Pavilions Rock ’N Roll Car Show Rocks Again written by David M. Brown On October 2, the world’s oldest weekly car show restarted its popular Saturday evening shows, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Pavilions at Talking Stick. Scottsdale’s Larry Oliver restarted the 31-year-old Rock ’N Roll Car Show on May 15 at the shopping center, 9120 East Talking Stick Way (Indian Bend Road), in the Salt River Pima – Indian Community. The venue is just off the Loop 101 north of the Shell station near the McDonald’s. “It’s a great location and wonderful people,” says Oliver. “You can get every type food that you could want at the center, and there’s also a movie theater, Home Depot, Target, car and tire repair –– all within walking distance.” The show welcomes all cars, classic and new; no awards are given, and there is no cost to enter. Valley resident Mark Kramer, a Ferrari collector and original owner of the McDonald’s at the Pavilions, founded the show in November 1989. The following April, it became an official event. Kramer died in March after a long illness. Because of the onset of COVID-19 in early 2020, the event was discontinued. Concerned, Oliver called Marty DeRito, the managing partner of Phoenix-based DeRito Partners, which manages The Pavilions. That was in December 2020. “I’ve been attending it for 20 years and met Mark a few times. I heard dozens of rumors about the show and wanted to know what was going on. Marty told me the company wanted to reopen but did not know anything about car shows,” recalls Oliver, who has organized many, including the one for Cherokee Casino near Tulsa, Oklahoma. “I am a car nut and

also a classic car broker for the last 15 to 20 years,” he adds. Marty and Oliver met with center’s operations manager, Chuck Carlise, who is also the president and partner at the firm. “They asked me to manage the event, and I said ‘no’ but would help. About 30 days later, they asked me again, and I said I would think about it. After another 30 days, I said ‘yes,’ knowing they had no one else and I, and many others, wanted it to re-open.” Oliver scheduled the first 20 new shows this year from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. because the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community approved the permit but with limited numbers and special rules. He notes that for the last month about 100 cars have participated, increasing to 130 most recently. “Changing to afternoons and evenings should double or triple that number,” he adds. Events change every week, and the event has had drawings on most weeks. Beginning October 2, a new DJ, “Wolfman Jack,” has hosted the event, and on October 30, “Trunk or Treat” night is being offered for the children. On November 13, the Pavilions Rock ’N Roll Car is holding a Tribute to Mark Kramer and unveiling a bronze commemorative plaque in his honor. “Like me, most of these car lovers have been coming to this show for over 20 years or more and know each other. Built in 1967, the five-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home, 6224 North 38th Street, has masonry and sandblasted masonry walls, vaulted ceilings and extensive windows. A sensitive update by Midcentury-Modern specialist Joel Contreras was completed two years ago, including millwork and cabinetry by highly respected Rysso Peters, Phoenix.
Built in 1967, the home has a two-car garage with additional slab parking spaces outside; a dining room; family room with a gas fireplace; and an office/den. The eat-in kitchen includes a breakfast bar; gas oven and cook-top; a pantry; and a kitchen island. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet and sitting room and the bathroom a separate shower and tub, double sinks and private toilet room.

