written by David M. Brown
The 18th-annual The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering returns to the greens of Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel, California, Friday, August 13, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. The event is held concurrently with the 24th Bonhams Monterey Auction, August 13.
This year The Quail honors Cars of Curiosity, the 50th anniversary of the Alfa Romeo Montreal, and Automotive Couture: French cars featuring the 50th anniversary of the Citroën SM. More than 200 classic automobiles and motorcycles from the world’s pre-eminent sports and racing brands will be displayed for 5,000 guests.
Vehicles will be judged in eight classes, including Pre-War Sports & Racing; Post-War Sports; Post-War Racing; The Evolution of the Supercar; The Great Ferraris; Custom Coachwork; and Sports and Racing Motorcycles. Class winners are chosen by entrants in that class, and the Rolex Best of Show is named by all entrants participating in the event for the automobile that “stands above its peers in design, engineering, sophistication and presentation.” The 2019 winner was a 1931 Stutz DV 32 Convertible Victoria by Le Baron.
Other awards include the Spirit of The Quail, for the car best representing the spirit of motoring, chosen by The Quail Motorsports Council based on design, driving experience, performance for its era, engineering innovation, and timelessness; the Octane Editor’s Choice Award to the car the editors “would most like to drive”; the FIVA/HVA Preservation Award for the best-preserved vehicle; and the Car Park Concours de Quailegance Award for the “Best Car in the Parking Lot.”
The annual Fireside Chat Series features motorcar enthusiasts such as racecar drivers, designers, collectors and restoration experts. Previous guests have included Sir Jackie Stewart, Neal Schon of Journey, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Michael Schumacher, Supercar Blondie, Mark Webber and others.
Charities supported by The Quail are the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation, Seaside & Marina High School JROTC, North Monterey County High School Marching Band and MY Museum. The Quail offers a limited Charitable Patron Ticket. Half of each ticket ($1,475) is tax-deductible as allowed by the IRS. The selected charity will provide you a receipt of your contribution following The Quail.
“What makes The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering a truly remarkable event, aside from the extravagant setting and fine culinary offerings, is its unbeatable selection of vehicles from a variety of genres, manufacturers and time periods,” says Kai Lermen, general manager of Quail Lodge & Golf Club. “Pre- and post-war sports and racing machines meet the newest innovations from leading manufacturers at our event. It’s a wonderland for the automotive enthusiast.”
Because of the high demand, tickets are allocated by a computer-generated lottery system in February; all tickets have been sold for this year’s event. For more information about The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, call 831.620.8879 and see signature events.peninsula.com.
