COLOURFUL COMFORT 1

Welcome

to the October issue of HIGH IN STYLE!

COLOURFUL COMFORTS As the days are getting shorter I seek comfort in colours. To me Autumn equals rich earthy orange. So in this issue we are embracing bolder colours in life. But we don’t go overboard with them. We showcase interiors that are well balanced and thought out. In fashion we explore the re-invented classics. The effortlessly chic look with edge. And while the weather is gradually deteriorating we take you to Barcelona for a perfect weekend getaway. In our “open up & inspire” interview we are discussing finding courage and standing strong with interiors and lifestyle blogger, Nova Williams. Enjoy!

colourful comfort words by Bhavin Taylor

The brief for this New York penthouse, designed by Bhavin Taylor was to turn a white new build box into a space that was full of the client’s personality whilst being comfortable and inviting. “The design started with a custom one of a kind rug. This I created by selecting different patterned squares in various shades of blue and joinging them together in a random pattern.”

9

The pattern on the blue and white wallpaper goes hand in hand with the patterned rug which started the colour scheme in this living room.

“Keeping the main pieces of furniture neutral allows for further accent colours to be introduced into the room. The natural choice was to go for orange as it sits opposite blue on the colour wheel. However, getting the right shade is crucial to make sure the balance is right.”

“When it comes to designing a room with pattern getting the balance is key.” 10

11

The high gloss white kitchen creates a great base for all the colours and patterns in the room. “Since it is an open plan living space, I tied the kitchen to the rest of the room by adding a tile splash back that repeats the various shades of blue in the rug and repeated the orange paint under the breakfast bar as a pop of extra colour. If you are afraid of using bold colours discreet spaces such as this breakfast bar can be a good start. You can’t see it from all views but can add an element of surprise when you turn the corner and see it.”

12

13

“Mixing patterns well in same tones of orange and pink is crutial for this space to work.

14

“The polka dot wallpaper adds subtle but high impact. The guest bedroom which doubles also the home office is decorated to reflect its multi purpose use. Located on the same floor as the main living area, Bhavin continued with the orange accent but paired it with pink. The room therefore takes on its own identity yet is still linked to its adjacent space.

15

16

“Without using yellow this master bedroom would end up being quite flat.” Even though the master bedroom is papered in a bold geometric black and white wallpaper, the room still seems light thanks to its large floor to ceiling windows. “The light acts as a balance to the dark wallpaper choice and the pops of yellow add the much needed colour, giving the room a lift but without being too overpowering.”

17

tropical vintage kitchen words by Karolina Barnes

Interior designer Rebecca Davies from Carnival Interiors transformed her open plan living space beyond recognision. “The light, bright space spoke to me of a tropical, shack style room with mismatched furniture and birds tweeting in the background. That was my starting point. Mixing vintage with DIY and budget friendly design ideas, the space is full of character and confidence.

21

22

“I believe our home should be our refuge as well as a reflection of our personality.

23

These French iron chairs got a makeover with new vintage floral fabric which goes well with the curtains and the floor lamp close by.

“I don’t tend to follow trends that much. Rather I go by instinct and what feels right to me. I love to decorate with one-off pieces. They add character and interest.” Even though the colour palette is quite restricted the space still seems colourful. The secret to this is to mix various patterns and textures while staying within 4 core colours. In this case it’s mint, khaki, soft pink and yellow as picked up on the Kenzo fabric of the bespoke curtains.

stylish reading nook Meera from Arty Home gives us tips on how to decorate a small reading nook which even boys love spending time in! words by Meera Pendred & Karolina Barnes

1. 2. 3.

Choose bold colours that will clearly define the area.

Add vibrant, bright cushions in different patterns.

Use thick clear acrylic display racks to keep books organised and show off their colourful covers.

29

30

4. 5.

To make the painted stripe effect, use frog tape. Mask off areas as required then paint along the edges of the masking tape with the base colour first (in this case white). Any bleed-through will be the same colour as the main wall colour and once dry, this will seal the edges of the tape. Then paint with the second colour. When the tape is pulled off, you’ll have super sharp lines! Put a personal touch in form of a DIY art or poster.

1. TELL US WHAT THE CONCEPT OF YOUR STORE IS?

2. WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCT / TREND YOU SEE?

The concept of the store was born in a gorgeous apartment in London back in 2013, where my Swedish friend Sara and I managed to create a cosy and welcoming interior with a unique and welcoming vibe. We called it ‘Heaven at no.67’ our friends loved it, we adored it, and we found ourselves wanting to ‘stay home’ or have ‘a cosy night in’ more often than ever before.

