942 Vehicles Sold Throughout Five-Day Arizona Auction Event

Mecum Auctions’ most recent event at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, March 5-9, saw overall sales totals eclipse $54 million as 942 classic and collector vehicles hammered sold throughout the fiveday auction event. Headlined by the $1.815 million sale of a highly awarded L88 Corvette (Lot S143), top sales results at the auction included a variety of American-built favorites from Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge and Cadillac.

Ford dominated top sales, grabbing seats two through five, with a 2021 Ford GT Studio Collection Series (Lot S162) leading the pack. As one of only 20 built and showing a scant 754 miles on its odometer, the Serial No. 3 car achieved a $946,000 sale. A 2005 Ford GT (Lot S83) and a 1969 Ford Torino Talladega GPT Special (Lot S123) followed, selling for $440,000 each, and a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (Lot S154) rounded out the group, bringing $363,000.

Star-studded sales were also a main part of the Arizona excitement, with a 1969 Cadillac Eldorado (Lot F182) once owned by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll Elvis Presley causing a buzz among bidders and resulting in an astonishing $253,000 sale after an energetic round of bidding. live at the very end of Pinnacle Peak Road,’ says the wife, noting that since then neighbors have moved in, including two that are building Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired homes across from them. All of the Legend Canyon homes are designed by individual architects and designers.

Wilcox enjoys the dramatic approach to the home: “The long drive up the hill gives you the feeling that you are about to enter your sanctuary. Finishing Touch: The Finishes

The owners have made frequent day trips to the colonial-era city of San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico; an old section of the town is part of a World Heritage Site. “We adored the international flavor and, although we have not had a home there, we love the flavor,” says the wife, a painter who works out of her studio in the home.

She adds they have also spent time in Argentina and enjoyed that cultural influence. “We wanted a home that had a hacienda heritage in addition to its being in Arizona,” she says. “Janet

Brooks, the designer, was amazing. Her staff provided all of our custom furnishings.”

As a result, the home celebrates earthy tones that create the cozy, inviting hacienda atmosphere. The structure incorporates Doug fir beams that workmen cut on site because of the size required; this made the great room “feel like a cathedral,” she says. Hand-painted tiles from San Miguel de Allende provide color, and the floor tiles were also handcrafted there, including a few that have dog paw prints from the site in San Miguel de Allende where they were created. The wood floor in the office/media room was sourced from a sheep-shearing barn in Australia.

“The Mexican styling adds a sense of warmth, vibrancy, craftsmanship and cultural richness to the home,” Wilcox says, “making it a truly distinctive and memorable space to inhabit.”

Shooter’s World Hits the Mark in Now Three Valley Locations

Shooter’s World has opened a facility in Goodyear, joining the Peoria and Phoenix locations.

The three premier firearm-education venues offer climate-controlled indoor shooting ranges, the largest selection of retail guns, ammunition and gun accessories in the country and diverse educational programs for new and experienced gun owners. Ranking Arizona–The Best of Arizona Business has listed the business as a Top 10 Indoor Entertainment Attraction in Arizona for the last seven years.

“Our staff is dedicated to ensuring our ranges are well served and that customers have an experience enveloped in safety, education and entertainment,” says Chris Birchby, director of marketing and information technology for the Goodyear-based company. He notes that the company is family owned. “We believe it keeps us grounded within the community –– always remembering who we are and why we are here.”

Each location has 24 or more climate-controlled indoor lanes, including the nation’s newest, most advanced and user-friendly range in Goodyear with a system that not only holds targets in place but also introduces a level of entertainment and training capabilities with moveable targets. “It’s truly unlike any range and doesn’t compare to a single gun shop in the country,” Birchby explains.

The Goodyear location schedules a Food Truck Friday on the second Friday of every month, he adds.

“The heart of our business is a focus on education: to create responsible and confident gun owners in our community,” Birchby says. “We specialize in new-shooter engagement, breaking down barriers and intimidation, while also catering to enthusiasts wanting to further elevate their knowledge and skillsets.”

