EFFORTLESS EVERYWHERE: THE ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN When Rolls-Royce announced three years ago that it would launch Cullinan, it did so in the knowledge that its customers around the world had asked it to build “The Rolls-Royce of SUVs”, with luxury, performance and usability not seen before in the SUV market. Many of these customers were younger, very successful high-net-worth individuals who are heavily engaged in the experience economy, and wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them to the ends of the Earth in ultimate luxury. Automotive mobility has always been a fast moving and dynamic business, with new concepts – such as SUVs – appearing with great regularity. But those new concepts need to be perfected in order to be adopted by those customers who will accept no compromise – the patrons of true luxury. Hence the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. “History set our precedent, and today Rolls-Royce answers its call to action,” comments Müller-Ötvös. “Our answer to the visionaries, adventurers, explorers and those who believe in the supremacy of liberty is the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.” What is Cullinan? The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce as it’s never seen before. When Sir Henry Royce said, “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it”, he could have had Cullinan in mind. “We knew we had to offer our clients what they couldn’t find in the SUV market,” continues Müller-Ötvös. “They do not accept limitations or compromises in their lives. They are the new pioneers, and for them it’s about their sense of adventure and daring in how they live their experiences. This approach to life demands a motor car that can go-anywhere in ultimate luxury and style – Rolls-Royce style. Hence Cullinan.” It was clear that these new, younger and more adventurous customers wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them completely off the beaten track and reward them with life’s most enriching experiences. What they didn’t want was a vehicle Volume XV, Number 05
as ubiquitous as an SUV with compromises such as increased cabin noise due to the “two-box” formula; shared platforms that affect performance and comfort; the choice of being good either on-road or off-road; or a lower, more featureless SUV that blends in and becomes just another car. “Cullinan is luxury in its purest form blended with perfect practicality and off-road capability,” comments Müller-Ötvös. “Effortless, Everywhere is not just the promise behind Cullinan. It’s the fact.” Making luxury Effortless, Everywhere engendered an evolution in Rolls-Royce’s approach to creating an authentic Rolls-Royce SUV. The most obvious sign of this was the radical rear of Cullinan. For the first time a Rolls-Royce has an opening tailgate, called ‘The Clasp’. In a nod to the era when luggage was mounted on the exterior of the motor-car, so the occupants did not travel with their belongings, the rear profile of Cullinan is a two-part, ‘D-Back’ format, with the bustle denoting the place of the luggage. ‘The Clasp’ opens and closes in its two sections automatically at the touch of the key fob button. The rear passenger compartment of Cullinan has been designed to offer the best seat in the house for the owner’s particular needs. Two rear configurations are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual Seats. The Lounge Seat configuration is the more functional of the two options. With space for three passengers in the rear, it will likely be more attractive to families. The rear seats also fold down – a first for Rolls-Royce. The seats fold electronically in a number of configurations by pressing the appropriate button in the boot or rear door pocket. One press sees each backrest effortlessly fold down, whilst at the same time moving the headrests upwards to avoid making an imprint on the seat cushion. Both seat backs can be folded completely, creating a flat load area or in a 2/3 and 1/3 split, increasing practicality even further. Rear passengers can still travel with a long load, or

Highline Autos use the carpeted seat back as an occasional table on which to rest their precious personal items. For those who intend to transport large items back from their adventures, the rear of Cullinan offers a large amount of space in different arrangements. The rear compartment or boot area offers a standard 43.4 cubic feet of load space that expands to 68.2 cubic feet with the seats folded flat. Furthermore, the base of the rear seats sits higher than the boot floor, so even with both rear seats folded, the items in the boot cannot slip forward and are safely contained, unlike in any other SUV. But for those wishing to carry a long item back from their trip – whether it be a Mark Rothko from the Art Gallery or a newly discovered artefact from the latest archaeological dig – a loading length of 7.36 feet and load capacity of 68 cubic feet is accessed by electronically raising the boot floor to meet the seat base, allowing the item to slide through effortlessly. Rolls-Royce’s investment in making the rear of Cullinan effortlessly and ultimately practical has the side benefit of offering a loading length longer than a Range Rover Vogue Extended Wheelbase. A very practical Rolls-Royce indeed. Knowing that the Rolls-Royce customer expects to bespoke his or her Cullinan, a second rear configuration is offered.

