Creating a sensation at the 2002 North American Auto Show in Detroit, the stunning GT40 concept car celebrated Ford Motor Company’s historic centenary and recalled its 1-2-3 victory over Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. However, rather than simply serving as a modern throwback to past glories, the new concept car confirmed the venerable automaker’s formidable design and engineering prowess.

Rooted in a small gathering of SVT (Special Vehicle Team), Ford Racing, and Ford Marketing personnel in 1998, the car that would soon enter production as the Ford GT was intended as a serious, purpose-built sports car to enhance Ford’s image and demonstrate the company’s vast expertise in the performance field. To say that the discussion group and the designers, engineers, and contractors who collectively brought the modern Ford GT to fruition met their objective, would be a gross understatement.

Rooted in Ford Motor Company’s longstanding tradition of translating its futuristic concept cars to production reality, the modern Ford GT’s lineage traces not only to the heroic GT40 of the 1960s but also draws from the many advanced design and engineering ideas put forth by the GT90 and V-12 Indigo show cars of the mid-1990s. Credit for the 2002 GT40 concept car goes to Camilo Pardo, head of Ford’s “Living Legends” studio under Ford design chief, J. Mays. A rolling showcase

of Ford Motor Company’s design and engineering prowess, the GT40 was approved for further development to productionready status in the Spring of 2002. Legalities soon forced a name change to simply “Ford GT,” but the point was clear –the new car would electrify Ford enthusiasts everywhere and once again put the world’s best supercars on the defensive.

A major player in the project yielding the production-ready Ford GT was racer/manufacturer Steve Saleen, who hosted Ford engineering, marketing, and design teams at Saleen’s southern California facilities for a month of discussions, under the strictest secrecy. All great cloak-and-dagger operations have interesting codenames, and Ford’s planned new supercar was no exception, with the Ford GT project cryptically codenamed “Petunia.” In the autumn of 2002, just 100 days after program kick-off, the first “workhorse” Ford GT prototype was completed and operational. By May 2003, the first three cars were completed in time for the Ford Motor Company’s centennial festivities.

Conceived as an ultra-high-performance sports car for the road, yet without any racing pretensions, the productionready Ford GT’s engineering and construction principles were nonetheless consistent with those of contemporary endurance-racing cars. Powering the new GT was a mid-

mounted, lightweight alloy V8 engine, displacing 5.4 liters and featuring a Lysholm twin-screw supercharger, DOHC 32-valve cylinder heads, and competition-type dry sump lubrication. Producing 550 bhp, the engine was paired with a six-speed gearbox/rear transaxle produced by Ricardo, a supplier of racing transmissions for international endurance racing. Allindependent coil-over suspension and huge ventilated Brembo four-wheel disc brakes rounded out the GT’s sophisticated mechanical package.

Built using space-age materials and construction techniques,

each GT featured a strong, yet lightweight aluminum spaceframe chassis mounting super-plastic-formed aluminum body panels and an aluminum-over-carbon engine cover. Production was completed along five distinct stages, with initial assembly by Norwalk, Ohio's Mayflower Vehicle Systems, paint applied by Saleen Special Vehicles in Troy, Michigan, engine assembly at Ford's Romeo, Michigan engine plant, and finally, engine and transmission installation and interior finishing at Ford's Wixom, Michigan plant. Notably, the Ford GT was the last vehicle project completed at Wixom.

While capable of truly blistering performance, including a 209.1-mph blast with one of the test cars at Italy’s Nardò circuit, the Ford GT is also renowned for its ease of operation, including a disarmingly light clutch feel. The interior pays homage to the original GT40, yet is far more comfortable, with leather-trimmed carbon fiber seats, electric power windows, and air conditioning. All of these attributes came about from the now-legendary development and testing program applied to the GT by Ford's SVT Special Vehicle Team before it was deemed ready for series production and sale to the public. Of course, the GT’s raison d’être was extreme performance,

with the car’s capabilities honed to perfection under the watchful eye of none other than Carroll Shelby, who in conjunction with Ken Miles, whipped the original 1960s GT40 into a Ferrari-beater. Given the intense 1960s “Ford vs Ferrari” rivalry, it comes as no surprise that the engineers at Maranello closely eyed the Ford GT with great interest. In fact, one example was purchased new by Ferrari of North America, Inc. and subsequently exported to Italy, lending credence to the theory that Ferrari acquired a late-production Ford GT to examine and evaluate.

