Following $66.3 million in total sales on a 78% sell-through of 1,657 lots at Mecum Glendale 2022, Mecum Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction company, will return to State Farm Stadium this March 28-April 1 for its fifth annual auction in Glendale, Arizona, with an estimated 2,000 vehicles and approximately 150 pieces of Road Art and memorabilia items to be offered.

Headlining the featured lots is a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

Gullwing that boasts its rebuilt, original, matching-numbers 3.0L fuel-injected inline 6-cylinder engine and is the only known example delivered in Mittelgrün over green and gray leather of the 1,400 produced between 1954 and 1957. A 1968 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro RS/SS that is one of a purported 64 Yenko Super Camaros, and one of just 11 RS/SS Yenko Camaros made in 1968, will also headline the Glendale lineup, and the desirable driver has been in the possession of its current owner for the last 42 years.

2023 Car Auctions Thrive in the Valley of the Sun

Barrett-Jackson surpassed $190.6 million in total auction sales at its 2023 Scottsdale auction, led by a 1989 Ferrari F40 (Lot #1405.1), $2.75 million; a magnificent 1947 Talbot Lago was Best in Show at the Arizona Concours; Bonhams: The Scottsdale Auction sold the Eleonora Sears 1912 Simplex at $4.8 million, doubling expectations, making a world record for pre-WW 1 cars and becoming the top lot for the Scottsdale auctions; the leading car at RM was a 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari, $4,075,000; and at MAG Auctions, a third Ferrari, a 1999 Maranello (Lot #411T), led the event, bringing $205,000.

Barrett Jackson, the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, sold 1,907 No Reserve collectible vehicles with a 100-percent sell-through rate, an average sale per car price of $96,000plus. During the weeklong lifestyle event, a 2002 Honda S2000 was named Best of Show at the Future Collector Car Show; more than 1,100 pieces of authentic automobilia sold for $6.41-plus million, exceeding total auction sales of $190.6 million. A record number of bidders and more than 300,000 attendees enjoyed the nine-day event.

Five vehicles raised $1.89 million for charity, led by a 2024

Powell’s 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (Lot #3003), $200,000, to benefit America’s Promise Alliance; and 2024 Ford Mustang GT Fastback VIN 001 (Lot #3004), $565,000 to benefit JDRF. The Mustang hammered for $490,000 and received an additional $75,000 in donations.

The Future Collector Car Show presented by Meguiar’s featured more than 100 future collectibles for young collectors and collectors-to-be. A 2002 Honda S2000 owned by David Flinn was named Best of Show. Among the judges at the event was celebrated automotive photographer Larry Chen, TV personality Bogi Lateiner and YouTuber TJ Hunt.

The Best in Show winner of the Barrett-Jackson Cup presented by Castrol was a 1969 Pontiac Firebird built by Troy Gudgel at BBT Fabrications and owned by Brad Sather, who took home the trophy and $20,000. Hot-rod builder Bobby Alloway and automobile designer and builder Troy Trepanier selected the Top 5 finalists and the Ultimate Best of Show winner from the nearly 50 incredible custom vehicles.

Arizona Concours Triumphantly Returns

Bonhams Pre-WWI Classic Tops Week’s Sales

The 1912 Simplex 50hp 5 Passenger Torpedo Tourer sold for $4,845,000 at Bonhams: The Scottsdale Auction, which returned for its 11th edition to the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale. The 111-year-old car was a gift by Harold Vanderbilt to legendary American sportswoman, Eleonora Sears. The company’s U.S. season-opener totaled $30 million, with 84% of the 125 lots sold, 97% by value.

Developed from the GT1 racing car, a 2006 Maserati MC12 Corse, sold for $4,115,000. One of only a dozen examples produced, the car had covered just 123 miles from new.

John White’s prestigious Ramshead Collection sold for

$3 million. Highlights were three mid-century Chrysler Ghia show cars: a one-off concept 1957 Chrysler Ghia Super Dart 400, $819,000; a 1954 Chrysler Ghia GS-1 Coupé, one of only five survivors of nine produced, $802,500; and a 1962 Chrysler Ghia L6.4, $577,000.

