National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, U.K. by David M. Brown A 13th-century abbey; a 16th-century palace; an 1875 Grenville steam carriage, probably the oldest running self-propelled passenger-carrying road vehicle; 20th-century land-speed record breakers; and a contemporary oversized orange Mini, neither historic nor fast: The National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, England, has assembled these and other automotive thrills into one must-visit package. Comprising 250-plus vehicles, the world-famous collection celebrates 800 years of British history and almost 140 years of automobiles, from early days to modern times, including family vehicles, great sports cars, early motorcycles and commercial vehicles. At the head of the Beaulieu River, the village of Beaulieu is in New Forest National Park, near Southampton and Bournemouth, two hours from London by car or train to Brockenhurst, where taxis are available to the museum. In April 1952, Edward, Lord Montagu, opened up his ancestral home, Palace House at Beaulieu, to the public for the first time. Formerly the Great Gatehouse for Beaulieu Abbey, built in 1203/04, Palace House has been home to the Montagu’s since 1538 during the reign

of Henry VIII, who dissolved the country’s monasteries as part of the English Reformation. Edward’s father John, Lord Montagu, was a pioneering motorist and founded an early motoring magazine, The Car Illustrated, so he showed a small collection of five veteran cars in the entrance hall of the house. “The collection grew from these humble beginnings, moving to purpose-made buildings in the grounds of Palace House to become the Montagu Motor Museum,” says Ben Wanklyn, its public relations executive. In 1972, a 70,000-square-foot building was opened as today’s National Motor Museum. Car and Outside-the-Car Experiences Automotive activities include Jack Tucker’s Garage, which recreates the sights, sounds and smells of a typical country garage from the 1930s and the talking crash test dummy in Driving Change, an interactive display exploring motoring innovations and technologies including alternative power in the future. On Screen Cars displays TV and film favorites including Del Boy’s Reliant Regal as featured in the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses and the flying Ford

Anglia used during the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. A recent addition is Dr. Who’s muchloved car Bessie. Special museum displays also include “For Britain & For The Hell Of It” featuring Beaulieu’s land speedrecord cars; “The Motorcycle Story”; “Grand Prix Greats and Road, Race and Rally,” with F1, rallying, trials and drag racing exhibits as well as clothing, trophies, photographs, film and video of both track and road racing from the start through the present. Nonautomotive attractions include a film presentation and an exhibition of the daily life of the Cistercian Monks, founders of the abbey. In the Palace House, visitors can see late Lord Montagu’s private apartment, including his library. An exhibition, “The Lady and the Rebel,” tells the story of two extraordinary Montagu women, Pearl Pleydell-Bouverie and Elizabeth Montagu. Beaulieu has opened the newly restored Victorian Kitchen at Palace House where you can see Lord Montagu’s cook preparing authentic dishes on the range during school holidays. Her homemade cakes, biscuits and preserves are also on sale in the kitchen shop. Another section of the palace was the country’s first Soviet Russian art gallery. The exhibition, “Secret Army,” tells the story of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), which trained secret agents at the Beaulieu ‘Finishing School’ during WWll. “The agents were trained at large country houses scattered across the Beaulieu Estate before returning to occupied Europe to work with Resistance groups,” he says. “Many did not return.” Outside, enjoy the Victorian Flower Garden, the informal Wilderness Garden, dating to the 1770s, and the Ornamental Kitchen Garden laid out on the site of the original 1872 Palace House kitchen garden. Visitors can ride the monorail for an overhead look at the museum or the replica 1912 open-topped London Bus. All year, the Beaulieu schedules automotive events. Among these are April 29, 2018, when “Simply Audi” will celebrate the marque in one of the museum’s numerous rallies, and on June 24, Beaulieu will mark the 70th anniversary of the Land Rover. New for 2018 is “The Luxury of Motoring,” comprising 28 glistening Lalique glass miniatures of the most luxurious cars ever and tells the story of their design, their owners and the chauffeurs who drove them. The new Chief Engineer Tour opens the door to Beaulieu’s workshop, where visitors meet with National Motor Museum Manager and Chief Engineer Doug Hill, who began as an apprentice at Beaulieu 40 years ago.
GreatGarages And, the new-look “World of Top Gear” reflects the changes to the BBC motoring show with the impressive Ssangyacht, built from the “world’s ugliest people carrier” and a marine feature displaying boat challenge vehicles.
Lotus team cars, this Formula 1 landmark racer was built on the eve of that year’s British Grand Prix for Graham Hill and then used by the ace driver for the rest of the season. Kept in working order, the Lotus often appears at shows and events.
The Collection Here’s a look at some of the holdings of the National Museum:
•1930 ‘Blower’ Bentley 4.5-litre Supercharged –– This is one of the museum’s vehicles appearing frequently at events across the United Kingdom and Europe.
•1903 De Dion Bouton 6hp Model Q –– The Montagu family has owned this since 1913, and it began the museum collection as one of the cars first displayed in Palace House in 1952. Since that decade, this pioneering car has been a regular entrant in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
•Bluebird CN7 –– On July 17, 1964, Donald Campbell set a new World Land Speed Record of 403.10 mph/ 648.73 kph in this car, powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Proteus 4,100-horsepower gas turbine engine. After a disastrous crash at Bonneville, Utah in 1960, the tail fin was added. Lake Eyre, South Australia, was then chosen because it was a desolate, flat salt plain, but a series of frustrations delayed the final record for two years.
•1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost –– This began as a limousine, continued its life as a hearse and then morphed into a tow-truck. Edward, Lord Montagu, acquired it in the 1950s and restored it with a replica Barker Roi des Belges body. •1972 Outspan Orange Mini –– Six of these distinctive vehicles were built between 1972 and 1974 to promote Outspan Oranges. They were constructed by Brian Waite Enterprises Ltd. and incorporated many components from the popular Mini. Five were used for advertising in Britain, France and Germany while one was shipped to South Africa. Sweet! •1967 Lotus 49 –– The sole survivor of the 1967

