HIGH IN STYLE the sophisticated way of living JULY 2016
CAPTURING BEAUTY
1
Welcome
to the July issue of HIGH IN STYLE!
CAPTURING BEAUTY Initially, the inspiration for this issue was supposed to be all about summer's whites, sandy beaches, clear blue sea and exotic locations. But, as I was going through each section, a picture of a different story was unfolding in front of my eyes. I realised that the common link running throughout this issue is the appreciation of beauty. And so as we enter the summer holiday season, really try to stop and capture anything that speaks to you naturally. Take time to appreciate your surroundings and consider yourself lucky that you are able to experience them. Not only you will discover something new, you will also learn more about yourself. Until next time.. Love,

Modern Nordic text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Elisabeth Mjaseth
Injecting personality into a colour restricted interior doesn't have to be hard. Elisabeth Mjaseth, a Norwegian interiors blogger and mum, created a beautiful home for her family by using vintage objects, art and cosy textiles as a way of expressing her individual style. A 1947 building has been renovated and doubled in size to accommodate modern family living that has strong references to a Nordic style.
9
10
Initially, this all white open plan living space was lacking colour. Elisabeth decided to paint the feature wall in light pink and created not only a focal point but also added another dimension to the space.
“I was missing some colour in the living room. I just love how the light pink wall turned out.
11
12
Keeping the space cohesive throughout, including the outdoor terrace area, is key when it comes to working with a limited colour palette. Elisabeth mixed various patterns and textures to achieve a calming and welcoming home that is functional and highly individual.

Holistic Living text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Sarah Jones
Your home is the mirror to your life. Holistic living is based on the belief that true happiness, success, health, balance and peace come through an alignment of the mind, body and soul. However many hours you spend at work or with friends, home should be a place where you can escape to. I spoke to Sarah Jones, the UK's leading holistic and intuitive skin and wellness expert, about her views on confidence, failure, personal style and how to create a well balanced home.

1. WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A HOLISTIC EXPERT? I knew from a very young age I had a special gift, I was always able to feel messages whether I was at school or in a park or at a restaurant. Over the years I have fine-tuned this and my passion when I left school was to become a beauty therapist. When I trained and touched people my gift was heightened and information given on an emotional level – a person's soul. After many years I understand life isn’t about a crystal ball and being told when you’re going to meet your prince charming, it’s about you as a soul and how you create your future and path. Wellness is the condition of being in optimum health. It is a holistic blend of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being: the result of consciously choosing to live a quality life. The path of natural health and wellness is a life-long journey that requires personal responsibility and commitment. Holistic emphasizes the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts. It is the recognition that what affects one part or system affects the whole body. A holistic approach to health is multi-faceted and mindful of the consequences of our habits and actions. I have always taken responsibility for my thoughts and actions and always looked at the whole picture, inside and out, and this has been key to my journey of holistic living.
“Live every day as a fresh new start and be true to who you are.”
2. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST MESSAGE AND MOTTO YOU LIVE BY? ''Just Be". Be in the present in every moment of your life. The rest will come when it's ready. Take a deep breath and listen, look around you, pay attention to the world. Slow down your pace. Take small snippets of time to be grateful. Life is too short to not concentrate on the positives. Take time every day to listen from within yourself. This may mean meditation. It may be prayer. It might be yoga. It could be sitting on the front porch with a coffee watching the hummingbirds. It’s a silencing of the mind. Be mindful. Be conscious of your thoughts. Living the life of who you truly are. Being authentic. Follow your dreams only; you can make it happen. 16
3. HOW CAN WE EMPOWER OURSELVES TO LIVING LIFE TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL AND REACHING OUR CAPABILITIES? Personal empowerment is about looking at who you are and becoming more aware of yourself as a unique individual. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Once we know ourselves from within our capabilities are limitless. The essence of empowering oneself means attaining mastery over ones thoughts and actions and this cannot be achieved without BOTH the body and mind included. By altering our thoughts we can influence our perspective of the world and shape our reality and the approach is putting what we have achieved and learnt into practice.
4. WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE WHEN IT COMES TO DEALING WITH LACK OF CONFIDENCE AND THE LIMITATIONS THAT WE PUT ON OURSELVES WHICH PREVENT US FROM LEARNING ABOUT WHO WE TRULY ARE? I always tell my daughter don't let anyone dull your sparkle. I truly believe it doesn't matter what anyone thinks or their opinion - it's what you believe in your heart. Be yourself and when you feel comfortable from within your inner confidence shines bright. I think the most interesting and beautiful people who are the ones who be themselves even if it's not following the trend.
17
5. WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON FAILURE? Failure is a really negative word and makes you feel dreadful. We see it as an ending, as proof that your plan didn’t succeed or your ideas weren’t good enough. The truth is, failure happens to everyone. The only thing that separates people who succeed from those who don’t is an understanding of the power of failure. Success requires that you learn from mistakes along the way rather than falling into despair and giving up. The law of attraction essentially is the law of mirroring. It is a learning construct in this time space reality that enables us to clearly see ourselves in that whatever is inside us is reflected externally. In seeing things clearly like this, we can then change our thoughts and words and actions so the external reflects what we would prefer. It is the perfect platform for expansion, evolution and progression, all of which facilitates awareness and awakening. But so much of the stuff that reflects in our external reality are things within us we have no conscious awareness of, until it shows up externally.
6. I BELIEVE THAT STYLE IS A WAY OF LIVING. IT’S WHAT DEFINES US AS INDIVIDUALS. HOW IMPORTANT IS PERSONAL STYLE TO YOU? AND IF SOMEONE IS STRUGGLING FINDING THEIR STYLE, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM TO DO? Finding your personal fashion style is about getting to know yourself. It's about being connected with the very essence of who YOU are - and be confident about it! Fashion is about looks and image that are popular in a specific time and period. Style on the other hand, is more about expressing your individuality through clothes, and it doesn't have an expiration date. It's more REAL. Fashion gives you the inspiration, ideas and the nudge to dare - and style is what you make out of it. Developing your personal fashion style is a great way to finding your style and expressing your individuality instead of just blending in.When trying to find your personal fashion style, think of the ideal you and create a look book collage. Be creative. Combine your taste, lifestyle, interests, desires, inspirations and aspirations. Ask yourself: 1. What clothes will you wear? 2. What will you act like? 3. What will people say and comment about you?
“The best way to find out your style is to understand your inner world” 18
Top tips for holistic home
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
DECLUTTER: The first step to a healthy happy home is the most obvious one – ‘De clutter’. Clutter causes headaches and relates to bogging down the mind with unhealthy emotions. A messy space influences stress, anxiety and drains you. Once you have had a full clean of your home, set aside 5 – 10 minutes each day for putting things away, making your bed, and keeping your bathroom clean, it makes a big difference! HOUSE PLANTS: Plants in your home freshen and enrich the oxygen content of the air that you breathe adding naturally inspired textures and patterns to your décor. Plants are very balancing and harmonious bringing clarity and productivity. ELECTRONICS: Keep technology to an all-time low. Electromagnetic fields linger in your home causing negative energy. Keep TV watching to a minimum and make sure you choose to watch programmes which are uplifting and / or enlightening. Also try to avoid TV in bed as this causes excessive dreams and prevents your mind from relaxing making it difficult for you to sleep soundly. COOK: Make time for dinner. Put away newspapers, turn off the TV and homework. Work together to help prepare the meal. Each of you can help with washing the vegetables, cooking or laying the table. Dinner is a time for conversation away from all technology and time to be present with each other connecting. ACCESSORIES: Accessories around your home to create calm would be a Buddha, which instantly creates tranquillity. Aromatherapy will purify, relax and energise and create a very sensual ambiance. Art is also extremely important - choose art that speaks to you and brings you joy each time you look at it. CANDLES: Definitely do not forget candles which are a must as they involve the energy of in your home, are harmonious and healthy and help release daily stress. SMILE: Laugh each day – laughter is the best medicine. Being able to smile and laugh in your own home reenergises your spirit. One place you can clear your mind away from the outside world is at home.