Copper has been trending for the past few years and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon. It’s got unique qualities - it gives off both warm and industrial vibe. It looks brilliant against dark grey backgrounds/walls which are also more and more popular.

We somehow managed to capture the spirit of Scandinavian home and lifestyle and since then I’ve firmly believed it can be recreated pretty much anywhere, if you use the right accessories, textures or colour tones.

One of the hottest trends right now are rugs, and so geometric patterns, modern botanical and architectural prints.

3. HOW DO YOU DEFINE STYLE? When it comes to product range, one of the rules I follow strictly and invariably is - I don’t stock anything I wouldn’t gladly own myself. If I wanted to take a stab at defining style, I’d have to describe it as the ability to balance the need to express your personality, current trends, basic interior design rules as well as the knowledge how to skilfully break them. If you get all these elements right, you’ll be an inspiration to others.

fashion trend alert

the classic update words and images by Flavia Young

As the busiest month on the fashion calendar and the exhaustive rounds of fashion weeks wrap up, the observation one can no longer ignore is how STREET STYLE has overtaken traditional fashion magazines as the single most sought after source of inspiration to the fashion lover. Outlandish outfits apart, the two main noticeable trends this season are the return to classics, but as it is always the case with fashion, they have been re-invented… Monochrome gets edgy with ruffles and pussy bows on tops and the return of the higher waist, tapered, cropped trousers. Super flattering on all body shapes, I am betting heavily on this look. Knitwear jumps out of its comfortable zone and is no longer restricted to sweaters. Luxurious wools and cashmeres were seen in all forms, oversized sweaters, scarves, coats, ponchos and more interestingly, on skirts. The weight of the fabric and of course its warmth combine to make this truly the most flattering skirt fit of all times. As always, my advice is:

“Take from trends only what suits your body shape and inject confidence into your stride, the rest, simply leave to the utopian runways.”

way to glow Our top picks and top tips for your most natural contouring and highlighting. words and photography by Kimberly Duran

44

“You don’t have to be the Kardashian’s makeup artist or fill your face with what can only be described as ‘morse code’ to create a natural, glowing look. With a few simple products and techniques, you can sculpt your features and bring your best face forward.”

CONTOURING Kat Von D Shade & Light Palette

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick

Get your hands on this wonder product from the US and you’ll never look at another contour powder again. With 3 shades suiting nearly any skin tone, these grey-undertone powders mimic the natural shadows on the face creating an incredibly realistic result. Sephora ships internationally or you can try Amazon.

If you prefer a cream based contour, consider these easy to use foundation sticks 2 shades darker than your natural colour and blend with your foundation for a flawless, natural look.

HIGHLIGHTING HIGHLIGHTING The Balm Mary Lou Manizer Highlighter A warm rose gold with a highly pigmented shimmered finish, create a glow that seems to come from within with this highlighter. A little goes a long way so use sparingly.

Gerard Cosmetics Audrey Star Powder For a golden shimmer, this works best with a bit of tan (or fake it by starting with a little bronzer). Highly pigmented, use on top of cheekbones, along bridge of nose and above your cupid’s bow for super simple sculpting.

FINISHING TOUCH Laura Mercier Setting Powder Finish off the look with a setting powder. This highly milled powder doesn’t sink into wrinkles and ensures your look lasts all day.

45

how to contour & highlight After foundation, suck in your cheeks to find the hollows of your cheekbones. Notice the natural crease from your hairline to just below the apples of your cheeks.

cream contour If you are using a cream contour, draw a thin line of cream foundation 2 shades darker than your natural colour in this area. Dot the darker foundation along your hairline and around the top of your forehead. Draw a thin line just under and along your jawline. Blend well using a Beauty Blender to ensure there are no harsh lines remaining - you want it to look as natural as possible. On the cheekbones, blend upwards (never down toward the jawline). The colour should be darkest right near your ear and get lighter as it’s blended out like a natural shadow. Blend towards the forehead at the hairline and down neck at the jawline. If you want to slim your nose, create two very thin lines on either side of the bridge to the tip and using the tip of the Beauty Blender, blend well into the sides of your nose. Set face with a light dusting of finishing powder.

