After the close of another record-setting January with $300 million in collector car and vintage motorcycle sales, Mecum Auctions will be back at it again with another 2,000 classic and collector vehicles slated to cross the auction block at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, March 5-9. The host of The World’s Largest Collector Car Auction® has been staging its Arizona-based event since 2018 and has achieved exceptional success in the region, and 2024 is expected to see another exciting return to the Southwest with both headline-worthy collections and individual offerings populating the Arizona auction roster.

Private collections include one assemblage to be offered from the estate of the man behind the original design of the 1961 Ford Thunderbird, the late James Powers. The unique and eclectic group of vehicles includes a one-ofa-kind prototype 2004 Lincoln Mark X Convertible, the design of which he also played a part in developing.

One of the first 300 Corvettes ever built back in the model’s debut year of 1953 will join 26 other examples of “America’s Sports Car” as part of The Utah Corvette Collection, and all are consigned at no reserve. The car is number 129 of the 300 produced and is presented in the correct Polo White with Sportsman Red interior with power supplied by the 235/150 HP Blue Flame Six engine and Powerglide transmission. The Utah Corvette Collection spans every generation of the Corvette, with other noted units from the collection including a matching-numbers 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06/N03 that is one of 63 Z06/N03 Tankers produced in 1963 and an award-winning 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Big Tank Fuelie that is one of just 41 built and the only known one wearing Tuxedo Black.

A pair of Ferraris presented in majestic Rosso Corsa are also among the headlining lots consigned to the Glendale auction. The first of the pair is a 2003 Ferrari Enzo that is one of 111 imported to the U.S. and one of 400 produced in total; it’s Ferrari Classiche certified and will be offered with an accompanying Classiche Red Book. The second is a 1992 Ferrari F40 that is one of only 60 U.S.-spec cars produced in ‘92 and one of 213 total U.S.-spec cars produced for the F40 run; it wears chassis number 91097 and boasts a matching-numbers engine and gearbox.

For the custom enthusiasts is a two-time SEMA winner and Goodguys Street Machine of the Year winner: a 1969 Ford Torino Talladega GPT Special that was custom built by Rad Rides by Troy for land speed racer George Poteet. It was unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Autorama and later featured in the Universal feature film "Furious 7" with star Vin Diesel.

A 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R M Spec Nür was imported from Japan to the U.S. in April 2023 and is one of 24 Skyline GT-R M-Spec Nür models with black paint. It was produced during the final evolution of the fifth-generation Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 with a special edition Nür twin-turbocharged 2.6L RB26DETT Inline 6-cylinder engine based on the N1 racing engine, and it also boasts a 6-speed manual transmission and original paint.

Among the noteworthy Road Art items consigned for Glendale are two custom-built 2018 F1 Simulators with full-size F1 car shells on platforms and triple-screen computers, a 2022 The Little Car Company Bugatti Baby II with chassis number 96 of 500 produced, and a 1940s Harley-Davidson Double-Sided Tin Sign that has The Authenticators Company (TAC) No. 006158.

One can always expect to see some very special cars at the annual Mecum Glendale auction in Arizona. This year’s event, held from March 5th-9th, is no exception. In addition to a Ferrari Enzo and F40, there will be Ford GT’s, an entire collection of classic Corvettes, and the usual Mecum mix of everything from pickup trucks to Rolls-Royces. Highline Autos was treated to an exclusive preview of Wayne Carini’s 1969 Ford Torino Talladega GTP “Special”. A Mecum “Main Attraction”, this car is lot # S123 and will cross the auction block lot on Saturday afternoon. As you may know, Wayne is the star of “Chasing Classic Cars”, an all-around great guy, and genuine car nerd. His Torino is truly a piece of rolling art. A two-time winner at SEMA, “Furious 7” movie car, and Goodguys Street Machine of the year, this Talladega is one-of-a-kind. It was hand-built in 2013 at Rad Rides by Troy for land-speed record holder George Poteet. Dressed in Whisky Brown and Daytona Sand, there are endless subtle but effective details. The rear end is 2 inches wider, the front was shortened by 3 inches, exterior trim is all billet and nickel-plated, cool NASCAR-style rivets are found around the windows and throughout the car. It’s clear that the overall look was inspired by the famous Holman-Moody stock cars from the late 1960’s. It’s powered by a monstrous Boss 429 and shifts gears though a beefy Tremec TKO 600 5-speed. The Chassis is by Art Morrison, the suspension is Corvette C5, and all of the other mechanical components are of the highest quality available. The 2024 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction rocked Arizona Car Week in January with $207.6 million in sales, including 190-plus world-record sales; two Italian classics topped The Arizona Concours awards; Bonhams had the highest seller, a Bugatti Chiron; a 2020 McLaren Speedtail brought $2,012,500 at RM Sotheby’s; a 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster led for $1,215,000 at Worldwide Auctioneers; and during MAG Auctions, a 1970 Boss 302 muscle car-era classic brought an eventleading $120,000.