Other top cars include a 1953 Siata 208S Spider, $1,572,000; 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster, $2 million; 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, $1 million; and a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS, $1.5 million.

RM Sotheby’s returned to the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix for its 24th sale in Arizona, grossing $44,873,140 for a sellthrough of 91.30%. A one-off Blu Elettrico over Crema leather 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari was the top-seller at $4,075,000.

Following this, a 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV by Bertone brought $3,580,000 and a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti, with a matching chassis, engine, and body, $3,360,000. And, representing “America’s Sports Car,” a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray ZL-1 Convertible fetched $3,140,000, becoming the highest selling price of a C3 Corvette at auction.

Bidders from 22 countries participated, 29% of buyers were first-time buyers and 15% of bidders were new bidders. RM Sotheby’s is the world's largest collector car auction house by total sales and has sold seven of the top ten most valuable motor cars ever at auction.

When a home is built right and cared for by its owners, it will stand the test of time.”

This timeless character begins at the entry portico, with details such as elegant cantera on the portico, he explains. That welcoming façade, in fact, was inspired by the Beverly Hills Hilton, the husband notes. “It’s simply a preview of the intricate details found within, creating continuity,” Sutton says.

Sonora Antique travertine and walnut flooring and wool carpeting appear throughout. The master bathroom floor is a combination of Verde Luna stone and a limestone. A small rotunda connecting spaces off the home’s central corridor includes an intricate mosaic design, and elegant interlocking wood and stone combinations feature elsewhere.

Rope-outlined cantera arched niches are in the dining room and elsewhere; fireplaces are also cantera. Many stone and tile accents appear throughout the home, in particular, the bathrooms, all of which are uniquely finished.

Countertops are different granite slabs; the laundry room example is particularly engaging, an off white with a tree design, which makes even clothes folding fun and wrapping presents even more so, the wife notes. Beams and doors and other woodwork are alder. Complementing these extensive details are neutral tones, accented with rich warm woods and small color pops, Sutton says.

Varying ceiling designs in each room further set the home apart, he says. The kitchen, for example, showcases a herringbone brick inset that always gets attention. The game room has beams that radiate from a central axis clad in black iron and the executive office a traditional coffered variety with a rhomboid shape for visual appeal. Elsewhere throughout the home, crown molding accentuates the architectural elements. “With unique ceilings, you can experience the full volume of a space,” Sutton says. “You look down, you look forward at the furnishings and artwork, then you look up.”

During building, his father and assistants also choreographed the lighting. One compelling vignette of his artistry is the grand central gallery connecting the bedrooms on the east and public space on the west. The 18-foot-high corridor, naturally

illuminated with clerestory windows, required multiple fixtures at different heights, including chandeliers, cans and sconces, to optimize nighttime effects. “This layering provides the drama of the light and shadows that shows off the space to full effect,” Sutton explains.

Each room has been individually tuned for lifestyle and beauty. The rotunda foyer, for instance, provides dramatic entry, with its roped arch niches, wall hangings and other welcoming details. And, builder Tony Calvis notes that the exercise room has rubber flooring for safety and comfort and a massage alcove and full bath; the family room/game room/pub bar area is a gathering place that accommodates large gatherings.

The kitchen is centered by double islands, which makes both catered and home-managed events easy. There are double ovens, two large sinks for convenient prep and clean-up and a large butler’s pantry. “We have caterers from San Francisco who love to come to this house,” the wife says. And she likes the adjacent built-in for tablecloths and napkin

holders because she particularly enjoys the challenge of table-setting. Explains Sutton, “This area was added just for that reason. Homes need to be designed for peoples’ lifestyles, and that’s not the same for each homeowner.”

Connecting with the kitchen are the breakfast and family rooms, forming a consolidated great room with an open floorplan, cozy for everyday life, small get-togethers and large enough for full-scale entertaining, which this couple has thoroughly enjoyed. A wine room provides some of the beverages in conjunction with the game room bar.

