Arizona Concours d’Elegance

ARIZONA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE IS JANUARY 21 IN SCOTTSDALE written by David M. Brown About 100 rarely seen dream cars and collector vehicles will compete in 16 classes, including the new American Hot Rods, during the Arizona Concours at the Scottsdale Civic Center on January 21, 2024. “The Art of Automotive Design” is this year’s theme, celebrating these superb examples of coachbuilding and car design excellence. Lamborghini is a featured class; 10 examples of the great Italian marque will be shown. These include the Gandini-designed mid-engine Miura 1989 and the revolutionary Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition. Among other cars is the famed street rod, the Mulholland Speedster, a coachbuilt homage to 1930s Packards; a 1912 de Dion-Bouton DM Roadster, with V-8 power and the DM model’s serial No. 1; and a supercar 1997 McLaren F1. The judged vehicles range from antiques from early motoring through pre-war classics, sports and competition cars and contemporary exotics. The Arizona Concours bestows class awards, Best of Show and a few special awards. The Honorary Chief Judge is Dr. Gerald Greenfield, and honorary judges are Dr. Paul Sable, Dennis Little, Lyn St James and Kip Wasenko. Last year, Best of Show went to a spectacular 1947 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Cabriolet, designed by Giuseppe Figoni. “We are excited about our continued partnership with Arizona Concours d’Elegance,” says Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts,

32

the city’s nonprofit partner with the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. “This prestigious event presents automotive art in a beautiful setting. Scottsdale Arts is a leader in all things art and culture in Arizona, and the 2024 Concours is a wonderful event to bring to our community.” Proceeds benefit local artists and art programs and Make-A-Wish Arizona. Honored guests will include Ralph Gilles, chief design officer of Stellantis, formerly Fiat/Chrysler; Bryan Nesbitt, vice president, General Motors International Operations Design; Michael Simcoe, senior vice president, GM Global Design; Dr. Gerald Greenfield; and automotive journalist and author Winston Goodfellow. “We are delighted to be back at the wonderful Scottsdale Civic Center and look forward to presenting a field of automobiles that truly exhibit ‘The Art of Automotive Design,’” says Chuck Stanford Jr., who co-chairs the Concours with Ed Winkler. “The 2024 Arizona Concours field will showcase some of the world’s rarest and most-dramatic cars –– designs that people rarely have the opportunity to see in person.” For further details, including sponsorship opportunities, visit ArizonaConcours.org. General-admission tickets are $100. Concours Plus tickets with additional features are $125; the upgraded tickets allow admission to a lecture series featuring prominent designers Saturday, January 20 and early “Dawn Patrol” admission to the Concours starting at 7 am.

Future Collector Car Show

FUTURE COLLECTOR CAR SHOW IS JANUARY 21 AT BARRETT-JACKSON SCOTTSDALE written by David M. Brown David Flinn will “for sure” be there, and he’s bringing back his 2002 Honda S2000 AP1, the 2023 Best of Show winner at the first Future Collector Car Show (FCCS) held during the Barrett-Jackson flagship Scottsdale auction. “It was the first Barrett Jackson event I have attended, and I didn’t know what to expect,” the Valley resident says. “There was a steady crowd of people all day long, and my car ended up getting quite a bit more attention than I expected. I spent the majority of the day talking with people about my car and met several S2000 owners who had recently purchased their cars.” The second FCCS at Barrett-Jackson will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the Polo Field in WestWorld of Scottsdale, as part of the nine-day BarrettJackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, January 20–28.

38

“This past January was the first time FCCS was a part of our Scottsdale Auction, and it was a resounding success,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson, established in 1971. The Scottsdalebased company also schedules annual auctions in Palm Beach, Florida; Las Vegas, Nevada; and New Orleans, Louisiana. “It attracted a large, younger and diverse audience of automotive enthusiasts. I can’t wait to see the entries at FCCS for the second installment at Barrett-Jackson this January, and I look forward to celebrating this great hobby with everyone in attendance,” he adds, noting that the event targets a younger generation and the cars they grew up with. “It’s like we saw with the generation before them who grew up loving muscle cars; this younger demographic of enthusiasts grew up appreciating cars from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Designed to drive the next generation of car lovers, the one-day FCCS is a family-friendly, concours-style event featuring vehicles that best represent the future of the collector car hobby, celebrating the cars we love today and future collectibles.

“These are the type of cars they like the most,” he says. “The passion for the hobby is the same, but they have an appreciation for cars they grew up with. They also consume a lot of content on social media, and that’s why we have a lot of social media influencers at the Future Collector Car Show as well.”

