The distillation of extraordinary design, groundbreaking technologies and the ultimate in handling, performance and driver enjoyment, the Aventador SVJ creates pure driving perfection, taking the concept of a super sports car to a new dimension. The new Aventador SVJ, where SV historically stands for Superveloce - meaning ‘superfast’ - takes the ‘Jota’ suffix, denoting its track and performance superiority: the Aventador SVJ has already claimed its position as the NürburgringNordschleife production car record holder, completing the 12.8 mile lap in just 6:44.97 minutes. With its optimized power plant making it the most powerful series production V12-engined car produced to date by Lamborghini, the SVJ features an increase in power to 770 hp at maximum 8,500 rpm. The SVJ outputs 531 ft/lb of torque at 6,750 rpm, while a dry weight of just 3,362 lbs gives the SVJ a weightto-power ratio of 4.3 lbs/hp. The SVJ accelerates from standing to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and from 0 to 124 mph in 8.6 seconds. A top speed of more than 217 mph is complemented Volume XV, Number 09

by a braking distance of 62 mph to 0 in 98 feet. The Aventador SVJ is, however, more than a super sports car achieving the top numbers. The development philosophy of the Aventador SVJ and its very essence in terms of design, aerodynamic technologies and efficiency, weightto-power as well as performance, is to create a demanding driver’s perfect car. The Aventador SVJ – designed for aerodynamic supremacy Every feature of the Aventador SVJ resonates its aerodynamic prowess: the SVJ is significantly enhanced in appearance compared to the Aventador S, with every facet of its ‘form follows function’ design a reminder of its raison d’être on road and track: innovate to be the best. The main goal in design was a significant downforce improvement compared to the previous Aventador SV: +40% on both axles with an improved drag coefficient -1%. From the front the car is wider: a new front bumper with integrated side fins features a new air intake and highlights the inclusion of Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA), Lamborghini’s patented active aerodynamics technologies. The disconnected front splitter continues the impression of a floating component, while providing a channel for airflow. A tri-dimensional air outlet on the hood directs airflow, improves both drag and downforce, and clearly alludes to the aerodynamic purpose of the SVJ’s design. The upper body aerodynamic optimization has contributed 70% to the total downforce improvement in the SVJ over the SV. The bigger side air intakes and the new front side fins reduce drag and improve overall cooling. An improved underbody aero design with vortex generators works in conjunction with front diffusers and a new, extreme-design rear diffuser, together with divergent fins, contributes 30% to the total downforce improvement.

Highline Autos The rear wing of the SVJ has been designed for best aerodynamic efficiency, based on a new air foil; an optimized ALA 2.0 system; and side winglets to reduce turbulence while providing high downforce on the straight as well as in high speed corners. At the rear of the car the position of the high-mounted naked exhaust resembles those found on extreme motorbikes, as well as saving weight due to its proximity to the engine: the exhaust system itself is also lighter. The Omega-shape rear bumper incorporates a massive new diffuser that contributes to downforce, while a new high-mounted rear wing is produced entirely in carbon fiber with its integrated ALA system. The new rear engine bonnet has been redesigned for the SVJ: it is made from lightweight carbon fiber and removable via quick release clips in a reference to motor racing. It also adopts the ‘Y’ theme that reveals the updated V12 power plant below, while accenting the car’s high performance characteristics. Super-light ‘Nireo’ aluminum rims are designed specifically for the SVJ, saving weight and contributing to the extreme dynamism of the car. Optional ‘Leirion’ aluminum rims with ‘Y’ and hexagonal details are also available. The Italian flag detail on the side wing is a reminder of the Lamborghini’s Italian super sports car heritage. Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva 2.0 Lamborghini’s patented ALA system was first seen on the Huracán Performante, and has been developed to an enhanced

