Helping
by Jenny King HANDS relies upon a dedicated team of cheerful volunteers like Buck Trott. A classic Christmas dinner will be served from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. December 25 at the Hudson House at Highlands Country Club. Proceeds will benefit a host of local charities. For reservations or more information, call (828) 526-9419.
T
he much-anticipated Highlands Annual Christmas Dinner will return to the Hudson House at Highlands Country Club this year; and their own Secret Santa has offered to match up to $30,000 in donations. Almost every member of the volunteer team is returning to offer a traditional Christmas meal of turkey, ham and tenderloin, dressing, and all the trimmings, plus dessert and a glass of wine for the adults. The event, created in 2001 because there were no places in Highlands for Highlanders or visitors to have a Christmas Day meal, has also become a source of funding for essential nonprofits in the Highlands area whose goal is to better the community through educational help, child mentoring, dental and medical care and a host of other essential services. The dinner has helped the Highlands School library purchase additional books. It was also fundamental in establishing the Hospice House of Macon County and supports REACH of Macon County, an organization providing a safe place and shelter for victims of sexual violence and abuse. Over the years the dinner, through its sponsorships and donations, has been able to gift over $200,000 to this community. 14 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
This year, their goal will be to maximize this extremely generous gift, and distribute as much as $60,000 to area nonprofit organizations. Each dollar donated becomes two dollars, that thousand dollar donation becomes $2,000! “This community is so blessed to have such philanthropic people in our midst,” says one of the organizers, Ricky Siegel. “Help us maximize this generous offer by being a sponsor for $100 as a Candle, $250 as an Ornament, $500 as a Present, $1,000 as a Star, or anything above $1,000 as a Superstar.” All donations and sponsorships are 100 percent tax deductible. Checks should be made out to H.A.N.D.S., the Highlands Area Nonprofit Donations Sharing, a 501(c)(3), and mailed to or dropped off at, Lakeside Restaurant, 531 Smallwood Avenue, or mailed to H.A.N.D.S. c/o Ricky Siegel, 55 4 ½ Street, Highlands, NC 28741. The dinner is by reservation only and may be made by calling (828) 526-9419. Seating will begin at 11:00 A.M. and they will serve until 5:00 P.M. The buffet for adults is $40, children 11 and under is $15, and kids 5 and under are free. So make your plans to join with friends and family at the Annual Highlands Christmas Dinner community event on Christmas Day and be a sponsor. Help them help those who help Highlands.

Highlands will always have a place for Santa – you can see him Saturdays in December (except December 6) on Main Street across from Reeves Hardware.
anta is coming to town! Each year as Santa prepares his list and checks it twice he takes time out of his busy schedule to visit Highlands to hear the wishes of children old and young. This year he will be at the old Chamber of Commerce location on Main Street across from Reeves Hardware and in front of Mountaintop Wine Shoppe. He’ll be there Saturdays in December before Christmas from 11:00-3:00, except December 6 when rumor has it that he will be a special guest at our Christmas Parade. Santa enjoys kicking back, relaxing and hearing the wishes of Highlanders and visitors so don’t miss your chance to visit and put in those last minute requests. This is also a great opportunity to capture those memories by having your picture taken with Santa. More than one family Christmas card photo has been taken with Santa on these special Saturday visits. If you have questions about Santa’s busy schedule or the events that mark Highlands’ Holiday Season – the Olde Mountain Christmas Parade or the worship schedules of local churches – contact the Highlands Visitor Center at (828) 526-2112.

Do you Hear EVENTS
What I Hear? by Wiley Sloan The Highlands Community Christian Chorale’s Christmas Program heralds the glories of the holiday season. Everyone is invited at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, December 13, and Sunday, December 14, at the First Baptist Church of Highlands.
I
t’s a true sign that the Christmas season has arrived when the Highlands Community Christian Chorale performs. This year, Highlands vocalists will be joined by voices from Sky Valley and Franklin to create a beautiful blend of heavenly voices – at the First Baptist Church of Highlands, 220 Main Street, at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, December 13, and 5:00 P.M. Sunday, December 14. Plan to stay for the reception following the Sunday concert. The ladies of the Church are well-known for their delicious goodies at these receptions. This year’s performance will be the 20th year that the chorale has blessed the community. Beginning at Labor Day, each year members of local churches gather each Monday night to hone their skills. Leadership of the chorale rotates among the various choral directors of area churches. This year’s director is Joe Powell of the First Baptist Church. Joe and his wife retired to Highlands after he completed a career as a high school band director. His plans for a leisurely retirement life have been postponed as he enjoys serving as choir director at First Baptist and leads the Highlands Male Chorus. Joe has compiled a list of traditional Christmas carols that everyone knows. You’ll hum along to “Silent Night” and “The Little Drummer Boy” (with accompaniment from Joe’s grandson on the drums). Members of the Baptist Church always look forward to a performance of “Silent Night” with vocals by Carolyn Patton accompanied by June Hogue on the piano. This is Joe’s first opportunity to lead the chorale. He has worked closely with artistic director Marybeth Brody to select an unforgettable playlist. “The dedication of each of these singers is amazing,” says Powell. “They give up their Monday nights for practice, they contribute $10 each toward the cost of music, all for the love of singing and to get to renew old friendships with folks they don’t see except during this season.” You will get a chance to sing with the chorale during the singalong number. Come early as the church tends to fill up quickly. Be prepared to share a small donation to help the chorale offset the cost of music.

Olde Mountain Christmas Parade Highlands’ Olde Mountain Christmas Parade, slated for 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 6, is a celebration of the best of the holiday spirit. Arrive at Main Street early to witness a community in love with Christmas.
W
ith a population of 942, you may expect Highlands’ Olde Mountain Christmas Parade, slated for 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 6, to last approximately 173 seconds. But if that’s what you’re thinking, you haven’t taken into account the town’s deep pool of community spirit. It’s not uncommon for the parade to boast over 80 entries. There’s a warm, homemade feel to much of the Highlands parade, since it’s staged entirely by local groups, churches, businesses, fire departments and bands of neighbors. It’s all delivered with pride, sparkle and more than a little bit of humor. You’ll find handmade floats, at least one marching band, dancing garden ladies, dogs that amble more or less information,

fire trucks, Smokey the Bear, camels and Wise Men, classic cars, horses, the Highlands High School Homecoming Court, local politicians, and, of course, Santa. People begin lining Main Street early to ensure they get a good view and to chat with neighbors and visitors. The parade route spans three blocks, so there should be plenty of room for everyone. If you’re part of a group that would like to be included in the lineup, contact the Highlands Chamber of Commerce at (828) 526-2112 or stop by the Visitor Center, 108 Main Street. If you’re thinking of inviting Santa to participate in your entry, please note that he’s already accepted the Chamber’s invitation to appear at the end of the parade. You wouldn’t want to confuse the kids.