According to published sources, only 4,033 examples of the Ford GT were produced in all, including 2,022 and 2,011 built during 2005 and 2006, respectively. Featuring exceptionally low mileage, this pairing of 2006 models scheduled to cross the auction block at the upcoming Scottsdale Auction provides an all-too-rare glimpse into how these modern legends were when new. Finished in Tungsten Gray, the first GT is a one-owner example that remains in exceptionally original and unmodified condition with just 1,123 actual miles at the time of writing. In addition to preventative maintenance performed in accordance with Ford Motor Company standards, it also benefits from storage within a climate-controlled facility while not in use, including the luxury of carpeted floors underneath it.

Bill Wallace’s & Chuck Puth’s Racy XK120

This Jag purrs, with power, panache and pedigree.

Every day, day or night, car restorer Bill Wallace starts up his internet search engine and cruises for classics to renew and, most often, sell to appreciative buyers who love the original car and the restorative caress.

In October 2021, he was doing a midnight scour of Craig’s List and noticed a vehicle that jumped from the listings: a 1952 left-hand-drive Jaguar XK120 roadster, one of six that appeared in the promotional Race of Champions May 10, 1952, in Silverstone, England. Documented by a certificate of authenticity from Jaguar, the XK120 is the only one in bronze and probably the last of the sextet existing.

The search for the XK120 was as exciting as the ride it offers: “It’s all about the chase,” says Wallace, who previously owned the Autobahn Collision and Preferred Collision shops, both in the Scottsdale Airpark. “I love cars and am always looking for that needle in the haystack. I start with a year between 1940 to 1970, the years I am most interested in,” explains Wallace, who opened Impact Collision Shop in Fountain Hills, Arizona, in 2019. His daughter, Shanti, assists him in the office.

“That particular day, I was looking for a 1952,” he continues. “A guy in Oklahoma had stored the car in his barn, in pieces. It’s was all original with no major accidents recorded. I sent him a deposit on the condition it was what he said it was, and he assured me it was.”

He and the car’s co-owner, Chuck Puth, are completing a nut-and-bolt restoration of the 70-year-old matching-numbers English sports car at the shop; they hope to enter it in next August’s stellar Pebble Beach Concours in California.

Jaguar, which owned the cars, randomly removed them from the assembly line and hired six accomplished drivers for a race to promote the car. In particular, potential American buyers were yearning for English sports cars after returning home from World War II, Wallace explains.

They were Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh of Siam (1914–1985); English/Belgian Johnny Claes (1916–1956); Tony Gaze (1920–2013), an Australian flying ace with 12 1/2 kills in WWII; the Swissman, “Tulo” de Gaffenried (1914–2007); Paul Pietsche, a German who founded Das Auto magazine (1911–2012); and International Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee, the great English racer, Stirling Moss (1929–2020), who won the event.

“After the race, they sent the cars back to Jaguar where they

were refitted and shipped to the States but with no badging or special recognition that these were the cars that had been in the Race of Champions,” Puth says. They were built in March and April of 1952 with VINs 672012, 672063, 672070 (the car now in Fountain Hills), 672080, 672094 and 672104. As yet, no one has been able to identify which driver piloted each car.

Giles Chapman, in his Jaguar Century: 100 years of Automotive Excellence (Motorbooks, 1991) explains that three of the cars were sent to Los Angeles and three to New York City, to dealers who had been selected by William Lyons, the founder and owner of the British car company. On the West Coast, that man was Charles H. ‘Chuck’ Hornburg Jr., whom Lyons had met a few years earlier in England for the XK120 unveiling. On the East Coast, Max Hoffman had a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Jag dealership on posh Park Avenue in Manhattan.