level for the Aventador SVJ, now ALA 2.0, including new optimized air inlets and aero channel designs. The system has been re-calibrated taking into account the enhanced vehicle’s lateral accelerations. The ALA system actively varies aero load to achieve high downforce or low drag, depending on dynamic conditions. Electronically-actuated motors open or close active flaps in the front splitter and on the engine bonnet that steer the airflow, front and rear. Utilizing Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva 2.0 (LDVA 2.0) with improved inertial sensors that govern all the car’s electronic systems in real time, the ALA system flaps are activated in less than 500 milliseconds to ensure the best aerodynamic set-up of the car in every driving condition. When ALA is off, the active flaps are closed, generating the desired high downforce for high speed cornering and full brake conditions. When ALA switches to ‘on’ the front flaps are opened, reducing air pressure on the front spoiler and directing air flow via an inner channel and through the specially-shaped vortex generators on the underside of the car. This drastically reduces drag and optimizes conditions for maximum acceleration and top speed. When ALA is off the rear flaps are also closed, allowing the rear wing to act as a traditional fixed wing. Stability is enhanced in high speed cornering and full braking by creating maximum vertical downforce. When ALA is ‘on’ the flaps on the engine bonnet open in order to stall the wing for improved

Highline Autos drag in high speed conditions. In addition, the rear wing’s inner air channel is split right and left, allowing aero vectoring for high speed cornering. Depending on the direction of the turn, the LDVA 2.0 instructs ALA to be switched on in either the right or left side of the wing, increasing downforce and traction on the inner wheel and counteracting the load transfer in rolling conditions. This in turn optimizes the chassis’ momentum, requiring a reduced steering angle and improving the car’s overall dynamic stability. The aero vectoring technology in the SVJ has been further developed to improve the aero-loading effects on the inner wheel by 30% compared to the original system. Engineering technology The enhanced powertrain features a new titanium intake valve with a new-shape intake runner and length, with a modified intake cylinder head duct for higher flow coefficient. The new, lightweight exhaust system reduces backpressure as well as producing the most emotive sound, and the optimized seven-speed Independent Shifting Road (ISR) gearbox has been calibrated for the car’s increased performance in terms of both power and torque. The Aventador SVJ’s vertical, lateral and longitudinal dynamics have been re-engineered in LDVA 2.0, with algorithms fully integrated within ALA 2.0 to reflect the exceptional downforce generated and optimize performance: the result of significant R&D investment and collaboration with the CFD team. The SVJ’s suspension has been reworked, providing higher mechanical and aerodynamic grip. Anti-roll bar stiffness has been improved by 50% compared to the Aventador SV, compensating against roll and improving aero efficiency. A higher damping force range, increased by 15% over the SV, and Lamborghini’s Magneto Rheological Suspension (LMS) has been recalibrated to improve body and wheel control with a focus on track performance. The Aventador SVJ’s rear-wheel steering (LRS) is further engineered to exploit the aero load in every environment, providing exceptional stability in high speed conditions and improving agility in cornering to enhance average speed in all dynamic conditions. The Aventador SVJ’s steering has also been developed to provide the feedback demanded in high-performance track and racing environments. The rebalanced power steering reflects the specific aero load and tires, and the Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) is recalibrated to further improve

steering precision and natural feedback. The Lamborghini SVJ’s four-wheel drive system has improved torque split to maximize traction and agility, with the higher stability of the SVJ allowing a further 3% of torque to be sent to the rear axle compared to the SV. The rearwheel steering has been developed to further improve the car’s stability while reducing braking distances, particularly in combined braking/turning conditions such as high speed cornering. ESC has been enhanced for improved cornering and driver experience in extreme handling conditions, and ABS has been specifically tuned for the improved grip provided by the tires and ALA system. New Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires have been specifically developed, according to Lamborghini’s brief for the SVJ: the tires provide higher vertical stiffness to accommodate the SVJ’s higher downforce, as well as provide a high grip level to enhance overall vehicle performance. Featuring a specific tread design, the tires are designed to optimize performance on both road and track. Optional street-legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires can be mounted specifically for track use. A driver’s car The Aventador SVJ is a driver-focused car, developed to maximize the union between driver and car in the most extreme road and track conditions and ensure the most rewarding experience. With Lamborghini’s three driving modes, Strada, Sport and Corsa, as well as the EGO option allowing the driver to further customize his preferences for car set-up, the cockpit features Kombi graphics on the TFT digital dashboard display as well as showing live status of the ALA functions. Barrett-Jackson’s Craig Jackson and Team Find ‘Little Red’ Shelby 500

