modern eclectic family home Step inside this modern eclectic family home of an interior designer Erin Williamson. This is where each room has its own personality yet strong palette of blues and creams are the common theme throughout making it cohesive and fluid. “I tend to view interior design as cinematic. Books and movies have always informed my aesthetic sensibility, and I often find myself creating narratives for rooms. It’s magical to see it all come to life as a living, breathing, functional thing.

9

Neutrals don’t have to be boring. Erin’s master bedroom (on right) is a great example of how to do a neutral space with a personal twist. Mixing patterns and textures within a restrictive colour palette is key.

“Our job is to take your individual narrative and translate it into a living, breathing space as functional as it is handsome.” Erin Williamson, Interior Designer

10

11

12

In the dining area the bold Farrow & Ball’s Arsenic wall paint is surprising yet sophisticated. It creates a beautiful backdrop against the mid-century Italian chairs and the statement Italian brass chandelier. The space is dramatic and confident but without being too overpowering.

13

14

This bathroom is a perfect example of how much wallpaper can do for a small space. The key here is to choose metallic and textured finish helping the light to bounce around. So even though it might be a small space is square footage it feels visually so much bigger.

16

“Design is about tailoring rooms to embody the stories of the people who will use them.

calm modern organics An interior designer wears many hats. Apart from being a creator and visionary, architect and negotiator, one of the most important roles is “being able to edit. Knowing where to source products, what to keep, remove and change becomes one of the most important roles of any successful designer. Marianne Six can do just that. She manages to orchestrate a whole project in a cohesive and well thought out way that looks so effortless and interesting.

21

22

The living room and dining room are decorated in neutral palette with modern organic materials that are not only easy on the eye but also robust and hard wearing.

“I believe our home should be our refuge as well as a reflection of our personality. Marianne Six, Interior Designer

23

By not making this little girl’s bedroom themed, the room becomes ageless. Neutral walls allow the space to breathe and set the background upon which a new colour scheme can be built as years go by.

Where functionality meets aesthetics. Marianne’s approach to clean lines, order and solid yet calming colour scheme not only makes a house a home and refuge but also gives room for expressing one’s personality. Her signature style doesn’t follow trends. Instead she analyses her client’s needs and characteristics which are strongly represented throughout the space. It’s where practicality meets creativity.

1. TELL US WHAT THE CONCEPT OF YOUR STORE IS?

2. WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCT / TREND YOU SEE?

ohwhatsthis is a homewares & trends marketplace. It began from a hobby of mine, I've always loved helping people find things for their home and I search high and low to find it! I moved in with my boyfriend and became obsessed with finding things for our home. I get this urge to share it with people, so I'd blog about trends on Oh What's This and show people where to find things. Without realising I'd begun to build a bit of a database of amazing independent brands and retailers. I actually think it's quite hard to find nice homewares on the highstreet and there are so many beautiful brands out there, so that gave me the idea to create a place where people could shop these brands in one place. Most of the brands on there (we've got about 25+) I've found myself, a few have contacted me to be on OWT and I love that, it shows there is a definite opportunity here to champion interior brands. But as well as the new OWT shop, people can shop through the trend boards I create. A lot of people like to shop directly from a look at the moment. I'm very picky when it comes to choosing suppliers, I have a rule with myself that if there's something I wouldn't have in my home or I don't immediately love I won't feature it as I know the customer might think the same. This way I can keep everything consistently gorgeous. It's all about sparking that "oh what's this moment" for someone when they see something they really want for their home.

Well after the pineapple craze died down (I will forever love pineapples - I have 4 pineapple ornaments at home), copper has got to be a big trend that everyone is still loving. I sprayed a lot of things copper in my copper phase, so I hope I'm still loving it in months to come! Mid Century is everywhere these days and is one of my favourite eras for design as it includes a lot of different styles, but emerging from this is the 70's revival trend which is also popular at the moment. So products like the berber rug, kawa chair and cactus or hanging planters.

KAWA chair Glass hanging planter

3. HOW DO YOU DEFINE STYLE? I don't really follow trends and never have (Apart from copper!). I have a sense of when something is going to be on trend, which most interior lovers / fashion lovers just have innately. So the trend boards I build are just from finding products I love and building inspiration around it. At the moment I'm absolutely obsessed with Chinese ginger jars so looked all over to find some for Oh What's This. I managed to find a supplier who sells beautiful blue and white ceramics, so they are in the shop at the moment. I just hope everyone else loves them as much as me. In terms of signature style OWT is mainly built on what I love rather than following KAWA chair others. I'm never into one kind of look only - so this means OWT welcomes a mix of styles from Mid Century, Moroccan, Scandinavian to bohemian but despite of this I hope I've managed to create a distinctive style to promote these amazing brands with.