At the request of Lyons, Jaguar quickly designed the XK120 in 1948 to accommodate the new XK twin-cam engines that

would win an extraordinary five times at Le Mans in the 1950s in the magnificent Types C and D. The successful platform continued from 1949 through 1961, morphing into the fine XK140 and XK150 models. A total of 12,078 cars were sold, most of them open-top roadsters (The Encyclopedia of Classic Cars, Thunder Bay Press, 1999).

“By standards of 1948, the XK120 was a huge leap into the future,” the writer continues. “Not only was it beautiful but it was very fast, it had the world’s first production twin-cam engine, and it offered remarkable value for the money.” In fact, with taxes, it was about £1,298; In current dollars, that’s approximately $52,000, says Dennis Hoffman, the economist for Arizona State University.

Following its debut at the London Motor Show in October 1948, the production run of 240 went quickly, with the first to actor and car lover, Clark Gable, who claimed one of his possibly three XK120s in September 1952 at Kent.

Beautiful it was, with flowing, Delahayesque lines, and superbly fast, capable of 120 mph, establishing the XK120 as the world’s fastest production car; it immediately excelled on tracks and in rallies. Helping to make it so were the aluminum bonnet, trunk and doors on the steel chassis.

In 1948, driver “Soapy” Sutton nailed 132 mph in Belgium, and the great factory driver and test engineer, Norman Dewis, made it no doubt a year later in Spain, attaining 172 mph in an aerodynamically modified XK120.

East to Midwest to the West

In New York City, Hoffman sold Wallace's and Puth's car to a retired New Jersey man who drove it all day and painted it white. The Oklahoma man bought it from him; he knew the car for what it was because he had searched down the VIN and found that this was one of the six Race of Champions cars. “He hunted for the other five cars, and no one seems to know where there are, if they still are,” Puth says. “He told us if had found them, he would have bought them.”

Keeping the XK120 for 12 years, the Oklahoma man started to disassemble it for restoration, but the savvy assistant who was helping him died. “The owner got lost and overwhelmed, was moving to Naples, Florida, with his wife and sold the car to me and Chuck,” Wallace says.

A native of historic Rumson, New Jersey, just outside New York City, Puth built homes and apartment communities until about five years ago; he now lives in Montecito, California,

where his children are in the music industry: Charlie, Stephen and Mikaela, who manages Charlie. Part time, Chuck continues his building activities.

He’s always loved cars such as old Volvos; his brother had Pontiac GTOs, a Chevelle SS and a 1970 Grand Prix. Puth and Wallace met through a 1967 Lincoln Continental and Highline Autos magazine. Puth had invited restoration experts to work on the car, but they made the well-traveled classic worse. “I was going to junk it,” he recalls.

A couple of years ago, he and his wife Debbie came west to help his children with the demanding music business. “I saw a Highline Autos magazine in a car wash in West Hollywood and saw Bill’s ad and called him. I had the car shipped from New Jersey to here and drove out with my building construction assistant,” he explains. “Bill and his team finished the car in 2020, and I ended up selling it at Barrett-Jackson. Since then, the two of us have become very good friends.”

Boxes of Pieces, and then Confetti?

“Everything was in impeccable condition in the barn, starting with the engine and transmission, and Chuck and I are bringing it back to life,” Wallace says.

They are doing “everything by the book, to the letter,” he explains. For one, they have contracted with a concours judge, who provided a book detailing all the do’s and don’ts of competitions.

For example, they have applied hand-brushed paint to the underside of the hood and the bronze body color to selected areas. And, they have secured leather straps around the leaf springs. “We think that was meant to keep stones from getting caught in between the springs,” Wallace says.

Everything is original or original refurbished such as the stainless steel exhaust, the color-keyed steel wheels, half-moon caps and the Pirelli tubed repros. “The original car had Dunlaps, but they’re out of business, so these tires are acceptable by the judges,” he says.

They sent the engine and transmission and other components to specialists for redo’s in California; the chrome work has been completed by a shop in Tucson Wallace has been working with for years.