Craig Jackson took his car magnifying glass out and found a big prize in north Texas. The Holy Grail car is “Little Red,” the 1967 Ford Shelby GT500 EXP Prototype: the only GT500 coupe (hardtop) built by Shelby American, the company founded by legendary racer and entrepreneur, the late Carroll Shelby; the only GT coupe factory equipped with dual-quads; and just the second GT500 coupe to be serialized and completed. Jackson, chairman and CEO of Scottsdale-based BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction Company, classic car restoration specialist Jason Billups and a team of automotive experts located and verified the car in March. Jackson collaborated with Shell and Pennzoil to announce the find on August 17 at the annual Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan. The same owner had stored it outside for more than two decades, so the car will undergo a frameoff restoration. “Finding Little Red is the discovery of a lifetime,” Jackson says. “Countless enthusiasts and experts have searched for Little Red since it went missing in the 1960s. Many believed it was destroyed when the car was no longer needed.” The big-block Shelby notchback coupe was one of a pair of “experimental” cars created by Ford Motor Company and

Shelby American. Guided by Lee Iacocca, the car eventually became the model for Ford’s popular 1968 Mustang California Special before it was presumed lost. “After our initial research, we realized that, like others before us, we were using the wrong search criteria,” Billups explained. “Everyone looked for Little Red using the Shelby serial number, which would eventually lead to a dead end. Instead, we located the car’s original Ford VIN number, and that led us to its original registration and eventually to its last owner.” Jackson, Billups, automotive journalist Al Rogers and Ford Mustang and Shelby specialist Todd Hollar were assisted in authentication by Mustang expert Kevin Marti. “Walking up to Little Red was like being on hallowed ground,” Rogers said. Sticks & Paddles – what does that mean? Well in case you’re not a car enthusiast, in the good old days when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, cars all had manual transmissions or stick shifts as they were more commonly called. Then the high-performance car companies developed semi-automatic transmissions that the driver could control with a right paddle for upshifts and the left paddle for downshifts. These paddle shifts are now faster than shifting manually.

So the theme this month placed stick and paddle shift cars of the same make or model next to each other to highlight the incredible developments not only in transmissions but in styling, motors, suspensions, aerodynamics and even colors.

A very special treat was a very rare Jaguar XK-SS from the 1950’s next to a Jaguar E-Type from the 60’s and a current Jaguar F-Type. As iconic a race car as the XK-SS was the 50’s era Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing next to a modern SLS Gullwing.

There was a not so old and still spectacular 2006 Ford GT next to a brand new 2018 Ford GT. A Porsche 356 from the mid 1900’s sat next to a contemporary Porsche 918 and across from three very colorful, lime green Porsches – a GTR, GT2RS and GT3RS. A 1972 Ferrari Daytona with its front engine V12 and skinny tires sat next to a new Ferrari 812 Superfast, also a front engine V12 but sitting on very fat rubber. Similarly, a 1964 Alfa Romeo highlighted automotive evolution next to its young sister – an Alfa Romeo 4C. On the American cars side there was a 60’s era Mustang next to a new Mustang GT350R. A 1957 Corvette still looked as spectacular as it’s modern counterpart ZR1. There were so many examples of old and new from Corvette, Camaro, Mustang and other domestic brands, and the same from Italian, German and British brands and even some Asian ones.

The organizers have moved the show back its original venue on the north side of the huge parking lot at the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center. This was done to provide more space and eliminate a busy and somewhat dangerous street with both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The show is free to those showing a vehicle and to spectators. It is held from 7AM – 10AM on the first Saturday of every month all year long. The next show is on Saturday October 6. For details www.scuderiasouthwest.com.

“A dozen or so senators and congressman made sure that we had an unfunded mandate from the federal government to celebrate the efforts of those who fought on the battlefield and supported the war effort on the home front,” says Tom Czekanski, senior curator and restoration manager for the museum. He notes that the work at the Capitol followed a visit to the just-opened museum by World War II veterans and senators, Daniel Inouye (D, Hawaii) (1924–2012), and Ted Stevens, (R, Alaska) (1923–2010). TripAdvisor’s #2 museum in the world and the nation, the museum offers visitors a wide-ranging look at the war that took more than 60 million lives worldwide. For those interested in honoring the generation that saved the world from tyranny and fascism, the museum offers immersive historical exhibits and first-person oral histories that take you inside the story of the war: why it was fought, how it was won and what it means today.