The indoor range for first-time shooters offers a variety of courses designed to boost self-defense confidence or provide a unique entertainment experience for friends and family. The Armed with Education packages cater to learners at any level, offering an affordable pathway to focused training. Shooter’s World recommends all students begin by consulting with a company team member or exploring the website to discover more about class offerings, Birchby says.

Ladies Day is every Friday. Women shoot for free and aren’t charged to use the range. They also receive free firearms rentals, providing access to 100-plus rentals at each site. And, Test-it-Tuesdays offers discounted range access for everyone, along with free gun rentals.

Shooting and practicing is “exhilarating,” Birchby says. “It’s best experienced alongside your loved ones, too, which creates a lifetime of shared memories and helps build a responsible gun-owning community. Taking the Uber-Luxury Market Pulse

That pulse is strong, not robust, but offers a healthy prognosis.

I define uber-luxury homes as those closing at $10 million and up. This is somewhat arbitrary, as every real estate market is unique; the dollar threshold for Beverly Hills and Malibu, California, as well as Manhattan and Long Island, New York, would be higher; other areas throughout the country with premium homes would be lower.

Of course, our global Private Client Group team and other local Russ Lyon|Sotheby’s International Realty experts in the Paradise Valley and Scottsdale markets sell many luxury homes that close below $10 million. Uber-luxury, however, is the apex of local real estate; often significant sales news stories, they offer qualified buyers the finest locations, acreage, views, architecture, best build quality plus other distinct assets. They are dream homes for everyone and the realities of the fortunate few.

For the most part, locally these Valley homes are in the highdemand uber zip codes: 85253, Paradise Valley, the state’s highest per-capita-income community, and 85255, magnificent

Silverleaf. Other areas often represented include Desert Mountain (85262), the seven-golf-course gated community in the high desert of North Scottsdale; Arcadia, the historic citrus community in Phoenix and Scottsdale (85018 and 85251) with its engaging range of historic adobe, ranch farm and contemporary styles; and Sedona, 90 miles north of the Valley in the world-famous red rocks; and Tucson.

During the last six months, nine Valley homes have exceeded $10 million at close, with one just below that threshold at $9.5 million at high-demand, historic Casa Blanca in Paradise Valley (85253). That’s soft compared with 2022, when we were in a Covid 19-generated seller’s market for uber-luxury homes. Sellers were receiving above asking price for their Valley luxury homes, which offered particularly desirable assets during the pandemic such as larger livable space and land.

Now, six properties are under contract or pending in the Valley, with one at $30-plus million and two others above $20 million, all in Paradise Valley (85253). Following the trend, the other three listings are in Silverleaf (85255). This is still softer than past few years’ activity.

At the same time, ARMLS offers just a little more than 80 listings above $10 million, led by a $75-million Cullum Homes residence, whose asking price soars to the Beverly Hills/ Malibu stratosphere. So far in 2024, we experienced five property owners above the $10-million asking price canceling their listings on ARMLS; perhaps these sellers will restructure their strategy and re-enter the market competitively. We have shifted to a buyer’s market for these ultra-luxury homes following a seller’s market during the pandemic years.

At the current sell rate at perhaps as many as two dozen uber homes annually sold in Arizona, sellers and their agents are confronted with more than a three-year inventory they will have to consider in terms of their wait times and possible asking prices, arrange creative terms or enhanced marketing adjustments.

Good, not Great

It’s still a good market for uber luxury but not a great one. People are just spending less on high-end real estate now. This includes undeveloped sections in thousands of continuous acres of raw land, which are not moving.

In contrast, individual lots are selling; these area even more appealing with entitlements and architectural plans in place. Developers may be leery based on the soft uber-luxury homes market, high prices for food and gas, interest rates and the political uncertainties of two wars off shore and an election year here; the result is a long lead time for developing acreage. Lots, however, provide builders and owners with more delivery assurance.

Sellers should beware of flashy results on social media that may be misreading the market.

One of the positives for the resell market is that out-of-theground uber-luxury homes are costing more and more to build. In the last two years, the average cost per square foot has risen from about $800 to almost $1,200. That increase in materials, labor and other building costs will continue based on the trends. This potentially makes the existing uber-luxury homes listings more worthwhile to buyers, so long as they are not too style specific and offer equal or near pedigree for quality materials and superb workmanship.

