Lane Motor Museum: Unique Vehicles in the Land of The Grand Ole Opry by David M. Brown Come barn dance in Nashville, Tennessee, the home of country music and the Grand Ole Opry. While here, visit a grand automotive barn, the Lane Motor Museum, “Unique Cars A to Z.” The 510 cars and 73 motorcycles primarily consist of foreign cars and motorcycles, most from Europe of Asia. The earliest that’s not a replica is the 1918 Ford Model T, not yet on display, and the newest a 2017 smart ForTwo Brabus Cabrio, which Mercedes-Benz USA donated in 2017 (lanemotormuseum.org/collection/cars/item/smar t-fortwo-brabus-cabrio-2017). “Of these we generally display approximately 150 cars and 25 motorcycles at a time, while the rest remain in storage. We rotate about half of the cars on display each year,’” says Jeff Lane, founder and director, who began his collection in the mid-’90s and opened the museum in October 2003. “I believe our focus on European vehicles has allowed us to collect cars and motorcycles that are often rare to find in the U.S.,” he explains. “The museum has also sought out cars that are unique,

22

like propeller-powered cars, microcars and prototypes from independent makers.” Jeff recently chatted about a few of them. Helicron, Dymaxion and Gyro-X •1932 Helicron –– When this one-off propellerdriven car was discovered in a barn in France in 2000, little could be seen of it through the damage of the years. “It was completely rebuilt, but many of the mechanical components are original,” Lane explains. These include the frame, wire wheels, dashboard, steering wheel, steering gear, brake pedal, light switch, headlights and the type plate. The wood structure was sandblasted and treated, the steering gear rebuilt and the interior upholstered. As the car steers with the rear wheels, only those have springs, he says. The Helicron has a four-cylinder, air-cooled Citroën GS engine with the propeller coupled to the crankshaft. “The original engine was lost, but we know that is was a horizontally opposed twocylinder four stroke,” Lane notes.

1933 Dymaxion Replica

The car does not need a transmission. After passing the French safety inspection in 2000, it is approved for use there. •1933 Dymaxion Replica –– Visionary engineer Buckminster Fuller’s most famous automotive project is an acronym for DYnamic MAXimum TensION. This is a replica of the first of three cars that were produced by the 4D Dymaxion Corp. Car #1 was completed in five months in July 21, 1933, by Fuller and his crew, a projected funded by socialite Anna Biddle. Three months later, it was involved in an accident, killing two of the three occupants. The owner, Gulf Oil, continued to use the car for promotional purposes until a fire destroyed it in 1939. “This car was lost when it caught on fire and was destroyed,” Lane says, noting that he believes it was owned by Gary Beverage Company at the time. The second car was completed January 6, 1934, costing $7,688 to build (about $130,000 today); the other two cost approximately the same. Fuller kept car #2 as a demonstrator, and in May 1935, while Fuller was driving with his wife and daughter, the car overturned. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. This car, found in a back yard in Mesa, Arizona, is the only survivor; restored, it can be seen at the National Auto Museum in Reno, Nevada. The third car was finished in October 1934 and sold to the Stokowska family. It was displayed at the 1939 World’s Fair, and the car is believed to have been scrapped in the 1950s. “With more money and increased engineering talent, the Dymaxion could have been a viable car for the 1930s, though it’s unlikely it could have been

built for the masses because of its complexity,” Lane says, noting that Fuller gave up when the money ran out and moved on to his next futurist project. Completed in 2015 after eight-plus years, The Lane Museum’s version follows the first car’s design and powertrain with a mid-engine, front-wheeldrive Ford flathead 221-cubic-inch, 85-horse V-8 and a three-speed manual. “The claimed top speed was 120 mph, but, realistically, that’s probably 80 mph,” Lane says. He researched for six months, but unfortunately much of the information was incorrect. “Original owners could not be found or had passed on, so we searched for (and found) their children and grandchildren,” he recalls. “A few of them remember riding in the car as young children, but their knowledge of it was vague.” He persuaded his friend and race car engineer, Bob Griffith, to assist with chassis design. In turn, he found Chuck Savitske in Pennsylvania. Through 2007 and into early 2008, they built a running chassis. They test drove the chassis, then in the spring of 2008, Greg Coston in the museum’s restoration shop worked on the running chassis. In 2012, it was shipped to the Czech Republic for the wooden framework by Mirko Hrazdira. Finally, Czech Tatra specialist ECORRA skinned the outside, installed the interior and wired the vehicle before returning it completed to the museum. •1967 Gyro-X –– Alex Tremulis, Automobile Hall of Fame inductee, and gyroscope expert Thomas Summers created this two-wheeled gyroscopically stabilized prototype in 1967.

