The greenhouse is sharply tapered at the rear, accentuating the muscular shoulder line. The elongated quarter windows terminate in a very tightly-angled version of the iconic Hofmeister kink “counter-swing”. The long, heavily raked rear window is a classic design feature of high performance luxury sports coupes of yesterday.

The rear end is composed of sculptured, emotive surfaces that emphasize the car’s width and low center of gravity. The slender all-LED rear light clusters extend deep into the flanks and add to the effect. The taillights light up uniformly in a distinctive ‘L’ shape. Twin exhaust tailpipes with a trapezoidal contour are positioned either side of the rear lower section.

The clear arrangement of the controls helps the driver to focus on what’s happening ahead. Apart from the gear selector and the iDrive Controller, the center console also accommodates the Driving Experience Control switch and the engine start/stop button, all arranged within a newly designed function cluster with active haptic feedback. The control unit for the light functions is new and now consists of buttons positioned at the bottom of the instrument panel between the steering wheel and the driver’s door. A leather M sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles for manual gear selection is standard.

Merino Individual Leather upholstery and folding rear seats as standard The newly developed sports seats offer high levels of longdistance comfort and excellent lateral support. The headrests are integrated into the backrests and can be adjusted for both height and fore/aft position. A semi-electric folding function has been included for the front seat backrests, which is activated by using a high-quality leather strap located on each seatback to facilitate convenient entry and exit for the rear passengers.

Babbo Italian Eatery: Family Yummy! written by David M. Brown “Babbo”: That’s “daddy” in Italian.

In the language of food, the Babbo Italian Eatery restaurants mean classic and contemporary dishes, with a focus on innovative cuisine in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Based in Scottsdale, the family-owned company has eight locations Valleywide: Glendale, Queen Creek, Cave Creek, Mesa, Surprise, Phoenix, Tempe and, the most recent, in Scottsdale, Talking Stick and Pima roads. The ninth will open early 2019 in Goodyear.

Designed by architect Jose Martinez at Form Design Studio, the 6,000-square-foot Scottsdale restaurant is adjacent to Talking Stick Fields, where Russo & Steele holds its annual January car auction.

Accommodating 236 guests, the new Babbo Italian Eatery features dark blue booths, family seating, a private dining room and a full bar. For its grand opening April 19, the restaurant raised and matched toward $43,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the Salt River Community Children’s Foundation.

Owner Ken Pollack is “Babbo” here. He and wife Charlotte opened the first restaurant in Arrowhead in Glendale in Volume XV, Number 06

Circuit racers when they’re not at the Inde Motorsports Ranch are Lead Professional Driver Kai Goddard and Andy Lee. With 24 years of motorsports experience, Goddard has raced in open-wheel race cars, sports car endurance racing and stock cars. Goddard most recently competed in the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb, South Africa’s premier motorsports event.

He’s done product launches, press reveals, even stunt shows.

Lee, who began his racing excelling in kart racing and drove in the TDI Cup, has participated in IMSA North America events and now drives an Audi in the Pirelli World Challenge.

“Perhaps the most rewarding thing I do here is sharing experiences with other people of all skill levels,” Goddard explains. “You can come in as an absolute novice, a beginner, and not be intimidated. You won’t be left on your own or feel overwhelmed.”

Ezra Arthur Accessories: ‘Designed for Life’ Written by David M. Brown Sebastian Sandersius was in Brussels in 2010 when he conceived the Ezra Arthur brand of boutique men’s accessories. “I was drinking beer out of what most people would consider a wine glass and listening to jazz at Les Gens Que J’aime,” the Valley resident says.

“The fashion and culture of the city inspired me greatly, and I penciled out many of my ideas for the company,” he adds. “I was greatly inspired by the high-quality fashionretail scene there; I found the shops were curated with a great balance of sophisticated French style and German precision.”

Eight years later, he and his brothers, Gabriel, Adrian and Julian, and a team of five to ten employees design and produce heirloom-quality wallets, belts, phone sleeves, optical cases, notebooks, belts, bracelets, pocket combs, straight razors, strops and, soon, rucksack-style bags.

Their factory on Jackson Street in the downtown warehouse district of Phoenix is heirloom, too. Sebastian says the building dates to the 1920s, when the Arizona Hardware Supply Company regionally distributed nuts, bolts and other parts.

In creating the Ezra Arthur line, the brothers found that Americans appreciated well-designed and well-made products, Volume XV, Number 06

too, but the consumer market here had been conditioned to accept products that were designed to be used, destroyed and purchased again, and again, and again.

This motivated the company branding, “Designed for Life”: “Our products are both designed to last a lifetime and designed for everyday life,” he says.