Outside the family room is a covered patio, a children’s play area and a built-in BBQ. Zoja Pedenko, an Aazami Private Client Group associate co-brokering the property, says, “The location in the heart of Paradise Valley can’t be beat. It’s also near the restaurants and shopping in the Biltmore area and Scottsdale, the Valley’s great hiking and golf –– and all that Arizona has to offer.” Renovating and Celebrating The owners bought the house in November 2018 and completed the $1-million-plus remodel in December 2019. “We are big Mid-century Modern architecture fans,” the husband says. “We had seen a couple of Yaeger’s homes before, and this house was one of the best we had seen. When it came on the market, we just fell in love with it.” Their time in the house has confirmed their initial thoughts. “The views and the layout are impressive; we love how the bedrooms are far from the living space. It’s been a great family home for us and a great house to entertain in, too. We've had weddings, birthdays, you name it, here.” Although not connected with Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Volume XVIII, Number 09
West/Taliesin Associates in Scottsdale, Yaeger celebrates the master architect’s influence in his home designs. Among the many Valley homes he designed in the Valley was Senator Barry Goldwater’s in Paradise Valley, 1957/58. Yaeger died in 1994. “He has some astonishing luxury homes still standing in Phoenix/ Paradise Valley, and all I have seen share signature traits,” says Contreras, a self-taught designer for the last two decades and principal of Joel Contreras Design, Phoenix. “His homes clearly were influenced by Wright. He liked low pitches. His living rooms seem to all feature walls of glass with framed views. He used masonry for construction and concrete tile roofs. But, unlike Wright, he was a private person and didn’t care too much for the spotlight.” Contreras was also immediately attracted by the Yaegerdesigned home. “I liked its stature resting on this tall retaining fortress wall from the street, overlooking the city. I liked the observation patio that points to the Papago Buttes,” he says. “I liked the nods to Wright and the amount of glass and the use of shaded overhangs.” He also was thankful the home had undergone an extensive interior remodel about 2005. “I didn’t have to be a bad guy for either desiring to keep original items and fighting with clients or designing some new elements to the kitchen and bathrooms and appearing to be insensitive to preservationists,”

he says, noting that when working on the renovation of a noted historic property he likes to balance modernization and preservation. When the home was in escrow, Contreras questioned the owners, who had called him. He asked, “You know you have an architectural a masterpiece? And, you don’t plan on ruining it? They said, ‘Yes, this is why we called you first.’” The husband explains: “We wanted to modernize the home but still make it timeless. We wanted to make sure that if Yaeger came through the house today that he would love what we did. We tried to keep as many of the original touches to the house as possible, including the millwork in the living room and the hallway. It was very important to us.” Contreras says that “the hardest aspect to a noteworthy architectural home is always balancing careful preservation with continuously changing owner needs. The owners felt they needed more space, but I did not want to do an addition to the home unless we explored every avenue first. Instead, we were able to reconfigure the floor plan a bit to steal some spaces from back bedrooms to grow the master bathroom and closets.” When he is selected to remodel a historically significant design such as this one, he has two rules. One, keep the original architect/designer the star. “Do not try to overshadow him or her. Instead, honor him or her.” And, learn the language of the home. “Study the rules and then fill in the blanks if any of that language would be altered by the remodel.” The 11-month renovation included new electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning, with a programmable thermostat and smart home capabilities added. (dual pane), flooring and the roof. Assisting Contreras was Brock O'Neill, who helps the firm with drafting on interior and landscape plans. Brent Bessinger of Scottsdale’s Ox Construction was the builder. Much of the focus was updating the kitchen and the master bath. “We decided to vault the ceilings in the kitchen/dining space. The ceilings were very low and relatively easy to vault,” Contreras explains. In addition, some block walls were sandblasted to expose the concrete block/ aggregate. But, Contreras says, “I feel we kept all important aspects of Yaeger’s design.” Timelessness is priceless. “The majority of new homes represent the flavor of the moment, and most won’t stand the test of time,” Contreras says. “They won’t be preservation worthy in 50 years. This one has met that test and then some.” The details in the home are lost/ forgotten about today, he believes. “Another reason we don’t build like this is the expense. It would cost well more than the list price to duplicate this one-of-a-kind gem,” he says. Buying a Yaeger home or one by his contemporary Blaine Drake or Frank Lloyd Wright is buying an appreciating piece of art. Contreras: “It is owning a significant moment in history and knowing you are fortunate to live in it and steward it.” This beautifully renovated Paradise Valley home is offered at $4,250,000. Lotus has confirmed the price and full specification of the all-new Emira V6 First Edition. The car, fully loaded with a host of desirable technology, infotainment and comfort features plus unique badging, costs $103,915. The price in major European markets has also been released, including in Germany where the car is 111,330. Prices in other international markets, including USA and China, will be released in the coming weeks. Production of the Emira V6 First Edition will start in the spring, with the ‘i4’ four-cylinder First Edition arriving in the autumn. Matt Windle, Managing Director, Lotus Cars, commented: “The Emira is the most accomplished Lotus we've ever made, and to celebrate and reward our keenest early customers, we want to make the first cars extra special to own. The features have been carefully selected by our design team to make for a truly special and distinct First Edition.” The Emira is an all-new mid-engine premium sports car that perfectly embodies the ongoing transformation of the Lotus business and brand. It features all the hallmarks that the automotive world has come to expect from a Lotus – striking design, thrilling dynamic performance delivering best-in-class ride and handling, outstanding aerodynamics and an unrivalled experience ‘For The Drivers’.