The Individual Seat configuration is for those who value the ultimate luxury an SUV can offer over practicality. The two individual rear seats are separated by a Fixed Rear Centre Console incorporating a drinks cabinet with Rolls-Royce whisky glasses and decanter, champagne flutes and refrigerator. The seats also move in a number of planes to offer ultimate comfort whilst travelling in the rear. One final feature brings Rolls-Royce’s ultimate level of luxury to this configuration of Cullinan, creating the first truly “three-box” SUV. Inspired by the age when one never travelled with one’s luggage, a glass partition isolates the passenger cabin from the luggage compartment, creating an inner ecosystem for the occupants. In addition to enhanced and class-leading silence within the cabin, a further benefit becomes clear in the hottest and coldest of environments. That’s true for the other lunch salads, too, such as the Arugula and Apple Salad, with tomato, pecans, crumbled goat cheese and agave vinaigrette; Kale: carrots, blueberry, strawberry, apple, pecan, goat cheese and lemon vinaigrette; the Caprese: arugula, tomato, mozzarella, onion, fresh basil and bruschetta vinaigrette; and Kale and Brussels Sprouts, with tomato, bell pepper, onion, cilantro, feta, balsamic glaze and raspberry vinaigrette. Brown photos by David Urbanic “These cars are an important part of automotive history, and, as owners, we are their caretakers,” Terry Larson says. The Mesa, Arizona, resident knows how to take care of them, for sure –– in particular, Jaguars, the company cofounded by Sir William Lyons as a motorcycle sidecar business in 1920s England. For moving on five decades, Larson has restored, raced and stewarded examples of the great marque with finesse and passion, in recent years from his hand-crafted garage in Mesa. He and wife Darlene have a 1938 Jaguar SS 100 3 ½ litre; an XK120 roadster; a 1952 Hangsen Jaguar; a 1952 C-type; a 1958 ‘Knobbly’ Lister that was a factory team car; XKE roadsters and a coupe; a few Italian cars; and a 1967 Corvette. The couple are also proud of their motorcycle collection, highlighted by a 1924 Brough Superior SS80 purchased new Volume XV, Number 05
by the founder of Jaguar, William Lyons, which he raced on English beaches. “It is important we protect the heritage of these cars, especially the exceptionally rare cars,” says Larson, who was written two books on the Jaguar C-type, D-type and lightweight XKE. “The books are registers which cover the detailed history of each car built,” he says, “so someone cannot come up with a fake of that chassis number in the future. They will help protect the marque.” Fast, not Farming, is the Future Larson grew up on a small farm where early on he learned hard work, mechanics, welding and driving. “I was a car guy as long as I can remember and was saving money for a car

when I was 8 years old,” he recalls. “I always liked to operate machinery and equipment and started driving a truck in the field when I could barely reach the pedals. I used pillows to get close enough to operate it.” He had a driver’s license and a car at 13. He looked forward to after the grain was harvested as the stubble of grain stock on the field made for perfect drifting, just slightly slick. “My father would always comment that he could tell I was in the field again!” he says, noting that his friends enjoyed “normal” sports, while he played in the field and on dirt roads. He worked on the farm, at a local fuel station, and an auto repair and machine shop rebuilding small engines and working on cars. After high school, he moved to Arizona – – his parents spent winters here at times –– and attended Universal Technical Institute’s car program in Phoenix. He then took a job at a local dealership. “There were better opportunities in the automotive world in Arizona,” he recalls. His first British car was a Triumph TR 6, followed by a 1965 E-type, which he restored. “I read about it in a Road and Track magazine,” he recalls. “I loved the styling and dash layout. I thought they were amazing cars and still do.” In 1975, he and Darlene married and bought a home with a two-car garage. “I decided I wanted to focus on doing full restorations, so I sold the XKE and bought a MK7 sedan for $350 that needed everything.” Already knowledgeable in the mechanical side, he learned how to do body work, leading, paint and body, wood veneering and the rest of the restoration, doing everything except the chrome and leather work. Much of this, he says, was self-taught. Volume XV, Number 05