Men served. Women served. Vehicles served them. Winning the war was willpower, heart and smarts, leadership and being in the right. But it was also the right technology: the Norden bomb site, Radar, degaussing, atomic power and increasingly sophisticated vehicles that proved their mettle in the most challenging times. A number of these people and materials movers are among the thousands of artifacts showcased at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, designed by architect Bart Voorsanger, Voorsanger Mathes LLC, New York City. On a six-acre campus in New Orleans’s Historic Warehouse District, the venue opened June 6, 2000, as The National D-Day Museum. 1943 Ford-American LaFrance Fire Truck Pre-Restoration

The museum holds 10 aircraft, five boats, three tanks, one halftrack, five trucks and 14 other vehicles. The earliest is a 1938 Mercedes Benz W 136 sedan, used by occupying German forces, purchased from a museum in France. The newest is a 1945 LVT or Landing Vehicle Tracked, typically used in the Pacific. Museum founder and World War II historian, Stephen Ambrose, (1936–2002), Ph.D., inspired and guided the early development of The National D-Day Museum with close friend, Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller, Ph.D, a colleague in the History Department at the University of New Orleans and vice chancellor of the University. Collecting the artifacts began even before the museum was founded in 1994. “When he was researching his books, Ambrose would interview veterans, who would often give him items such as a helmet and show him where a bullet had struck. As he built up a collection of oral history, he also began seeing that these artifacts had to be preserved.” Today’s collection includes restored and working macroartifacts as well as on-site restoration. Visitors can view the pieces, viscerally connecting them with history. “These represent the equipment that was used to win World War II,” Czekanski says. Offsite, you can ride or take a tour (8 years old and over) on a restored PT-305 on Lake Pontchartrain throughout the week, with discounts available for seniors, children, military and museum members (pt305.org). the Mediterranean for 18 months to twilight-years oyster service on the Chesapeake. The museum completed the restoration after acquiring the boat from another museum in Galveston, Texas. In addition, the museum offers online collections, virtual field trips, webinars, educational outreach and travel programs and schedules an annual International Conference. Onsite, a period dinner theater and restaurants are also available. A $400-million expansion is adding two pavilions and other enhancements. The newest exhibit, “The Arsenal of Democracy: The Herman and George R. Brown Salute to the Home Front,” showcases personal narratives, artifacts and museum content to highlight facets of American life stateside during the war. “The exhibit’s nine galleries offer an evocative look at pre-war stories, domestic debates, the attack on Pearl Harbor, propaganda, military recruitment, manufacturing efforts, and the Manhattan Project, which ended the conflict,” Czekanski says. A Troupe of Winning Vehicles •1943 Ford-American LaFrance Fire Truck –– Undergoing a total restoration, this is an example of the most common fire truck built during the war intended for stateside use fighting structural fires. During the raid on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Japanese pilots targeted the fleets of bright red fire

trucks, as the country wanted to debilitate response efforts following the attack on the U.S. Navy fleet. After that day, the brass ordered all military fire trucks to be painted green to help prevent such future devastation, Czekanski explains. The Museum’s Ford-LaFrance, donated in April 2009 by Steve Owen of Pell City, Alabama, will be restored as an Army fire engine and repainted in its original green color.

“Higgins placed his design in an open competition on the Chesapeake, and the Navy thought his boats were best,” Czekanski says. So, this Landing Craft Personnel (Large), or LCP(L), was approved for production and used in the invasions of Guadalcanal and North Africa in 1942. At first, separate landing craft were used for troops and vehicles, the LCP(L)s and the LCVs (Landing Craft, Vehicle). The LCP(L) was designed without a ramp. “Troops unloaded from the LCP(L) by jumping over the side, which proved unsatisfactory because it’s a long drop,” he says. But a U.S. Marine stationed in China in 1939 noticed that the Japanese, who had invaded and occupied the country, were using these boats with ramps and noted that in a report to the U.S. Navy, he explains. Eventually, that insight was attended to, and Higgins adapted production to include the ramps by combining the LCP(L) and LCVs designs into the LCVP. This craft, which is now the most famous of Higgins’ designs and is often referred to as the “Higgins Boat,” allowed infantry or small vehicles to exit through a front ramp. This is the boat type you see in footage of D-Day, as young men gallantly faced down death on the French beaches. Many were, indeed, moments from death. The LCVP could carry 36 combat-equipped infantrymen or 8,000 pounds of cargo. During World War II, 23,398 of these were produced in the United States, most but not all by Higgins. Higgins Boats changed the way war was fought in both the Pacific and European theaters. “Previously, navies would have to attack ports, which were usually heavily defended.

