Ferrari Purosangue

The Prancing Horse’s First Ever Four-Door Four-Seater

After years of anticipation by the international automotive fraternity, Ferrari has unveiled the Purosangue, the first ever four-door, four-seater car in the Prancing Horse’s 75-year history, in the magnificently atmospheric surroundings of the Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico (Pisa).

Since the marque’s earliest years, 2+2 cars (i.e. with two front and two smaller back seats) have played a significant role in its strategy. Many Ferraris have made combining benchmark performance with first class comfort one of the pillars of their success. Now, in the culmination of 75 years of leading-edge research, Ferrari has created a car that is unique on the world stage: not only do performance, driving pleasure and comfort coexist in perfect harmony, but it is also a peerless encapsulation of the Prancing Horse’s iconic DNA. This is the reason why the name Purosangue, Italian for ‘thoroughbred’, was chosen.

To enable the company to achieve the ambitious goals set for this project and create a car worthy of a place in its range, a completely different layout and innovative proportions

compared to modern GT archetypes (so-called crossovers and SUVs) were adopted. The average modern GT’s engine is mounted forwards in the car, almost straddling the front axle with the gearbox coupled directly to it; this results in less than optimal weight distribution that delivers driving dynamics and driving pleasure well short of the standards of excellence to which Prancing Horse clients and enthusiasts have become accustomed.

The Purosangue, on the other hand, has a mid-front-mounted engine with the gearbox at the rear to create a sporty transaxle layout. The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is coupled in front of the engine to provide a unique 4×4 transmission. This delivers exactly the 49:51% weight distribution that Maranello’s engineers deem optimal for a mid-front-engined sports car.

Fred Wagenhals has always been driven. To race, to invent, to thrive, to live.

The Paradise Valley, Arizona, resident and chairman and CEO of Ammo Inc. loves driving the four-wheel-drive Telluride he recently bought from Rusty Wallace Kia in Knoxville, Tennessee. A long-time friend and NASCAR Hall of Famer, Wallace was the 1984 NASCAR Cup series Rookie of the Year and, five years later, NASCAR Winston Cup champion.

Wagenhals also has a large painting in his Scottsdale Airpark office of actor and car enthusiast James Dean; he’s standing next to the “#130” Porsche 550 Spyder Dean was killed in on September 30, 1955. Dean and his mechanic were on California State Route 466 (SR 46) while driving to Salinas for a racing event when a Cal Poly student made an ill-timed left turn in front of the Porsche. The mechanic and the student survived.

Among the many cars Wagenhals has owned in the last 50 years is a replica of his idol’s final car. The actor had custom painter Dean Jefferies add the number and the words “Little Bastard” on the tail section of the meticulously crafted replica. “Jeffries painted the number and the script on my car, too,” Wagenhals says proudly.

In August this year, the 81-year-old Wagenhals traveled to South Dakota for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with Wallace and another car buddy, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, the four-time NHRA Funny Car champion and the first FC driver to exceed 250 mph.

And regularly Wagenhals remembers another friend, the late Dale Earnhardt Sr., the racing legend who helped him turn a $300,000 investment into Action Performance, the marketing/ branding company he sold to NASCAR in 2006 for a retirement-beckoning $245 million.

But he didn’t commission a set of titanium clubs, multiple greens fees and world-cruise tickets. In 2016 he and cofounders formed AMMO Inc., the owner of GunBroker.com, the largest online marketplace serving the firearms and shooting sports industries, which the company acquired in 2021.

He and his more than 300-person staff have grown revenues from $2 million to a projected $250 million this year at the 70,000-square-foot Scottsdale office and a new 185,000square-foot state-of-the-art plant in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. “We wanted to change, innovate, and invigorate the complacent munitions industry for the next generation of shooters,” he says. Driven.

The life-long car began with a 1953 Willy’s, his first car in native Marion, Ohio. In 1958, the teenage hot-rodder bought it, brought it home and he and his buddies quickly exchanged the inline 4-cylinder for a 283-ci Chevy small block from a wrecked ’57 Belair. Souped up, the V-8 was a different experience from the four-banger; he began racing at nearby Ohio and Midwestern tracks, some sanctioned and some not.

He was winning, but making a living would be a challenge. “By the early 1960s, I saw that drag racing required big money and you had to do it full time,” he recalls. His practical father suggested: “All these trophies: Go down to the market and

see how many groceries they will give you for them.” He wasn’t going to make money drag racing in his current situation. Or buy potatoes.

Cowboys & Cactuses

He found other ways to succeed: in all-terrain vehicles, jet boats and snowmobiles. In 1977, he sold the snowmobile company. “I was leaving Cleveland, after completing the deal, and I saw a cardboard statue of a cowboy next to a cactus. So, I said, ‘Take me there.’”

Landing in Phoenix, he walked from the plane — boarding stairs were still rolled up to the cabin doors — and I asked, “Where’s a nice hotel?” So the cab delivered him to the new one at Lincoln Drive and Scottsdale Road; once owned by entertainer and TV host Merv Griffin, it’s now the Hilton. “Everything north of that intersection was undeveloped land, and I thought it looked like Giant, the James Dean movie about the cattle business in Texas,” he recalls. “So, I stayed.”

He brought with him his 1:3-scale, gas-powered mini-car business, two children and a former wife. “Soon after settling in, a man walked into my office with cowboy boots and a cowboy hat; It was Tex Earnhardt [the car dealer who started his multi-dealership empire with a small corner used-car lot

in the Valley]. “We became good friends. ‘I want to introduce you to someone,’ Tex told me.”