He sold the MK7 at auction for $7,800 in the late ’70s – – a world record price at that time for the model. “I spent a great deal of time on the restoration and made little for my time, but it got me exposure and accomplished what I needed,” he says. “I realized I needed to pay my dues and help establish a reputation.” Darlene has driven two E-types as daily cars to work for 11 years, proving the car’s reliability. She was his parts runner and sometimes test driver while also working at a doctor’s office. “I didn’t have anything to drive at first,” he says. “I just stayed home and worked.” He worked on VWs, too, while getting more established with Jaguars. “I always felt that if I worked hard, did the best I could and treated people fair and honest I could make a living doing what I loved,” Larson says. “I would not work for someone I did not like. I could not have the passion to do the work if I did not like the owner.” Home for Them and the Cars in the Foothills In 1984, they purchased raw land, designing and building their home and shop in Mesa. They sold their other home and built the shop first. At this point, they lived in a motor home and were, with persistence, able to get a loan to build their home. Because the shop is below ground level, it is cool, quiet and secluded. The walls are 8-inch poured concrete, with 3foot-wide footings to retain 10 feet of dirt. Cooling ducts are under the floor. In 1984 he hired Gregg Perry, who is still working with him, intent, as he is, on originality. One of the cars he acquired

1952 Jaguar C-type
was an XK120 Roadster with 16,000 original miles and original tires, which he still has in unrestored condition. They also bought an E-type roadster with 12,000 miles from the original owner, and an E coupe, with 26,000 miles; they still have those, too. He restored a 1938 Jaguar SS100 and sold it at auction, rippling his reputation wider. In 1987, he purchased a C-type, XKC 007, which he sold and restored for a British client. He then acquired a second, XKC 017, which he still owns; he has done many tours and 100-plus races with just one DNF. The following year, he completed a D-type (XKD 552) for a Swiss client, which has competed in the Miglia Millia, Le Mans Historics and other races and tours. About this time, he was offered XKD 513, which took third at Le Mans in 1957. Larson raced it and did tours in England and Europe. In the mid to late ’80s and ’90s, he restored many SS100s, very popular then. The name “SS” was dropped after the war for Jaguars because of the suggestion of the Nazi group, with which the marque never had association. In 1997, he restored the prototype SS90 for a Swiss client, the forerunner of the SS100 and the first two-seater ever built by Jaguar. In 1998, the car placed second in class to the bestof-show-winning Bugatti at Pebble Beach. A dozen years later, the owner returned the car to the event and won his class and two other awards, the Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy for the most significant car of British origin, and the Ian Callum Award for the most innovative design. During the ’90s, he and Darlene attended the C- and Dtype factory Cavalcades to Le Mans, where they met Norman Dewis, the automotive legend and Jaguar development test engineer for 34 years, who helped develop and test the original disc brakes. “When I got home, I called him and asked him if we organized a tour for C- and D-type owners if he would be willing to come over as our guest. The answer was yes, and we have now done the tour for 19 years,” Larson says. “He has traveled over here often since then, staying with us at our home. He has become like family.” One day, Larson and Dewis took the E Roadster out, the one he had bought from the original owner. “Norman is

always on duty, always listening and checking the car out. He was doing this and, as I pulled up to the traffic light, I looked at him and laughed,” Larson says. “He smiled and said, ‘We sure got this one right, didn’t we?’” Patching up Some Health Problems He didn’t let health problems deter him from his cars. In 1997, while driving his XK 140, he was hit by a red-lightrunning lady, then discovered he had cancer, with lymphatic complications, which resulted in a blood clot. During the time he was restoring the SS90 prototype for Pebble Beach, he was working on XKC 023, a barn find unknown to exist; he had discovered it the previous year. He found that two other cars were claiming that number. He was eventually able to purchase both of these and reunite the original parts back to the true XKC 023, cleaning up the car’s history for the owner. The same year, he found a lightweight XKE in California, later called “the long-lost lightweight E-type” because it was one of only 12 cars built and the only one that was thought lost. “It was a very busy time,” he says. In 1999, he purchased OKV 2, the lead factory team car for Le Mans in 1954 driven by Moss/Walker, which was in England. Larson raced it at Goodwood, and during the next dozen years, he put 20,000-plus miles on it for many tours and a lot of races. Dewis raced the car twice at Monterey. Two years later, Larson organized the largest group of C- and D-types in one U.S. location: 24 cars at the JCNA Tennessee event. “For me, it is almost like these cars have a soul. This soul is much more than its material,” he says. “It includes everyone Volume XV, Number 05
