You can now order the Ariel Atom 4 at Forman Motorworks, which has been offering superlative performance cars and other services to customers worldwide for 20 years.

“The all-new car is a clean-sheet redesign from the very successful Ariel Atom 3 series cars,” says owner Franz Forman. “Only three parts have carried over: the brake pedal, the clutch pedal and the fuel cap!” he says.

“Reliability is also outstanding as we utilize the all-new Honda powertrains in every Atom,” he explains. The 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine from the 10th generation Civic Type-R powers the rear wheels, achieving 320 horsepower and 310 lb./ft. torque. This engine combines low-speed tractability with race-engine dynamics. In addition, the fabricated stainless exhaust and ram air system are mated to the engine as well as a dedicated electronic control unit tuned by Ariel.

If you equip your Ariel Atom with the optional performance package, the car gains 30 horsepower. But instead of weighing 3,200-pounds, similar to most conventional cars, the Atom weighs about 1,400 pounds; that’s a spectacular power-toweight ratio of 4 lbs./hp. Forman notes that this would be the equivalent of the new 992 Porsche GT3 with 800 horsepower! As a result, the 6-speed manual shifts you from 0–60 mph in a hypercar-level 2.8 seconds and 0–100 mph in 6.8 seconds.

A race-inspired inboard JRi suspension keeps the Ariel Atom stiff and steady on the track or the highway, with double

unequal-length wishbones, pushrod-operated inboard dampers, adjustable outboard rod ends and lightweight fabricated uprights. You adjust for ride height, toe and camber to quickly set the car up for daily driver or racing. “This is single-seater technology made usable and affordable,” Forman says.

Other world-class components are the adjustable front/rear bias brakes, twin master cylinders, composite bodywork, alloy adjustable pedals, four-point harnesses and a competition steering rack. JT Janssen, operations manager at Forman Motorworks, explains that more stability has been engineered into the Ariel Atom 4. “It’s a very planted feeling and more stable at higher speeds. The carbon fiber aero/wings package is also much more effective in generating downforce as well. And, it also doesn’t hurt that it makes it look like a miniature F1 car!”

And that’s an important consideration, the sensation of driving hard, feeling the road. “Especially with the growth of electrics, hybrids and the number of ‘systems’ in new cars being released by the major OEMs such as Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini, the new batch of sports cars and supercars is getting faster but simultaneously, and, quite frankly, more boring to drive as well,” Forman says.

He asks: “Electric power steering, restrictive stability control systems, lane-keep assist, braking assist, etc. Are we driving our own cars anymore or is a software engineer at Ferrari driving the car? The Ariel Atom is for people who love to drive, who value the correlation between direct driver input and

subsequent vehicle response. It’s for drivers who want to feel everything through the steering wheel, the suspension and the chassis.”

Forman adds: “This car is not designed to replace your Porsche; it’s designed to complement it. I’ve spent years driving 6-speed Porsche GT cars, and I absolutely love them, but the Atom provides a level of rawness and feel that makes a GT3 feel like a Cadillac CTS.”

Forman to the Forefront

Forman Motorworks was the first Ariel dealer in the country, starting with Ariel North America in 2009; since then, the business has sold 180-plus new and used Ariel vehicles. Most clients are car collectors, enthusiasts with several specialty cars, adrenaline junkies and track enthusiasts, Forman explains.

“We frequently hear the comment from our older buyers that they wonder if they’re too old for such a car,” Forman says. “But what they don’t realize is how many clients we have in their 70s and 80s who buy a new Atom because they’ve been on sport bikes their entire lives and still want the thrill with less risk. For instance, the wife has finally laid down the

law about time to sell the Ducati!”

He adds: “Many of our clients have owned three or more Atoms as they will sell one to experience something else and then come back to the brand because nothing else delivers on the driving experience the same way an Atom does for anywhere near the money.”

Bespoke is almost a necessity now for the specialty-car market. “It’s not enough anymore just to have the newest supercar; it’s all about the ‘spec,’” Forman says.