t’s been a tradition for 40 years. The Annual Cashiers Christmas Parade has grown exponentially and has delighted onlookers with a wide variety of entries. With this year’s parade, held on Saturday, December 13, they will be celebrating not only their 40th Anniversary but the 50th Anniversary of the Sapphire Valley Ski Resort as well. Built in 1964 by Gene Howerdd Jr., the resort offered skiers an opportunity to snow ski and enjoy the Ski Sapphire Valley Lodge, which was operated in the one of the oldest homes in Sapphire Valley. To honor the resort, the theme for this year’s parade is “A White Christmas.” Festivities will begin at noon on Saturday, December 13 (the tradition of second Saturday in December every year). Prizes will be awarded for best entries ranging from the Cashiers Christmas Star to the Fruitcake Award. With hometown flair, floats, vintage cars, marching band, 22 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com

The Villlage Green, Cashiers’ jewel at the Crossroads, will shine for the holidays with Christmas on the Green.
ooking for a little sparkle this holiday season? Bring your family and friends to The Village Green for Cashiers’ third annual Christmas On the Green celebration. The 12.5-acre park in the heart of Cashiers will feature thousands of twinkling lights and trees decorated by local merchants and organizations from Thanksgiving weekend until New Year’s Day. “The Village Green exists to enhance the quality of community life by offering events like Christmas On the Green where people can make meaningful holiday memories,” says Jochen Lucke, Chairperson of The Village Green Board
of Directors. The Village Green is conserved and maintained by a nonprofit organization. “The Village Green is distinctive in that it is a free, public park for everyone to enjoy,” says Self. “However, the park receives no public funding and relies on the generosity of individual donors for its operation.” For more information, visit www.villagegreencashiersnc.com. The Players’ Gift by Jenny King Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory” will serve as The Highlands Cashiers Players’ Holiday Reading at the Highlands Performing Arts Center – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 18. There is no admission fee and everyone is invited.
T
he Highlands Cashiers Players once again present their annual Holiday Reading at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 18, at the Highlands Performing Arts Center. HCP Board members, cast and crew alike join together at the Highlands Performing Arts Center to offer this gift to the community. Each year is a different festively wrapped package that usually includes poetry, humorous readings, spiritual messages and song. The 2014 program will be especially touching with a staged reading of “A Christmas Memory,” by Truman Capote. “A Christmas Memory” is rich with evocative language that conjures up life in rural Alabama and the childhood of a boy who is placed in the care of his elderly relatives. It paints a vibrant picture of the closeness forged between two people who choose to focus on the simple pleasures and rituals of life. Several HCP actors will be participating, with veteran performer Dean Zuch serving as narrator. Music of the season will be included and refreshments will be served after the performance. No tickets or reservations are needed as the program is and has always been the Players’ gift to the community. Join the cast of “A Christmas Memory” and let them give you a present you’ll enjoy and long remember. thelaurelmagazine.com | December 2014 | 25
A Shop With A Cop Christmas EVENTS
Contributed by David Stroud, Highlands Rotary Club Shop with a Cop Bingo, slated for 6:30 P.M. Thursday, December 4, at the Highlands Community Building, supports an important program that pairs law enforcement officers with needy children.
T
he Rotary Club of Highlands will partner for the seventh year with the Macon County Sheriff’s Department and the Highlands Police Department on December 4 for Shop with a Cop Rotary Bingo to benefit the Macon County Shop with a Cop Program. Shop with a Cop provides Christmas to more than 200 Macon Country children who otherwise would have little or no Christmas. Each child is taken to Walmart by a law enforcement officer and will have $100 to spend with only a couple of conditions: first, they must buy something for themselves and second, something for someone else. When they’ve finished shopping with officers, the children will have lunch and a Christmas party where presents are wrapped, following a visit with Santa Claus complete with photos.
“Many of the children come from difficult circumstances, where law enforcement officers are perceived as bad guys,” says Macon County Sheriff Robbie Holland. “Shop with a Cop works to change that image through friendship and participating in a Christmas that otherwise wouldn’t happen.” Highlands Police Chief Bill Harrell joins Sheriff Holland saying, “Shop with a Cop is a positive experience not only for the children involved but also for our officers.” Shop with a Cop Rotary Bingo has been a significant revenue stream for this program. If you can’t attend the Bingo Night, slated for 6:30 P.M. December 4 at the Highlands Community Building, you can make a donation and drop it off at the Highlands Police Department, the Recreation Park front desk, or give it to any Highlands Rotarian.

Spreading Cover Artist Jill Wolfe
Her Wings by Donna Rhodes
J
ill Wolfe left Atlanta seven years ago to spread her artistic wings in Western North Carolina. Now a Cashiers resident, she happily pursues her painting career, showing exclusively at Smitten Gallery in Highlands. She comes by her love of art naturally. She says, “I grew up in a family of artists. My brother is a sculptor, one sister is an interior designer, the other an actress, my Dad, an oil painter, and my Mom, a watercolorist. Even though I was surrounded by art, I didn’t start painting until I moved from Atlanta to Cashiers.” How did she make such a quick transformation from paint dabbler to pro? She says, “I was lucky. Five years ago I took a beginners class at the Vero Beach Museum of art from renowned instructor and oil painter, Kathleen Staiger. She pushed me hard and taught me the intricacies of palette setup, layout, brush care, the basics of composition, and precision technique. Admission to her classes and her intensive color theory workshop kept me focused when I needed it most. This past year I have been fortunate to be a student of Cashiers resident Karen Weihs, famed ‘Colorist of the Carolinas.’ Karen has encouraged me to be more adventurous in techniques with the palette knife and layering…and to enjoy the magic of the paint as it swirls across the canvas. 36 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
These two teachers provided the foundation for a traditional approach with contemporary leanings. As Wolfe’s style evolves, she sees herself moving toward mixed media. She says, “Currently the subject matter of my work is nature: birds, animals, pastoral scenes, landscapes, mountains, etc. I have collected some wonderful pictures of animals in motion that I want to play with in my studio this winter.” While Wolfe enjoys roaming the diverse galleries of the River Arts District in Asheville, Mother Nature is her true muse. “I like to celebrate the joy of living in Cashiers. Inspiration comes from just looking out my window. I wouldn’t be as accomplished an artist if I still lived in Atlanta. The solitude of the mountains makes things clearer. And to be surrounded by Nature is heavenly inspiration.” Speaking of heavenly…it’s no accident her company name is Angel House. She believes angels are all around us, guiding us, helping us as they appear in different guises. She believes they have guided her this far and trusts they will be with her as she takes on new pursuits such as plein air painting in the next few years. She feels South of France could be in her future, but right now the Mountains of Western North Carolina are just fine. When Jill isn’t painting, she operates two other businesses:

Loving the Layers
T
Captured at an early age by the magic of glass, Terri Johansson shares her unparalleled vision with the world.
erri Johansson’s glass artwork is a window into her i lluminated soul. But her road to fused glass production had many twists and turns. “As a child I was always drawing animals and people,” she says. “My parents encouraged me to submit a drawing to ‘Art Instruction Schools,’ home study program. I was accepted into their program, but I quickly grew tired of it. Copying wasn’t letting me grow and develop as an artist. So I withdrew and started painting… images that were personal to me. My first painting sold when I was 11 years old.” After high school, she went to college for a couple of years. But again, she had a mind-set about her artistic destiny that didn’t fit any art school mold. “They tried to steer me in a direction that focused on one medium, but I’m a jill-of-all-trades,” Terri says. “So I quit school and explored any art that appealed to me. I did so many things I became a one-stop shopping spot for friends and family at Christmastime.” Among those pursuits were greeting card design, clothing, leather creations, rock and clay sculpting, and painting in all mediums. So how did she finally wind up working with glass? Public school students in Iowa, where she grew up, had the opportunity to tour the Iowa State University campus. When her class visited the art labs, the glass blowing studio mesmerized her. “They had to drag me away,” she says. “I was transfixed by the transparency and fluidity of the glass.” She started researching glasswork. All her earlier 2-D and 3-D explorations greatly enhanced her glass composition, texture, 38 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
color, and form. She was also drawn to glass’s versatility. As a self-taught glass artist, she says, “One thing I really like about glass is the endless number of things you can make out of it.” People love her work for its depth. They say they feel like they could step right into it and keep walking. That’s because of the complex process of layering the glass, sometimes 15-16 times. Each stratum requires hours of cooling before another layer can be applied. It can take weeks to do one piece. Because Terri calls both Florida and North Carolina home, she says there is never a shortage of nature’s inspiration. While she loves her visits to her cabin in North Carolina, she takes her ideas home to flesh them out in her studio in Florida. Currently she has three kilns of various sizes and is looking for an even larger fourth. Working with 1,250-1,500-degree heat is hazardous enough, but she also manipulates scalpel-edged glass that has her sporting a half-dozen Band-Aids on any given day. She is a walking ad for Johnson & Johnson. In spite of the challenges, glass is her passion. “If I don’t create, I don’t sleep well,” says Terri. And the delight people find in her work makes all the trials worth it. Locally you can see her creations at The Bascom Gift Shop, Tsartistry in Franklin, and Mountain Mist (during season) in Cashiers. Contact her through her website, www.terrijohanssonartist.com; phone, (904) 347-3142; or e-mail, terrijohanssonglassart@gmail.com. Ask her about commissioned work such as beautiful kitchen cabinet glass doors or custom holiday gifts.

ome to the Ballet! The Bolshoi Ballet, founded in 1776 is among the world’s oldest ballet companies and is known for its athleticism and dramatic intensity. This world-renowned company will be performing twice in December at The Highlands Performing Arts Center thanks to the LIVE in HD Series. On December 7 audiences can see “La Bayadère,” and on December 21, “The Nutcracker.” The ballet season will continue into 2015. Created in 1877 by the great Russian choreographer Marius Petipa, “La Bayadère,” set in lush and mysterious India, was conceived to satisfy the era’s taste for exoticism. It tells the story of the bayadère Nikiya and the warrior Solor, who have sworn eternal fidelity to one another. The High Brahmin, however, is also in love with Nikiya and learns of her relationship with Solor. The Rajah Dugmanta of Golconda has selected Solor to be the fiancé of his daughter Gamzatti and, not knowing this, Nikiya agrees to dance at the couple’s betrothal celebrations. The scene known as The Kingdom of the Shades is one of the most celebrated in the history of ballet. As the story goes, the “Kingdom of the Shades” is the opium-induced vision of the grieving
warrior Solor. One critic has said, “Such sublime simplicity, achingly beautiful, can move you to tears.” On Sunday, December 21 The Bolshoi Ballet presents the iconic “The Nutcracker.” This choreographic version, created for the Bolshoi by Yuri Grigorovich, is full of romanticism and philosophical reflections on ideal love. Masterfully interpreted by the Bolshoi dancers, it will enchant the whole family for the festive season, proving that one is never too young or too old to be swept away by “The Nutcracker.” The Highlands Performing Arts Center will be showing “La Bayadère” Sunday, December 7, at 12:55 P.M. and “The Nutcracker” on Sunday, December 21, at 12:55 P.M. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $17 for members and $10 for students and are subject to N.C. sales tax. Tickets may be purchased by going online at HighlandsPAC.org or by calling (828) 526-9047. THE ARTS
All Over the Map by Jenny King An exquisite new map by artist Melissa Smith captures the history and magic of Highlands.
T
here is no more personal art form than a portrait. Now Highlands has its own, thanks to artist Melissa Smith. “Discovering intimacy with a small section of earth and its people and history through art and research is something I absolutely love and relate to,” said Smith, who has been coming to Highlands for over 30 years. Her map, available locally at The Dry Sink, Mill Creek Gallery, and Highland Hiker, is more than cartography. It’s history. It is a love letter to Highlands and is pure unadulterated praise for the place she adores. Melissa started coming to Highlands in the 70s with family friends. Then, when she was old enough, she started camping and hiking here where she discovered the flora and fauna that make our plateau so unique. Her illustrations of a luna moth, a peregrine falcon and the ubiquitous black bear are works of art in and of themselves. You’ll also notice some special spots only someone who has studied the area would include, like the Bob Padgett Poplar Tree in Horse Cove and Grimshaws Post Office – places not everyone searches out but are easily recognized by those in the know. Thanks to her research, Melissa has added some historical notations to the map, too. She mentions Hillbilly Days, the significance of Joe Webb cabins and the history of the Highlands Biological Station, one of her favorite places in Highlands. It’s the first place she 42 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
visits when she comes back to the mountains and where she took her son to attend camp when he was younger. She was recently in town for the Highlands Own Arts and Crafts Show in October, where her art was extremely well received. Melissa is well known for her attention to detail, which she says, “…can also be a curse. I do graphite portraits of people and painstakingly detailed pen and inks. Ironically, I admire the casual loose style of impressionist art because it is so opposite of what I do.” Having grown up on boats, she thinks that perhaps this may be where her love of maps originated. “Perhaps my travels on the water from a young age helped develop my insatiable curiosity for all that surrounds me.” Highlands is far from the first map she’s done. Currently living in Fairhope on the Mobile Bay in Alabama, she says many of the bay homes have maps as focal points of their décor. She was approached to create updated versions of the area and since then her illustrated cartographies have expanded to include the Dauphin Island Map, the Tensaw-Mobile Delta Map and individual wedding maps. Visit MobileBayMaps.com to see her work and order maps for the gift-giving season. Smith did say that her maps are particularly popular with men, so keep that in mind when shopping for the guy who has everything.