All are made in the Phoenix factory from the highestquality materials: full-grain leather, solid brass, Tomoe River paper, carbon fiber and others. Each piece carries a lifetime warranty.

And, all of the small leather goods are hand stitched.

“Instead of using sewing machines to assemble our goods, we meticulously and very precisely stitch them together,” he says. “The hand-stitching process is labor intensive, but the end product is much nicer and higher quality because of it.

“We go above and beyond to make products that are built to be both elegant and incredibly durable,” he adds.

While many brands were represented it was a very colorful sea of Ducatis and MV Agustas that dominated. The organizers were very pleased that so many put on their leathers and came out, even on a 106-degree day.

Given the extreme heat a much lower overall attendance was expected but even so well over 500 cars were on display and a few thousand spectators came out to admire them.

Oasis Radio 95.1 and 94.9 once again played tunes and conducted some interviews with a few of the car owners.

The show is set up with sections for America, Asian, European and Exotic Vehicles and these areas are rotated to give every category a chance to be centered. As always there is no entry fee for vehicles or for spectators, thanks to the generosity of the sponsors. The show is the perfect opportunity to bring your own pride and joy out and meet others who share your passion. There are no requirements for exhibiting a vehicle, so they range from “a work in progress rebuild” to multi-million dollar exotics. Spectators appreciate the friendliness of the owners who are always happy to talk about their cars and to have photographs taken.

The feature for next month’s show on July 7 is Red, White & Blue American Cars for Independence Day. The official hours are 7AM – 10AM but in reality the shows is usually well underway an hour earlier. The location is the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center on the north-west corner of Scottsdale Rd. and Mayo Boulevard, one block south of the 101 Freeway.

Unveiled at the Amsterdam Motor Show April 30, 1948, as Land Rover Series I, the marque evolved in its first 22 years from a Second World War-inspired four-wheel-drive to the Range Rover in 1970, which pioneered today’s luxury SUV niche.

King George VI received the 100th production car. During the second year of production, 16,000 of Series I were made.

Since then, Land Rover has sold more than seven million cars in 70 years to customers with diverse on-road and offroad needs. Approximately 80 per cent are exported to 169 countries from Coventry, England, where they are produced

by Jaguar Land Rover.

The new vehicle had made farmers happy, soldiers, rescue workers and fire personnel, commoners and a king. The open road was ahead.

On the Road for Off Road Jaguar Land Rover comprises Jaguar Cars Limited, founded in 1922, and Land Rover, 1948. Land Rover and Range Rover models are built in the United Kingdom at its Solihull and Halewood plants.

for LAND-ROVER.” Another early ad brag: “Forest streams, snowbound roads, mountainous country –– they are all one to the Land-Rover which takes them in its ample stride.”

The British Army bought an ample number, ordering 2,000 Land Rovers just a year after they appeared; 1949 was also the first year for exports. In 1953, a 107-inch long-wheelbase Series I was introduced, and in 1954, the 100,000th Land Rover was produced, and the Red Cross bought its first one.

Four years later, Series II offered a 2.25-liter engine and design refinements.

For his 80th birthday, Winston Churchill received a customized 1954 Series I Land Rover, which chauffeured the prime minister around Chartwell, his beloved 300-acre Kent estate, until he died in 1965. Sold at auction in 2012, the Rover was fitted with a wide passenger seat for Churchill’s ample bottom and a leather strap for him to grasp when entering and exiting.

In 1970, the two-door Range Rover (the Classic) debuted.

“It not only says you’ve arrived,” one ad affirmed. “It also says you’ll get home.” Another showed a back-roads-soiled car, tires to top, and jested: “Introducing the most beautiful vehicle in the world.”

These first Range Rovers were followed by a four-door Volume XV, Number 06

Range Rover in 1981, and successive generations continuing through the fourth in 2012 –– the first all-aluminum SUV. The four-door came to America in 1987. In 2005, the Range Rover Sport pulled into the market.

In 1971, Land Rover Series III was introduced, and in 1976, the one-millionth Land Rover was built. The 110/90 models in 1983 were the first Land Rover Series models to use coil springs rather than leaf ones. Seven years later, because of their extensive use in the military, fire and medical and rescue service, the original Land Rover became the “Defender,” distinguishing it from the new Land Rover Discovery.

Following were models such as the Discovery, 1989; Discovery Sport, a new premium compact SUV with 5+2 seating, 2014; the following year, Range Rover SVAutobiography, with a long wheelbase launched, in New York; and in 2017, the fourth Range Rover, the Velar.

