Mecum Auctions Phoenix 1,000 Vehicles March 14-16 at State Farm Stadium

Auctions aren’t just auctions anymore. Today, thanks in part to Dana Mecum and the Mecum Auctions successful sales formula, the auction platform has evolved into a lifestyle event for car collectors and enthusiasts of every segment. Whether buying, selling or spectating, the excitement that comes with each drop of the gavel is something that can’t be replicated or reproduced in any traditional transaction format, and it’s a thrill that keeps people coming back for more, usually with friends in tow. This popularity and word-of-mouth phenomenon has served to help Mecum expand its reach around the country, with auctions now held in a dozen different states at an average of more than one auction each month, each of which presents anywhere from 600 to more than 3,000 collector cars. Most recently, the auction house announced that it would be bringing the Mecum Experience to the Phoenix area with an auction slated for March 14-16 at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. And an experience is just what these auctions provide, an unquestionably entertaining one at that. Volume XVI, Number 02

The idea of auctions as entertainment isn’t new, but it’s an idea that really gained steam in Mecum’s first years as a nationally broadcast television program, which was now more than a decade ago. Today, with auction coverage televised on NBC Sports Network, the entertainment aspect of the business is as much of a draw as the auction itself. Attendees often describe the auctions as “the best car show ever,” but with the bonus of every single piece of eye candy on-site being available for purchase. Even the auctions’ inclusion on the sports-exclusive NBC channel reveal its status as a true sporting event complete with the kind of competition that can grab the rapt attention of large audiences. Instead of merely admiring rows and rows of beautiful cars, attendees at a Mecum auction have the ability to buy one and make a dream come true, but only if they can win the bid. On average, 30 vehicles cross the auction block in search of new owners each and every hour. Though the auction itself is certainly the main attraction at every Mecum event, it is by no means the only source of entertainment provided. Every Mecum auction features a plethora of additional things to do and see. The Mecum Midway, as it’s been dubbed, features myriad exhibitors offering goods and services from custom garage cabinetry to fine jewelry. There are always food and drink options, and sponsor booths often feature giveaways or interactive displays, such as Dodge’s celebrated “Thrill Ride,” which takes passengers through an adrenaline-pumping race-course setup that allows Dodge’s Demon and Charger to accelerate hard and drift around corners leaving skid marks on the pavement and shredding countless tires in the process. For others still, a collector-car auction is simply an ideal event at which to connect with loved ones through the memories recalled, the nostalgia induced or just the shared love of beautiful and historic automobiles. family owned with Dana Mecum, his wife and all four sons filling active roles in the business. Three Ferraris at Gooding & Company, all exceeding $5 million, topped sales during Arizona Car Week 2019, and Barrett-Jackson sold 1,800-plus vehicles, calling this the largest public No Reserve collector car auction ever. Bonhams posted a 90-percent sell-through with $16.1 million in sales, led by the sole-surviving 1952 Maserati A6G 2000 Frua Spider, $2,755,000 million, a world auction record for the model, the company says. An HVA Preservation Award-winning 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster realized $990,000 at Worldwide Auctioneers, and a low-mileage 1995 Ferrari 288 GTO (Lot #149) sold for $3,360,000 during RM Sotheby’s two-day sale at the landmark Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. As always, charity cars were central to the BarrettJackson docket. The first production 2020 Toyota GR Supra, “Global #1,” was auctioned for $2.1 million, with proceeds supporting the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF). The revived model debuted January 14 at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Ford donated two vehicles, the first 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition and the first 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 (which was purchased by longtime Shelby fan, Craig Jackson), selling for a combined $3.6 million to benefit United Way for Southeastern Michigan and JDRF, the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research. “Ford Motor Company has always championed and supported organizations that seek to improve the lives of people and communities who are at risk,” says Edsel B. Ford II. “We’re proud to have helped continue this tradition at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale. Working with JDRF and United Way of Southeastern Michigan we helped raise much needed funds and awareness for these two wonderful organizations.” At the 8th-annual Bonhams, two Italian spiders by the great Carrozzeria Frua were headliners, the 1952 Maserati A6G 2000 and a 1946 FIAT 1100, Piero Frua‘s very first car, which brought $577,000. Returning to the Westin-Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, the event totaled $16.1-plus million with a strong sellthrough rate of 90 percent. Volume XVI, Number 02