1967 Gyro-X

The men suggested that such a vehicle could be more efficient than its larger four-wheeled counterpart, Lane says. First, smaller and lighter meant it can use a smaller engine. The vehicle was reported to reach speeds of 125 mph using an 80-horse Mini Cooper S engine. And, the gyroscope’s stored kinetic energy would be harnessed as an additional power source in future gyro vehicles. In addition, aerodynamic design reduced wind resistance, and two tires reduced rolling resistance. Two wheels also made for greater maneuverability, similar to that of a motorcycle. The Gyro-X used a single 22-inch hydraulically driven gyroscope which stabilized the vehicle, avoiding tipping. In addition, because smaller vehicles require less operating width, more cars could fit on existing roads, doubling available lanes. Gyro Transport Systems in Northridge, California, built the one-off rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car for $750,000 (more than $5.6 million today) with a water-cooled 1275cc, transverse inline four cylinder and a four-speed manual. The futurist vehicle was first displayed at “The Wonderful World of Wheels,” during the 1967 New York International Auto Show. In September that year, the cover of Science and Mechanics magazine featured the car on the cover, describing it as “impossible to skid or flip.” Motor Trend’s June 1967 issue featured it as the Gyron I, and Road & Track also wrote about it in November that year. Although the Gyro-X was promoted as the future of vehicles, and there is a video of it running, witnesses recount that at high speeds, exceeding

24

70 mph, the vehicle was unstable. “It is possible the engineering was too complex and needed more development to perform as advertised,” Lane says. The end of the road was bankruptcy in 1970. Tatra, Citroen, MG-TF •1947 Tatra T-87 Saloon –– Tatra predecessor Nesselsdorf Works began crafting what became the finest horse-drawn carriages in Europe in the 1850s, then expanded into private rail cars in 1897 and cars through 1915, Lane says. From 1915–1920, the management ceased car production but continued to produce carriages and rail cars. In 1920 a new management team decided to focus on car production, phasing out carriages and rail cars. Around this time, the company became Tatra, named after the mountain range in eastern Czechoslovakia. The T-11, under the direction of Chief Engineer Hans Ledwinka, was a great success. Appearing in 1933, this was the first serially produced aerodynamic sedan. Hungarian engineer Paul Jaray helped shape the body to achieve a very aerodynamic body. With its 60-horse overhead-cam V-8 in the rear, the car was capable of 90 mph. Ledwinka thought his next car, the T-77, too large and heavy, so in 1936, the rear-engine, rearwheel drive T-87 appeared; with a 75-horse V-8, four-speed manual, a slightly smaller body, and weighing 700 pounds lighter, it could do 100 mph and handled better. The popular car was produced until 1950, with 3,056 units produced. The communists imprisoned Ledwinka for six years after the war for alleged collaboration with

the occupying Germans; on his release, he refused to work for Communist-run Tatra. “Tatra continued to produce cars until the mid-1990s, but the engineering masterpiece of the T-87 was never to be repeated,” Lane notes. The museum acquired this one in 2003. •1938 Citroën Berline 11 Gazogene –– Gasoline was scarce, expensive, and often unavailable during the German occupation of France in World War II. As a result, companies offered systems for a vehicle to be powered by alternative fuels including wood, coal, or charcoal. This front-engine, front-wheeldrive Andrè Citroën S.A. car was modified by the firm F.A.P. Elgazo Tarbes to run on coal. Reversible modifications were necessary to shift from gasoline to coal power. One of the two large cylindrical containers under the front fenders is filled with coal and ignited. In about 30 minutes, enough methane gas would be produced, condensed and filtered through the other cylinder to feed the special carburetor, making the engine run. After 30 miles, more coal is required. But this modification reduced horsepower from the four-cylinder by one-third and top speed from 65 mph to a maximum 45 mph. An estimated 65,000 conversions were done in France at the time, and only a few of these survive. This is one of 200 done on this model.