In addition, the Valley continues to offer an attractive résumé

to many groups, including corporations and wealthy people: an abundance of 300 days of sunshine and outdoor activities; less real estate tax; a robust economy with low unemployment; a booming construction industry; and multiple cultural/entertainment/sports venues. Over the long term, I don’t see the uber-luxury market slowing down; in fact, I expect even many more uber-luxury inventory with new amenities for collectors of cars, wine and art.

Special Homes and Amenities Get Special Interest

To sell in this market, having a very special home is advantageous. This includes an experienced broker or team willing to expend the effort required to realistically market your home in a competitive market. Let’s look at some of the factors that have made homes that closed in the last six months particularly desirable.

For instance, the top seller in the last six months, at $13.85 million, is a two-level Mediterranean estate in Silverleaf coordinated by a superlative team of architect Luis Antonio Bonilla and interior designer Jamie Rose; it has incomparable views of the McDowell Mountains, Scottsdale and Phoenix city lights and sunsets. Bonilla led another highly talented team

on an uber-luxury home. At $12.65 million, this estate on a 3.7-acre view lot in the Upper Canyon of Silverleaf also included team members Argue Custom Homes and interior designer Claire Ownby.

One-off and newly built are always desirable. A Paradise Valley home, built in 2022, sold at $13 million, without being occupied; it’s on the last vacant lot in gate-guarded Finisterre. The very accomplished J.M. Wall Development finished this on a view lot. The entertainer’s and car lover’s dream home includes a 700-bottle climate-controlled wine wall and a fourcar air-conditioned and heated garage capable of stacking cars and a gated auto court for guests.

And, at $12 million, a Contemporary-style Desert Mountain home immediately sets itself apart. You literally feel like you are on top of the world on an unobstructed, elevated hillside lot, high above the second green on the private Chiricahua Golf Course. In this Dark Sky community, the stars and city lights are spectacular.

2023 Mercedes-AMG SL 43, Redefining an AMG

When Mercedes-AMG announced this new generation SL would be available with a 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged w/ hybrid assist motor, SL fans and AMG fans alike questioned what Mercedes-Benz was thinking. “Well maybe the 4 cylinder will be considerably less expensive?” we asked ourselves. While technically true, the SL 43 AMG is $31,400 cheaper than its bigger sister SL 55 AMG, and a considerable $73,100 cheaper than the SL 63 AMG. However, the SL 43 AMG is still a six figure car, our press demo was $125,835 with all the right options. We were skeptical this 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged w/ hybrid assist motor is AMG money with none of the performance, but as a package, the SL 43 not only challenges the importance of performance figures, but what it means to be an AMG.

When reviewing the Mercedes-AMG EQE, initial thought was it would be the redefining test of “What makes an AMG, an AMG?”, but thanks to the immense power and torque produced by its EV drivetrain, engineers were able to deliver AMG performance relatively easily. However, when it comes to making a 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged motor feel like it belongs in the AMG heritage tree, and give owners the feeling their over $110,000 sports car is in fact a real AMG, the SL 43 had to deliver the AMG performance from such a small capacity motor.

Thanks to the cleverness of the 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged w/ hybrid assist and rapid AMG speed shift 9-speed dual clutch transmission, the SL 43 delivers exciting sports car performance. Proper AMGs are no longer just the twin-turbo V8s and crazy 0-60 time EV’s, it is time the smaller capacity motors deserve their recognition as well. How does this 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged motor pack so much punch? The SL 43 benefits from technology handed down straight from Mercedes-AMG’s Formula 1 team. The most effective of this Formula 1 technology in the SL 43 is the hybrid assist turbocharger, essentially a electric motor spooling the turbocharger to maximum boost much quicker than conventional exhaust driven turbochargers. The result in performance feels like you’re on boost, no matter where you are in the rev range, delivering max power and torque more consistency. There is one “issue” with this technology however, twice the SL 43 kept accelerating at full power after backing off the accelerator. This moment of unanticipated acceleration was exciting and terrifying, 375 hp feels like 1,000 hp, reminiscent of the power surge from big turbo sport cars in the ‘80s.

