Surrender of General Burgoyne, John Trumbull

1966 Amphicar Model 770

GreatGarages

The Saratoga Auto Museum in New York State: Victory for Classics by David M. Brown ‘I have the Satisfaction to present Your Excellency with the Convention of Saratoga, By which His Excellency Lieutenant General Burgoyne, has Surrendered Himself & his whole Army into my Hands.” –Maj. General Horatio Gates to the president of Congress, October 18, 1777

A day before, Gates had taken, in fashion, the sword of ‘Gentleman John’ Burgoyne, accepting the surrender of his 5,700 regulars. More than just a morale-builder for the revolutionary Americans, as those at Princeton and Trenton had been within the past year, victory at Saratoga was a turningpoint battle in the War of Independence. Before he turned coat, Benedict Arnold helped secure the surrender that helped change the world. Victory could be had, despite earlier losses to the world’s most potent army. Saratoga meant the British could not split the fiery New England states from their fellow patriots to the south. And, France, fearing British power and sailing its own potent fleet, entered into a military alliance with the now

24

credible colonists. Six years later, a nation emerged with the Treaty of Paris. American composer Michael Torke recently composed “Unconquered” to celebrate the victory. Fourteen miles from the surrender site in Saratoga Springs, The Saratoga Automobile Museum maintains approximately 30 to 35 classic cars, most of these on loan from private collectors. The stable includes a 1936 Chevrolet 5-window NASCAR Modified Coupe; a 1985 Curb Racing/STP Pontiac NASCAR Racer; and an early 2000s Kurt Busch cut-away NASCAR. Opened June 1, 2002, the museum also owns ten cars, including a 1925 Ford Model TT Popcorn Wagon, purchased from the estate of Dottie Rich; a 1931 Pierce Arrow Dual Cowl Phaeton; and a 2009/2011 Dyson Racing Lola B09/86 American Le Mans Series Racer. Two were donated by founding trustees of the museum: a 1910 Maxwell Model AB Runabout, by Lewis Golub, and a 1931 Pierce Arrow Dual Cowl Phaeton, Wayne and Deborah Friehofer. A 1936 Ford Phaeton was donated by Candace Wier.

Unlike the Petersen, AACA, Gilmore, Nethercutt, LeMay, and other noted car museums, the Saratoga Auto Museum did not start with a significant personal collection, explains Holly Hulfish, its curator. Rather, it was the realization of a vision of Carroll Cook, the founding executive director. “Carroll kept sharing his dream and passion for a museum until he met the individuals who caught his dream and made it come to life,” she says. The museum is in Saratoga State Park, once used by Native Americans for hunting and the mineral springs, which became popular in the 19th century for therapeutic baths. The park became a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Designed by celebrated architect Dwight James Baum (1886–1939) in 1935, the Georgian Revivalstyle museum building was once a bottling plant for “curative” Saratoga Water. After 1971, when the state of New York corked the water business, the building was leased by a private company, Waters of Saratoga Springs Inc., but the company ran dry less than a year later. The building was relegated to a storage facility until the museum acquired it in 2000. The motto of the city in magnificent upper New York State is “Health, History, and Horses.” Saratoga Springs Race Track, the fourth oldest such venue in the United States, had its first thoroughbred meet just a month after the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Says Darryl Leggieri, executive director of Discover Saratoga, “With attractions including naturally carbonated mineral springs, thoroughbred horse racing and polo, 15 golf courses around the county, 10 historic museums, a performing arts center and an award-winning downtown with restaurants,

bistros and pubs, it’s no wonder Saratoga Springs, ‘Spa City,’ is a nationally recognized destination.”

Cars: Ford, Lindberg, Vanderbilt, Whitney and More When you’re destined to Saratoga Springs for health, history or horses, add horsepower and stay a while at the museum. Hosting this visit is Hulfish and the executive director, Carly T. Connors. •1928 Franklin Airman Series 12 Sports Sedan –– This car has been on loan from The Henry Ford Museum since the Saratoga museum opened. Formerly owned by Charles A. Lindbergh (1902– 1974), the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, it is one of the first production models of this series for the H. H. Franklin Manufacturing, which built cars in nearby Syracuse, New York, from 1902 until 1934. Given to Lindberg by the H.H. Franklin Company, the famous aviator used it extensively, even courting his wife, the former Anne Morrow, with it. In 1933, he retired the classic. Hearing that Henry Ford wanted a Franklin for his museum, Lindbergh offered to donate his car. “Completely in character, in August 1940 he drove the Franklin from his home in Englewood, New Jersey, overnight to Detroit where he presented it in person,” Hulfish says. •1966 Amphicar Model 770 – Donated by his widow, former actress Mary Lou Whitney, this car was cherished by Cornelius ‘Sonny’ Vanderbilt Whitney (1899–1992), who often took his wife and children fishing in the surrounding Adirondacks.