•MG TF 1500 –– Servicemen in the WWII European Theater returned home loving the sports car, including the MG T-series from MG Car Co. Ltd., England. Produced in 1954 and 1955, the 62-horse TF was a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder including a four-speed transmission. “It was basically a cosmetic modification of the TD but had a more modern look, with a more inclined radiator and built-in head lamps,” Lane explains. The low production of this model, 6,200 of the 1250cc and 3,400 of the 1500cc, makes it very attractive for collectors, he explains. As a child, Lane attended MG meets with his father, Gene, so he asked him for one in 1972 and received it as a Christmas present that year. But the car came in pieces and needed total restoration. “I spent the next four years restoring it, took my driver’s license test in it and drove it to many rallies in the ’70s and ’80s,” he recalls. “For the first couple of years, this was my regular transportation in the summer.” The Lane Motor Museum is open Thursday– Monday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed Tuesday and Wednesday) and closed New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. 1959 Lister-Jaguar Sports Racer (Lot 24)

BOnhAmS 8Th SCOTTSdALE AuCTiOn — JAnuARy 17 by David M. Brown The “star car,” a 1951 Maserati A6G 2000 Spider, and a “sleeper,” the former Team Cunningham 1959 Lister-Jaguar Sports Racer, highlight the docket for the Bonhams 8th Scottsdale Auction, Thursday, January 17, 2019, at the Westin-Kierland Resort & Spa, 6902 E. Greenway Parkway. Bonhams Scottsdale will feature 100-plus midcentury sporting cars from Italy, Germany and England and the United States. Among these is a 1934 Mercedes-Benz 500K Four-passenger Tourer, with coachwork by Mayfair Carriage Works Ltd., which will be sold at No Reserve. The auction, including automobilia, begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 17. Preview days are Tuesday and Wednesday, January 15 and 16, 9 a.m.−6 p.m. “Bonhams annual auction in Scottsdale, Arizona during Arizona Car Week is one of the most anticipated automotive sales of the year,” says Jakob Greisen, vice president of Bonhams U.S. Motoring Dept. “Attended by a global gathering of car aficionados, the event each year has seen world auction records made with models from Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche and others.” The very rare Maserati A6G 2000 Spider features Frua coachwork –– one of only three built and the only existing example. Expertly researched, documented and restored, this classic Italian masterwork has been shown at the world’s finest concours d’elegance, in particular, Pebble Beach,

The Quail and Villa d’Este. Bonhams estimates its final price at between $2,800,000 and $3,400,000. “It’s a pure, pristine and stunning example of one of the most sought after Italian bespoke opentop sports cars,” Greisen says. “Alluring, unique and a magnificent performer, it’s perfect for a run up the Riviera or the Pacific Coast Highway.” The “sleeper” is the svelte Lister-Jaguar, driven by Stirling Moss, Walt Hansgen, Bob Grossman and Ivor Bueb, and the SCCA C-Modified National Championship winner. Designed by Frank Costin, the Lister-Jaguar is one of the most original examples in existence and is estimated at $2 million to $2.6 million. “Rare, pedigreed, intelligent and victorious, this car is essentially what Jaguar would have turned the D-Type into if they had stayed in competition in the late 1950s,” Greisen says. “This is an exceptional motorcar worthy of the finest collections.” Entry to the auction is $20, which includes a gallery guide. For $100, guests receive a full catalog and admission for two. Bidder registration is $150, including two admissions. 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta (Lot 28)

GOOdinG & COmPAny SCOTTSdALE AuCTiOn –– JAnuARy 18 And 19 by David M. Brown A 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France and a stellar collection of post-war Mercedes-Benz motorcars lead the docket for the annual Gooding & Company Scottsdale Auction, Friday, January 18, and Saturday, January 19, at Scottsdale Fashion Square, 4700 North Scottsdale Road. The public preview is January 16 through January 19 at the auction site. The red-on tan Scaglietti-designed Ferrari, Chassis no. 1037 GT, is one of only 36 single-louvre TdFs. Retaining its original chassis, body, engine, gearbox and rear end, the Ferrari-Classiche-certified collectible has appeared in the Grand Prix of Venezuela, the Shell Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge and the Mille Miglia Storica. This stellar group Of M-Bs includes a quartet of the classic 300: a 1955 SL Gullwing, 1956 Sc Roadster 1957 SL Roadster and a 1963 SL Roadster. Sold new to the great Austrian conductor and car enthusiast Herbert von Karajan, the ’55 Gullwing was recently discovered in a Northern California garage and has never been presented at public auction. Confirmed by its factory build record, the car was ordered with the very rare Weissgrau (DB 158) livery-on-tan vinyl upholstery. The most collectible of the W188 series, the Dark Red over Cognac leather ’56 300 Sc Roadster is one of 53 built and features a disappearing fold flat top that tucks under a leather boot. A five-year concours restoration was completed in 1997 by specialist Don Mertz of Sun Valley, California.