“Not often do you find a car with this kind of pedigree,” he says. “It’s pure art.”

The Race of Champions XK120 should easily qualify for the Mille Miglia, and the men will be registering it for Pebble Beach in a few months. Wallace says: “This is a car they’ve never seen before. So we’re hoping they will sign us up and we will see confetti next August.”

Pit Stop Detail: When Details Count, Experience Counts

Experience is the difference at Marcus Morton’s Pit Stop Detail.

“The industry is full of ‘detailers,’ but Pit Stop has proven to provide a quality service to Arizona for over 15 years with a professional approach and continuous education for chemicals, tools and techniques in the industry,” says Morton, a Gilbert resident who started the company in 2007 with a mobile truck.

While in high school, his closest friends worked at a detail shop in Puyallup, Washington, where he first learned about detailing. “Since then, it’s been something I have always enjoyed doing,” he says. He also enjoys time with his family and friends, cooking, traveling and scenic drives. “A little known fact,” he notes: “I was the first Starbucks partner (employee) to have entered into a latte art contest at a coffee fest in Seattle back in 2005. Coffee and cars are meaningful to me, as they have been the two areas of my professional careers this far in life. I still love both!”

Recently, I was fortunate to share an evening in New York City with other Top 100 list revenue producers for Sotheby’s International Realty, one of the world’s largest real estate firms. Our company includes 25,000 real estate professionals working from 1,000 offices in 75 countries.

The group was told that collectively this year we produced more revenue than any relocation company worldwide; these companies move major corporations from one location to another. To accomplish this level of success through residential real estate, we network with associates to provide our clients the finest properties to buy — from New York City to the American Southwest to Dubai. For our sellers, we ensure that their homes are marketed to those select buyers who will most appreciate them.

office, next to Scottsdale Fashion Square, I lead the 15-member Private Client Group there; these professionals specialize in luxury and hyper-luxury Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Arcadia Phoenix homes. Their networking and teamwork maintain a high level of success for clients looking to move in or those looking to move on.

A few associate agents from the Russ Lyon Desert Mountain office joined me at the beautiful Ritz Carlton Central Park, not far from the U.S. headquarters for SIR. All of the Top 100 shared a delightful, informative time. I knew many of these local experts through our regional or Global Networking events or Zoom conferences, but meeting them, one on one, in this high-tech, low-touch world, was so important.

My associate serving the Washington, D.C. area, Daniel Heider, says of the experience: “My key takeaway from the Top 100

is witnessing the astounding network of talented real estate professionals from coast to coast that we get the good fortune of collaborating with by being at Sotheby’s International Realty.”

And, Jeremy Stein, covering Manhattan, notes: “Sotheby’s International Realty is the single strongest luxury brand in the world, and when you bring together the top 100 agents within that brand, the opportunity to forge relationships that will ultimately benefit our client base is almost unavoidable.”

As co-founder and associate broker for The Stein Team, he co-chairs a group of 45–50 of the top agents who meet virtually every month and in person at least twice a year.

He adds: “If you go into such events with a goal of meeting agents in markets that are important to your own client base (where your clients summer, vacation, own second or third homes, have migrated to or from) you can create a network of like-minded, successful agents who will be able to provide to your clients the same top-tier service they have come to expect because of their experience with you.”

How Can We Do Better?

Until now, Sotheby’s International feted only those 25 agents

who produced the highest volumes from company-owned offices; this year, that total was upped to 100 to include agents, like me and a few other Russ Lyon associates, who work for franchisees. The reason for this is to hone the level of networking companywide for enhanced client service and experience; that, in turn, should increase higher level of client experience and, of course, sales volume for the brand.

We asked ourselves: How we can elevate our performance for this select caliber of clientele? Sharing local-market pulls, global real estate trends and economics has gained us best practice to now.

Let’s say a Sotheby’s Top 100 agent in one of our major Arizona feeder markets, such as California, Seattle, Colorado, Washington State, Minnesota or Chicago, has a client searching for a second home in Arizona: to visit the car auctions in January, to golf, to equestrian, to warm up during the winter. Without the Top 100, he or she might have to check me out, taking hours of stressful, time-consuming internet and phone vetting.