Forman Motorworks, for sure, knows one-off. Starting in 2015 with the introduction of the Atom 3S, the highest-selling Atom of the previous generation, his staff became creative on unique builds: paint to sample, carbon fiber, bespoke chassis, wheel colors and more.

“The Atom is one of the most special vehicles to customize, and most buyers will end up with a one-of-one,” he says, noting that Forman Motorworks has built many cars in various Lamborghini, McLaren, Porsche and Audi colors. “The design phase of the process is really fun to go through and makes the anticipation of receiving your new car all the more special.”

So, the wait is worth it, Forman says. “These days it’s taking more than a year just to order a new 911 or Huracán, so 15–18 months for a custom-built Atom 4 really isn’t long at all.”

As car enthusiasts, we all have that one dream car that captures our imagination and fuels our passion. For me, that car has always been the Ariel Atom. Ever since I saw Jeremy Clarkson put an early version of the Atom through its paces on Top Gear back in 2004, I knew I had to have one.

While most people covet Lamborghinis, Ferraris and RollsRoyces, I was drawn to the Atom’s rawness, lack of tech and incredible acceleration. This is a car that is designed to be a spartan high-performance track toy, and it delivers on that promise in spades. When I finally achieved my goal of buying a 2017 Ariel Atom 3S in 2018, it was everything I had hoped for and more.

The Atom is a car that puts you in touch with the road in a way that modern vehicles simply can’t match. It’s a car that demands your attention and rewards your skill, and it’s an absolute thrill to drive.

Unfortunately, a move across the country for work forced me to part ways with my beloved Atom, and I was left without a fun car to drive. I tried to fill the void with an Audi R8 V10 Performance, but I quickly found it to be a disappointing substitute. Despite its impressive specs, the R8 felt bland, uneventful and unexciting to drive. It was a car that was tamed

by technology, and it lacked the visceral connection that made the Atom so special.

Thankfully, I recently had the opportunity to get back into an Ariel Atom, this time the newest model, the Atom 4. I jumped at the chance, and after selling the R8 and working out a few logistics, I finally have an Atom back in my garage.

For me, the Ariel Atom is more than just a car. It’s a symbol of everything that’s great about driving. It’s a reminder that sometimes the simplest things can be the most rewarding and that a car doesn’t need to be flashy or mainstream to be an absolute joy to drive. If you’re a true car enthusiast, then the Ariel Atom is a car that you simply have to experience for yourself.

The Ariel Atom 4 is such an incredible machine! When I first started looking to get back in an Atom, I was admittedly getting a little hung up on comparing the Atom 4 on paper, like the fact that the Atom 4 is a meager 15 horsepower less what my Atom 3S had. Additionally, the Atom 4 was consistently being described as refined, which, considering my experience in the R8, was translating to bland and unexciting. However, after having the vehicle for four months now, I am glad I put all of that aside and purchased it.

The new Type R platform, specifically the K20C1, really breathes new life into the car. The minor drop in horsepower is by all means unnoticeable, especially when compensated by the improved power delivery that the Atom 4 has been given; it’s smooth and linear, yet still puts you in your seat and a grin on your face.

My grin gets even bigger when I hear the goosebumpscausing induction noises right in your ear; I’ve never been happier to have my Apple Watch warn me that I am in a noisy environment every time I put the throttle to the floor.

The refinement of the Atom 4 comes in the form of better and progressive control, compared to some of the known challenges of the Atom 3 such as vehicle control when hitting bumps. The four months and 4,000 miles I have now driven it has helped me understand that refinement means better, not dumbed down. A recent experience of that was when the Atom 4 started to step out on me a little during a turn. Unlike the Atom 3, the rotation was calm, progressive and easy to control, allowing me to easily reign it back in without feeling panicked or rushed.