“Our sale was well supported and featured a large number of cars without reserve, creating multiple bidders throughout and a very respectable rate of sale,” says co-auctioneer Rupert Banner for the London-based company, with U.S. offices in California and New York. “It’s a discerning market at the moment, and while we weren’t able to conclude sales on a couple of the bigger cars, we sold nearly all the cars on offer and achieved some impressive results and auction records along the way.” For Gooding & Company, at Scottsdale Fashion Square, 105 of 124 lots were sold, an 85-percent rate, posting $48.2 million. The three Arizona Car Week-leading Ferraris were a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta (#121), $7,595,000; 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta (#28), $5,890,000; and a 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Spider Series II (#42), a world-record $5,395,000. A 1952 Ferrari 212 Europa Cabriolet (#129) brought $1,930,000. Ferraris were center stage here as well. A Classichecertified 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS by Pininfarina attracted $2,012,500 –– the second-highest sale of the auction. A one-off 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona NART Spider, designed by Michelotti, brought $670,500, and a 280-mile 2017 Ferrari F12tdf $1,006,000. In addition, a one-of-50 2012 Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package sold for $885,000, and a pair of 1993 Vector Avtech WX-3 Prototypes, the first all-American supercar, auctioned at $615,500 (the original coupe), and the WX-3R Roadster version $500,000. And, a freshly restored 1948 Tucker 48, sold for $1,600,000. Three single-owner private collections were the Torque Collection, including Porsche 911 models and a rare, fully restored 1951 Spartan Royal Mansion trailer, which sold for $351,500, exceeding the estimate. The Calumet Collection comprised British luxury automobiles from 1923 to 2012. A coachbuilt 1987 Rolls-Royce Carmargue Retractable Hardtop with 987 actual miles brought $252,000 and a 2000 Bentley Continental SC, $246,400. And, the Richard L. Burdick Collection included a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton by Fleetwood, one of just 18 survivors, which found a new owner for $940,000. “While we certainly witnessed a continued shift in Volume XVI, Number 02

collecting interests, we saw strong prices achieved for freshto-market motor cars from several segments of the market, most notably for great American Classics and for late-model collectibles,” says Gord Duff, global head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s, calling this the best Arizona bidder turnout in more than five years. Worldwide Auctioneers Scottsdale Auction generated sales approaching $10 million, with an excellent sell-through rate of 80 percent. The Auburn, Indiana-based company’s 2019 schedule also includes The Pacific Grove Auction on the Monterey Peninsula during Car Week on August 15th and the 12th-annual Auburn Auction in Indiana on August 31. The company also schedules stand-alone sales of significant private collections. Three 1930s classics also led the Scottsdale sales. A 1935 Auburn 851 SC Boattail Speedster from the Tom Gaughen Collection brought $687,500 and another 1935 Auburn 851 SC Boattail Speedster from this collection, $632,500, and a rare 1936 Duesenberg Model JN LWB Tourster, the last car of the JN series, $605,000. The bidding closed at $30,000, and that bidder redonated the cart for a second purchase, which raised $28,000 more for the family. The Supra is Back!

Sports car enthusiasts have been waiting more than 20 years for the return of Supra and will soon be able to purchase the 2020 Toyota GR Supra for a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $49,990. For those fans and collectors anxious to be among the first owners of this iconic sports car, the initial 1,500 production Supras for the U.S. will be Launch Edition models starting at $55,250. Each will be uniquely numbered and have distinctive features signifying the exclusivity and excitement of Supra’s return. Toyota dealers will be handling all orders and the Launch Edition models go on sale in Summer 2019 starting at $55,250. The Supra Launch Edition will be available in exterior colors of Absolute Zero White, Nocturnal Black or Renaissance Red 2.0, each featuring high-contrast red mirror caps and 19-inch forged matte black alloy wheels. Launch Editions will have a red interior. Each of the racinginspired seats will be wrapped in red leather, with red leather steering wheel grips, and a red center console with carbonfiber accents. The Renaissance Red 2.0 Supra Launch Edition will feature a black leather-trimmed interior, with black seats, a black steering wheel, and black center console. The black interior will also feature carbon-fiber accents. The first 1,500 Supras will feature an individually numbered carbon-fiber badge on the passenger-side dashboard complete with a graphic of Toyota Motor Corporation President and Master Driver Akio Toyoda’s signature.

Different Grades, Same Power The 2020 Supra will be available in two grades: 3.0 and 3.0 Premium. Both will be powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged

Highline Autos inline six-cylinder engine that produces 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with racing-style paddle shifters. Both grades will also come standard with serious performance features including adaptive suspension, an active rear differential and launch control. The 3.0 grade has a 6.5-inch display with Bluetooth and iPod capability, as well as Alcantara seats. Navigation and JBL Audio will be an available option for an additional $2,460. The 3.0 Premium grade will feature an upgraded 8.8-inch wide-format touchscreen display with Navigation, Supra Connect telematics services, wireless Apple CarPlay, a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system, wireless phone charging and a color Head-Up Display. The 3.0 Premium grade will also feature heated, leather-trimmed seats. The Supra Launch Edition will be based on the 3.0 Premium grade. Standard safety features on both grades, as well as the Launch Edition, include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, road sign assist and automatic high beams.

