Optimized performance The R8 V10 plus Coupe Competition package offers drivers reduced vehicle weight and increased downforce over previous models. Through the use of titanium backing plates for the carbon ceramic brake pads, 2.2 pounds has been saved. The same 20 inch fully milled wheels, similar in design to that of the R8 GT4, represent another example of Audi bringing motorsports technology to the road, and save another 26.4 pounds of weight. The full carbon fiber aero kit not only offers an aggressive look to the R8, but increases downforce. At 93.2 mph, the downforce is doubled compared to an R8 V10 plus Coupe to 114.6 pounds. Being prepared is not just authenticating square footage and lot size, checking the area comps, itemizing unique and green features and ensuring positive curb appeal and that all regular maintenance has continued.

sacrifice about five times that at closing if you don’t make the improvements before offering the home to luxury buyers. So, if you decide not to spend the $65,000 for a basic update on a luxury kitchen, expect to deduct at least $250,000 from your sales price. Buyers know the deal.

Astute preparation requires you to look at your home critically, especially the rooms that your prospective buyers will be inspecting most closely: the kitchen and the bathrooms. If these rooms appear tired, worn and out of date, they must be attended to or you will almost certainly sacrifice on your final sales price.

Here are some pointers: For one, if you and your real estate advisor agree that a basic upgrade needs to be done to a room or rooms, engage a licensed architect for his/her insights and a basic set of drawings and plans. The money spent for professional services can increase your realistically attainable closing price. A professional offers knowledge, experience, ideas and a network of vendors to complete the project correctly.

And today’s Valley luxury buyers, given the wide number of homes for sale in the $2-million-plus niche, expect a move-in home, not one in which they have to gut or significantly renovate. They’ll either move on to another opportunity or expect you to deeply cut your asking price.

Second: Make sure the kitchen and bathrooms look no older than five to seven years. Trends that were popular a decade ago have passed, and today’s savvy buyer is aware of what’s happening now. They’re on the Pinterest APP, Houze.com, read magazines and their friends have renovated recently or are contemplating it. As a seller, updates to these rooms

should occur at these intervals or almost certainly your home, however luxurious, will look timed out. Tuscan, Old World chandeliers, gingerbread of any kind, old-style granite countertops, Saltillo tiles, dark cabinetry and off-the-wall wall colors: These are red flags buyers will see waving prominently. They’ll most likely wave goodbye. Third: Renovate to a minimalist theme with the widest range of tastes accommodated. You’re not preparing the home for you; you’ve done that and are moving on. You want to appeal to the greatest number of able buyers who will either like how a room looks or will immediately start thinking about how to enhance it to their liking as it is –– without the expense and enervation of a tear-down. Buyers need to like rooms at first glance. If one annoys them, they’re probably not coming back. Often, the room makes the house, and that makes the sale. Fourth, resource your renovations in pubs and online sites, including retailers and inventories. In the publications, printed and online, you can see what appeals to you, even in the ads. Fifth: Liven up the room with removable contemporary accessories, flowers and pictures. These go when you leave; for now, they provide color, sparkle splash and pizazz. The potential new owners do the subtraction in their minds and add another piece they already have or will buy to replace the item in the space now. Even a few portrait shots of your family add appeal. You take them with you; the buyer takes away a good impression of the room and you. And, finally, trust your real estate pro. Yes, it’s your home but you’ve engaged a professional, a local expert with a global reach, to sell your home at the highest price in shortest time. Let him/her do the work you’ve requested, even if sometimes you’re offered opinions you don’t like. A good Realtor® offers a perspective you can’t have: objectivity. A seasoned Realtor should have by now seen hundreds of luxury homes; he or she must have sold them at or above asking price (you’ll want to look into their factual MLS stats). To avoid disappointment, do your diligence. If he/she says it’s time to call in an architect to redo the kitchen and master bath, paint, update the flooring or consider staging, that advice can be a good plan to get on today’s competitive market. Clubsport race car with 700 horsepower

Porsche has unveiled the new 935 race car on the occasion of “Rennsport Reunion VI” at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in California. Featuring a body reminiscent of the legendary Porsche 935/78, the 700-horsepower competition vehicle will be produced in a limited number of 77 units. “This spectacular car is a birthday present from Porsche Motorsport to fans all over the world,” says Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars for Porsche AG. “Because the car isn’t homologated for any series, engineers and designers didn’t have to follow the usual rules and thus had freedom in the development.” The race car’s technology is geared towards clubsport events and private training on racetracks. It is based on the street-legal 911 GT2 RS high-performance sports car. Like its historic predecessor, most of the body has been replaced or supplemented by carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)

