Welcome

to the June issue of HIGH IN STYLE!

ECLECTIC VIBES Before I started working on this issue I didn't realise how text heavy, in my terms, it's going to turn out. You know by now that our magazine is about a beautiful visual experience that hopefully is inspiring enough for you get up and take action. I strongly believe that we need to test our abilities so we can learn about ourselves and find purpose in life. This issue, with its eclectic mix of styles, ideas and interviews, really needed the text content to put this message across in the best possible way. And so I encourage you to set aside 5-10 mins of your day to really get into our interviews and articles because there is so much good to take away. It gives me so much pleasure to meet and feature like-minded and highly creative individuals who found that purpose and who are now living life to the fullest while helping others too. I'm sure you will enjoy reading it! MIX IT UP: This living room is a perfect example of how to balance an eclectic mix of furniture, art and accessories. All highly individual yet they help to create a strong cohesive scheme.

Eclectic Edwardian text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Vanessa Valentine

When I came across the living room of a portraiture photographer, Vanessa Valentine, on Instagram I had to find out more. I was immediately drawn to her style and I could see Vanessa's creative personality coming through in each corner of her home. They moved into this North London ground floor 2 bedroom Edwardian conversion last September after many months of renovating the property. And the result? A truly eclectic mix of modern, vintage and diy elements that create comfortable yet stylish and very unique home for its owners.

9

10

Previous page and top: Kitchens can be sometimes very impersonal and almost showroom like. Vanessa took her kitchen to another level by introducing unexpected accessories, art and lighting that make it highly individual.

CAT IN THE WALL: Wonder what this cat head is? Instead of a door cat flap, Vanessa had a cat's head cut out in her laundry door so her cat, Jasper, could access his litter tray. Genius!!

11

CREATIVE THINKING: A squirrel on a kitchen wall used as a hanging tool for an industrial bulb light? Why not? 12

Above: Vanessa's bedroom isn't big but she managed to use her space wisely and maximised what she had available. Instead of chunky furniture or bookshelves she created a built-in shelf for her books.

Designer’s Tip “Don't be afraid to express your personality through unusual pieces such as art, accessories, furniture and lighting. Always go by instinct and find pieces that reflect your life experiences and style the most. If you notice Vanessa's home isn't crazily colourful. What she's done is she created a neutral backdrop that serves as a perfect canvas for colourful elements that she brought in through art, accessories and lighting. ”

Modern Moroccan text by Karolina Barnes, images kindly provided by Tiyana Marie White

They say that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. But how do you inject your personality and colour into your home based around simplicity? We talked to the interior designer, Tiyana Marie White from Simplicit Interiors, who is behind designing such space. Enter this modern living room makeover with a subtle hint of Moroccan flavour.

15

1. WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT FOR THIS MAKEOVER? When my client sought my assistance with furnishing her condo, she asked for calm, relaxing space that blended Moroccan and modern elements. What was interesting, I found, was that the more I worked with her, the more she revealed a preference for modern pieces over Moroccan. In light of this, I decided to source mostly modern furnishings for the living room and relied on accessories, including the rug, to bring in some of that Moroccan flavour she was after.

“We decided to source mostly modern furnishings and relied on accessories, such as the rug, to bring in some of that Moroccan flavour.

16

17

2. HOW IMPORTANT WERE COLOURS AND ART IN THE DESIGN? Colour and art were very important in this project! Since my client wanted a serene space (she didn't care for a lot of colour) that incorporated two very bold pieces of abstract art she already owned, I kept everything else neutral so that nothing would compete against each other. The result, I think, was a very calming, understated space with tones reminiscent of a beach.

“Apart from the bold abstract art I kept everything else neutral so that nothing would compete against each other.

18

3. WHAT ARE YOUR BEST TIPS ON USING COLOURS AND EXPRESSING INDIVIDUALITY IN INTERIORS? There is a psychology to how colours can make us feel, yet every colour can hold a different meaning for each of us. That's why I think it's important to determine early on in a project how you want to feel when you walk into the space you are working on and select your colours and finishes accordingly. It's also important to choose versions of colours that naturally appeal to you--which can not only help narrow down the selection process but bring individual flavour to your project, as well. So say, for example, you'd like to use a certain colour on the wall but are afraid to try anything that's too bold. Then consider a tinted, shaded or otherwise muted version that is softer and less vibrant instead. Alternatively, you could stick to a neutral wall colour and bring in a few accessories with the colour you want incorporated into your space. WILL'S SCANDI MEETS MID-CENTURY DINING NOOK

“The exciting reality of decorating is that your home is unique." 20

Dream Decor text by Karolina Barnes, photography by Andrew Boyd

I believe that creating your dream home gives you the opportunity to discover who you are. It's a journey which leads you to the outcome of happiness and joy your home will give you back. I talked to Will Taylor, the interior design author and founder of one of the world's best known design blog Bright Bazaar, about his approach to home decorating and his new book, Dream Decor: Styling a cool, creative and comfortable home, wherever you live.

