The S 65 Final Edition comes exclusively in a high-gloss obsidian black metallic paint finish. Camelback Vintage Motor Show Debuts April 6 in Paradise Valley written by David M. Brown The inaugural Camelback Vintage Motor Show is Saturday, April 6, 8–11 a.m., at Camelback Bible Church, 3900 East Stanford Drive, just across the street from Phoenix Country Day School in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Travelers are More Tech-Savvy Then Ever, Plus OTA’s & The Sharing Economy Have Led to Increased Price Sensitivity. Can Self-Service Lend a Competitive Edge? The hospitality industry continues to be one of the most interesting in recent decades. 2018 was another record year. Occupancy levels, average daily rate (ADR), and revenue per available room (RevPAR) all increased year-over-year. Previous concerns over a possible decline in tourism to gateway cities proved to be generally unfounded. Yet, complications exist. The labor market is tight: unemployment is at a historically low rate, and wages are on the rise. The rise of Online Travel Agents (OTA’s) with tremendous aggregation power continues to drive customer price sensitivity, and the sharing economy (think Airbnb and VRBO) serve as significant disruptors over the last several years alone. There has never been more inventory on the market.
So… the first thing to focus on is making sure that wait doesn’t happen. Let them check in themselves with a selfservice kiosk. Start with your most valuable customers and make the first check-in moments streamlined. Perhaps make this visible to other customers to encourage loyalty. Second, think about all the moments after check-in where your hotel policies/procedures might serve as an inhibitor to your guest getting to what they want to do. Perhaps it’s too long waiting at the elevator. Perhaps it’s too complicated to order room service, or check-out, or get the internet password, or find the concierge. Whatever the issue, identify those friction points and start fixing them. (By the way, it doesn’t always have to be a technology solution. Slow elevators have been using a simple trick to keep user-complaints non-existent even with very bad performance: mirrors. Riders don’t complain when waiting as long if they can stare at their own reflection.)
According to data collected from the IBM Survey and Kiosk Marketplace Surveys, this is what your digital-first guest looks like today: Eighty-eight percent (88%) expect digital engagement. Sixty-One Percent (61%) are willing to use a completely automated experience. Seventy-eight percent (78%) say their experiences using an automated service was positive, and fifty-two percent (52%) indicated that they prefer self-service tech over human interaction.
The implications of this connected hotels paint an interesting future. A future where our patron can walk in, check-in, and be-in an environment of their preferences within minutes. So where do you start? Well, start with what matters most. Identify the moments that can drastically alter your guest’s perception of the experience. These moments might seem obvious, but a Cornell Hospitality Study has shown that you can have two IDENTICAL hotels, equally beautiful, pleasant, and comfortable, and one single thing can affect your customer’s satisfaction by up to forty-seven percent (47%): check-in time. The House Brasserie in Scottsdale Unveils Spring Menu written by David M. Brown Chef Brandon Jedd has revealed his spring menu at Scottsdale’s House Brasserie.

The elegant restaurant occupies a historic home in Old Town Scottsdale, 6936 East Main Street, adjacent to another city landmark, the Hotel Valley Ho. Founded in 2012 by chef/co-owner Matt Carter, the award-winning brasserie (an upscale bistro for the French) is in Scottsdale’s secondoldest house, built in 1939. The nearby Titus House, 1892, is the oldest.
Chef Jedd prepares New American-style cuisine with French and Asian influences, including Shared Plates, Sides and Main Dishes. Jedd, who started at The House as a line cook working for Chef Carter, prepares dinner, Monday through Saturday, 5–10 p.m. His spring menu debuts entrées and retains established dishes, which he has changed slightly from earlier versions, as he tries new ingredients.
This Oct. 15, Joseph ‘Joe’ Ieraci and wife, Julie, celebrate their first anniversary as the new owners of the property, formerly owned by Carter and business partner Terri Ellisor. The two own The Mission, in downtown Scottsdale and Kierland Commons, Zinc Bistro, also in that center. They recently opened Fat Ox, also in Scottsdale.
New, for example, are the Seared Main Scallops (they’re big, juicy U-10s), with pistachio, rosemary gastrique, pea purée, cauliflower and olive powder. And, for Shared Plates, the innovative Chicken Meatballs sit on a brown hazelnut butter risotto, with tomato, Parmesan and oregano crisps.
The Ieracis first dined at the 200-seat House Brasserie while visiting Scottsdale last February from their Agoura Hills home, north of Los Angeles. “It was love at first sight. We loved the ambiance, we had a fantastic dinner and we sensed an immediate connection with The House and its Volume XVI, Number 03

