COOL CONFIDENCE Confidence is such a complex thing. It’s something which we all need to work on. Only when we push ourselves and do something unknown or out of our comfort zone, we gain confidence. And so this issue shows you great examples of how to do something amazing in your home, through our featured designer Rebecca Lindon, but also in your life. We talk to an artist and illustrator Emma Allsup and find out how she gained confidence to leave her teaching job and pursue her path of “meant to be”. Our December issue wouldn’t be complete without Christmas around the world feature, festive wardrobe essentials, sparkling beauty and great turkey leftover recipe. Happy reading!

The space throughout is decorated with various shades of grey used as backdrops for all those bright colours to come out and draw attention to. From turquoise and yellow in the main living area to vibrant red in the guest room, this home is a perfect example of how to inject personal taste into a space with balance and thought.

In the master bedroom the colours are brought in through wall art, the bespoke leather headboard and cushions. The rug adds additional textural element and shape that breaks up the geometric lines in the space. Additionally, it keeps the colour scheme grounded yet brings in interest and style.

The grey canvas continues into the bathroom in form of the dark porcelain floor tiles and the limestone mosaic around the bath area. The various shades and tones of the mosaic give the space necessary texture and pattern, while being highly practical and visually light and airy.

MAKE A STATEMENT : Paint ceiling a different colour, finish or if you’re feeling brave, stripe it out wide with tape or geometric pattern. Pick a dark colour to keep it sophisticated. Hang an oversized pendant for maximum impact. Create your own gallery and hang family pictures for art from floor to ceiling. FURNITURE: Invest in best quality furniture you can afford. I don’t always think you need to spend a fortune to get a high end luxury look but generally speaking - buy cheap equals buy twice!
PAINT & COLOUR: Undoubtadly the single most transformative thing you can do to change the vibe of a space. Paint out a window recess, door frame, skirting board or exaggerate architectural details to bring in a touch of bold colour. ART: Don’t underestimate the power of art. If interior design is about the aesthetic of a space, optimise the visual ambience with statement pieces. The time, talent, love and emotion invested by the artist, I believe, radiates a vibe and harmonises with your style and design preferences and takes it up a whole other notch. STYLE & CLASH: A mis-mash of items is so much more visually interesting that all the same vibe. It excites the eye, the mind and your friends to take in a collection of styles and scale. Don’t be afraid to mix it up! DO IT WITH LOVE: What could be more intimate than your home space so make sure you fill it with things you love, not because it was a bargain, or trendy or you think it might go with something at home. Make considered choices about things you love, go with your instinct and if you’re not sure, do a little mood board to see how everything gels together. In homes, we can experiment more with both of them and create our own mix that is as much as unique as it is rewarding and joyous. We talked to a colour and pattern designer and expert, Sarah Parris from Parris Wakefield Additions, who shares with us her approach to colour and pattern.

1. How did you get into working and creating patterns on textiles? It all started as part of our graphic design work. Occasionally projects would need an image but sometimes there wasn’t the time or budget to have a photoshoot or commission an illustrator so we would create something digitally. These were often used in advertising or album sleeves, and we were asked to do more and more. This body of work had a very distinctive style for which the studio was being recognised for, but it was only in 2012 that we first applied our designs to textile products and explored making repeating patterns.
2.Who is your biggest influence and inspiration for your design work? We constantly find inspiration in everything from places we visit, exhibitions we see to the nature found in our own garden. But probably art has the biggest influence, are the works of Gerhard Richter, Matisse, Kandinsky, Yayoi Kusama - they are all masters of colour.
3. How important do you think is the importance of balance when it comes to working with pattern? Choosing a balanced colour palette when creating a pattern is vital to the pattern’s success. You can go quite crazy with the pattern so long as the colours are balanced. A beautiful pattern in garish or overly bland colours just won’t work, re-colour that same pattern and it will come to life.
4. How do you think colour can empower in terms of feel good factor? Colour can have a huge impact on how someone feels. We can all relate to how different you feel if you change your hair colour for example, or swap your brown shoes for a red pair. The colours in a room will have the same effect, to drain the colour out of room is to drain the life and personality out if it. That is not the sort of place you would look forward to going home to, it would not make you feel good.

5. What advice would you give to someone who loves pattern and colours but is afraid to use them in their home? Any tips on how to experiment with pattern? I would advise them to embrace colour, be a shade braver. The easiest way to begin is with accessories, cushions, lampshades, art etc. Mix up colours and pattern just remembering a simple rule. Match a colour or the pattern with something else in the room, for example you can have two stripy cushions, but they don’t need to be the same colours - add in another cushion with, say a floral pattern, as long as a colour in it matches with a colour in the stripy cushion it will work. The more you add this way the better it will look. So let go and have fun - Your home is an opportunity to creatively express you; your individuality and your tastes.
“When using bold patterned cushions, match the core colours and play with different pattterns. Not all cushions have to be stripy or floral. Mix them up to create a better balance.” 21

As the end of the year is approaching, the party season is upon us. We put on a nice dress that we absolutely love and with that our skin might be revealed more than usual. I have been trying out two skincare products designed to firm and hydrate skin from Medical Beauty Research. This German skin care brand uses only the best ingredients in the highest possible concentrations without sacrificing skin tolerance. The ingredients used in all MBR products are mainly natural based with its aim to deliver “best possible� results. Most products include shea butter, avocado oil, shambrilla oil, Abyssinian oil and jojoba oil. I use the Cell - Power Firming Body Lotion which I apply after shower each morning. Its anti-aging properties suppose to moisturise, firm up and calm dry skin. I have noticed that after application my skin feels soft...like velvet!
In evenings, before I go to bed, I use the Cell - Power Contouring Cream which is richer and more dense. It’s supposed to regenerate and repair skin cells while firming the skin as well. TIP: Use the Cell - Power Contouring Cream for body massage. I must warn you though the products are quite pricey but I have noticed a significant change in how my skin feels and looks. Talacre Lighthouse in Flintshire is so magical.