WILL'S COLOURFUL BEDROOM

21

PATTERN ON PATTERN

1. YOUR FIRST BOOK, BRIGHT BAZAAR: EMBRACING COLOUR FOR MAKE-YOU-SMILE STYLE, PUTS EMPHASIS ON USING COLOUR, BEING BRAVE WITH COLOUR AND THE POWER OF COLOUR AS A CONFIDENCE BOOSTER. IS YOUR SECOND BOOK, DREAM DÉCOR, A NATURAL NEXT STEP FROM THAT? Yes, definitely. I wanted to write a book that looked at all decorating elements that help to create a home of our dreams. Colour is definitely one of them but there are other key ingredients that can simplify the process of decorating. These are pattern, texture, furniture, lighting and accessories. Looking at them as a source of inspiration or starting point makes decorating little bit easier. It may be a flea market find, a souvenir from travels or holidays, or favourite piece of art. Whatever it is, you can build the space around it.

22

2. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MESSAGE OF THIS BOOK? The biggest message of this book is wherever you live you can create a home which is highly personal to you. Don’t let the physicality or location of your current home deter you. Whatever your style is you can inject that into your space. It might be through small elements such as soft furnishings, lighting or accessories. For example, if you like the look of the Industrial style tall iron cabinet but haven’t got a space for it, you can introduce the look via a small side table or a lamp instead. In the book there is an apartment in Paris (below) that doesn’t look anything like what you would expect from a typical Parisian interior that would reflect its romantic and grandeur perception of style. It reminded me more of a cool industrial space found in Brooklyn in New York or Shoreditch in London. The owners focused more on telling their story even in a small open plan urban living space.

“Understanding the key elements of decor will give you the confidence to mix up the ingredients of a room and to create a stylish space that is personal to you.” PETITE PARISIENNE

23

3. WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON STYLE AND TRENDS IN INTERIORS? I see style as something which is highly personal. There is no right or wrong as long as it makes you feel happy. On the other hand, I see trends as an inspiration but I’m not guided by them. There is absolutely no pressure to have them in your home unless they fit well into your style. It’s more important to find decorating objects that you love, and that speak to you, regardless whether they are the latest musthave or not.

4. WHAT MAKES YOUR BOOKS DIFFERENT IS THAT THEY FEATURE HOMES THAT ARE VERY REAL, PERSONAL AND COMFORTABLE. IS THAT SOMETHING THAT IS CLOSE TO YOU HEART? Yes. To me, decorating isn’t about size or money. It should be accessible and approachable. You can create a home that makes you happy on every budget. This book hopefully gives you the guidance, knowledge and tools that you can take and apply.

COLOURFUL COUNTRY BEDROOM

Will's Top Tips

1. 2. 3.

When it comes to choosing colours the easiest thing to do is to take a long look around you and find the colour that inspires you the most. Introducing pattern into a room (as above) can pay both design and personal dividends for a long time. Study how pattern is designed for inspiration. The soul of a space often lies in texture. Texture is such an important design element which helps you to tell your story. Layering texture adds dimension and interest to a room.

The art of luxecycling

28

shop we love

Muck N Brass text by Anouska Lancaster, photography and graphics by Karolina Barnes, image by Russel Sach

Most of us will have heard of ‘up-cycling’ which has been the buzz word circulating for the last few years. In fact, so much so, that I was invited to present a feature on upcycling for ITV’s Alan Titchmarsh Show back in 2014. But, ‘luxecycling’ was a concept I’ve never really heard of until now. In basic terms luxecycling is a process whereby vast value is added to an unwanted or preloved piece by transforming and reinventing it into something of great beauty; and of a much higher quality. More often than not, luxecycling will take the given item to a level so superior to what is was previously, that it becomes unrecognisable. Luxecycling is the hottest new craze; it is the ultimate in reuse; and a whole new industry sector is shaping around it. As much as I enjoy upcycling for clients, it’s not something that I generally do for myself as it’s never had the capacity to really capsulate my personal style. Or, can it when executed the right way? I met professional luxecycler Zoe Pocock, creator and owner of Muck N Brass, in her beautiful boutique to give me more insight.