46

how to contour & highlight powder contour If you are using a powder contour, use a pointed contour brush to place the product into the contours of your cheeks and around hairline. Start lightly – you can always add more for a more sculpted look but going too heavy will give a muddy appearance. Using either a slim angled brush or a fluffy brush with a pointed tip, blend the powder up to cheeks to create a natural looking shadow. Place product at hairline with a contour brush and blend into forehead with a fluffy brush. To slim nose, use a small eyeshadow brush to create two soft lines at either side of your bridge and blend well into the sides of your nose. Set face with a light dusting of finishing powder.

highlight To highlight, using a small thin brush, apply the highlighter to the bridge of your nose and finish at the tip. If you would like your nose to appear shorter, simply use highlighter on the very tip (not the bridge). For fuller lips, use the same brush to highlight just above the cupid's blow. Using a fan brush, highlight the tops of your cheekbone, chin and above the arch of your eyebrows. To make eyes appear brighter, use a small detail brush to gently pat highlighter over and under inner tear ducts, avoiding the inside of your eye. Over highlighted? Simply use a clean fluffy brush to diffuse any over application. You can finish the look and warm up your face with your favourite bronzer along the same areas of the contour and powder blush, applied to the apples of your cheek and blending towards the contour. 47

tried & tested

macadamia words by Karla Cihak

I’m all about change. My hair in particular take a big hit. When I’m a brunette I want to be blonde. When I have short hair I want them long. After many years of experimentation and putting my hair under serious stresses and tests, the result is pretty grim. Total damage beyond repair. Over the years I’ve tried many products, from high end to supermarket purchases. I tried anything and everything that claimed to improve my damaged hair. Recently I was recommended to try Macadamia Professional. Initially I thought: “Here we go again overpromising-good-to-be-true-product.” I gave it a try anyway and the outcome was amazing. My hair feels stronger, richer, softer and shinier. The secret ingredient of Macadamia products is Macadamia Oil which contains high amount of Omega 7. Omega 7 apparently mimics scalp’s natural oil production that provides moisturisation and nourishment to your hair. Additional Omega 9, antioxidants and Vitamin E helps to improve hair strength, renew damage and restore shine. I’ve been using three Macadamia products: the Rejuvenating Shampoo, Deep Repair Masque and Macadamia Oil. I use the Deep Repair Masque instead of conditioner. Once a week I prepare my own hair treatment by mixing the same amount of the masque with the Macadamia oil. I apply it on to my hair and leave it in for 30 min. After washing it all off my hair feels incredibly rich, soft and nourished. Since I’ve been using the range, I have noticed a major improvement in my hair quality which I get complimented on. I love it!

Ready in 45 min

pumpkin pasta recipe and words by Lindsay Clark, photography by Karolina Barnes

Great British As wellDinner as Autumn being a perfect excuse to be lazy and catch up on films Family

and TV I may have missed through the Summer months, I love it even more for another reason…. yep you guessed it, the food! In the months to come it’s all about the roasted veg, the hearty soups, the spicy casseroles, the crispy pies, the steamed puddings. Proper comfort food!

ingredients Olive oil, 30g unsalted butter, 350g pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled and cut into small chunks, 3 shallots, diced, 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, 1 dried chilli, finely chopped, 2 teaspoons of paprika, 200ml white wine, 200ml double cream 2 sprigs of rosemary, chopped, 500g fresh pasta of your choice, 75g of grated parmesan

method Firstly, preheat oven to gas mark 4/180C or 160C for fan assisted ovens. Throw the pumpkin or squash into a large baking tray and drizzle a generous amount of olive oil on top. Season with salt and toss together making sure everything is well coated. Add in the rosemary and roast in the oven for around 25 to 30 minutes or until soft and golden in colour. Meanwhile, gently fry the diced shallots and garlic in butter in a large saucepan. Cook until soft and then add in the chopped chilli for a further minute. Add in the paprika, mix well and allow to cook for another minute or two. At this point it would be a good idea to begin heating a large pan of salted water ready for the fresh pasta. Next, pour in the white wine and bring to a boil allowing the liquid to reduce by about a third. Turn the heat down and pour in the double cream and allow to simmer. Once the water has reached a rolling boil, add the pasta and cook according to packet instructions – dried pasta will take at least double the time. Pour a little of the cooking water into the creamy sauce to loosen it if needed. Just before the pasta is ready, spoon the pumpkin or squash into the sauce with a slotted spoon along with the rosemary and mix well. Drain the pasta and toss through the sauce. Add in the parmesan and season well with salt and fresh black pepper. Serve in a bowl with a chunk of fresh bread on the side for that perfect autumnal meal. 61

“open up & inspire” STILL STANDING Navigating life after baby loss

Pregnancy loss or infant loss touches families from all walks of life, and happens far more often that we’d like to believe. According to SANDS, Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity, “Until recently 17 babies died every day in the UK, the tragic victims of stillbirth or neonatal death. This statistic remained unchanged for many years”. In efforts to raise awareness of this devastating loss, SANDS launched their Why17 Campaign in 2008. Although the number of babies dying in the UK per day has fallen to less than 16 in a day, according to SANDS, there were still over 100 babies dying every week in the UK in 2013. October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day (PAILRD). In observation of PAILRD everyone is invited to participate in the International Wave of Light by lighting a candle at 7pm on October 15th in their respective time zone, and keep it burning for at least one hour. This will result in a continuous chain of light around world for at least 24 hours in honour and remembrance of the babies who died before, during, or shortly after birth. In this month’s edition of Open Up & Inspire, we decided to catch up with Nova Williams, of London based interior design and lifestyle blog 18 Chelsea Mews. Having suffered a late miscarriage in July 2012, Nova shares snippets of her experience with pregnancy loss, and a few words of advice for other women facing a similar tragedy.