His ‘Cady Hill’ estate was near the Saratoga Race Track, where his horses competed. He frequently entered them in Triple Crown races. “Stories are told how he would wait for heads to turn as he did the unexpected, at least for a normal car, and drive it into the water of Oyster Bay, in Long Island,” she says. “Sounds, amidst shouts of ‘Don't go in there!’ came from the shore. He then enjoyed the giggles of realization as it floated safely on the waves.” The car even puzzled the Coast Guard patrolling the waters, which didn’t know quite what it was: car or boat? “Sonny made sure it was licensed for the road and certified for the sea and thoroughly enjoyed the vehicle throughout his life,” she adds. •1909 Paterson Motor Buggy – Madelon Herzog was the daughter of Mary Madelon Paterson, one of William A. Paterson’s three children. A former carriage maker, Paterson founded the W.A. Paterson Co. in Flint, Michigan, producing cars from 1909 until 1923. The Paterson Office Building remains in service there. Madelon purchased this motor buggy, believed to be #23 of the 64 built, at an estate auction, in Tipp City, Ohio, in the late 1980s. The two-cylinder air-cooled car features a planetary transmission with dual-chain drive and solid rubber tires. “After seeing an ad for the auction in a magazine, Madelon took a bus to Ohio, determined to return with her grandfather's creation,” Hulfish notes. “By endearing herself to the keepers of the estate, she was extended credit and was successful in bringing the car home.” Her children cared for the vehicle and donated it to the museum.

•2009/2011 Dyson Racing Lola B09/86 American LeMans Series Racer – Campaigned by the Dyson Racing Team and donated by the Dyson family, this prototype racer scored four wins and two championships during three seasons in the American Le Mans Series. This car and its stablemate scored LMP2-class victories at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut and the Road Atlanta Petit Le Mans in 2009 and won overall in 2010 at the MidOhio Sports Car Course. In 2011, the Dyson team posted overall race wins at both Lime Rock Park and the Grand Prix of Baltimore with drivers Chris Dyson and Guy Smith claiming the series driving championship as well. Dyson Racing also won the team championship for the series along with claiming Michelin Green X Challenge honors for energy efficiency and the development of isobutanol fuel. The racer is capable of speeds exceeding 200 mph and incorporates aluminum water and oil radiators, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, carbon-fiber disc brakes and pads and Michelin tires on forged magnesium wheels. Loaded with 80 liters of fuel and 10 liters of oil in the dry sump system, the Lola weighs approximately 1,800 pounds. •Maserati V-8 – ‘Poison Lil’ –– On loan courtesy of Valerie Clark, this Maserati has a long competition pedigree, first internationally in the Grand Prix circuit, then the Vanderbilt Cups of 1936–37, the Indianapolis 500 of 1938–39 and Watkins Glen from 1948–1955. One of the cars constructed and raced on behalf of the factory by Scuderia Subalpine on the 1935 Grand Prix circuit, this one’s only