creamy pea soup with turkey Don’t know what to do with all that turkey leftover from Christmas Day? How about wintery comforting creamy soup? It’s easy and quick to make and it tastes delicious. Perfect for the whole family to enjoy. Use Batchelors Marrowfat peas if you are really pressed for time, or alternatively you can use fresh or frozen peas.
ingredients 20g butter 1 small onion - peeled and finely chopped 2 cloves garlic - peeled and chopped 300ml turkey of chicken stock 2 tins Batchelors Marrowfat ‘Bigga’ peas - drained and rinsed 100ml double cream Pepper and salt to taste To garnish 50g bacon lardons - or two rashers cooked until crispy 75g cooked turkey - chopped Fresh herbs - chives or parsley - finely chopped
method Place the butter into a saucepan and allow to melt over a gentle heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry until translucent and starting to turn golden. Add the stock and the peas, reserving a few for garnish, and gently simmer for 5 minutes. Blend the soup in a jug blender or whizz with a stick blender until silky smooth. Season to taste. Return to the pan, add the cream and gently reheat to a simmer. Serve immediately, stirring in the turkey, and garnishing with the bacon, herbs, reserved peas and a little extra cream. Enjoy!

festive canapé tips Panicking about your Christmas Party? Think you’ve got too much on your own plate already? “The festive season is a time for family to get together, celebrate and relax so the food should follow suit.” says Ben Purton, the executive head chef of Lancaster London Hotel on Hyde Park. It’s fair to say that Ben knows a thing or two about catering for large parties of people. He will be coordinating the serving of over 10,000 canapés at Lancaster London this Christmas!

Don’t over complicate the process and choose a few easy winners that you can bring out as and when needed.

I love...love...love pigs in blankets and eat them in excess at this time of year. They make the perfect canapé simply roasted off and drizzled in a mix of honey and grain mustard and served on a skewer.

Simple smoked salmon served on crisped up rye bread (you can use other breads too) and finished with a dollop of soured cream and a sprinkle of chives always goes down well. If you’re feeling like a bit of luxury - add a little caviar!!

Turkey leftovers are a great thing. Try frying off some finely shredded onions and a little curry powder and adding the turkey (small diced) and a few sultanas and combining well. Leave to chill and mix in a bit of mayo and serve on a crisp baby gem leaf garnished with coriander.

For a sweet fix - make a great flapjack (or buy some) and when baked and cooled top with dried cranberries and roasted pumpkin seeds that have been bound together with a little reduced orange juice – yum! LANCASTERLONDON.COM

“open up & inspire” We talked to Emma Allsup from EmmaJayne Designs, a graphic artist specialising in bold and colourful art and stationery, about leaving her teaching job to pursuit her dream of working for herself. 1. How did you decide to become an artist and work for yourself? For a long time, I have always wanted to work for myself. Approximately ten years ago, I wanted to produce bespoke wallpapers. I’d previously worked as a creative designer for a bedding company and knew a great deal about the home textile market. So, I set up a website and found a printer that would print my designs, but I didn’t have the business knowledge. At the time, it was difficult trying to concentrate and set up a business, whilst doing my daytime job as a teacher and being a single mum.
2. What fears did you have to overcome when you decided to work for yourself? After leaving my teaching job, my partner and I did set up a design agency. Through this, I learned a great deal about marketing, social media, networking, working with clients, design trends and producing commercial designs. However, deep down I still really wanted to work for myself. To start a business, it can be pretty daunting. What helped me start my own business was when I’d started blogging a few years ago. Through blogging I was getting to feature some amazing artists who have their own shops. You could say that I was inspired and through blogging, it gave me the confidence to set up my own shop, selling my own designs. When you blog, you connect with people who you wouldn’t normally meet and you gain knowledge from what they do.
3. You have set up an Etsy shop this year. How did you find the process and running of your shop? I love my Etsy shop and I’m excited to showcase my work, plus I have many more items which I’ll be adding in the not so distant future. The whole process of setting up a shop on Etsy isn’t very complicated. You need to make sue that your profile says something about you and what you do. I’d keep it professional, yet light hearted. It’s nice to read a profile that is welcoming and personally, I prefer to read people’s profiles who have a great sense of fun and passion for what they do. Then you need to add your product images. There are instructions telling you about what resolution to use and you can add up to five different product images. After this, you then fill in the remaining details that you want your customers to know about the item you are selling. It is pretty straightforward. Once you are set up, you can carry on producing more designs. That’s all there is to setting up a shop on Etsy and then it’s a good idea to share your items on social media. Let people know what great items you have for sale!
4. What would you say to anyone who is creative and wants to go freelance? I would recommend for someone who is creative to go self-employed. It is hard work and there is lots to do. Besides producing designs, you also need to think about how you’ll need to get your work seen. I spend a large percentage of my days sharing my designs on social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, as well as researching and producing new designs. At the end of the day, you want to keep producing fabulous designs because creative people just love creating. By sharing you get people to view your work so you can sell it and earn a living from doing what you love. People love seeing what you produce and if you keep active on social media, you’re inspiring people by what you’ve created.
