HIGH IN STYLE the sophisticated way of living MAY 2016

QUIRKY SOPHISTICATION 1

Welcome

to the May issue of HIGH IN STYLE!

I can't quite believe that we are already on issue 9. of our High In Style magazine. It seems like yesterday when we launched our first issue back in September. Each issue is an opportunity to grow, experiment and collaborate with brilliant creative minds that hopefully inspire you in your daily life. And so the May issue is slightly different. You will notice some new features; such as the tribal themed shopping section and the newly improved "colours of the month" section. Both tell visual stories. The main message here is to be brave and allowing yourself to experiment with pattern, colours and textures not only in your home and wardrobe but also play with new make-up products, visit a new place or try new recipe. Be open-minded! And finally, don't miss the "open-up & inspire" interview with Meg Cope from Zaccys at the back. It truly is one of the most fascinating stories I've heard to date. Her journey from being an eye surgeon to becoming a shoe designer is so inspiring. It just shows that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. Happy reading!

Contemporary classic text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Natasha Freeman

Mixing materials and styles in a subtle way can be very challenging. But that's exactly what interior designer, Natasha Freeman from Freeman & Whitehouse, achieved in this North West Victorian family home. She managed to blend the old with the new creating a contemporary classic - a beautifully cohesive and highly functional home that fits perfectly all modern family needs.

Previous page and bottom: This living room opens up to the newly extended kitchen and so there are elements, such as the zinc table, that link the two spaces together.

9

The restricted but interesting colour palette flows naturally and effortlessly from one room to the other making this home light and airy. Instead of strong and overpowering colours or accessories, small elements and details act as reminders of the personalities that live here. This home is a perfect example of how to create a calm and relaxing space in which you can take refuge, recharge and face the world again.

“I like to try to mix materials and styles in a subtle way to add more interest to a room.” BLACKBOARDS " I am obsessed with chalkboards and this was my favourite one yet. We had a small empty wall space between the playroom and kitchen that seemed to be perfect for children’s doodles and adults shopping lists. It really helped to turn the space into a home."

10

Previous page, top and bottom: The centre of the house is this open plan kitchen - diner. Contrasting was key here. Mixing stainless steel with smooth white corian, dark rich blue with subtle light grey and white on cabinets, and farmhouse style table with contemporary kitchen units.

11

12

Previous page and above: The upstairs has white painted floorboards throughout to maximise the space. A touch of Scandinavian feel makes the space cosy and peaceful.

Designer’s Tip “To create a serene and peaceful feel use white scheme as a base. You can make it more interesting by liven it up with small accents such as soft furnishings, cushions and accessories. "

Quirky Sophistication text by Karolina Barnes, photography by Nick Huggins

We talked to an award winning interior designer, Anouska Lancaster from Noushka Design, about her passion for colour and individuality in interiors. Anouska is one of those rare British designers who are able to make a room unique and quirky yet highly sophisticated and well balanced. 15

1. HOW DO YOU DEFINE STYLE?

To me, style is an outward reflection of one’s individual personality. It is a way of exposing one’s inner self through imagery, be it how we dress ourselves; or how we dress our home. Our personal style is an outlet into our soul. It is humanly impossible to see inside someone; to see their passions, their pesonality, their sense of humour, their dreams and their visions. That is why style is so important. Style is a powerful tool which enables us to outwardly express ourselves for the world to see. I set up Noushka Design as I was bored of seeing non descript interiors, interiors that didn’t tell a story; and interiors that didn’t have a soul. I believe that everyone is unique, and everyone should have a bespoke interior that reflects and embraces their exclusive personality.

16

2. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE/ROLE MODEL/INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?

I am a huge fan of Kit Kemp’s work. Kit Kemp has always been an inspiration for me. Like me, Kit is not afraid to take a step into the unknown and follow her own intuition; against all the odds and the raised eyebrows. Kit Kemp breaks the rules which runs hand in hand with my personal philosophy that ‘there are no rules in Interior Design’. On paper, my designs should not work……clashing colours, contrasting genres, and intriguing combinations. Yet, the perfect balance of the opposing features, give an overwhelming harmony and a sense of tranquillity to the end result. Whilst at the same time, I ensure that my design schemes fiercely burst with personality and explode with colour. The juxtaposition of these senses, along with the unexpected, is the mantra of my designs. Kit Kemp’s work excited me the first time I saw it, and for me; that is the key to successful design – excitement. With excitement comes passion and inspiration. The rest is easy. Once you’ve found your inner excitement, you’ll find creating your personal design style becomes natural, just like picking out your clothes in a department store. Articulating this personal design style is the key to creating a room that reflects it.