That man was Larry Mahan, the six-time all-around world champion and two-time bull-riding champion. He had been asked to find someone to build a computerized mechanical bull for use in the 1980 movie, Urban Cowboy; Mahan would teach Travolta had to ride it.

Wagenhals immediately jumped on the opportunity. He created the one Travolta rides into fame and then produced another 200 for bars, restaurants and other meeting places throughout the country. He rode those to the bank: “I made $2 million in about three months,” he says.

In Los Angeles, he met Aaron Spelling, the television producer who was then doing Fantasy Island, starring Ricardo Montalbán, as the magical Mr. Roarke, and Hervé Villechaize, who, as Tattoo, announced the arriving guests, “The Plane, The Plane.”

For him, Wagenhals designed the vehicle powered by a three-horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine.

Through Spelling, Wagenhals also met actress and 1970s poster-phenom Farrah Fawcett, who was starring in Charley’s

Angels at the time. “We became very good friends,” he says. “A very nice person.”

On one of his trips, he was looking at baseball training cards and thought about how to connect that multi-million-dollar business with the car industry. The answer was another thriving industry, die-cast miniature cars.

But he needed exclusive licensing rights from well-known NASCAR drivers to make sure the large toy manufacturers couldn’t get up to speed and challenge the young business. Rusty Wallace first gave his okay. Then Wagenhals went to Earnhardt Sr. and told him he wanted to package a miniature of his famous black #3 racer with a trading card featuring him.

Earnhardt asked him how much he would pay for the rights; Wagenhals told him $300,000. “Bring me the money,” Earnhardt said. He sold his home, moved into a small apartment and depleted his bank account. Then he put pedal to the metal.

In 1993, Wagenhals debuted Action Performance Companies, eventually signing long-term exclusive licenses with racing stars such as Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Richard Childress Racing, Stewart, Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (as well

as Sr.), Don Prudhomme and many more. The company also manufactured miniature replica drivers helmets and sold racingstyle clothing including t-shirts, leather jackets and baseball caps for all ages.

“We went from a card table and four employees in a Phoenix warehouse to $407 million annually in four years here in Phoenix,” he says, noting that in the 1990s, interest in stock car racing was rapidly accelerating in the U.S. “It became a revenue generator for the drivers, too; some ended up making more in royalties than from driving a car.”

By 1998, Action was one of the major toy makers in the United States, controlling approximately 60 percent of the NASCAR market. The cars were variously sold through a collectors club, at racing venues and other mainstream distribution channels. In 2010, Wagenhals was inducted into the Die-Cast Hall of Fame because of his success and influence.

In December 2005, NASCAR bought Action Performance,

and one of Wagenhals’ celebratory gestures was making a list of all the cars he wanted: a ’33 and a ’40 Willys, ’55, ’56 and ’57 Chevys and a 1927 Ford T-bucket roadster. “I eventually found I didn’t have a place to put them, so I sold them and bought a ’49 Mercury like the one James Dean as Jim Stark drove in Rebel Without a Cause.”

A Half-Dozen Cars & Memories

He keeps five cars now and many more memories:

•1953 Willys — The white-on-lipstick red car he’s had since 1958 is fully restored at his Paradise Valley home; today it has a Chevy 383-cid stroker, a BDS blower and a GM Turbo 400 transmission. It’s has lots of C-gas drag-race history from his youth: in Mansfield, Ohio, Dragway 42 outside West Salem and in Cleveland.

When he first brought it home in Marion and yanked the factory 4-cylinder, his father asked, “Why do you need a new

motor?” Dad was not a drag racer. Wagenhals and friends kept on pulling more and more tenths of seconds from the Sunday quarter mile runs: with three Strombergs, with a 1950 Ford truck tranny, a McCulloch blower, a GMC blower, Hillborn injectors and a Latham blower with two side drafts. “We played around with every little combination to make it faster,” Wagenhals says.

He sold the car in 1961 and, after making some money in other ventures, he searched for it seven years later and found it in a Mansfield, Ohio, junk yard; someone had given him the lead. A sapling was growing through it.

He cut the sapling away, paid for the Willys and towed the car back to his home. He threw in a 327 V-8 and drove it on the street and still cruises the Valley in it. “Every time I get cocky about things, I look at that car and remember what my dad used to say, ‘You pushed it more than you drove it.’ But it taught me a lot; it was a great education for me. And I had a lot of fun.”

•1939 Chevrolet Custom Coupe — The all-steel-body Ford roadster has the original 298-ci Chevy 6-cylinder engine with two four barrels; it makes more than 600 horses with its 12-port Sissell heads, 4-speed manual and Rick Hendrick headers.

The full roll cage is definitely necessary. He and “Bullet” Bob Reed built this in the early 1960s, and it’s still remembered

as the “World’s Fastest 6-Cylinder Gasser.” It ran a 139.992 quarter, which is still very quick for the journey. Reed will be inducted in the Drag Racing Hall of Fame this year.

•’32 Ford Roadster — #59 features a Brookville steel body on a TCI chassis with a 4-link Currie 9-inch rear differential and front straight axle. The wheels have four-corner Wilwood disc brakes on retro Coker white-wall cheater slicks and babymoon hubcaps. Inside is a bomber-style bench seat and an aluminum Duvall split windshield. The inline 6 was also built by his friend, “Bullet” Bob Reed; it delivers 500 horsepower to the B &M TH 350 tranny.