“Luxecycling is about transforming a preloved piece of furniture into something of great beauty.” 29

THE STYLE To some, upcycling can be associated with shabby chic. But Zoe told me that the shabby chic look was hugely limiting and she personally avoids the "distressed French vibe" at all costs. "I am all for chic but not for shabby. I don’t mind if it comes from a skip, but I don’t want it to look as though it needs to go back in one when I’ve finished with it." It’s the finish and the materials that make the difference when trying to obtain the stylised luxury look. Zoe explained that " To avoid the French look, steer clear from chalk paint as it impossible to obtain a sleek or contemporary finish". The finish of a luxecycled piece has to be sharp and clean and the attention to detail is vital. After spending the afternoon with Zoe, it was clear to see that her passion and dedication to perfection is the key to her success. "I concentrate on the finishes, the details and the design. If I am not happy with something then I’ll start again until I am 100% happy with it." I believe it’s this new, modern approach of stylised detail and perfection that separates luxecycling from upcycling. QUALITY Repurposing and reconditioning the ‘old and odd’ does need a practised eye. However, this is a skill that you will quickly pick up if you are not already a "seasoned junker". My biggest piece of advice would be to go with your instinct – if you are really drawn to a piece then it’s meant to be. Don’t be put off by the fact that nobody else wants it; luxecycling is a valve of personal expression. It’s your unique taste; and your individual style; that will allow you to create an item into your own masterpiece. Quality is key when it comes to luxecycling. The finished product has to be fully operational and have a purpose, as well as look beautiful. Zoe gave me some great advice when looking for suitable furniture; "Look for wooden runners on drawers and metal hinges on doors. Open and close them all. Check the integrity of all the joints and the legs, unless you are willing to do some carpentry repairs before the luxecycle."

30

31

LONGEVITY Today we sadly live with the mentality of "out with the old, in with the new". It is this new concept of disposable living which is plaguing our society. I personally believe that with today’s economic pressures, longevity is key; and that is why luxecycling is swiftly overtaking mainstream manufacturers in the furniture stakes. Luxecycling is ushering in an entirely new wave of entrepreneurial innovation. People want furniture that not only looks beautiful, but is economic, and most importantly that lasts. The best way of ensuring longevity is to choose pieces that have been made well and are not in need of a huge amount of repair. It is essential that the frame and structure are primarily sound so that the piece can be brought to life through the regeneration process. Zoe told me that during the luxecycling process, she is always as sympathetic as possible to the original; so that its character and charm can be visible in the end result. She explains "It also gives more scope for the piece of furniture to be upcycled again in the future, should a client wish to change their design scheme." For me, it is this idea of not only current regeneration, but future remodelling that makes luxecycling so exciting and forward thinking.

32

“Collect things you love, create pieces authentic to you, and have your house become your story.” ANOUSKA LANCASTER

PERSONALITY My mantra when designing homes for people is always to "express yourself " through your interior. Choose items that make you smile, showcase your passions, express your sense of humour and reflect your individuality. As much as I understand the disposable "ikea culture", it saddens me that so many people simply tick the flat packed box because they feel it’s easy, economic or on trend. Luxecycling is an innovative and economic alternative to the oversubscribed flat packed culture. It opens exciting and adventurous opportunities to explore your inner style through remodelling and experimenting with your inner creativity. Filling your home with well made, useful, and beautiful things that have had a previous life will most certainly enrich your home and make it more individual. These unusual and eclectic pieces will have a soul and story, and through you, their story continues and entwines with yours to create a wonderful talking point. What I love about luxecycling, is that it allows you to express yourself in a bespoke, stylish and unique way. A way that is exclusive to you, and you only. A luxecycled piece will grow with you; it has the ability to regenerate and grow into something else as you go through different eras of your life. 33

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Increased awareness of environmental responsibility and a slow economy is forcing us to be more aware of the impact of environmental waste, and therefore opening our eyes to new possibilities around us. Luxecycling is the perfect opportunity for each and every one of us to make a difference to the global epidemic we are faced with. Zoe prides herself on being an ambassador for "eco friendly production" and ensures that this is a major part of her work ethic. "Being eco-friendly is so important. Luxecycling saves new resources to make new furniture, and keeps perfectly viable pieces out of landfill." Nothing is wasted at Muck N Brass. As I venture out into the workshop, an Aladdin’s cave of vintage treasures, I see racks of leftover wallpaper and wrapping paper waiting in the wings for a possible future project. As well as this, Zoe goes out of her way to be eco minded by offering an exchange service, whereby new and previous customers can bring along old and unwanted furniture in exchange for newly luxecycled pieces.

