About The Village Green I
n 1992, with the vision of one and the hard work of many, the center of Cashiers was saved from becoming the site of a hotel chain. Three area residents purchased the property and donated it to a charitable 501c3 organization to preserve the land for the community. The Village Green was established with the mission to preserve and enhance the land for civic, spiritual, academic, recreational and cultural activities. Now, 25 years later, The Village Green continues to be a park for the people. The founders set out to create a free, public space that would maintain the mountain lifestyle unique to Cashiers. Another community leader, William Pulley, donated a large tract of land in honor of his granddaughter in 1994. Kara Leigh Pulley Park, located in the center of The Village Green, has small picnic shelters and a larger picnic pavilion used for birthday parties and other special occasion gatherings. In 20 02, the expansive children’s playground known as the Village Play was designed by area youth and and constructed by more than 150 community volunteers. The Village Green Commons,

the venue for Groovin’ On the Green, was created as an additional rustic, open-air structure for multiple uses. The most recent addition to the park is the beautiful, therapeutic Hayes Fairchild Memorial Garden tucked along the central pathway. Since that original acquisition 25 years ago, The Village Green has grown to encompass meandering walking paths, a wetlands boardwalk, exceptional sculpture, and many beautiful gardens. The Village Green is enjoyed by thousands of visitors and home to many large community events every year. Visitors in 2018 will notice several improvements to The Village Green. The picnic shelter near the Village Play was redesigned and renovated thanks to a grant from the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley. A labyrinth for reflection and meditation was installed in the woodland Glades area; this was funded by an outreach grant from Church of the Good Shepherd. AED devices were purchased towards enhanced park safety through the generous resources of donor-advised fund distributions from Cedar Creek Racquet Club and Wade Hampton Golf Club. Finally, the aging and deteriorating roof on the Gazebo was replaced this winter thanks to the gener-
osity of individual donors and the fundraising efforts of the Joy Garden Tour last summer. The Village Green also recently completed a project to address the critical need for parking. The Green acquired additional and developed contiguous property to provide a new parking lot with 50-plus spaces. This free parking will address the needs of visitors who enjoy the park, and will no doubt serve to create additional commercial benefits for Cashiers businesses. The Village Green continues its commitment to grow and serve the community. It’s identified the need for expanded indoor public gathering space for cultural events and community activities. We envision this facility as transformational by: • Elevating civic responsibility and public engagement around important community issues as the necessary gathering space for forums, meetings and other civic oriented presentations; • Strengthening the economic and physical health of the community as the location for job fairs and health screenings for area residents;
• Expanding educational opportunities for children and their families as the area’s largest classroom for a variety of subject matter; • Enriching a shared spiritual life through inspirational programs and community wide services; • Enhancing the lifestyle of the community through increased exposure to the arts bridging diverse populations and demographics through these additional programs and services; Site preparations have been under way during the winter months in anticipation of construction commencing in Spring. The Village Green persists and endeavors to advance the mission to preserve the legacy of Cashiers and enhance the lifestyle of its residents and visitors. There’s a place for everyone to enjoy this community park and an opportunity for everyone to contribute. Check out the great selection of fresh, locally grown vegetables, herbs, honey and fruit. Fill your basket with naturally raised meat and dairy items, fresh eggs, jams, pickles, freshly baked bread, and delicious granola. Set your table with flowers fresh cut that morning or plant your entryway with locally grown perennials. Sample the delicious dips and spreads to serve at your next party. Art for a Cause Saturday - Sunday, May 26 - 27 & September 1 - 2 | 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

he Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley presents Art for a Cause, the Arts & Crafts Fairs that take place in the Spring over Memorial Day weekend and in the Fall over Labor Day weekend. Both events showcase some of the finest arts and craftspeople in the Southeast. Art for a Cause brings these talented and skilled artisans to this bi-annual event to raise money for the underserved in the community. On display is work from more than 90 of the finest artisans from throughout the Southeast. From unique ironwork and woodcraft to hand-thrown pottery, hand-stitched textiles and homemade cakes, pies, jellies and jams, there’s something to please every artistic palate and tempt even the most finicky of tastes. Members of the Cashiers Rotary will also show off their culinary skills at the refreshment booth, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers and more to keep you fueled up