breakfast in bed special feature 20
Swoon Editions words and photography by Karolina Barnes
Don’t we all want at least one day in a week to have a good lie-in or breakfast in bed? To some this simple wish might be a luxury. Sometimes life just takes over and you really crave for sleeping in. But here’s another little luxury for you. Say hello to “The Smith”, the mattress that is. Now you can experience a boutique hotel night’s sleep in your own home. Every day and every night.
21
Handcrafted in Hampshire with Egyptian cotton, Hampshire wool, silk and cashmere and a double layer of pocket springs, the mattress is super luxurious! The story behind the design and collaboration is fascinating too. Always looking for new beautifully made furniture products and particularly high quality mattress Debbie, who founded the furniture retail business Swoon Editions, asked one of the owners of a leading boutique hotel booking site, Mr & Mrs Smith, what was his best ever night’s sleep. By complete coincident it was the very mattress that Debbie’s maker had made for her. And so they created the perfect mattress. A little everyday luxury even when you can’t afford a lie-in.
“I wanted our customers to have the feeling of waking up in their very own boutique hotel. I personally tested over 100 mattresses but none came close to the one I had been sleeping on for the past ten years.” 22
23
“We are at our very best, and we are happiest, when we are fully engaged in work we enjoy on the journey toward the goal we’ve established for ourselves. It gives meaning to our time off and comfort to our sleep.” - Earl Nightingale

Three facts about sleep
1.
WE SPEND ON AVERAGE A THIRD OF OUR LIVES IN BED Did you know that? Investing in good quality bed should be one of your priorities. Look at it as a long term investment. Some high quality bed makers have up to 25 years guarantee. So you do the maths.
2.
THE QUALITY OF YOUR BED DICTATES THE QUALITY OF YOUR SLEEP When we sleep our bodies need to restore and get ready for what’s ahead. If your sleep is disrupted or your muscles can’t relax, you need a bed with a correct support. Providing such support will improve the quality of your daily life.
3.
SLEEP MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL The way you feel and look depends on what’s going on when you are sleeping. Sleep helps your brain to work properly and so it affects concentration, how you interact with others, how you control emotions and learning. Lack of sleep has a major effect on your mood and your hormone levels. Plus your immune system relies heavily on a good night sleep too.

“The exciting reality of decorating is that your home is unique." Photography by Shirlie Kemp 26
Capturing Beauty text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Jessica Zoob
One design element that interior designers love using in their projects is art. It is the ultimate tool to express your personality with. It is the missing piece of the puzzle that pulls the whole interior together. But above all, art should be story-telling, inspiring, uplifting and joyful. I interviewed one of my favourite British contemporary painters Jessica Zoob about her inspiration, style and colours behind her stunning work.
JOYFULNESS 27
1. WHEN DID YOU REALISE YOU HAVE PASSION FOR ART? I have always had a passion for art and after studying at Central School of Art and Nottingham University I worked as a theatre designer for seven years at venues including the Bristol Old Vic, the Royal National Theatre and Greenwich Theatre. It had a huge influence on my work as a contemporary artist. I think I was very lucky to bypass the more confrontational training which fine art students appear to encounter and was simply trained to use my eyes with hours of life drawing. I loved the challenges involved with creating sets and costumes and found it hugely rewarding. However, now to be painting is completely liberating by contrast! The only person I need to please being myself, rather than a whole team as in the past and I have been painting for the last 16 years and will always completely love it!
“I want people to feel rested when they look at my work - to wander through the paintings seeing something different each time they look at them.” 2. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE IN LIFE AND YOUR WORK? I would describe my artistic style as contemporary impressionism or evocative landscapes, although it’s hard to define in a few words. I do not usually intend the paintings to be figurative but they are often given meaning by the viewer’s imagination. I want people to feel rested when they look at my work – to wander through the paintings seeing something different each time they look at them and explore and find their own magic that is there. I suppose my aim in work and life is to try and lift peoples' spirits. I feel that our lives can be fraught and stressful so I am always trying to create beauty and make people smile!
28
3. HOW IMPORTANT IS COLOUR IN YOUR ART WORK? Colour is hugely important in my work, it’s what brings a piece to life. Most of my recent works in my Happiness and Playtime collections are full of wild, glorious colour. Using luscious, thick oil paints in all the colours of the rainbow has been joyous and so exciting. Our lives are a series of stories and colour can change the way they are told. With my recent colour palette I aim to take you on a journey and remind you of brighter days and faraway trips with an oasis of wild, luscious colour and vibrancy.

4. WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION / HAVE YOU GOT MENTORS / OTHER ARTISTS YOU LOOK UP TO? I am influenced and inspired by everything around me and everywhere I go, often in the most unexpected places; a crumbling old wall in an alleyway, peeling posters, an old fishing boat washed up on the shore, aeroplane smoke trails in the sky. I admire many artists particularly Paul Klee and Banksy but I have always tried to follow my own path, be guided by my own intuition and not to worry about outside influences.
5. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY/ TIPS ON/ TO START BEING CREATIVE WITH ART AND HOW CAN WE EXPRESS OURSELVES THROUGH PAINTING? My advice is be true to yourself, keep your integrity and create what you love not what you think might be commercial.

Jessica Russell Flint text by Anouska Lancaster, graphics by Karolina Barnes, images by Jessica Russell Flint
As an adventurous artist and designer; I am constantly craving inspiration in the form of colour and pattern. It’s a thirst that is rarely quenched. I have never come across an individual or a brand who shares my huge desire for eccentricity; and who shares my fearless approach when it comes to pushing the boundaries. That was until I met an illustrator and entrepreneur Jessica Russell Flint at the design show ‘Pulse’ back in May. Two words – ‘show stopping’. That is how I’d describe the feast of visionary delights that literally stopped me in my tracks as I entered the Grand Hall at London’s Olympia. I met with Jessica Russell Flint to talk about her courageous and spirited brand; a brand that is rapidly taking the interior and fashion world by storm.
“The key to using colour is to ensure it's balanced in the right way, mixed with some more natural based items.”
33
1. HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS COME ABOUT? Fresh out of uni, I started on a grad scheme for a big advertising agency here in London, and worked my guts out for five or six years, climbing the greasy pole. I'd trained at St. Martins in illustration but hadn’t used it in any professional manner. After the first six years on the career ladder, when most of my free time was spent partying, I began to get more into the drawing again and started blogging my illustrations and art. I got a good following and after an exhibition at the Clerkenwell gallery I launched a range of quirky napkins and a range of make-up bags featuring these designs. The brand sort of evolved from there, and whilst it started as a part time venture I eventually had to give up working in the ad industry to focus on the brand full time. I now have a couple of people working for me out of our Dalston based studio and we have a lot of fun - the product range is pretty huge now! From silk and cashmere scarves to canvas and leather giant wash bags, make-up bags, umbrella's, beach sarongs, wallpaper, fabrics and we're launching our new tech range next month... every product is limited edition, to keep in with the art theme. The brand is all about celebrating colour and life! There to enjoy.
34
2. WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGNS? So much inspires me! I never have enough time to do it all!! I tend to be really inspired by characters, colours, people, design, fashion, eyes, shapes, animals, and pattern. I grew up in a fairly bohemian household, and my surroundings and aesthetic were always important to me, particularly the way that it can make you feel. I always remember feeling quite homesick in bland environments! I never understood how people could feel at home in an unintentionally minimalist home. It might sound fickle; this sort of person has far more academic issues at the forefront of their mind to worry about the art on their walls or the cushions on their chairs! But for me, aesthetic environment was always important to how I felt, and how I wanted others to feel.