Asia House by Luke Osteen | Photos by Marjorie Christiansen
I
spent a lot of my childhood in Asia. Looking back, I see that it’s blessed my life in almost every aspect. I’m patient to a fault, tolerant of beliefs that are wildly divergent from my own and, this is a gift from the Thai people for which I’ll always be grateful, I’m able to discern the unexpected delights embedded in everyday existence. But all that time spent in the East has left me with one major fault that I’m unable to shake – I’m an incontrovertible Asian food snob. I’ve lost count, it’s got to be hundreds, of Indian, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Tibetan restaurants that have left me cold and unsettled, like two-day old kimchee. Maybe they make too many concessions to the American palate. Maybe there are too many ingredient substitutions. Maybe the demands upon a busy kitchen just don’t allow the application of time and attention demanded by traditional recipes. I try to like these places, I really do, because they represent an opportunity to capture a cherished, deeply felt, portion of my youth. Nope. All too often I walk away vaguely disappointed by the attempt. My friends leave the places feeling full and happy, but I’m left with an unshakable sense of It Might Have Been. That’s why I was so delighted by a recent visit to Asia House at Helen’s Barn in Highlands. Somehow, even with a vast pan-Asian menu, someone in the kitchen gets it. This is food prepared with care and reverence for technique. Consider the Homemade Wonton Soup. It’s all-too tempting to Westernize this most basic of comfort foods. Americans like their soups “enhanced” with salt and a dash of MSG. We imagine that it gives a necessary kick, as though millennia worth of Chinese chefs 46 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
somehow got it wrong. Asia House’s soup was served in traditional Ningbo style with a delicate broth that allowed the subtle interplay between scallions and wontons to be revealed. That devotion to culinary heritage carried over into the other appetizers we enjoyed – Thai Hot and Sour Soup, and Crispy Peppercorn Squid. That’s the downfall of so many Asian restaurants – they try to replicate the dishes from a half dozen cultures and what they end up delivering is sad and knuckled, a meal with no country. Somehow, somehow, the kitchen at Asia House gets it right. We tried to challenge the chef by ordering dishes from a lot of different countries – Thai Style Mango Chicken, General Tso’s Shrimp (yes, I know it’s a strange Chinese hybrid, but it tasted authentic. If you’d like to know more about this conundrum, read the delicious “The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food” by Jennifer 8. Lee.), and the Asia House Steak. The kitchen rose to the challenge and delivered dishes that were true to the heritage of each of these cultures. Once again I’ve run out of room – I haven’t even mentioned the full sushi bar (try the Dancing Eel Dragon Roll) or the extraordinary Hibachi dinners, or even the salads (make sure that at least one person in your party orders the Kani Salad, a seductive blending of crab, caviar and cucumber, adorned with spicy mayonnaise, then make sure that person shares with everyone else). Asia House is a real gem. I’ve traveled across continents and decades to find it. It’s open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. For information and reservations, call (828) 787-1680.

his common frog closely resembles the bullfrog but may be distinguished by the presence of a distinct ridge or fold of skin — called a dorsolateral fold — on either side of its body. The green frog is more often brown or bronze than green, but some bright green is often present around the face and lips. Its belly is white, usually with at least some dark spots or mottling. Green frogs are smaller than bullfrogs, but their habitats and habits are similar. They are found throughout the state with the exception of some barrier islands. Eggs are deposited as a surface mass. The tadpoles resemble those of the bullfrog but are smaller, often having a lower tail fin and lacking distinct black dots. Tadpoles may take up to a year to transform.

iological field stations tend to be established in areas with especially noteworthy biological characteristics. It’s easy to see what makes the Highlands-Cashiers area special in this regard, situated near the epicenter of biodiversity, largely unrivalled in the temperate zones of the world. Salamander diversity, in particular, is noteworthy — and while salamanders were not the driving force behind the establishment of the Highlands Biological Station (HBS) in the late 1920s, the scientific study of this fascinating and important group of amphibians soon became one of the hallmarks of research and education here. The Appalachians are home to 11 percent of the world’s 671 salamander species, making it an extraordinary salamander biodiversity hotspot. What’s more, nearly half of these species are found nowhere else on earth. Accordingly, southern mountains have been a Mecca for generations of salamander biologists, and much of their work has been based at HBS. Legions of students from around the country studying under well-known salamander researchers have based their work at Highlands. Why the tremendous interest in salamanders? This group is especially instructive to biologists in a number of ways. Their spectacular diversity in these mountains, where related species 58 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
are often found on opposite sides of a single ridge or from base to summit of a single mountain, have made them a model group for studying evolutionary diversification. Salamanders are especially sensitive to environmental degradation, and serve as herpetological canaries in the coal mine. Declines in salamander species are alarming: the studies conducted in part out of HBS by Dr. Richard Highton and his students suggested that populations of 38 species in the genus Plethodon declined by as much as 50 percent through the 1990s. These sorts of studies are the tip of the salamander iceberg: research out of HBS has also focused on salamanders in studies of community ecology, development, physiology, neurobiology, and behavior. Many of these lines of research continue at HBS today. In the past decade alone the Highlands Biological Foundation, Inc. has awarded nearly 50 grants to graduate students from around the country in support of salamander research projects. Much remains to be discovered — consider that the newest salamander species was found in 2009 right under our noses, a short distance from Highlands. This diminutive salamander species was named Urspelerpes brucei, a fitting tribute to HBS Executive Director Emeritus Richard Bruce.

Turtleback Falls About 1/3 mile past Rainbow Falls (take trail at Gorges State Park) is Turtleback Falls, a 20-foot drop over a curved rockface into a pool that can have strong currents. At lower water levels, it’s a popular spot to go sliding and swimming. You should be a good swimmer, since there are no lifeguards. The rocks and currents can make it dangerous if inexperienced. Do not attempt to slide when water is high, since the rushing water can take you down river over Rainbow Falls. There are several great vantage points to enjoy the falls - and the people sliding.

Cool Yule
Legends
by Donna Rhodes | Photo courtesy Highlands Historical Society
T
Yep, the Gavel Goat is just one of many unlikely animals who play a part in the Christmas celebration.
here are many animal legends woven into the Christmas story to which residents of the Carolina mountains can relate. Lambs, cattle, donkeys, partridges/turtledoves, and other domestic and wild creatures play important roles in the celebration of Christ’s birth. And though not part of the nativity, deer are dear to those who love Old St. Nick. You might be surprised to know that other ordinary animals that populate the Highlands Plateau such as the spider, the rooster, and the goat also have a place in Christmas lore around the world. In a Polish legend spiders wove a blanket (part of the swaddling clothes) for the Baby Jesus the night he was born. Another legend from the Ukraine tells of an old woman who had no money to decorate her tree or buy gifts. Christmas Eve, while she slept, spiders spun webs all over her bare tree. Christmas morning, when the sun’s rays shone through the window the light turned the webs into strands of pure silver and gold. To this day, spiders in that part of the world are considered symbols of luck and prosperity. In Bolivia the Mass del Gallo, Mass of the Rooster, is observed on Christmas Eve. Some worshippers even bring roosters to the 64 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
midnight Mass. The rooster is so honored because he is believed to be the first animal to announce the birth of Christ. And, finally here’s a tip of the fuzzy red hat to Santa, though this may get his goat. The Swedish Santa Claus, Jultomten, has a helper who delivers toys to children. He is a goat named Julbocken, a.k.a. The Gavel Goat. In his honor, little straw goat ornaments are classic Swedish Christmas tree decorations. In 1966 a giant straw goat was erected in Castle Square in Gavel, Sweden. Sadly the Gavel Goat was burned. But every year since, a giant straw goat is erected at the square and the game is afoot to see who can burn it versus who can protect it. So far the burners are winning. The next time you are tempted to smack an arachnid, simmer up a rooster stew, or get as giddy as a goat, reconsider and think of the ways in which each animal has contributed to worldwide holiday joy. And while you are at it, spread some holiday cheer by helping one of the wonderful animal rescue agencies in our region make legendary history of its own. To learn more about these agencies and lore of the mountains read Ran Shaffner’s, “Heart of the Blue Ridge.” Highlands Historical Society visits will resume in the late spring. In the meantime, go online to www.highlandshistory.com or email highlandshistory@nctv.com.