Barrett-Jackson Rocks

Foreigner and Night Ranger opened the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, January 20–28, with the company’s first “Rock the Block” concert, presented by Arizona Lottery. During the week, all 2,016 vehicles sold at No Reserve, generating $200.9 million in auction sales, the highest in event history. Additionally, 1,180 pieces of automobilia totaled $6.7 million, bringing event sales to $207.6 million — the most for a single auction in company history. In addition, four charity vehicles raised $1 million.

A super-classic 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (Lot #1406) led all cars at $3,410,000. followed by contemporary hyper-car, a 2018 Bugatti Chiron (Lot #1378), $2,970,000, and one of the most beautiful pre-war collectibles, a 1937 MercedesBenz 540K Special Roadster (Lot #1371.1), $2,420,000.

Sammy Hagar’s 2015 LaFerrari was expected on the auction block at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale Auction, but the BarrettJackson team determined that the car’s original high-voltage battery was nearing the end of its eight-year lifespan; a new one has been ordered from Ferrari. The hypercar will now be the centerpiece of Barrett-Jackson’s new fall Scottsdale auction, October 10–13.

The four-day 2024 Scottsdale Fall Auction event will feature new entertainment and lifestyle elements. “The demand for Barrett-Jackson, and particularly this location here in Scottsdale has led to an increasingly unprecedented number of consignments for our January auction, with hundreds of significant quality vehicles being deferred to other auctions every year,” says Davis.

Jackson concludes: “After we hosted an auction in Scottsdale in October 2020, we received incredible feedback on how everyone enjoyed coming to this destination city that time of year. For more than 50 years, we’ve made Scottsdale the epicenter of the collector car universe every January and we look forward to solidifying that title year-round in 2024.”

During the Arizona Concours d’Elegance at the Scottsdale Civic Center, 90 cars appeared, with the Best of Show PreWar winner a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300, owned by Bison Enterprises, Missoula, Montana; the Best of Show Post-War, a 1967 Lamborghini Miura, The John Shirley Collection, Medina, Washington; and a special award for a1936 Bugatti Type 57-SC Atalante, Touring Auto Collection, Decatur, Illinois.

Bonhams | Cars Notches the Week’s Top Sale

Bonhams Scottsdale Auction achieved the top sale of Arizona Car Week with a 2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, $5,175,000, and following this, a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Sunroof Coupe, $1,380,000. The 84 lots generated $12,000,000 with 80% sold.

Known as the world’s fastest road-going car for its recordbreaking speed in excess of 300 mph, the Chiron hypercar is one of just 30 produced and its sale marked the first public offering of a Super Sport 300+ in the United States. The Bugatti participated in the 1938 Rallye des Alpes and is one of only four existing models with a factory sunroof.

Other sales highlights included a 1970 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Spider, $596,250; 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, $431,250; and a 1966 Aston Martin DB6 Sports Saloon, $268,800.

RM Sotheby’s Notches $22.9 Million

For its 26th Arizona auction, RM Sotheby’s returned to the Biltmore Resort in Phoenix, posting sales of $22,000,000, led by a 2020 McLaren Speedtail, $2,012,500, and a 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster, in the style of Sindelfingen, $1,545,000. The event brought 563 bidders, with 20% new bidders and 36% new buyers.

Number 69 of 106, the McLaren Speedtail, in bespoke McLaren Special Operations (MSO) Liquid Blue Silver over blue and gray full aniline leather, continues the F1 supercar legacy for the 21st century and carried just 54 miles at time of cataloguing. The exceptionally restored 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540 K is in the sought-after Special Roadster style by master craftsman Cass Nawrocki and includes the supercharged engine.

A 1984 Audi Sport Quattro, one of 214 constructed, brought $665,000, besting the previous mark by more than $100,000. The car attracted almost 600 bidders. With an elegant white exterior and a gray leather and cloth interior and Recaro sport seats, this is one of few examples believed to have been delivered new to Japan. Well preserved, it had 5,472 miles at cataloguing.

Other top cars are a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso by Scaglietti, $1,352,500; 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra, $1,215,000; 2021 Ford GT Mk II, $1,006,000; 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Coupe $797,000; 1957 Porsche 356 A Outlaw by Emory, $747,500; 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona by Scaglietti, $632,000; and a 1965 Lamborghini 350 GT by Touring, $632,000.

