The 49th-Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction: January 11–19 The Paul Walker Collection Celebrates the Actor’s Life and Love for Cars written by David M. Brown “I’m an actor –– that’s my job, but it’s not my life,” the late Paul Walker once said. “I have a lot of other interests, too.” These included passions for family, philanthropy and automobiles, which he enjoyed in daily life and on screen as the protagonist of six Fast and Furious movies, which won worldwide box-office attention for more than a decade. A group of 21 collectible vehicles from his eclectic collection will be offered at the 49th Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction, January 11–19, 2020, at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Established in 1971, the Scottsdale-based company, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, also produces annual events in Palm Beach, Florida; at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut; and Las Vegas, Nevada. Seven BMW M3s –– two E30 M3s and five E36 M3 Lightweights –– highlight the Paul Walker Collection as well as a never-raced 2013 Ford Boss 302S race car and a custom 2009 Nissan 370Z.

The M3 septet includes two E30s: a 1988 (Lot #1374) and a 1991 coupe (Lot #1371.1). Both in Alpine White II, the early models are two of the 5,000 iterations sold in the United States from 1988–91. At just 2,867 pounds, the cars deliver superior handling, with MacPherson Strut/semi-trailing arm suspension, a large rear antiroll bar, revalved shocks and flared fenders and quarter panels. With 1,500 victories making it the most successful touring car ever, the M3 packed a 2.3-liter inline-4 producing 195 horses and 170 ft/lbs of torque; it’s tied to a 5-speed Getrag tranny and a limited-slip differential. The M3 Lightweights (Lots #1371, #1372, #1372.1, #1373, #1373.1) are the homologation specials for BMW North America, built for the IMSA Firehawk series. Weighing 2,950 pounds, they are about 220 pounds lighter than standard models, resulting from components such as aluminum doors, forged magnesium wheels and interior carbon fiber trim. Also casting out pounds are deletes such as radio, air-conditioning and the tool kit.

The BMW S50 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, rated at 240 horsepower and 225 ft/lbs of torque, is linked to a 5-speed manual and a 3:23 final drive ratio. Each engine was hand selected by BMW engineers after extensive track testing. Nearly all had a rear wing and front spoiler and Alpine White III paint finished with BMW Motorsport-colored checkered flag livery on the left front and right-rear corners. “This group of five of the roughly 126 Lightweights produced in 1995 is probably the first time so many have appeared for sale in one place,” says Jeff Catlin, showroom division manager for Barrett-Jackson, who has been overseeing the collection in anticipation of its sale during the Scottsdale Auction, culminating in marquee-car appearances Saturday night, January 18. “We’re proud to help continue Paul Walker’s legacy by offering his esteemed collection to their new caretakers at our flagship Scottsdale event,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “Whoever buys them in January, it’s our hope that they will bring the same kind of joy to their homes that they brought Paul.” Fast and Furious A Saturday-night feature car is a never-raced 2013 Ford Boss 302S (Lot #1374.1), one of 50, powered by a 5.0-liter Ford Racing V-8 with Ford Racing PCS software and many other

official Ford Racing components. A 6-speed TREMEC T6060 manual transmission with Exedy clutch delivers the power to a Torsen T2R differential with 3.73 gears. The suspension includes coilover dampers, lower control arms with a Delrin bushing kit, Ford Racing anti-toll bar and Panhard bar and Brembo four-piston front racing brakes. Other features include a RECARO HANS Pro Racer seat, front splitter and adjustable carbon fiber wing. Joining the Boss 302S on the podium during the Scottsdale auction will be a custom 2009 Nissan 370Z (Lot #730) with only 2,623 miles; it appeared in Fast Five. Its VQ 3.7-liter V-6 outputs 332 horses and has a 5-speed manual transmission as well as many performance upgrades. In Brilliant Metallic Silver, appointed with graphics from Paul Walker’s charity, Reach Out Worldwide, the car includes teal Volk TE37 wheels and Hankook tires, RECARO HANS Pro Racer Seat and a detachable NRG steering wheel. “Paul Walker’s collection spanned five decades of automotive excellence and truly reflected his personal taste,” says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “Paul’s passion for performance was especially expressed in the cars he loved. This group of vehicles also represents the evolution of the hobby, as collectors are clearly broadening their horizons and diversifying their collections.”

