One of the cars that stepped up to challenge Iacocca’s new model was the Chevrolet Camaro in 1967. BarrettJackson Scottsdale 48 has docketed a number of classic and late-model Chevrolet Camaros from every generation. “The Camaro was Chevrolet’s response to the Pony car war started by Ford’s Mustang,” Jackson explains. “In fact, Chevrolet cleverly referred to their new high-performance street machine as a ‘small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.’” An early example of that automotive menagerie is a 1967 Z/28 (#1067.1), one of 602 built in 1967 and powered by a date-code-correct 302-cid eight-cylinder, backed by a fourspeed manual. Original mileage is just 8,965. Also from the first few years is a 1969 COPO L72 427-cid/425-horse Camaro (#1289.1), which includes its NCRS Certificate and 2009 MCACN Concours Gold and 2010 American Camaro Association Bowtie Class Gold awards. A 1970 Daytona Yellow Z/28 ( #973) is powered by the formidable 350-cid LT1 V-8 engine with matching casting numbers and solid lifters and a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. And, a 1989 IROC-Z (#442.1), is a carefully preserved example of the Gen 3 Camaro, with just 344 miles. Still another “Z,” a Bright Rally Red 35th Anniversary 2002 convertible (#198.1), includes the SS Package with a 346cid/ 345-horsepower V-8 and has only 389 miles. Gen 5 and 6 are represented by a 2013 CRC COPO (#803), one of 20 versions designed to NHRA racing specifications, and a 2018 Camaro COPO (#1459), one of the 69 produced for that year, with an LSX-based 427-cid V-8 and an automatic transmission. “The Chevrolet Camaro is an iconic American muscle car,” says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Not only does it have a loyal base of performance enthusiasts, but it became a global icon when it became the face of ‘Bumblebee’ in the popular ‘Transformers’ film series. The car left the Rolls-Royce factory in England as a rolling chassis and was delivered to Rolls-Royce of America’s works in Springfield, Massachusetts, where it was fitted with a Huntington Limousine body by Brewster. Eighteen years later, the world had changed –– and with that the automotive world. One of the cars that effectuated this was the Corvette, which debuted in 1953 as an American answer to the popular European sportscars such as the MGs servicemen had seen in Europe during the Second World War. A first-year Corvette (#1353) is #290 of the hand-built 300 produced, the lowest annual production number for the model excepting 1983. The car was restored in the late 1990s by NASCAR great Mark Martin. One of the dozens of customs to be offered at BarrettJackson Scottsdale is a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette roadster (Lot #1327) built by Steve’s Auto Restorations of Portland, Oregon, which integrates multi-generational components, such as the C5 front suspension, C4 rear suspension and a C3 1967 Sting Ray “Stinger” big-block hood scoop. The powerplant is all now: a LSA 6.2-liter supercharged Cadillac 556-horsepower V-8 connecting with a T56 6-speed manual transmission. And, Lot #1398 is one of the 80 L88s built in 1968, powered by a rebuilt 427-cid/430-horse V-8 teamed with a M22 Rock Crusher four-speed. is included with the sale. One of the collections offered at the auction is from Bryan Frank, who is bringing approximately 50 vehicles from Scottsbluff, Nebraska. A 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible (#1018.5) is Colonial Cream over a yellow vinyl interior, with the 283-cid, 245-horsepower V-8 and dual four-barrel carburetors, called “quads” in its time. A great ’60s muscle car from the Frank collection is a 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 (#1305.1), with the 454-cid, 450horsepower legend. Still another great Resto-Mod is a black 1970 Chevelle (#1100), equipped with a 572-cid/620-horse Chevy big-block V-8 and a programmable TCI six-speed automatic transmission. If these twin ’70 Chevelles look great, take a look, too, at another two tire burners, “The Twinz,” from the next decade: two pristine 1987 Buick Grand Nationals (#1307 and #1307.1), one with fewer than 900 original miles and the other fewer than 600 miles. Sold as a pair, the GNs represent the pinnacle of American muscle car technology during the gas-stressed time, posting 13.9 quarters and 4.9 0–60 sprints with a V-6, a Garrett turbo and an intercooler. Family does help. Daughter Melissa Maggiore Meyer is a partner at Tomaso’s When in Rome. And her brother, Joey, manages The Maggiore Group, which owns the Tomaso’s restaurants, three Hash Kitchens, two in Scottsdale and one in Chandler, with another opening in Arcadia this year.

Or, the same day, he’s also at sister location Tomaso’s When in Rome, which opened two years ago in North Scottsdale, 23655 North Scottsdale Road, at Pinnacle Peak Road. At either restaurant, he’s working with as much passion as he did in the early 1970s when he opened his first Valley restaurant, Maggiore’s, on the west side. Preparing great food, offering fine Italian wines and making people comfortable: That’s his soul, his spirit, his night, his day.

In addition, inspired by cuisine from Maggiore’s native island, the company also owns Sicilian Butcher, which debuted in North Phoenix two years ago. Another opens in Chandler next month and a third in the West Valley later this year.

“Retire? No, I don’t think about that,” says Maggiore, a native of Palermo, Sicily. “This is what I love to do, and when I stop loving it, then I’ll walk away. But not now, not tomorrow.”

And, in Phoenix, the first Sicilian Baker Cannoli Bar & Market opens in January, featuring a build-your-own-cannoli bar, fresh pasta by the pound, sausage and imported cured meats and cheeses and a tavola calda (diner)-style counter with Sicilian pastries and desserts.