Building on the legacy of the Elise, Exige and Evora, the Emira represents a quantum leap forward for Lotus. Those instantly recognisable brand signatures and core values have been combined with a paradigm shift in levels of practicality, comfort, functionality and technology. The Emira has been developed on a new lightweight bonded aluminium chassis – technology pioneered by Lotus and which remains an intrinsic part of the company’s sports car DNA. Powering the V6 First Edition is the much-loved and Lotus-honed 3.5-litre supercharged V6 engine, mid-mounted behind the two seats. Developing 400hp, it’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with a visible gearchange mechanism and hydraulic power-assisted steering. The car rides on 20-inch ultra-lightweight V-spoke forged alloy wheels. They’re diamond cut to create a premium two-tone finish, though silver or gloss black versions are available as a no-cost option. Two-piece brake discs with branded calipers are part of the First Edition spec, plus a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

The First Edition comes in one of six vibrant paint colours: Seneca Blue – which was seen at the car’s launch in July – plus Magma Red, Hethel Yellow, Dark Verdant, Shadow Grey and Nimbus Grey. More colours will be available during 2022. Exterior details include LED lights all round, a titanium exhaust finisher, heated power-fold door mirrors and rear parking sensors. The Lower Black Pack is fitted as standard, which means the front bumper air blades, front splitter, side sills and rear diffuser are all in finished in gloss black. There are seven interior colour choices, all available at no extra cost. They are red, black, grey and tan Nappa leather, as well as black Alcantara with either red, yellow or grey stitching. Satin chrome trim finishers, white interior mood lighting and Lotus-branded sill kick plates complete the premium look. The heated seats feature 12-way adjustability and two memory presets linked to the door mirrors (driver’s seat only). Climate control, cruise control, keyless start and selectable drive modes are all included. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation (in selected markets) are integrated into the Emira V6 First Edition, supported by Bluetooth and USB/12v sockets. The 10-channel/340W premium audio system has been developed in partnership with respected British brand KEF and includes DAB digital radio. All functions are accessed through a 10.25-inch centrally mounted touch-screen, with driver feedback through a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster ahead of the multi-function steering wheel. Three more option packs are fitted as standard to the car, making four in total. The Drivers Pack gives customer the choice of Tour or Sport suspension with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport tyres, or Sport suspension with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

The Design Pack adds privacy glass, sports pedals, a black Alcantara headliner, and the choice of black, red, yellow or silver painted brake callipers. Lotus-branded footwell mats are also included. The Convenience Pack adds front parking sensors, rear reversing camera, rain-sensing wipers with aero blades, auto-dimming mirrors and a rear luggage storage net. Options available at extra cost include a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shift ($2,460 / $3,013 in Germany); and the Black Pack, which colours the roof, cantrails, mirror backs, rear Lotus badge and exhaust finisher ($1,640 / $1,588 in Germany). Production of the Lotus Emira V6 First Edition will start in the spring, with the ‘i4’ four-cylinder First Edition arriving later in the autumn. Brown A 1930 Duesenberg Murphy Butterfly Dual Cowl Phaeton owned by Ross Meyer was Best in Show – Pre War, and Peter Mullin’s 1951 Delehaye Model 235 was Best in Show – Post War at the 2021 San Marino Motor Classic August 21 and 22. The annual event attracted 5,000 classic car fans, and 450 cars to the city just south of Pasadena and home of the famed Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.
On Saturday afternoon, a dozen celebrated automotive artists displayed their recent works at the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) Pavilion at the San Marino Motor Classic. That evening, the Symphony of Cars Gala took place, also in Lacy Park. While the participants had their food and drinks, they also enjoyed 15 classic cars, and Gary Tole and the Legends of Swing Orchestra played music from their eras. The event was sponsored by David Lee, Hing Wa Lee Jewelers. Proceeds benefit the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, the Rotary Club of San Marino and Cancer Support Community Pasadena.
“We have cars participating from all over the country, and very few local shows have that,” says Aaron Weiss, chairman of the 501(c)3 not-for-profit event, the premier regional automotive exhibition in the San Gabriel Valley and one of the finest concours-level exhibitions in Southern California. He notes that winners this year also traveled from Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Jersey and other states.
On Sunday, judges selected seven award-winners as well as first-, second- and third-place awards per class in 45 classes. VIPs had a gourmet luncheon and beverages while watching the awards ceremony.
Successor to the Los Angeles Concours d’Elegance, the San Marino Motor Classic was established in 2011 by Weiss and co-founders Ben Reiling and Paul Colony and is held in 30-acre Lacy Park in San Marino. Volume XVIII, Number 09