Diversification is exemplified by other vehicles that Walker enjoyed. Two additional performance cars are a race-built 1989 Nissan Skyline (Lot #730.1) and, from 11 years later, a 2000 Audi S4 2.7 Quattro (Lot #373.1).
The third, a 2006 Toyota Tundra Access Cab SR5 Pickup (Lot #374) can tow up to 6,500 pounds and carry a payload of 1,580 pounds, In Phantom Grey over beige with black wheels, it has the 4.7-liter DOHC 32-valve 2-UZ-FE V-8.
The Audi features a 90-degree 2.7-liter V-6 with two parallel BorgWarner turbos. The car produces 261 horsepower and 295 ft/lbs of torque, with each cylinder fed by five valves. All wheels are driven by a Torsen T-2 quattro all-wheel-drive system. A six-speed manual is also included.
He was also prescient in acquiring a 1995 Ford Bronco (Lot #731) as these fifth-generation trucks are now among the most popular among collectors. Walker’s is an Eddie Bauer Edition, with the 351-cid Windsor V-8 and four-wheel drive, liveried in black on a tan leather interior. It even has one of those massive early cell phones.
Built for the track, the earlier Nissan in Gun Gray carries the legendary Godzilla RB26DETT 2.6-liter inline-6 engine with twin turbos and the ATTESSA all-wheel-drive system. Upgrades include a full roll cage, Enkei RPF1 wheels and Endless brake calipers. Trucks, Cycles, Projects and a Bronco A trio of trucks were Walker’s utilitarian vehicles; he was equally happy on the film set and the track and on his ranch. The earliest is a 2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty Pickup (Lot #374.1), with the Powerstroke 7.3-liter turbo diesel, a V-8 with 175 horses and a muscular 525 ft/lbs of torque. The workhorse has an extended cab and short bed. From the next year, a 2004 GMC Sierra K2500HD (Lot #375.1) is also a turbo diesel, 300 horsepower and 520 ft/lbs of torque, with an Allison 1000 5-speed and four-wheel drive.

Two-wheel ecstasy was part of his life, too. Three motorcycles to be offered are a ’40s-inspired 2005 Harley-Davidson FLTSCI Custom (Lot #377), built by Road Dog Customs in California; 2011 BMW F800GS (Lot #376.1), with an 800-cc parallel twin engine, weighing in at 392 pounds; and a 2008 Suzuki DRZ-400SM (Lot #373), featuring a 398-cc DOHC liquid-cooled engine and a 5-speed gearbox, the road-legal version of the DR-400S. Another Chevy II, a Nova Custom Coupe (Lot #731.1) resulted from a meeting between Year One president Kevin King and Walker during the filming of 2Fast2Furious; it features large Wheel Vintigues billet rallye wheels and BG Goodrich G-Force tires, 245/45-17 in the front and 295/35-18 out back. Wagon (Lot #375) and, from the following year, a relatively rare Chevelle 300 W Wagon (Lot #376) was a future project. One of just 2,710 in 1964, it’s a classic “surf wagon,” Jackson says. “To finish Paul’s vision,” he notes, “would be an honor for the new owner.” The Paul Walker Legacy The sale of his cars at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 49 is an opportunity to celebrate Paul Walker’s other passions, too: his love for his daughter, Meadow, his brothers and sisters and friends; his charitable work, particularly through Reach Out Worldwide, founded in 2010; a love for the sea; and his everyday acts of kindness. “Paul was the kind of person who valued and respected others,” says his longtime friend, Brandon Birtell, who is the executor of the Walker estate, which will receive all funds raised from the auction of the cars. He was Walker’s producing partner for 12plus years on almost all of his films, including the Fast franchise. “He would go out of his way to do the simplest things, from stopping to open the door for others, making sure he looked someone in the eye when they were speaking or help someone that clearly needed to be helped,” Birtell says. Walker shared his great automotive joy and knowledge with him. “We spent a lot of time in some of these cars, talking cars, talking life,” he says. “We all love that sense of freedom, but for him it was a unique haven of peace, control and anonymity. All these vehicles are an expression of Paul’s lifestyle. The stories are right in the cars.” Remember the devastating January 2010 earthquake that