In the last decade, significant marks include the 2010 production of the Range Rover Evoque, the world’s first luxury compact SUV. Five years later, the Evoque Convertible became the world’s first topdown luxury compact SUV. And, earlier this year, to celebrate the 70th anniversary, the Limited Edition Range Rover SV Coupe debuted at the Geneva Motor Show.

Out on the Open Road and Up on the Marquee Land Rover has dug its off-road tires deep into expeditions and competitions, almost from the start. In 1955, six college students made a first-ever London-to-Singapore journey in two Series I Land Rovers.

Sixteen years later, two Range Rovers completed a 18,000-mile Trans-America expedition along the Pan-American Highway, including a trek through the Darien Gap –– “El Tapon,” “The Stopper”: 250 miles of almost impassable rain forest jungle. The British Trans-Americas expedition started on December 3, 1971, in Anchorage, Alaska, and ended at the southernmost tip of Terra del Fuego in Sout America, June 10, 1972.

Three years later, a Range Rover completed a west-toeast Sahara desert expedition: 7,500 miles in 100 days. In 1977, a modified Range Rover won the 4x4 class in the London-Sydney Marathon –– at 18,750 miles the longestever speed-based car rally.

In 1979 a Range Rover driven by a French team won the first Paris-Dakar Rally, repeating this in 1981. In 1989, the Range Rover participated in The Great Divide Expedition. In 1984, a 110 model won its first Camel Trophy in Brazil. That event was held annually between 1980 and 2000, featuring Volume XV, Number 06

Women have loved them, too, on the highway and in other ways. In her 1950, ‘Pollyanna’, adventurer Barbara Toy crossed north Africa and the Middle East, and in 1968, six grandmothers, averaging 57 years drove three Series II Land Rovers 15,000 miles London to Australia to see their grandchildren.

The cars have been on the big screen, too, and many little screens following. In 1966, Land Rovers appeared in the inspiring Born Free, and in 1995, they were the platform for futuristic taxis in Judge Dredd.

And, two 1969 Land Rovers recently starred in Peter Rabbit, based on the Beatrix Potter characters. H&H Classics, United Kingdom, just sold one at auction. And, as part of the company’s bespoke Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, begun in 2014, a Defender and Range Rover Sport SVR were built to seat 007 for the movie Spectre.

“The Land Rover civilianized the World War Two Jeep more effectively than Willys. The provision of proper doors, lightweight aluminium bodywork, an extra forward gear and a full canvas tilt made the earliest ‘Landies’ a far more usable proposition,” says Damian Jones, Sales, H&H Classics, Warrington, Cheshire, U.K.

Arguably, Land Rover was the world’s first truly international 4x4 brand, and the Range Rover can lay claim to being the world’s first luxury off roader, too.”

Landmark ‘Landies’ •1948 Launch Prototype Land Rover –– In January, Land Rover announced the restoration of its most historically significant model: This is #7, one of three pre-production Land Rovers (numbers 5 and 3 are the others) from the Amsterdam Motor Show April 30, 1948, a landmark vehicle missing for 63 years.

Rover’s engineering director was Maurice Wilks; also a farmer, he knew his fellows needed a dependable affordable utility vehicle. A year before, he had sketched the concept on a Welsh beach –– about the best place to envision a car meant for off road.

In all, including the prototypes, Land Rover produced 48 pre-production Land Rovers. They all include thicker aluminum alloy body panels, a galvanized chassis and a removable rear tub. The engine was a 1.6-liter, running on gasoline.

The #7 prototype was kept by Land Rover until 1955 when it was sold to a number of owners, including Alexander Maddison of Alderminster near Stratford-upon-Avon, who had a dairy business and bought and sold cars in the mid ‘60s.

Before being discovered, it spent 20 years in a Welsh field before being bought as a restoration project; it then lay in a garden, just a few miles from Solihull, U.K., where the car had been built in the Land Rover original factory.

Jaguar Land Rover Classic specialists researched company archives for its ownership history and confirm its provenance.

The car is scheduled for completion this year, with the original Light Green paint as part of a patina restore, that is, the car will run to original form but still look 70 years old.

“This Land Rover is an irreplaceable piece of world automotive history and is as historically important as ‘Huey,’ the first pre-production Land Rover,” says Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic director.

•1970 Range Rover –– After three years in design, prototypes for the new Range Rover model were tested in England in 1969, cleverly badged as “Velar”. “Velare” is the Italian verb for veil or cover.

King saw the future for Suburban Vehicles, SUVs, which would offer the flexibility of an off-roader with appointments for everyday use.

Included were four-wheel dual-circuit brakes and a collapsible steering column, for example. And, designer David Bache added style, with features such as the unique roofline and hood. Soon after its reveal, the Range Rover was the first car shown at the Louvre in Paris.