“Beauty can be created in the unexpected.”

Top tips for luxecycling

1. 2. 3. 4.

Car boot sales, charity shops and house clearances are the best places to pick up preloved and unwanted items at good prices. Make sure that the items are good quality and not in need of huge amounts of repair. Ensure that the drawers open, the hinges work, and most importantly that the piece is stable. Go for wooden, glass or metal items and try to avoid items made of cheap materials such as MDF. Preparation is key. Sand down furniture using wire wool or sandpaper before painting or gluing to achieve a smooth finish. To brighten up chrome or metal, try using soap wool pads to bring back the sheen. Zoe emphasises that a face mask is essential during the preparation stages, and again necessary if applying spray paint. Avoid chalk paint. Instead use high quality paints such as water based eggshell which will give the piece a much longer lifespan and a sleeker, more contemporary look. Finish with a coat of varnish for protection.

5.

Be brave and take risks. Don’t be afraid to experiment – enjoy developing your ideas; and if it goes wrong then simply start again.

6.

Take inspiration from all the things you love. Your piece of furniture is your own blank canvas to enable you to express yourself.

7.

Mix materials and finishes for a stylised look. Wallpaper with paint looks great, or follow in Zoe’s footsteps; and use a favourite print to create a bespoke piece which resonates with you.

SUMMER SALE The Essentials Guide words and images by Flavia Young

Unsurprisingly I guess, but I beg to differ from fashion lovers who believe that sales time is the time to indulge in those more out there, less mainstream pieces you have been coveting all season but couldn’t find the heart (or logic) to buy – given its likely high cost per wear ratio. Sadly, such items only become less covetable by the day once they hit the sale racks, because by now, that rush one feels when seeing an out of the ordinary fashion piece for the first time, has been replaced by “oh no, not another blogger wearing it or another magazine feature on the same item again!" Clue: just about any Chloe summer piece. I strongly believe – and stick to this when planning my shopping list, that sales time is the perfect time to pick up those pieces that would already have worked very hard in my wardrobe and now will work double hard. Forget handbags and jeans, as a general rule, if they are in the sales, they are too trend orientated and therefore not hard working enough. 45

As I live in Europe, my wishlist usually consists of:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

fine cashmere sweaters in neutrals with touches of bold colours. striped tops in traditional navy/white as well as bold colours. cropped jackets in a timeless print or neutral colours. blazers in neutral colours. a cashmere coat in camel, grey or dust pink. a few day dresses, with sleeves if your arms are not toned. an evening gown, ditto above. designer hats (stocking up on guilt free Mason Michel, yes please!). suede mid heel pumps in all colours of the rainbow, from neutrals to the must have reds, by Saint Laurent or Gianvito Rossi, which are the most comfortable, no contest.

10. silk blouses. 11. designer swimwear. With all shops in the full sales swing right now, I have one piece of advice save yourself the time and the impulse buys by shopping online – trying all pieces at home and sending what does not make the cut back. Bonus: not having to deal with the sales assistant’s disappointment. Here are some pieces I am betting on right now...

showing your best features text by Karolina Barnes and photography provided by Hunters & Heels

58

Style is about who you are. You need to find it and embrace it by showing your best features. We talked to Lauren Shepherd, a beauty expert and mum, from Hunters & Heels lifestyle blog about her take on style. Plus she shares her tips on make-up for busy mamas. 1. Style is about finding your own way of “being. How did you find yours? Any tips? I think I'm still finding my style, perhaps it's a journey rather than a destination. I absolutely agree though, style is about being who you are, the best version of you. For me, that's about celebrating other women, allowing yourself to be inspired, but always remaining true to yourself. Be comfortable in your own skin and celebrate what's right with you. I think that's true for hair and make-up as well as clothing. Concentrate on accentuating your best features rather than spending time trying to change things you don't like. Just be who you are.

59

2. What are the absolute 3 essential beauty products which you can’t live without at the moment? Ooooofff!!! Just 3? Bobbi Brown Extra Eye Repair Cream. Hands down, my favourite product. This eye cream is super rich and luxurious. It works to reduce puffiness, dehydration and dark circles over time and INSTANTLY!! Even better, it’s not too rich for use under makeup. There are lighter options, like 'hydrating eye cream' which many people prefer under concealer, but for me, this is THE ONE!! – I also need to add that Colin, my husband, wouldn’t go a morning without using this either! I'm totally addicted to Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base . I’ve used this product for years (except when I was pregnant and my skin became super dry). It’s lightweight, but conditioning and primes the skin for make-up like no other moisturiser I’ve tried. As if all that’s not enough…it smells AMAZING…like a sweet, citrusy cake…Delish! Finally, Bobbi Brown OMG Wow Lashes Mascara. It's the blackest black. That sounds obvious but when you compare, so many mascaras just aren't dark enough once dry. The brush is huge, and it really does only take one coat for big curly eye-opening lashes!