•Higgins Boat –– When the museum was in planning, attempts were made to find an original Landing Craft Vehicle for Personnel (LCVP), but none could be found, even in their birthplace, New Orleans. The boats, with the exception of the ramps, were made of wood, so they deteriorated quickly after the war, Czekanski says. “Someone in San Francisco had been using one as a shed, and we heard that it was there with the steel ramp still in place sitting in the back yard. “The rest of our boat was built by volunteers including people who had worked at Higgins Industries in New Orleans during the war,” he says. “It was inspected and approved by the Navy lieutenant who originally accepted boats at the Higgins factory.” In the late 1930s, the U.S. military began developing small boats for carrying troops from ships to open beaches. Lumberman Andrew Jackson Higgins had been manufacturing shallow-water work boats to support lumbering and trapping in the Louisiana bayous (and, apparently, selling boats to rumrunners during Prohibition) and adapted his Eureka Boat to meet the military’s specifications for a landing craft. By using Higgins Boats, armies could unload across an open beach and have more options in choosing their attack points,” Czekanski notes. This also stretched the defending armies. “Instead of concentrating on only a few entry points, defenders had to cover more shoreline.” The success of these boats ensured that Higgins Industries would be a major war employer. A small workforce of only 75 workers in 1938 grew to more than 20,000 by 1943. The Higgins boat also had cultural impact. The workforce was the first in New Orleans to be racially integrated, including undrafted white males, women, African Americans, the elderly and physically challenged persons. “All were paid equal wages according to their job rating,” Czekanski says. “They responded by shattering production records, turning out more than 20,000 boats by the end of the war.”

“It was donated in restored condition by a dentist in Arkansas who had purchased it, then, after discussion with the museum, one Christmas afternoon, loaded up the family and drove it down in a trailer.” •1941 Ford GP –– Ford began producing jeeps in 1941. As with the Willys MAs, the first Ford jeeps had welded steel grills known as “slat grills.” Many existing civilian components were incorporated into the design in order to speed production. One example is the gauge cluster, which was already in production for Ford civilian vehicles. Many of the first jeeps were sent out with “lend lease,” in which the United States traded military equipment for foreign bases. This jeep is exhibited as if on the assembly line with body and chassis separated, providing visitors with a seldom seen view of a key vehicle to winning the war.

•WC-54 1944 Dodge Ambulance –– Rated as a ¾-ton vehicle, this was the standard American ambulance during the war and could hold four patients on stretchers or seven seated patients. Ambulances were the only tactical vehicle that came standard with heaters. The body was also insulated with corrugated cardboard. “They understood how important it was to keep patients warm to help prevent shock,” Czekanski says, noting that this one served in the American Army and then the French Army. •Landing Vehicle Tracked, Mark 4, 1945 –– The LVT became the principal vehicle for landing troops on the beach in the last years of the war in the Pacific. It is a counterpart to the Higgins Boat. In responding to hurricane rescue efforts in Florida, Donald Roebling developed the LVT. His great-grandfather was John A. Roebling, who began the design of the Brooklyn Bridge. “It is an amphibian that does not rely on a propeller;

it moves forward in water or land if it floats or not. This made it very useful for crossing reefs in the Pacific,” Czekanski says. This vehicle was designed by the Food Manufacturing Corporation and built by the St. Louis Car Company of St. Louis in 1945. This vehicle has essentially the same power train as the M3A1 Stuart tank.