MAG Auctions & Worldwide Auctioneers

Among the 500 cars during MAG Auctions at WeKoPa casino resort Fountain Hills, a 1960 Chevrolet Impala brought $101,000. “We expanded this event, and it’s moving in a great direction,” says Mike Oberle, company principal. “Our attendance was up from last year, and we look forward to continuing this annual event. We have found certain cars are still in high demand, some cars are flat right now, but I think overall everything’s held steady and I see the market continuing to flourish.”

And, at Singh Meadows in Tempe, Worldwide Auctioneers’ Scottsdale Auction, a factory-equipped 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster with superlative provenance secured $1,215,000, and two Lamborghini Murciélagos, a 2009 LP640, secured $346,000, and a 2004 Lamborghini Murciélago ‘SixSpeed’ Coupe with factory sport exhaust and factory two-tone yellow interior brought $250,000. Also in the top five, a Pebble Beach award-winning 1940 Packard Darrin 1807 Convertible Sedan, one of only eleven built, sold for $335,000.

The first production Sunbeam Tiger, a 1964 MK I Roadster, auctioned for $134,400. The fabulous English roadster had been comprehensively restored and featured on the Book of Norman back cover, in multiple automotive magazines and on Dennis Collins’ popular “Coffee Walk.” And, a vintage 1918 Detroit Electric Model 75 brought an impressive $112,000. This pioneer in green energy and the electric car market provides its new owner with access to AACA events and outings.

This Modern 10,519-square-foot estate by well-known Phoenix companies, architect, Ilan Baldinger, and builder, The Construction Zone, will provide its second owners direct hiking and trailbiking access to the 16,000-acre South Mountain City Park. Baldinger, LEED-AP, adds: “I am a firm believer in good design, durable materials and quality construction.” An ASU College of Architecture graduate, he has been practicing Valleywide for 45 years. Since 1986, he has been principal of Baldinger Architectural Studio in Phoenix, designing residences and specialized commercial and institutional projects.

Optimally siting the 38,246-square-foot lot and home was his central challenge. “It was important to make the house belong in the desert environment,” he says. “The site is magnificent.

It slopes naturally from the street level toward the buttes in the back of the lot. As a result, the house and the yard amenities are terraced to follow the grade. The house was designed to take advantage of the unique and private backdrop of the buttes and the mountain preserve. Every space in the house has a visual connection to this environment.”

Arustamian adds: “The views are astounding, and it feels open and spacious. I feel that this home offers the unique opportunity to be immersed in both the city and desert landscape. And, there is an abundance of natural light from all sides. You truly feel like you are in your own private paradise.”

In 2010/2011, Baldinger designed a west-end expansion, adding a large master suite on the second floor, a game room on the first floor and, “the surprise of the house,” the

wine cellar. The first-level great room is “the heart of the house, a grand public space,” he notes.

The wife, who designed the interior, is also an accomplished cook and programed an all-star kitchen, including Gaggenau ovens; a SubZero refrigerator; Dacor warming drawers; Asko dishwashers; and a dining island for prep and seating four for entertaining; a breakfast bar; and cherry and stainless steel finishes. The adjacent dining room is circular, encompassing and intimate, and the game room opens completely to the exterior, extending the space, Baldinger explains.

Arizona’s best Kentucky Derby party Returns to Turf Paradise offering fans the only Kentucky Derby Party in Arizona where you can watch and wager on the Derby simulcast pus live, local horseracing just a few yards away.

The Stella Artois Derby DayClub: Presented by Sanderson Lincoln, is returning to Phoenix’s Turf Paradise May 4th.

The majority of the party tent seating is near the finish line at Turf Paradise, Arizona’s first sports franchise, allowing fans to see local horseracing action before and after the Derby simulcast.

The event also showcases luxury vehicles from Sanderson Lincoln. Sanderson Lincoln is a Black Label dealership and a leading Lincoln dealership in Arizona.

The Nütrl Vodka Seltzer Pavilion is near the finish line but further off the backstretch than the Black Label Lounge but is still conveniently located to betting terminals, 65” TVs to watch the Kentucky Derby and live horse racing, no-host bar inside the tent for mint juleps, champagne, cocktails and close proximity to food trucks for additional refreshments. Individual tickets are also available. General admission is $45 when purchased before March 31st or $50 between April 1st and May 3rd. The Allard J2X Returns for the Track, Road & Garage: ‘Rarely SEEN. Never Forgotten’

The famed Allard J2X is back. If you’re looking to drive the Great Smoky Mountains or smoke the track or just admire automotive art in your garage, Roger Allard and his crew at Allard Motor Works in Montreal are keeping the legend alive for your driving excitement.

