Barrett-Jackson Holds First Houston Auction September 16–18 written by David M. Brown Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, is on its way to Texas, led by early consignments of two distinguished sports cars: a 2019 Ford GT and the 1979 Porsche 928 that starred in the film Risky Business. The inaugural Texas event for the Scottsdale-based company will be held in Houston at the NRG Center September 16–18. The docket will feature a wide range of vintage cars, customs, supercars, late-model vehicles as well as authentic automobilia pieces. “We’re incredibly excited to head out to Houston this fall for our first collector car auction in Texas,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Enthusiasts across the region, especially Texans, have a deep passion for collector cars. There’s an unmistakable car culture in Texas, and we’re looking forward to fueling that passion with our inaugural Houston Auction in September.” A 350-acre complex with 26,000 parking spaces, the NRG Center is just six miles from the Houston Galleria with its restaurants and shopping, and offers 706,000-plus square feet of contiguous single-level exhibit space. “We are excited to be the inaugural Texas site to host Barrett-Jackson Car Auctions,” says Mark Miller, general manager of NRG Park. “We are happy to add this to our list of high-profile events.” The 2019 Ford GT develops 647 horsepower and is paired with a 7-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox, good for 0–60 sprints in 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 217 mph. Nine D.H. Lawrence paintings seized by Scotland Yard almost a century ago from a London art gallery will be displayed at a ticketed event inside a luxury Paradise Valley home, beginning August 16. Considered obscene by a British law still apparently in effect, the oil paintings, in pastoral, mythological settings, celebrate nudity, physicality and raw sexuality and suggest references to the great English writer’s tempestuous private life.

Known to Lawrence enthusiasts worldwide, the works are the property of Bob Sahd, owner of the RC Gorman Navajo Gallery, 7116 E. Main Street, in Old Town Scottsdale. Sahd owns 15 galleries nationwide specializing in the work of the celebrated Native American artist, who was born in Chinle, Arizona, in 1931. He died in 2005.
Taos Tranquility and the Lash of London
The Sahd family have stewarded the Lawrence paintings for decades at their historic Hotel La Fonda in Taos, New Mexico. “The showing in this beautiful Paradise Valley home kicks off a world tour for the artworks,” he says. “We are looking at sharing them with the world.”
Mabel Dodge Sterne Luhan, the Buffalo, New York, socialite and arts patron, welcomed Lawrence and his wife, Frieda, to her Taos home on September 11, 1922, the author’s 37th birthday. After moving to Taos in 1917, she attracted a group of artists to her circle, including Georgia O’Keeffe and Lady Dorothy Brett.
Author of novels such as Sons and Lovers (1913), Women in Love (1915) and the very controversial, and also once banned, Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928), as well as short stories, essays and travel books, the globetrotting Lawrence (1885–1930) and wife Frieda visited the thriving arts town 70 miles north of Santa Fe three times during the early 1920s, staying a total of 18 months.
Lawrence later recalled the life-changing significance of the New Mexico visit: “In the magnificent fierce morning of New Mexico, one sprang awake, a new part of the soul woke up suddenly and the old world gave way to the new.” New Mexico and the Southwest were revelations of light and color, a dramatic contrast to his bleak Nottinghamshire, England, mining youth, dark, cold, dreary and smudged with coal dust: “the vast amphitheatre of lofty, indomitable desert . . . What Splendour!”