flame-thrower version, a mine-exploding flail version, and a fording kit that enabled the Sherman to cross relatively shallow water without swamping the engines. This Sherman is an M4A3E9 built by Ford Motor Company in 1943. The extra armor plates — “appliqué armor” — were intended to protect vulnerable spots from anti-tank fire. This Sherman also has an improved cupola and hatch that provided enhanced visibility and protection for the tank commander. •M4A3 Sherman Medium Tank (currently not displayed) – The M4 Sherman Medium Tank was America’s primary tank throughout World War II. Initially developed to replace the M3 Grant/Lee Medium tank, the first Shermans were manufactured by Lima Locomotive Works in 1942. By 1943, Sherman tanks were on the front lines of North Africa where they proved to be relatively effective against the German Panzer Mk. III and Panzer Mk. IV, but they were thoroughly outclassed by the formidable Tiger, Panther and King Tigers. More than 55,000 Shermans were produced between 1942 and 1945, and they were used in every theater of combat. Shermans were used not only by the United States but also by Great Britain, China, the Free French and even the Soviet Union. First place, start to finish! This year’s Monterey Car Week in August –– auctions, shows, concours and car camaraderie ––ascended the podium again. At RM Sotheby’s, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO became the highest selling car ever at auction, generating an astounding $48,405,000 million. And, at Gooding & Company’s 15th annual Pebble Beach Auctions, a 1935 Duesenberg SSJ, is now the most valuable pre-war car ever sold at auction, bringing $22 million. Another Duesy, a 1931 Model J SWB Sport Convertible Sedan, was the top seller at Worldwide Auctioneers Pacific Grove event at $1.32 million. For the 21st annual Bonhams Monterey, classic European sportscars dominated, led by a magnificent 1948 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Competizione Berlinetta, $3,525,000, and a rare 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Sports Roadster which sold for $3,277,500. Topping Mecum Auctions’ 10th annual daytime event was a 1933 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Coupe Disappearing Top Roadster (Lot S93), which brought $3.85 million, followed by a 307-mile 2014 hybrid-drive Ferrari LaFerrari (Lot S111), $3.19 million. And Drew Alcazar, after racing at Laguna Seca during the day, sold the first unencumbered 2007 Ford GT at public auction during his 18th Russo and Steele Monterey auction for $1,540,000. A 1953 Lancia Aurelia PF200C, owned by Anne Brockinton Lee of Nevada, was the Rolex Circle of Champions “Best of Show” at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and Best in Show at the week’s culminating Sunday event, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® was a 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta, from the garage of David and Ginny Sydorick, Beverly Hills. And, the week’s other events, RetroAuto, Concours Italiano, the Carmel Mission Classic and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, also provided hours of racing thrills and car-culture excitement for thousands of attendees. “It was another amazing Car Week for Monterey County. This series of events draws visitors and attention from around the world and is a cornerstone for our destination’s hospitality industry,” says Tammy Blount-Canavan, president and CEO for the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our organization paid particular attention this year on ensuring visitors were prepared to be responsible guests with our Sustainable Moments initiative, which focuses on protecting our region.”

Europe Shimmers at Bonhams and Mecum Posts Record Increase Bonhams, the longest continuous auction on the Monterey Peninsula, returned, per tradition, to the Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel; the event was held with The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering 2018. Auctioneers Malcolm Barber, James Knight and Rupert Banner offered 135 cars and delivered a 82-percent sellthrough for a total of $37.7 million. The Walter and Emily Mead and Robert Koons collections were totally sold. Other European sportscars included a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet that achieved an auction model-record $1,682,500. A 1953 SIATA 208 S Spider –– one of 37 built –– attracted $1,655,000; the surviving-example 1928 Bentley 6½-Liter Open Sports Tourer by Barker, $1,655,000; and a 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Sport Coupe de Ville, featuring one-off Saoutchik coachwork, brought $962,000. Porsches were led by a 1996 911 GT2 Clubsport, $1,105,000; 1997 993 Turbo S, $489,000; 1989 930 Turbo “Slantnose” Cabriolet, $456,000; and a 1991 964 Carrera 4, $156,800, a world auction record for the model. America wasn’t left out at Bonhams with the sale of a 1921 Stutz Series K Bearcat –– in one family since new –– to an American collector for $478,000, a new auction record. All prices include buyer’s premium. “Our strength as an international business brought a carefully curated selection of cars together, which was appreciated by an equally broad cross-section of buyers,” says Banner, Group Motoring director for London-based Bonhams. Jakob Greisen, vice president of US Motoring, adds, “Fresh to market cars and especially cars with documented provenance were a key focus, and collectors responded enthusiastically.” The three-day Mecum Auctions posted a 38-percent increase in total sales, reaching $47 million –– the highestVolume XV, Number 09