international win was in 1936, driven by Philippe Etancelin at the Pau Grand Prix. After attempts at the Indianapolis 500, the owners dismantled and boxed the car, which was purchased by George Weaver after World War II. He reassembled and raced it at the first Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Race, held in October 1948 at Watkins Glen. Weaver, holder of SCCA competition license #1 and an Automobile Racing Club of American (ARCA) member, had successfully raced the former Malcolm Campbell Daytona-record Austin before the war. Weaver named the Maserati “Poison Lil” after the Miller-powered sprint car built in 1932 by Californians Art Sparks and Paul Weirick; this car was next to it at the 1937 Vanderbilt Cup race. During Weaver’s long racing career, the Maserati was first on the opening lap at Watkins Glen seven times, and he won the Seneca Cup race in 1949 and 1951. “Long after any contemporary racecars were no longer racing,” Hulfish says, “George Weaver was still driving ‘Poison Lil.’” Admission to the Saratoga Auto Museum is free for members. Adults pay $8.50; students 17-plus (with ID), $6; seniors 65-plus and active military, $6; children 6–16, $4; and children under 6 are admitted free. The writer thanks all of those who helped in this story, in particular, Carly Connor, Saratoga Auto Museum, Darryl Leggieri, Discover Saratoga (discoversaratoga.org), and Laura Trivers, communications specialist at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., for extending use rights for the John Trumbull painting of the Saratoga surrender. Concierge Auctions Portfolio Sale of Luxury Homes is January 31 at the Arizona Biltmore by David M. Brown Do you want to sell your luxury home quickly at your price? Are you looking to buy one but don’t have the time to visit these superlative properties throughout the world? Then, paddles up! Circle January 31 for the Valley of the Sun’s 4th-annual Portfolio edition of Concierge Auctions at the landmark Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, beginning 1 p.m. until approximately 4 p.m. Online bidding starts January 24 at conciergeauctions.com. Just two weeks prior, the Frank Lloyd Wrightinspired hotel hosts the RM | Sotheby’s 21st Annual Arizona Auction for world-class collector cars January 16 and 17 as part of the annual Arizona Car Week in the Phoenix metropolitan area. “Wealthy owners sell the finest cars, art and antiques at auction with great results. Why not also the elite estate homes where these fabulous assets are enjoyed by their fortunate owners?” asks Frank Aazami, principal of the Private Client Group, Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty, Scottsdale. His 16-member PCG closes an average $200 million annually of luxury homes, $2 million and higher, in prized areas such as Paradise Valley and North Scottsdale featuring communities such as Silverleaf,

30

Highline Autos

Estancia, Desert Highlands and Desert Mountain. “These yearly auctions here in the Valley and across the globe are delivering more and more sales, which are benefitting both sellers and buyers,” adds Aazami, who is also a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Last year’s Phoenix auction posted four sales of luxury homes in the metropolitan area, two in Scottsdale and two in Paradise Valley, as well as others in similarly notable locales worldwide. The event attracted 50 bidders and resulted in more than $42 million in properties sold, including a record for the highest sale price in the past decade in Paradise Valley, says Nick Leonard, senior vice president of business development for Concierge Auctions. This year’s Biltmore Hotel auction includes two properties in Paradise Valley as well as in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, Azuma in the Bahamas and Marrakech, Morocco. “And,” Aazami notes, “we’re adding properties prior to the January 31 event.”

Sell and Buy Quickly and Well The traditional model for buying and selling high-end real estate –– through Multiple Listing Service –– is advantageous for many transactions

but not all. At the ultra-luxury level, closings at the seller’s price can take months because of the limited pool of buyers, even in the robust times such as now, Aazami says. The properties are carefully selected and are not distressed. Concierge accepts one of every 20 homes submitted. “The sellers are well capitalized and have chosen the auction method to sell within their timeframe,” he says. The hyper-luxury market is unique, too, in marketing. “Tools such as price reductions, advertising, videos and other exposure are often ineffective,” he explains. With the Concierge Auctions process, sellers control timing, terms (Reserve or No Reserve) and which real estate agent represents them; predictability, as they are provided with bid range, bidder list and pre-sale metrics; and quick liquidity, usually within 30 days of the winning bid. And, they gain global exposure through access to the company’s wide-reaching database. Buyers, in turn, conveniently gain access to the finest properties available worldwide. They pay a 12 percent fee on the high bid for the auction service and any transfer fees. All sales are “as-is,” without contingencies, so the buyer must be diligent. Sellers also set a “Buy Now” price, which allows a buyer to acquire the property without contingency prior to

32

the auction date. Real estate agents for the buyer and seller are compensated. New York City-based Concierge Auctions is a superlative tool in the luxury Realtor® belt, explains Aazami, an Agent Advisory Board Member for Concierge, who has a decade of experience offering his clients the auction option to sell their homes quickly. The company also has a Marketing Campus office in Austin, Texas. Founded in 2008 in Sarasota, Florida, Concierge curates a premium worldwide portfolio, with sales exceeding $2 billion. In 2019, the company posted its best year, increasing its worldwide reach to 40 U.S. states and territories and 28 countries; the final auction of the year in New York City attracted almost 80 bidders competing for homes in seven states and eight countries. “With a comprehensive marketing strategy, an industry-leading database with global reach, and a digital bidding platform, Concierge Auctions encourages competition from around the world in a competitive sales environment,” Leonard says, adding that, on average, a luxury property sale by Concierge Auctions generates 200 to 400 worldwide inquiries, 25 to 50 showings and three to five qualified bidders. For the January 31 auction at the Biltmore