35
3. HOW IMPORTANT IS COLOUR PATTERN IN YOUR DESIGN WORK? Colour is super important. I think balance is key. I know it may not seem like this as a lot of my designs are clashing colours with lots of elements, but it does take a long time to reach the right composition. Some of my interior pieces tend to be super bright cushions or clashing coloured napkins, but in this situation I'd always encourage them to be placed somewhere less hectic to brighten up a room - or even as outdoor summer cushions! The key to using colour is to ensure it's balanced in the right way, mixed with some more natural items. My style is certainly old English/old Danish - meets contemporary. I love the old English style, antiques mixed with scrubbed floors and pared back walls - with bright contemporary accessories and art. I have some friends who live in Berlin in a beautiful old German house in Edelhofdamm and it epitomises this style. Scrubbed wooden floors with old windows, old pieces of furniture from their grandfather and muted wall colours in greens, greys and beiges, but totally contemporary with a mix of brightly coloured art pieces, books on art and design crowding the book cases, contemporary floor cushions and Scandi light pieces. The whole thing is minimalist without being clutter-free and has a totally well-balanced feel.
36
4. HOW CAN COLOUR EMPOWER IN TERMS OF FEEL GOOD FACTOR? Colour is sooo important in my opinion. Everyone has different taste and whilst someone could get high off a neon pink vibe, others feel happier with cool calm colours in greens and blues. It's all about finding out what you like, what makes you feel strong, calm and happy. Getting swatch cards can really help with finding out how you feel about colour in the home... the classic Farrow and Ball is something you can’t really fail with. Colour is also important in empowering individuals through fashion...in fashion terms what colours suit you totally vary from person to person - we can get it totally wrong. A lot of people don’t realise that each individual has a colour chart that will suit them. There are all sorts of "colour matching" style services out there! Personal assistants who come and check out your skin tones, hair tones, eye colour, etc to advise on what colours go with your natural tones. It can totally transform a personal style and be very empowering in terms of confidence in what you look like!
37
5. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO LOVES COLOURS AND PATTERN BUT IS AFRAID TO USE THEM IN THEIR HOME? Start small, for example, on the walls people often use a white tone, but just experimenting a couple of shades off white can make a huge difference to the feel of a home - again, colour charts are great. If you like blue, for example, choose a white with blue tones and experiment with one wall at a time, don’t go full blown "Blue blue" at first.... When it comes to pattern, keep it simple if you're nervous or not 100% then don’t go choosing a whole patterned arm chair or sofa, buy a cushion in a similar print and get used to it. Bring in pieces of pattern one at a time, a patterned rug over the arm of a chair or sofa, a patterned pot or bright piece of art - just do it slowly and think about it - a home is developed over time and no one needs to do it all at once. And whilst I'd never advocate a two-way colour scheme, the last thing you want is a headache of bright clashing colours. Bring in new colours one at a time, but go with a vague colour palette in mind - i.e. oranges and blues and neutrals, pinks and greens and neutrals... that way it's hard to go wrong. I personally like plain-ish larger items and lots of bright pops of colour, layering items to get a homely but stylish vibe always with a neutral canvas.

