Step inside this family home designed by Jordan and Russell aka 2 Lovely Gays. They helped to transform a long term rented property in London by making the interior space functional and beautiful, even with several stipulations. Full of individuality and colour, this home is a perfect example of how to work with restricted blank canvas that is unique yet still interesting to look at and great to be in.

We talked to the owner, artist and interior designer, Rebecca Loftus, to tell us more about her online store, personal style and tips on how to make your home feel more like you.

1. TELL US WHAT THE CONCEPT OF YOUR STORE IS?

Well basically, I wanted to create an affordable option for the high-end eclectic design that we all see in so many popular magazines and high profile homes.

Since the expansion of social media, Pinterest and Instagram in particular, people now have access to thousands of different tips and ideas to style their living spaces. It has made homeowners a lot more confident and adventurous with their own style choices. A few twigs plonked in a vase in the corner next to an Ikea canvas of a cityscape doesn’t cut it anymore, neither does a generic print that everyone and their auntie already has placed on a wall in their living room. People are on the lookout for something little bit different, something that’s not mass-produced and perhaps with a bit of an edge to it and that’s where we fit in.

Our prints and wallpaper are conversation starters. They make a statement. Our quirky yet positive slogan prints have become very popular too, which is great as they really represent what the brand is all about. They serve as little reminders that you can be, do or have anything you want in life, we may sometimes add a bit of tongue and cheek with it, but the message is still the same.

2. DO YOU FOLLOW TRENDS OR HAVE YOU GOT YOUR OWN SIGNATURE STYLE FOR THE STORE IN TERMS OF COLOURS AND PATTERN?

I think naturally, when anybody sees a new trend emerging, whether we realise it or not, we pick out what we love about it and see how we can emulate it to please our own aesthetic taste, whether it be a certain colour or pattern, so on some level I think most brands do.

I think a brand can still have its own signature style whilst at the same time being at the forefront of current trends and colours. I make sure everything we put out is cool, contemporary, eclectic and fresh, with a twist. At just over a year old were still very much in our infancy as a brand so at the moment were just continuously innovating whilst listening to what our customers are asking for; or in some cases showing them things they didn’t even realise they needed, which is always pretty cool.

3. WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR PRODUCT / DESIGN YOU SEE?

We have a few but every week I can guarantee I will see Penelope the flamingo print, one of the neon prints, and our leopard print wallpaper in our shopping cart.

We have so much more to come; my brain is constantly on overtime brainstorming new ideas and concepts. We will be introducing stationary and phone cases later on in the year too, which will take us from strictly home décor to a home and lifestyle brand. That’s definitely how I see the brand evolving.

LARGE-SCALE ARTWORK: This has and always will be my number one response to anyone who asks me for tips on how to style their home. Large-scale art instantly looks like you know what you’re talking about in the style and interiors game. The right piece of art can instantly pull a room together whilst giving it a unique, stylish and polished finish.

LAYERING AND TEXTURES: If you’re not looking to add lots of colours to a room, focusing on the layering of different textures and fabrics can really take a space from bland and one-dimensional to the ultimate wow factor. Think sheepskin throws, mixed with linen and velvet cushions, placed on a soft leather sofa next to a white lacquered coffee table.

WALLPAPER YOUR CEILING: Sounds a bit crazy I know, but if you’re not adventurous enough to paste a captivating wallpaper print on your walls, why not try the ceiling instead? This is becoming increasingly popular nowadays; it instantly lifts a room and creates a fresh and unique finish. The monochrome look works really well with this, imagine black and white striped wallpaper on your ceiling next to a Farrow & Ball Strong White on the walls.

BRING NATURE INSIDE: I’m a strong believer of adding nature into every room we create. There is something so calming and tranquil about having flowers and foliage placed around your living space. My absolute favourite indoor house plant would have to be the fiddle leaf fig tree; you pretty much can’t go wrong with this one. Their tall and architectural structure pretty much style a room in themselves. When it comes to flowers, you can’t beat white orchids, calla lilies, gladiolus and hydrangeas.

LIGHTING IS KEY: Lighting plays such an integral role in any interior layout. Great lighting sets the tone and mood to a room.

There are three types of lighting to consider when you begin to style any room, general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.

Keep these in mind when you decide to design your next space.

Style is an instant language. It’s about who we are. We talked to Joanna, the founder of Create Curate Styling, about the importance of style and confidence. Her consultancy specialises in a new breed of Bespoke Personal Styling Services and Shopping Experiences for private clients in the UK and beyond.

1. How do you define style?

Style is instant language and is as characteristic of someone as their handwriting, and that makes for one powerful medium of expression. It is the synergy of our character, our taste, our view of the world and aesthetic interpretations and those elements form our individuality that will reflect in everything but the mirror. Style has to do with clothing but also a lot to do with personal development; -the decisions we make when we get dressed in the morning are informed by our state of mind, so it is safe to say, style on the outside is a reflection of our self-regard on the inside.