as you hunt for the perfect piece to add to your collection. Entrance to the Cashiers Rotary Arts and Crafts Shows is free to attend, but all donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. A portion of the proceeds from the Spring show and 100 percent of the proceeds raised during the Fall show go to benefit the Cashiers Rotary Club Charities Fund, which supports area charities, schools and non-profit organizations that perform good works and advocate on behalf of the under-served and underprivileged within the community. To date, the club has distributed more than $1 million and, with your help, hopes to expand the reach even further. n many ways, The Village Green is Cashiers’ largest outdoor classroom. Education is one of the essential elements of our mission, and conservation is one of our primary values. The Village Nature Series is an educational program that promotes conservation in collaboration with the HighlandsCashiers Land Trust. The series of presentations highlights distinct cultural and natural features of the area. Past pro-

grams have introduced such subject matter as raptors, moss gardening, wolves, foraging, native plants, and edible insects. This two-day festival showcases ceramic art June 30 and July 1 at The Village Green in Cashiers. Celebrate the rich pottery heritage of the region while shopping for original works created by 16 of the best professional potters from the South. Pots On the Green features a wide variety of style and expression − traditional form, modernist elegance, funky glazing, rough stoneware, hand-carved earthenware, refined drawing, innovative forms, whimsical figures and more! tive items and sculpture. Talk with the artists, learn their unique techniques and take home your favorites. Fireworks Extravaganza Wednesday, July 4 | 6:30 P.M.

ore than 1,0 0 0 brilliant and colorful fireworks light up the night during Cashiers’ spectacular familyfriendly Fourth of July celebration. Fireworks Extravaganza On the Green is an all-American celebration of Independence Day, where residents and visitors dine, play and dance the night away. The evening begins at 6:30 P.M. with a concert by the popular rhythm and blues band Continental Divide. This group, featuring award-winning vocalist Gene Pharr, returns to perform a variety of Motown, Beach, Soul and Classic Oldies music. Bring a chair or a blanket to sit on. Picnics and coolers are welcome, although food and beverage vendors will be on site. Please, no pets at this event. All eyes will turn to the sky for the colossal fireworks show, set to begin shortly after dark. The breathtaking display lasts about 30 minutes and is accompanied by patriotic music. Red, white and blue bursts, salutes and flares along with other brightly colored fireworks will sure to have everyone “oohing” and “aahing.” Admission is free, however donations to a community fireworks fund will be col-

lected at The Village Green to help with the cost of the event. Many small towns have been forced to eliminate fireworks because of the expense of putting on a pyrotechnic display. The Village Green believes it is important to celebrate America’s birthday and works to preserve this important tradition for the Cashiers community. Plein Air Festival Tuesday - Saturday, July 17 - 21

his summer is the Fifth Biennial Cashiers Plein Air Festival, an art competition and sale featuring nationally-acclaimed painters from throughout the country. More than 20 invitational artists will set up their easels to capture the beauty of the North Carolina Mountains July 17-21. Their original art is displayed for viewing and sale at a pop-up art gallery at The Village Green Commons in Cashiers. The artists’ medium, technique and subject matter are varied, but every canvas highlights the unique landscape and lifestyle of the area. Special events, ticketed and open to the public, showcase their art. Six festival artists will present live demonstrations and offer insights into their method for painting. Palette Passes include all artist demonstrations under the Festival Grand Tent and the Collector’s Preview Reception in the Festival Gallery on July 18. Palette Passes are $75 each by July 1 (and $100 after). Artists compete for awards, which are presented at the Palette to Palate Affair, a summer soiree on July 20 at The Village Green. Guests mingle with the festival artists while enjoying live jazz music, cocktails, delectable hors d’oeuvres and desserts with an artful flair.

Plein air is French for “open air.” Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became important to a realist art movement in Barbizon, France. About the same time, an unexpected development changed the course of painting and the art world. This innovation was a flexible metal storage tube. Today it’s hard to imagine life without a tube of toothpaste! This invention revolutionized both the art of tooth brushing and the art of oil painting. The paint tube allowed the artists to assemble a small, portable painting kit to create canvases outdoors. French Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissaro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir did much of their work en plein air. It was the first time in history that artists went out to study the landscape on location; to observe the effects of light on the forms in space under unique conditions. Painting en plein air forever changed how artists see the world. Plans began for Cashiers Plein Air Festival in 2008. The idea originated from members of

the The Village Green Board of Directors. Mary Palmer Dargan, Trish Warriner and Karen Weihs launched the first festival of professional Plein Air artists in 2010 to compete and sell works created live during a concentrated time for the community to enjoy. The event was modeled after other proven Plein Air art festivals sweeping our nation. Fundraising and art-focused education for The Village Green is the intent of this event. This festival continues to be firmly established as a premier art event for the Southeast. Cashiers Plein Air Festival is a biennial fundraiser to enhance The Village Green. Blessing of the Animals Saturday, September 29 | 11:00 A.M.