•2004 Chevrolet SSR Pickup Truck — Joining the Kia in his garage, it’s a daily commuter, too, a factory original.

•1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud — Wagenhals has the car in Houston with Bill Carlton, owner of Ekstensive Metal Works. In January, Carlton will feature the car on Texas Metal on the Discovery Channel. “It’s a ground-up restomod,” Wagenhals says. “Everything on this will be brand new, Porsche Blue on black with leather interior.”

•Keeping Track of the Memories — “I save everything,” he says. “I have a file on everything I’ve done.” Earnhardt Sr., for instance, gave him a toolbox when he won his sixth NASCAR championship, and his collection includes another toolbox from Richard Childress, the former NASCAR driver and owner of Richard Childress Racing. John Force, the record-holding drag-racer, gifted him tools, too. He also has a number of

And albums of pictures. “I have one of me and John Force and Don Prudhomme at the gravesite of James Dean, and I have a chair of his from the old Fairmount High School in Indiana, where he first acted on stage.”

Wagenhals admits to not knowing the drivers today in the same way he knew the previous generation, so he’s not spending the kind of time he used to at the tracks. But he’s in daily communication with friends such as Wallace, Childress and Prudhomme.

He’s enjoying his time with long-time friend, Pauline “PJ” Johnson, whom he hired four-plus decades ago for Action Performance when she was 18. She’s a collector, too, with a superb miniature dolls collection.

Wagenhals is in at AMMO’s Scottsdale headquarters at 6 in the morning and stays the day. Work is still life. “Everything I have dreamed of I have enjoyed, and my work has led me to so many people who I care so much about,” he says. “It’s been a great hot rod life.”

What’s available today in luxury homes above $16 million?

Listing success rate is down to 70%, the lowest we have seen for more than a dozen years, according to our sources at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Real Estate, Scottsdale. The fall-out rate has dropped dramatically — from 8% to 30% just within the last four months.

As a result, buyers can feel empowered: Their dollars buy more, and they can buy the home they want at an improved price or buy a home that’s larger or has more features than the one they might have purchased even a year ago.

In turn, sellers must be realistic, knowing that 30% of listings fail to sell these days. And agents need to comp the home accurately, know the neighborhoods where their listings are, more aggressively market the property, preparing showings better instead of worrying about how to handle a deluge of offers in the first few days. Price it to sell in today’s increasingly competitive market.

Sellers must ensure that the curb appeal, paint, flooring and

staging are optimum. Expect the buyers to be fewer and their expectations to be even higher. The sellers success rate improves by 30% when they pre-inspect the home and address all deficiencies beforehand. “Coming soon” listings are declining; it’s crucial for everyone to see their home is an option now.

Buyers are most excited to perform when value is perceived. In any market, early activity is the best activity. When a listing first hits the market, assuming it’s competitively positioned, you’re going to attract the “most motivated buyers,” those who understand there’s always immediate competition for the best. At Russ Lyon, my associate and mentor, Mike Balzotti, affectionately calls these “the hoverers.”

The seller’s, presentation, coupled with second-to-none marketing by your agent/advocate will gain the most qualified eyes. Your advocate should know; if he or she doesn’t, I advocate for another.

Let’s look at a dozen selected luxury listings to see what $16-plus million brings in today’s market. Some are newbuilds or never-lived-ins; others are To-Be-Builts (TBBs).

Many are in Silverleaf, the Valley’s premiere guard-gated luxury community in north Scottsdale. Some of the most recently built or TBB homes are at or near the $2,000 persquare-foot building cost or will be with move-in upgrades; that’s the current threshold for super luxury in the Valley. The homes are listed from the highest first, including two at an exalted $30-plus million.

•$32,000,000, 20568 N. 112th St., Scottsdale 85255 ($1,853.25 per square foot build cost) — This TBB is the highest-price home listed currently in Silverleaf. The Contemporary Desert Prairie-style home represents the artistry of architect CP Drewett, principal of Drewett Works; Claire Ownby, founder of Ownby Design; and builder, Gary Fries, founder of GF Fries Construction.

The three-story 17,000-plus square-foot home on two acres has seven bedrooms, ten bathrooms, a wellness center with an indoor spa, a garage turntable for 20 vehicles and 9,000 square feet of covered outdoor living space. The 1,324-squarefoot casita has a dedicated garage.

Homes at the peak such as this “check all boxes”: materials and finishes; amenities, including an outdoor golf simulator; craftsmanship and components, such as Eggersmann Kitchens and Wolf and SubZero appliances; and the superlative views of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, with miles of hiking and biking trails.

•$30,600,000, 7265 N. 40th St. Paradise Valley 85253 ($1,700) — Five-acre Amethyst in Crown Canyon, with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, will be the work of BedBrock Developers and architect Stratton Andrews. The 18,000square-foot hillside home “flows with the topography, allowing 270-degree views of the Valley, Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak, while immersing the homeowner in the natural beauty of the desert,” says Andrews. A ten-car show garage in this TBB awaits your treasured collectibles.

•$28,000,000, 20958 N. 112th St., Scottsdale 85255 ($2,056.25) — “The Aerie” up high in Silverleaf was designed by Erik Peterson, principal of PHX Architecture, and built by Paragon Custom Homes. Close to the previous home on 112th St., the just-completed Desert Contemporary home, including seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, has an open great room which leads to the designer kitchen and hidden catering kitchen; an entertainment zone; a palatial master wing; and a masterful connection to the outdoor Arizona lifestyle.