375 hp and 354 lbs of torque, 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds is the SL 43’s performance by the numbers, but as I mentioned earlier, this 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged w/ hybrid assist drivetrain challenges how those numbers feel when they’re put to the pavement. This little 2.0 liter motor is angry, just as angry as the twin-turbo V8s in the AMG range. Even at idle, the sports exhaust is buzzing away, under acceleration and declaration the exhaust pops and bangs just as any high strung performance car would. The transmission and on the SL43 AMG is practically perfect, an area that has been the achilles heel to AMGs and performance MercedesBenz in the past. The SL 43, in second gear, taken all the way to redline, is only going 52 mph, a completely acceptable speed to squeeze any car on Phoenix’s large surface streets. While 52 mph does not sound like much, with the SL’s top down, you hear the angry motor under the hood, exhaust popping and banging, and turbocharger spooled to 170,000 rpm, the experience is just as exciting as any other $125K sports car on the market.

Styling of the SL 43, or any new SL for that matter, makes no difference where you are in the range. In an industry made of up-badging and developing visual tactics to get customers to pay more, Mercedes-Benz has pulled a 360, the numbers on the back of the car only change what is under the hood. This generation SL is all about bringing the model back to its sports car roots, and the styling has followed suit. Body lines, size and proportions all work well in giving the sports car feel, without being “small”. Styling cues are similar to a stretched Mercedes-AMG GT S, rather than a large luxury convertible from the past.

The previous generation SL was essentially the same car from 2003-2020, just face lifted and tweaked along the way. Owners and fans of the previous SL’s styling, performance, and size, should look at the new E-Class Cabriolet. The E-Class Cab. has similar dimensions to the last generation SL, a more comfort focused ride, and offers a range topping E53 AMG Cabriolet with 429 hp and 384 lbs of torque, 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG has hit it out of the park with this latest generation of SL, and new offerings of AMG performance. The SL’s focus shifting from luxury convertible, to convertible sports car was more than just a marketing exercise, this new generation is completely fresh, starting from the ground up. What surprised us most about this SL 43 however was AMG’s ability to crank a 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged motor to 11, giving the SL 43 a true AMG driving experience. With this new 4 cylinder, 2.0 liter turbocharged w/ hybrid assist drivetrain, an AMG is no longer defined by twin-turbo V8s, but the excitement/angryness AMG builds into any of their power plants.

A pristine 1934 Packard Twelve owned by the William Lyon Family was Best in Show at the 18th Annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, April 19–21. Presented by LPL Financial and IWC Schaffhausen, the event featured world-class cars and world-class car events celebrating the “Roaring ’20s and Glamorous ’30s,” including marques such as Bugatti, Duesenberg, Packard, Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

“The 2024 La Jolla Concours d'Elegance was a tremendous success, showcasing an unparalleled collection of classic and luxury automobiles against the stunning backdrop of La Jolla’s scenic coastline,” says Robert F. Kerner Jr., co-chairman of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.

The event began April 19 with the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance Friday Night VIP Soirée on the lawn at Ellen Browning Scripps Park. Themed “Expedition d'Elegance: The Road to Opulent Adventure,” the elegant evening included music, craft cocktails and tastings of gourmet food from 19 of San Diego’s finest restaurants.

On Saturday, drivers of 80 vintage and modern automobiles enjoyed the La Jolla Concours Tour d’Elegance through the foothills of northern San Diego County. The autophile’s dream included visits to automobile collections, a private luncheon at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and a stop at “Porsches on Prospect,” where participants saw 81 Porsches and heard live music on festive Prospect Street in the village of La Jolla.

Culminating the weekend, 113 rare vehicles appeared on the lawns of La Jolla Cove’s Ellen Browning Scripps Park adjacent to the Pacific Ocean on Sunday. At the same time, participants enjoyed the La Jolla Champagne and Honey Tasting Garden, with champagne cocktails, tastings of regional nuts and flights of honey, the VIP experience with tastes from more than 19 local chefs and Hospitality Suites supplying private lounges, catering and bar service. Guests enjoyed live music and interactive installations, with a vintage flyover along the coast.