60

“ This Soothing Cleansing Oil is part of my skincare routine.”

3. What are your tips on good skincare routine that is suitable for busy mums? Now, I’m pretty tired and short of time these days, but you will NEVER find face wipes in my bathroom. Yes, they might be better than nothing, but they are certainly no substitute for a good skincare routine. There are loads of great products out there that work brilliantly and are still perfect for the time-poor. A Soothing Cleansing Oil is an indulgent but really quick, simple way to ensure your skin is perfectly clean yet still hydrated and comfortable. For anyone who hasn’t used one, it really is just a case of massaging a few pumps of oil all over a dry face with dry hands and splashing off. No need for a separate eye make-up remover, cotton pads etc…. Bobbi Brown Soothing cleansing oil, is also suitable for all skin types. When I have time I then use a gentle Hydrating Face tonic. Something to ensure my skin is perfectly clean and ready for the next step. I avoid anything really astringent as this has made my skin burn and feel irritated. I just love Bobbi Brown Hydrating face tonic, it contains lavender, chamomile and cucumber, really soothing and smells amazing! Next it's the Extra Eye Repair Cream and Vitamin Enriched Face Base I've mentioned above. If you want to give your skin a real boost, nothing compares to a good exfoliator. Not only will your skin look much fresher and smoother, you'll remove the dead skin so all your lovely products will be applied to fresh new skin, allowing you the maximum benefit. 61

4. What steps do you take for your “every day make up” routine? My every day make-up literally just takes 8 mins. I've even timed myself with a stop watch for the purpose of this guide. This time spent in the morning really does make a huge difference to how I look and feel so it's really worth the time.

1. CC Cream : 10 seconds To boost the ‘glow’, and combat my sallow complexion, I use a tiny blob of CC (colour correcting) cream underneath my foundation. CC creams are quite a modern take on those old fashioned green correcting creams of the 1980’s. The colours are a lot more subtle now and the formulas are light and hydrating. Bobbi Brown CC cream in Blushed Nude also contains SPF 35. I just use my finger and sweep across my cheek bones, forehead, nose and chin prior to any other make up.

2. Corrector/Concealer : 1 minute I always apply my under eye concealer before foundation. It’s incredible the difference it makes, and how much less of everything else you feel you need once you’ve eliminated under-eye darkness. At Bobbi Brown, we call these products “the secret of the universe”. They are AMAZING!! Since its launch, I’ve been using the newer version of BB Corrector/Concealer, but the original is pretty amazing too. Have you ever used a concealer and still seen the greenish shadow still coming through? That’s because the corrector is the most important step. They come in either Bisque (pink – neutralises blue tones) or Peach (neutralises purple tones) so are not suitable worn alone as they don’t blend with your skin. The corrector applied first neutralises the darkness, you then cover this with concealer to make it look more like skin. Your under-eye concealer needs to be ever-so-slightly lighter than your foundation to give you that bright, fresh look under the eyes.

62

3. Foundation: 60 seconds Unfortunately, I’m not blessed with skin clear enough for just a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. I do like coverage, but I like it light and radiant, that’s why I’m soooo thankful for Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation. This product only launched last year, so it’s pretty new, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! Never before have I had compliments about my skin, but almost as soon as I started using this foundation, people commented on my ‘glow’…whoop!!! The SPF is high at 40, and it contains all the same gorgeous skin-benefiting ingredients as the serum I’ve mentioned above. In my opinion, it’s really worth investing in a few great Brushes. I find I use LOADS less foundation with the brush and get more coverage. Our fingers are quite warm and waxy in comparison so work the product into the skin more. I apply a pea-sized amount of foundation to the back of my hand, dip the brush in (a little at a time) and blend over my face in circular movements, starting with the areas that need the most coverage (my nose and mouth). If your foundation is the perfect shade, you won’t need a full face either so you can just apply it where you need it. I love the Intensive skin serum corrector and concealer because the coverage is just as good as the original, but they are beyond weightless. They are a kind of hybrid product with skincare benefits too. I just apply a thin layer directly to my under-eye area, making sure to cover all the darkness, including the lash line and inner corner of my eyes. Unlike the original creamy concealer, I find its best not to blend this formula with my fingers, I use the Full Coverage Face and touch up brush.