•$24,220,000, 11235 E. Wingspan Way, Scottsdale 85255 ($2,095.88) — Completed in July 2021 by Salcito Custom Homes, as designed by Dale Gardon, the 4.67-acre estate in Windgate at Silverleaf includes air-conditioned garage space for 11 cars and a detached guest house with a separate garage. Some Take-Away

As you consider buying or selling, here are some points to think about. For one, make sure you have studied the community the home is in. Even in a luxury gated community, neighborhoods have different price levels and panache. When pricing your home, ask if your neighbors are at that level, too. Similarly, if you are buying a super-luxury home, are the neighbors’ homes built with the same standards; do they have the same high-quality amenities?

Consider, too, that many super-luxury home are TBBs, as indicated in the snippet descriptions above; these may take three to five years to be ready for occupancy. The properties,

built by Phil Smith in the Village of Lone Mountain, features tall butt-glazed windows in the entry and great room, providing a wrap-around view of the mountains and Valley.

what we also call “paper specs,” have become very popular recently because the arrangement gives the architect time to optimally connect a design with a site, taking into account setbacks, views, solar exposures and topographical features such as washes and hills.

And be sure that the plan an architect provides will pass muster with the municipality as well as, if applicable, the HOA. If it doesn’t, you can waste time and money. In comparison, consider that homes just completed but have had no residents may save the stress of waiting as a luxury home is built. They’re move-in ready; so move in.

As you select your architect and builder, do your due diligence. Talk to people who have had customs built with these pros. How was the relationship? Did the person deliver, regardless of the great reputation? Have you heard any complaints? Can I see a comfortable relationship during as many as five years of planning, permitting and building?

In addition, can I obtain golf course membership or clubhouse membership with my purchase?

Focus on the build contract, especially in these times when materials are often delayed, regardless of what is promised. Can the home really be built in this time frame? We can help with that.

And, think about your lifestyle. Golf lovers may prefer a community with multiple courses within it or nearby. But, for those who shop and dine out regularly or want cultural venues close to them or extensive social interaction, another area may be better.

Flying Lizard Motorsports Team is Moving to Apex Motor Club in Maricopa

Flying Lizard Motorsports, 16-time sports car racing champions, is relocating its central operations from Sonoma, California, to a new 15,000-square-foot facility at Apex Motor Club in Maricopa, 35 minutes southwest of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and less than an hour drive from downtown Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. The 280-acre private membership motorsports club provides high-tier racing facilities, private garages and professional driver training.

In 2004, founder Seth Neiman entered the Flying Lizard Motorsports team in the American Le Mans Series, competing in the GT class until 2012. The following year, the team moved to the GTC class, while also competing at the 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Daytona and eight times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Neiman sold the team in 2014 to members Darren Law,

Thomas Blam and Tommy Sadler; with his guidance, they had earned three team- and three driver-championship titles. The new owners began running two Audi R8 LMS in the TUDOR Championship; the following year, they added two Porsches in Porsche Club racing.

The Flying Lizard team finished the 2015 season winning at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill with Toyo Tires, repeating this in 2016, 2017, and 2018. In the 2020 season, they secured four titles in the GT4 America championship.

The team has become a customer racing effort, supported by clientele in the Valley, throughout the country and worldwide. Sadler is now technical director, Blam team manager and Law program manager.

The new facility at Apex, which should be complete in third quarter 2023, will also allow Flying Lizard Motorsports to

offer on-track testing and driver-development opportunities for professional and amateur customers; this was less convenient in the former location, where the team will continue to operate from four shops at Sonoma Raceway until the move is complete.

“Sonoma has been an amazing home for us, but as our team continues to grow, our organization needs a central headquarters with room to grow, and the Apex facility perfectly fits the bill,” says Law. “Apex is really an ideal location for us because both myself and one of my business partners, Tommy Sadler, live locally. The racing community in the area is larger than one would expect, and it is rare that a race facility is in a location such as this.”

Matt Williams, managing partner and vice president of Apex, adds, “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Flying Lizard to Apex.” Jason Plotke is company co-principal.

Apex Motor Club has become a destination for privateer teams, automotive enthusiasts and manufacturer track-day programs. Currently, Williams and Plotke are expanding the

2.27-mile circuit with a 3,400-foot straightaway that will become a 4.20-mile, multiple-configuration circuit with elevation changes and banking corners.

“Our development has always been about being the best, and our association with the Lizards is one more instance of that,” Williams says. “We look forward to working cooperatively with them on the final design of our second track as well as utilizing their input on member activities and driver education.”

The team will also work with the facility as the development of the property continues, providing input as a successful customer racing program, Law explains.

“This is a great move for Flying Lizard. Our program has seen a lot of changes over the last few years, and it has only made our business more successful,” he says. “It will be great to have all our cars and programs under one roof and in a brand-new and popular facility!”

Bentley Motors has today unveiled the Bentley Mulliner Batur – a new two-door grand touring coupé limited to 18 series pieces that embodies the start of a design revolution at Bentley.