ripped through the poor island nation of Haiti? Walker was there with a relief team. That effort created Reach Out Worldwide (ROWW) to provide resources, including personnel for disaster response. He loved the sea, where he spent much of his nonfamily free time when he wasn’t driving. In addition to his car and action movies, he completed a marine biology series, Expedition Great White with National Geographic, tagging great white sharks for study. Walker’s charitable work continues through the Paul Walker Foundation, founded by Meadow to “do good” by providing grants, scholarship opportunities and acts of goodwill. “Meadow created the Foundation as a way to honor her father and keep his spirit alive through supporting the things he was passionate about. It’s a way of helping others do things he would have wanted to do himself,” says Birtell, who proudly helps her accomplish its goals. “She’s so much like her dad; it’s pretty amazing how life works. Concours in the Hills – Zero to 950 in 6 The current benchmark for high-performance cars is to accelerate from zero to 60MPH in less than 3 seconds, but Concours in the Hills has gone from zero to 950 in just six - years, that is. Let’s clarify that. The first show was in 2014 but six short years later in 2019 there were about 950 cars on display. In fact, the show has broken records in all four categories each successive year, growing to an estimated 25,000 spectators, 108 dealers and sponsors, and over $155,000 raised for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The show was started by Peter Volny, a life-long car aficionado. While there were many car shows across the valley of the sun, they were all held in parking lots where the cars were close together and it was difficult, if not impossible, to prevent non-show cars from having access. If someone left their SUV or pick-up truck overnight, you might have a million-dollar Ferrari next to it, and that just doesn’t look good It is now the largest car show of its type in Arizona drawing entries from all over the state and as far away as California, Nevada and Colorado. Volny attributes the success to the venue, which is on the gently rolling hills of a park surrounding a lake with America’s tallest fountain and a back-

drop of rugged mountain peaks. The show is not a formal “white gloves” concours but really a fun event designed to showcase a wide variety of domestic and imported vehicles and provide an opportunity for car lovers to meet new people and make new friends. The show is arranged by vehicle brand to encourage exhibitors to make those new acquaintances. Awards are given for Best Domestic, Best Import and Best of Show with a new award this year for Best Car Club Display. One obstacle as the show grew its boundaries was entrants who didn’t want to be in the “boondocks” on the outer edges of the show. This was countered in 2017 by inviting the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation to fly in their genuine Vietnam-era Cobra Gunship Helicopter around which the organizers parked 31 Cobras, attracting huge crowds. In 2018 the United States Marine Corps flew in the current version of the Cobra called the Viper so naturally there were a group of Vipers arranged around that and even larger crowds. In 2019 there were five helicopters on display and more are expected in 2020. There is now a large military vehicle section.

The show is officially declared open by a group of famous racing car drivers who live in the valley. In the past this has included two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk, Daytona 24 Hour winner Didier Theys, Indy-Car Champion Paul Tracy, Sports Car World Champion Bob Bondurant, Indy-Car Driver Lyn St. James, and Mirage Driver and Team Owner Harley Cluxton. All have been invited again, plus a few others, and it is hoped that most, if not all, will once again open the show. This is done by them announcing “Gentlemen, and Ladies, Start Your Engines� at which time all the cars fire up and rev their motors, which may actually register on the Richter Scale. The 2020 Concours in the Hills will be held on Saturday February 8, 2019 and the organizers are hoping to break all the records yet again. Vehicle entries are just $60 while spectators are free. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS A new form of luxury The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC represents a new form of luxury in the SUV segment. It extends the portfolio of the Mercedes-Maybach brand by combining the body design and technical basis of the GLS with the luxury of a top-class sedan. Its spacious interior with the highest-grade materials and extremely effective noise insulation creates a stylish and luxurious atmosphere. From their pleasantly elevated seating position, thanks to electronically operated roller sun blinds on the two rear side windows, the passengers can decide for themselves how much of their surroundings they want to see. The AIRMATIC suspension included with the fully-active EACTIVE BODY CONTROL system effectively keeps the road bumps at bay. For the first time there is a dedicated Maybach drive program that ensures even more comfort. Access and egress are also highly convenient: when the doors are opened, the vehicle is lowered slightly, and an illuminated running board made of anodized aluminum quickly and silently emerges on the respective side of the vehicle. The V8 engine with a displacement of four liters, which can develop 550 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque, is an engine variant developed exclusively for Maybach and moves the car discreetly and powerfully. The engine is combined with the 48-volt system EQ Boost. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC will go on sale in the U.S. in the second half of 2020.