Hotel, bidders may participate in person, proxy or by phone from anywhere in the world. Aazami notes that a majority of the auctions take place on ConciergeAuctions.com or the Concierge Auctions app, available on both Apple and Android devices. “Bidders can work with dedicated Concierge Auctions representatives on the phone,” Aazami says. “They can assist in answering any questions on the properties or the auction platform.”

A Duo of Paradise Valley Homes The two premier Paradise Valley properties are quickly accessible to the restaurants, boutique shops, art galleries and cultural assets of Scottsdale and Phoenix; Sky Harbor International Airport is less than a half hour south. The Phoenix area has approximately 200 golf courses, and within minutes are hiking and biking at Echo Canyon, Camelback Mountain and the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. So, too, is the town’s invitation-only country club. At 7202 North Clearwater Parkway, the 7,043square-foot home is on just more than an acre, with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The desertmountain-view home will satisfy multiple needs. For the entertainer, lounges, dens, living rooms and wet bars will welcome admiring guests. The athlete has a gym and pool. And, a family will enjoy game rooms, a breakfast nook and multiple fireplaces. Outside is a hot tub and a heated pool. A reserve is in place at $2.095 million, and online bidding begins January 29 at 6 p.m. The stellar home is open Friday through Sunday prior to the

auction, 1–4 p.m. MST and by appointment. Nearby is 6060 North Paradise View Drive, a Tuscan-style villa with 7,666 square feet on just over an acre of hillside privacy and unobstructed views. The home includes five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and a half bathroom and a four-car garage. Finishes and features include groin, vaulted, beamed and tray ceilings, oversized arched windows and doorways and skylights. The master sanctuary features hardwood floors, fireplace and jetted spa bath. Outdoors is an infinity-edge pool, hot tub and sports court. The property is offered at No Reserve, and bidding begins Jan 28, 2 p.m. EST. Interested buyers may see the home by appointment. “These two Paradise Valley properties in 85253, one of the country’s most sought-after zipcodes, will be offered with others of similar echelon throughout the world,” Aazami says. “We look forward to hosting you January 31 at the Biltmore or hearing from you by phone or other means. This is a unique opportunity that may provide you with the perfect way to quickly sell your home or acquire one anywhere.” To register as a bidder (which includes a bank reference letter and a refundable deposit), call 212.202.2940, email inquiries@conciergeauctions.com or click on the property page at the “Register to Bid” button, ConciergeAuctions.com. story by David M. Brown The annual AZ Jet Center Event will be held Wednesday evening, January 15, 5–9 p.m., at the AeroCare Air Ambulance Service hangar, 15827 North 80th Street, #400, at the Scottsdale Airpark. Produced by the Jet Center Foundation, a 501c3 Arizona charity, the lifestyle celebration will feature race cars and exotics, jets, live music, fine artists, gourmet food, fine wines and spirits and fashion by Kettey’s International Boutique of Scottsdale. A VIP reception for vehicle exhibitors and event partners is at 4–5 p.m. On Sunday, January 12, the Jet Center Sunday Drive will include a breakfast and morning show-style interview with automotive personalities including Barry Meguiar and Lyn St. James, followed by a route along Arizona back roads, ending up at a local winery for a wine tasting and lunch. Two of the jets which will displayed on Wednesday are from the venue host, AeroCare Air Ambulance Service, and the event’s primary beneficiary, Wings of Humanity, a nonprofit which provides free air ambulance services for children without insurance or means to pay (wingsofhumanity.org). AeroCare is a nationwide full-medical-staffed air ambulance company operating a fleet of planes retrofitted for air ambulance transport. “We are excited to showcase our complimentary services with Wings of Humanity and help them raise funds to support their nonprofit service as they save children’s lives –– one flight at a time,” says Eric Heetland, chief flight medic/AZ base manager of AeroCare.

