Grandparents and Special Friends Day Friday, April 11, 2008

This year we will only have one Grandparents/Special Friends Day and it will include all students (grades PS—8th). Parking on campus that day will be limited to handicapped parking by permit only. For your convenience, two shuttle buses will run from the former Mountain Brook Swim and Tennis Club to the campus. The first shuttle will begin at 8:00 a.m. As a reminder, invitations were mailed today, Monday, March 24th to all grandparents whose addresses we have on file from the Student Information Forms. If a grandparent’s address is not on file, and you would like an invitation sent to them, you will need to provide their contact information. Also, if your child’s grandparents are not able to attend please take a moment to let us know if there is someone special your child would like to invite in their place. Please email Peggy Darby (pdarby@highlandsschool.org) their contact information. Thank you for helping us to include all Grandparents and Special Friends in this wonderful event!

Optimist Club Oratorical Contest Winners Please join me in congratulating Houston Porter and Elizabeth Anne Brown for their success in the 2008 Optimist Club of Birmingham Oratorical Contest! Houston won first place in the boys’ competition, and Elizabeth Anne won second place in the girls’ competition! Both students received certificates of participation, medals, and monetary prizes for their accomplishments! Houston will compete in the zone level of the competition in April. Visitor from Burma Suh Twe Aung visited with middle school students on Friday, March 7. Suh, an employee of B.L. Harbert International, is from Burma, also known as Myanmar. Suh told the middle school students about Burma’s three seasons, “Hot, Rainy, and Cold,” her favorite foods, “Seafood, rice, and curry,” and painted some of the students’ faces with thanakha. The yellowish paste, thanakha, when applied to the face is said to cool, refresh, and protect the skin from the sun. Special thanks to Suh Twe Aung for visiting Highlands and to trustee, Billy Harbert, for arranging the informative and interesting visit.

Daisy Scout Troop #32

The kindergarten daisy scout troop #32 recently held a bake sale to benefit Highlands school library. The bake sale was held at Highlands school gymnasium during the basketball games. With all the yummy baked good items the scouts contributed they were able raise $60.00 to go toward purchasing new books and other items for the library. The girls learned about using resources wisely and were able to earn their green petal. Thanks to all the daisy scouts, parents and purchasers to the bake sale.