parts. With its streamlined extended rear, the new Porsche 935 measures 191.5 inches in length. The width of the exclusive clubsport race car is 80.1 inches. The spectacular aerodynamics are a completely new development, and pay tribute to the Porsche 935/78 Le Mans race car, which fans dubbed “Moby Dick” due to its elongated shape, massive fairings, and white base color. The distinctive wheel arch air vents on the front fenders, which also are a feature of the Porsche 911 GT3 R customer racing vehicle, increase downforce at the front axle. Measuring 75.2 inches in width by 15.8 inches in depth, the rear wing promotes aerodynamic balance. Many exterior details are a salute to successful vehicles from the company’s motor racing history: The aerodynamically enhanced rims echo those of the 935/78, with the LED rear lights on the rear wing endplates adopted from the 919 Hybrid

Highline Autos LMP1 race car. The side mirrors come from the current Le Mans-winning 911 RSR, with the exposed titanium tailpipes modelled on those from the Porsche 908 from 1968. These historical references are also visible in the cockpit. The knob on the gearshift lever has a laminated wood design and is reminiscent of historic Porsche race cars such as the 917 and the 909 Bergspyder as well as the street-legal Carrera GT super sports car. The carbon fiber steering wheel and the color display behind it have been taken from the 2019 911 GT3 R. A massive safety cage combined with a racing bucket seat and a six-point safety harness help ensure maximum safety. A second seat for a passenger is available as an optional extra. Air conditioning keeps the interior cool. The new 935 is powered by a state-of-the-art 3.8-liter flatsix-twin-turbo engine, which is largely identical to the highperformance standard unit mounted in the road-legal 911 GT2 RS. Power is transferred to the 310 millimeter wide rear wheels via a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission with rigid mounts. Just as in production models such as the 911 GT2 RS and GT3 RS, the driver changes gears via conveniently positioned shift paddles located on the steering wheel. Typical of the 911, the weight distribution ensures excellent traction and braking perform-

ance. Six-piston aluminum monobloc racing calipers on the front axle, in combination with internally ventilated and grooved iron brake discs with a 15.35 inch diameter, provide excellent braking performance. The rear axle is fitted with four-piston calipers and 13.97 inch discs. Like the road-legal 911 GT2 RS, the 3,042 pound 935 is equipped with PSM (Porsche Stability Management) including traction control as well as an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Thanks to a so-called map switch, these assistance systems can be adjusted separately or switched off completely, depending upon the track situation. The new Porsche 935 can be ordered now from $804,156 plus country-specific VAT. In the U.S., this nonstreet-legal vehicle will be imported and sold by Porsche Motorsport North America of Carson, California. U.S. specific pricing will be announced at a later date. Customers will receive their vehicles from June 2019 at exclusive delivery events.

GreatGarages William E. Swigart, Jr. Automobile Museum is the Nation’s Oldest written by David M. Brown W. Emmert Swigart sold insurance by day and acquired classic cars by night and on weekends. Today, his legacy collection, the William E. Swigart, Jr. Automobile Museum, is the nation’s oldest, regularly showing between 30 and 35 of the 150 cars that remain from the originals acquired more than 80 years ago. These include five horse-drawn vehicles, from the earliest, an 1876 Fire Wagon, to a 1908 ambulance. The earliest motorcar is an 1899 Winton Roadster/ Runabout, and the collection has a number of marques that many might not be familiar with or may not have seen: 1902 Crestmobile; 1905 Mitchell Roadster/Runabout; 1910 Brush Roadster/Runabout; 1906 Firestone Columbus Roadster/ Runabout; 1907 Jewel Roadster/Runabout; 1908 Maxwell Roadster/Runabout; 1909 Mora Roadster/Runabout, one of two known to exist; 1909 Black Kiblinger High Wheeler Motor Surrey; a 1910 Marion Phaeton; and a 1913 Stanley Steamer Model 70. Among the holdings are one-of-a-kinds such as the 1936 Duesenberg 12-cylinder Gentlemen’s Speedster, first owned by actor Jackie Coogan. You can also see two Tuckers, the 1947 “Tin Goose” Prototype and #1013. One of the “Herbie the Love Bug” Volkswagens, used in the movies, is also here. Also included in the collection are automobilia, antique bicycles and toys, vintage clothing and other car-culture items. A 501(c)(3) non-profit, the museum is about halfway between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, 12031 William Penn Highway in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles south of the main campus of Penn State University. In 1920, with cars proliferating on American streets, Swigart began acquiring his collection. “Mr. Swigart saw that many early manufacturers had already disappeared from the large group that was producing cars, so he began collecting automobiles before they were lost in history or re-used for other reasons,” says Marjorie E. Cutright, the