The event is also supporting Sol Dog Lodge, “for all dogs and the people who love them” (soldoglodge.com). The boarding and training facility in Marana will expand its Hearts at Ease program for pets whose owners are in a temporary distress situation and Arizona Heartfelt Hounds, a program that gives dogs and people a new “leash on life” by matching people with disabilities with a service, emotional-support or residential therapy dog. In addition, Donate Life Arizona (donatelifeaz.org) will also be represented. “Family members of the Jet Center Foundation have been touched by this network, with two people alive today because of being recipients of donated organs in just the last year,” says Katrina Couch, president of the Jet Center Foundation. Limited partnership opportunities to support these causes are available; please contact Jet Center Events for inquiries. Event sponsors include Meguiar’s, Highline Autos, The Toy Barn, Authentic Motorcars, Carbonadi, Desert Rock Winery, The Gold Club at Devils Tower, Private Asset Management Inc., Hydeaway Cigar Club, Concours in the Hills, America’s Automotive Trust, and many others. The AZ Jet Center Event is limited to 500 attendees. BARRETT-JACKSON HOLDS 49TH SCOTTSDALE AUCTION JANUARY 11–19 story by David M. Brown The “Road to 50” begins January 11–19, 2020, when Barrett-Jackson holds its 49th Arizona auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale as part of a year-long journey toward its Golden Anniversary in January 2021. “What began as a grassroots community fundraiser for a local library has since evolved into an international brand,” says Craig Jackson, CEO and chairman of Scottsdale-based Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions. Established in 1971, Barrett-Jackson also produces annual auctions in Palm Beach, Florida; Mohegan Sun in Connecticut; and Las Vegas, Nevada. Highlighting the event are eight collections, led by 21 cars owned by the late actor and automotive aficionado, Paul Walker, star of the Fast and Furious movies. The group includes five 1995 BMW M3 Lightweights (Lots #1371, #1372, #1372.1, #1373, #1373.1) –– probably the first time a quintet of these has been made available for sale simultaneously. Representing the diversity of one of the finest No Reserve offerings in Scottsdale history, the BarrettJackson docket also includes rare muscle cars, contemporary limited-production supercars and fully documented high-end Resto-Mods. Among these are a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 COPO (Lot #1409), #59 of only 69 cars built for the 1969 model year with the legendary aluminum ZL1 427 big-block engine; and a 1967 Ford Shelby GT500 (Lot #1348), celebrating the great race driver and car entrepreneur, Carroll Shelby. Supercars include a 2019 McLaren Senna (Lot #1393), one of just 120 models to make it to the U.S.,

and a Verde Mantis-liveried 2017 Ford GT (Lot #1417) with just 538 actual miles. In addition to the Paul Walker cars, Barrett-Jackson will be offering seven other collections. Highlights include the supercars from Scott Thomas; 13 cars from the Vault Portfolio; and premier vehicles from Matt Furukawa. And, 300-plus sponsors and exhibitors and more than 100 food vendors will be on site. At the BarrettJackson Performance Track, attendees can book Hot Laps and Thrill Rides in cars from Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota. Each year Bonhams’ Scottsdale Auction makes headlines, and our patrons get to enjoy some of the finest motorcars from each era,” says Jakob Greisen, head of Bonhams U.S. Motoring Department. “The legendary B24S was a masterpiece of design and performance and rightly earned a place in the pantheon of the greatest sportscars of the mid-20th century,” he explains. This matching-numbers car is equipped with the desirable Nardi carburetion kit, benefits from a comprehensive and exceptional restoration and has successfully toured in the Mille Miglia Storica, Colorado Grand and French Tour Auto. The Fly Yellow Ferrari F512 M represents the end of the flat-12-cylinder model range and is one of just 75 produced –– the final evolution of the Berlinetta Boxer. “It offers thrilling power, superb handling and elegant ‘no frills’ Pininfarina styling,” Greisen says. 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast (Lot 131)