Born in North Hollywood, California, Ieraci attended ASU from 1986 to 1990, where he met Julie, an Olympia, Washington, native. They married in California in 1995. His parents were born in Calabria, “the toe of the boot” in Italy. They returned to the United States, eventually settling in Los Angeles.
Drinkmeisters Connor Barrett and Kenny Ennesser continue to dispense great covers of traditional cocktails as well as craft drinks such as the popular Green Lantern, made with Arizona distilling gin and green chartreuse, and the Smoked Manhattan, your dad’s drink but not as he drank it.
“My father Carmelo had me tossing pizzas, washing dishes and tables, mopping floors and making homemade pasta at the age of 10,” says Ieraci, recalling the family restaurants in Tarzana and Agoura Hills.
The wine list is small but smartly selected. For one, all wines are available by the glass, so you can try James Bond’s favorite, Dom Perignon, as a four-ounce taste for $55, and famous Opus One from California, $210.
Chef came to Scottsdale to expand his culinary experience. He stopped in at Carter’s The Mission, where he was pointed toward House Brasserie. “As soon as I arrived, I knew I wanted to be part of the growth here into a major restaurant area,” recalls Jedd, who was born in Hendersonville and raised in nearby Asheville, North Carolina.
Other varietals also appeal to varying budgets and tastes. Pinot Noirs, for example, are represented by a Willamette Valley Penner-Ash and Burgundies by a Louis Jadot “Clos Vougeot” from Beaune, the center for the noble French reds. Also recommended is the Sans Liege “Offering,” a welltextured red blend from Paso Robles, an AVA now producing so many sophisticated wines.
“We have welcomed guests for a wide variety of special occasions, wedding parties, anniversaries and corporate meetings,” Ieraci says. “The doors to our beautiful old house are always open to new friends –– for any occasion.”

Hot for hot rods: That’s Jerry Smith. His San Tan Auto Body and San Tan Hot Rods & Restorations on the west edge of Queen Creek, Arizona, offers body-off restorations to minor repairs on hot rods and classics and just about any vehicle you bring to him and his team. Smith, 74, has worked on cars for neighbor Ken Roberts, whose collection was recently featured as a Highline Autos GreatGarage. “We do body, mechanical and paint work,” he says. “No job is too small or too large.” The two-year-old restoration shop, on the southeast corner of Power Road and San Tan Boulevard by the San Tan Mountains, is themed as a 1950s Conoco Filling Station. “Hot rods are special as they keep the love of the American automobile alive, the sound, the look and the sport of it,” Smith says. “The ’50s were a great time for hot rods, and people today still enjoy the sights and sounds of the ’50s as seen in many movies made to depict that era, Grease [1978], for one.” Volume XVI, Number 03
He built and opened San Tan Auto Body in early 2009 on land he had purchased a few years earlier. But, a demand for a separate specialty shop for hot rods, classics and specialty vehicles was also strong from new and existing customers. “Since there is quite a different time schedule working on classics over daily collision repairs, we started planning the new shop to fill that need,” he explains. The adjacent hot rod shop opened in August 2017, and he’s been motoring along with it since. Hot rods, Resto-mods and customs are very popular now, as evidenced by their strong showing at the Phoenix-area January car auctions. Smith was born in Clarinda, Iowa, a town of about 5,500 people today, also the birthplace of Glenn Miller, the great band leader. He grew up in Denver, where he and his dad had a paint and body shop in nearby Evergreen. His dad moved to the Valley in the early ’70s for health reasons, and Jerry followed shortly after. “I grew up in the car business and am happy to say my two sons and granddaughter are following in my footsteps and running the body shop today,” he says.

Smith explains that owning and or restoring a classic car can be a hobby everyone in the family can enjoy and, in this way, help keep the art vital for the next generation. He notes that weekly car shows of various sizes nationwide underline the enjoyment they offer for families. “They bring people together that have like interests and new friends are made,” he says. “Not only are the finished projects fun, they are also a work of art.” Smith’s friend, client, and hot rod collector, DJ Heimeyer, 59, lives a mile from the shop, “I go see him every morning for coffee, and we have a Friday night get-together,” Heimeyer says. He’s been associated with cars since he was 12, when his dad connected him with the business in native Willamina, a small town of approximately 2,000 people about 55 miles from Portland, Oregon. He started driving hot rods to school when he was 14 – muscle such as Camaros, Chevelles and Cudas. “I always had a hotrod.” For him, as with Smith, hot rods will always be special: “the rumble, the speed, the looks and the memories of the goodole days.” His favorite rodder movie: Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), with the ’55 Chevy driven by James Taylor. The two men recently showed off some of their rides to Highline Autos magazine. The first four cars are from Smith’s, followed by three from Heimeyer’s collection. •1956 Ford F100 –– Smith’s donor vehicle for the power plant was a 1997 Lincoln Mark 8 with a 4.6-liter, dual-overhead-cam, fuel-injected Ford engine connected to a fivespeed automatic. The build includes a custom tubular frame, independent 8.8-inch positraction rear end, billet specialty wheels, low-profile tires, air-conditioning and custom paint color. The truck is in process, as the interior is incomplete. This was a friend’s, and Smith first painted it in 1965 for him. A few years ago, he bought the truck and began restoration and modification. “I wanted to have a Ford vehicle with a Ford engine in it since most Ford hot rods and such are powered by Chevy,” he says. •1968 Chevy Camaro –– This second-year pony classic belongs to a longtime friend, Dick Bergamo. It is powered by a 427-cid, 400-horse engine with a Ford nine-inch rear axle. “This car was and still is a very popular in-demand year and model. Everyone who sees it loves it,” he says. “Of course it is bright red!”