“The J2X MkIII is a hand-crafted version of the famed British competition roaster that stirred crowds in Europe and North America in the early 1950s,” he says. “Our modern version integrates the latest technology into the original design to provide a safer, more comfortable and reliable vehicle than its predecessor, without compromising performance.”

In 1952, English racer and car manufacturer, Sydney Allard, drove a J2s built by his Allard Motor Company to a third-place finish at the great 24 Hours of LeMans. From his London factory, Allard then delivered 99 J2s and 83 J2Xs as track cars, equipped with high-performance American powerplants from Chrysler, GM and Ford — a masterful synthesis of English design and American horsepower.

In 1995, Roger Allard (unrelated to Sydney) discovered the J2X® while traveling in England. “I began to test the viability of reintroducing not just a re-creation but a limited-production version for classic and vintage car aficionados and collectors,” he recalls.

The J2X® MkIII combines on-the-cusp structural and performance components. For instance, AMW has stretched the wheelbase by six inches, providing more rigidity for both the track and the road, and redesigned the cockpit for easier access and egress because of the car’s wider doors.

Emissions-compliant powerplants include a GM LS3 E-ROD 6.2L, generating 430 horses and 425 lb/ft of torque and a 392-ci HEMI from Chrysler. The rugged 5-speed Tremec TKO transmission offers precise and smooth shifting as well as gearing options. “The TKO is an ideal blend of brute strength and street manners,” he says.

Company technicians will customize the drivetrain to your driving lifestyle, cruising or racing. Suspensions are independent and fully adjustable. The front features a cast stainless spindle assembly and A-arms with E-Z Eccentric™ alignment; the rear is the legendary 9” Ford limited slip with 12” 4- or 6-piston drilled and slotted rotors.

In addition, the J2X® MkIII is equipped with adjustable shocks and struts; a Kevlar®-lined fuel cell embedded in the 25-gallon tank; two FIA-approved seamless-dome 35 steel double roll bars integrated into the tubular steel chassis; steel floors; and a tubular steel front bumper.

One South Carolina owner recently unleashed the J2X for its monthly run and wrote Allard: “Of all of the iconic cars we have in our collection, the J2X is the most fun car that I have ever driven.” And, a California customer noted that he “finally decided that I NEEDED an Allard much more than I needed the Ferrari!”

The 18th Annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is April 19–21

The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, presented by LPL Financial, will hold its 18th event the weekend of Friday, April 19, Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21, 2024. This year the Concours will celebrate the “Roaring 20s and the Glamorous 30s,” with 170-plus meticulously restored automobiles and commemorative art by Concours artist Scott Jacobs.

The two focal automotive events take place on Sunday, both beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m.: the ticketed La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, in Ellen Browning Scripps Park, and the free La Jolla Motor Car Classic at the Concours, on streets adjacent to the park.

Preceding the shows is the Friday Night VIP Party, 6–10 p.m. in the park. On Saturday morning, The La Jolla Tour d’Elegance, 7 a.m.–2 p.m., follows a route around scenic northern San Diego County. And, later in the day, 5–9 p.m., Porsches on Prospect is scheduled at Prospect Street.

On Sunday, the Concours will celebrate the opulence, sophistication, innovation, luxury, and automotive craftsmanship of classics such as Bugatti, Duesenberg, Packard, Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Jacobs, well known for his photorealistic paintings of motorcycles and automobiles, has portrayed Aaron Weiss’s 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III for the program cover, posters, programs, tickets and banners.

The cars will be judged in 16 categories by internationally known judges. Among other classics to appear (and their collections):

•1930 Ruxton (The Nethercutt Museum) — Of the 96 produced, fewer than 20 exist;

•1932 Chrysler CP8 (Robert Schlesier) — Only five of the original 251 survive; this one shows at the La Jolla Concours after extensive restoration;

•1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III V-12 (Thrupp & Maberly) — Commissioned by Sir Kameshwar, Maharajah of Bahadur, it thrilled the 2003 Pebble Beach Concours audience; and an

•Aston Martin DB5 — The model starred in the James Bond film, “Goldfinger.”

Michael Dorvillier, event chairman for 11 years, says, “This year, the Concours is a tribute to the marques that symbolized the pinnacle of automotive elegance and engineering in the 1920s and 1930s. The cars from this era showcase the craftsmanship and groundbreaking designs that defined these two decades.”

The La Jolla Concours d'Elegance will honor Merle Mullin, who will receive the “Automotive Legacy Award” on behalf of her late husband, Peter Mullin. And, Bruce Meyer will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for his many automotive contributions.

Proceeds will benefit the La Jolla Historical Society, which preserves the rich history of the area, and other local nonprofits.