grossing Monterey auction in Mecum’s ten years on the peninsula. In all, 394 exceptional autos were sold by the Walworth, Wisconsin-based company. A 2003 Ferrari Enzo (Lot S48.1) brought $2.86 million and a 1989 Porsche 962 (Lot S126) attracted $2.2 million. Another Duesenberg among the top sales was a 1929 Model J Convertible Sedan (Lot S116.1) from the Academy of Art University Collection, $1,155,000 million. Two other stars, off and on the track, were the 100th Indy 500-winning 2012 Dallara DW12 Honda Indy Car (Lot S90), which fetched $1.127 million. The car was offered with an unusual engine lease agreement allowing the new owner to take possession of the car’s race-winning powerplant. And, from the movies: The 1985 Modena GT Spyder California (Lot S189) in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was just the ticket at $407,000. “Much anticipation along with a very expensive and diverse line up set the stage for Mecum’s 10th year at Monterey. $21,455,000, the last competition car built during the David Brown era, which contested Le Mans in 1963 with Phil Hill and Lucien Bianchi driving. The 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, chassis no. P/1016, part of the trio of GT40s that swept to first, second and third overall at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, brought $9,795,000. In addition, the 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder sold for $4,900,000, and a 1956 Maserati A6G/2000 Zagato racer, $4,515,000, a new record for the model at auction. A U.S.-spec 1990 Ferrari F40 attained an above-estimate $1,710,000, and a one-of-25 1998 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR broke the former record for the model at $4,515,000. A never-raced 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 ‘Laureus’ sold for $885,000, with proceeds befitting the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Held annually on the waterfront downtown, Russo and Steele totaled $8.5 million in sales. In addition to the Ford GT, a fully restored 1984 Lamborghini Countach sold for $308,000, and a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 $305,250. “Another Monterey marathon extravaganza is in the rear view mirror and, as always, it was action packed, with clients and attendees alike enjoying our patented ‘Auction In The Round’ on at Fisherman’s Wharf,” says Alcazar, founder and CEO of the Scottsdale-based company. “I believe I was the only auction owner who raced three cars at WeatherTech Laguna Seca for the morning sessions Volume XV, Number 09

and then was back on the block at night,” he adds. Among those cars was a 1966 Shelby GT350, which ran in Group 6B - 1963-1966 GT Cars over 2500cc on Sunday. Worldwide Auctioneers, Gooding & Company Other top sellers for Worldwide Auctioneers Pacific Grove Auction were a 1962 Shelby Cobra (#20), $990,000; two Duesenbergs, a 1936 Model JN LWB Tourster (#57), $775,500, and a 1922 Model A Sport Phaeton (#60), $260,000. The Auburn, Indiana-based company also sold two early Locomobiles, a 1916 Model 38 Collapsible Cabriolet (#1), $473,000, and a 1927 Model 90 Sportif (#12), $150,000. Finally, a 1958 Porsche 356A/1600 Speedster (#29) brought $425,000 and a 1939 Talbot-Lago T23 Major 4-Litre Cabriolet (#59), $397,000. At Gooding & Company’s 15th annual Pebble Beach Auctions, the SSJ was one of 25 cars exceeding $1 million. Built for actor Gary Cooper, this is one of only two of the remarkable SSJs built, and this was the first time one has been sold at auction. Renowned auctioneer Charlie Ross also gaveled down a 1955 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spider by Frua for the world record price of $5,170,000, and two Porsches also established world records, a 1959 Porsche 718 RSK, $3,740,000, and a 2007 Porsche RS Spyder, the first RS Spyder ever at auction, $4,510,000. Sedan, owned by Larry Nannini, was named Best in Show at the Carmel Mission Classic, held at the famous basilica. The other winning cars were a 1967 Buick Skylark GS400 Funny Car, John Lipori; 1957 Ford Thunderbird, Greg Hansen; and Marilyn Messina’s 1967 Silver Shadow Rolls Royce. “We raised approximately $100,000 for our charities and had approximately 1,000 folks through the gate,” says Frank Dipaoli, co-founder of the annual car gathering. “The blessing of the cars was also very warmly received and welcomed by the crowd.” The 33rd Concorso Italiano welcomed 800 cars and 8,000 car lovers for its annual “A Celebration of Italian Style” at the Bayonet Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside. Some of the winners and classes were a 1960 GT Touring (Lancia), owned by Zachary Schulman North Salem, N.Y.; 1965 Rivolta (Iso & Bizzarrini), Buddy Pepp, Beverly Hills; 1974 Pantera L (DeTomaso), Dennis and Liz Valdez, San Jose; 1982 Countach P400 (Lamborghini), Chris Paphmichael, Louisiana; 1971 Ghibli SS (Maserati), Carl and Glenn Mellinger, Santa Monica; and a 1951 195 Inter (Ferrari), Charles Webb, Stratford, California. “We particularly want to congratulate Herb and Rose Wysard of Fullerton , California, whose 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport captured the Best of Show award,” says Concorso President Tom McDowell. “Concorso Italiano continues to be a force in the automotive collector and enthusiast world. We are proud to showcase more exotics and collectibles than any other event during Monterey’s Automobile Week.”