White Open Contributed by Rick Stargel Skiing at Sapphire Valley is the product of a man with boundless energy and an unshakeable vision.
A
fter several years of taking his family from Sapphire Valley over to the Cataloochee Ski Area, Gene Howerdd Jr. (resort owner at the time) knew Sapphire Valley could support another southern ski area. With a prefect north facing slope and the Horsepasture River at the base, Ski Sapphire Valley’s design work started in late 1963. Snow making systems, a rope tow and renovation of the old farmhouse begin immediately. For the first year, Ski Sapphire Valley provided one lift, a beginner area and toboggan or bobsled run. The bobsled run was located on the lower, left section of today’s main ski run. In 1964 in addition to the Ski Area, the Hogback Lake real estate development was also began. Anyone who purchased a lot on the new lake received free passes to the new Ski Sapphire Valley ski area. To make the deal even better, real estate
purchasers also received a set of custom skis, boots, and poles. With two very successful winters seasons at Ski Sappphire Valley, lift towers, a double chair lift and expanded snow making equipment were installed in 1966 and the intermediate and advanced ski runs opened. Modeled after the small ski lodges and huts found in the Alps, the first Ski Lodge was an old farmhouse where afternoon cheese fondue and wine were a common offering. An adjacent ‘warming hut’ with an old free-standing fireplace provided a place for skiers to warm up and get back on the slopes. To complete the scene, Mr. Howerdd hired two Austrian ski professionals to run the Ski School and provide entertainment at night . The Austrian pair, Hans and Deter, served up cocktails and music in the Fairfield Inn at night after a day of teaching schussing, christianias, and stemming on the slopes!

ouise Delong had just moved to Atlanta from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and friends decided to play matchmaker. Over a dinner party at their home, Louise met Johnny and sparks instantly ignited. Louise is a veterinarian and Johnny a real estate developer with Gables Residential. Eleven months later Johnny asked Louise to marry him and both knew immediately that they wanted to be married in Highlands. Johnny’s parents have a place in Highlands and the couple had spent a lot of time in Highlands hiking with their dogs, canoeing and enjoying the outdoors. “The Inn at Half Mile Farm is near Johnny’s parent’s home in Mirror Lake and we loved the proximity to the area where we had spent so much time together and that the inn is so near to town,” says Louise. “We wanted our group of friends to all
be in one place to get to know one another, like an adult camp for the weekend. The setting is beautiful and I was especially drawn to the staff, especially the innkeepers who were so laid back and told us that the inn was our place for the weekend and we could do whatever we wanted.” The Bascom was chosen for the rehearsal dinner and Tim Lundy of Rosewood/Distinctive Design Events was hired for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding. The food component to this weekend of festivities was most important to the bride and groom and the culinary team at Rosewood/Distinctive Events created a heavily-laden game menu for the rehearsal dinner which included duck, quail, lamb and a roasted elk chop carving station. The wedding reception menu was a southern menu with a

touch of Britain. Louise’s mom is British and she wanted to represent that part of her heritage. Rosewood/Distinctive Design Events created a “southern inspired” menu for the wedding couple, contrasting a local red trout BLT with Venison Blue Cheese Meatballs, while adding NC Stone-Ground Grits with Sautéed Atlantic Coast Shrimp with Roasted Garlic Gravy and finishing the meal with an English Lemon Sponge Cake and Fresh Raspberries and Pimms cups. Rosewood/Distinctive Design Events not only handled the catering but also did the florals and cakes. “Tim was very easy to work with and I was astonished at how much he could take on and he was always organized,” says Louise. “He totally blew us away at the tasting and wanted to make sure I had exactly what I envisioned for that day, and we did.” “My inspiration for this beautiful wedding was the premise of two families blending together, the bride’s family had 76 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
an English background and the groom’s family was a strong Southeastern family,” Tim says. “We blended touches of old world English silver with mountain touches of stained hardwood farm tables and driftwood slat-back chairs and finished it off with soft pastel florals of roses, Ranunculus, Hydrangeas, French Stock, Lisianthus and Hypericum berries.” Louise’s favorite detail of the day was her Reem Acra wedding dress. “I had never envisioned what I would wear at my wedding and found my dress at Kelly’s Closet in Atlanta. It made me feel so beautiful! I am dying to wear it again and so sad to have to put it in my closet. Walking down the aisle was my favorite moment, it was cool because at that moment I was in the center of my family and friends and walking toward the person I love, it was a surreal moment. There was a lot of emotion watching Johnny’s face,” says Louise. Louise hired Terri Clark Photography out of Sylva to capture

the memories of the day and her favorite image was of the two of them together at the ceremony site. Louise’s father is a graphic designer and designed her paper suite for the wedding. He designed a floral liner for the wedding invitation, giving guests a glimpse of what was to come. Louise and her mom did the gift bags with lots of personal touches. They made trail mix and put in iced dog cookies, a lab and a golden. It was a family affair and everyone put their
special touch on the wedding. The couple now resides in Atlanta and is searching for a home for their blended family of four legged kids. Louise came to the marriage with a four-and-a-half-year-old chocolate lab and a 10-year-old orange tabby and Johnny has a 14-year-old golden retriever and an outdoor cat. It has been a smooth transition to married life and since the animals absolutely are totally good with one another, it’s a happy place.

Manage Windfalls Wisely HOMES & LIFESTYLES

lthough the odds of winning the lottery may be stacked against you, there’s a chance you’ll receive a large -- perhaps unexpected -- financial windfall at some point during your life. Regardless of how it arrives -inheritance, insurance payout, divorce settlement, retirement-plan distribution, sale of a business or company stock
options -- careful money management is critical to enjoying the money for years to come. Unfortunately, many windfall recipients fail to use their newfound wealth wisely and are left with little or no savings -- and lots of regret. To avoid joining their ranks, there are a number of important considerations to keep in mind when receiving large cash payouts. Avoid Sudden Impulses: Most windfalls are squandered during the first days, weeks and months as recipients make impulsive decisions to quit their jobs, take exotic vacations, or buy a new house or car. For this reason, the best course of action is often to leave the entire sum in a money-market account for the first six months. Many people mistakenly believe that a large sum of money is the answer to all of their problems. In fact it often creates new anxiety and stress. Invest for Long-Term Gains: While using a portion of the
80 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
windfall to reduce debt and pay bills is often a good idea, investing a significant sum for your future is also recommended when suitable. The windfall’s potential for appreciation can be significantly increased through long-term investments in both stocks and bonds. Keep in mind, though, that investing money carries risk as well. In many cases, investing a windfall can be a difficult decision, but it’s important to remember that, factoring in inflation, cash that is not invested could be losing purchasing power. Upon hearing about your windfall, friends and relatives may come forward offering financial advice. While they may have your best interests at heart, their advice might not help you achieve your financial goals. Before you make any investment decision, it’s important to review your existing holdings, expected expenses, employment security, risk tolerance, taxes and time
horizon before retirement. A professional Financial Advisor can help you evaluate these variables and craft a longterm plan to help you achieve your goals. Manage Taxes: A large financial windfall will quickly educate any unsuspecting recipient about the tax strings attached. Check with a tax advisor or accountant to determine how much to set aside for taxes. Since the windfall may push you into a higher tax bracket, it’s a good idea to discuss how to manage future taxes. How you spend, save and invest your financial windfall will determine whether it helps you achieve your financial goals or leaves you with regret. To learn more about effectively managing an inheritance, insurance payout, divorce settlement, retirement-plan distribution, sale of business or company stock options, contact your Financial Advisor.