The eccentric but generous Luhan gifted the Lawrences 176 acres of land 20 miles north of town, the Kiowa Ranch, named for the ancient Native American trail still used by the Taos Pueblo in the area. In return, Frieda gave Mabel the original manuscript of Sons and Lovers. She later willed the ranch to the University of New Mexico (UNM) as a public memorial to Lawrence, and it has become one of the area’s major attractions, now known as the D.H Lawrence Ranch. Here his ashes, so goes one story, were mixed in with the concrete in an altar of a small chapel honoring the writer. After leaving Taos, the Lawrences continued to travel extensively and returned to England, where he showed his paintings at the Dorothy Warren Gallery, including the nine being exhibited in Paradise Valley: A Holy Family, Dance Sketch, Fight with Amazon, Flight Back to Paradise, Nymphs and Fauns, Rape of the Sabine, Red Willow Trees, Summer Dawn and The Kiss. The University of Texas has three others from this exhibition, including Boccaccio Story and Resurrection, at its Humanities Research Centre in Austin. Private collectors have others.
defended the book, including E.M. Forster, Helen Gardner, Raymond Williams and Norman St. John-Stevas. On November 2, Penguin was ruled “not guilty,” widening opportunities for publishing explicit material in the United Kingdom. Soon after the Warren Gallery in London’s upscale Mayfair community opened the exhibition, Scotland Yard seized thirteen of the twenty-five paintings following a complaint filed by one of the approximately 13,000 viewers who came out to see them. Although prominent citizens defended the works, they were returned to Lawrence with a warning to remove them from England or risk their destruction. Hearing of this, Mabel Luhan brought nine of them to Taos for safekeeping. Although Lawrence is not remembered for his painting, it provided great pleasure, beginning in 1926. Apparently, Maria Huxley, wife of author Aldous Huxley (Brave New World, 1931) gave him four canvases, and Lawrence continued to paint until he died of tuberculosis in Vence, France, on March 1, 1930.
At the time of the show, Lawrence was being closely watched by government, press and public: Lady Chatterley’s Lover, published a year before, was considered obscene under British law because of its ripe vocabulary and frank references to sexual acts.
After his death, Frieda returned to Taos with her lover Angelo Ravagli, with whom she had been having an affair since the middle 1920s. They married in 1950. When Frieda died six years later, in August of 1956, her estate, including the Lawrence paintings to be displayed in Paradise Valley, passed to Ravagli.
In fact, it was not until 1960 that the Penguin Books unexpurgated edition appeared in England, and the publisher had to defend it against the standards of the 1959 Obscene Publications Act, which required a demonstration of “literary merit.” Fortunately, distinguished English cultural historians and critics

Described as the “acme of motor car perfection,” the supercharged 1928 Mercedes-Benz is just one of 146 examples of the firm’s flagship automobile that was acquired by Al Jolson, the Marx brothers, and land-speed record holder, Sir Malcolm Campbell, between 1927 and 1930, explains Rupert Banner, Bonhams Group Motoring director.
The S-Type joins other fine collector motor cars, including a 1930 Bucciali Tav 30 Torpédo Sport Type Cannes ‘La Marie’, a one-off chassis showcasing the Bucciali brothers’ technical innovations, including Paul-Albert’s front-wheel drive patent. And, a restored 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Sport Cabriolet Décapotable, is one of only two surviving bespoke T26 Record Cabriolets designed by the celebrated carrossier, Figoni et Falaschi.
Ferdinand Porsche engineered the versatile car, which could perform superbly on the racetrack, at hill climbs or for inspiring road driving. In fact, the car won its class when it debuted at the Nürburgring. The Roots Supercharger could boost power from the 6.8-litre engine from 120 bhp to 180 bhp in seconds. “The supercharged S-Type is one of the legendary models of the Mercedes-Benz brand. This distinctive sports tourer has been part of the classic car community in America for more than five decades, always being awarded, prized and coveted,” Banner says. “Freshly repainted in the strikingly beautiful black guise, its sale provides a ‘baton-passing’ generational opportunity for a new collector to continue to show or tour this wonderful Mercedes.”
Two Italian classics from the ’50s are a 1952 Ferrari 212 Europa Cabriolet and a 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America. Featuring coachwork by Carrozzeria Ghia, the 1952 Geneva and Torino Auto Show car is Ferrari-Classiche Red Book certified and retains matching numbers. With coachwork by Pinin Farina, the Lancia is one of only 181 left-hand-drive examples of the sports car. And, from an actor who has given us many classics is Tom Hanks’ “silver bullet” 1992 33-foot Airstream Trailer.