•1972 Chevy C-10 –– The short wide-bed pickup is powered by a 327-cid, 400-horsepower Chevy engine with a Muncie four-speed, 12-bolt posi-track rear axle, custom interior and paint, four-wheel disc brakes, air-conditioning and Boyd wheels. “I chose this to restore because it’s always been a favorite model of mine,” says Smith, noting he found one locally and began a six-month complete restoration. “It seems to be a favorite of several who see it also.” •1931 Ford 5-Window Coupe –– “This is a purple all-steelbody open-wheel hot rod with a rumble seat, which was very popular in the ’50s and ’60s,” Smith says. It is Chevy powered with a tunnel ram and two four-barrel Holley’s owned by customer Terry Hanna. The car came to Smith’s shop originally for some minor repairs. •1969 Camaro SS –– The car still features the original Cortez Silvery paint with a black Landau top and red interior. Born with a 396 powerplant, it now has a 427, both Chevy. “I’ve only driven it 150 miles in the eight years since restoring it,” Heimeyer says. •1969 Plymouth Roadrunner –– “A real ‘Wow,’” he says. The “Beep-Beep” muscle car is colored “Vitamin C Orange” with a black interior. The numbers-matching Mopar still has the original 383 V-8 and four-speed in place. “Every nut and bolt has been redone,” he notes. “The underneath of the car looks just as beautiful as the top. A show-winner and flawless.” •1972 Chevrolet El Camino –– Heimeyer got this car from a friend who purchased it from a lady whose husband had died. The six-year restoration began from the ground up and included paint, chrome and a leather interior. The original gauge cluster and tach are also in place. SCUDERIA SOUTHWEST FEBRUARY SCOTTSDALE MOTORSPORTS GATHERING
POST PHOTO COVERAGE story by Peter Volny Since the Phoenix Open Golf is held at the same time, and they carry on about greens, the guys at Scuderia Southwest decided to go red this month. Of course, their wheels only do about 5MPH and only have a one speed gearbox.
Despite the golf tournament and a cool, cloudy day with the threat of rain, it was another record turnout. The European, domestic and Asian sections were all full and there was also a healthy turnout of motorbikes. Of course, there was no shortage of spectators admiring the machinery either.
Proof of the magnitude of Arizona in the high-performance and collector car world was evident in two of the new McLaren Sennas sitting side-by-side in a large display of other McLaren models. Since only 500 Sennas are manufactured for the whole world, to have not one but two here, shows how disproportionately important this area really is. As if those two weren’t proof enough one of the rarest cars in the whole world was on display – the one and only Cobra III Lonestar. Shelby’s 289 Cobra was the Mark I, the 427 was the Mark II and this prototype was designated the Mark III but before Shelby could go into production Ford assigned the GT40 LeMans campaign to Shelby. Without the resources to do both the Cobra III went on the back burner and never went into production. A sleek, futuristic for the time, mid-engine design, the car still looks racy today. An estimated 700+ cars were on display admired by crowds of several thousand and even the rain held off.
The Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering is held all year through on the first Saturday of every month at the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center on the NW corner of Scottsdale Rd. & Mayo Blvd just one short block south of the 101. CONCOURS IN THE HILLS RAISES MORE THAN $155,000 FOR PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Concours in the Hills, Scuderia Southwest’s largest high performance, exotic and collector car event of the year, raised more than $155,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital during its Saturday, Feb. 9 show. The event celebrated its sixth year by shattering donation, attendance, vehicle and sponsorship records while over half way on its way to achieving the pledged amount of $500,000.
Scuderia Southwest and members of the public brought 941 vehicles to Fountain Hills’ Fountain Park for an idyllic day of charitable fundraising and horsepower. Many of the cars are worth millions of dollars each. The event, free to attend, required a minimum $60 donation to Phoenix Children’s to register a vehicle, though many donated more.
“Concours in the Hills, held in a spectacular setting, is an incredible community event. Great cars, helicopters, sponsors and thousands of people...it just keeps getting bigger and bigger each year.” said Steve Schnall, senior vice president and chief development officer of Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Scuderia Southwest’s continued commitment to the health, hope and healing at Phoenix Children’s speaks immensely about its priorities. We are extremely grateful for our relationship with them.”
Concours in the Hills packed Fountain Park with vehicles of all kinds, from classic American muscle to historic European sports cars, and everything in between – including very rare cars: the only Lonestar Cobra ever built by Shelby, a D-type and an XK-SS Jaguar. Five helicopters were on display including two US Marine Corps attack helicopters that flew in from San Diego especially for the show. There was a display of 21 race cars including an Indy car driven by Mario Andretti. The show was opened by race drivers and valley residents Lyn St. James, Arie Luyendyk, Didier Theys and Harley Cluxton and ex-batchelor Arie Luyendyk Jr.
2019’s Concours in the Hills attendance exceeded 20,000 spectators. Scuderia Southwest garnered 108 sponsors for this year’s event. “I’d like to thank the car owners, the sponsors, the volunteers, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the Town of Fountain Hills, the USMC and all the helicopter pilots, all of whom worked very hard to create another successful event,” said Peter Volny, marketing and media director at Scuderia Southwest. “We are a bunch of car lovers and are proud to showcase just how much we have here in Arizona. When it comes to car culture we are in the driver’s seat. Each year we see new opportunities.”