Maggiore is always adding items to his Tomaso’s menu, which includes favorite appetizers such as the Caprese Mozzarella Tasting Board, and entrées, for example, the Veal Roulade Saltimbocca and Veal Osso Buco over Risotto Milanese. He’s not set in a four-decade tradition, however successful that has been. “There’s no status quo here,” he says.

Specials are regularly offered. For us, Chef Maggiore prepared a Spinach Fettucine with English peas, fava beans, pancetta and parmigiana. With the food, Maggiore poured his luscious Luxus 5, an annual meritage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d’Avola, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah. With Giovanni Maggio, a fourth-generation winemaker in Sambuca di Sicilia, Agrigento, Maggiore owns 110 acres, which also produces annual varietals including Chardonnay and Cabernet.

Recently, for instance, he introduced a trio of appetizers: Lobster Bisque; Escargot, with garlic and herb butter and a brandy reduction and grilled bruschetta; and the Baked Clams Oreganata, with fresh herbs, roasted shallots and Italian extra virgin olive oil.

He finished off with a new cannoli, a sweet native to Sicily; it’s filled with cinnamon-infused mascarpone and dusted with powdered sugar.

Adding to his entrées, chef offers The Amazing Egg Yolk & Truffle Ravioli, a spinach pasta with house-made ricotta, egg yolk and truffle with roasted hazelnut butter and parmigiana. POST PHOTO COVERAGE photos by David Urbanic Well the cooler weather has certainly brought the cars and the spectators out in full force – or was it the feature of cars that do over 200MPH? In any case there was a hardly a spot to be had if you arrived late and even the two feature rows were absolutely full. There were an estimated 800 cars and a few thousand spectators. For the keen observer there was an ex-Formula 1 driver and an ex- Indy champion wandering about.

Where else can you go to see a spectacular 217 MPH LaFerrari next to an exceptionally rare 205MPH Maserati MC12, of which only 50 street versions were ever built. Even more rare on the other side was a 248MPH, yes that’s not a typo, Saleen S7 of which only 20 were made. As if this “trifecta” wasn’t enough a 211MPH Porsche 918 Spider sat next to a new yellow 216 MPH Ford GT whose owner kindly also brought his matching yellow 205MPH 2006 Ford GT.

With around 60 of the 200MPH+ cars we don’t have enough space to list them all but worth a special mention there was a unique Ferrari F12tdf in unpainted but clear-coated bare metal and a Bugatti Veyron. A half dozen of the 05-06 Ford GTs sat side by side while several models of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens, Porsches and Corvettes filled the feature rows.

A couple of automotive professionals who travel the car show scene on business commented that this is the best cars & coffee event in the country – high praise indeed!

The Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering is held all year through on the first Saturday of every month at the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center on the NW corner of Scottsdale Rd. & Mayo Blvd just one short block south of the 101. He added an expansive master suite on the south side and a 1,500-square-foot garage on the north in 2008, matching the sturdy CMU construction and design of the original. An Outdoors Celebrating the Desert Guided by a passion for gardening, the owner sensitively integrated manmade features with the rich desert site. Matching earth-tone pavers, for instance, lead to the garage and the front entry from the parking area. About a 100 feet out from all sides of the home, he has planted mature saguaro and other xeriscape flora and created metal wind sculptures that swirl with the changing wind currents from the foothills and mountains. The design is based on his experience of the famous 13th-century version at Chartres Cathedral near Paris, France. Barrio Queen to Open New Locations at Tempe Marketplace & Queen Creek Locale will be the popular restaurant’s fourth & fifth in the Valley

Hot spot restaurant Barrio Queen recently unveiled plans for a fourth location, opening at Tempe Marketplace (2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ 85281). Set to open in Summer 2019, the much-anticipated new location is currently under construction and will be built from the ground up, custom-designed by well-known architect, Mark Candelaria, AIA.

Barrio Queen is known for its authentic Mexican food, served in a trendy atmosphere, and this new location will feature the same irresistible menu favorites—along with a few new dishes (to be announced) created specifically for the location. The craveable food has drawn locals, visitors, movie stars and sports stars alike (and even Martha Stewart has come in to dine!) to its restaurants since 2011. The locale will serve lunch, happy hour and dinner, as well as offering catering options.

Located between Ruby Tuesday and Thirsty Lion Gastropub, the new location will encompass 5,700 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, and include an open kitchen. Unique features planned include a private glass atrium tequila room large enough for 30-plus people (and private tequila tastings), and a state-of-the-art patio.

The menu, coordinated by Creative Chef Julio Matta, is created from both the chef’s and staffs’ own family recipes, as well dishes owners Linda Nash and Steven Rosenfield found while exploring mom-and-pop cafes and restaurants in Mexico City, the Yucatan and other areas. In addition to its food, Barrio Queen is known for its unique drink menu, including an extensive list of tequilas and mezcals.

“We plan to augment the patio area and make the location look like a party,” says Candelaria, who designed the unique space for the young, vibrant group that frequents the center. Since then, the Lexus design team has been exploring the brand’s evolution and the latest result of those explorations will make its debut at the 2019 North American International Auto Show with the world premiere of the Lexus LC Convertible Concept. An open-air roadster that is an artful reflection of the LC coupe, the design goal of the Convertible Concept was the expression of “ultimate beauty”. From the rake of the windshield to the smooth contours of the rear decklid that houses the convertible top, every line on the LC Convertible concept was drawn to evoke an emotional response. Crisp white leather trim abounds while yellow accent stitching adds a pop of color without distracting from the subtle elegance of the overall design.