Arthritis – The Two-sided Coin HOMES & LIFESTYLES
Contributed by Dr. Sue Aery, Aery Chiropractic & Acupuncture (828) 526-1022
A
rthritis comes in two forms- one is inflammatory and the other causes inflammation. The end result of both is PAIN! With so many questions regarding arthritis, degenerative joint disease, bone on bone issues and many
others, the next important question is what to do about arthritis??? It’s a bit complicated but what I say to most patients is this: apply heat, get moving and get gentle adjustments to the affected joints. With the autoimmune version of arthritis, treatment has to proceed even more cautiously. The end result of untreated arthritis in general is pain and loss of motion in a joint. The arthritis that is inflammatory in origin usually stems from an autoimmune process where the body attacks the joint tissue and breaks down the joint. Two common forms of this type are rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis. The other, more common type
of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA) where the joint breaks down and causes surrounding inflammation and pain. Most of the natural treatments for arthritis help to block pain molecules while increasing blood flow around the joint. The formula that I frequently suggest is acupuncture, gentle chiropractic manipulation, massage therapy, nutritional changes and exercise. All of these components together help to increase circulation and mobility. When treated well and skillfully, joints that are in distress will respond by movement becoming easier and less painful. One reason that arthritic pain increases over time is because there is less blood circulation in a
joint that progressively has less space. When body tissue is deprived of blood flow, pain becomes more evident and the desire to get up and move begins to wane. I encourage my patients to exercise gently, go to the pool, walk, ride a stationary bike or elliptical for 20-30 minutes per day. This increases blood flow and heart function to bathe the tissues even during rest. A heating pad for 15 minutes once or twice per day also helps increase blood flow. No matter what the origin of the arthritis, don’t just accept it or mask it with prescription drugs! Do something about it to feel better and have the ability to move more and more easily!

Finding the Funny The O-fish-al Cancer Biter. Magnified 1010X.
T
by Donna Rhodes
Left to her own devices, Donna’s come up with a new weapon in the arsenal of cancer fighters that’s as unique as, well, Donna. She’ll share it with you and the whole world.
his is the latest installment in a series on dealing with a cancer diagnosis. It’s time for: da-da-da-DAHHHHH…Laughter Therapy and Visualization. A cancer diagnosis sucks. It sucks socks…dirty socks…dirty socks with hairy fungus. But there it is. No denying it. I got the Big C. Now what do I do? A counselor once told me I was lucky that I was so creative. I could turn tragedy into art. At the time, I wanted to knock her into next week. I had no idea how to transform loss into gain. Funny thing how Life gives you endless opportunities to practice what you don’t know…until you know it. Three decades later, I have become an accomplished poop alchemist. I can gold-plate just about anything, cancer included. Not that it deserves exultation. But if gold-plating it means turning it into something I can laugh at, or, better yet, make others laugh at it, then heat up the 14 karat and pour it on. And what better place to start than my oncologist’s office? He had no funny anywhere. All the paintings and graphics on his walls were of serene scenes. Soothing and pastoral, yes, but I needed some funny. I pointed that out to him and he agreed. So I made him some funny to hang on the wall in the form of a repurposed guitar. Allow me to introduce you to: Cancer Biter. The O-fish-al Cancer Biter. Magnified 1010X. Cancer Biter and its pals might not show up on any medical
microscope, but they are as real as you can imagine. Think of them as miniature superheroes defending against malignancies mini-to-mega. On command, schools of Cancer Biters will swim around in the bloodstream and gobble up every free radical/cancer creep they can find. Check out our superhero’s guitar-sonar antenna. Imagine Cancer Biter homing in on a bad cell: It plucks it, swallows it whole, poops out a healthy new cell, and goes for another. Multiply that by a zillion enthusiastic pluckers just like him, and cancer is history, baby. Cancer Biters are voracious little beasties. If you wish to enlist their help all you have to do is envision an army of them closing in on free radicals and tumors. So, water you waiting for? Help C.B. take a bite out of cancer. Tickle its fin, rub its belly, and it will follow you anywhere. Just ask your sturgeon. He/she will tell you visualizing can’t hurt. Try it just for the halibut. Cancer Biter and company are swimming their way to your wellness…body and sole. And since we all have free radicals floating around in our bloodstreams, it can’t hurt to do a little Cancer Biter visualization, even without a diagnosis. Laughing, creating positive mental images, eating right, exercising, frequent check-ups, and biting back are terrific tools for living and staying in a cancer-free zone.

Through the efforts of Deane Briggs, Sid Nurkin and Bill Getzen, the non-profit 54 Cherrywood Drive Corporation was formed and meetings were held with citizens from Cullasaja Club, Wildcat Cliffs Country Club, Wildwood Mountain Subdivision, Cowee Ridge, Cowee Mountain, Wildcat Ridge Association, and Whiteside Mountain Road Association. With contributions obtained from these and also neighboring Lake Osseroga, Shortoff Mountain, and Ravenel Lake Associations, property was purchased at the corner of US 64 and Cherrywood Drive. Neighboring property owner Jeff Sikes and his 84 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
Reclaimations business pledged to donate fill dirt and reclaimed lumber to enhance the building. A contract was signed with Western Builders of Sylva Inc. to begin construction and a groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 6. Construction is expected to be complete in May 2015, and once the fire sub-station is certified, it will be conveyed to the Town of Highlands. This fire sub-station will not only benefit citizens living beyond a five mile distance from the downtown station with lowered property insurance, but will offer quicker response times for fire calls and emergencies for all property owners living near the sub-station. Having this second fire station is really an advantage for the entire Highlands community and additional funds are still certainly welcome to help purchase additional needed fire equipment. Contributions are encouraged and may be mailed to 54 Cherrywood Drive Corporation, 1371 Cullasaja Club Drive, Highlands, NC 28741.