GOODING & COMPANY SCOTTSDALE AUCTIONS JANUARY 17 AND 18 story by David M. Brown Six European classics –– a 1932 Hispano-Suiza J12 Dual-Cowl Phaeton, four vintage Ferraris and a 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ –– are among the 100plus premium automobiles docketed for the Gooding & Company Scottsdale Auction, Friday, January 17, and Saturday, January 18. The auction begins at 11 a.m. each day in the white tent adjacent to Scottsdale Fashion Square, 4700 North Scottsdale Road at East Highland Avenue. The public preview is January 15–18, beginning at 9 a.m. The Sports Car Market Insider’s Seminar is Thursday, January 16, 9:30–11:30 a.m. With Pininfarina coachwork, the matching-numbers 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast (Chassis 6305) is Ferrari Classiche Certified and the only one originally finished in black. Revealed at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show in 1964, it’s powered by a five-liter V-12, with a top speed of about 170 mph. Only 99 examples of the 1967 330 GTS were produced 1966–1968. The recently restored Pininfarinastyled Giallo Fly-on-black-leather-interior convertible, Chassis #10111, is propelled by a four-liter V-12 with a five-speed transaxle and has four-wheel disc brakes. And, a 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, Chassis #05534, magnificent in Bianco Polo Park over black leather, has just under 21,000 miles from new. Fewer than 1,300 were built between 1972 and 1974. Featuring Zagato aluminum bodywork, the 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (Sprint Zagato), Chassis AR10126*00033*, is one of approximately 170 Series I (Round Tail) SZs built with a high-performance Veloce engine (Tipo 00120) and a 5-speed gearbox.

An outstanding American representative is a Tucker 48, one of 51. Chassis 1034 is one of 12 finished in Waltz Blue Metallic, the color, apparently, of Mrs. Tucker’s favorite dress. Debuting in Chicago in 1947, Preston Tucker’s “Car of Tomorrow” was aerodynamically designed with a rear engine, pop-out shatterproof windshield panels, a front crash compartment below a padded dash and the signature “cyclops eye” headlight. This unrestored, well-documented Tucker 48, assembled in the factory, has just 6,200 miles since new. “Preston Tucker’s foray into the automotive industry represents the most courageous attempt to disrupt the status quo of the Big Three, and this Tucker 48 is one of the finest examples that remain in existence,” says David Gooding, president and founder of Santa-Monica-based Gooding & Company. He notes that the company’s first London auction, “Passion of a Lifetime,” will be held at historic Somerset House April 1, 2020. Other vehicles include a 1993 Jaguar XJ220, Chassis SAJJEAEX8AX220618, and a Zagato-style 2003 Aston Martin DB AR, Chassis SCFAE62313K800025. The bidder registration of $200 includes a catalog, admission for two to the viewing and auction with two reserved seats, subject to availability. General admission is $40 and includes admission for one to the viewing and the auctions, or you can purchase a catalogue for $100, which includes two admission tickets for viewing and the auction. more soft tops represent the final year of the decade, a Buick Electra, DeSoto Firesweep and another “lettercar,” a Chrysler 300E. The Corvette, “America’s sports car,” is well represented. A “King of the Hill” 1968 Corvette L88 T-top coupe has the legendary 427-cid, 430-horse V-8 with the M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed and a period-correct drivetrain. Finally, a contemporary supercar, a 2012 Lexus LFA, one of 500 with just 2,556 miles, has a potent 4.8-liter V-10 and a 6-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission. “John’s collection of vehicles and his museum are just remarkable,” says Gary Bennett, general manager for Ritchie Bros.’ Collector Car Sector. “We are honored to offer his vehicles with No Reserve during our inaugural Scottsdale auction.” At least two cars will be sold for charity in Scottsdale, one supporting the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer and the second, a Jack Danielsbranded Indian Motorcycle, benefitting The Armed Forces YMCA Operation Ride Home. Admission for adults is $20, students with current ID and seniors 55+, $10. First responders, military with ID and children 12 and under are admitted free. On Saturday, adult admission is $25. RM | SOTHEBY ’S 21ST ANNUAL ARIZONA AUCTION IS JANUARY 16 & 17 story by David M. Brown Seven Cadillac V-16s from the distinguished collection of John D. Groendyke lead a docket of approximately 150 blue-chip automobiles into the 21st annual RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction at the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, January 16 and 17, 2020. Offered at Reserve and No Reserve, the docket comprises 100-plus cars including pre-war classics, contemporary supercars and significant sports and racing cars. The public may preview the cars Wednesday, January 15, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursday, January 16, and Friday, January 17, 9 a.m. to 5:30. The auction begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Widely respected in the collector car hobby, Groendyke has been a passionate collector since the early 1990s and has owned many American and European classics, and during the last decade has built a collection of the most significant Cadillac V-16 body styles and model years. The Cadillac V-16 was an engineering tour de force as the first production automobile equipped with a V-16 engine, during an era when even V-8s were exclusive to luxury manufacturers. The robust engine is also a work of art, said to be the first production car powerplant that was truly styled, with sleek design and minimal clutter. Buyers could choose one of 54 body styles from Cadillac’s coachbuilder, Fleetwood. The V-16s in Groendyke’s impeccably maintained collection: a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton by Fleetwood; 1931 Cadillac V-16 Seven-Passenger