he Blessing of the Animals is a tradition in the Cashiers community started by the Church of the Good Shepherd. Cashiers-area churches will observe this annual event at 11 A.M. on Saturday, September 29, at The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road. Bring a chair to this gathering with animals that features music and prayer in celebration of all God’s creatures great and small. Each animal receives a special blessing. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society. Besides a monetary gift, items like blankets, rugs, towels, Milk Bones, unscented cat litter and canned dog and cat food

are useful as well as always needed. The Village Green will provide water and trash cans for the animals, which must be leashed or otherwise secured and under their owners’ control at all times. The tradition of animal or pet blessings is in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all of God’s creatures. ou may be sad to see summer go, but the crisp, cool fall air brings lots of fun. The change of seasons also brings thousands of “leaf peepers� to look at the brilliant fall foliage. The Cashiers Valley Leaf Festival has been an annual attraction for 10 years to celebrate the beginning of autumn in the Western North Carolina mountains. The three-day festival will be October 5, 6 and 7 this year. Shop for unique handcrafted treasures

Music, dancing, games and a few tricks along with some treats will create a ghoulishly good time for the community. Goblins In the Green is organized and presented in partnership by the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and The Village Green, along with many area merchants who support the event. This is a free event, open to the public for everyone’s enjoyment.

Gobble on the Green

he turkey, cornbread dressing, pumpkin pie, football and family time‌so many reasons to love Thanksgiving! Did we mention pie? Each family has its own activities and traditions to look forward to the holiday. This year The Village Green is adding to that offering with a 5K Run/Walk turkey trot, Gobble On the Green. The Thanksgiving Day run will begin at 9 A.M. Thursday, November 22 at The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road. The Village Green is calling all artists to help design the first annual Gobble On the Green t-shirt. Designs will be accepted beginning May 1 and must be submitted by no later than July 1. announced at the September 1 Groovin’ On the Green. Early bird registration for Gobble On the Green is $25 including a race t-shirt through November 10. Late registration, including race day, is $30 with a t-shirt while supplies last. A one-mile Fun Run for children ages 5-10 years begins at 9:30 A.M. The Fun Run is free with registration with t-shirts purchased separately. In addition to age group awards, prizes will be given for the Most Creative and Holiday Festive race attire. ou may have seen The Village Green in bloom in summer. Have you seen it glow in the winter? Join us for Christmas On the Green, Cashiers’ favorite holiday tradition. The 13-acre park in the heart of Cashiers features thousands of twinkling lights. The Village Green will make spirits merry and bright. Christmas On the Green kicks off the holiday season with an afternoon and evening of festivities Friday, November 23. Santa and Mrs Claus will visit with children of all ages from 2:00 until 5:00 P.M. at the Gazebo of The Village Green at the Crossroads of Highways 64 and 107. Bring your wishes and a camera for a photo with the jolly couple.

The evening continues with holiday music for the Cashiers Christmas Tree Lighting celebration from 5:00 until 6:00 P.M. “Christmas On the Green” will also feature warm drinks and tasty treats, including s’more-making around The Village Green fire pit. The magic holiday sparkle happens when the switch is flipped to illuminate the beautiful 65-foot spruce in the center of Cashiers. Parking is available at the entrance near the Gazebo, off of Highway 64 East, and at the entrance to Village Commons on Frank Allen Road in Cashiers. Look no further than The Village Green, the lovely 13-plus-acre park in the heart of Cashiers! The outdoor rustic feeling and the peaceful natural surroundings make it a picture perfect spot for celebrations of all sizes. The Village Green has three open air venues that offer unique vistas and experiences perfect for an unforgettable event. The Gazebo is a rustic structure with a large lawn area at the crossroads that may be used for various events, concerts and private functions. The Village Green Commons is the large, open air, multi-use venue on Frank Allen Road that’s popular for weddings and other large special events. with stacked stone seating under a vine covered arbor. During spring and summer, The Village Green blossoms with native azalea, rhododendron and lupine, as well as colorful hydrangeas, perennials and annuals. The spectacular dahlia garden blooms into early fall. The beauty of The Village Green inspires creativity to events memorable and unique. “Everyone loves a party,” says Self. “What better place to celebrate than in the delightful green heart of Cashiers!” The Village Green is a public park that is privately conserved and maintained by a nonprofit organization.