There are several other notable improvements on the Atom 4. The new AiM dash display is incredible, having great color, showing the right displays and indicators and all intuitively

placed. . . . And, while it sounds like a minor thing, the new tether for the gas cap is a nice subtle addition that simplifies the experience at the pump; it is uncomfortably easy to lose that surprisingly expensive cap.

The new shifter is taller and has more weight than the Atom 3, which I thought I was going to really dislike. However, it grew on me quickly, and now I love it. Shifting feels intentional and precise, and the actual shift stick is at a height that encourages a natural position and intuitive movement when you’re ready to go to the next gear, whether it’s a casual drive or slamming through the gears at a track.

Historically, when it comes to cars, refinement has carried a negative connotation: Dumbed down, simplified, technologized are great ways to do describe what “refinement” usually means, and it consistently targets the everyday commuter that has no focus or priority on performance or direct control.

Ariel knows its customer base and knows that the people in these cars aren’t interested in a mundane experience when behind the wheel. As a result, despite that the Atom 4 is “refined,” it in no way took away from its rawness, lack of tech and incredible acceleration. The refinement focuses on better handling, a better power curve and subtle improvements that will matter to any avid driver.

sport bike. But, with the Atom you don’t have to sacrifice the mid-corner traction issues or wondering if you’re going to hit a patch of gravel mid corner and have the bike skate out from under you.

“I own two sport bikes and absolutely love them but always have that haunting feeling heading into the corners at speed if this is where it all ends!” he explains. “In the Atom you can carry even more speed than on a sport bike, and with the same wind-in-your-hair feeling but with the stability of four contact patches underneath you, not two.”

$56 Million in Total Sales Achieved at Mecum Glendale 2023

Mecum’s Glendale 2023 classic and collector car auction, held March 28-April 1 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, reached $56 million in total overall sales as 1,266 lots hammered sold. With a total 1,667 lots offered throughout the five-day auction, a sell-through rate of 76% was achieved, and individual sales were led by a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (Lot S132) that brought $1.815 million.

A diverse selection of available classic and collector cars in Glendale resulted in a similarly varied top 10 sellers list, with a wide selection of both American-built beauties and coveted imports from across the pond making the cut. The auction-leading Gullwing, dressed in rarely seen Mittelgrün green, had undergone a meticulous restoration by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in the late-2000s, where it was displayed periodically from 2015-2020—qualities that made it an especially desirable classic. A 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS (Lot S114.1) grabbed seat No. 2, bringing $605,000, and a 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 4X4 Squared (Lot S158) grabbed seat No. 3 with a sale price of $489,500.

While everything from prewar antiques to nearly new supercars and more were on scene in Glendale, six of the top 10 seller spots were claimed by an exceptional crosssampling of American muscle and sports cars, including a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Split Window Coupe (Lot F135) that sold for $390,500, a 2005 Ford GT (Lot S98.1) that brought $374,000, and a pair of Yenkos that each exceeded $350,000—a 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro (Lot S142) and a 1968 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro RS/SS (Lot F168)—

to name a few.

Collections were another highlight of the Glendale auction lineup, and the headlining Mile High Collection was exceptionally well received with all 19 of its vehicles selling for an overall total of $1.78 million. The Premier Corvette Pace Car Collection also saw a warm reception from bidders with 12 of its vehicle offerings selling for more than $1 million in total.

Today, these include doctors’ offices, a children’s learning academy, a barber shop, the Blossom restaurant, a Blue Bell ice-cream parlor and Bone Haus Brewing, where Cheezy’s, an innovative mobile pizza kiosk, makes regular stops.

The owner, Heidi, and her staff first offered a variety of services including facial waxing, nails, massage as well as a café menu. As more and more salon customers signed in, people started asking for food and drinks so she first offered breakfast, then lunch, then dinner with a full bar. The spa began treating the couple so well with customers that they discontinued lunch about five years ago.