If that agent didn’t know me, he or she could pull up my stats and find out how much volume I’ve done, how soon my

properties sell, the average days on the market and how much those homes sell for. But, by working with a Top 100 agent, a high score is a given; that agent already knows I won’t disappoint their client because I am a documented high-level producer. And that saves time, and perhaps a client who might otherwise be dissatisfied and look elsewhere. They know this agent is responsible; he or she has passed the test.

Eric Iantorno, who services the San Diego area, says, “Spending time with the other Top 100 agents had a different feel as it relates to other networking events I attend. This is the best of the best. Period. Spending time with agents that do a lot of business was invigorating and rewarding.”

He adds: “The majority of my time was spent meeting and networking with new agents. I met over 40 agents that I hadn’t connected with prior and now have their contact information for the respective markets. Offering my clients the best agents

in a given market is a powerful referral, and I feel good when I send my clients to a top 100 agent,” he adds. “In return, I hope the agents feel the same way about me when it comes time to send their valued clients to San Diego.”

And, San Francisco market specialist, Gregg Lynn, says, “Since 2017 I have attended all four top-agent events in New York City. I depend upon events such as this to gather our most productive agents to learn about important trends and new practices of leading agents. As our clients have homes in multiple markets, the ability to connect with top agents such as Frank to understand the current dynamics of the Scottsdale market enables me to effectively advise clients globally.”

Listening Up to the Future of Luxury

In Manhattan, we learned about the benefits of high-level networking and more. One of our associates serving the New York City-area market discussed, for example, that he is bro-

kering newly built residence for up to $5,000 per square foot. That pricing level is possible not only because areas such as Manhattan have traditionally commanded high prices throughout the residential spectrum but because legacy homebuyers are requiring platinum-level fabrics, on-the-cusp technology and other amenities. One, for instance, are barndoorlike doors that flush to the wall, saving space like pocket doors, but also are art pieces themselves.

People want to live longer and healthier, and we are paying even more attention to everything that matters to well-being and lifestyle enhancement. There are apps that control mood and lighting, room to room, hour to hour. Floor temperature can be controlled, too; this is more and more popular in the colder climates. You can take hot and cold dips before and after workouts. And hydraulic work-out products eliminate weights and provide more living space. Low-voltage lighting is healthy lighting.

Today’s legacy properties are like cars, with multiple check engine lights. For example, a light goes on to tell you need to adjust your air quality or water the plants more. This monitoring process can also help us build more efficient

homes. Say we place a meter on different sides of a home being built. We can determine which side is getting more rain and address that. It’s a new way of building, thinking smarter and saving costs.

Listening attentively is a key to Top 100 protocols. If a client has certain likes and needs, it’s going to take a certain amount of time for an agent to understand them and research their checklist: These are the things that they like and don’t like. But don’t frustrate them by showing properties that don’t provide all the checks. In today’s immediate-information society, they’ll find someone else.

This demand for luxury, and the costs associated with it, is global, London to South Africa to Arizona. At the same time, I am concerned that this price level will work its way down to other points, pushing the workforce out of areas and adding to our affordable housing issue. That’s a big concern for me. Everyone needs homes.

This event reinforced my view that you are who your circle is. When you’re hanging around the best, you pick up their habits, their demeanor and, most importantly, their attitude.

The exclusive model limited to 2,500 units globally demonstrates that the concept of the Porsche 911 knows almost no boundaries. It harks back to the first overall Porsche victory at the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally – which also represents the first use of the all-wheel drive system in a Porsche 911. To commemorate this achievement, the new 911 Dakar will be offered with an optional Rallye Design Package inspired by the iconic winning car of 1984.

Standing tall, sliding sideways

The first thing that immediately stands out on the Porsche 911 Dakar is its ride height: It is 2 inches higher than on a 911 Carrera model with Sport Suspension. In addition to this, the standard lift system can raise the front and rear of the car by an additional 1.2 inches – achieving a level of ride height and ramp-over angles similar to conventional SUVs. The lift system is not only designed to help clear obstacles at low speeds, but is also an integral component of the newly calibrated suspension. The “High Level” setting is usable at up to approximately 105 mph for spirited off-road driving. Above this speed, the car returns to its normal ride height.