involved in the design, manufacture, testing, development and everything surrounding the car’s history.” Prowling out to the Garage Let’s take a look at some of those Jags with great soul: •1938 Jaguar SS100 3 ½-litre –– Chassis # 39077 is one of 118 cars built; fewer than 100 are known to exist. Considered by many the ultimate pre-war Jaguar, the six-cylinder with a four-speed sits on a box section chassis with leaf springs and Girling shocks. Top speed is 101.12 mph. The car has 58,000 original miles. The Larsons purchased this pre-war beauty in 1991 and have taken it to San Diego, where it fared well in 108 degrees, and up the California coast through wine country. “They are great cars to drive and look at,” he says. “This is the model that really brought Jaguar solidly into the sports car world.” •1952 Jaguar C-type –– Chassis # XKC 017 carries a sixcylinder DOHC 3 ½ liter wet sump engine and a four-speed and includes independent front suspension with wishbones and torsion bars. Built to race, the C-type did, winning Le Mans twice, 1951 and 1953, setting records doing so. In the first win, for example, the winning car was 77 miles ahead of the secondplace car at the finish line. In the second year, the model became the first car to race at Le Mans with disc brakes and a rubber aircraft fuel bag. Sterling Edwards, one of the originators of the Pebble Beach Road Race and the SCCA, was the first owner. He was

followed by a number of racing owners, who won a variety of races and concours events. The Larsons purchased the classic Jag in 1987, and Terry has raced it more than 100 times with just one DNF. They drove it in the first Copperstate 1000 in 1989 in Arizona. “The C-type is one of the world’s truly great race cars and great fun on the track,” he says. “It likes to brake in a straight line, set up for the corner, turn in to the apex while accelerating and drift through the turn.” •1954 Jaguar XK120 Roadster –– The Larsons purchased Chassis #S675445 in 1988 with 16,000 original miles and the original tires. Lyons and Bill Heynes designed the dualoverhead-cam six-cylinder engine for the model while they did fire-watch duty during World War II in heavily bombed Coventry. The car has not been restored, and the original engine runs flawlessly. A four-speed provides the gearing. The couple has put up more than 28,000 miles on trips to Australia and Tasmania, Arizona, Montana and Canada. One stateside trip was during record desert heat at 122 degrees, and and they were also caught in a serious snowstorm at 9,000 feet. “This car has covered 750 miles in one day and never let us down,” he says. “Jaguar brought the British sports car world to another level with the showing of the XK120,” Larson says. “The doubts of many who disputed the claim of ‘120 mph’ were laid to rest when a stock XK120 did an official top speed of Volume XV, Number 05
132.6 mph, making it ‘the world’s fastest production car.’ They are stylish, comfortable, functional, reliable and great fun to drive.” •1966 Jaguar XKE Roadster –– When Enzo Ferrari says that a car is the “most beautiful ever built,” you put your brakes on, stop, listen and look. “Many people remember where they were when they saw their first XKE,” Larson says. “Designed by Malcolm Sayer, it’s most likely made the ‘world’s most beautiful cars’ list more consistently than any other car.” Chassis # IE11756 is equipped with the 4.2-litre sixcylinder with tri carbs and a four-speed synchronize gearbox, monocoque body, rack and pinion steering and disc brakes. The Larsons put it under their roof in 1987, purchased from the original owner with 12,000 miles and a never-used spare. Unrestored, it now has 28,000 miles. “We’ve done many thousands of miles and many tours including the Going to the Sun Montana Tour,” Larson says. “These cars drive and feel much more modern than they actually are.” Darlene has used two different XKEs as daily drivers to Phoenix. •1958 Lister Jaguar (Factory Team Car) –– Only 12 of these knobbly-bodied Lister Jaguars were built, and chassis #BHL 119 is the only surviving factory team car of this body type. Jaguar won the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times in the ’50s

and decided to suspend its racing program to keep up with production demand, Larson explains. The car is “knobbly” because of its curvaceous exterior, a result of the effort to lower the frontal area as much as possible. This Lister Jaguar was built in 1958 and was the last works knobbly built. Brian Lister and Jaguar were friends, so the racer received D-type engines and gearboxes. Lyons even provided the services of Dewis to help test and develop the Lister. Cousin to the C- and D-types, the Listers were very successful. “In the early ’50s the car to beat was the C-type, mid ’50s it was the D-type and late ’50s it was the Lister Jaguar,” Larson says. Lister’s close friend, Archie Scott Brown, won 12 of the 14 races with a Lister Jaguar in its maiden season in 1957, including the prestigious British Empire Cup. Walt Hansgen, won one of his four consecutive SCAA national championships in another Lister Jaguar. Ivor Bueb and Bruce Halford also won at events such as Silverstone Grand Prix, Snetterton Vanwall Trophy, Brands Hatch & Goodwood. The Larsons’ car spent some time in the US in the ’60s before returning to the U.K. in 1970. During the next several decades, their car was raced extensively and is considered as the most successful Lister of that time. Terry has raced the car in several events and driven it on the Jaguar C- and D-type Tour. It has competed in many races in the U.S. such as Coronado, Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, Volume XV, Number 05