AZ JET CENTER EVENT — JANUARY 17 by David M. Brown Aero Jet Services at the Scottsdale Airpark will host the second annual AZ Jet Center event, Wednesday January 17, 2018, 4–7 p.m. The address is 8014 East McClain Drive, Suite 200. Showcasing luxury aircraft, exotic cars, fine food and wine, a cigar lounge, and top-shelf spirits, fashion, timepieces, jewelry, the lifestyle event will also showcase work from the annual Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale. The group is led by the marketing team behind Concorso Italiano, the world’s largest exhibition of exotic Italian cars, which takes place during Monterey Automobile Week each August. “This is the only event during Arizona auction week which combines exquisite auto collections with personal aircraft and the opportunity to raise money for charity in an elegant lifestyle reception atmosphere,” he says. The AZ Jet Center event benefits Phoenix-based ChildHelp, dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse, and Forever Loved pet sanctuary, an organization that saves senior animals by providing safe and caring environments. Attendees can bid through a silent auction to obtain some of the artworks and other fine products supplied by primarily Scottsdale-based sponsors and local businesses supporting them. “AZ Jet Center is a great addition to the Auction

Brown Offering pre-war classics to today’s supercars, the 47th annual edition of Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction returns January 13–21, 2018, to WestWorld of Scottsdale, just off the Loop 101. Among the more than 1,600 docketed vehicles, most to be offered at no reserve, are stellar cars such as a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429; 1934 Packard 1101 Cabriolet; 1963 Chevrolet Corvette LS3 Custom Convertible; 1966 Ford Shelby GT350 001; 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III – Copper car; and a 1951 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport Saoutchik Coupe. The preview days are Tuesday and Wednesday, January 17 and 18, 9 a.m.−6 p.m. The 1958 Porsche 550A Spyder, chassis number 0145, is one of just 40 built, participated in four world championship races and is believed to be the only 550A to compete in a Grand Prix. The racing pedigree includes a second in class and fifth overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and class wins at the Nürburgring 1000 Km, 12 Hours of Reims, Zandvoort NAV, and Class Winner at the Dutch Grand Prix, among others. Actor James Dean loved the original 550 for its beauty, speed and nimbleness and this, its successor, bettered that. Its 1.5-liter, four-cam, flat-four engine sits on a space-frame chassis instead of the previous ladder frame and features trailing-arm suspension instead of swing axles, for example. “The weight reduction and superior stability allowed the 550A to punch far above its weight class and compete successfully against much bigger-displacement Ferrari and Aston Martin race cars, making it the ‘The Giant Killer,’” says Jakob Greisen, vice president of Bonhams U.S. Motoring Department. “It’s one of the best original examples extant. Simply put, it’s among the most important cars of its kind in the world.”