As a special, Maybach-specific feature, two-tone paintwork is available in eight different, elegant color combinations. Another eye-catching feature of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is the electronically extending running boards. They make accessing and leaving the high seating position both convenient and safe. With surfaces of anodized aluminum laced with black rubber strips, illuminated in the dark and particularly wide in the area of the rear doors, they ensure a very special visual appeal. When in their retracted state, the running boards are concealed behind the side sill panels. If a rear door is opened, the running board on the side concerned automatically swings into position in around one second. GreatGarages The Mini/MINI Celebrates the Big 60 written by David M. Brown Devotees love their MINIs in many ways. A frequent thought is that they’re just so cute and lovable. But that wasn’t the normal take in 1959, when Alec Issigonis designed the first Mini for British Motor Corporation (BMC), later part of British Leyland. The eminently pragmatic Turkish/ Greek mechanical engineer and racer had spent his formative years at British manufacturers, Humber, Morris, Alvis and then Morris again. He was an often crusty man of considerable achievement; he did not design cute or lovable things. “When the wraps came off the first Mini, 60 years ago this year, there was never any question that the car was cute or lovable,” says Giles Chapman, the distinguished British automotive writer whose most recent work is MINI: 60 Years from Motorbooks. “If you’d even suggested that to its dogmatic designer, he’d have shot you a look of such withering, intense scorn you’d have felt ashamed for being so soppy.”
“The company needed a vehicle to win back car buyers attracted to the thrifty ‘bubble cars’ that thrived after the Suez Crisis and resultant fuel shortages,” he notes. In 1956, Gamal Nasser-led Egypt assumed control of that essential shipping lane in the Middle East, garroting oil exports and raising costs. “Issigonis agreed to take on the challenge,” Chapman says, “but only if he was given complete freedom to do it his way because he was brimming over with new ideas.”
Merchandising the Mini A front-wheel-drive layout maximized passenger and luggage capacity, eliminating a large back axle and a driveshaft running front-to-back. And, to fit BMC’s A-series engine, Issigonis positioned it transversely, rather than longitudinally, with the 4-speed gearbox underneath rather than end-on, Chapman explains.
Soppiness wasn’t signature Issigonis. In the tradition of economy-car pioneers as varied as the Fiat Topolino, the Citroen Type C and the Volkswagen Beetle, he “designed the Mini as an exercise in engineering logic of a purity rarely known before or since,” Chapman says. “In a little over two years, he created from scratch a car that could carry four adults within the smallest dimensions possible to allow reasonable comfort.”
Each of the front wheels received power through constantvelocity joints, and Issigonis neatly arranged the underhood space to ensure about 80 percent for the car’s cabin to accommodate four passengers and their baggage. An early ad, in fact, proudly shows four people and their possessions outside the car to show that, properly stowed, everyone, and everything, could take to the road together under one mobile roof.
The designer was well-known in the industry when, in 1956, he was asked by BMC to create the ultimate economy car, continuing a theme which had made Morris successful. Production costs at BMC were small; frippery and fancies were banished in favor of post-war and oil-shortage austerity.
This kind of packaging was new. “But Issigonis’ orgy of innovation went further,” Chapman explains. The car included a compact suspension system with rubber cones rather than conventional springs; with the car’s small wheels, this helped to maximize interior space.

Conservative English buyers were wary of such an innovative machine. “Teething troubles” also occurred because of hurried development, and water leaks and flimsy exhausts were remedied only as production was rolling. But sales took hold, Chapman notes: “Owners began to experience something they’d never encountered before in an economy car: fun.” Because of the front wheel drive and the wheels being seated, go-kartlike, at extreme corners the Mini demonstrated road holding that became well known on the track and the street, making for swift, safe and, again, fun transportation. “Together with precise, direct steering and superb weight distribution, the Mini felt fast even if it wasn’t actually very powerful,” he explains. Formula 1 car builder John Cooper liked a beefed-up Mini, too, so he produced one with a tuned engine, extra carburetor and disc front brakes: The legendary Mini Cooper was born in 1961. “The combination of added engine power and the Mini’s surefooted handling made the car a phenomenon on racetracks and rally circuits throughout the 1960s, and well beyond,” Chapman says. Later famous drivers did their apprenticeships with the Mini, stars such as Jochen Rindt, James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Writes Chapman in MINI: “Lauda started racing a secondhand Cooper S while vainly trying to keep his antics a secret from disapproving, fearful parents. . . . These days F1 prodigies start out in karts, but back then, it was usually Minis.” (p. 61). The street spoke, too, with buyers customizing their Mini Coopers to the height of their creativity and depth of their