Specially developed Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires,

measuring 245/45 ZR 19 in front and 295/40 ZR 20 at the rear complement the especially sporty off-road appearance of the new model. The off-road focused tread pattern has a depth of nine millimeters, the reinforced sidewalls and tread have dual carcasses, making them suitable for off-road excursions and more resistant to sidewall damage. Summer performance tires and snow tires from the Pirelli P Zero tire family are optionally available, and also feature dual carcass layers, but the new all-terrain tires are standard equipment.

Powerful engine for all surfaces

The 3.0-liter twin-turbo Boxer engine makes 473 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers commanding performance accompanied by the unmistakable Boxer engine sound. The new 911 Dakar accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, the top track speed is limited to 150 mph due to the higher cross-section of the all-terrain tires.

Classic cars gain panache and value with racing history: They’ve won at Le Mans, Indy or Daytona or run the Mille Miglia through Italy. Fire trucks and rescue equipment acquire this pedigree at their first call to service. They are the mobile tools first responders depend on to save lives and property: in 19th-century Philadelphia, in Los Angeles and other areas such as central Arizona, when, almost a decade ago, two crew buggies delivered the fated 19 hotshots to the Granite Mountain wildfire in the Bradshaw Mountains.

The County of Los Angeles Fire Museum includes 70 vintage rigs, such as an 1855 hand-drawn hose cart from Philadelphia; the famous Parademic Squad 51 and ambulance from the television show “EMERGENCY!”; and a 1925 Stutz fire engine.

These and other showpieces are rotated for display at the Mayne Event Center, 16400 Bellflower Boulevard, in Bellflower, just outside Los Angeles.

Also in the city, the museum has a 27,000-square-foot restoration venue. In addition, a 16,000–square-foot long-term storage warehouse is in the city of South Gate, and a 500square-foot venue is in East Los Angeles at the Los Angeles County Fire Department training facility.

In the mid-1970s, two Los Angeles County firefighters began what would become the County of Los Angeles Fire Museum Association. In the 1980s, the museum organized in the state of California as a not-for-profit public benefit corporation. A nine-member board of mostly current or retired firefighters collects, preserves and educates the public on American fire apparatus, emphasizing the County of Los Angeles Fire Department, explains Joe Woyjeck, director of restorations with marketing responsibilities for the museum. His son Kevin was one of the 19 Granite Mountain firefighters killed in 2013 during the Yarnell, Arizona, wildfire.

Joe has spent 37 years with the County of Los Angeles Fire department, the final 17 years as a fire captain; he retired about six years ago. He has volunteered for 20-plus years on the board of the fire museum, serving as its president and vice president, and is an instructor for the National Fallen

He is also on the peer support teams for the International Association of Firefighters and the County of Los Angeles Fire Department and serves on the board of the Kevin Woyjeck Explorers for Life association, a nonprofit that helps young men and women nationwide hoping to become first responders.

“We have grown from a couple of antique fire engines to more than 70, dating back to the mid-1800s. Additionally, uniforms, badges, helmets, photographs and many other artifacts are being resurrected and preserved as lucent examples of the fire service,” he says.

The collection also includes a restored 1969 Chevrolet Suburban ambulance as a tribute to the thousands of nonfirefighter pre-hospital care professionals. He notes that there are about 27,000 fire departments in the country, with almost one million firefighters, 300,000 professionals and roughly 700,000 volunteers. Every year, approximately 70 firefighters die in line-of-duty work.

Former museum president, and now treasurer, Paul Schneider, says: “What makes our collection special is that we understand it is much more than a bunch of shiny old fire trucks. We understand that the vehicles in the museum’s collection are the backdrops for the stories of those people that gave these vehicles purpose. They are meant for us to share our stories and the stories of others who have followed the calling to serve.”