GIVING BACK
The Headwaters of Our Future Contributed by Dr. Gary Wein, Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust A pair of gifts to Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust showcases the best of the holiday spirit, this season and far into the future.
T
he holiday season is a time for giving and reflection. This holiday, Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust celebrates the generosity of people who believe in their mission “to protect valuable land resources for all generations.” Through this support, HCLT was able to complete two more conservation projects this year; accepting the donation of the summit of Laurel Knob in Cashiers from Tom and Georgene German, and an 11-acre conservation easement in Highlands, Edwards Creek Headwaters, donated by Curtis Hertwig.
Tom and Georgene cherish Laurel Knob so dearly that when it became apparent that they could no longer take care of it, they decided to donate it to someone who could, HCLT. Laurel Knob creates part of the vista seen by hundreds of properties in Jackson and Macon Counties. It features a unique and rare ecosystem, where a rock outcrop community containing a stand of table mountain pine is combined with a vertical wetland containing sphagnum moss, sundews and other wetland plants, created by a permanent stream that flows over the rock face. The German’s
86 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
have entrusted HCLT to care for this mountain and maintain its healthy ecosystems. Curtis Hertwig also had a vision to protect a precious piece of land forever. Edwards Creek Headwaters is a property located in Horse Cove adjacent to National Forest lands. A network of small, yet vital, streams originates on this property. These streams form a part of the headwaters for Edwards Creek that ultimately flows into the Chattooga River. HCLT is thrilled to care for these two properties and three others they hope to complete soon, adding to the
2500+ acres of land they already protect. Through the generosity of land donors, HCLT is able to maintain these lands so they can be enjoyed in their natural state, providing clean water, healthy wildlife habitat, and scenic vistas for ours and future generations. Moreover, it is through donations from our supporters that HCLT is able to facilitate this care and continue to manage these invaluable properties. During this season of giving, consider a donation that will make a lasting impact on future generations through HCLT. Visit hicashlt.org or call (828) 526-1111.
Happy to Hoof It GIVING BACK
Contributed by Sue Blair, Director Carpe Diem Farms Carpe Diem Farms’ mission is enhanced by the arrival of two tireless champions of all things equine – Sully Hildebrand and Dave Giza.
C
hristmas at Carpe Diem Farms arrived early in the form of snow! The blanket of snow that covered the ground November 1, a magical gift from nature, enhanced the early presents we received of the human variety. CDF offers a variety of programs and individual opportunities for participants to interact, learn and be with the horses. Horses as healers have a unique ability to see past the masks we wear and touch our souls. They “read” our energy and as Churchill said, “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.” Sully Hildebrand, a native of New Orleans was our first early gift. The perfect addition to the CDF team, Sully has taken a “gap year” between high school and college to re-visit her connection with horses, which began for her as an eight-year-old. She arrived at the farm to volunteer and apprentice, learning the CDF way of horsemanship. She has participated daily with chores, training, and riding. Her computer skills have been uti-
lized to revamp our CDF website and develop a video of case studies and information for our booth at the International Hoof Care Summit. She has learned to work in the Easy’s Slipper factory, helping us perfect the shoe making process. Her fresh ideas have led to several innovations and her cheerful presence makes her a valuable gift. Gift number two, Dave Giza of Genesis Farriers of Culpeper, Virginia, is testing Easy’s Slippers on Clydesdales, Percherons, Warmbloods, minis, and more. He traveled to the farm to share his case studies, work on our horses and prepare for the Summit and our December presentation at the Kentucky Horseshoeing School. A huge gift to horses, Dave is helping us prove Easy’s Slipper to be a new industry standard in healing issues of the hoof as well as pain management and enhancing the overall well-being of our equine partners. May your blessings be as merry as ours! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. CDF is a 501©(3) educational foundation.
Merry Everything from CLE Contributed by Bonnie Dayton Energized by a wildly successful 2014, the Center for Life Enrichment is planning an even more ambitious season next year. For information or membership options, call (828) 526-8811.
T
he Center for Life Enrichment celebrated its most successful season to date. CLE held 120 classes in the state-of-the-art lecture hall on topics ranging from growing dahlias, to the CIA and traveled from Asheville to Cuba! We had two well-attended lectures that were free to the public -- Sandra Mackey, a Middle East expert gave a current events lecture on U.S. Security, The Middle East and ISIS; and retired attorneys Barrett Hawks and Jim Groton shared advice and tips on handling conflict in work and personal relationships. The administrative offices moved to a bigger, updated office space in the lower level of the Peggy Crosby Center as well as added a classroom for smaller classes such as computer and foreign language classes. As great as the 2014 season was, 2015 is looking even better! The speakers and topics will continue to be top-notch, educat-
ing and enlightening. We will continue to offer great up-to-date current affairs lectures, computer classes and an array of culinary classes. A once-in-a-lifetime, first-class trip is planned to Russia in September 2015 with classes focused on Russian art, history and politics to highlight the trip. Space for this trip is limited, so if you are interested please call the CLE office (828) 526-8811 for more information. A special thanks to all of our members for your continued support! For information on the Center for Life Enrichment or becoming a member please call (828) 526-8811, visit CLEhighlands.com or email us at clehighlands@yahoo.com. If you’re looking for a great Christmas gift, consider giving a membership to CLE. Membership levels start at $35. Have a wonderful Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in 2015!

Little Moments, Big Magic Contributed by Debbie Lassiter, Big Brothers Big Sisters The Big Brothers/Big Sisters program is built upon moments shared between Littles and Bigs and the marvelous possibilities that they offer.
A
s Program Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters in both Highlands and Cashiers, I have the wonderful opportunity to meet many individuals that make up the fabric of our communities. The BBBS mentors are as varied as you can get, from ages 23 to mid-80s; artist, realtor, small business owner, or retired doctor -- a great cross-section of “plateau folks.” I wish all of them a very happy holiday season. May they receive the blessings they deserve for giving of themselves to enrich others. My special holiday gratitude goes to the families that have joined as partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Kudos to you for seeking ways to broaden your child’s world. What better present can you give a child than another positive role model who can help “spark” new interests and offer
new experiences?! Parents and guardians who recognize that it “takes a village to raise a child” have given their children a great boost. They are telling their child to reach for the stars; there is no limit on what they can accomplish with help. To me, this picture of “Little” JT captured by his “Big Brother” Peter conveys the mission of BBBS. I see JT looking out into the far beyond, dreaming of his future, while enjoying this special place that his Big Brother shared with him. Little Moments…Big Magic! I welcome any parent or guardian into the Big Brothers Big Sisters family. Opportunities abound for your child. Contact Debbie Lassiter at (828) 526-4044 or highlands@bbbswnc.org or cashiers@bbbswnc.org to learn more.