The U.S.-delivery 330 GTS is one of the 99 produced, retains the original engine, a 300-bhp, 3,967cc single-overhead-camshaft V-12, and is Classiche certified. The U.S.-specification Carrera GT, black on black, was delivered new to Brazilian racing driver Antoine “Tony” Kanaan and shows just 4,055 kilometers. Streetside Classics

Streetside Classics: Sales, Service, Satisfaction written by David M. Brown Looking to buy a standout classic Z/28 Camaro? Streetside Classics usually has more than a score. Want to consign one? Streetside Classics wants to talk. “Same goes for Mopar, Shelby, Chevelles, trucks and more. Streetside always carries an enormous selection of all years, all equipment packages and all colors. You tell us what you want, and it’s more than likely we have it,” says Bob Mueller, vice president of Sales & Marketing. “If we don’t, we probably will soon.” Charlotte, North Carolina-based Streetside Classics has large indoor showrooms nationwide, with 1,600 collector cars in stock and ready to buy. The company takes consignments of all types of specialty vehicles, including American Muscle, Pre- and Postwar Classics, Late-Model Exotics, Offroad and 4x4s, European Sportscars and Hot Rods. “This makes Streetside almost like a factory for dream cars,” he adds. Minutes from most of the January auctions is the company’s Valley location at the U.S. 60 Freeway and Mesa Drive, 614 East Auto Center Drive, Suite 10. The 53,000-square-foot showroom showcases

260 cars. “Stop by, and one of our associates will take you for a complimentary tour,” Mueller says. An experienced, customer-centric staff has hundreds of combined years of expertise and is known for its laid-back approach. “We are regular recipients of prestigious customer service awards around the business, and that’s something we are very proud of,” he says. CEO Donna Robbins opened the first showroom in Charlotte in 2008 and has led Streetside Classics to sales figures that are among the best in the collector car industry, Mueller explains. In 2019, the company posted its best year, selling 2,700 vehicles for $81 million. Because of these upward trends, Streetside is looking at several U.S. markets to open a seventh location in 2020 or 2021. Much of the company success derives from the relationships formed with buyers and sellers worldwide as well as with banks and lenders, providing you multiple options to buy. Mueller says, “We’ve become known as the ‘Nation’s #1 Consignment Dealer’ because we provide sellers and buyers alike with top-flight customer service throughout the process, and our per-location sales are substantially

higher than any of our competitors.” Customer service has also driven company success. As a consignor, Streetside Classics makes the process easy for you, including initial evaluation, pre-marketing and presentation. “Your car is marketed in a proven and professional manner, published to outlets both in house and via our marketing and media partners across the globe,” he says. All six showrooms have won “Customer Satisfaction Awards” from Dealer Rater. “This puts each of our locations in the top percentile of U.S. car dealers who have the most positive reviews and the highest customer service based on both buyer and consignor feedback,” he says. Equally important is expertise in shipping and logistics. “We make shipping your new car to your door easier than ever,” Mueller explains. Streetside is also participating in its communities with “Caffeine & Classics” events (the company’s take on “Cars & Coffee”), held in the morning on the last Saturday of the month. In the Valley, it takes place at the Phoenix/Mesa showroom, where it will continue in 2020. “We had several months at many

locations where 100–200 vehicles attended, and we had huge crowds,” he says. “These are now becoming major/staple events here in the Valley and elsewhere.” Let Streetside Classics handle your sale. “This eliminates you from having to take pictures, write descriptions or hire somebody to take pictures and write descriptions, place countless ads, uploading things to the internet, dealing with endless questions from fake buyers online and then dealing with tire-kickers coming to your house or business,” Mueller says. “Then, once you sell on your own, you often have to deal with payment arrangements or wait for payment. We remove the hassles, simplify the process and make it easy. “Streetside gets it seen, then we get it sold!” For more information, see streetsideclassics.com or call, Arizona phone number, 480.926.1344, National, 866.542.8392.
