CONCOURS IN THE HILLS SHATTERS MULTIPLE RECORDS, DRIVING WORLD-CLASS CARE FOR PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL story by Peter Volny photos by Rob Mains The 7th annual Concours in the Hills presented by Gila River Hotels & Casinos, a Scuderia Southwest event, raised $250,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 8. In just one of several records broken in 2020, the annual car extravaganza smashed its own goal to satisfy a 5-year, $500,000 pledge in just three years. The family friendly show was free to the public with donations generated by participating sponsors and vehicle owners, and attracted 30,000 spectators. Now a signature attraction in the Southwest, the event continues to garner national attention and sponsorships. An exciting new addition this year promised more star-power when Disney Corporation delivered a Ferrari P4 replica and a Ford GT40 replica along for display with fun champagne-popping photo booth ops. Stunt drivers from the Oscar winning “Ford v Ferrari” movie also made buzz-generating appearances. Against the lush backdrop of the sprawling Fountain Park, car enthusiasts from across the Southwest showcased a record 1,052 collector and exotic vehicles. The show launched with an announcement of “Drivers, Start Your Engines” from celebrated pros including Derek Daly (competed for 5 years in F1 and Indy Cars for 8 years); Arie Luyendyk (two time Indy 500 winner, Daytona & Sebring winner); Didier Theys (Daytona, Sebring, Spa and LeMans winner); Lyn St. James (Rookie of the Year at Indy, winner at Daytona, Sebring); Harley Cluxton (raced for Ferrari at LeMans and owner of the Mirage Racing Team). All are local residents of the Scottsdale area. The exciting diversity in vehicles ranged from American and international sports cars to the very rare and valuable. The show also featured military brawn including a US Marine Corps attack helicopter flown in from San Diego. Porsche USA featured a special reveal presentation of the Taycan, the all-electric high-performance sports car. The show featured music from local radio station 94.9 The Wow Factor, food trucks and fanfare for a lively, social atmosphere where car fanatics and casual observers converged for a good cause. “Concours in the Hills exceeded all expectations this year,” said Steve Schnall, senior vice president and chief development officer of Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Scuderia Southwest’s continued commitment to the children and families at Phoenix Children's is fueled by Peter Volny and David Crofford’s relentless drive. This year his team thrilled spectators with showmanship on wheels and military muscle. Bringing together car lovers from throughout The United States, the event will showcase approximately 2,500 hot rods, customs, muscle cars, trucks and classics. The weekend will also feature Goodguys AutoCross racing, entertainment, a swap meet, a Cars 4 Sale Corral, 200 vendor exhibits, awards and more. All three days, gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. On Saturday, March 21, three-time Top Fuel Champion, Antron Brown, will appear with his 10,000-horsepower AB Motorsports Global Electronic Technology dragster, courtesy of the sponsoring company. There is a wealth of great architecture in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area, but none is influenced more greatly than the architectural interpretations of Gerry Jones, who is affectionately known as Moses because he laid out the original land planning for the town of Carefree – well before there were any home sites on the northeast slope of Black Mountain. This distinctive 3.15 acre setting - the largest site in Nighthawk - includes lush Sonoran vegetation and huge granite boulders that I incorporated from the excavation building site.” This home began as a spec house that Jones desired to create knowing the difficulty of the terrain. “I took it on as a personal challenge to make it happen; today, mountainous terrain home design is my forté,” said the famed architectural designer, renowned for fashioning this lasting gem as well as many other home designs of his that are currently on display at the Cave Creek Museum.

Points West Venn Construction Helping to Shine a Light on the West Valley’s Class-A Space Opportunities written by Nick Esquer In the early 2000’s, the Greater Phoenix area saw a massive pilgrimage coming in from the west as Californians looking to be relieved of the clutches of high taxes and ever-evolving regulations looked for a place that was more neighborhoodfriendly and more pocket-friendly in the long run. In fact, tech giants such as Microsoft and Oracle have taken notice, buying up huge rectangular chunks of former farmland in the west valley to accommodate future data center projects. Now, local brokerages are taking notice as well, working with companies like Venn Construction to erect more than just houses and chain restaurants. Venn Construction has been working with local developers and brokers to invest in new class-A offices in the west valley, including new projects in places like Peoria, Glendale, and Surprise, where economic development director Jeanine Jerkovic has been overseeing the new Sterling Grove development. “Sterling Grove is a staff-gated master planned community that will encompass 2,200 homes overlooking an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed, Troon-managed private golf course as well as a 35,000 square foot modern ranch-inspired club house with restaurants, a spa, fitness, tennis, pools and pickleball,” explains Jerkovic.

145,000 square feet of Class-A office space in is coming to The Westgate Office District in Glendale. The Westgate Office District is part of the vibrant mixed-use development that is an ideal live, work, play office environment.
Projects like Sterling Grove are helping to attract Class A office development, which are multi-story buildings housing more than one company. While the city has been a hub of Spring Training baseball for years, it’s now surging in population numbers, reaching nearly 140,000, some of which are younger professionals looking for safe and quiet neighborhoods they can go home to. This characterization of cities like Surprise and Peoria was put on full display in a recent Class-A forum spearheaded by Venn. One of the major goals of the forum was to show that imaginary line mentioned above, separating the west valley from Phoenix and the rest of the east valley has actually shifted and pushed north, separating some of the more northern reaches of the valley with the bulk of the southern half. As businesses and neighborhoods continue to pop up out west, the I-17 divider is nothing more than a highway. Venn Construction is working with local developers and brokers to show that the entire region is becoming more and more connected through development. “This was a rapid-fire way to get the data out in front, share the information of these communities’ quality of life, schools,

