Dear Parents, Kindergarten students recently visited me to find out what a head of school does with her time. As difficult as it is to say in a minute or less what I do, I told them that a huge part of what I do is talk and write. Hardly a quarter hour goes by when I do not write emails or letters or speak with people in person or on the phone. I told them that the biggest piece of my job is communication. As someone who values and strives for excellent communication, I am proud to share with you our newly designed website at http://www.highlandsschool.org . I hope you will enjoy and appreciate its modern and flexible design and will find the information within it useful to you. The part that you will see this month is available for anyone to view. We are putting the finishing touches on the parts that will require a login, and we expect that this part of the website will be launched by October 1, 2008. More information will come to you as we near completion. A special thank you goes to Tynley Baker who worked countless hours over the summer with our design team to create this website. Parents Troy Carroll , a computer whiz, and Trisha Crain, a photographer, also shared their talents. Enjoy this new tool as we continue to look for the very best ways to communicate, and as always, please let us know if you have questions or ideas.

Highlands Summer Camp offers Model Building This summer the “Beginning Model Building” camp session offered during Highlands Summer Camp program set forth a challenge to seven second to fourth graders. They were given fifteen hours to complete a Humvee. The summer camp session was taught by IPMS member Ed Sims with assistance from fellow IPMS members, Phil Hale and Will Nichols. Each camper was given the choice of building either a Tamiya or a Italeri Humvee in 1/48 scale. The class worked furiously for five straight days, three hours a day. The kids excelled in the challenge! Along the way, they learned about choosing the right kind of glues and paints, weathering with washes and drybrushing, how to make realistic bases, attaching stowage, and a host of other skills.