wallets. “The quickest cars for getting across London now became the most luxurious, too, with Rolls-Royce-style seats, dark-tinted windows, walnut dashboards and built-in tape recorders,” Chapman says. Variants were produced, such as the popular Mini van for merchants and the Mini Traveller for family hauling, kids, canines and full kit. And, celebrities loved them. Autonut Peter Sellers, as inept Inspector Clouseau, drove them in the first two Pink Panther movies, and Mike Nesmith of the Monkees rock group spent about $8,000 for a superlatively upgraded version: perhaps the most expensive Mini ever built. The Mini even sang for all four members of the Beetles. And Steve McQueen, the car- and motorcycle-loving actor, also had one. Enzo Ferrari, too. And ballet star, Margot Fonteyn. Popularity peaked in 1971, when a best-ever 318,000 Minis were sold. But a new “super-mini” was emerging, such as the Ford Fiesta with a hatchback third door and folding rear seats. “It was still fun to drive but was now more comfortable and practical,” Chapman says. “They stole Mini sales and started to make Alec Issigonis’ little gem seem rather dated.” Other road hazards were ahead. British Leyland required a bail-out by the British government in 1975. The Mini suffered, and the car aged. Fortunately, fans everywhere and wealthy Mini fanatics in Japan provided enough demand. In 1990, the Mini Cooper made a welcome return after being axed in 1971, and the feisty car, quite astonishingly, survived another decade.

thinking, more Maxi than Mini. “Owners of the new MINI, meanwhile, just enjoy it as the premium product it now is,” Chapman says. “They’re largely unaware its 1959 ancestor is the most influential single car Britain has ever produced.”
Six Decades of Delicious Motoring
In spirit with the new ownership, the new MINI focused on the Mini Cooper performance, image and heritage. The new BMWled car was larger overall but not particularly spacious inside: a fun “hot hatchback” with vivid retro overtones. “But it was for well-paid professionals, not a bargain-priced family tin box,” Chapman explains.
•Austin Se7en/Morris Mini-Minor –– Debuting August 26, 1959, the first Minis were near-identical cars sold as the Austin Se7en and the Morris Mini, at about £496 (or around $1,200 at the time in United States currency). Issigonis’ minimalism meant details such as cords to slam the door, not handles, sliding windows and a dial in the center of a dashboard that was basically a parcel shelf.
Still, the new MINI was exhilarating to drive and could be personalized with options and liveries worthy of the BMW echelon. Soon there was an entire family of MINI cars, including convertibles, Clubman estates and Countryman fourwheel drive versions.
•Mini Cooper S –– With racer John Cooper’s involvement, Mini Cooper S cars won the Monte Carlo Rally three times, in 1964, ’65 and ’67. It finished first in 1966, too, but was disqualified for a rule-breaking headlight setting. The Mini Cooper S became a 100 mph car with the 76-bhp 1275-cc model in 1964.
In 2006, another all-new replacement debuted, with similar exterior and upgrades for optimum performance, economy, emissions and safety. Eight years later, the car was transformed again, including new engines; the first five-door model appeared. The MINI became a global player, including the United States, where the original car had been more a novelty, Chapman says.
•Mini Clubman –– In 1969, with the Mini now a part of the troubled British Leyland, the little car received a new more conventional nose, an improved interior, an 1100-cc engine and wind-down windows. Purists were not happy, but it sold amazingly well against new “superminis” like the Renault 5 and Fiat 127.

•Mini Cooper –– Through the 1990s, the original Mini was sustained by demand from Japan where, Chapman notes, “it became a late-life cult object. In fact, that country’s pressure

very little different from the first one in 1959,” Chapman says. “The engine and body were practically identical. Its survival throughout that time is an eye-opening story in itself.”
•MINI Cooper –– The BMW MINI began in 2001, redesigned for sporty luxury rather than economy for the budget-minded. “They were still great to drive, but they could be personalized to the nth degree,” Chapman says, noting that this helped to etch the car into the U.S. market.
Replacing the Mini with the MINI was tough. But BMW essentially reincarnated the Mini Cooper for the new millennium and its astute millennial buyers. “The Anglo-German process was fraught,” Chapman says, “but the result was a compact car that stoked desire, and pride, in a new way, while offering every safety, comfort and convenience factor the 21st-century consumer expects as a matter of course.”
•MINI Electric –– The internal combustion engine, all that Issigonis knew about motive power, is showing its silver with global concern about climate change. The third-generation of revived the MINI has a range of 145 miles on one charge and an all-digital dashboard. The future is up ahead. The Mini/MINI has charisma. “The driving experience has always been joyful –– scintillating even –– whether the power offered is meagre or mighty,” Chapman says. Many are called to small cars, but everyone who enjoys the joy of driving wants a Mini/MINI. The Mini was a constant in Britain’s motoring scene for 41 vicissitudinous years. “The last car made in 2000 really was