63

“ To keep the foundation in place, I use a small amount of Pressed Powder.” 4. Powder : 20 seconds I have quite an oily t-zone, and whilst I like my skin to look glowy, I don’t want it to be wet-looking. I use a really small amount of Pressed Powder, literally just on my nose and forehead to take away the shine and keep the foundation in place. If I use powder all-over, it totally changes the look of the make-up. I use Pale Yellow which is translucent and therefore works with/without a tan and doesn’t add any more coverage.

5. Bronzer : 30 seconds I use bronzer all through the year, not just in the summer, as I don’t use it to make me look tanned. Firstly the skin on my face is lacking warmth in comparison to the skin on my body. Perhaps that’s due to wearing SPF everyday for the last 15years, or maybe I’m just a wee bit pasty?! Either way, I need to blend my face into the rest of my body so I do this with bronzer not foundation. Secondly, even though it’s an additional product, it makes my skin look more natural. When you use foundation to get rid of any warmth in the skin, so it can look quite stark, bronzer puts this warmth back. When choosing bronzer, go for one that’s the colour you would naturally tan so it looks natural. You can check this by holding it next to your chest. I’m a ‘Medium’, which doesn’t have too much gold and yellow. I use a Bronzer Brush to apply the product where the sun naturally hits the skin (top of forehead, top of cheekbones etc…). It’s best to apply bronzer with your arms/chest exposed so you can stop when your colour blends in and looks natural.

64

6. Blush: 30 seconds So many people don’t wear blusher, thinking bronzer is to be used “instead of ”. I wouldn’t leave the house without it. Bronzer warms your skin, but it’s the blusher that perks you up and makes you look fresh and healthy. Day-to-day, I just use one blush, and it’s a gorgeous bright pop of colour, right on the apples of my cheeks (smile, and they’ll pop out). I either use a powder or creamy formula, depending on how my skin is, but almost always in Pale Pink. When you see the bright, Barbie-pink colour, you’ll be frightened, but it’s so gorgeous and natural when it’s used correctly.

7. Lip Colour : 30 seconds Lipstick is so much fun, it’s a really quick and easy way to change your look and instantly makes a tired mama feel glamorous. My fave shade right now is Rich Lip Colour in Guava, with a slick of White Brightening gloss over the top. I don’t feel I need lip liner, so I don’t use it everyday, only when I’m wearing a red lip.

65

8. Brows: 1 minute Eyebrows are so easy to get wrong which can scare people into thinking its best not to use anything to define them at all. My brows are thick and dark but I made the terrible mistake in my teens of over-plucking my brows, and now they don’t grow properly. I really wish I hadn’t, so I had a more full and natural shape to work with. Regardless of what you’re working with, a good brow frames your face and can really lift and brighten the eye area. It’s quite difficult to choose the correct shade, so it’s best to get advice from a trained artist. A lot of brown shades (even ones specifically designed for brows) have a red undertone which doesn’t suit a lot of people. Depending on how much hair you have, the thickness, colour, shape…etc, it might be that you just need a little brow shaper, or some brow pencil. I like to use an eye shadow with an eye-definer brush, as this gives definition, but really softly. I start by applying the shadow where I need it most, and then blend through the brow whatever is left on the brush.

66

9. Eye Shadow: 20 seconds For this really fast, weekend make-up I skip eyeshadow and eye-liner. Instead, I use quite a large soft Eye Sweep Brush to dust a thin layer of matt Ivory Eyeshadow over my entire lid and under my brow. If I was doing a full eye make-up I would still use this as my base. The shadow absorbs any oil on the lid so stops my mascara smudging. It also brightens the skin and lifts any shadow, giving the appearance of brighter eyes.

10. Eye-Opening-Mascara: 1 minute Finally, it’s lashes. Like many many women, I think a good mascara is a real ‘must have’. There are sooooo many great ones out there, so it’s a task finding one that suits you perfectly. Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara is AMAZING!! A jumbo brush and a rich carbon-black formula thickens and curls lashes instantly. You don’t even need a lash curler. It’s the best for opening up and lifting tired eyes. That’s it for the make-up. Eight minutes. Done.

how to wear summer brights ...without looking like an 80s throwback words and photography by Nicola

There's nothing like injecting a pop of colour into our beauty routine to put us in the mood for summer! We all know how good it feels to add cheery brights to an all-black wardrobe (however reluctantly at first) and the same rules apply to our face. But how to achieve this without looking like you're channelling Cyndi Lauper?