With just three owners since 1963, the ’57 300 SL Roadster will appear in its original rare color combination of DB608 Elfenbein Ivory-over-green leather and just 44,000 miles on the odometer. The second owner completed a four-year restoration by marque expert Bill Richardson of Richardson Restoration & Machine Werks in Phoenix. And, the ’63 300 SL Roadster is one of only 210 examples of the final model year with the alloyblock engine and disc brakes. With 16,000 miles and just three owners since new, the white-over-redleather car has the optional Nardi steering wheel. “All of these Mercedes-Benz are exceptional cars. They represent the best of German engineering and ingenuity and are eligible for countless concours and club events,” says David Gooding, president and founder of the Santa Monica, California-based auction house. “This is especially true for the 300 SL, which was hugely advanced for its day. These models offer a robust and reliable drivetrain, which makes them easy to own and enjoy, especially in modern traffic.” The bidder registration of $200 includes a catalog, admission for two to the viewing and auction with two reserved seats, subject to availability. General admission is $40 and includes admission for one to the viewing and the auctions, or you can purchase a catalog for $100, which includes two admission tickets for viewing and the auction. Tested, it made 0–60 in 4.6 seconds and reached a top speed of 196 mph. Style cues include exposed headlights, redesigned oval grille and more unified five-slat rear section. This Rosso Corsa-over-Beige classic comes to its new owner with maintenance records for the past 20 years and the original 1995 Ferrari sales brochure. “I have driven this car for 20 years,” says the current owner of the ’95 Ferrari F512 M, “and will miss the excitement that comes from the sound of the 12-cylinder engine working together with the gated shifter.” For more information on the Phoenix auction, see rmsothebys.com, call 1.519.352.4575 or email, info@rmsothebys.com.

Flo’s Celebrates 21 Years of Superb Chinese and Asian Cuisine written by David M. Brown A New Year brings new dishes to Flo’s New Asian Cuisine, which has been serving Valleyites outstanding Asian cuisine for 21 years. Flo Chan and husband Dustin Wallace own and manage the three locations of Flo’s, assisted by Executive Chef Danny Lee and 140 employees. In December 2018, the three released a 21stanniversary menu, with menu and happy hour updates and other specials for the two restaurants in Scottsdale, the original, Flo’s McDowell Mountain, 15027 N. Thompson Peak Parkway, at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Flo’s Promenade, 16495 N Scottsdale Road, also at Frank Lloyd Wright

Boulevard, and the East Valley location, Flo’s Tempe, 788 E. Baseline Road, at Rural Road. “Flo’s blends traditional Asian fare with a dash of modern gastronomy — all with the fresh flavors of Chinese, Thai, Singapore, Vietnamese, Japanese and Indian cuisines,” says Dustin, a Nebraska native who studied Mandarin in college and spent two years in China afterwards. “We call the style, ‘tradition with a twist.’” More than 65 ingredients are combined. “From the moment we opened, Flo knew that inspiration doesn’t come out of a can; it comes from traveling, tasting and experiencing many examples of Asian

food,” Dustin adds. Born in Hong Kong and educated in Tennessee, she learned about the culinary traditions of China and other Asian countries from her parents and travels. Guests have enjoyed, for instance, the signature Hot & Sour Soup, influenced by the cuisine of Hubei province in central China. Dustin notes that Flo’s incorporates two vinegars, a thicker black variety and the more common white for a bouillabaisse richness. Always popular are the Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, “China meets Japan.” “Our chefs lightly bread them, then toss the wings with a spicy chili-salt blend,” he explains. This pairs beautifully with Chinese Tsing Tao Beer, crafted in the Pilsner tradition. All Flo’s locations have a full bar, including Japanese sake and Chinese beer. Wines work well, too. Try Isabella, an Italian red blend Dustin just added to the wine list, which pairs splendidly with select dishes. Also stop by for the new Wing and Tsing, 8-9:30 p.m. daily except holidays: A Chicken Wing appetizer and a tall bottle of Tsing Tao. And, the new Flo’s Happy Hour, 3–7 p.m. daily,