VACATION PACKING The Guide words and images by Flavia Young
July is here, so it is finally time to pack our bags and GO!! A notoriously difficult month in terms of fashion shopping, July is stuck between the end of the sales and the pre-fall collections, which means it is tricky to compile a shopping list. I find that although summer has only just started, I am already bored with my "high summer" wardrobe, so I am looking out for fresh pieces from the new collections which are very much buy now, wear now investments. A few of the most interesting surprises during my search, were that two designers I had fallen out of love with, have made it back onto my radar. Emilio Pucci, because one must never be afraid of a good print and Isabel Marant, because despite the label's insistence on continuing to produce those ghastly wedged sneakers and its inconsistent cloth quality, it has aced the pre-fall collections. Truly covetable, easy to wear, less boho pieces that will work really hard in a "between seasons" wardrobe. Here are my picks for the suitcase...and California road trip here I come!!

Taylor Blake words and graphics by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Taylor Blake
Sometimes all you need is simple every day shoes that are stylish, highly versatile and practical. Taylor Blake was founded in 2015 with a mission to create shoes that are beautifully designed, yet won't fall apart after a season's wear. Specialising in highly distinctive ballet flats, the founders, Emily and Tracey, create instantly recognisable shoes made by hand by skillful craftsmen in Spain, using real leathers, suedes and materials in striking colour combinations. I talk to them about the importance of colour, style and their view on trends.
61
1.
What is the concept for your store? We wanted Taylor Blakes to have a signature look that is instantly recognisable. We wanted to design a distinctive range of ballet flat shoes of superior quality leathers and craftsmanship that crucially, are comfortable enough to wear everyday. From the very beginning we have been obsessed with quality. We hunted out the best factory in Spain, we specified full leather uppers with padded leather insoles, we hand picked bows for their rigidity, gems for their shimmer, leathers for their softness and made sure the final product looked exactly how Emily had designed them.
“ We believe that quality designs are timeless. Because our materials are different, the quality outshines fast fashion or throw away style.”
2.
Trend vs style - how do you compete in a very trend oriented market? We work on the matra that quality designs are timeless. Rose pink suedes, mulberry snakeskins, emerald green jewels, simmering gold leathers…- our materials are different and designed to make our shoes look unique and this sort of quality outshines fast fashion or throw away styles.
62
3.
How important are colour and style in your collection design? Our second collection, Kaleidoscope is a celebration of colour. Wonderfully bright statement purple, quintessentially British post-box red, perfect for summer coral and classic navy and black….- they all have the consistent simmering gold leather toe except for Gold Lora where the gold leather rightfully takes centre stage and makes way for a black leather toe. Over 40% of our customers have 2, 3 or even 4 pairs of our shoes and we wanted them to have a choice of colours for every day! Our next collection is currently just sketches and swatches stuck on Emily’s sketch pad but we’ll be flying out to Spain soon to find the perfect leathers to make these shoes every bit as glamorous and comfy as the first two collections.

I came across Marina London on Instagram and instantly fell in love with their S/S16 collection. Founded in 2011 Marina Guergova, after graduating from Central Saint Martins, the label focuses on designing silks that stand the test of time through quality and wearability. The S/S2016 was inspired by flamingo pinks and emerald greens. The silhouettes, in this collection, have a nod to the 70s & 90’s featuring turtleneck details, full silk trousers, carefree dresses and skirts with hidden shorts. Perfect for summer holidays! (Almost) Naked Nails words and photography by Nicola
Neutral nails were a huge Summer 2016 catwalk trend and offer a breath of fresh air from the usual zingy brights. There's something very polished (pardon the pun) about a neutral, my-nails-but-better shade. It goes with everything, is low maintenance (chips are less obvious) and always looks elegant.

While traditionally nude, mannequin-esque nails have been around forever, Summer '16 brings a shift towards barely there tones. Try sheer French Manicure style glosses such as French Nude by Parisian brand, Kure Bazaar (on my thumb) or Angel from Jessica's Phenom line (on my pinkie). Both leave a semi-sheer, barely-pink milky finish that looks equally good at the office or picnics in the park. For a slightly more opaque finish, Muchi Muchi by Essie (ring finger) is the perfect ballerina pink without a hint of sugary sweetness. Imagine the petals of the palest pink rose and you're there. A wide, curved brush makes this a dream to apply. Traditionally nude beige rose shades work well on a lot of skin tones and Nails Inc George Street (middle finger) is a great option. Try Porchester Square if you prefer a slightly deeper colour with cool undertones. Barry M gives luxury brands a run for their money this season with a classy nude collection to comlement a variety of skin tones, such as Beachy Keen (fore finger), a warm neutral that will flatter deeper skins and help fairer skins avoid the mannequin look. Neutral nails make hands look more elegant just as nude heels elongate legs. They're easy to carry off and great for beginners as application is easier than with darker polishes... it's all about finding the most flattering shade for you. Fancy mixing things up a bit? Try pastels for a gentle whisper of colour, pale metallics for added interest or stark white for a bold contrast.

KERASTASE words and photography by Karla Cihak
This month I would like to bring my attention to haircare. After all, they say that hair is the crown of beauty. During the summer months our hair is put to the test the most. High UV rays and water aggressors make the hair dry, weak and more prone to breakage. My hairdresser recommended me the Kerastase Soleil range of products specially created for protecting the hair against the negative effects of sun, chlorine and salt water. I've been testing the Bain Apres Soleil shampoo, Lait Richesse conditioner and Masque UV Defense Active mask. All three can be used on a daily basis. My hair is very fine and damaged by regular colouring and highlighting already, so I need products which won't weigh it down. I found that the shampoo and the conditioner are both light yet very effective. My hair feels soft and nourished. To keep my hair protected I use the mask every other day. I apply it on towel dry hair and leave in for 10 minutes. Afterwards I wash it off thoroughly and style my hair as usual. And the result? My hair feels softer, more resiliant and shines more. After testing these three products on myself, I can highly recommend them.