Changing VUs

For car collectors, the building would be a classic location for a getaway; the bar is already in place, and some of the cars could be placed adjacent to the panoramic windows, combining natural with automotive beauty. On the north side of the building, a series of arches over the patio could become the entrances to the bays leading inside to the collection. Trackless garage-door openers would easily fit, providing clear ceilings. Add the cars, the neon signs and other automobilia, a finished floor and a large-screen TV. The extraordinary views won’t be changing for a million years or so.

The restaurant might continue in this form or another food and beverage location, such as another brewery for beer or mead. A wine-tasting boutique, offering bottles as well as curated sips and small bites, is another. We have many of these now in wine-emerging Arizona: in Cottonwood, Jerome and Sedona, the Cornville area and throughout the southern part of the state.

Staff can park at the higher lot and walk down. The lot fronting the arches could be used as an event venue; just erect the

tents without disturbing traffic into the building or the remainder of the center. Food trucks could conveniently serve customers here, too.

Or the boutique shops can be expanded into separate areas for fashion, furnishings, high-end antiques, an art gallery, books, a design studio and a café with small-bites and wine. Various experts could be scheduled for talks and consults and book signings.

Another option for the VU: Create a hiking and off-roading venue, renting and selling vehicles, bikes and motorbikes, equipment and trailwear for adventures into the nearby Mazatzal and Four Peaks mountains, with hundreds of square miles of trails and extraordinary high desert. Perhaps individuals or groups could start out with a breakfast and end their day of adventure with chuckwagon-cooked grub on outside grills and smokers. This opportunity might include popular jeep tours into the backcountry.

Or a local golfing phenom could offer custom equipment and simulators to help other duffers with their games; the sunlit Valley of the Sun offers more than 200 private and public courses including those in Fountain Hills and nearby Scottsdale and the Wekopa Resort, a few minutes north of town.

Fountain Hills is set on rolling hills rare in the generally flat

desert Valley. The potential clientele posts superb demographics with homes from $500,000 to many millions and owners with well-above-average disposable income. Nearby are the ADERO Scottsdale resort with superb mountaintop dining and upscale residences adjacent to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park, featuring more than 50 miles of trails. Sky Harbor International and Scottsdale airports are both 30 minutes away, and the property is close to burgeoning Mesa and the East Valley via the Beeline Highway.

The VU is opportunity, in all directions.

It’s the only Kentucky Derby Party in Arizona where fans can bet on the Kentucky Derby simulcast while enjoying live local horseracing at Phoenix’s Turf Paradise, Arizona’s first sports franchise, and the Valley’s only horseracing track.

In addition to being the title sponsor of the Arizona event, Woodford Reserve is also the Presenting Sponsor of the Kentucky Derby itself.

The Woodford Reserve Derby DayClub: Presented by Sanderson Lincoln offers Scottsdale Polo Party-style tent seating near the finish line at Turf Paradise as well as pavilion seating nearby.

The Derby DayClub is a production of the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships, America’s most attended polo event returning November 4th to Westworld of Scottsdale.

WRAITH: A CULTURAL ICON

Launched in 2013, Wraith is one of the most important and influential models ever designed and built at Goodwood. More performance-focused than its predecessors Phantom

and Ghost, Wraith fundamentally altered perceptions of RollsRoyce and brought new, younger customer groups to the brand for the first time. Its wider cultural significance is underlined by countless references to the Wraith in music, cinema, art and fashion.

THE V12 CONNECTION

Wraith’s dramatic ‘fastback’ silhouette signalled the motor car’s dynamic intent, which was further amplified in 2016, with the introduction of Black Badge Wraith: a potent, subversive and even more powerful expression of this transformative motor car, offering some of the highest levels of performance ever achieved by a V12-powered Rolls-Royce.

Yet when considering how best to mark the end of the Wraith era, Goodwood’s designers and engineers took inspiration for the Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow Collection from an equally significant V12 in Rolls-Royce’s long and storied legacy. In 1938, Captain George Eyston – whose bold, brave endeavours encapsulate the Black Badge spirit - set a world land speed record of 357.497 mph with Thunderbolt, a seventonne, eight-wheeled leviathan equipped with two Rolls-Royce V12 'R' Series aero engines. The outbreak of the Second World War in the following year ended Eyston’s endeavours;

all subsequent records have been set with different engine types and configurations, enshrining Thunderbolt in perpetuity as the fastest V12-powered motor car ever built.