2. What is the best way of finding personal style that reflects one’s personality while “feeling good and comfortable?

Style is only possible from a place of self-acceptance. Denying your body is the enemy to creating the look you want. You have to be smart about it, acknowledge your flaws, take mental notes on the parts you like and want to show off and realise confidence does not come from body parts, it is something you can train your mind to master. So the idea of looking away from the mirror, that I spoke of earlier, is very important because it is where you’ll find yourself and your inspiration in the things you love and everything you surround yourself with.

This approach to style opens up an endless resource of ideas when it comes to dressing and when working with someone on incorporating their individual interests in a look, we achieve symbiosis because they will radiate their inner aspirations and look like they are completely aligned with their perception of self.

3. How do you view trends in fashion?

Fashion in an industry like any other and it has to sell trends but trends in fashion are the relation we have with the external while style is all about the inner self. Knowing yourself is your secret weapon and is what gives you the upper hand when choosing what to buy into. Surely, trends can be something to play with, interpret in your own language of style, repackage, repurpose, but I always advise to look beyond fads because the very idea behind trends and must-haves is that they are there to bridge a gap between where you are and where you want to be. Your own style journey is much more valuable and exciting than fleeting infatuation with what the current ‘it-item’ may be.

4. What are your tips for reinventing wardrobe?

Go on a shopping trip in your own wardrobe! Think of it as your own backstage, or as a really aesthetically pleasing boutique you perhaps like to go or have visited, then try to remember what the environment made you feel, what the shelves and the rails looked like and how pieces intrigued you.

Environment is very important because the organisation of your wardrobe can not only bring you piece of mind but from there, eliminate fear of trying new things! Take the time to ‘live with your clothes’, play some music, light a candle then take out a few pieces that catch your eye and challenge yourself to do something different with them and really think outside the box to bring them out of context. Have you tried an unusual colour scheme that this item can work in, mixing it with a textured piece, layering it?

Mending, remodelling, changing buttons are all allowed. Also, leverage your accessories! They are what can truly breathe new life into that black ‘comfort zone’ jumper we all have! It’s all about editing and re-editing; - If a piece hasn’t done anything for you in over a year, it is time to break up and I suggest donating it!

A well-curated wardrobe is the key to establishing that ‘signature look’ that we all want to be known for and remember less is more; - I am a firm believer in pieces that are well-constructed and complement o what you already love. Keeping this in mind while shopping helps you make more informed and conscious decisions towards what to buy.

5. What are the absolute game-changers when it comes to putting an outfit together at any age?

Working with women has taught me many things about the body and how changes at different stages of our lives can affect our confidence and consequently, style. I don’t abide to rules such as ‘dress for your age’, because if the same thing feels right for someone at 35 as it does for someone at 55, then that is what will translate in the way both these women wear it. Class comes from knowing simple things like how to show skin strategically, when to choose courts over ballet flats etc.

A LOOSELY FITTED WHITE BLOUSE: We all have those days when our belly doesn’t completely agree with us and leaves us feeling conscious of our midriff. A fluid and loosely fitted silk shirt creates a sinuous silhouette and makes you feel put together. The timelessness of the white blouse lies in its versatility, from being able to romanticise sturdy denim to softening a billowing skirt with poise. Ideally, you should have a crisp white one and one in cream for different occasions and easier maintenance.

A COLOURFUL SILK SCARF: Is a truly unseasonal piece that enhances a coat as much as a sheer summer blouse at any age and is light enough to be kept in your handbag for impromptu moments that may call for a quick uplift. Not only that, but you can think of the scarf as your own distinctive canvas. Find one (or start a collection) of pieces that convey your creativity and bring your fantasies to life, play around with unique ways of tying it depending on your mood and what part of the pattern you want to display more of and watch that small and endlessly chic detail bring more versatility in your wardrobe.

A GO-TO LIP COLOUR: My grandmother taught me that there is nothing quite like a signature lip shade for a woman who wants to leave her mark in the world. And by mark I mean everything from being ‘that lady who wears red on her lips when she goes to the supermarket’, to stained napkins and wine glasses, long after she’s left the dinner party. A colour that compliments your skin tone can not only draw attention to the lips on a bad skin (or hair) day, but seamlessly takes a little black dress from work to play and a simple white tee from brunch to drinks.

BLACK PUMP: I will never forget my first encounter with my mother’s Manolo Blahnik BB Pumps during my teenage years. Years later, the single-sole, pointy toes, smart overall feminine architecture of this shoe is ever-so relevant because a black pump in delicate suede or leather, is often the magic glue that holds a look together. I suggest befriending a good cobbler for the (very important) up keeping of your pumps if you decide to invest in a great designer pair. Of course the ballet flat shouldn’t be disregarded because it almost instantly brings its touch of class to boyfriend jeans or midi skirts alike, while indulging you in comfort!