69

I prefer to keep things subtle by restricting colour to one or two elements of a look. Nails are a great starting point to extend your palette and bold colours look especially good on tanned toes - Barry M Damson - a Mediterranean cobalt blue is an all time favourite of mine. I'm also loving Nails Inc Charlotte Villas - juicy orange and Portabello Terrace - sky blue.

I love to add a little va va voom to Summer lips; paired with tinted moisturiser, a slick of bronzer and mascara and I'm good to go. Sheer formulas are great for the colour shy, such as Bobbi Brown Sheer Lip Colour in Peach Sorbet or Burt Bees Rose Lip Balm. I've fallen hard for the lipsticks from Dolce & Gabbana's Summer in Italy collection in Cyclamen and Venere. The creamy formula wears beautifully and that weighty gold packaging has all the glamour.

A vivid blush adds life to deeper skin tones and once again Dolce & Gabbana come through with the striking Orange Luminous Cheek Colour. The Balm Instain in Lace is a longwearing hot pink that wears well on summer skin. I like to pair bronzer with a little flush of colour on the apples of my cheeks and Givenchy Le Prisme in Lune RosĂŠe has become a coral pink staple - just enough pigment without looking OTT. For eyes, I prefer to keep things subtle with liner in a deep metallic navy or khaki green. Coloured mascaras are everywhere this season and can be worn alone or added to tips over your regular shade for an is she or isn't she vibe. If you're unsure about dabbling in colour, try experimenting with more affordable options such as Model's Own Sweet Dreams eye shadow palette, Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipsticks or Barry M nail polishes. Most importantly, have fun with it!

tried & tested

REN

words and photography by Karla Cihak

Finally I found it. I think. After months of testing various skincare products, which are well documented over the past issues of High In Style, I got my hands on REN. And I think there's no turning back now for me. This British skincare brand offers products for every skin type. They use only 100% plant and mineral derived actives and none of its products contain synthetic ingredients that can be so unfriendly to the skin. Lately my skin got extremely dry. And even though drinking plenty of water is supposed to be highly beneficial, having extra help from REN is a bonus. So I've been testing 3 products from their anti-aging range to put my skin in order. Bio-retinoid cream: I absolutely love the texture and smell of this cream. It's very light in consistency and very easy to apply over my face, neck and decolletĂŠ. It is nourishing but hydrating at the same time. I use it every morning after prepping my skin. Bio-retinoid firm and lift eye-cream: The fight with wrinkles around my eyes is never ending. But I found little bit of magic in the bottle that helps me with the battle. Over the past month I have noticed a small improvement in fine wrinkle reduction and the skin around my eyes feels firmer and smoother. Bio-retinoid concentrate oil: Talking about magic, this oil absolutely tops it for me. Boosted with vitamin A, pro vitamin A and retinoid the oil leaves my skin smooth and much firmer than ever before. I only use 5 drops per application which I warm in the palm of my hands and pat it over my face and neck. Afterwards I apply the bio-retinoid cream. Perfect combo!

rovinj words and photography by Karla Cihak

When we need a quick break from work around this time of the year Istria is one of our favourite destinations. This year we visited Rovinj which is a small fishing port on the west coast of Istria in Croatia. The coastline around this region is mostly dotted with natural rocky or pebble beaches with picture-postcard views.

stay Hotel Lone We stayed in the 5 star resort of the boutique hotel Lone. This design focused hotel is decorated to a high standard with a contemporary and luxurious feel. The rooms are tastefully designed with minimalistic and clean approach for maximum relaxation. I also visited their spa and fitness facilities and really enjoyed the body treatments they offer. Using only locally sourced products, it was nice to learn more about the beauty and the way of life in this part of the world.

77

do Visit the harbour The centre of Rovinj is based around its harbour. Historically this part of Croatia belonged to Italy after all Venice is not far away, some centuries ago which can be seen in the town's architecture. Colourful houses with typical wooden shutters create a beautiful atmosphere and give you this southern European vibe.

78

eat Even though the hotel provides various cuisines and a good local culinary experience, we found that venturing out and dining outside the resort, in the town centre, was equally enjoyable. So be adventurous and try different restaurants that this town offers.