Spectators will enjoy vehicles from highly modified custom builds to original and perfectly preserved rides, offering an experience in which multiple generations will share their love for car collectibles. FCCS will also feature an immersive and competitive fashion show.

Participation to display a vehicle at the event is by application only, and the deadline to apply is January 5, 2024. Admission to FCCS will provide access to the entire Barrett-Jackson event on Sunday, January 21. For more information visit www.barrett-jackson.com or call 480.421.6694.

GreatGarages Pete Vicari: A Corvette Takes Him to College & to School on Classic Cars written by David M. Brown Pete G. Vicari, president of Vicari Auction in Harvey, La., bought his first classic, a 1940 Ford Coupe, for $20; he was 14. He followed that with other car collectibles, in particular, Corvettes. One took him to college. He restored the Ford and sold it. Later, Peter J. Vicari Sr., his father, wanted his son to drive to college in a “sensible” 1970 four-door Olds 88 coupe. But Pete Jr., 17, thought the Oldsmobile old-fashioned: “I couldn’t see myself going to college in anything less than a Corvette.” The now-defunct GM division, in fact, struggled to capture the young market until its demise in 2004; during the muscle car era, for example, one slogan was “This is not your father’s Oldsmobile.” Vicari traded the big sedan for a 1966 Sting Ray

roadster with the L79 350-hp 327 engine. From construction and building restoration, his first careers, to nearly 30 years in the classic-car auction business, the Corvette passion has ridden with him. More cars would follow; he has bought 500plus collector cars during his adulthood — including many first-generation (C1) and “mid-year” (C2) models. Later, when Vicari married Barbara and started a family, he sold the ’66, vowing it would return to his garage. Today, it’s at the head of his personal car collection in the Vicari Motorsports Museum, also in Harvey, La. After college, Vicari worked at his father’s construction company, Pete Vicari Contractor Inc., where he learned about the business as laborer,

job superintendent, project manager and, in 1980, president. Posting $500-plus million in construction projects, the company serves eight states, building and renovating residential, commercial and municipal structures. The firm helped rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “I love restoring buildings, and we’ve won many awards,” he says. “I enjoy new construction, but I love taking that old diamond and polishing it up to make it an ace.” His father, who died in 2004, gifted him his work ethic. “He put a broom in my hand when I wasn’t in school, and I went to the construction sites to clean up at 12 years old,” Vicari recalls. “I’m a workaholic. I don’t consider myself smarter than anyone else, but I will outwork you. When I say I’m going to do something, it will get done.”

While operating the construction business, Vicari continued collecting classic vehicles and slowly growing his collection from one to 50 vehicles. During Katrina, The Vicari Museum, then showcasing 60 cars, was damaged. The neighboring building fell on the museum and tore a wall away, soaking the historic contents. “We had to sift through the debris in order to recover the artifacts,” he recalls. Vicari restored the museum; it now includes exotic collector cars, bicycles, motorcycles and race vehicles as well as automobilia. At the time, he learned how to research to verify the authenticity of the items and the cars. This helped with his increasing interest in auto auctions. His first sale, at Boomtown Casino in 1995, was successful. Two years later, he sold his

first classic auto collection at the inaugural Biloxi Auction. This year in October he marked the Vicari Auction Company’s 26th annual Biloxi Auction held with Cruisin’ the Coast in October. And, on April 19 and 20, 2024, the company will participate in the 4th Annual Spring Auction at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum & Convention Center, held with the Crawfish Music Festival in Biloxi, Mississippi. Always prepared, Vicari passed the auctioneer’s certification test. “You never know when our auctioneer might not be able to be there, and I’ll have to get up and conduct an auction myself.” At His Core: ’Vettes! Peter sold most of his collection, but he has kept select cars and begun rebuilding; more than half of these are Corvettes. His joy, he says, “is just a hobby, a love for cars.” Today, he searches for the rarest examples — those with very low production numbers, unique histories and pre-production models. For instance, he owned the first Corvette with T-tops and a 2003 Corvette with one of the AAT-produced 1953-style body

conversions. In addition, he shows “tons” of memorabilia, including pedal cars, signs and full-size Schwinn bikes as well as 40 mini bikes, including Cushman, Simplex and Honda models. Some of the current collection: •1966 L-79 4-speed Corvette — The “Olds replacement” has original air and two tops. When his first child was born, he sold the car but he remained in contact with the buyer, a regional manager for U-Haul. After Hurricane Katrina, Vicari learned that he had stored it in a garage now flooded with 10 feet of water. Vicari bought the car back and had it restored in a frame-off restoration by Robert Roach in 2007. “I’ll never sell it again,” says Vicari. “It will always remain a permanent fixture of my collection.” •Three 1963 Sequentially Numbered Prototype Riverside Red Fuelie Corvette Convertibles — Chevrolet reportedly built 24 such prototype pre-production cars for the year, and Vicari’s preproduction trifecta comprises three of the seven believed to still exist. They are #30867S100015; #30867S100016; and #30867S100017.