A CLASSIC TIME PIECE: Nothing speaks of class as much as a lady who’s accessory is time itself. The task of finding the right wrist watch can sometimes take years because it requires a certain level of commitment but it will also be your accessory best friend for many more to come because unlike the wear of rings or bracelets, that of a time piece cannot be obstructed by changes in size. Opt for a leather strap that will age beautifully and make it all the more personal!

The bigger the better Over the years I found that to make an impact, which even your friends notice, and to transform your outfit, going big is the way to go. I love my big chunky cuff bracelets, colourful glass bead necklaces and even chandelier earrings. It might feel little bit over the top at first but once you overcome the initial hesitation, it really is a game-changer.

Layering I must admit that I’ve been more and more confident in layering my jewellery collections...and it feels great. I love mixing textures and materials; from pearls and precious stones to metals and even ribbons.

Each will give you slightly different shine and sparkle, which makes your outfit so much more interesting.

Shedding those winter layers fills me with the thrill of renewal that not even

New Year’s day can rival.

Perhaps for a fashion lover, true renewal is only possible if it comes with a fresh new look, great new clothes and a healthier new regime.

Because, if the truth is to be said, the promise of new lighter clothes is a much better incentive to get fit now than it was on the 1st of January - when we still had three months to hide under layers of clothes.

Tips on the best blush for mulas around and how to create well dressed cheeks that look lightly flushed, not flustered.

Blusher is probably my most loved beauty product. It has the biggest impact on my overall look, balances eyes and lips - and can make a half asleep face appear wide awake in seconds. If you’re timid about using blush, don’t give up - there’s one with your name on it and it’s just a matter of finding The One. In general, powder blush works on all skin types while creams or liquids are particularly flattering on normal to dry skin.

Application can make or break a blush... go heavy handed and you’ll come over all Aunt Sally; don’t blend enough and people will think your 3 year old did your makeup.

POWDER Powder blush suits every skin type and is the most popular and foolproof formula, found in most of our makeup bags.

Matte, marbled or shimmery, powder blush dusted high on the cheekbones is a quick and easy step to pull a makeup look together.

A small to medium rounded or angled brush with loose bristles will pick up the right amount of product and help avoid an overdone look. Studio 10’s double ended brush can be used to apply with one end (angled) and soften with the other. Use long, upward swirling strokes in a wide C shape.

CREAM Cream blusher gives a very natural, skin-like effect, as if you’re actually blushing. Using the back of your hand as a palette to warm the product and avoid using too much, pat onto cheeks (don’t rub) with the flat of two fingers and press onto the skin until the edges are seamless. A duo fibre brush (with a mix of long and short hairs) such as Real Techniques Duo Fibre Contour gives a very natural result and is soft enough not to disturb foundation underneath.

Powder can be applied on top if you wish.

LIQUID Liquid blush can seem a little daunting if you’re not familiar with it, but creates a youthful glow that brightens Winter skin and enhances a Summer tan. A duo fibre brush gives the most subtle results and application should be similar to cream blush, though liquid will require less working into the skin.

Quick tips for perfect blush

A colour close to your natural blushing shade will be the most flattering.

Apply blush on cheekbones from directly below your pupil in a gently sweeping upwards curve, softening any harsh edges with small circular movements.

Apply blush when doing your base, then reassess once the rest of your makeup is complete. It’s always easier to go in and add more than to take away.

A neutral shade across the cheekbone with a pop of brighter colour on the apples of cheeks gives a pretty, healthy look.

Less is more...if you’ve overdone it, soften the effect by going over the edges with a little powder or foundation on a separate brush.

WUNDERBROW is the latest hot product competing in the race to get those “on fleek” eyebrows. So here at High in Style we thought we would see what all the fuss was about. I first noticed this product when a video appeared on a social media timeline showing the seemingly simple application of the product with a slanted brush… RESULT: beautiful eyebrows with a light powder effect finish.

So how does it work? The product is available in 4 different shades; black/ brown, brunette, blonde and auburn. The slanted brush is not included with the product (I’ve seen feedback on social media where this was expected after seeing the video online) so it might be worth investing in one of those if you find it more effective but you do get one of those little disposable mascara brushes. You apply the gel to the eyebrows in the direction of the hair growth (I recommend you to remove the surplus product on the applicator before using). You can apply more for a darker look but suggest you layer it to achieve the desired effect. While the product is wet you then take the mascara brush provider and brush your brows up and then shape into place. The product then dries and you are left with, in my opinion, natural looking eyebrows which last for days.