Buttonwillow, Thunderhill, Las Vegas, Firebird, Sears Point, Lime Rock, Mont Tremblaunt in Canada, Le Mans in France and others. “The Lister lays more flat in the corners and feels very neutral without oversteer or understeer,” he says. “Any car guy will find the view over the bonnet exhilarating!” •1953 Hansgen Jaguar –– The great driver, Walt Hansgen, started his remarkable racing career, including SCCA National Champion four years running in the ’50s, with this car. “He could not afford a Jaguar C Type, so he designed, built and raced this tube-frame, aluminum-body car using the mechanics of his Jaguar XK120. He raced this car very successfully, including an outright win at Watkins Glen in 1953. Hansgen lent the car to a friend, Paul Timmins, who also raced it successfully, including second at Cumberland in July 1953. Walt sold the car to Paul Timmins in March 1954, and he and successive owners campaigned it, for instance, at the Mt. Equinox Hill climb in 1979. It was the Jaguar Clubs of North America National Champion in 1989 and was in the museum at Watkins Glen for a few years. The home is built solid with steel framing and beams. “We traveled to about eight lumber mills throughout British Columbia,” he recalls. “When we finally found a yard making a quality 2 x 4, they refused to sell us what we needed. This quality was called ‘Japan’ quality for shipment to Japan. So we decided on commercial grade steel to frame the house.” In addition, the water and sewer pipes are above code, and the home has six zones for air-conditioning and five for heating, providing flexibility and lower energy bills than a similarly sized home without this. The views from the three patios are beyond standard. One large rear patio overlooks a waterfall, pool and spa and the Renegade golf course; a terrace patio from the upstairs office views the 15th tee; and a patio in front is a theater for sunsets. The Clock Doctor & Music Box Co.: The Time is Always Right written by David M. Brown Tyler Gesswein has a grandfather with a great sense of time and lots of grandfather clocks. Bill Gesswein Sr., owns The Clock Doctor & Music Box Co., 10610 No, 71st Place, west of Shea Boulevard and Scottsdale Road. The retired Air Force line chief been repairing, restoring and selling timepieces for 58 years, which is a lot of minutes proving you’re adept at getting things ticking again. In their engaging museumlike store, they have mantel, wall, desk, alarm clocks, and some that cuckoo, and watches, wrist and pocket varieties. Music boxes, too, the ones that play a song or a repertoire when they’re opened. They have a large selection of new and antique clocks, back to the 1700s, and many brands of watches: Seiko, Giorgio Milano, Citizen, Bulova, Zeppelin and Junkers as well as restored previously owned watches and pocket watches. And, you’ll also find Ercolano Italian inlay music boxes at the store, which is just across from another Scottsdale mainstay: Handlebar J. The Gessweins’ specialty, however, is the repair and restoration of antique clocks, watches and music boxes. In the 1950s, Bill signed up for the Air Force in Philadelphia when he was 16. After serving in the Korean War, he was stationed in Bitburg, Germany. He bought his wife a clock; it ticked for a while, then wouldn’t tock. “When I tried to repair it, I quickly found out I had no idea what I was doing,” Volume XV, Number 05
he recalls with a laugh. “After many, many hours and many, many failed attempts, I finally repaired the clock and, at that moment, I was bitten by the clock bug. It never left,” Bill adds. In 1960, he opened a clock shop with a partner in Germany. After assignments in the Vietnam War, he was transferred to The Air Force Academy in Colorado to teach; he opened another clock shop. Retiring from the Air Force after 20 years, and tired of snowy winters, he moved the family and clock shop to Scottsdale in 1982. Tyler started working on clocks when he was 12. There were two features sections of yellow cars – one for imports and another for domestics and both featured a large and diverse display of yellow. The import section included Ferrari classics like a 275GTB/4 and a 365GTB/4 “Daytona”. These were supplemented by an Enzo, a 458 Specialé and several other models. A lone 2017 Ford GT attracted a lot of attention as the generous owner handed kids Hot Wheels models of the car. Porsches included a rare Carrera GT, GT2 and several others. Lamborghini was represented by an outstanding Diablo and Jaguar by an E-Type. The domestic section had everything from modern machinery like Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers to classics from GM, Ford and Chrysler.