Calvis calls the master bedroom “palatial, a component everyone buying a luxury home wants.” The suite includes spacious his and hers walk-in closets, two toilet areas and a jetted tub in the resplendent bathroom.

The splendid laundry/wrapping room also provides a great set-down space for packages; it’s adjacent to the large garage, which includes five space-making Liftmaster units, offering the DIY collector or his/her mechanic the option of installing

full or half lifts in the 12-foot-high spaces. Ample built-in cabinetry provides storage for the space and for the remainder of the home. Calvis notes that many luxury homes miss the storage element: “This one has plenty.”

The back yard is ringed with mature white oleanders and contains a variety of other trees, including cypress and African sumac, adding to the estatelike privacy; dramatic north views of landmark Mummy Mountain face the entry.

The elements throughout the home are still relevant in our industry today. Arizona’s best Kentucky Derby party has a new name and a prestigious new title sponsor.

The Woodford Reserve Derby DayClub: Presented by Sanderson Lincoln, is returning to Phoenix’s Turf Paradise May 6th. Its new title sponsor is Woodford Reserve, which also has the honor of being the Presenting Sponsor of the Kentucky Derby. Woodford Reserve is known as the world’s finest bourbon. Its distillery is the oldest in the United States.

This is the only Kentucky Derby Party in Arizona where fans can place their bets on the Kentucky Derby while watching the live simulcast PLUS live local horseracing at Turf Paradise, Arizona’s first sports franchise, and the Valley’s only horseracing track.

Most of the party tent seating is near the finish line at Turf

Paradise allowing fans to see local horseracing action before and after the Derby simulcast.

The event also allows fans to get an up-close look at luxury vehicles from Sanderson Lincoln. Sanderson Lincoln is a Black Label dealership and a leading Lincoln dealership in Arizona.

The Woodford Reserve Derby DayClub combines the traditions and thrills of horseracing with a Polo Party vibe that includes the Derby simulcast on large screen TV’s in covered party tents with live DJs, while just a few feet away from the rail where the horses are racing at Turf Paradise. The event is produced by the same team behind the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships.

The Sanderson Lincoln Black Label Lounge is a key feature of what is known as Arizona’s best Kentucky Derby party.

It includes reserved tables in a covered track-side tent near the finish line. Guests can also enjoy amazing views, convenient access to Turf Paradise betting terminals, no-host bars inside the tent for Mint Juleps, champagne, cocktails, proximity to food trucks for additional refreshments, and 65” TVs to watch the Kentucky Derby. High Noon Premium Hard Seltzer has also joined the event as the sponsor of the High Noon Sun Sips Pavilion. The High Noon Sun Sips Pavilion offers seating at the track apron. It includes a bucket of four High Noon Seltzers per table. The reserved tables are in the covered open-air tent near the finish line but further off the backstretch than the Black Label Lounge. Porsche 911 GT3 RS Makes Tribute to the Original Carrera RS

Porsche has pulled the cover off the first 911 GT3 RS Tribute to Carrera RS Package to reach the U.S. The special offering pays homage to one of the most the iconic of 911 models. Today it was shown to members of the media in person for the first time before an initial viewing opportunity for the public at Sebring International Raceway during the 12 Hours of Sebring race from March 15 to 18. Initial deliveries to customers will begin in only a few weeks.

‟This package pays tribute to the 911 Carrera RS 2.7, an absolute driver’s car and an icon,” said Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. ‟Today, nothing epitomizes the idea of a driver’s car more than the new 911 GT3 RS. Like the original, it uses cutting edge aerodynamics to achieve incredible performance, making this a perfect homage to the legend from 1973.”

The Tribute to Carrera RS Package includes unique styling

elements for both the exterior and interior, a bespoke Porsche Design timepiece and several accessories specifically created for the car. Those accessories focus on the details and include a custom car cover, RS valve stem caps with script in Python Green, key caps in Python Green, custom license plate frames and a pair of 1:43 scale model cars; one being the 1973 Carrera RS and the other a replica of the new car.