Building the triumvirate of pre-production C2s began when he learned his fuelie system restorer had the car with VIN 30867S100016. After purchasing it, Vicari needed 20 years to locate VIN numbers 0015 and 0017. All restored, they’re documented in a “C2” book by Larry Galloway. They’re also featured in a video from noted Corvette collector and author Michael Brown.

•2003 Chevrolet Corvette Anniversary — The memory sports car resembles a 1953 Corvette.

“I’m thrilled they’re all together, in one place,” says Vicari.

•1963 Chevrolet Cheetah — The dragster was driven by Ronney Temento.

•1969 Corvette Gasser “Stone Woods & Cooke” — AA/GS Flip-top Gasser, formerly known as “Goldfinger” driven by Steve Korney.

•1964 Firetruck

•1948 Ford Anglia Gasser — Jim Oddy ran it as “Flip Flop and Fly.”

•1949 Chevrolet Pickup — Peter J. Vicari Sr.’s original company pickup.

•1960s Woody Gilmore Top Fuel dragster

•2013 Bugatti Atlantis — Vicari and his wife twice drove this replica of the 1937 classic in The Great Race. •2001 Chevrolet Anniversary Corvette

•1999 Chrysler Prowler — This red version has never been driven. •2018 Mercedes-Benz Maybach — It’s the newest car in the collection.

Motorwerks Marketing

The Wrong Agency Can Wreck Your Collector/Specialty Car Business written by David M. Brown them, are unlike average businesses and are also very different from most car dealers and their clients. Some new Motorwerks clients, for instance, have hired agencies that specialize in dentist offices, restaurants and law firms. “This has hurt them badly and paves a much more difficult, often much more expensive, path to success moving forward,” Roberge says.

Darin Roberge

Don’t make this potentially expensive mistake: Small and medium-sized specialty/classic car businesses have been hiring one-size-fits-all advertising and marketing agencies. Off the rack, though, doesn’t fit everyone, and, if you make that selection, you can lose your pants — or even your business. “This is absolutely burning up their money, hurting them in the marketplace, and then we have to come in, usually at a fraction of the budget, and pull them out of the hole the other agency put them in,” says Darin Roberge, founder and principal of Gilbert, Arizona-based Motorwerks Marketing, a full-service national advertising agency specializing in the classic and collector cars. “It is not only difficult for the clients but also for us and the outgoing agency, which now has a big loss on its record,” he says. It would have been far better if the client had called us first.” Motorwerks has experienced a large rush recently of incoming clients who have been damaged by agencies who have no understanding of the classic, collector and specialty car industry, adds Roberge, an industry expert who founded the company in 2017 after he served as an auction company executive. That damage can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars or complete loss. He explains that the classic, collector, specialty and exotic car markets, and the clients that populate

54

But Motorwerks is tuned in to the specialty/collector market, and, because of the company’s buying power and access to products and services not available anywhere else, Roberge’s staff works with a variety of clients; these include dealers, auction houses, museums, restoration and custom shops, car clubs, specialty manufacturers, industry publications and more. “When you work with us, you have a stable, longterm partner that you can build with,” he says. “We offer the skill set and quality work of a major national agency at a price point rivaling a mediumsized local firm, with the accessibility and passion of a freelance professional and none of the headaches of hiring an unqualified nonprofessional,” adds Roberge. In the same spirit of specialized know-how, Motorwerks does not work with the passenger car market. “If XYZ Mitsubishi calls us, we make it clear that we can’t help, and that there is certainly a more experienced option readily available for them elsewhere,” he says. “The classic, specialty and collector car market is all we do, and we know how it works better than anyone.” His advice to specialty car companies seeking marketing help: Intensely vet potential agencies not just for collector car experience but success — or “just call us first.” Connect with Darin Roberge and the Motorwerks Team at motorwerksmarketing.com or 480.228.1881 or info@motorwerksmarketing.com.