An all-volunteer committee led by Co-Chairs G. Michael Dorvillier and Robert F. Kerner Jr. and Chief Judge Nigel Matthews curated the competition. The cars were judged in thirteen classes, and 16 specialty awards were given.

Class winners included a 1932 Packard 904, American Elegance of the 20’s & 30’s (Closed Top), Tom Neal; a 1941 Mercedes-Benz Model 770K, European Elegance of the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s (Open & Closed), The William Lyon Family; and a 1966 Ford Mustang, Mustangs Pony to Power (1964–1993), The Evolution of Mustang, Kenneth Woolcott.

“I could not be any prouder of what our team has accomplished in bringing such an amazing event to La Jolla,” says Dorvillier. He notes that all net proceeds benefited local 501(c)3 nonprofit, La Jolla Historical Society. “The impact we have on our community, the car culture, our sponsors and vendors, and most importantly, our charities, is incredibly impactful. I can’t wait for 2025.”

Andy Gilberg and his March Cars

Gilberg cherishes his collection of March race cars.

He was about 14, and his uncle, the track announcer, invited him to an SCCA race in Donaldsonville, Georgia. Gilberg saw a couple of Lola Mk3 Formula Jrs, a Lotus 23 and an Elva Mk 7. “I was smitten.”

Many years later, he maintains a collection of vintage racers in Cumming, Georgia, with seven complete vehicles and two under construction.

Until he graduated from high school, Gilberg lived in Tallahassee, Florida, “hanging out with car and motorcycle delinquents,” he recalls. He graduated from engineering school in the spring of 1970 with a bachelor’s of science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York State.

Planning for the summer of 1970, he applied for work with many race car manufacturers; the drawing room at British Racing Motors (BRM), a former British Formula 1 racing team in Bourne, England, offered him a job. About a week before leaving for England, a letter arrived, noting the company had reconsidered and the position would not be available. He tossed the letter in the trash and went anyway. When he arrived, he said he didn’t know anything about the retracted offer; that got him a draughtsman job for 25 pounds per week.

On the weekends, he attended some motoring events with racers he met at a local garage in Bourne. One was the nonchampionship F1 event at Brands Hatch, where he saw legends Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon driving the first March 701s. He became fascinated by the inverted wing-profile fuel tanks on the cars, Peter Wright’s design. Wright later

helped design the Lotus 78 and 79, the first F1 cars to be designated as “ground effects” cars. These don’t have the flat bottoms that were traditional before about 1978; they use an underbody shaped like an inverted wing to create a venturi effect that sucks the car down to the pavement and enhances traction. “Peter Wright and Tony Rudd had been employed by BRM but were let go the season before I arrived. They had started construction of an inverted wing car, which I was able to see on its construction frames.”

Following the summer in England, he began his racing career in Formula Fords. He bought his first race car, a Titan Mk5 Formula Ford, in the summer of 1970 and began racing it the following season. He continued to compete with Formula Ford cars in the SCCA through 1979.

From the end of 1970 through 1971 he attended graduate school at the University of Michigan, where he earned a masters in mechanical engineering. Then, in Dearborn, Michigan, he worked for six years in the Safety Research area for the Ford Motor Company. During a year off (1972–1973), he became the engineering editor of Competition Press and Autoweek in California.

“I fell in love with the March F-Atlantic cars of the mid to late 1970s and the Indy cars of 1980s. I could not afford them, unfortunately, so eventually, when I was ready to graduate from FF, I decided to retire,” he recalls. Gilberg then sold his second race car (a Zink FF) and moved to Atlanta to work

as an engineering consultant doing vehicle fire analysis and accident reconstruction.

Rollover accidents became his specialty. These are highly correlated with ejection and unwanted door openings, he explains. That led him to research in door-latching systems and hinge hardware, which is what he is best known for (see his SAE papers: 880067; 980028; 2002-01-0689; 2004-010737; 2009-01-0073).