The Driver Assist Package is an additional suite of safety features that will be optional on both grades for an additional $1,195. It includes full speed adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, parking sonar and rear collision warning. The First Production 2020 Toyota GR Supra Sold for $2.1 Million at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. This one-of-a-kind Supra was the very first new Supra available in the U.S. in more than 20 years. It features a Phantom Matte Gray exterior with the red mirror caps, red leather-trimmed interior, matte black wheels, and carries VIN number 20201. The carbon-fiber badge on the passenger dash is numbered 1 of 1,500 with a graphic of Akio Toyodaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signature. The top bidder also received an engine cover with Akio Toyodaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s personal signature that can be framed or installed on the car. The two-evening Russo and Steele auction, Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, will feature 300-plus collector automobiles, including European sports cars and American muscle cars, in its signature “Auction in the Round” at the city of Fernandina Municipal Airport, 3995 Amelia Island Parkway in Fernandina Beach. “America: the only place where miracles not only happen, but where they happen all the time.” –Thomas Wolfe Remember Grove’s Tasteless Chill Tonic? Not tasteless financially, Mr. Grove’s drink outsold CocaCola in the late 1880s, so you won’t remember unless you drank decades of the hotly demanded tonic. The Antique Car Museum in Asheville, North Carolina, does recall. One of its 23 classic vintage vehicles is a twohorse surrey (circa 1900) by Henry Hooker & Co., New Haven, Connecticut. The pre-car belonged to Edwin Wiley Grove, who made his way in the pharmaceutical business hawking the Coke-beating elixir. Grove’s surrey is one of the four horse-drawn examples at the museum, 111 Grovewood Road in pine tree-rich Grovewood Village, next to The Omni Grove Park Inn, originally owned by ubiquitous Mr. Grove. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1923 building once housed the weaving shop of Biltmore Industries, backed by Gilded Age matron Edith Vanderbilt. Here, 40 looms produced bolts of fine handwoven wool worn by U.S. presidents, first ladies and other well-fabricked Americans. The museum opened June 20, 1966, featuring the earliest car, a 1913 Ford Model T with a hand crank, and the most recent, a 1959 Edsel Corsair, which made potential buyers cranky. The collection had been started years earlier by Asheville native and legend, Harry D. Blomberg. Born in 1904 to an immigrant Jewish family from Lithuania, he grew up in an Asheville neighborhood of family homes and boarding houses. His story has something of Wolfe’s miracles in America about it. “Much to his father’s chagrin, Harry was captivated by automobiles from an early age and had no interest in going into the family business. He was a high school drop-out, and his father famously told him, ‘You will never amount to anything; you have wheels in your head,’” says Ashley Van Matre, marketing manager for Grovewood Village. His Asheville High School principal, Andy Hutchins, agreed that cars were not a heady concern. “You ought to get a job and go to work.” Get a Job! He did: In 1923, he started working in the automobile business when he was 19, opening one of the city’s first filling stations, now the Blomberg Annex to the Asheville Community Theater. Already expanding his business interests three years later, he leased a lot on the back side of a boarding house, “Old Kentucky Home,” owned by Julia Wolfe, mother of great author Thomas Wolfe, whose most famous novel, Look Homeward Angel, is set here. Wolfe renamed this childhood home “Dixieland” and incorporated the experiences in his work.