READY IN 10 MIN

10 minute honey & chilli prawn zoodles words and photography by Jemma Andrew-Adiamah

A fresh and nutritious dinner ready in 10-minutes with sweet honey balanced with a hint of fiery chilli and served with zoodles – it’s quicker than ordering a takeaway. Made with really simple ingredients, but packed full of flavour! Instead of noodles, this recipe uses courgette noodles or as I like to call them zoodles, which means there’s an extra portion of vegetables and it feels less heavy on your stomach compared to something like egg noodles. They’re one of my favourite low carb substitutes if I’m not wanting a heavy meal for dinner and they are great at soaking up sauce and flavours. If you don’t have a spiraliser you can simply use a speed peeler to make pretty ribbons instead.

ingredients 1 tbsp coconut oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 thumb size piece of ginger, grated 2 tbsp honey 2 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 red chilli, sliced (deseed if preferred)

2 cups Iceland jumbo prawns 2 cups Iceland baby corn and sugar snap peas 1 cup Iceland quick cook sliced mixed peppers 2 courgettes, spiralised

method Heat the coconut oil in a large pan or wok. Pour in the frozen baby corn and sugar snap peas and stir in the ginger, garlic and red chilli and cook for 3 minutes. Add in the peppers, prawns, honey, soy sauce and cook for a further 5 minutes. Next add the zoodles into the pan and mix through so everything is evenly distributed. Cook for a further 2 minutes, making sure the prawns are cooked through. Enjoy!

“open up & inspire

Marcella Renna text by Karolina Barnes, photography provided by Marcella Renna

I talked to Marcella Renna, the creative mind behind an Italian lifestyle brand of the same name, about her dramatic career change from being a lawyer to creating a life and business for herself. She's sharing with me her knowledge and wisdom, she found on her way to becoming a happier person, from which we all can learn.

82

1. How did you get to where you are now? After a short career as a lawyer I realised that I was a circle in a square world and I wasn't cut at all for formalities, suits and ethical compromises of this kind of world. I wanted to get out but I didn't how, where to start or what to do. I was always passionate about images and imagination so I moved from my small town in southern Italy to Milan to study Communications and Digital Design at IED (European Institute of Design) and A.F.O.L achieving a MA in both subjects. That led me to work in the fashion and graphic industries until my "encounter" with ceramics. While assisting an Italian artist on his collection I discovered the fantastic, dusty and colourful world of ceramics. I committed myself to learning as a much as possible from other artisans such as Puzzo's family in Milan and continued to learn from Massimo Gentili and the fantastic friends and artists who work at his magical ceramic studio in Tuscany. I then found myself living in one of the most exciting places in the world, London, where I worked for 3 years in Pert Weigl's artist shared studio. After my return to Italy, I set up my own studio where I work mostly on my graphic ceramic collection of jewels and objects that mix together my graphic background and clay.

2. What was the trigger for you to change the direction of your career and stepping away from the world of law? There were two big reasons that made me to change the direction of my career path. Firstly, I didn't like the ethical compromise behind the lawyer career. I've always been very naive and thought I could save the world from evil. When I realised that somebody guilty can get away with minimum penalty was part of the job, I felt I'd have had many conscience problems along the way. Having said that, I still would have liked to defend human rights in a positive way. Secondly, I felt I couldn't express myself with words as well as with images.

83

3. What was the most challenging thing that you had to learn while setting up your business? Definitely I had to learn to work alone. I love sharing knowledge, experiences with other people, simply speaking of things to clarify my thoughts. I set up my business all by myself since I couldn't afford to pay a manager, a consultant or any employee. I have many suppliers of course but all the decisions have to be made by me. This is very hard; you never know if you're doing it right until the market answers.

4. Where do you get inspiration from - any books/personalities/mentors? I’m kind of like a sponge; I love seeing things, natural things and things made by other people, designers, artists, artisans, illustrators. I absorb all I see and reshuffle it. For sure I’ve been influenced by Japanese artists Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama. Their work is meaningful and playful at the same time, and I like how they contributed to fashion. I’ve been influenced by Swedish design too. I love how they use clean lines, simple shapes and thick, full colours. I also have a ceramic hero, Katharine Morling. I use very much black and white so I was wowed by her porcelain sculptures that look like black and white 3d drawings and by the fact we both love butterflies.

“Do whatever makes you feel better. The right choice is the one that makes you feel happy.” 5. What would be your advice to anyone who wants to change career and follow passion? Do whatever makes you feel better. The right choice is the one that makes you feel happy. You have just one life and you don't want to live it feeling miserable. Don't think it's going to be easy and don't think your first try would be the right one and the only try you get. Keep trying till you succeed in feeling happy...at least most of the days...smiling all the time causes wrinkles of happiness...:-)!