LUXDIVINE JEWELLERY

TIBA & MARL BAGS

SALLY HANSEN MIRACLE GEL

LUXDIVINE.COM

TIBAANDMARL.COM

SALLYHANSEN.COM

I’m always on a look out for a great statement necklace which goes well with anything, being a pair of jeans and white t-shirt or a pretty dress. I recently discovered my love for layering my jewellery and so when I spotted these 24kt gold necklaces on Etsy I was so happy. They are handmade in California and because of that each of them is unique. So much better than the mass-produced high street alternatives!

I’m so excited to introduce you to Tiba & Marl bags. When I look back at my baby changing bags they were pretty boring and didn’t really go with anything apart from the matching pushchair. But now changing bags got stylish. Finally! I love how they changed the design of the bag into a tote which has enough space for baby changing mat, laptop and smart phone. It also has an insulated bottle holder and even a space for a dummy. Genius!

Having been a fan of Bio Sculpture Gel for many years, I was very sceptical of trying out the new Sally Hansen Miracle Nail Gel. It is promoted as a two-week manicure which was the main reason why I bought it. And even though it doesn’t last full 14 days (more likely 10 days) without minor touching up, I was very surprised by the quality and durability of the nail polish. The best part is that the top coat really doesn’t loose its shine at all. I absolutely love it!

school to office

dash words and images by Flavia Young

It is no secret that modern lives continue to impose demanding pressures on women. We continue to hold down careers and are still largely the main care givers to our children. So, the ritual of getting dressed in the mornings is a balancing act – one that requires planning ahead for that perfectly stylish look that will see you through the day, from the school run to dinner out. Here is what I’ve learnt from my 20 odd years in the fashion business: women don’t want to dress like magazine models. In real life, we want comfortable, well made clothes that are luxurious, yet practical. Trust me, even fashion editors have a daily uniform and they are normal, real clothes too.

Master these 3 steps and you shall never utter the words : ”I have nothing to wear ” again.

1.

The art of layering

2.

Always buy the best fit & fabric your money can buy

Light blouse, sweater, outerwear.

Because in the long run, the cost per wear will be on your side.

3.

Use print sporadically Stick to neutral hues that compliment each other and your skin colour. Prints can tire easily so buy just a few key pieces. 43

3 easy step routine

1.

primer MAC Prep & Prime Fix + Instead of drying primers, a few sprits of this refreshing spray after your moisturiser but before your foundation, creates the perfect base to set your foundation. Once your makeup is fully completed, simply lightly spray all over the face again (eyes closed!) and watch your pores disappear and your makeup set without drying or creating a thick layer of product on your skin. The perfect multi-use product before and after your morning routine.

2.

foundation Two Faced Born This Way foundation For medium to full coverage, this weightless formula defies physics and creates the perfect base that doesn’t sink into lines and imperfections. Buildable coverage that lasts all day and night, this is your secret weapon to perfect skin. Chanel Lift Lumiere Firming and Smoothing Fluid Makeup For light coverage, one small pump covers your entire face, leaving it dewy soft with an internal glow and a natural looking finish. No one will even know you are wearing foundation! 50

3.

concealer

Maybelline Eraser Eye Concealer This high street favourite weightlessly covers under eye circles and lifts and brightens your face. Our favourite bargain product, it's lightweight formula blends beautifully with your foundation and seamlessly covers any signs of tiredness. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer A warm creamy yellow product that beautifully covers red or purple shadows. Blendable and buildable, this won't highlight lines or wrinkles and will leave you looking bright eyed and refreshed.

top tips When applying the foundation, use foundation brush to apply all over your face and blend into your neck. Using a damp Beauty Blender, pat your foundation into place for the perfect airbrushed finish. Choose a concealer shade that's one shade lighter than your natural skin tone and apply in a triangle shape from each corner of your eye and down towards your nose to ensure there's no 'white shadow' tell tale signs you've used concealer. You can also use these products as a highlighter - on tops of cheekbones, middle of forehead, tip of your nose, above your cupid's bow and on your chin to lighten and brighten your face, making you look instantly more awake and radiant. 51

tried & tested

retrouve face serum words by Karla Cihak

I love skincare. I love creams, their smell and beautiful packaging. Most of all I’m always on a look out for natural products that gently smooth my wrinkles while suit my aging skin characteristics. For the past few years I have tried many skincare products but not all of them suited my skin type very well. Recently, however, I found Retrouve. This luxury skincare brand is packed with vital vitamins, co-enzyme Q10, retinol and antioxidants. There are only 4 products which Retrouve offers: Intensive Replenishing Facial Moisturiser, Nutrient Face Serum, Dynamic Nourishing Face Cream and Revitalising Eye Concentrate. I’ve been using all 4 products for the last couple of months and noticed significant difference in my skin and the way I look. Every morning when I look at myself in the mirror, I say to myself: “Damn, I look good!” My favourite is the Retrouve Face Serum. It has anti-flammatory and epidermal stem cell activating properties. It’s packed with high concentrate of vitamin C, which is great for skin repair. The serum can be used on its own or in conjunction with a day cream or foundation. I absolutely love it! A bit of warning though. Every great skincare range is a bit pricey. This face serum costs around £300 but it’s totally worth it! 53