Specially colored Exclusive Manufaktur elements unique to the package include magnesium wheels painted in Python Green, Python Green mirror caps and GT3 RS side graphics. PORSCHE script on the underside of the wing and a GT3 RS graphic on the rear bumper continue the theme, which is completed by a special RS logo on the wing end plates featuring the American flag.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum comprises 160 horse-drawn vehicles and antique motor vehicles used for the pioneer Wyoming city’s Cheyenne Frontier Days™ parades every July.

The event was established in 1897 to bolster the local economy by celebrating the unique western experience of Cheyenne, explains Mike Kassel, associate director/curator of collections. The annual event celebrates the importance of the Transcontinental Railroad, the city’s role during the Indian Wars and its golden years as a major center of the 19th-century cattle boom. The first Union Pacific Railroad train reached Cheyenne on November 14, 1867.

“Organizers hoped to give visitors an experience of the authentic West that they had been reading about in dime novels and seeing in extravaganzas like Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West shows,” he says.

Combining hospitality, and the participation of Native Americans, the United States Army and cowboy talent from around the nation, the event became the celebration of the American West and the birthplace of modern rodeo, he adds. It acquired

the moniker, “The Daddy of ’Em All,” and inspired other spectacles such as the Pendleton Round-Up, the Calgary Stampede, the Greeley Stampede and the Houston Rodeo.

When CFD’s Silver Anniversary occurred in 1922, the organizing committee thought that the parades that had originally greeted visitors needed to be more than the traditional “cowboys and Indians,” bands and dignitaries variety. They asked local rancher and businessman, Fred Boice, for a refresh. In turn, he asked his wife Margaret for help.

A creative thinker and a fierce organizer, she assembled a parade line-up that eventually became “The Evolution of Wyoming Road Transportation.” This included a NativeAmerican woman on horseback pulling a travois, followed by cavalry soldiers, a prairie schooner pulled by oxen, a pack-train, one of the original Cheyenne-to-Deadwood Stage coaches that was still in the city, her family’s ranch cart and a sleek 1922 roadster from a contemporary dealership.

The new format display became popular. Four years later, Parades Chairman George F. Jones asked the Boices to recreate their previous incarnation of the parades as an

ongoing element in the 1926 and all future parades. “A call went out for people to donate their carriages to the parade, many of which were moldering in carriage houses and barns across the city having been recently replaced by the ubiquitous fascination with the automobile,” Kassel explains.

“Almost immediately, carriages of all kinds began to be delivered to Frontier Park, and every year more carriages were added, by donation or purchase,” he says, adding that at first, the collection was kept under one of the local grandstands to weather the harsh winters.

Margaret Boice and her volunteers, first called the “Old Rigs Committee” and then the “W-Heels,” cleaned the carriages, organized the horses and drivers and rented period-appropriate costumes for the many hundreds of riders that would appear in each parade. A group of other volunteers, “The Wagon Doctors,” with backgrounds in fine carpentry, metalwork and detail painting, repaired and restored the vehicles.

The Museum Arrives

Hall Pavilion, reserving a small part as event headquarters. “The W-Heels and their supporters campaigned to have the rest turned into a museum dedicated to the community’s heritage, and more importantly, a place to shelter the best of the parade vehicles and make them available to the public year-round,” Kassel says.

The Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum opened in 1978, and in 2022 the Marietta Dinneen Carriage Barn debuted at Frontier Park to store the vehicles against the weather.

Winter, late spring and the fall are the best times to visit the museum to see the carriages, Kassel says. These times alternate with various art shows, “Western Spirit,” from the beginning of March to mid-April, and the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Western Art Show and Sale through July. While the vehicles aren’t in the museum during July, “If patrons are lucky enough to be visiting the museum during the last full week in July, they will have the opportunity to see 65 horsedrawn vehicles in one of the four parades held during the event,” he adds.

that eventually became the “horseless carriages.” “No one really knows the oldest vehicle in the collection,” Kassel says, “and there are examples of vehicles popular in the 1840s that can be seen on display. Few realized it at the time, but the arrival of the automobile portended the beginning of the CFD carriage collection as carriages and wagons were retired,” he says.