Four special classes included the “50th Anniversary of the Lamborghini Espada & Islero.” This was won for the 1969 Lamborghini Islero, Dr. Perry Mansfield, California, owner. “The Great Lancias” class award went to John and Suzanne Campion, Florida, for their 1981 Lancia Beta Monte Carlo Turbo. The “70 Years of the Iconic Porsche 356” class award returned home with Mike Malamut, California, for his 1951 Porsche 356 Pre A Split Window. And, “The Alois Ruf Reunion” class award was given to Bruce Meyer, California, for his 1988 RUF CTR Yellow Bird #001. A few miles away, the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca historic races at the annual Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion celebrated the racing heritage of Nissan and Datsun. The event also featured automotive world debuts, a tribute to the great Dan Gurney, two-time Formula One champion Mika Hakkinen demonstrating a 1995 McLaren GTR, a 50year anniversary celebration of Formula 5000 and the announcement of IMSA as next year’s featured marque on the eve of the sports car series’ 50th anniversary. “We are pleased with the great turnout from fans and participants alike,” says Brad Littlefield, public relations manager. "It was a fantastic meld of historic racing fans and newer ‘Z’ enthusiasts enjoying everything from cars in the Pre-War era to GTP prototypes from the 1990s.” Among the Special Awards was the Ken Miles Trophy, for the representation of a vintage car under 1500cc in Cy Yedor’s memory, to Randy Hill, 1956 Lotus Eleven; Henry Ford Trophy, the most significant Ford-powered entry, Joseph Diloreto, Ford-powered 1952 McLaren M6B, Group 5B; The John Fitch Corvette Excellence Award, to a significant Corvette driven in an exemplary manner, Jim Gallagher, 1967 Chevrolet Corvette, Group 6B; and The Phil Remington Award, remembering one of the great mechanics and fabricators, presented to the mechanic who demonstrates exceptional skill, Dave Klem, the Revs Institute; and The Spirit of Monterey, to the driver or entrant who excels in the Volume XV, Number 09

At Monterey Car Week’s culminating event, The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Sydorick said of his deep blue Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta: “It is a piece of automotive architecture mounted on a Grand Prix chassis that has technology that was top of the line for prewar cars. It’s a wonderful combination. It’s beautiful from top to bottom.” He rode home with two other awards for the classic Alfa: the Charles A. Chayne Trophy and the J. B. & Dorothy Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car. “This Alfa Romeo 8C 2.9 has all that one would wish for in a car: speed, style and, frankly, sex appeal,” says Concours Chairman Sandra Button. The event brought 209 cars from 17 countries and 31 states on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Other Best of Show nominees were a 1929 Duesenberg J Murphy Town Limousine from the Lehrman Collection, Palm Beach, Florida, and a 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Figoni Fastback Coupé, Robert Kudela, Chropyně, Czech Republic. This year, the Concours also raised $1.8 million for charity, Button explains. “Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these funds will benefit over 80 local charities, impacting the lives of more than 10,000 children annually in Monterey County.”