Morello cherry & lime courgette cake words and photography by Jemma Andrew-Adiamah
Zingy zesty lime and sweet morello cherries are a match made in heaven. The star of this recipe is the grated courgette, which makes this cake super fluffy and moist. It’s also gluten free, hurrah! Now don’t get me wrong, adding grated courgette to an already perfectly sounding cake recipe sounds pretty out there, however, carrot cake has done the rounds for years, so why not? I’ve always wanted to try making courgette brownies but wasn’t in a chocolate mood weeks ago when I made this. Instead, I was after something fresh and light to match the summer sunshine that was streaming in through my kitchen windows.
ingredients 1 cup ground almonds 11/2 cups fine polenta 1 courgette, grated 1 cup coconut oil, melted 3/4 cups fruit sugar
4 eggs 1 tsp gluten free baking powder 1 cup dried morello cherries, halved Juice and zest of 2 limes
method Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and prepare a non-stick loaf tin. Beat together the eggs, fruit sugar, lime juice and melted coconut oil until well combined. Pour in the ground almonds, polenta, baking powder, grated courgette and lime zest. Mix until just combined. Gently stir in the dried morello cherries and transfer the batter to the loaf tin. Bake for 40-50 minutes at 180 degrees until golden brown or when a skewer placed in the centre of the cake comes out clean (timing dependent on oven type). Enjoy!

Sarah Edwards text and photography by Karolina Barnes, image provided by Bell & Fox
I talked to Sarah Edwards, the founder and designer behind a British handbag and leather accessories brand bell & fox, about her passion for creativity, design and effortless style. Sarah launched her first handbag collection in autumn 2015 after many years spent working within premium accessories design. Her mission is to offer modern leather handbags and accessories that combine calm and relaxed style with quality and function.

1. How did you get to where you are now? After completing a degree in Footwear & Accessories Design back in 1992, I have worked as a designer and buyer for a number of brands including Clarks, Topshop, Monsoon, Reiss and Radley to name just a few. Having gained over 24 years of experience, I had a "now or never" moment to start my own brand called bell & fox!
2. What was the trigger for you that made you to change the direction of your career? All of my experiences have led me to where I am now. There wasn't really one big trigger for me. Rather, there were many signs over the past few years that I couldn't ignore anymore. I was freelancing and working in directorial roles that didn't satisfy my creative side. I reached a point where I just had to do something about it. I knew if things didn't work out, I could always go back to where I was. But, I just had to give it a go.

3. What is the concept and your mission with bell & fox? bell & fox is a new brand, a new collection of contemporary, luxurious leather handbags and accessories designed with a British spirit, for the woman with effortless style. Launched in AW15, I wanted to channel my years of experience within premium accessories design to form my own brand. Inspired by my passion to create a modern collection of leather handbags and accessories, combining style with function to form a collection of accessible luxury, bell & fox was born. I love effortless style that works with our now more relaxed way of life and dress code, and have drawn on my British heritage and passion for vintage silhouettes and detailing to create a range of luxurious leather bags and accessories that can be worn on any occasion. As your hardest working accessory, quality and function are key – my bags are made in beautiful full grain leather with interior mobile phone and tablet pockets designed for a modern lifestyle.
“Find out what you love doing and just go for it because you definitely don't want to live your life full of regrets.” 4. Clearly you are passionate about making a difference and are doing what you love. What advice would you give to anyone who wants to get into the fashion industry or start designing their own product? I would advise to research the market to get you prepared as much as possible. That way it's all less scary, if you have an idea about how things work. Make sure that whatever you decide to do, you absolutely love it, you need to be passionate about it, because there will be long hours and lots of ups and downs. Be brave and just go for it. You have one life and you definitely don't want to live with regrets.