17

3. YOU ARE NOT AFRAID TO USE COLOUR AND TEXTURES IN YOUR DESIGNS. HOW DO YOU THINK COLOUR CAN EMPOWER IN TERMS OF CONFIDENCE AND FEEL GOOD FACTOR?

Colour and texture bring an interior to life. I believe that these two elements are vital in enabling a designer to ‘tell a story’ through the senses of sight and touch. Colour and texture captivate the imagination and draw you in so that you become part of the story rather than simply an ‘outsider looking in’. A successful interior is one that captivates you, that leads you in, one that creates curiosity and intrigue. I was always drawn to books with vibrant and colourful pictures as a child. I always steered away from books that were densely full of manuscript which looked dull and grey to the observing eye. Naturally, we are drawn to colour and beauty which is why colour plays such a vital role in creating our own design style. As individuals we are not one dimensional, we are not grey, and our hopes and dreams are not dull. Every aspect of our personality should be celebrated in colour – our personal space should be a vibrant masquerade of our inner being and our aspirations. This celebration of colour creates happiness, confidence and empowerment. Have you ever worn a striking colour and people turn to notice you? Colour demands attention and respect which builds confidence. Our surroundings can make all the difference in how we feel about ourselves and about others, and it adds immeasurably to our wellbeing.

18

“Colour demands attention and respect which builds confidence.

19

4. HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK IS THE BALANCE OF COLOURS IS IN INTERIORS?

Getting the correct balance of colours in your interior is absolute key. It may often look as though colour has been radically thrown together in varying proportions by chance, but believe it or not, there is a mathematical formula when it comes to creating the correct colour palette. This formula isn’t written into a rule book – it’s just about making the scheme pleasing to the eye and even better, making it memorable. This is most easily done by building the colours as if you were painting a picture. Adding colour layer by layer, stepping back, observing, then adding more or taking away. It’s about trial and error. It’s about taking risks and not being afraid of trying things. I will always use more than one accent colour, and I’ll use these accent colours in varying proportions to create the perfect balance of colour. For example, red is a very powerful and effective colour so I’ll only use it in small doses to add an injection of colour, such as in the form of a cushion or a plate on the wall. Too much red can be claustrophobic and overpowering, so getting the correct balance of colour is absolutely vital. Masterpieces are created by removing the fear and following your intuition. You’ll know when the balance of colour is right because it will make you happy and content; and that’s all that matters. 20

“Masterpieces are created by removing the fear and following your intuition.

21

5. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO LOVES COLOURS BUT IS AFRAID TO USE THEM IN THEIR HOME?

My advice to someone who loves colour, but who is afraid to use it, would be to ‘go for it!’ I know this is often easier said than done, particularly if it’s your first time, but injecting colour into your home is the surest and easiest way of creating a scheme that reflects your own personality and a space where you feel happy and content. The greatest piece of advice I could give would be to follow your instincts and choose one or two colours that you are naturally drawn to. If you love blue, then go for blue. Then, as your confidence grows, add a secondary colour. Create your scheme layer by layer. There is no point in trying to introduce a colour that you not are keen on, as the process will be far more difficult, and the end result will not reflect your individual style or personality. Remember, your interior should a personal reflection of you. It should make you and you alone happy. Be brave and be bold. Trust your instincts. Believe in yourself and be true to yourself.

Anouska's 5 designer tips

1.

INTRODUCE COLOUR THROUGH ACCESSORIES

2.

GIVE YOUR FURNITURE A FRESH LOOK

3.

ADD FRESH FLOWERS TO YOUR SCHEME

Accessories are a great way to introduce colour into your scheme. Affordable and easily available, accessories such as lamps or cushions are easily interchangeable if you feel you’ve added to much or too little.

If you do not want to spend money on new items then why not ‘upcycle’ something that you already have? There are plenty of colourful paints on the market these days which can be easily applied to tired furniture. Why not add a piece of colourful wallpaper to the inside of a cabinet or to the panels of a wardrobe door for extra impact?