museum’s executive director. He displayed his collection at his insurance business, and in 1935 he purchased and renovated a large colonial home in Huntingdon to continue the business and showcase the collection. In addition to automobiles, Swigart acquired what probably was the world’s largest automobile nameplate and license plate collections. “Nameplates are the beautiful nickel, silver, and porcelain emblems attached to the radiators in years gone by,” she explains. “For the license plates, we have 36 swinging panels mounted, so they open like pages of a book creating 72 sides on which are mounted the plates of the various states and several foreign countries.” Swigart’s home and office included woodwork and mantels salvaged from 18th-century buildings in Philadelphia which offered atmospheric backdrop for the plates and other automobilia. “William and his father would visit junk yards on a Saturday and pay the owner 50 cents a basket for nameplates. Then, one or two of his maintenance men would clean the items and mount them on boards which would be displayed for the public to enjoy,” she says. W. Emmert Swigart died in 1949: He had preserved twelve early automobiles and collected thousands of automobile-related items and literature.

Swigart, William E. Swigart, Jr. (1915–2000) shared his father’s joy for antique automobiles and the insurance business. After graduating from Huntingdon Area High School in 1933, he attended Wooster College in Ohio before returning to Huntingdon to complete his education at Juniata College. Following graduation in 1937, William joined Swigart Associates. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, returning to Huntingdon to continue his car collecting and other activities such as founding the Huntingdon County Community Chest (now United Way) and participating in the Boy Scouts of America. After W. Emmert Swigart’s death, he became corporate vice president and, later, president and CEO of Swigart Associates, the insurance company founded by his father. In a former carriage house behind the Swigart Associates building, he opened the first Swigart Memorial Motor Museum. The collection rapidly grew, and in 1957 he built the new Swigart Museum on Route 22, three miles east of Huntingdon. He continued to expand the museum’s holdings until his death in 2000, increasing the size of the collection to approximately 200 cars, while gaining fame as one of the country’s top automobile collectors. Throughout his life, he promoted the collection, care, and appreciation of automobile history, founding the Allegheny Mountain Region chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America in 1951 and helping to establish the Society of Automotive Historians. of America in 1956 and 1957 and a board director for 35 years. In 1997, he was named to the Kruse Collector Car Hall of Fame, and in 2004 the National Association of Automobile Museums awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to the automobile museum profession. Today, his wife, Patricia Swigart guides the museum as board director and an antique automobile enthusiast. The board coordinates programs, exhibits and other activities and events such as free educational tours of the museum for schools, scouts, nursing homes, adult daycare centers, developmental service organizations and nonambulatory persons.

American tennis and squash player at the beginning of the 20th century. “A tool box which some might have been found objectionable at the time was compartmented in the gas tank,” Cutright explains. •1920 Carroll Touring –– This is the only one left of the cars built by advertising executive Charles F. Carroll, founder of the Carroll Automobile Company in Loraine, Ohio. He produced 200 from 1920 to 1922, and this four-door was his personal car, purchased by William E. Swigart, Jr. from the Carroll family in 1967. Features include a nondetachable California-style top, with an opera window in the C-pillar, an aluminum body and disk wheels. Brass, nickel and chrome appear in the head lamps, bumpers and radiator. A unique feature of the Carroll Touring is that the radiator sits behind the front axle. The Carroll Six was also offered in a two-door roadster model. Two paint colors were available, Carroll Green, as in the museum’s car, and Carroll Red, each in two-tone finishes. Producing 66 horsepower, the car sold for $3,985, offering standards such as a leather interior. Recently, at The Elegance at Hershey, a judged event for the world’s finest collector vintage and antique cars in Pennsylvania, the 1920 Carroll won a 2nd Place Junior Judges Choice Award, as selected by Hagerty Youth Judging.

Cars of Yesterday, Today •1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile –– William E. Swigart Jr.’s favorite car and a fabulous American classic, the car new sold by the pound, so $650. In 1901, the basic concept was introduced by Ransom E. Olds, through his motor vehicle company in Lansing, Michigan, founded in 1896. Sadly, Oldsmobile disappeared from the GM lineup in 2004. This is one of 3,924 Curved Dash models built that year, the third year of production for the Curved Dash Model R. •1916 Scripps Booth –– This was originally built for Miss Eleonora Sears, sized as a Model T Ford with the grill of a Mercedes-Benz and at Rolls Royce quality. Handles and pulls are in solid ivory and all bright metal is German silver. A great-granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson and a friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, Sears (1881–1968) was a champion Volume XV, Number 10

in the spring of 1947 and a hand-built prototype for the Tucker ’48 production cars, only of which 50 were built. Incorporating many innovative design, technology and safety features not previously available in American production automobiles, the car was used for promotional purposes across America. When the company was building the Tin Goose workers didn’t have a mold to mold the sheet metal over, so they did it free hand and put it together, recalls John Tucker, Jr., the grandson of the legendary manufacturer, Preston Tucker. He notes that lead was used to fill in the gaps. “Henry Ford had an airplane called the ‘Tin Goose’ that I think was made the same way. So the guys building the car said, ‘We made it like the ‘Tin Goose’ was made,’” he explains.

