamed up with SAM Learning to see how much their on‐line revision tools can help support learning. SAM is already well established in the education market with more than 2 million students using its resources, which consist mainly of interactive revision exercises. We are hoping to exploit these existing resources ‐ which cover most subjects ‐ and also see how the system can bring benefits to develop independent learning and consolidate understanding in other ways.

Our plans include working to integrate it within our MLE, making SAM Learning available to students who are off school for some reason and also involving students not simply in answering questions but actually putting together possible revision tasks and exercises. All Highgate Wood School students have now got accounts, and details will be issued after half term. For those who wish to go onto the site early they should visit www.samlearning.com. The Centre ID is N8HW and their username is your date of birth followed by your initials. So Alex Patel who was born on 1st March 1998 would be 010398AP. The password is the same as the username.

ART AT THE END OF YEAR 9 Miss Eng writes: Year 9 have come a long way this year in being independent with their ideas, seeing the conceptual side of Art as well as practising their skills. They have created work that really shows their own personalities: unique, humorous and engaged with the world around them. Well done Year 9, we look forward to seeing what you bring us at GCSE level!

Elena Baldwin 9D: The original painting 'American Gothic' was about the traditional roles of men and women. I changed it by switching the roles. The woman is now wearing a suit and holding the pitchfork showing that she's the one working. the man is wearing an ordinary T‐shirt showing he's staying at home. My version of the painting shows equality of men and women. June 2012

Felix Brown 9T: The assignment was to create an advert for "you" emphasising typography from the media and to include your personality in the piece eg hobbies, interests etc. I chose to use typography from the Guardian to include a sense of education and intelligence. Due to the fact that I was dressed up smartly for the photograph I chose to create a character that is rich sophisticated and very musical.

Alexandra Burgess 9G: I incorporated an advertisement into a portrait I drew.

Malik Newman Belfor 9D: More and more people are leaving traditional jobs to seek big money in the city.

Josie Shand 9W: I have changed the painting 'Portrait of Pope Innocent X' to show the change in what society respects.

Blue Weiss 9G: I think the picture and captions reflect my hobbies as well as representing the generation I'm part of.

Lily Kelly 9T: This painting was adapted from 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. The change to a woolly hat, coat and large earring signifies the change in fashion in the two different eras even though I used the same colours. June 2012

COMENIUS PROJECT—ESTONIA VISIT

Ms Osborne writes: Eight Year 10 students had the opportunity to take part in another highly successful trip to Estonia as part of the Comenius project. With healthy active lifestyle as the theme, the focus in Estonia was on international sports. The eight students had the chance to explore and play a variety of different sports from 6 other European countries as well as presenting cricket as the representative sport of England and teaching the others how to play it. All students took part in the games with great enthusiasm “Learning different version of games was fun and made it easy to get to know other students” In addition to enjoying with sporting activities the students participated in a number of visits to local sites of interest to experience Estonian culture and

lifestyle, including visiting the capital city of Tallinn and the traditional town of Vatsellina. “I didn’t realise Estonia was so old all the buildings were really different to back in London” Now we are back in England the students will be presenting the new sports they have learnt to KS3 students and preparing the PE department to introduce them in lessons for Year 7 and 8.

ART ON THE LANGUAGES CORRIDOR

Mme Lacroix and Mr Marriott write: Modern Foreign Languages have been working with the Art department to redesign the languages corridor using famous cultural elements of France, Germany and Spain. This has been an ongoing project and this term Year 8 students have been honing their stencil painting and linguistic skills as they brighten up the space at the top of Adams building and develop it as an area for learning. Many thanks go out to Libby Archer, Martha Berkmann, Gabriel Clarke, Beth Gosschalk, Hedy Irvine, Fabian Marks, Colette Rogers, Emma Skinner and Yoshiki Vernon. June 2012

GCSE exhibition art & design design & technology This year's exhibition was a great celebration of all the hard work our GCSE students have put into these subjects over the last two years. The event was well attended, with parents having the opportunity to see where all the hard work has been leading to. Many visitors commented on how the level of work was extremely high and were impressed by the huge range and breadth of pieces on display. It included painting, a range of animation work, photographic work, drawing and miniature sculptures, as well as origami sculpture and installation work, and much, much more. In the Design Technology section Product Design a wide range of desk lamps designed in the style of Memphis Milano were displayed. Both Textiles and Food Technology also exhibited work of a very high standard showing the broad range of our students' design skills. We are very proud of our cohort this year, and how they have raised the standard of the show. The breadth of work was truly astounding. Some students were awarded a prize for their dedication to their subjects throughout the two years. The A-level Art & Design Exhibition will be on 15th June ATTENDANCE UPDATE Mr Hartley writes: Over the last twelve months many students have significantly improved their attendance and punctuality. The school’s Educational Welfare Officer, Mr Worth, has already issued 94 certificates to those whose attendance has been transformed, and is hoping that this will increase to a hundred by the end of the year. As the new timetable begins I urge all students to remember how important it is to maintain good attendance. Regular attendance at school means you will achieve better grades in your exams and enjoy greater success in your future career. And if you are ill and need to take time off, please make sure that you catch up on all the work you missed. Parents and carers can help by avoiding booking holidays during term time and arranging doctor and dentist appointments outside of school hours.