appy Holidays from National Alliance on Mental Illness Appalachian South. The season’s universal message of unity, peace and love can bring joy and remind us to stay calm. Unfortunately, many would argue that “Bah, humbug” is much more reflective of their feelings this time of year. Tips for combating the Holiday Blues are: •Don’t worry about how things “should” be •Do you really “have” to do everything on your list? •Plan Ahead •Learn to Say “No” •Be Realistic •Remember: We all have complex family dynamics
Some simple steps can ensure a happy holiday season and a productive 2015.
•Remember: We all have personal/individual stressors •Volunteering can be a great source of comfort •Keep your own well-being in mind. Self-care is important, now and throughout the year •Exercise can also help, with its known anti-anxiety, anti-depression effects. NAMI Appalachian South is having a Holiday Party. If you have questions about NAMI, this would be a friendly atmosphere for you to talk with NAMI members. Call (828) 526-9510 for information. Santa’s Reading Brigade GIVING BACK
Contributed by Tonya Hensley, Literacy Council of Highlands
A
New faces will help the Literacy Council of Highlands fulfill its mission at it enters its 23rd year of service to the community.
s we near the end of our 22nd year of service, I’ve been reflecting on the history of the Literacy Council. According to an early newspaper article, “The council was able to begin operation through a $1,000 grant from the Highlands Rotary Club.” I am by no means a literacy council historian, as I’ve only been part of the organization for a little over four years, but I do see how much we’ve grown and evolved over the years. In the beginning, Suzie deVille requested that community residents help decide the scope of its volunteer services, and that is, indeed, what we continue to do. In addition to our regular programs, we can provide most educational services requested of us. Therefore, if you or someone you know is in need of educational services, please contact our programs coordinator, Brandy McElroy. Sadly, it is the end of an era here at the Council as we bid farewell to Judy Joyner, our programs coordinator for the last four years. She is excited to begin this new chapter of her life, playing with her grandchildren and spending more time with her husband, Tom. Judy has been an invaluable part of the team here and we will miss her greatly. With that said, we welcome two new employees, Brandy McElroy as programs coordinator and Kathryn Buckley as education coordinator. We are excited to welcome these two new

ladies onto our team. They both have outstanding experience and energy to add to our programs. December is a fun month here at the council. The Highlands Olde Mountain Christmas Parade gives us the chance to stroll through our beautiful downtown and personally hand out books to children. Last year, we handed out 750 books. Thanks to our partner First Book National Book Bank, and a children’s book grant from the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, we are able to expand this distribution number to 1,000 books this year! So be sure to bring your little ones out to enjoy the festivities on December 6! Also in December is Polar Express Night, a family literacy event for kindergarten-third graders, to be held here at the Peggy Crosby Center on December 11 from 5:30 – 7:00 P.M. The evening’s festivities include food, games, and activities for the family. All children will receive a book and other special treats. There may even be an appearance by Santa himself! Spaces are limited, so call or e-mail Brandy to make your reservation today! We’re located in the Peggy Crosby Center, 348 South Fifth Street in Highlands. For more information, stop by and see us, call us at (828) 526-0863, email us at brandymac23@yahoo.com or thensley22@yahoo.com, or visit us on the web at www.highlandsliteracy.com.
A Million Rotarians Join the Fight GIVING BACK
Contributed by David Stroud, Highlands Rotary Club
P
Thanks to efforts by its members, Highlands Rotary plays a role in eradicating the last pockets of polio.
olio is a crippling and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus -- Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Fewer than 250 polio cases were reported worldwide in 2012, which is a 99 percent reduction since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks and if we don’t stay the course, experts say polio could rebound to 10 million cases in the next 40 years. Additional funding will help to end polio now. Thanks to a new campaign, every dollar donated by Rotary will be matched
2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. Rotary has contributed more than $1.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute over $9 billion to the effort. More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-by-side with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotarians work with partners like UNICEF to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to share the message with those isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support. For more information, please visit www.highlandsrotary.org.
Leadership Highlands Contributed by Christy Kelly
L
Leadership Highlands has blossomed into a powerful force for the good of the entire community.
ike many good things, it started with a conversation. In the fall of 1998, Rex Toothman and Christy Kelly were discussing leadership. The conversation centered on whether or not it was possible to “teach” leadership. Each had experienced so-called ‘leadership training’ programs, and as they continued to discuss the possibility of a leadership program in Highlands they knew it would have to be something different. Certainly one unique thing about Highlands is the fact that many of its residents have held leadership positions and have been highly successful. An experiential learning and networking program with a diverse class of participants
where teaching and learning would take place in an interactive fashion was envisioned. Both experienced and emerging leaders would benefit by expanding their knowledge of Highlands, and the opportunities for leadership that this community offers. As the conversation continued, Anne Jones, then executive director of the Peggy Crosby Community Services Center joined, and the three then brought together The Center For Life Enrichment, The Highlands Chamber of Commerce and The Peggy Crosby Center as sponsors. A Planning and Steering Committee representing each organization was formed. From The Center for Life Enrichment
were Rex Toothman and Stephen L. Lucas; Christy Kelly and Dennis Wilson represented the Chamber; and Anne Jones and La Donna Keener represented The Peggy Crosby Center. The curriculum consisted of an Opening and Closing Retreat, as well as one day per month for immersion in important elements of the community. Class members worked in teams of two, designing and presenting a full day of programming on the following topics: Area Economy, Education, Government, Law Enforcement, Human Services, Health, and Arts and Culture The Charter Class was convened in November 1999 and graduation took place in June 2000. Graduates in The Lead-
ership Highlands Charter Class of 2000 were: Ann Baird, Tay Bronaugh, Jim Graham, Mindy Green, Dave Jellison, Anne Jones, Christy Kelly, Stephen Lucas, Moyna Monroe, Steve Perry, Tony Potts, Derek Taylor and Barbara Werder. Leadership Highlands Alumni now number over 125, and with each class the program has changed and grown. The Highlands Chamber of Commerce continues to sponsor Leadership Highlands with Visitor Center Director Jennifer Cunningham serving as president. Many exciting things are being planned for the 15th Anniversary year, and all alumni are encouraged to get involved. Contact Jennifer at (828) 5262112 for more information.

or more than two decades, The Village Green has served as the green heart of Cashiers. These 12.5 acres of privately conserved park land offer gathering, recreational and event space for public enjoyment. The natural beauty of The Village Green draws friends walking dogs throughout the meandering paths; children frolicking on the expansive playground; and folks enjoying their lunch break at one of the many picnic shelters. On snowy winter days, it’s an inviting space to build a snowman or make snow angels on the lawn. In 2014, The Village Green hosted more than 100 events and celebrations, including birthday parties, family reunions, weddings and even a pig roast! It also serves as the venue for outdoor arts and cultural festivals, civic and religious observances as well as the popular, free Friday night concert series, Groovin’ On the Green. The Village Green provided the Fourth of July public fireworks display for the community. The Village Green also organized Arts On the Green, Cashiers Plein 94 | December 2014 | thelaurelmagazine.com
Air Festival, a week of events spotlighting open air artists. The Village Nature Series, a monthly naturalist program in partnership with the Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, featured presentations on such topics as wild edibles, wolves and scat identification. The Village Green could not have enriched the life of residents and visitors to the area with such a diverse array of events and enriching opportunities without the financial support of individual donors. Many people do not realize that it’s not a government funded park. The Village Green is a nonprofit organization that operates and improves the park to preserve the legacy and lifestyle of Cashiers. The outside garden has many flowers designed to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Take a stroll down the pathway through the lush foliage where you’ll find a private dock and canoe (available for your use). Good fishing for bluegills and bass on this peaceful lake (no motorized vehicles allowed). For a small fee, guests have access to the many Sapphire Valley Resort amenities (golf, tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, minigolf, pool table, ping-pong, a fitness center and game room) and access to 55+ acre Fairfield Lake (swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and motorized boating or sailing).