Special editions appeared, led by a group of 200 four-door models by Swiss Monteverdi, which created the production four-door model in 1981. A Vogue magazine edition then appeared; soon 80 percent of Range Rover production was four door, emphasizing its flexibility with families, shoppers, golfers and other buyers.

In 1994 came the second-generation Range Rover, the P38A, after the building in which it was developed, and in 2001, the third-generation Range Rover, the L322, appeared, Volume XV, Number 06

and in 2012 the lightweight fourth-generation Range Rover was first shown in Paris.

•1976 – The 1,000,000th Landie –– A leaf-sprung Series III, “one million” is built at Solihull.

•1989 Land Rover Discovery –– “Project Jay,” as it had been called since 1986, bridged the utilitarian Defender and the premium Range Rover. Off-road capability was necessary, but this new vehicle would have to also be versatile, incorporating a seven-seat interior, for example, to accommodate young soccer stars, car-poolers and others.

After debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12, the new car was introduced into the United States in 1994 with a V-8. On February 29, 2012, a fourth-generation Discovery became the one-millionth of the model.

Brown Photos by Kate Auda Design by Matthew Cohn Peter Mullin of the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard accepted the Best of Show for its 1939 Bugatti Type 57SC Aravis Cabriolet at the 14th-annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance the weekend of April 6–8.

More than 10,000 attended the Concours and the contemporaneous La Jolla Motor Car Classic where they enjoyed 135-plus cars at the Concours and more than 80 at the Motor Car Classic.

The automobiles were curated by an all-volunteer committee led by Concours Chairman G. Michael Dorvillier, Chief Judge Nigel Matthews and Chair of the Car Selection Committee Robert F. Kerner Jr.

The featured marque at the Concours, Lincoln and Lincoln Continental, was represented by 20 classics. In addition to the Class 2A-Lincoln Open (1917–1967) and 2B-Lincoln Closed (1917–1969) classes, four Lincolns were chosen as the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance Specialty Winners.

These were a 1966 Lincoln Continental 4-Door Convertible from the Calumet Collection, Mayor’s Award; 1956 Lincoln MKII 2 Door Coupe, Karen and Stuart Tanz, People’s Choice Award; 1926 Lincoln Dual Cowl Phaeton, Russ Karlen, Best Preserved of Marque Award; and a 1929 Lincoln Aero Phaeton Dual Cowl Phaeton, Stan Lucas, LPL Summit Best of Marque.

On Friday evening, a 1930s–1940s-themed Rolls-Royce Dapper and Delight Soiree was presented by UBS Financial Services and Schubach Aviation.

On Saturday, more than 200 participated in the Porsche San Diego Tour d’Elegance, with stops at Porsche San Diego, Chuck Spielman’s Only Yesterday Museum, The Calumet Collection and the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Saturday evening, entrants, judges, sponsors, and 1,000 guests enjoyed the Aston Martin Art Deco Party at the Cove presented by Fraser. They were entertained by flamingo stilt walkers in an Art Deco Miami-inspired VIP reception and enjoyed food from 20 restaurants, drinks at five hosted bars including candy-inspired craft cocktails by Hendricks Gin, a silent and live auction, an Aston Martin cavalcade and live entertainment from Dave Patrone.

“This event would not be possible without all of my committee members and volunteers, and I am truly grateful for the talent, inspiration and energy they bring year after year to the Concours,” says G. Michael Dorvillier, chairman of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.

The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering Returns to Monterey August 24 Written by David M. Brown The 16th Annual The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering returns to Monterey Car Week Friday, August 24, at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

The ticketed luxury-lifestyle event will feature 200plus classic automobiles and motorcycles from the world’s pre-eminent sports and racing brands, six international culinary pavilions and fine wines in a family-friendly, petfriendly atmosphere.

Those are mind-numbing numbers for the 28 years of the California Mille, the annual motoring salute to Italy’s most famous open-road race, the Mille Miglia (thousand mile) that ran from 1927 to 1957.

Some 60+ plus vehicles that could have qualified for the Mille Miglia, arrived at San Francisco’s Nob Hill on April 15th for the biggest free car show of its kind in the U.S. And record numbers of fans turned out to see the cars and meet the drivers.

The next day, the California Mille roared north—passing through time capsule town like Birds Landing, Isleton, Honcut and Loma Rica, ending day one for a first night’s stay at Lake Tahoe.

Over the next three days, the Mille toured northern Nevada, discovered the delights of California’s wine country, and wound up the tour at Cavallo Point in Marin County overlooking San Francisco and the Bay. Plans are already underway for the 29th tour scheduled for April 28 through May 2, 2019.