Thunderbolt’s record attempts took place on the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Against the glare of the brilliant white surface, and under a blazing desert sun, the reflections from the car's polished aluminium body made it almost impossible to tell precisely when it passed the timing equipment. Eyston's simple but ingenious solution was to paint a large black arrow on the car's sides, incorporating a yellow central circle motif that could be seen clearly even at high speed. This is what gives today’s Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow Collection both its name and unique historical context.

Aaron & Valerie Weiss’s ‘Beaters’

Aaron and Valerie Weiss affectionately call their cars “our beaters.” These automotive treasures, showcased in a Pasadena warehouse, include many award winners: a Deusy, Rolls Royce, a Marmon V-16. So, let’s rally to California where we can meet the couple, enjoy their collection and maybe find Jan & Dean’s “Little Old Lady (from Pasadena),” who, almost 60 years after her debut, still terrorizes Colorado Boulevard in her Super Stock Dodge.

The couple has about 30 cars in the collection with two out for restoration. Aaron cofounded and both continue to organize the popular San Marino Motor Classic that includes the PCA Concorso Ferrari held every summer in Old Town Pasadena as publicized by Highline Autos

Their earliest car is a 1925 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost bodied by Picadilly. The newest is a 1991 Porsche 944 Turbo Cabriolet. The collection also contains pre-war European and American classics such as Packards; he’s an active member of the Packard Club.

“I started collecting post WWII Rolls-Royces but then discovered

cars of the late 1920s through 1937 and have focused my attention on the period,” Weiss says, noting that the collection is about 70% pre-World War II and 30% post. Many of these cars have appeared at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance.

His car interest started when he was about 5. “My father had a friend who had a Chevrolet dealership, and I would get showroom sales aids from previous years. Our neighbor, a TV actress, bought a Rolls-Royce Cloud, and I got interested in Rolls-Royces when I was about 10.” He started acquiring cars about 1998.

Weiss was born in Inglewood, California, and raised in Palos Verdes Estates, California. After high school there, he attended the University of Southern California where he earned a bachelor’s of science degree and an MBA. Later, while working in banking, he taught economics at USC for several years. He started a business and in 1991 began managing the family’s real estate business.

Raised in Hollywood, California, Valerie attended Hollywood High School before matriculating at USC where she earned a bachelor’s in communications and an MPA from the School

of Planning and Public Policy. “She enjoys the car culture, probably the social aspect of it, the places we go and the people we meet,” he says.

For the San Marino Motor Classic, she is most involved with planning the Symphony of Cars Gala and in organizing the stuffing of entrant and judges goodie bags. “She’s extremely active in several charitable groups in addition to the San Marino Motor Classic, so she does not long for things to do,” he says. He adds that they regularly donate to the Cancer Support Community Pasadena, and the annual concours raises money for the organization.

•1929 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Body Butterfly Dual Cowl Phaeton — John-Manville heir Tommy Manville bought this new. One of two built, it recently took 2nd in Class at Pebble Beach.

•1930 Cadillac V-16 Roadster — The couple have owned this car for more than 15 years. A CCCA 100-point car, it’s won numerous Best in Show Awards and placed 2nd in Class at Pebble Beach. “For collectors of V-16 Cadillacs, the 1930–31 roasters are the holy grail both because of their limited manufacture but the design of the body itself,” he says. The car has placed 2nd in Class at Pebble Beach.

•1931 Chrysler Imperial CG Dual Cowl Phaeton —The 1931 Chrysler CG was Chrysler's first attempt to enter the luxury car market, Weiss says. This one was 1st in Class at Pebble Beach.