Among these scheduled for Palm Beach is a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Coupe (Lot #734), which retains Corvette’s original classic design while significantly exceeding factory production standards. Powered by a GM Performance LT1 direct-injected engine, it produces 460 horsepower and 465 ft/lbs of torque.
Representing the diversity of cars offered are a ground-uprestored 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III Convertible (#705); a restored 1959 Volkswagen 23-Window Microbus (#729); a fully restored matching-numbers 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 (#737) featuring all-original sheet metal and inboard headlights; and a contemporary supercar, a 2012 Lexus LFA (#742), capable of 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
Also on the 500-plus-car docket is a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Custom Hardtop (#731), which won the Magnificent 7, First-in-Class and Outstanding Custom awards during the 2017 Houston Autorama. This Tri-5 build required more than three years of labor and extensive parts.

“While we continue to see growth in the demand for modern collectibles, key sales from this year’s auction proved the desire for top-of-category classic and prewar examples,” says David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Company, Santa Monica.
Gooding & Company realized $22,047,980 at the company’s 10th annual Amelia Island Auction, with a 1930 Packard 734 Speedster Runabout bringing $1,765,000. And, Scottsdale-based Russo and Steele Automobile Auctions made its first appearance for the event at the city of Fernandina Municipal Airport.
At the Ritz-Carlton, RM Sotheby’s sold 84 percent of all its lots, including a spectacular 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra (#264) with less than 1,900 original miles, which, at $1,792,500 became the most valuable non-competition spec 427 Cobra ever sold at auction.
The weekend culminated in the 24th Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance at The Golf Club of Amelia Island Sunday.
Pre-war classics had strong representation at the auction as well with a 1930 Duesenberg Model J ‘Sweep Panel’ DualCowl Phaeton (#230) selling for $1,650,000, a 1934 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Convertible Sedan (#240) achieving $1,325,000, and a 1926 Hispano-Suiza H6B Cabriolet Le Dandy (#252) bringing in a strong $1,353,500. Subsequent to the sale, a 2010 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 ‘Sang Noir’ (#149) sold for $1,500,000.
Held at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club, Bonhams totaled $16-million in sales, with an 84-percent sell-through. Also from the Boulton Collection, a 1904 Peerless Type 8 Roi des Belges saw a winning bid of $698,000, and $456,000 brought the famous 1908 Welch 4-L 7-Passenger Tourer to a new home. The 1968 GP-winning Brabham-Cosworth BT26 once driven by the great Jacky Ickx, achieved $1.105-million, and a 1930 Cadillac 452 V-16 Roadster, with Fleetwood coachwork, $1,187,500.
And, from the Youngtimer Collection, a 1994 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo Targa (#106), with fewer than 11,200 miles from new, brought $173,600.
“The sale shows the enduring appeal of some collector car genres which rarely appear on the market, such as the brass era and major single-seat racing cars,” says Rupert Banner, Motoring group director and auctioneer for Bonhams, with U.S. headquarters in San Francisco.
“Exceptional classics and emerging collectibles are drawing sustained and new interest to the market,” says Gord Duff, the global head of Auctions for the Ontario, Canada-based company. “The next generation of collectors, whose tastes are exemplified by the cars of the Youngtimer Collection, not only expands the collector car auction market but the hobby at large.”