Despite record high temperatures there were still over 800 cars and several thousand spectators. This show has grown into the largest “cars & coffee” type show in the state and one of the largest in the whole country, but it’s not just the total number of vehicles but the quality and rarity on display. A prime example was a hand-built recreation of the iconic Daytona winning Ferrari 330-P4.
The show is free to those showing a vehicle and to spectators. It is held from 7AM – 10AM on the first Saturday of every month all year long at the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center. The next show on June 2 will feature bikes so there will be a wide range from Ducati, MV Agusta, Aprilia, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha , Suzuki and perhaps even a jet bike powered by a helicopter turbine engine.
Of course there will still be hundreds of high-performance and exotic cars on display.

Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster The new open-air member of the AMG GT family
Later this year, Mercedes-AMG is extending its sports car portfolio with an attractive open-air model: the new AMG GT S Roadster. With this latest addition, the AMG GT family now has a dozen members: four two-door Coupes, three Roadsters, two customer sports racing cars and three four-door Coupes. The basis for the high Driving Performance of the new AMG GT S Roadster is the combination of a lightweight aluminum spaceframe, a Handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, a rear axle locking differential and a sport suspension with aluminum double

interior. This positions it between the AMG GT Roadster and the even more powerful AMG GT C Roadster, now providing a choice of three open- top two-seaters. Muscular power unit for a top speed of over 190 mph The Handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo in the AMG GT S Roadster delivers an output of 515 hp and maximum torque of 494 lb-ft. This is available over a wide engine speed range from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm. The eight-cylinder power unit delivers muscular performance in all engine speed ranges, combined with high efficiency for low fuel consumption and emission levels. A sprint from standstill to 60 mph is absolved in an estimated 3.7 seconds and the dynamic power delivery continues right up to the top speed of 192 mph. The two turbochargers of the V8 are not positioned on

the outside of the cylinder banks, but inside the cylinder "V." Advantages: a compact engine design, spontaneous response of the turbochargers and low exhaust emissions thanks to optimal airflow to the near-engine catalysts. The dry sump lubrication also ensures the oil supply even with high lateral forces and allows the engine to be installed lower, thus moving the center of gravity closer to the road and forming the basis for high lateral acceleration. Power transfer is based on the combination of a front midengine and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G sport transmission in a transaxle arrangement, combined with a torsionally rigid torque tube. Thanks to the wide gear ratio spread, the decidedly high torque of the V8 biturbo engine can be used to optimum effect. The weight distribution is also ideal for optimum driving dynamics at 47 percent (front) and 53 (rear) percent.