Created by Director of Design Andreas Mindt and his team, the Batur is a showcase of a new design DNA that will ultimately guide the design of Bentley’s future range of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

The collection of just 18 series examples of the Batur is the latest project by Bentley’s in-house bespoke and coachbuilding division, Mulliner, and succeeds the Bacalar – a run of 12 individually specified, designed and handcrafted Barchettas that relaunched coachbuilding at Bentley. Like its predecessor – the Bacalar – the Batur is named after a beautiful natural body of water. Lake Batur is an 289 feet deep, 172,222,566 square foot crater lake in Kintamani on the island of Bali,

Indonesia, and provides nutrient-rich water to both local hot springs and agriculture.

The Batur will also be the most powerful Bentley yet, with a 740+ PS version of the iconic, hand-assembled 6.0-litre twinturbocharged W12 engine that has metaphorically and literally powered Bentley’s success for the last two decades. As the engine enters its twilight years as part of Bentley’s Beyond100 transformation journey to being fully electrified, the Batur forms the first part of a celebration of the W12’s extraordinary power, torque and refinement. Engine performance will be matched to the most advanced Bentley chassis ever, with Speed-tuned air suspension, electric active anti-roll control, eLSD, four-wheel steering and torque vectoring.

All 18 examples of the Batur have already been reserved. Each one will be designed collaboratively with each customer,

guided by Mulliner’s in-house design team. Customers will be able to specify the colour and finish of practically every surface of the Batur, to create a car as individual as they are. Each one will then be handcrafted over the course of several months in Mulliner’s workshop at Bentley’s carbon neutral factory in Crewe, England, with first deliveries expected in mid-2023.

The Batur was unveiled at Bentley’s Signature Party at Monterey Car Week, in front of almost 500 VIP guests, by Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Adrian Hallmark, who comments:

Monterey & Pebble Beach 2022: a Deusy!

A one-off Deusenberg J Figoni Sports Torpedo, a Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti, a Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante, a Jaguar D-Type and a Bizzarini 5300 Strada led hundreds of classic vehicles into this year’s Monterey Car Week and its culminating Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.

The 1932 Duesenberg J Figoni Sports Torpedo was Best of Show at the 71st Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance — the first time since 2013 that an American classic ascended the top spot at the showcase event. At auction, RM Sotheby’s sold the week’s most expensive car, making $22,005,000 with the sale of a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider. Placing second for the week was a 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante.

Meanwhile, the 1956 Jaguar D-Type, owned by well-known Paradise Valley, Arizona, collector William ‘Bill’ Pope, was honored as the Best of Show at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, for “its superb construction, design, attention to detail, workmanship and extensive restoration process,” an official statement noted. The great model was prepared and

detailed by Rolling Art Motorsports in Scottsdale, Arizona. In one of the most remarkable achievements in racing history, Jaguar won Le Mans three years straight with the D-Type, 1955 to 1957; it’s estimated that only 75 were built.

At Mecum, a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT ‘Tour De France’ Alloy Berlinetta (Lot S57) led all lots at $2,860,000. And, during the silver-anniversary Bonhams at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the final Ferrari 250 Europa GT sold for $2,095,000.

Also, a 1967 Bizzarrini 5300 Strada, owned by Billy and Tisa Hibbs of Tyler, Texas, won Best in Show at Concorso Italiano. And, the 2022 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion hosted 400-plus incredible historic race cars, drivers and fans for racing and car talk.

Meanwhile, Exotics on Broadway, held in Seaside, welcomed almost 60,000 people, who enjoyed supercars such as Koenigsegg, Bugatti, Pagani and others. The event included title sponsor Michelin USA and 45 additional sponsors and vendors. “This year’s first VIP tent was a huge success,” says Aimee Shackelford, an event spokesperson.

Pebble Beach Brilliance

The one-off Duesenberg bested 220 stellar cars from 19 coun tries and 33 states at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.

“This rare Duesenberg marries American might with European style,” says Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “It did well in some early rallies and concours. Then, its history took a turn, with chassis separated from body. The story of its resurrection is one of pure passion.” The winning car had received an exhaustive restoration in Blenheim, Canada, by RM Restorations.

In 2013, a 1934 Packard Twelve took the top spot at Pebble Beach; nine years later, the Duesenberg brothers’ marque returned to the podium; it had claimed six prior wins at Pebble Beach.

The one-only car is owned by Lee R. Anderson Sr. and his wife, Penny. “My goodness, we’re overwhelmed,” she said just after the win. “We just can’t believe we won Best of Show! It’s just a joy and an honor to be here.”

Runners-up included Fritz Burkard’s 1937 Talbot-Lago T150C-SS Figoni & Falaschi Teardrop Coupé; Sam and Emily Mann’s 1930 Duesenberg J Graber Cabriolet; and Merle and Peter Mullin’s 1951 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Stabilimenti Farina Cabriolet.

This year’s Pebble Beach Concours raised more than $2.67 million for charity, bringing the event’s total charitable donations to $35-plus million. More than 95 Monterey County charities will benefit, helping 10,000-plus local children annually.

“We’ve been doing this for years, and we’ve come close in the past, but we’ve never won actually,” said Lee Anderson of his car. “All the preparation — the story behind this car is just amazing. There’s only one Figoni Duesenberg, ever ever, and it’s this one right here. So, it’s like all these things coming together to make a real champion. We’re so excited.”

Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, realized $109.45 million in sales for its 18th auction event during Monterey Car Week. Five vehicles set world records, including an unrestored 1961 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Series I Coupé Aerodinamico which sold for $6,000,000; a 1990 Ferrari F40, $3,965,000; and a 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, $3,167,500.