In addition, Gary Wales’ 1920 La Bestioni Beast of Turin 14 Liter Racer received the Mayor’s Award; Ron Siess the Meguiar’s Award for his 1971 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible; the Petersen Automotive Museum the San Marino Rotary Club Award for its 1959 Scimitar Hard Top Coupe; and Jason Russo, the Classic Car Capital Award for his 1982 Lamborghini Countach. ago to help young people stay involved in agriculture for their careers. Proceeds from this year’s event benefited the 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA) and California State Fair. In 25 years, they have awarded more than $1 million toward these and other agriculture programs.
Approximately 2,500 people attended, and 330 antique, classic and vintage motorcars, trucks, farm equipment, motorcycles and amphicars were shown and judged in 30 classes for vehicles 1973 vintage and earlier.
Judged classes included Antiques, Vintage Race Cars, America Cars 1962–1973, European Sports Cars through 1973 and individual marque classes. Special Awards were also given. This year’s FFA Award went to Dave & Susan Buchanan of Menlo Park for their 1952 Siata 208 SC Spider Corsa Bertone. And, the 4-H Award was given to Bob Guimarin of Valley Springs for his 1929 Ford A Mail Truck.
In 2020, because of COVID-19, the full event was not held, but 100 cars participated in a Tour through Calaveras County and finished at the winery where each car drove across the stage.

Brown photos National Museum of the United States Army The “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”: On November 11, 1918, the Armistice declared the end of hostilities for World War I, “the war to end all wars,” although fighting continued throughout the day –– a dark premonition of World War II, which began just 21 years later. In the United States, Armistice Day became Veterans Day in 1954, signed by President Eisenhower, a West Pointer, Army veteran and Supreme Allied Commander in WWII.

To honor its members, past and present, the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, reopened June 14, the Army’s 246th birthday, after being closed temporarily as a result of the pandemic. The official opening was November 2020.

This is the first comprehensive national museum to display and interpret the Army’s history by telling stories through the lives of its soldiers. The displays and interactive-learning exhibits illustrate the Army’s role in building and defending the United States as well as Army humanitarian missions and technological and medical breakthroughs built on Army ingenuity, explains Susan Smullen, its public affairs officer. In addition to its three galleries and exhibits, the museum features a multisensory 300-degree theater, a tranquil rooftop garden and over more than 1,300 historic treasures rarely or never-before-seen by the public. “This is an up-close and personal museum designed to invite

History: Manufactured in 1917, this tank was nicknamed the “Five of Hearts” after the insignia was painted on the side of the turret. It is French built and was given to the American Tank Corps. The tank was assigned to Company C, 344th Tank Battalion, American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Tank Brigade, under Lt. Col. George S. Patton, Jr., and saw action in the St. Mihiel Salient and the Toul, before participating in the MeuseArgonne Offensive. Eventually, the tank was fired upon at close range, causing multiple drivers to be wounded and the tank to stall. It would be retrieved the day after battle. It was returned in 1919 to Camp Meade in Maryland, where it remained until 2017 before its transfer to the National Museum.