BOOK CLUB NEWS ‐ Ruth Warburton visit

Ms Green writes: Book Club members have just finished reading ‘A Witch in Winter’, the story of a teenage girl who discovers hidden magical powers when she moves from London to live in the countryside with her father. The author of the novel, Ruth Warburton visited Book Club in the LRC on Friday 25th May to meet her fans. It was great to meet her and hear part of her next book ‘A Witch in Love’ (a great privilege as it’s not even in the shops yet!). Book Club members had lots of interesting questions and thoughts on the book, which Ruth was delighted to discuss. Ruth said the girls were ‘a credit to the school’. Nazilcan Kucuk says: “Book Club is actually fun! The first time I heard about it, I thought ‘who would go to Book Club?!’ But when I joined in, I realised it’s so fun. We even get to meet the author of the book we’ve read! The book ‘A Witch in Winter’ was really exciting – I couldn’t put it down!”

What the author thought of her visit: “On Friday I had a brilliant school event at Highgate Wood School. I was invited in to talk to a reading group who’d done A Witch in Winter, so I knew in advance that everyone would have read the book which was great as I didn’t have to spend any time filling people in on the plot – they knew it all already! The girls had lots of brilliant questions about how I went about researching the book, and whether it was hard to get published. In between answering them we ate lemon meringue pies (YUM) and discussed our favourite scene – most people voted for the sleepover scene where Anna first casts the spell, but a few people went for my personal favourite – when Seth’s car has fallen off the cliff. Then I read a section from Book 2 which was a bit nerve‐ wracking because they were the very first “real” people to hear it. (It’s not in the shops yet). The best bit was they made some brilliant posters for the book, and gave me a card.”

BOOK CLUB NEWS ‐ Dan Freedman visit Football journalist and author, Dan Freedman visited Highgate Wood School on Thursday 24th May to speak students in years 7 and 8 about his books, his experiences as a journalist, his inspiration and writing process. Dan gave a really interesting presentation with some funny anecdotes about interviewing the likes of Messi and Beckham and inspiring words about becoming a novelist before answering lots of thoughtful questions from students. Dan Freedman is the author of the Jamie Johnson series. Dan says about his books: “The idea behind the books was a very simple one: I wanted to write the kind of books that I would have loved to have read when I was younger. That meant lots of drama, fast‐paced action and, of course lots of football.” 12

WINNERS OF SHAKESPEARE POETRY COMPETITION ANNOUNCED We celebrated National Shakespeare Day on 23rd April by running a Shakespeare‐ inspired poetry competition. The entries were all of an incredibly high standard and choosing a winner was extremely difficult. However, the overall winner of the Highgate Wood School Shakespeare Poetry Competition 2012 was Alice Bowen, who wrote an excellent sonnet about William Shakespeare. Nik Lerche and Tommy Escott were both runners‐up for their outstanding poems. Well done to all who submitted a poem for this competition. All poems have also been entered into a National Young Writers competition, where winners could see their work published in an anthology.

THE CARNEGIE AWARD 2012 Year 7, 8 and 9 students have set upon the challenge of reading and reviewing the eight shortlisted books for the Carnegie Award 2012 To see what our students have to say about the Carnegie shortlisted books, visit the link off the LRC pages of the school website (off the Learning Tab). A special well done to Faye Heron and Rosa Elson who have been our Star Reviewers so far! On Wednesday 30th May, Carnegie readers will be visiting reception pupils at Coleridge Primary School to run small group reading sessions using the books short listed for this year’s Kate Greenaway Award. All Carnegie readers will be invited to a Carnegie Awards Ceremony in the LRC at lunchtime on Thursday 14th June to announce and celebrate this year’s winning author. A Carnegie member in year 7 says: “Being a Carnegie reader is really great as I love reading! We get all the best new books picked out for us so we don’t have to go through the process of picking a book and then not liking it, which is really annoying and more importantly, boring! We get to do loads of stuff that no one else gets to do for instance, the time when we got to go down to Coleridge Primary School to read to the reception classes and making videos about the books we’ve read.”

VICTORY FOR LOUIE SMITH Louie attended the London Regional Athletics (disabilities) Games in April and won not just one medal, but five. He gained Silver medals for 60 metre, shot and relay and Golds for javelin and discuss. Well done Louie. A brilliant result and an inspiration to us all.

SIXTH FORMER THEO DANKO TO WORK WITH OLYMPIC SPORTSMAN Highgate Wood School 6th Former, Theo Danko has been selected from hundreds to take part in the innovative mentoring programme run by the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust and AQA. Twenty young people from across the UK will take part in the Unlocking Potential programme. Through a combination of community projects and personal development challenges, Unlocking Potential will help bring out the best in these young people. Theo will be working with Olympic Hockey player Darren Cheeseman. Dame Kelly Holmes, said: “Unlocking Potential is a personal development programme that will give Theo a fantastic opportunity to make a really positive impact on his local community. In a project delivered by world‐ class sports stars, Theo has earned the chance to learn from winners in sport, helping him to be the best he can be.” Nick Charlesworth, Head of Sixth Form comments: “Theo is a fantastically hard work student who really commits to everything he does. It is no surprise to those at Highgate Wood to see Theo selected for this program and in an Olympic year too.” Theo himself is thrilled about the opportunities this brings to him personally but is even more excited about how this will help others. “I am honoured to get this opportunity to make a greater difference for the Hillcrest Charity” he says. 14

SCIENCE CLUB EXPLORING BIODIVERSITY

Ms Taylor writes: Year 7 Science Club has been happening on Monday lunch‐ times from 1.10 ‐ 1.40 in P8—though as you can see we are not always confined to the classroom. .Starting next term any KS3 scientists keen to explore Biology, Chemistry or Physics should come along (we try to do as many explosions as possible!). All welcome! If you want any more information please ask me or your science teacher. June 2012

It is best to assume that there is always an examination in the Hall and Gym. Be considerate of your fellow students