Lifesavers

•1855 Hand-drawn Hose Cart —The earliest piece in the collection was in service at Tivoli Hose Co. No.39, organized on June 5, 1855; the company was at 25th and Brandywine streets in Philadelphia and active until March 15,1871, when the paid department began service. That location was Brown Street, west of 22nd Street.

by the Society of California Pioneers in San Francisco in April 2021. “To help understand the age of this incredible piece, you must understand that it was built six years before the start of the Civil War,” Woyjeck says.

•1916 American La France — “Fire house 5+2 Grizzly Flats Disney Rig” is a Type 40 Triple Combination Junior Pumper from American LaFrance, serial number #1093, with a 350-gallons-per-minute rotary gear pump. It served the Venice (CA) fire department as Engine 1; that department joined the Los Angeles City Fire Department on November 25, 1925, and the vehicle rebadged as Los Angeles City Fire Engine 63.

“To the best of our knowledge, it was retired in the late 1940s or in the early 1950s,” he explains, noting that retirement means that it can no longer be used in active service. “Ward Kimball, one of the original nine animators for Walt Disney, purchased it. He repainted and applied the decoration during his restoration and then used it to carry his Dixieland band, Firehouse 5+2. It could be found driving the band down Main Street in Disneyland in the early days as they played to the crowd’s delight.” After he died, his wife Betsy donated it to the Los Angeles County Fire Museum.

•1925 Stutz Fire Engine — This is Los Angeles County Fire Department Engine 23, Model K3. The “Baby Stutz” is Serial number 347, with a 4-cylinder, 71-horsepower gasoline engine and a Northern 450-gallon-per-minute rotary pump.

The Stutz was the first fire engine placed in service by the Los Angeles County Fire department in the city of Bellflower. Prior to that, equipment left over from the Bellflower Volunteer

Fire Department was used when a separate district formed on December 17, 1923. On April 26 ,1931, Captain George Elsey rode this engine to a fire where he was electrocuted.

In the 1960s, a Whittier firefighter found the rig being used as a water pump in an orange grove in Orange County, California. He purchased it, and city firefighters used it for parades and other public events.

A decade later, the city contracted with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and this engine returned to its roots. Starting in 2017, the museum staff restored it again to more accurately reflect its 1920s appearance, Woyjeck says.

•1973 Engine 51, Ward LaFrance — This is a P-80 Ambassador model, serial number P80-0811 with a Cummins NH855, a normally aspirated diesel, rated at 250 horsepower, connected to an Allison HT-70 automatic Power Shift.

The Ward LaFrance company provided this fire engine to Universal to use in “EMERGENCY!” When filming stopped, it served Los Angeles County Fire Station 60 (Universal Studios) for a while before moving to the village in Yosemite National Park for about 20 years. “The Los Angeles County Fire Museum had stayed in touch with the fire department in Yosemite and was able to put a deal together to bring the famous fire engine to the Los Angeles County Fire Museum,” he explains.

On August 8, 2008, the Los Angeles County Fire museum took possession at the Bellflower restoration facility. “A few years later, the museum did a beautiful restoration on the rig, and now she stands proudly next to Paramedic Squad 51 at the Los Angeles County Fire Museum,” Woyjeck explains.

1973 Engine 51, Ward LaFrance

•1969 Chevrolet C-10 — The Stoner Ambulance Company built this ½ ton Suburban-based ambulance, which was operated by the Snyder Ambulance company.

The powertrain is a 350-cubic-inch V-8 and a Turbo 400 transmission. Snyder rented it to Universal Studios. It has made many on-screen appearances and was a regular on “EMERGENCY!”

Randolph Mantooth, paramedic Johnny Gage on the show, said that director Robert Cinadar had it purposely crashed on camera. “Cinadar thought it was hard to film in, and the new big modular ambulances were coming out; in his mind, crashing it ensured that it would not come back,” Woyjeck says. “So, it was hit by a Lincoln Continental on camera.”