Historical Significance: The “Five of Hearts” is the only documented FT-17 tank to be used by U.S. forces in World War I. The FT-17 was a revolutionary design that the U.S. Army adopted as the basis for America’s first tank, the Model 1917. This tank served as a symbol of the early Army Armor branch and was preserved at Fort Meade, the original training location for Army tankers. •“Cobra King” Sherman Tank (“Global War, Technology and Tactics”)–– The M4 Sherman was used 1941–1945 and its successor, the M4A3 “Jumbo” Sherman, 1944–1945.
display in Germany after doing much research. In 2009, the U.S. Army Center of Military History shipped Cobra King back to the U.S. to be restored. Historical Significance: The Sherman was the great American tank of World War II. It was employed in all theaters of operation where its reliability and mobility allowed it to spearhead armor attacks, provide infantry support and as artillery. In 1944, the Army introduced the M4A3E2 Sherman “Jumbo” tank, weighing 38 tons.
Artifact History: At 1650 hours on December 26, 1944, this Cobra King, manufactured earlier that year, led the 4th Armored Division column that would break through the German line during the Battle of the Bulge. This tank was also sent to support Task Force Baum, the ill-fated secret attempt to rescue U.S. POWs from a camp near Hammelburg, Germany, March 27 and 28, 1945.
In the Siege of Bastogne, the tank was crucial for victory. On December 16, 1944, Hitler launched an offensive to recapture the port city of Antwerp. German forces were ordered to attack the Allied lines in Belgium and Luxembourg, with the aim of crossing the Meuse River and recapturing the city. The seven roads that led in and out of the Belgian town of Bastogne made it crucial to German lines of communication and their westward advance towards the river.
There is physical evidence that shows the Cobra King experienced a brief internal fire and explosions that damaged the interior. The tank was known to be abandoned after the raid, and the tank’s whereabouts became unknown. In 2004, Army Chaplain Keith Goode found the “First in Bastogne” tank on

FT-17 Renault “Five of Hearts”
•M3A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle (“Changing the World, Iraq”) –– The Bradley was introduced in 1983 and remains in service today. What year this particular vehicle was manufactured is unknown. Artifact History: A Troop was part of the charge from Kuwait to Baghdad, Iraq, in this fighting vehicle. Their route brought them through various Iraqi cities, which led to resistance from organizations loyal to Saddam Hussein. By April 3, 2003, the troops were given orders to screen Objective Montgomery, directly west of Baghdad. They were able to seize Objective Montgomery but were attacked by two enemy tactical vehicles. Baghdad was eventually isolated and encircled with various elements of the 3d Infantry Division, setting the stage for the initial Thunder Runs on April 5, 2003, into the city. Historical Significance: This vehicle was a part of the charge from Kuwait to Baghdad, Iraq, in March and April 2003.

“Cobra King” Sherman Tank
•1918 Standard B Liberty Truck (“Army & Society, Innovation and Invention’’) –– The Liberty was used from 1918–1940. The museum’s truck was built in 1918. Artifact History: In 1918, the Army had more than 294 makes and body types of motor vehicles. To standardize its fleet, the Army organized a committee of 50 engineers who met with Army officers to design a new three-ton cargo truck. The result was the Standard B Liberty Truck, a vehicle with interchangeable parts manufactured in different factories that simplified maintenance in the field. Fifteen companies assembled the trucks, while more than 150 manufacturers made parts. Despite 10,000-plus being produced in 1918 and 1919, few made it overseas in time for service during World War I. The use of trucks revolutionized warfare as they could economically haul supplies in rugged battlefield conditions. Historical Significance: When the Army’s transcontinental motor convoy embarked on a 3,251-mile journey from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco, California, in the summer of 1919, Liberty Trucks were a part of the caravan. The trip took 62 days at an average speed of only six miles per hour. One young officer on the convoy, Eisenhower, would remember this trip 37 years later, when as president, he helped to create the Interstate Highway System –– thinking first of

national defense and secondarily of expediting the family summer vacation. •LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel) (Global War, Technology and Tactics) –– One of the key transportation craft that won the war, these remarkable boats were produced from 1941 through the 1950s. This one can be dated to 1942 or 1943. Artifact History: This boat was located by Overlord Research LLC, on the Island of Wight, England, and acquired by the company. It was transported to Hughes Marine Service in Danville, Virginia, where it was restored. This LCVP is one of fewer than a dozen surviving landing crafts from World War II. This vessel is a confirmed participant of the D-Day landings, but its exact history and area of use is unknown. Historical Significance: The Higgins assault boat landed more Allied troops on beaches in Europe and the Pacific than all other types of landing craft combined. These small boats could carry 36 combat-loaded troops or a light vehicle (jeep) and 12 fully equipped men. The flat-bottomed barged boat’s structure allowed it to slide onto a landing beach, lower the front ramp and discharge its load and quickly turn around in the surf. The LCVP allowed for transport of troops to the beaches of Normandy quickly, a