18CHELSEAMEWS.COM 62

1. I understand that losing your baby had a great impact on your life. How did you manage to turn your life around? Turning negative into positive. Yes, sadly, my precious baby girl Robyn Reese was still-born just 2 days shy of my 24th week of pregnancy. Referring to this unfortunate event as the single most devastating and life-changing experience for me, is putting it mildly. In all honestly, I can’t really say that I have a formula, or that I really know how I managed to turn my life around after such an immensely painful loss. I think the most beneficial thing I did for me was... I finally gave myself permission and time to grieve. But that permission slowly emerged after the many painful months I had spent searching my soul, trying to make sense of the tragedy that my life had suddenly become. As Robyn made her transition into another realm, I too experienced a transition of my own. I am forever changed by this poignant experience and I’ve accepted that I will never be the same person I was before Robyn died...or even before she came into my life. However, I firmly believe that there are some intrinsic qualities at the core of our true selves that always shine through no matter what happens in our lives, and I often think that’s really what saved me. I’m quite a sprightly person by nature and I always imagined my little girl to be a bit of a mini-me, so it didn’t really come as a surprise when I suddenly found myself thinking that I didn’t want Robyn, nor my memory of her, to be synonymous with sadness, doom and gloom. Although I didn’t have a very long time with her, our relationship was very real; we shared some happy and tender moments, which have become memories I want to preserve. Life without my precious baby girl is still immensely painful, but I do my best to preserve her memory in ways that bring me even the tiniest moments of joy. I mark her precious milestones in the most beautiful and meaningful ways I can, and I keep a record of it all so that she too has a legacy.

2. Many women are probably going through the same situation you were in. What would you advise them to do? Unfortunately there is no magic cure I can recommend, but from my own experience, here’s the best advice I can give (in no particular order):

“Be kind to yourself. Surround yourself with the love and care of friends and family. Don’t be afraid to seek professional help.” 3. Do you think that giving it time and finding a hobby/starting a blog/taking courses and new interests helps with healing? Time is definitely a great healer, but I don’t think it’s just the passing of time that does the healing. The actions and thoughts you invest in during that time makes all the difference in the world. Like I said before, there is no formula nor magic cure so this of course will vary from person to person. For example, in my case, even after a year following Robyn’s departure, I found myself completely incapable of snapping out of the ‘nesting phase’ I seem to have slipped into while I was pregnant and preparing for her arrival. I continued to surf the internet in search of lovely ideas and items to buy for a nursery I no longer needed. Thankfully, a recent house move saved me from myself and I was finally able to outwardly embrace that nesting phase as I made the new apartment into into a real home. I started making little notes from the ideas I had for my new home and without much planning, my blog 18 Chelsea Mews came into being. For me, my blog was a perfectly pretty little world I had created for my own escape, one that I was fully in control of, unlike my real world where ugly things ‘just happened’.

63

Having some control over this one thing in my life led me to a place of ‘normalcy’ over time, then I slowly started to feel a bit like myself again. Understanding your true self and following your heart is a great place to start your healing. I’m also an artist, but my paintings and assemblages, unlike my interior decorating projects, have always been a bit dark, moody and mysterious. Although painting is an activity I find quite cathartic and it seems to be the one thing I do best when everything seems to be falling apart around me, I know it’s still not what I need to use as an outlet at this stage of my grief, as I’d be more likely to linger in the darkness forever, producing amazing paintings, while remaining deeply unhappy. The point I’m making here is that it is most important to be honest with yourself about where you are during every stage of your grief and healing process, and never be afraid to seek professional help.

4. I notice that you love colours. Do you think that they play a role on how we feel and help us to deal with negative experiences? As an artist, colour informs everything in my life and plays a huge role in my day to day experiences. My love for vibrant colours and the effect they have on me is possibly another one of those things connected to my inner core. Being surrounded by a ‘carnival’ of energetic colours gives me life. Even in those early months after Robyn’s departure when I couldn’t even muster a smile, just having a glance at beautiful colours gave me hope. Colour psychology is REAL!