•1933 Marmon V-16 Convertible Coupe — This may have been the last Marmon sold before the company went bankrupt. The magazine article “$70,000 for a V16” tells the story of the sheet metal vendor that the company owed $70,000 went to the factory to obtain payment. On the way to the corporate office, he passed the factory showroom where this coupe was displayed.

Management told him that the company was broke and was going to file for bankruptcy. They offered him a pallet of tooling that he could not use, and he countered their offer by saying that if they gave him the Marmon in the showroom he would call it even.

“He took possession of the car and built the fenders and hood enclosure and modified it by skirting the fenders and replacing the vertical vents in the engine enclosure with horizontal ones, making this possibly the only Marmon with such features,” Weiss explains. It’s won several Best in Shows, and was 2nd in Class at Pebble Beach.

•1937 Horch 853 Sport Phaeton — This is one of 24

remaining. The 4944-cc straight 8 produces 120 hp; it’s linked to a 4-speed manual gearbox. An Army officer at the end of WWII brought this gorgeous car to the U.S. where it remained in his family through 1992. “It bounced around a bit before I purchased it from a couple in Germany, and I had a frameoff restoration performed and then took it to Pebble Beach where it won 2nd in class and the Elegance in Motion Award,” Weiss explains.

It then won a Timeless Elegance Award at Amelia Island, Best In Show at the Peterson virtual concours, and then DuPont Registry named it Concours Car of the Year in 2021. It also won Best in Show at the Hillsborough Concours and is a 100point CCCA Award winner, he says.

•1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III — First purchased by a maharaja, this is a V-12 disappearing top cabriolet. Of the 724 PIII bodies built, only 21 are convertibles, making this car rare.

Weiss tells the story: “The wealthy maharajas completed

amongst themselves as to who could obtain the most opulent physical possessions. This maharaja was upset that the delivery date for his PIII chassis was further out than those of his maharaja friends, meaning that he would be the last one on the block to have a PIII.

“Not to be outdone, he travelled to England and bought a recently bodied PIII, took it to famed Thrupp & Mabry and they replaced the existing body with a more desirable twodoor disappearing top coupe, one of two bodied in this manner. He returned to India with his distinctly more opulent PIII and then later in the year took delivery of the original running chassis and had it bodied and shipped to India. He may have been the only maharaja with two such cars.”

Weiss adds: “Again, this car bounced around a bit before I bought it in 2021.” It won a People’s Choice at Amelia Island. He is repainting it and hoping to take it to this year’s Pebble Beach.

the car has never been shown. “In 1956 only the most discerning and wealthy car buyers would have even considered a 300Sc Convertible Coupe. The car was one of the last models that were hand built and had a MSRP that exceeded that of a Rolls-Royce,” Weiss says.

•1961 Mercedes-Benz 300 Model D — The Model Ds are nicknamed “Adenauer” after Conrad Adenauer, Germany’s first post-war chancellor who owned six of them. “These cars were state of the art and certainly the most luxurious models that Mercedes-Benz made at the time,” he says. This car was originally purchased for European delivery by a physician in Atherton, California, who retained ownership until his death in 2014. At that time, his children inherited the car and sold it to Weiss. The four-door convertible has had a recent restoration.

Shades of French Racing Blue hark back to the early Grand Prix racers that established Bugatti’s motorsport reputation, while a deep orange is applied in honor of the Bugatti World Record Edition vehicles, including Chiron Super Sport. The grille that houses the powerful drivers – made of lightweight and strong Beryllium – in each pair of headphones is inspired by the famous Bugatti horseshoe grille.

In their construction, the Master & Dynamic collection mirrors the materials found in Bugatti’s hyper sports cars, with both engineering for optimum performance and durability. The MG20 headphones, for example, feature ear cups crafted from incredibly strong and lightweight magnesium, just like the wheels available for certain Bugatti models. The tactile, aluminum controls on the Bugatti Master & Dynamic collection evoke the intricate aluminum detailing found in Bugatti hyper sports cars, including the W16 Mistral’s gear lever which is milled from a solid block of the lightweight and durable metal.