feat that wouldn’t have been possible without the LCVP because of the shallow coastal depths. •HMMWV (“HUMVEE”) SN #000001 (Concourse) –– Still in use, the first vehicles were produced in 1983, including this one. Artifact History: This HMMWV was transferred to the Army Artifact Collection from the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. The HMMWV is the successor to the venerable Jeeps used from World War II through the early 1980s. The Army initiated development of the HMMWV in 1979 with the final contract awarded in 1983. The HMMWV first saw combat during Operation Just Cause in 1989. The HMMWV vehicle has been produced in a variety of different variants including cargo carrier, ambulance, troop carrier, air defense variant, radar dish carrier, prime mover, armament carrier, etc.

During the Global War on Terrorism, where there were no front lines, HMMWVs were attacked with great frequency and increasing loss of life. This led to the creation of “Up-armored” HMMWVs, which were modified to accept armor and a turret for a mounted weapon. The HMMWV is now being phased out because it cannot meet all of the requirements of the modern battlefield. The initial award for its successor, the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, was awarded in 2015. Historical Significance: The HMMWV has seen combat and use around the world in every American conflict since 1983 and has become an important part of the Army’s public image. HMMWVs are critical to the Army’s ability to quickly move soldiers, supplies, equipment, and firepower around the battlefield. HMMWVs were so successful that they have also been used by numerous allies, other countries, and have even been developed into a civilian variant.

LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)
•Wright Model A “Military” Flyer (“Army and Society, Innovation and Invention”) Artifact History: This aircraft was built in 2007 as an exact reproduction of the Wright Model A Flyer built for Army trials held at Fort Myer, Virginia, in September 1908. This was the first U.S. Army airplane test evaluation conducted by the Signal Corps. Historical Significance: This is the first military airplane used in the world. However, no Model A was bought by the United States Army. In 1891, Samuel Langley built a steam-powered model of an aerodrome that flew for three-quarters of a mile. The Army contracted Langley for a full-size version, but that venture ended in failure. After the Wright brothers flew a heavier-than-air machine at Kitty Hawk in 1903, the Army challenged inventors to provide an aircraft that could carry two individuals (a pilot and a passenger), fly 40 miles an hour, and remain airborne for an hour. In 1908, Orville Wright brought his aircraft to Fort Myer, Virginia, for Army demonstrations. He flew several test flights accompanied by an observer. On September 17, the machine crashed, sparing Orville but killing 1st Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge,

the first American soldier to lose his life in an air mishap. The Wright design was improved and trials resumed at Fort Myer in 1909. Orville completed a pair of flights that exceeded the War Department’s endurance and speed requirements, and the Army agreed to purchase the plane for $30,000. That aircraft is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. •UH-1B Iroquois Helicopter, “The Huey” (“Cold War, Vietnam War”) Artifact History: “The Huey” was built 1960–2001, and this aircraft, manufactured circa 1964, was used as a gunship during the Vietnam War by the 129th Assault Helicopter Company. Between March 1966 and February 1969, this helicopter was damaged or shot down seven times and was retired from service in September 1969. Historical Significance: The “Huey” was the key helicopter of the Vietnam War. HU-1 helicopters arrived in Vietnam in 1962 as aerial ambulances. The designation was later changed to UH-1, for utility helicopters, but the nickname remained. The Huey was upgraded into a larger version, the UH-1H, with a more powerful engine, in 1963.

UH-1B Iroquois Helicopter, “The Huey”
It was a versatile aircraft flying a wide variety of missions including air assault, cargo transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, electronic warfare and ground attack. The UH-1B can hold up to two pilots and seven passengers or three stretchers with three additional wounded in the seats. The helicopter can also be configured with a rescue hoist, auxiliary fuel tanks, spotlights and mission kits.
