Take Note

From the Desk of Kathryn Woodson Barr: Part of what I love about my job is the variety of each day. Last week, I was particularly struck while being a part of interesting and contrasting gatherings… -

Preschoolers gathered in my office for a story. At 11:30, they were hot, hungry, and wiggly, but I read aloud a funny rhyming book about feelings hoping, but not confident, that I would hold their attention. Indeed they did listen to every word, and when the last page read, “So, how do you feel?” enthusiastic voices began answering me in Chinese!

-

The entire eighth grade class along with several other Highlands middle school students gathered at Metropolitan Church of God last Wednesday afternoon to show support for their classmate, Leah Swinford. Leah’s brother, Joel, died in an automobile accident the Friday before Easter. Before and after the funeral, they encircled Leah, hugged her, and instinctively acted out the beauty of friendship, of community. Virtual hugs continue to surround the Swinfords as well, through a Facebook Group in memory of Joel that one of our own eighth graders formed. The last time I checked, the group had over 400 members.

-

Mr. Kizer and Mr. Garrett’s fifth graders gathered together to work on a project with middle school students from Connecticut last Friday. No one had to fly, email, or write a letter that morning. The students simply talked in front of a camera. Displayed on the interactive white board were our new “Connecticut Yankee” friends alongside our own Highlands smiles. Back and forth they discussed, brainstormed, and decided on a process for their project. The classroom grew bigger by over a thousand miles that morning.

The adults around Highlands School talk a lot about “community,” but the children are leading us as we refine and redefine what community is all about. Thank you for the children…

Third Graders Visit Ancient Egypt The third graders have been busy learning about ancient Egypt. We had our Egyptian food fair this week. We had flat bread, dates, figs, hummus, honey, and Tiger nut balls. We learned that the Egyptian often ate foods that could be found in the Nile River. The third graders will begin studying ancient China next. Pictured : Mary Frances Lembke Your Help is Requested Maxime Thompson, Kindergarten, has been selected as one of the top 10 finalists in the Hot Wheels Top Trick Video Challenge. He needs your votes! Go to http://www.hotwheels.com/coolstuff/ tricktracks_videochallenge.aspx to vote for his video each day between now and April 7. Maxime’s video is the first one in the second row. If he receives the most votes, he will receive $10,000 and will get his name on a Hot Wheels car! Good luck, Maxime!

Fourth Grade Hosts Annual World’s Fair After an excitement-filled week packed with creative energy, the fourth grade is ready for the Worlds’ Fair, and we’re looking forward to your visit. Fourth graders were asked to create a world in any place, in any time. For this world, they… • developed a history • wrote a story about how it was created or discovered • drew a map • formed a fossil • composed a national anthem for the recorder • invented a language • built a home (complete with a diagram of the area measurements) • created the food • invented a game. Many of the students went beyond these requirements, creating flags, menus, currency, constitutions, and newspapers.

Short Notes Congratulations to Jane and Tom Jenkins on the arrival of their granddaughter, Hollis Kimble Thompson. Hollis was born at 1:29 PM March 25th at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. She weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz, and was 20 inches long.

Highlands School Space Day Competition Please join Mr. Kizer in congratulating our participants in the 2008 Highlands School Space Day competition. This year Mr. Kizer developed our own local competition since the Space Day Foundation did not sponsor a nation-wide event. The winning team will enjoy a trip to the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center on Monday, May 5, 2008. First place team: Red Giants Andrew Bruno Eli Cohen Ben Goodman Colby Holman Wesley Madden Chris Morris Patrick O’Neal Jack Ullrich