Let’s take a ride, by carriage, car or fire truck, to the museum, but don’t expect padded seats, GPS or bottom warmers.

•The Carey Mail, circa 1885 — Manufactured by the renowned Abbott & Downing Carriage Company of Concord, New Hampshire, this vehicle is rare, with only three others known to exist. The coach was used on the CY Ranch near Casper, Wyoming, and was owned by Joseph Maul Carey, the territorial attorney general in 1868. He began ranching in the 1870s and became one of the state’s premier stockmen.

In addition, he represented the territory in the U.S. Congress during the 1880s and ran several businesses in Cheyenne. In 1890 he presented the case in the House of Representatives to make Wyoming the 44th state. When that succeeded, he became the state’s first senator. He is best known for facilitating the momentous Carey Land Act in 1894 which opened large tracts of the American west to irrigation and settlement.

Post Office on Horse Creek and carrying passengers to and from the ranch. The Carey family lent the coach to Cheyenne Frontier Days, and it's driven every year by his grandsons.

•The Yellowstone Coaches, circa 1883 — The Abbott and Downing Company manufactured these for use transporting guests from Montana and Wyoming railheads into Yellowstone National Park and to take them on tours of the park’s wonders.

Originally used in 1886, the first nonmotorized vehicles were designed for six, nine or eleven passengers; the yellow livery was chosen by the Yellowstone National Park Transportation Company in 1896. The company switched to using motorized white buses in 1917. In 1928, George Jones, the CFD parades chairman, acquired four Yellowstone coaches, and they have been used in every parade since then.

•Cheyenne or Bust car — A polyglot collection of Ford Model A’s, 1926–1929, this vehicle was created by Gerald Blackwell when his Oak Spokes club colleagues asked him for a parade car. It recalls the popularity of Cheyenne Frontier Days even during the worst of the Great Depression. Blackwell retired it in 2019.

•The Boice “P.O. Ranch” Dog-Cart Phaeton, 1870 — In 1925, Margaret Boice used this wagon to represent road transportation for the ranching industry in her first Evolution of Wyoming Road Transportation parade. Known locally as

the “Tea” Wagon, it was not a reference to what it was used for but rather the general shape of its design, Kassel explains.

Constructed by the Woods Brothers Co., New York, N.Y., the wagon was likely owned by Edgar Boice, Margaret’s fatherin-law, when he was hired by the Arbuckle family as the manager of the P.O. Ranch north of Cheyenne.

•Deadwood Stagecoach #68, 1885 — Kassel explains that coaches used for public transportation became known as stagecoaches because their journeys were accomplished by successive stages, or intervals. The term originated in Scotland in the mid-1600s.

•Stagecoaches and stage wagons were built in a variety of shapes and sizes; this is a six-passenger Celerity Wagon. It was used on the 300-mile Cheyenne-Black Hills Stage line, founded in 1876 to link the two areas and the gold mining camps of the Dakota Territory. At the peak of operation, the company offered daily departures from Cheyenne with arrival in Deadwood 50 hours later. The last stage left Cheyenne's Inter-Ocean Hotel on February 19, 1887.

and a great showman, acquired this coach from the stage line for use in his Wild West Show, which traveled extensively in the United States and Canada from 1912 to 1917.

It took part in the National Bicentennial Parade in Washington, D. C., where it paraded down Pennsylvania Avenue as part of the Wyoming contribution to the celebrations. “After many journeys, parades, celebrations and countless miles, the Deadwood Stage Coach was finally retired in 2010,” Kassel says.