I love having fresh flowers in the house. Yet bizarrely, I am always shocked as to the amount of ‘wow factor’ these immediately add to a design scheme. Fresh flowers are a great way of experimenting with colour, particularly if they are brightly coloured. The fact that using fresh flowers changes your scheme’s mood with the seasons, adds a deeper dimension to the overall scheme.

“Fresh flowers are a great way of experimenting with colour, particularly if they are brightly coloured.” 23

4.

WALLPAPER IS A GAME CHANGER I am a huge fan of wallpaper. I cannot get enough of it! Gone are the days when wallpaper was old fashioned and something that our Grandmothers’ covered their walls in. Today’s wallpapers are works of art, striking and exciting, they are artistic feasts for the eyes; exuberating colour and personality. I will often show my clients’ wallpaper samples at our initial consultation to see which ones they are naturally drawn to. It’s intriguing to see which colours and styles they choose, giving me an instant insight to their personality and the look they wish to create. From the chosen wallpaper, accent colours can be easily extracted and picked up at various points around the room. Wallpaper is a fantastic way to make a bold statement, as well as add character and personality in a scheme. It needn’t be a whole room, perhaps start with a small area such as a chimney breast to create a focal point and go from there.

“Hanging a piece of art on the wall will instantly transform any space, and will reflect your personality and style through its message and colours.”

5.

INVEST IN ART Invest in a piece of art. There are options for every budget, be it an investment piece by an established artist, or a piece by an unknown art student. It really doesn’t matter how much it costs, what matters is that you love it and you are drawn to it. Hanging a piece of art on the wall will instantly transform any space, and will reflect your personality and style through its message and colours.

shop we love

Dar Leone text and photography by Karolina Barnes

Dar Leone is a homeware and lifestyle boutique based in London. We talked to its founder, Isatu Funna, about her heritage and travel experiences that inspired her collection of stylish interior, homeware and lifestyle products, and her mission to inject colour and pattern into your home.

27

28

1. Tell me what the concept and mission of your store is? What’s different about it? Our concept is to introduce a unique take on contemporary African and globally inspired interior design. I tend to be inspired by my travels to the Caribbean and my childhood in West Africa also has a very strong bearing on my designs. A key influence is vintage country cloth from Sierra Leone which is what the indigenous wore (a simple tunic made from strips of woven cloth) in centuries past. The textiles really resonate with me and I tend to update our designs to fit a more contemporary desire for bright and saturated colours in design.

29

2. What is the most popular product or design you see in your store? Our most popular product is a range of Barbadian inspired textiles, Fanjul. Inspired by a Barbadian garden in full bloom, Fanjul is a palm print available in three colour ways: Tropic Palm, Desert Palm and Natural Palm. We also sells lots of our travel bags which are available in a range of patterns and in particular our Tropic Marine design sells very well. Tropic Marine is inspired by traditional country cloth from Sierra Leone.

3. Do you follow trends or have you got your own signature style for the store? We are not trend followers. We design with the intent that our products will speak to the buyer for a lifetime.

STYLE

43

44

style is for me text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by A Mothers Edit

Realising that style is a way of living and finding who you truly are is something that we all should be doing. Style isn't only about how you dress. It goes well behind that. Style should be for you. We talked to a fashion blogger and mum of one from A Mother's Edit about the discovery of her unique style and her love for black & white, lace & denim and anything shiny or gold.

“My style makes me feel good, and when I'm feeling good I know I am genuinely a better person to be around.

45

1.Why do you think style is so important? Style is as individual as the individual themselves. It is a means of expressing personality. First impressions count and people see you with their eyes before they 'see' you with their ears. By embracing a style that you love it can bring so much joy. You can have fun with style everyday, the way you dress, the way you do your hair, your home. A life lived in style is far more more exciting than a life without.

“Expressing your style can bring so much joy. You can have fun with style everyday; the way you dress, you do your hair and your home too.

46

2. Style is about finding your own way of “being. How did you find yours? Any tips? I found my style by choosing to surround myself with things I genuinely love. Everything in my home makes me happy when I look at it, ok maybe not the piles of laundry, but the pieces I have bought and brought together to form my family home. The lamps, rugs, art, tables and cushions. And my clothes make me feel good, I love playing 'dress-up' and mixing and matching pieces for a new look. My style makes me feel good, and when I am feeling good I know I am genuinely a better person to be around. It can really affect your mood.