Highline Autos With adaptive adjustable damping as standard The AMG GT S Roadster is equipped with the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive damping adjustment as standard. This fully automatic, electronically controlled system adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current requirements. This improves driving safety and ride comfort. The damping is adjusted individually for each wheel, and depends on the driving style, the road surface and the selected suspension setting. The ideal operating point can be selected at all times on the basis of extensive information relating to acceleration or vehicle speed, for example. Using a switch in the center console or by selecting the drive mode, the driver is able to choose between the different damping characteristic maps "Comfort," "Sport" and "Sport+," and can thereby individually influence the driving experience. Choice of driving experience from comfortable to very sporty The driver is able to set the AMG GT S Roadster to his/her

individual requirements using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT controller. Five drive modes, "C" (Comfort), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport Plus), "RACE" and the individually programmable setup "I" (Individual) are available. These allow a broad range of driving experiences - from comfortable to very sporty. In all modes, key parameters such as the response of the engine and transmission, the accelerator characteristics, AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, the steering, the 3-stage ESPÂŽ and the position of the AMG Performance exhaust flaps are modified. By pressing the separate "M" button in the center console, the driver can activate the manual transmission mode in any drive mode to change gear using the steering-wheel shift paddles. Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction Posts $39.4 Million in Sales Written by David M. Brown Record attendance, record auction sales, the most registered bidders ever for a Palm Beach auction, including new bidders, and three docketed car collections helped make the 16th Barrett-Jackson Florida event, April 12–15, the best yet. Altogether, 692 vehicles sold, nearly all at No Reserve, exceeding $38.3 million, and 380 items of automobilia brought another $702,000-plus. And, for charity, $430,000 was raised, bringing the event total to more than $39.4 million. The largest of the collections was John Staluppi’s Cars of Dreams: 145 cars selling for $13.96 million. “Our guests have made the Palm Beach Auction such an electrifying event year after year,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Scottsdale-based Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions®. Established in 1971, Barrett-Jackson also produces annual auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona; Palm Beach, Florida; at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut; and Las Vegas, Nevada. Brown A 1963 Ferrari 400 SuperAmerica, owned by Donnie Crevier of Costa Mesa, California, was judged Best In Show at the Concorso Ferrari, Sunday, April 22, in Old Town Pasadena. For the 11th annual event, 6,000 to 7,000 Prancing Stallion fans saw 140 cars on three blocks of Colorado Boulevard, from mid-century purpose-built racers to contemporary supercars. The crowd also enjoyed Ferrari memorabilia, accessories, quality apparel and generous sponsor displays. Sponsoring the concorso is The Ferrari Club of America, Southwest Region (FCA Southwest Region), established in 1994. With 620-plus members throughout Southern California and Hawaii, the group is one of 43 active FCA chapters throughout North America. Cars entered from 2006 and earlier were eligible and were judged following FCA national guidelines as stipulated by the International Advisory Council for the Preservation of Ferrari Automobiles (IAC/PFA). 33rd Huntington Beach Concours d’Elegance is June 2 & 3 Written by David M. Brown The Huntington Beach Concours d’Elegance returns to the lawns of Huntington Beach Central Park for its 33rd annual event, June 3, 9 to 4 p.m. The day before, June 2, the annual Rod & Custom Show, takes place 9 to 2 a.m. in the same location, 7111 Talbert, adjacent to the Huntington Beach Public Library & Cultural Resource Center, at Goldenwest. This year, approximately 4,000 car fans are anticipated. The Rod & Customs show is planning for 80 to 100 cars and the Concours 350 to 400. In addition, 70 to 80 motorcycles are expected to appear. The Concours will celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Corvette, the 100th of Chevrolet trucks, the 50th anniversary of BMW’s 2002 series and Triumph motorcycles. Dean Kunz, local KABC-TV auto specialist, will be the grand marshal. Mothers Polishes, Waxes and Cleaners is the official sponsor, as it has been for almost 30 years. In 1986, Bart McGrath began the concours to feature all automotive makes. “The venue is a beautiful setting on grass, with some trees interspersed throughout, and it’s located near airports, hotels and restaurants to accommodate our out-oftown visitors,” says the advertising manager for both events, Bob Valeski. For the Concours, there are 11 major classes with 95 Volume XV, Number 05
sub-classes. A Best of Show is awarded, which last year went to a 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial Convertible, owned by Donnie Crevier. The Sunday event features live entertainment, operating model train layout, activities for the children and a VIP luncheon. The Rod & Custom Show has three major classes with 25 sub-classes. A Best of Show is also given. Last year’s winner was a 1929 Ford Roadster. Winners of the classes in the show are invited to display their cars the next day at the concours at no charge for entry. Net proceeds go directly to the Children’s Resource Center of the Huntington Beach Library, in Huntington Beach California, which provides library and learning services to all children, normal, gifted or disabled. Funds support a book, periodical and resource collection, computers, a state-of-theart children’s theater, study labs, facilities infrastructure and staff to help children.