Ready in 55 min

chicken traybake recipe and words by Lindsay Clark, photography by Karolina Barnes

Sometimes it’s nice to have a simple dinner. We all have those days when we get home from work and just want to put our feet up and do nothing. As much as I am a firm believer in making time for home cooked food, no one wants to get back from a long day and stand cooking for hours every night. Therefore I present to you the fuss free, no mess Chicken Traybake!

ingredients Olive oil, 4 chicken legs or thigh fillets, 3 large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks and parboiled, 300g butternut squash (peeled and cut into chunks) 1 red onion, 6 garlic cloves (2 finely chopped and 4 kept in their skins), chopped tomatoes (optional), 2 sprigs of rosemary, 100g pancetta, 50g unsalted butter, 1/2 a teaspoon of chilli flakes, salt and fresh black pepper, sage for garnish

method Firstly, preheat oven to gas mark 4/180C or 160C for fan assisted ovens. While the oven is heating mix your softened unsalted butter in a bowl with your two finely chopped garlic cloves, roughly chopped rosemary, chilli flakes and a couple of pinches of salt. Once all combined, rub your garlic butter over the four chicken legs or fillets making sure they are well coated and that some of the butter is pushed into the scores and under the skin. Set to one side. Next get a large baking tray and throw in all the ingredients apart from the pancetta. Drizzle in a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and a couple of pinches of salt and mix well. Lay the 4 chicken legs, skin side up, over the veg and then pop into the middle of the oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle the diced pancetta on top. Place back into the oven for a further 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Grind on some fresh black pepper and serve in the tray with some warm ciabatta on the side for moping up the juices. Hello stress free dinner!

“open up & inspire” AN ARTFUL LIFE “It’s great to be your own boss.”

We sat down and talked to Kate Whitfield from An Artful Life, a homeware online store. She’s a mum of two boys and an interior architect. 18 months ago she changed her career path and shares with us all the challenges and benefits of working for yourself.

1. Your illness made you to revalue your professional and home life. How did you overcome the fear of “going into the unknown?” It was an extremely difficult and upsetting decision at the time but I really couldn’t continue my job with my circumstances (health and home life). I only made the decision to quit once I had come up with the plan to set up a little homeware store. This new venture inspired me, and gave me the interest and positivity to turn a slightly forced move into a welcome one. By the time my last day came I was eager to get going!

2. Working from home with two boys around is extremely hard. How do you manage your work / family life balance? It is hard and it can be pretty stressful. I won’t lie, it’s a constant juggling act and I often wish for a time when in my house man / wife can swap roles and I just leave the house every day without having to think about where the kids are going and getting back in time to pick them up! However, having your own business works great with family life as it gives you the flexibility that you need, to pick and choose when to be around for them, and get the odd chore done during the day so it doesn’t all pile up at the weekend! I do know that I work many more hours than the children are in childcare for (first thing in the morning and last thing at night usually), but when you love what you do it’s a pleasure and I honestly have no problem at all with Mondays!

3. Many women are afraid of loosing the financial security and freedom that comes with starting their own business. How did you work around “battling with insecurity”? You may feel you’re loosing financial security at times but you are definitely not loosing any freedom. You are gaining it in so many ways. On the financial side, we were lucky-ish, in that when my partner and I sat down (before I decided to leave my ‘proper’ job) and calculated where we would stand financially, we worked out that we could just about manage the vitals on his salary alone (bearing in mind we have twins so we have always had to pay a lot on childcare for me to work anyway). This would mean no niceties, no holidays, no new clothes. It was tough for a while but if you know that worstcase you can keep going, anything else can be seen as a bonus. I also ended up freelancing for my previous company one day a week right from the outset, so I always knew I had a little money coming in, whilst having the freedom to set up An Artful Life. It’s only been a year and a half but I already know I would really struggle to go back to having tobe office based all week and working for someone else. It’s great to be your own boss!

“You may feel you’re loosing financial security at times but you are definitely not loosing any freedom. You are gaining it in so many ways.”

4. What would you say to anyone who is unhappy in their job and who is thinking about starting their own business or changing their career path? There’s a phrase which I always repeat - which I’ve probably got totally wrong but goes something like - it’s better to regret something that you do, than to regret not doing it at all. I very much agree with this as at least by doing it you know you’ve tried, whereas if you never do that thing, you’ll always wonder... (and regret it more I think). I can’t speak for each individual and their situation but if by trying something different and it all went horribly wrong, there’s probably not many circumstances where you can’t turn around and go back to where you were if you really needed to. Therefore it’s really not such a risk. Although in reality you probably won’t ever want to because you’ll be enjoying your new job and life much more than you ever were. In changing what you do, you also extremely quickly meet a ton of very like-minded people in very similar situations which really helps. And there is a very real support network out there (especially between women for some reason) in the creative world / working mums / independent women. 65