47

3. What are the essential timeless wardrobe piece that you can't be without? A striped t-shirt. I have so many now. They are just so easy to wear. Dressed up with a leather skirt and heels, or down with boyfriend jeans and trainers. It's a classic wardrobe staple that has never really been 'in fashion' but kind of always is. And you can make it yours... whatever your own style is.

4. What would you advise to any woman who is stuck in the style rut and doesn’t know where to start again? Start with the basics and make sure of two things: that they fit well and you feel good in them. Staples would include a good pair of blue jeans, some t-shirts, a soft leather jacket, classic white shirt, some black trousers/jeans and an chic overcoat. Then layer - layering gives you endless looks.

chic nightwear 51

pyjama party words and photography by Karolina Barnes, images by Sundays London

Why keep your pretty nightwear to yourself, when you can turn them into beautiful daywear garments too? This crossover trend has been renewed in recent years but it dates back to the 1920's when elegant evening parties were very popular. It all comes down to the cut, fabric and pattern. Silk, in particular, is a very versatile material that can work well as daywear and nightwear. Here I have discovered two up and coming brands that are offering such crossover collections. 52

53

1.

SUNDAYS LONDON SUNDAYS LONDON specialises in designing luxury nightwear and accessories that add style and comfort into your wardrobe. Inspired by summers spent in the South of France and the jet-set style of the 60’s & 70’s, the garments are the kind that you would be proud to wear at home, for travel & wouldn’t look out of place as day or evening-wear. Created by textile designer Naomi Richards, the latest AW2016 collection features sophisticated patterns and elegant colours which you can mix and match. The collection includes pyjamas, robes, slippers and eye masks all made from silk satin.

LONGSTAFF LONFSTAFF LONGSTAFF LONGSTAFF creates beautiful luxury silk robes, tunics and pyjamas. Taking inspiration from the glamorous 1920's and 1930's, the collections are colourful and bold, yet elegant and sophisticated so you can wear them not only to bed but also around the house. Created by textile designer Sophie Barnard, the garments are made in the U.K. From textile and garment design to fabric printing and final stitching, it all takes place within 150 miles from each other.

The “ Summer dressing right now...” words and images by Flavia Young

“Boho chic” is just not for me, as I really struggle with the concept of a semi-dress up party look just because is summer. I rather dress to express who I am - all year around. So, within my own style tribe - the overly cliched, “classic with a twist”, I find that one easy way to stay true to my style in the summer months, is by pairing my usual contemporary classic pieces with clashing prints and textures. Something that adds a playful mood without completely steering away from who I am during the rest of the year. I also find it is more cost effective to invest in a couple of playfully contemporary pieces that can be incorporated into your usual style, than to buy a boho wardrobe to wear for three months of the year. This season, Scandi cool label, Baum und Pferdgarten have really nailed the perfect balance between playful and chic. Discover my top picks here….

makeup sticks words and photography by Nicola

There's something about using colourful sticks and crayons that brings joy to face painting, or drawing, to be precise. From eyeshadow to blush, draw-it-on-makeup is quick, easy and requires minimal skill or effort to apply. It's also travel friendly, easy to store and doesn't take up much handbag space, making it perfect for on-the-go top ups. Sometimes it's good to pare back our routine and have fun with makeup.

69

2.

EYE STICKS

If you've never used a makeup stick, lips are the easiest place to start. Clinique Chubby Stick Intense and Burt Bees Lip Crayon are well pigmented lipstick/balm hybrids. Bourjois Color Boost is a brilliant budget option with a glossy, semi sheer finish, while Bobbi Brown Art Sticks offer pigmentation that packs a semi-matte punch. Sensai Silky Design Rouge lip crayons are somewhere in the middle, with a satin finish and featherlight, smooth as silk texture.

If you struggle to master a smoky eye, an eyeshadow crayon is your new best friend. Apply along upper lash line (or up to socket), smudge out the edges with a finger or small brush and ta da! By Terry Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Moon is the eye crayon of dreams, though KIKO Long Lasting Stick Eyeshadow comes a close second at a quarter of the price. LOC (Love of Colour, by Birchbox) One and Done Shadow Sticks give an all over wash of colour for an instantly groomed eye in seconds and Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pens are so soft and pigmented that they can be smoked out and last all day. 70

3.