The business begun by Blomberg on the empty lot behind the boarding house became Harry’s Motor Inn, the first of three he opened in Asheville. “He correctly gauged the future and the needs of automobile owners. He knew they would need fuel and service, and in those days, most cars were open-air models with ragtop roofs, so they needed somewhere to be housed during bad weather,” Van Matre explains. “Harry’s Motor Inn offered all of those things in one place.” In 1937, he opened the Western North Carolina dealership for Cadillac-LaSalle, later adding marques including Pontiac. “Celebrities such as Bob Hope and President Franklin Roosevelt rode in Harry’s cars when they came to town,” she says, noting that he acquired most of the collection through the dealership. In 1953, he purchased Biltmore Industries and was able to maintain the weaving business until 1981, producing Biltmore Homespun. This also allowed him to use some of the space for the cars. His mechanics, technicians, and artisans restored each vehicle as closely as possible to original condition. The museum, opened June 20, 1966, can now be visited April through December as part of Grovewood Village. A community supporter, Blomberg was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Masons and the Shriners and also served on the board of directors of St. Joseph Hospital. He even saved Old Kentucky Home from demolition in 1941, then sold it back to the Wolfe family three months later because he believed it rightfully was theirs. Today, it is a memorial for the great writer and was dedicated a National Historic Landmark on May 5, 1973. Blomberg died in 1991. His dealership, moved in 1967 and now known as Harry’s on the Hill, is run by his granddaughter Pat Grimes. Industries, opening Grovewood Gallery and working artist studios. Today the complex is known as Grovewood Village. In addition to the cars, the building housing them is very special. “The museum offers a peek into an important part of Asheville’s past,” Van Matre explains. “It’s such a unique space, very rustic, and there’s no air-conditioning, but it’s chockfull of character.” Among the details are custom-made Roycroft chandeliers (circa 1918) designed by Karl Kipp, the noted Arts and Crafts metalworker. Here, too, others have found enlightenment, Van Matre explains: “Visitors just love that the building bears marks of the mountain artisans who worked here long ago, such as thought-provoking quotes inscribed on the overhead beams and chandeliers, which were chosen to act as words of wisdom for Biltmore Industries’ employees.” Harry’s Cars •1922 American La France Fire Truck –– Custom-built in Elmira, New York, and delivered to Asheville on November 3, 1922, this truck served the city for more than 40 years and was then sold to Blomberg’s dealership where it was restored. The Type 75 chain-drive fire truck has a six-cylinder gasoline engine and delivers 750 gallons of water per minute through a positive-displacement, bronze rotary gear pump, explains Tom Anders, the museum manager. And, it has a chemical hose tank. The radiator and carbide headlamp is German silver, the ladders are made of seasoned ash and the leather-covered seat is horse hair filled. •1927 REO Flying Cloud –– REO are the initials of Ransom Eli Olds, who pioneered the use of a stationary assembly line in the automotive industry. He founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in 1897 (later Oldsmobile and a General Motors division) and the REO Motor Car Company in 1905.

This one belonged to a local deputy sheriff. It has a solid cowhide interior and a round brass hole in the windshield, used as a firing port or to mount a spotlight. The driver’s door has cartridge loops sewn into it for bullets. “If this car could talk, I’m sure it would describe tales of gun battles and moonshine busts, which were common in these parts,” Anders says. He notes that the rock band, REO Speedwagon, took its name from Ransom Eli Olds’ Speed Wagon, a predecessor of the pickup truck. •1927 La Salle Phaeton –– In 1965, this car, featuring a 303-cubic-inch V-8, was found sealed behind a wall in the basement of a condemned hotel in downtown Asheville. “The original owner had passed away years before, and no one knew the car was there, not even the man’s son,” Anders explains. “The car had to have new seat covers, a new top and tires. Everything else about the car is original.” These cars weren’t just lookers, Anders notes. On June 20, 1927, one driven by Willard Rader at Milford Proving Grounds averaged 95.2 mph for 952 miles –– just 2 mph under the pace the Indianapolis 500-winning Duesenberg posted that year at half the distance. •1940 Buick Century Touring Sedan –– powered by a 320cubic-inch straight-eight, the four-door was bought by a customer who died before it had 100 miles. “His widow could not bear to part with it, so it sat in the garage covered with quilts for 22 years,” Anders explains. “When she passed away, her estate was settled, and the car was sold.” Volume XVI, Number 02

•1950 MG TD 2-door Roadster –– Blomberg was an MG dealer briefly, so that’s probably how the museum has this car, Anders guesses. Painted in British Racing Green, it features a four-speed manual transmission and right-hand steering for British driving. The car has no fuel gauge, which was not a popular feature with owners at the time, he explains. Instead, a green light on the fascia flashed when the fuel level approached three gallons. •1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham –– “The prized car of our collection,” Anders says. Only 400 Eldos were made this year; the hand-built “boat” has a brushed stainless steel top and suicide doors. This car is #149 and was sold new by Harry’s Cadillac. Standard were memory power seats and Air Ride Suspension, which are features that were not seen on other vehicles for another 30 years, he says. The color is Lake Placid Blue. “When Frank Sinatra bought one in the same color, this became known as ‘Sinatra Blue,’” he explains. “Harry was one of the few dealers who was able to get a car so rare because not only was he a Cadillac dealer, he was also a distributor for GM,” Anders says. “The customer who bought it kept having problems with the air suspension, so Harry eventually offered to buy it back from him.” *** For additional photos and the complete GreatGarages library see Highline-Autos.com. Lexus LC500