The verdict? I went with the black/brown which is the darkest shade as our tester has dark hair and eyes. I applied using just the application and the mascara brush to give the most “true” result. The product does not dry with a powder effect as it appears on the video. The fibres cling to the hairs of your brows, looking very natural but giving a defined result. I tried to limit contact with the skin to just where there were gaps in hair growth and applied to the hair itself as much as possible to give a natural finish.

harissa spiced lamb & chickpea burgers There is nothing better than tucking into your favourite foods and I love welcoming the weekend with a treat like a pizza, curry or Chinese takeaway. When we buy meals in, they tend to be a treat, guilt-free of course, but they’re not something that I could eat every day and feel great.

I’m hoping that you’re all going to enjoy this recipe as much as I enjoyed creating and eating it. On a mission to bring a healthy version of fast food into the home that is quicker and easier than going out to order and collect it yourself, these burgers are just the thing.

ingredients 450g lamb mince 400g cooked chickpeas 1/2 red onion, diced 3 tbsp harissa paste 1 garlic clove, grated 4tbsp coriander, chopped

method Mash at least half of the chickpeas in a bowl and pour in the other ingredients including the untouched chickpeas.

Stir all the ingredients together and portion and shape into 6 burgers.

Place the burgers on some greaseproof paper and place in the fridge for at least an hour to allow them to firm up.

When ready, using a little oil in a pan cook until golden brown on both sides and cooked through.

Serve as your heart desires with your favourite toppings.

We talked to the CEO of Wunderkid, Denise Troy, about how she came up with the idea of her art business concept and her mission to empower others.

1. How did you get to where you are now?

I’ve always had the creative itch. Whether it be choreographing a music video or illustrating a children’s book, I find all creative outlets to be incredibly cathartic and food for my soul. Most people who know me refer to me as the girl with four pots on the stove because I’m always doing a million things at once. I’ve always operated this way and I find myself more productive when I’m doing many things rather than being singularly focused. While I am passionate about many things, my biggest focus for this year is to learn how to quiet and calm my mind. I have trouble sitting still and finding peacefulness in life’s simplicity and I’m realizing more than ever how important and necessary this is. I launched Wunderkid and had a little girl (Stella Jameson) last year, so 2015 was a big year to put it lightly. I believe my mission in life is to empower others and help individuals discover their true path.

2. Why did you decide to start Wunderkid and what is Wunderkid concept about?

I started Wunderkid because I saw a real gap in the market for meaningful support for young artists and their journey. Wunderkid is a new creative social enterprise that aims to address the rising costs of higher education and the difficult accessibility younger artists seem to endure on their educational journey. Our mission is to empower exceptionally talented young artists locally and internationally by providing a digital platform that allows them to sell their art. With each sale, Wunderkid contributes to the artist’s college tuition fund.

3. Having your daughter and working around baby needs haven’t stopped you from running a business and working for yourself. How did you overcome your fears of whether you can do it, what if you fail and any doubts you had or still do have?

Honestly, it wasn’t really a question for me. I have always been a dreamer and as much as I love my little one, I knew I needed to keep an identity for myself separate from that of the role as mum.

Motherhood is without a doubt the most demanding and intense job I’ve ever had and sometimes I think I’m crazy for trying to do anything more than that. I hope that Stella (my little nugget) will grow up seeing that her mum is fearless when it comes to pursuing her dreams and I hope she learns strength and empowerment.

4. Many women are afraid of loosing the financial security and freedom that comes with starting their own business. How did you work around “battling with insecurity”?

I think the hardest part of starting your own business is the uncertainty. As a type A personality, I love schedules, order and a healthy does of stability. Taking the leap to start a business, you’re pretty much doing away with all of that. I think if you’re passionate enough about your business and really believe in its potential, you dig deep and find some sort of inner knowing that affirms the importance of risking it all. This risk is really beautiful and something to be celebrated. As scary as it sometimes can be, if you return to that inner guide, somehow you weather the hurdles, the insecurities and the self doubt.

5. What would you say to anyone who is unhappy in their job and who is thinking about starting their own business or changing their career path? Have you got any mentors / examples / inspirational resources which might help?

I think the most important thing is to start a business for the right reason…passion. Don’t start a business because you want to make money. That can be a wonderful outcome, but it shouldn’t be the impetus. You have to find something that you would want to do whether or not you made a single dollar. In a nutshell, take money out of the equation entirely. We’ve become a society driven by it and I think for many of us, we’ve lost our way. I believe if we return to listening to our gut and following our inner knowing, we will find ourselves on a more meaningful path. As far as inspirational resources, I love Twyla Tharp’s book “The Creative Habit.” I often turn to it when I find myself in a creative rut and it has real-world exercises that help pull me out of any funk.