RM Sotheby’s, Mecum

RM Sotheby’s flagship auction totaled $239.26 million, more than all other Monterey auctions combined, and broke a world record for the highest grossing automotive auction ever, says Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions for the Blenheim, Ontario-based house.

Bidders came from 38 countries and cars arrived from nine countries, 52 lots sold for more than $1 million, and 95% of the lots sold, a total of 180 cars.

“The market continues to rise and this weekend is a testament that the collector market is thriving,” Duff says. “We’re looking forward to an exceptional year and we expect to continue with the incredible momentum that we’ve gained to date.”

Mecum Monterey 2022 offered a superlative mix of pre-war classics to muscle cars, ’80s- and ’90s-era cars as well as late model supercars and exotics. Sales exceeded $52.1 million, as 297 collector cars pleased new owners. In addition to the 250 GT ‘Tour De France’ Alloy Berlinetta, two other Ferraris finished in the top 10: the 2014 LaFerrari Prototype PS1 (Lot (S33), $2.5 million, and the 2012 LaFerrari Prototype MP1 (Lot S34), $1.6 million.

Other top sellers at the auction included a 2014 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse Jean-Pierre Wimille Legend Edition (Lot S50), $2.64 million; a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot S49), $1.49 million, and the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (Lot S58) previously owned by the late actor Paul Walker (Fast & Furious franchise), $1.08 million.

“More now than ever, buyers are willing to spend money for quality cars and recognize the limited opportunities to acquire the best examples possible. This year in Monterey was certainly one of those opportunities,” says Sam Murtaugh, COO of Mecum Auctions. “The lineup in Monterey was filled not simply with quantity but with quality, and the results throughout the week showed that the collector car market continues to charge ahead into new territory.”

Bonhams ‘Stars’ & Concorso Italiano

The 25th edition of the Bonhams Monterey Week sale achieved more than $30 million with a sell-through rate of 90%; several seven-figure collector cars sold. The 1955 250 Europa GT Coupé is the very last example of the landmark model built by Pininfarina, first exhibited at the 1956 Brussels Motor Show; it raced in period at Spa Francorchamps.

Other European classics included a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupé, which achieved $1,737,500, and a 1931 Stutz DV-32 Convertible Victoria, with one-off coach work by LeBaron, $1,435,000. A 1926 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly also brought $1.435 million.

From the States two star rides sold: an ex-Steve McQueen 1971 Husqvarna motorcycle, $186,500, one of the actor’s favorite off-road bikes until his death in 1980 and an exHumphrey Bogart 1956 Ford Thunderbird, $105,000, in slate grey coachwork as ordered by Bogie.

“We are very pleased with the strong sell-through rate and results achieved for the many exciting lots we offered,” says Jakob Greisen, vice president and head of Bonhams US Motoring Department. “We are pleased to be entrusted with several cars that had over half a century ownership and are honored to pass these on to the next custodians.”

The Best of Show at this year’s Concorso Italiano was a 1967 Bizzarrini 5300 Strada owned by Billy and Tisa Hibbs. “This is an exceptional example of a well-preserved and-main tained Italian treasure from years past,” said Tom McDowell, chairman of the Concorso Italiano Foundation. “Each of the

Two winners of the Bella Machina Award — the Concorso Italiano Hall of Fame — were Maruzio Corbi, the famed Pinninfarina designer, and Mariella Mengozzi, curator and director of the MAUTO, Museo Dell’Automomobile Di Torino, the automotive museum in Turin, Italy.

Meguiars Best Finish award went to Alan Pliska for his 1966 Lamborghini GT 400 2+2, the Valentino Balboni award was presented to the First Diablo VT Roadster imported into the United States, owned by Robert Felton and prepared by Worldwide Detailing Products & Services, Adolfo Orsi, the automotive historian and publisher, received the Doug Magnon Award.

Two county community groups benefitted with generous donations from Concorso Italiano: Habitat for Humanity of Monterey County and the San Marcos School.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Celebrates 24 Hours of Le Mans

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion began the year-

long centennial celebration of the 24 Hours of Le Mans at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

“We are very pleased by the initial feedback to the new Wednesday-through-Saturday format, the activities and fea tures, the car selection and driver camaraderie, and ticket sales,” says John Narigi, president and general manager of the famous venue. “I want to also thank our county of Monterey supervisors who participated to see just how important the Rolex Reunion is in the motoring world.”

The Grand Marshal for the event was nine-time Le Mans overall winner Tom Kristensen. Also attending were six-time overall winner Jacky Ickx, four-time overall winner Henri Pescarolo, one-time overall and two-time class winner Stefan Johansson, overall winner Jochen Mass, two-time class winners John Morton and Ron Fellows, Shelby Daytona Cobra designer, Peter Brock and the president of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, Pierre Fillon. The session was hosted by automotive historian Murray Smith.

The Le Mans Legends Heritage Display, presented by Motul, included 51 winning cars and selected specials, such as the 1929 and 1930 overall-winning Bentley Speed Six, two Ferrari 250 GTOs, the 1967 winning Ford Mk IV and the 2005 Audi R8.

Among the award-winners were the Ken Miles Award, David Woodhouse, driving the ex-Ken Miles’ 1961 Dolphin Mk2 and The Spirit of Monterey, Martin Lauber, who entered his 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia TI and 1976 Porsche 911 RSR. Another fan favorite was the fabulous Hudson Hornet, “Doc Hudson,” that was the acclaimed character in the move Cars, driven by Bruce Canepa.