includes items such as a Noodle and Bottle: Lo Mein and a Bottle House Wine. Other popular entrées are the Thai Inspired Red Curry with Scallops, lemongrass coconut cream, galangal and East Coast sea scallops; the Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup, with beef tenderloin, bean sprouts, and chilies; and the Pine Nut Shrimp, with soy, fish sauces and red peppers. Among the new dishes are Seafood Guo Ba, shrimp, scallops, button mushrooms, oyster sauce and tofu on crackling rice, and the Crispy Honey Beef, with breaded beef tenderloin and an organic honey glaze. Also try the Pan-Fried Noodles, with Cantonese egg noodles, vegetables, rice wine and a soy garlic sauce. With the latter, you select your add-ins, such as chicken, pork, shrimp, vegetables or tofu. A new dessert is the Chocolate Mousse Cake. All dishes are MSG free, and customers can request gluten-free, low sodium and heart-healthy, he says, noting, “Everything is cooked fresh to order, and our servers always ask how spicy our guests want the food.” The three locations serve lunch, dinner and happy hour daily. On Saturday, brunch is noon to 3 p.m. For the 21st-anniversary menu and other details, see madebyflo.com. Streetside Classics

Streetside Classics: Sales, Service, Satisfaction written by David M. Brown Looking to buy a standout classic Z/28 Camaro? Streetside Classics has more than a score. Looking to consign one? Streetside Classics wants to talk. “Same goes for Mopar, Shelby, Chevelles, trucks and more. Streetside always carries an enormous selection of all years, all equipment packages and all colors. You tell us what you want, and it’s more than likely we have it,” says Bob Mueller, vice president of Sales & Marketing. “If we don’t, we probably will soon.” Charlotte, North Carolina-based Streetside Classics has large indoor showrooms nationwide, with 1,600 collector cars in stock and ready to buy. The company takes consignments of all types of specialty vehicles, including American Muscle, Pre- and Postwar Classics, Late-Model Exotics, Offroad and 4x4s, European Sportscars and Hot Rods. “This makes Streetside almost like a factory for dream cars,” he adds. The newest location is just off the U.S. 60 Freeway and Mesa Drive, about 15 minutes from the auctions in Scottsdale. The 53,000-square-foot showroom showcases 260 cars. “Stop by, and one

of our associates will take you for a complimentary tour,” Mueller says. An experienced, customer-centric staff has hundreds of combined years of expertise and is known for its laid-back approach. “We are regular recipients of prestigious customer service awards around the business, and that’s something we are very proud of,” he says. CEO Donna Robbins opened the first showroom in Charlotte in 2008 and has led Streetside Classics to sales figures that are among the best in the collector car industry, he explains. Much of the company success derives from the relationships formed with buyers and sellers worldwide. “We’re known as the ‘Nation’s Trusted Consignment Dealer’ because we provide sellers and buyers alike with the peace of mind that only comes from partnering with one of the largest classic car dealership groups in the country.” These relationships include banks and lenders, providing you multiple options to buy. As a consignor, Streetside Classics makes the process easy for you, including initial evaluation, premarketing and presentation. “Your car is marketed

in a proven and professional manner, published to outlets both in house and via our marketing and media partners across the globe,” he says. Expertise in shipping and logistics is essential. “We offer buyers several options to purchase and we make shipping your new car to your door easier than ever,” Mueller explains. “I tried selling my classic 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass for eight months prior to consigning with Streetside Classics in Phoenix. Only two weeks on location, and they had it sold for exactly what I was asking for it,” says Stefan Prufer of Hermosa Beach, California. Streetside Classics sold three cars in three months for Kevin Fialko of Mesa, Arizona, including his 1987 Buick Grand National. “All their employees are very professional: no high-price entry fees,

maintenance or pressure. I will definitely be using them again in the future!” he says. Let Streetside Classics handle the sale. “This eliminates you from having to take pictures, write descriptions, or hire somebody to take pictures and write descriptions, place countless ads, uploading things to the internet, dealing with endless questions from fake buyers online and then dealing with tire-kickers coming to your house or business,” Mueller says. “Then, once you sell on your own, you often have to deal with payment arrangements or wait for payment. We remove the hassles, simplify the process and make it easy. “Streetside gets it seen, then we get it sold!” For more information, see streetsideclassics.com or call, Arizona phone number, 480.926.1344, National, 866.542.8392.