•Army Escort Wagon #130, circa 1865 — One of the oldest vehicles in the collection, this is one of a type developed shortly after the Civil War. Designed to carry up to 5,000 pounds of supplies, wagons like these were used at Camp Carlin, otherwise known as the Cheyenne Depot, from 1867 to 1884. Six mules pulled them from the depot to frontier forts and garrisons in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

The U.S. Army used these wagons until the 1930s. Most likely, the event acquired the wagon in 1947 when nearby Fort Warren was transferred to the United States Air Force. In the 1970s, this wagon and three others were converted

into air-conditioned “Howdy Wagons,” with a faux prairie schooner wooden top. A complete restoration returned it to the original frontier look.

•Concord Western Mail Coach — About 12 years ago, the CFD Parades Committee considered retiring the sixpassenger Deadwood Stage Coach #68, but what would the new parade flagship be?

Doug Hansen of the Hansen Wheel and Wagon Shop in Letcher, South Dakota, was asked to build a replica Concord western mail coach to replace it. He used the original plans for vehicles of this type created for the Wells Fargo Stage Line by Abbott and Downing Company from 1896, a time when the stage coach reached its apex, Kassel explains. “This vehicle has been in the CFD parades since 2010 and frequently travels to other communities to participate in holiday parades and sporting events,” he says.

•1909 Maxwell-Briscoe — Jonathan Maxwell and Benjamin Briscoe manufactured this two-cylinder car; it’s one of 9,000 sold in the summer of 1909 and typical of the first types of automobiles that began appearing at Cheyenne Frontier Days™ in 1906, Kassel explains.

To get to Cheyenne, early drivers had to use old wagon or stage line roads. Many visitors had to follow the right-of-way for the Union Pacific Railroad and sometimes had to use railroad bridges to cross creeks, canyons and rivers. Kassel notes, wryly, “It was always handy to have a time-schedule on hand to anticipate when a train might need to use the bridge, too.”

17th La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is April 21, 22 &

Arguably America’s greatest car marque, Duesenberg, will be honored at the 2023 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance April 21–23 at Ellen Scripps Browning Park in La Jolla Cove.

Presented by LPL Financial, Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty and Panerai, the 17th- annual event, “World Class Cars, World Class Experience,” will welcome 4,000 ticketed guests and feature 125-plus vehicles that will be independently judged in 13 classes for cars and motorcycles.

On Sunday, the annual Motor Car Classic will showcase another 40 cars on the street next to the park. Celebrating Ferrari this year, the free event occurs 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Other weekend events also take place nearby in La Jolla.

“I’ve never been prouder of our committed volunteer team and what we’ve accomplished in placing the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance and the village of La Jolla squarely on the map as one of the nation’s top and most respected concours and host venues,” says G. Michael Dorvillier, chairman of the event. “Hosting sponsors, car entrants, judges and guests from around the globe is a huge responsibility that we take very seriously and are honored to do. Starting the weekend on Friday night, Le Cabaret du Concours offers whimsical décor, entertainment, a live auction, hosted specialty cocktails and food from one of San Diego’s top restaurants.

A new event this year is Porsches on Prospect, Saturday, April 22. That afternoon is the annual Tour d’Elegance featuring concours-participating and other classic cars, and the people who love them, cruising San Diego. The event includes breakfast, lunch and commemorative gifts.

On Sunday, the judging occurs between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., led by Chief Judge Nigel Matthews, Global Brand Ambassador for Hagerty. He has judged at 123 concours events worldwide during the past 20 years, including Pebble Beach since 2005 and more recently at Villa d’Este in Italy.

The La Jolla Concours uses the multi-marque system provided by the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG). The car in the class with the highest score is the class winner, and all class winners are eligible for the Best of Show award.

Matthews and his team will award Best in Show, Most Outstanding Pre-War, Most Outstanding Post-War and first, second, and third place awards for the classes. Last year’s Best in Show was a 1931 Type 51 Coupe.

In addition, special awards include LPL Summit Best of Marque; Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty Timeless Elegance; Chairman’s; Mayor’s; La Jolla Historical Society Heritage; and the Restorer of the Year.