Among the track winners were Gunnar Jeannette, who recorded a 36.25 Hillclimb in a 1971 Porsche 908/3. “The first-ever Corkscrew Hillclimb and Community Day was a resounding success and attracted many of our area residents for the first time,” Narigi says.

Says Monterey Mayor Clyde Roberson of the successful event: “Monterey Car Week 2022 was a smooth ride. Our city team and partnering agencies worked hard to help host the busiest week of the year on the Monterey Peninsula, and I was proud to see a fun, safe, respectful crowd enjoying the car events and the beautiful city of Monterey.”

A Historic Drive to the Clouds Pikes Peak 2022 - 100th Running

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has earned the nickname “The Race To The Clouds” for a good reason. This historic race takes place on the strikingly beautiful Pikes Peak just outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado where competitors race to its peak which sits at a staggering 14,115 feet in elevation. The trek up to the top of America’s Mountain consists of 156 turns and stretches 12.42 miles. Even though the scenery is beautiful, the mountain lays host to tight bends, steep drop offs and unpredictable weather that has claimed the egos, and sometimes the lives, of the brave individuals who choose to race up to its summit. Despite the danger, a courageous group of drivers still flock to the mountain every year. Some hope to just make it to the top and have a donut to celebrate completing the challenge, while some others seek to get to the top as fast as possible and etch their names into the record books. The harsh conditions and unpredictable weather mean that this is truly a massive challenge for both man and machine. After all, one mistake could spell disaster.

A Quick History

The very first running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb took place during August 1916. The maiden winner of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was a man named Rea Lentz who posted the winning time of 20 minutes 55.6 seconds. At that time, the entire road leading up to the summit was dirt and the only cars competing were open wheel cars like Lentz’s Romano Demon Special. Lentz won the inaugural event as the youngest driver entered at only 22 years old. After the first event, the race was put on hold during World War I and resumed in 1920. Over the years, the race began to gain popularity with racers from all corners of the globe, including the legendary Unser family.

The Unser family is well known on the mountain, and for good reason. Bobby Unser won his first Hill Climb in 1926 and his younger brother, Louis Unser, won his first championship in 1934. After many more years of racing, Louis had won the Hill Climb a total of 9 times and has earned the nickname

“The King of the Mountain”. Since then, many more gener ations of Unser kin have raced and a few have even won the hill climb. In total members of the Unser family have raced 114 times and have earned 38 titles. Loni Unser, the latest of the family to brave the mountain, is competing in this year's Hill Climb in her Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

Throughout the years, Pikes Peak has become a tradition for even more families like the Unsers. Leonard, Clint and Codie Vahsholtz have been racing their way up the mountain since 1975 and have 44 combined titles across many different vehicle classes. In addition to these two families, when you think of Pikes Peak, you can’t help but think of Rod and Rhys Millen. The father son duo hails from New Zealand and have been a force to reckon with ever since Rod began racing up the mountain in the 1980s. Rod Millen is a highly decorated rallycross driver, so he immediately made an impact on the dirt track of Pike Peak. He is most known for setting the record on dirt with a blistering 10 minutes 4 second run in 1997 with his Toyota Celica. In addition to holding the fastest time on dirt, Rod dominated the mountain in the late 1990s

taking home the fastest overall time in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. Rod’s all dirt course record will stand forever since shortly after, sections of the mountains were paved. Rod’s wife Shelley has also competed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, making them the first ever husband and wife team to compete. Their son, Rhys Millen, has also made his presence known on the mountain. Coming from a similar rallycross background as well as winning Formula Drift in 2004 and 2005, he set the rear wheel drive record for the mountain in 2009. Rod and Rhys collectively hold 15 crowns on the Mountain.

As the years drew on, records fell as a new breed of driver and car made their way to the mountain to see just how fast they can get to the top. The dirt track was slowly being replaced with a fully paved road, section by section, until it was finally completed in 2012. 2011 was the first year a car broke the elusive 10 minute barrier. The legendary Japanese Rallycross driver, Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima, became the first man to do this in his Suzuki SX4 Hill Climb Special with a time of 9 minutes 51 seconds after winning outright for the past 6 consecutive seasons. began to tumble some more when Sebastien Loeb stepped onto the mountain. The heavily decorated rallycross driver piloted his Peugeot 206 T16 up the mountain and finished with a time of 8 minutes 14 seconds which is over a minute faster than Tajima’s record the year before. This was Sebastien’s one and only attempt up the mountain. Loeb’s record seemed to be out of reach for many years, until Romain Dumas and the Volkswagen I.D. R came to the mountain just 5 years later in 2017. This all electric speed machine obliterated Sebastien’s record with an official time of 7 minutes 57 seconds which is the current overall record of the Pikes Peaks Hill Climb.

A Century in the Making

June 2022 marked the 100th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. With the event celebrating a century

of running, the mountain was host to over 70 drivers seeking to conquer the mountain on this momentous occasion. Some of which were previous winners and record holders who have been racing the mountain for years, while others were rookies who have never stepped foot on the mountain prior to the event. The two drivers grabbing the most attention leading up to the race were previous five-time Pikes Peak winner Rod Millen and Ken Block, the world famous rally driver, founder of Hoonigan and subject of the popular Gymkhana films.