Earlier that week, Wednesday, August 11, is the Connect2Cars, with an 8 a.m. breakfast at the Bayonet Black Horse clubhouse, featuring a “morning show”-type interview of industry figures. They are a 1967 Shelby 427 “Semi Competition” Cobra; 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster CSX2495; and SFM5R538, the winningest 1965 Shelby GT350R Fastback ever. An estimated 700 collector vehicles are expected as well as approximately 100 vintage and antique motorcycles. Other headline cars include a 1936 Delahaye Type 135 Competition Court Teardrop Coupe; more than 80 collector cars of “Big Al’s Collection”; a new Triumph Scrambler 1200 Steve McQueen Edition; and the 2004 Shelby Cobra Concept, “Daisy,” powered by a 6.4-liter, 605-horse 40-valve aluminum V-10.
“The GT350R is fresh off a two-year concours restoration that garnered it a Division 2 Gold Award at the SAAC event in Indiana this past February with only 14 points deducted, after which it was returned to Thoroughbred Restorations to have even those deductions corrected,” Morton explains.
One of only 29 427 Cobra S/Cs built, the 1967 Semi Competition Cobra CSX3045 is the product of an exacting restoration by Robin Automotive in northern California, explains David Morton, manager of Communications and Event Marketing for Walworth, Wisconsin-based Mecum Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction company. The celebrated CSX3045 has won numerous awards, including first place in Competition Shelby Popular Vote at SAAC-5 and a Gold Award at the 1998 SAAC Convention.

Begun in 1950, the Concours first showed new cars, based on the European model, but the event began to focus on collector cars in 1955. The 1970 Porsche 917K, chassis no. 917 031/026, contested the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans in signature blue and orange Gulf livery, and was used in Steve McQueen’s Le Mans movie. Often regarded as ‘The World’s Greatest Sports Car’, the legend has a flat-12 cylinder, air-cooled engine and was dominant for three seasons of World Championship racing.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Returns August 12–15 written by David M. Brown The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion returns to historic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca August 12–15, this year honoring 55 years of Ford in the Trans-Am Pony Wars.
Award for Excellence in each category; the Gary Byrd Foundation award for a pre-war car; and the Henry Ford Trophy for the best of that marque.
Historic auto racing has been central to Monterey Car Week for 47 years, and this year the track marks its 64th year providing automotive and motorcycle racing events. Every August, approximately 70,000 fans of historic racing visit the circuit where more than 500 historic and periodcorrect cars from nearly every era compete and are displayed.
In addition, the Phil Remington Trophy is given to the best mechanic; the Stand 21 Trophy for the car with the most period-authentic look; the John Fitch Excellence Award for the best Corvette; and a Best Paddock Display. Finally, the Bonhams Cup is awarded to the driver who best exemplifies the spirit of the event in featured morning race groups.
One week earlier, 300-plus cars will participate in the Monterey Pre-Reunion Races, August 7 and 8. A day before, August 6, Monterey Classic Car Week officially begins when historic race cars leave the track with a police escort for a Race Car Show in downtown Monterey.
Also scheduled are Q&As with special guests of the Motorsports Reunion and autograph sessions with racing notables. “The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is the largest event of the week, and is the only one that puts these amazing authentic historic race cars on the track to do what they were originally constructed to do, and that’s compete at speed,” says Barry Toepke, director of Heritage Events and PR of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “It is an automotive museum springing to life with over 500 cars in 14 race groups ranging from 1911 to more recent years taking to the race track.”
During the August 12–15 weekend, competitors will race in these groups: Pre-1920 exhibition race; 1966-1985 Formula One; 1920-1951 Racing Cars; 1947-1955 Sports Racing and GT; 1955-1964 GT; 1963-1966 GT over 2500cc; 1973-1981 FIA, IMSA, GT, GTX, AAGT, GTU; FIA Manufacturers Championship; 1981-1991 IMSA GTO, GTP, Trans-Am; 1955-1961 Sports Racing under/over 2100cc; 1961-1966 GT under 2500cc; 1966-1972 Trans-Am; 1983-2016 Endurance Legends; and 1963-1978 IndyCar.

American Speed Festival At M1 Concourse is September 30 - October 3 American Speed Festival (ASF) is an international celebration of speed featuring the Past, Present, and Future cars, and stars. Each day features unique motorsports experiences and culinary adventures. The new event will showcase excellence in automotive engineering and design and celebrate driving at speed, including the thrill of motorsport competition. The site launched in June and is headed by co-founders Chris Bright and Aaron Laliberte.

“On days meals aren’t provided, there are fully stocked pantries that our guest families have access to,” Ashjian says. He notes that families pay nothing to stay; some remain for just a few days, while others stay for weeks or even months, depending on the severity of their child’s illness or injury.
“Because of the pandemic, we were forced to cancel many of our in-person fundraising events in 2020 and 2021,” Ashjian says. Support through our raffles helps ensure we can continue to provide a home away from home for families while they go through such a difficult time in their lives.”