FACE STICKS Blush, contour and highlight sticks are more foolproof than you'd think... apply over foundation and blend out with a finger or fluffy brush for a skin-like finish. Clinique Chubby in the Nude foundation stick blends well with a buffing brush (or a finger for touching up small areas) - a desk/ handbag staple. Topshop Everything Stick blends like a dream on cheeks; Smashbox and KIKO Contour Sticks work well and Clinique Hefty Highlight gives instant gleaming cheekbones without glitter, a godsend for slightly more mature skins.

tried & tested

NeoStrata words and photography by Karla Cihak

I must admit. I want to feel great and look younger. Especially when summer is just around the corner. So I went for a chemical peel to give my complexion a boost. In general, chemical peel removes a layer of damaged skin from the face by a chemical reaction to reveal a newer, healthier layer giving the face more youthful appearance. The peel is applied with a gel and you may experience some burning and redness. However, these side effects only last for a few hours or few days. After the procedure, I was recommended a brand new range of skincare products from Neostata. Neostrata's product ranges are mainly based on Polyhydroxy Acid technology found in natural ingredients such as fruit. My dermatologist recommended me four products from their Resurface range. I use the Antioxidant Defense Serum and Matrix support daily cream every morning, and Firming Collagen Booster with Dermal Replenishment nigh cream in evenings. You will notice that after application your skin might start to peel for a few days. However, this is perfectly normal. I have noticed that after around 10 days the products softened the look of my wrinkles and my skin feels beautifully soft and has a nice glow. ADVICE: Please speak to your dermatologist about the best skincare programme for your type of skin. LEARN MORE ABOUT IT HERE 73

do Walk from Alexander Platz to Brandenburger Tor There are so many landmarks, historical buildings and museums to visit that you don't know where to start. We had only a long weekend to explore this beautiful city so unfortunately we didn't get to see everything. But even a short visit wouldn't be complete without walking down the famous "Under den Linden" which leads nicely to the Brandenburger Tor. We also visited the Charlottenburg Palace (on the left), which was the residence of the first queen of Prussia, Sophie Charlotte. Its interiors are magnificent and very inspiring.

shop Joop and Bocci There are many shopping centres and malls around Berlin but when I'm in Germany I always stop off at Joop boutiques. Their womenswear collections are about simplicity, comfort, elegant and timeless look. We also visited the Bocci showroom. The only one in Europe. Bocci is a Canadian lighting design studio. Its Berlin's branch is located within a historic courthouse built in 1896. Its architecture creates a beautiful backdrop for Bocci's contemporary glass lighting, which is displayed like art in art gallery.

Three Bean Mexican Tortilla Pizza words and photography by Jemma Andrew-Adiamah

84

READY IN 40 MIN

three bean mexican tortilla pizza Now who doesn’t love pizza? I’m sure there is only a teeny minority that doesn’t succumb to the temptation of all that melty cheese and warm dough goodness. Would you believe me if I was to tell you that this pizza is healthier than your favourite frozen pizza or takeaway? It doesn’t scrimp on flavour, cheese or tasty toppings and it’s fast become one of my favourite pizzas EVER! The base of the pizza couldn’t be any simpler, it’s made using a gluten-tortilla wrap and topped with a speedy vegetarian three bean chilli, mozzarella and manchego cheese to create that oozy goodness. The tortilla wrap creates a tasty crisp base and cuts out some of the heaviness and calories of a traditional pizza base.

ingredients 1 cup black beans 1 cup red kidney beans 1 cup cannellini beans 4 spring onions 2 cloves garlic 1 pack taco seasoning

12 Peppadew Mild Piquante Peppers 1 cup grated manchego cheese 1 cup mozzarella 6 gluten free tortilla wraps dried oregano to garnish (optional)

method Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Slice the spring onions and garlic. Heat some oil in a pan on a medium heat, add the garlic and spring onions. Cook for 3-5 minutes. Pour in the black beans, red kidney beans and cannellini beans, taco seasoning, passata. Simmer on a low heat for 15-20 minutes. Half the Peppadew Mild Piquante Peppers and stir into the sauce. Lay out your tortilla wraps and top with the bean mixture, spreading it right to the edges. Sprinkle over the mozzarella and manchego cheese and bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes. Top with dried oregano to serve. Enjoy!