Lexus LC500 and LS500 written by David M. Brown Visitors to the recent 2019 Chicago Auto Show enjoyed the second iteration of the Lexus LC 500 Inspiration Series, a limited edition of the luxury carmaker’s flagship coupe. With 100 cars offered, starting in April, the Inspiration features Flare Yellow paint, 21-inch wheels and tires, carbon fiber roof, numbered lower grille inserts and a leather interior with model-defining yellow stitching. The car carries the same 5.0-liter normally aspirated DOHC 32-valve V-8 of the LC500 series. The 471-horsepower/398 lb/fttorque engine, through a slick 10-speed automatic transmission, delivers 0-to-60 mph runs of just 4.4 seconds, underlining its competitiveness in the luxury sports car niche. The MSRP is $106,210. This highest-level Lexus series also includes the LS500 and the LC500h Hybrid models. All three versions are rear wheel driven on the company’s GA-L platform, with the engine mounted front mid ship, providing excellent weight balance. The LS500 is equipped with a strong, responsive 3.5-liter, twin turbo DOHC 24-valve V-6, also paired with the 10-speed automatic on the LC. The injection systems and valvetrains are similar for the LS and the LC, but the latter incorporates a few turbo-charging edits such as a more compact actuator to adjust the intake valves, explains Ed Hellwig, with Lexus Product Communications. The LS500 sedan is not quite as quick as the two-door LC, but you’ll still handle most of life’s road challenges very capably with its 4.7-second 0–60 times. Volume XVI, Number 02

For drivers wanting luxury, performance and economy, the 354-horsepower LC500h carries the 3.5-liter, 24-valve Atkinson-cycle V-6 coupled with dual electric motors and a lightweight lithium-ion battery. The Hybrid sprints from start to 60 in 4.7 seconds. “Both the LC and the LS are designed to be engaging driver’s cars with dynamic exterior designs, but the larger, sedan configuration of the LS makes it inherently more practical and, therefore, often attracts a slightly different buyer,” says Ed Hellwig, with Lexus Product Communications. The LS500, for example, offers 23 combined MPG, based on EPA/DOT figures, compared with the LC500 at 19 combined MPG. For sure, performance-minded drivers will be attracted to the LC500. For one, a combination of high-tensile steel, titanium, carbon fiber and aluminum combine to reduce weight. These materials and other components, such as lift- and –drag-reducing air intakes and rear aero ducts, ensure superior handling, stability even at higher speeds and everyday driving comfort. This is also an attention-grabbing coupe, set off by a number of styling details such as flush-surface door handles with LEDs; these illuminate when the door is opened and darken 15 seconds after closing. experience many will enjoy, although Lexus might consider placing these on the column independent of the steering wheel for better overall functionality. And, a supercharger option for this and the RCF, if Lexus engineers could find the engine-compartment space, would propel these cars up yet another notch. The transmission is cat quick, with gear changes in 0.12 seconds, Lexus says, even better than the fine earlier eightspeed unit and certainly equal to the shifting abilities of even talented drivers. Even better: The company says that the smart system learns your habits, optimizing the gear based on speed and acceleration and what you’ve requested before in similar situations. Both cars incorporate drive-enhancing suspension systems. The LC has an independent double-joint multilink with forged aluminum components, coil springs, linear-solenoid-actuated shock absorbers and adhesive-bonded stabilizer bar (front/ rear) suspension. The LS has Adaptive Variable Suspension: independent multilink with forged aluminum components and stabilizer bars (front/rear). Our LS also had the optional Air Suspension system, which replaces the standard coil springs with air springs. “These provide a smoother ride in addition to offering the ability to alter the ride height, such as lifting the car up to Volume XVI, Number 02

make it easier to get in and out of,” Hellwig explains. Our LS also had rear wheel steering as part of the optional F SPORT performance package. “It’s designed to improve the overall handling and responsiveness,” Hellwig said. This option also includes Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), which optimizes steering response at different speeds. “At lower speeds, the ratio changes so you can turn lock-tolock with less movement to make it easier to maneuver in tight spaces. At higher speeds, the ratio is relaxed to offer more precise control and improved stability,” Hellwig says. Our LC also had VGRS as part of its optional Performance Package. The LC and LS share the same braking system: fourwheel power-assisted disc brakes with Electronic Controlled Braking (ECB); four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD); and Brake Assist. For additional stability, our LC had run-flat tires mounted on 21-inch forged alloy wheels, which seemed to further tighten our slalomlike turns and overall driving. Of course, our Lexus cars had features such as the available Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and entertainment options, including the Mark Levinson Audio System with 23 speakers and 900-plus watts, which made our rides safer and sonically magnificent. lexus.com