•1960 Herbie the Love Bug –– There’s always room for Herbie. For the five popular Disney movies, TV series and Disney on Ice show, 70 Volkswagen Bugs were used, with about 20 surviving. Two are in the museum collection: this one, which appeared in the original movie and was the main car for the sequel, Herbie Rides Again, and the Disney on Ice Herbie. This is a two-door Model 117 with a sunroof, painted in Pearl White, with patriotic red, white and blue stripes. The #53 is the number for Los Angeles Dodger Hall of Fame Volume XV, Number 10

2017 Ford GT (Lot #S69) brought $1,320,000

Mecum Dallas Posts $30 Million in Sales Written by David M. Brown A 2017 Ford GT (Lot #S69) brought $1,320,000 and a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (S123) $440,000 to lead all cars at Mecum Dallas 2018, October 3–6. Total sales at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center reached $30 million from 839 collector cars hammered down –– a 73-percent sell-through rate and a 34 percent increase over the 2017 figure.

The second spot on the Top Ten was the Bloomington Goldcertified and NCRS Top Flight-winning Corvette, a Daytona Blue on Dark Blue classic with a matching numbers 327cid/360-horse Rochester fuel-injected engine and a Muncie M20 4-speed. Built June 18, 1963, the award-winner recently received a frame-off restoration. The rare ZO6 package includes heavy-duty suspension, larger diameter shocks and springs, a vacuum brake booster, dual master cylinder, power-assisted brake drums cooled by front air scoops and vented backing plates, sintered metallic drum brake linings and a 20-gallon fuel tank.

Four Ford GTs placed among the Top Ten for the Walworth, Wisconsin-based auction house. With just 626 miles, the Liquid Blue-on-black 2017, Serial No. 77, is equipped with the mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.5liter DOHC 24-valve Ecoboost V-6 engine. The aluminum block, with aluminum heads, produces 647 horsepower and 550 ft/lbs of torque and is capable of propelling the Ford GT to 216 MPH.

Two collections were completely sold. The Leaded Gas Collection totaled nearly $1 million, including a 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback (S23), $214,500. And, the Sickies Garage Collection, a dozen hot rods, sold for $348,150.

The supercar includes a twin-clutch 7-speed automatic gearbox, dry sump lubrication, four-wheel carbon ceramic disc brakes with silver calipers and active multi-mode suspension. The carbon fiber monocoque incorporates a steel roll cage and an aluminum substructure.

The remaining Top Ten at Mecum Dallas: 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster (S154.1), $277,750; 2006 Ford GT (W113), $258,500; 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (Lot S136), $220,000; 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (S139), $203,500; and a 2001 BMW Z8 Convertible (S114), $192,500.

The other three models were two 2006s (W113 and S107) and a 2005 (S104) which, respectively, attracted $258,500, $280,500 and $291,500.

Brown A 1928 Isotta Fraschini 8A Castagna Cabriolet was named Best of Show at the 22nd Ironstone Concours D’Elegance September 22 at Ironstone Vineyards, Murphys, California. Owned by the Stephens family, the classic tourer is from the family’s superlative collection at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Approximately 5,000 attended, making this the largest show in the event’s 22-year history. A total of 401 vehicles were shown and judged: 360 antique and classic cars and trucks, 16 vintage motorcycles, 16 elderly house trailers, exotic cars and nine period farm tractors. They were judged in 35 classes, including Antiques, Vintage Race Cars, America Cars 1962–1973, European Sports car through 1973 and individual marque classes. Also showcased were vintage race cars and tractors and Amphicars.

The owners of Ironstone Vineyards, farmers and vintners Gail and John Kautz began the event to help young people stay involved in agriculture for their careers. Proceeds support central and northern California youth programs, in particular, FAA, 4-H and the California State Fair Scholarship. Additional local organizations helped are Guide Dog and Service Dog programs, the Horse Classics and other scholarships. Since beginning, the event has raised $1-plus million for these programs.

More than 30 cars participated, with 70 guests, for the second Vintage Back Roads Tour through Calaveras County, stopping at New Melones Lake for lunch on a boat. Spectators also became “riding mechanicians” in nine 100-plus-year-old race cars, including a 1911 National that finished seventh at the Indy 500.