Meg Cope text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Meg Cope

We talked to the founder of a new luxury brand Zaccys, Meg Cope, about her amazing journey from being a consultant eye surgeon to espadrille designer. Meg talks candidly about her trigger to change direction of her professional journey, her ups and downs and her mission she has for Zaccys.

1. How did you get to where you are now? My journey starts back in my childhood, aged 5, when my father’s cousin was living with us whilst she was studying fashion at Central St Martins. I thought her sketches were the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I have always been a little obsessed with design and fashion and was extremely fortunate to have a mother that was not only infinitely patient but also a whizz with a sewing machine. She indulged my desire to design my own clothes, whipping up various creations and even customizing school uniform to my specific requirements! However, I chose to follow another great passion of mine – medicine - inspired by my father and my grandfather. It was sheer determination and the support of my family that drove me through medical school and into the competitive world of eye surgery. There I found enormous satisfaction and a real love of my daily work. It was an incredible privilege to be a doctor, to have that uniquely close relationship with patients and to develop skills that could make such a difference to people’s lives. I was a doctor for more than 20 years and a Consultant Eye Surgeon for 10 of those. However, my life changed direction completely with my son’s illness and I am now following my creative instincts once again in setting up my own niche luxury shoe business.

2. How did your outlook on life / priorities changed after your son’s diagnosis? Zac was diagnosed with leukaemia on Valentine's Day 2012 and our lives were certainly turned upside down. The treatment he required was very intensive in the first year and we spent a great deal of time in hospital. This was followed by a further 2 1/2 years of ongoing treatment. During these long years it was more about daily survival, the logistics of looking after my other two children and trying to continue a normal balanced family life with extended family and friends, without whom we certainly would not have coped. Throughout my career, family has always been priority for me but my fundamental relationship with medicine was altered by these years of Zaccy’s treatment. I no longer saw hospitals in the same way. I felt the care and energy I had left in me needed to be reserved for my children and family. I no longer felt I had the empathy and desire to care for patients in the same way. On a practical level I also couldn’t envisage returning to my previous working schedule. I always enjoyed my work most when I felt most capable at it - returning to surgery after such a protracted break wasn’t something I relished. I believe the ‘silver lining’ of Zac’s illness was that I got to spend more time at home looking after my children. Simply being able to give them breakfast in the morning, take them to school, to collect them again and help them with homework or their worries was a real luxury. I finally got to see what I’d been missing during all the years of juggling a demanding job with various childcare arrangements. Ultimately I also felt emboldened by our struggles through Zac’s treatment, it made me realise more than ever that you only have one life, you really do have to make the most of it, take risks and follow your instincts to make your life the one you really want to live.

3. You started to pursue your passion for creativity out your frustration of not finding the perfect replacement for your espadrilles. How did you overcome your fears of stepping into the unknown, outside your comfort zone? More than anything I didn’t think about it too much! My career in medicine was mapped out for years. But in stark contrast my foray into the world of fashion and business was almost entirely blind, I really didn’t plan it, I was blissfully ignorant. Initially I was focused on creating something I genuinely felt didn’t exist and which would bring pleasure to women who wanted what I did, namely beauty and comfort in their footwear! Once I decided I wanted to join the world of ‘start-ups’ I was very fortunate that my husband was on garden leave, in between jobs, so he was able to help me with areas of the business that I was less familiar with, including the practicalities of setting up a new company.

4. Setting up a new business while juggling motherhood is hard. How do you manage to keep going? Since my first child was born I have been juggling motherhood and a career. Just like the many other working mothers, it sometimes seems to be an impossible challenge that requires daily compromises and can be exhausting. The demands of setting up a new business are quite different, in that most of the time I have been able to dictate my working hours. I can fit my schedule around the children’s school hours and work again in the evening once they have gone to bed. My trips abroad have been difficult. I have felt extremely torn, but between my wonderful mother and long-suffering husband (around on garden leave) they made it possible. The downside to starting a new business is the tendency to never switch off. I have realized it is also essential to set aside some time to relax. 90

5. What advice would you give to anyone who’s been thinking about changing their career and setting up their own business? In most cases a career change creates some form of financial risk so you should ensure that you are able to withstand any issues or problems that delay the point where your business is profitable. Talk to as many people as possible to get a clear sense of whether you have a good idea. I believe a credible plan combined with determination, passion and perhaps a little luck are a strong starting point. Ultimately one must be courageous and tenacious and keep in mind that we are the masters of our own destiny.