All Pinanfarina designed and Ferrari Classiche Certified, the four Prancing Stallions are a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider, 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS and a 1991 Ferrari F40. The matching-numbers 275 GTB/4 has fewer than 32,000 original miles and, also matching-numbers, the Dino has even fewer, 28,000, and retains its original interior and largely factory paint. The Hauyra, capable of 230-plus mph and startto-60 mph acceleration below three seconds, is number 87 of the 100 produced and is believed to be the only one special ordered in Carbonio Russo, an exposed red carbon fiber body. The lightweight exotic has traveled less than 1,000 miles and includes the original tools, manuals and special-order luggage. to the stand at the 2014 Retromobile in Paris and again the following year during the invitation-only Preservation Class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Expertly restored and returned to its original color combination, the beautifully sinuous car just won its class at Pebble Beach in 2017. The Blue Sera-over-Beige 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso, chassis no. 5537 GT, received a cosmetic restoration in 2013, immediately gaining it Best in Class at the 2014 Arizona Concours d’Elegance. And, the 1960 250 GT Cabriolet Series II by Pinin Farina, chassis no. 1939, is the 39th of just 200 second-series Pinin Farina Cabriolets built and was completely restored in 2000. “With the highest overall sales, sell-through rate and number of cars sold above low estimate during Arizona Car Week in 2017, we intend to continue our strong track record in the New Year,” says Shelby Myers, car specialist for RM Sotheby’s. Among the docketed vehicles are a 1964 Chevrolet Cheetah, 1948 Delahaye Chapron’s Dandy Grand Luxe, 1967 ASA 1100 Spider and a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette. “We have a completely redesigned layout this year. January 19, 10 a.m. to noon, the “Unmasking the Auction” seminar is scheduled. “Exciting and fast, the ‘64 Cheetah is a wild machine built to be a Cobra-killer,” Alcazar explains. “At 1500 pounds, the small-block Chevy V-8 can easily spin the tires. The wheelbase is so short and the engine is so far back that there’s no driveshaft, only a single universal joint between the transmission and rear axle. Effectively, it’s a mid-engine car.” This 1948 Delahaye, purchased in the 1970s, is similar to the 135Ms that the great Paris-based firm had built before the onset of World War II. The handbuilt Henri Chapron Carrossier body is in a style known as the Dandy Grand Luxe. Ferrari insisted that any car with his name must have 12 cylinders, so the rights to build the baby Ferrari were sold to the de Nora family, which created Autocostruzioni Societa per Azioni (ASA) in Milan. Only a few 1964 ASA 1100cc Spiders were built –– some estimate only six –– with this one being one of two with this engine. The numbers-matching, rare red-on-red 1967 Corvette was produced in the last year of the magnificent second-generation cars. “It’s powered by the wicked solid-lifter RPO L71 427 V-8 engine packing 435 factory-rated horsepower and mated to a Muncie M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission,” Alcazar says. founders. An “original 300” with the Blue Flame 6-cylinder, the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster has been in storage for the past two decades. Before this, the first of “America’s Sports Car” had attained “Triple Crown” status, including NCRS “Top Flight,” “PV,” and “Duntov” awards. Built to homologate the engine for NASCAR, the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429, this is #118 of 859 of these “Holy Grail” cars. Candy Apple Red on a black interior, it was assembled at Kar Kraft in Brighton, Michigan, where the shock towers were modified and the battery relocated to the trunk to make room for the huge NASCAR-winning engine. A car show, with entertainment, during the weekend is also planned. Corporate sponsors include Swisstrax Corporation, an Indio, California-based company that manufactures modular garage flooring for businesses and homes. Silver Auctions will continue its other two annual Arizona auctions in November and in March.