This was about 1973, and the history of the ambulance is uncertain for many years after. About 2018 the ambulance was found in a junk yard in Burbank, California. The Los Angeles County Fire Museum was able to make a deal with the owner, and it sat at the Fire Museum restoration shop for a few years. In 2021 the board decided to restore the ambulance and have it ready for the 50-year anniversary of the debut show of “EMERGENCY!” on January 14, 2022, he explains.

“Despite COVID getting in the way of the restoration on so many levels," Woyjeck says, "we were able to do a complete frame-off restoration, with every nut and bolt painted, plated, repaired or replaced, and we met our deadline.”

•1974 Paramedic Squad 51 — Arguably the most famous

paramedic squad and Chrysler product on earth. It is responsible for bringing the fictional paramedics, Mantooth and Roy DeSoto (Kevin Tighe), to the nation in the early 1970s via “EMERGENCY!”

“Paramedics were a new concept in the early 1970s, and through the TV show they were to become a household name. They have saved countless lives in the last 50 years; no other TV show has been so instrumental in saving so many lives," he says.

Squad 51 was custom built by Universal Studios according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department specifications at the time. This rig has a 440-cd engine, automatic transmission and dual rear tires.

At the end of filming, the paramedic squad vehicle was donated to the Los Angeles County Fire department where it was shuffled between stations and eventually moved to the training facility. In 1999, it was donated to the Los Angeles County Fire Museum, which did a frame-off restoration the same year.

The engine was rebuilt by Ted Schaper at Carl & Harry’s repair shop, and the body was painted by a company in Santa Fe Springs. Paul Schneider led the restoration.

“It’s by far our most popular piece,” Woyjeck says. “We usually get more than 40,000 views on our social media when we feature it.”

•2006 Ford Truck — The newest piece in collection, this is

one of the two crew “buggies” that were used by the ill-fated Granite Mountain Hotshot crew.

“Each of the 19 fallen firefighters will be missed by many; they were fathers, brothers, sons, uncles and cousins,” Woyjeck says, noting that this was the largest loss of firefighters lives in a single incident since 9/11.

All of Woyjeck’s children grew up familiar with the museum. “From the time they could walk, and maybe before, they would come with me to the museum. My oldest son, Kevin, knew from day one that he wanted to be a firefighter, just like me. He would work at the museum, as his school schedule would allow.”

When he graduated from high school, Kevin earned his EMT and worked for an ambulance company for a while, then went to work on a wildland firefighting crew in Rapid City, South Dakota. After finishing a season there, he returned home to Southern California to attend the Cal Fire Wildland Academy and the El Camino Structure Fire Academy.

“Once he finished these programs, Kevin had his eyes set on paramedic school, but he decided that he wanted to do one more season as a wildland firefighter,” Woyjeck recalls. He was hired by the Granite Mountain Hotshots of Prescott, Arizona, in early April 2013. On June 30, 2013 he was one of the 19 wildland firefighters killed in the Yarnell wildfire. He was the ninth firefighter in the family.

After the deaths of the Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew, the buggies were scheduled for auction in Prescott. “The trucks had become excess property, as the ill-fated crew was not going to be replaced. Before going to auction, the city of Prescott reached out to see if any other crews would have a use for the trucks, but there were no takers.”

The museum was almost done with the construction of the new fire museum in Bellflower when they went to auction. Woyjeck remembers: “I was thinking, ‘What a fitting piece of fire service history to put on display at our new facility.’ I presented the idea of purchasing the trucks to our board and got permission to see if we could purchase not one but both of the crew trucks. The last thing we wanted was to see them cut up or turned into a food truck or worse.”

The museum was the only bidder; a 7–0 vote by the Prescott City Council accepted the $25,000 bid for both trucks. One truck is on display in at the fire museum in Bellflower, and the second is on loan to the Hall of Flame Museum in Phoenix. Woyjeck says, “We are hoping that some day Prescott will have a dedicated place to showcase one of the buggies and celebrate the heroism of those young men.”

The museum is open to the public Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admission is $5 per person; children 12 and under, active military and firefighters are admitted free. Retired firefighters give the tours. For more information, see lacountyfiremuseum.com