After two decades into a professional engineering consulting career, he hired an assistant, Jeremy Buckingham, a British expat who began his career with March. He helped with Gilberg’s day job and with the vintage Royale RP20 F2 car he was racing on the weekends.

One day, he saw an ad in the back of Racer magazine for “March car drawing sets.” He showed it to Buckingham, who responded, “They won’t be able to sell car sets.” As a former March employee, Buckingham knew that March car drawing sets were an amalgam made for each car, and those carried over from earlier cars.

The drawings were owned by one of the people who liquidated March, and he was not aware of the problem he had created for himself; he already had taken deposits on 14 car sets, Gilberg recalls. After six months of negotiation, Gilberg secured 33,000 hand-drawn originals which took years to repair, organize, catalog and scan. He now assists March

owners by supplying the reprinted drawings they need for restoration and repair.

His current collection:

•March 693 –– This is the very first March, chassis #1, from 1969. Ronnie Peterson and James Hunt both drove it in Formula 3 competition. Peterson was generally recognized as the fastest F1 driver in the 1970s, and James Hunt was F1 World Champion in 1976. “The car is closest to my heart, but it’s difficult to drive due to its very narrow power band,” Gilberg says.

•March 761B-2 –– The most satisfying car to drive is the 761B, which has had five or six different identities as a frontline F1 car. It was one of six 761s built during the 1976 season. 761-1 had four tubs that year, but by the end of the year it had ceased to exist on anything except a carnet and a chassis plate. It received the tub from 761-3 (which had two tubs during the season) for the Swedish GP and, after a crash at the Nürburgring, was rebuilt with tub #761-10, an inventory number never associated with a car.

For the winter of 1977, it was rebuilt as the press version of the 2-4-0, March’s six-wheeler F1 car. It was identified as “the press version” because it was demonstrated for the press during the winter (on a rainy day) without drive installed for the rear axle tires. It was then dismantled in the spring and used as the basis of 761B-2.

At mid-season 1977 Arturo Merzario purchased the car; it was further modified and changed from its Hollywood livery to all red and redesignated a “Merzario.” It continued life as an active F1 car into the 1978 season. Around 2000, Simon Hadfield,

Merzario’s original mechanic, restored it mechanically. It was later acquired by racing service provider Scott Drnek in the San Francisco Bay area who returned it to its original Hollywood livery. Its current configuration and livery is how it presented during the beginning of the 1977 season.

Gilberg, who had previously seen the car under restoration in Simon Hadfield’s shop, purchased it in 2005. The tub has never been drilled for a chassis plate, but he has the plate for 761-3, which also has never been drilled for rivets but does have the residue of double stick tape on its back.

•The Royale RP20 –– This is the only Royale semi-monocoque F2 car designed by Dave Beacon; The Royale RP20 F2 car is also one of one built in 1973. Although finished too late in the season to compete in many events, this car was tested by Tony Trimmer and Tom Pryce, both F1 drivers in the 1970s, Gilberg says, and it has raced in Formula 2 in Europe and in the USA in Formula Atlantic and Formula B as well as vintage and historic events.

•March 87C-25 Indy car –– Due to its position “on the bubble” as the last-place qualifier for the 1987 Indy, it received more coverage in the TV broadcast of the race than any other car except the winner, Al Unser’s March 86C. Steve Chassey worked the car from 33rd up to 13th place before the engine self-destructed.

•Swift DB2 00788, a.k.a. “the Black Lobster” –– This car was liveried to pay tribute to the famous March Red Lobster GTP car from 1983 driven by Dave Cowart and Kemper Miller. The 2-liter sports racer was based on the 1971 Ford Capri engine. Gilberg is planning to construct a new chassis for this car.

•1972 Lotus Europa, his third Europa and fourth Lotus ––Sam Nelson, the well-known engine builder and rally driver, built the still solid engine.

•2004 Mazdaspeed Mazda Miata turbo –– a street driven track car Gilberg uses at Atlanta Motorsport Park.

•March 741 –– This replica F1 car is under construction in Gilberg’s shop. Chuck Cornelison, formerly an engine specialist for Roger Penske, is rebuilding its DFV Cosworth engine.