To celebrate the 100th running, 71 year old Pikes Peak legend, Rod Millen, dusted off his famous Toyota Tacoma race truck which won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in back to back years (1998-1999) and prepped it for the harsh trek up the mountain. Prior to this year’s hillclimb, the car had not run in over 20 years and this was Rod’s first race up the mountain in 23 years.

The last time the car was on the mountain, the road was vastly different. In the late 1990’s a good part of the track was gravel, meaning that the car was not suited to hop onto the tarmac and set a competitive time. This car is one of the most iconic cars that has ever raced up the mountain. The yellow and white Pennzoil livery is known among motorsports fans around the world. Fans were eager to see it back on the mountain after such a long time and driven by the same legendary man who piloted it over twenty years ago.

Ken Block is known around the world for pushing the limits of every car he steps into. This is evident given his rich rally cross experience and documenting various stunts to broad cast on the internet. Ken is no stranger to the mountain. In 2017, Ken Block released a film called “Climbkhana” which featured him drifting his 1,400 horsepower 1965 Ford Mustang RTR V2 known as the “Hoonicorn” up the mountain through each of its 156 turns, while performing various stunts along the way. To celebrate the 100th running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, he decided to return to the mountain with a bang. Ken and his team created an off the wall car for this special occasion. In conjunction with BBi Autosport, they created a 1,400 horsepower, mid-engined, twin-turbo, all wheel drive Porsche 911 with a wing big enough to use as a table. BBi has helped previous competitors reach the summit and this

year set out with Hoonigan to create a car that could compete for an outright win. The livery of the car is also widely talked about. Hoonigan sought the help of street artist Trevor Andrew or “Guccighost”. The car rocks a pink livery that resembles the 1971 Porsche 917/20 “Pink Pig” that raced at the 24 hours of Le Mans. The pink livery along with one of Ken’s biggest sponsors, Mobil One, the car was affectionately named, the “Hoonipegasus”.

However, the car never got a chance to get comfortable on the mountain. Ken struggled with the car on the first day of practice and at the end of day two, the engine dropped a valve and was unrepairable. Because of this, the California based team was not able to complete a qualifying run on day three, thus disqualifying them from the Hill Climb on Sunday. Ken took to Instagram to break the news to fans and announce that he will bring the car back next year to finally see what the bespoke machine can do.

Leading Up to the Race

The atmosphere leading up to the week of the race was one of excitement. All of the drivers and teams were excited to get on the mountain and get prepped for the race on Sunday. Pikes Peak is known for dramatic changes in the weather,

which has plagued the race in the past. Luckily, the week of practice provided the drivers with amazingly calm weather, allowing them to dial in their machines and set blistering qualifying times. There were some drivers that were feeling confident about the possibility of breaking records. Specifically, David Donner who was in the driver's seat of the Champion Porsche/000 Magazine Porsche 911 Turbo S. The goal for David and the team was to break the production car record of 10 minutes 18 seconds. During the practice sessions, it looked like this could be the year that the record could be changing hands.

Another driver that was taking advantage of the good weather conditions was 2021 King of the mountain, Robin Shute. Shute had his 2018 Wolf TSC-FS dialed in and ultimately clocked the fastest qualifying time ever for a car with an internal combustion engine. Robin’s 3 minute 24.5 second qualifying run bested previous record holder, Sébastien Loeb, who has held that record since 2013. Needless to say, Robin

was competing at an extremely high level and was ready to see how much he can improve on last year’s stellar performance.

Although, the nice weather did not mean that everything was going to go perfect for the drivers during practice. The moun tain is still perilous and can catch even the most seasoned drivers off guard. There were a handful of drivers that lost control and crashed due to the demanding nature of the track. Gustav Lundah lost control of his 911 Turbo R on the top section during practice and lodged it on one of the steep mountain slopes. Sead Causevic went off in the first section of the track and collided with a tree in his Audi S3 LMS. Descendant of Pikes Peak royalty, and a rookie for 2022, Loni Unser had an unfortunate crash on the last day of practice. When she was driving on the top section of the mountain, the bumpy road caused the ABS to malfunction on her Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Luckily, her team and the technicians at Porsche Colorado Springs were able to fix her car just in time for the race on Sunday morning.

Race Day

The drivers were truly blessed with good weather during the practice sessions, but their good luck had to run out at some point, and unfortunately, it had to be on race day. The mountain on the morning of the 100th running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo was sprinkled with snow and blanketed with dense fog. A storm moved through the area the day before which dropped a considerable amount of rain on the mountain. Without any heat to dissipate the moisture, the drivers had to contend with racing up the mountain in foggy conditions so bad, visibility was only a hundred feet at best. The thick fog would test the knowledge and courage of each driver preparing to go up the mountain on this momentous occasion.

With thousands of fans in attendance, the drivers pressed on up the mountain, into the fog and the rain. With the limited visibility, the drivers were just happy to get up the mountain in one piece. Unfortunately, no records were broken on race day, but the class winners were as follows:

For the second year in a row, Robin Shute took home the crown on the 100th running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo by finishing nearly 25 seconds quicker than his closest competitor. This makes three overall Pikes Peak Hill Climb wins for Shute. One can only wonder how much better his time would be if the conditions of the race were different.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has and will continue to be a totem of American motorsport. Its rich history combined with the perils and unforgiving nature of the mountain has convinced drivers to come back yearly. In the decades to come, drivers will continue to heed the call of the mountain to experience all of the danger and thrill the race has to offer.