amenities, housing and, most importantly, the workforce that will drive the HR departments of the users to fuel their business,” notes Stephanie Fogelson, vice president of project development at Venn. “The cities truly delivered, and the packed house of brokers and developers heard a very new message: the west valley is no longer a sleepy little town. It is jam-packed with a quality workforce who would more than welcome working much closer to their half-milliondollar homes.” In Peoria, the city is seeing a steady 2.5-percent growth rate year-over-year when it comes to its population, which now comes in at just over 170,000. Having always been known as a sports and athletics destination for such things as Spring Training baseball, basketball tournaments, and racing, Peoria is attracting more people for more than just sports. Furthermore, the city is constantly being ranked as one of the best places to live and work, including landing at number four on WalletHub’s best places to get a job. Peoria currently has several high-profile development sites throughout its boundaries including mixed-use projects and medical facilities, such as Banner’s newest rehabilitation hospital that just opened and plans for ValleyWise Health’s primary and specialty care center set to open later this year.

Another way this is evident is through its P83 Entertainment District, a 17-acre destination for the younger families and professionals moving to the area. Seeing this as an opportunity, the city’s developers are circling the idea of bringing a vertical mixed-use development of more than one million square feet to Peoria, including space for Class-A offices, a hotel, mid-rise residential units, and more entertainment. “I truly believe when you look at market entry you have to assess both data and information. The brokers and developers began to read the data, they were impressed and pausing. That pause in assessment is a great first step, but it won’t move a needle. We need to then bring the information of how great these communities are to overlay it with the data, which shows that now is the perfect time to invest in Class-A office space,” adds Fogelson.

This is something that Schlitt has adjusted to, gaining exposure on a nearly global level for his unique inventory that includes La Ferrari Coupes, Cullinan SUVs, and Aventador Roadsters. “It seems that people are making more money at a younger age now. You’re seeing influencers and people on social media with more money and they come in and they say when they made this much money, they would buy a Ferrari,” Schlitt says. “But then they realize for them the tech isn’t there or they like all the touchscreen stuff, so it may be better that they do look at a Bentley. And we have them all here, so they don’t have to go down the road or the next dealerships.”

AZ Euros Paul Walker’s Audi S4 photos by Chris Boesel Highline: What were the reasons (obvious or not) that you both decided to go ahead and purchase Paul Walker’s Audi S4? AZEUROS: For me (Christian) it was a few things. We have a really hard time saying no to B5 S4s! It is the car that basically brought Chad I together. We have similar taste in cars and Paul’s car was extremely appealing to us and AZ Euros. The unknown, it was such an unassuming car in his amazing collection and such little about the car was on the internet that made me want it. I think Chad will agree that we love the chase in trying to acquire a car. So when we found out it was going to Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2020 it was like the “race” to make the car ours was on! It being Paul’s car was a huge factor, as corny as it sounds Paul and the Fast & Furious franchise undeniably changed the car scene. Owning a sliver of his collection was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Highline: Can you give us a brief description of the car ? (year, make , model, horsepower, additional modifications) AZEUROS: 2000 Audi S4 built for the North American market and considered a “narrow” body car. It has been converted to a “wide” body version using extremely rare parts from the “wide” body RS4 only offered in the European market. Also some extremely rare lightweight magnesium race spec BBS RE656 wheels in the perfect fitment for the car from exChampion Racing cars raced in the World Challenge GT Series. It has some light bolt ons, engine tuning and exhaust. The car is rated for about 250hp and 258 ft/lbs of torque when stock. In its current set up it is around 350hp. We will be taking the car on a journey to reach the 500hp mark in the coming months.
Highline: What are your plans for the car? Also, where can we tune in to see updates? AZEUROS: We have already started to collect parts, received parts from donating sponsors and pulling some rare collectible parts from our personal collection. The back of the car will get a makeover to match the aggressive styling and beauty of the front end. Some fresh black paint on the roof to correct the peeling paint from some fluid contamination from storage. We are working closely with some big names and companies in the industry to help get the car to today’s standard and what we think Paul would have wanted. Follow @azeuros and @azeuros_chad. 16th Annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance Honors Bugatti & Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing April 17–19 written by David M. Brown The 16th La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, will honor the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing and the Bugatti legacy at Ellen Browning Scripps Park on the bluffs of La Jolla Cove in San Diego, April 19, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., completing a weekend of festivities.
Ettore Bugatti’s design and manufacturing legacy will be celebrated during this, the 110th anniversary of the first Bugatti automobile. Inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2000, Bugatti will be acknowledged as a car designer who produced some of the finest road cars and racecars of his day.
Presented by LPL Financial and Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty to celebrate its own 16th year of automotive excellence, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance will showcase 120-plus stellar automobiles from around the world. On Saturday, April 18, the free Motor Car Classic will feature 75 vehicles from car clubs on the street next to the park.
The American Bugatti Club, founded in Southern California in 1960, will assist in honoring the great marque in five judged classes, while also celebrating the group’s 60th anniversary. Among the Bugattis to appear is the Pur Sang Prototype, which preceded the first production Bugatti in 1910, the Type 13, the “Brescia.” And, an example of one of his son Jean’s designs, the great 1936 Type 57S Atlantic coupe, will also be seen.
Produced from 1954 to 1957, the 300SL Gull Wing is so called because of its upward-opening doors, engine displacement of almost 300 centiliters and “Super-Light” tubular frame construction. A number of these will be displayed, including the 1955 owned by Valley collector Dan Withers, which was featured in Highline Autos February GreatGarages.

8TH ANNUAL ENZO FERRARI TRIBUTE photos by Joseph Chen Late February ushered in the 8th Annual Enzo Ferrari Tribute gathering at the Petersen Automotive Museum. As it was also the 30th anniversary of the Ferrari F40, a whole line of this legendary car was arguably the highlight of the event. A vast array of models from the Prancing Horse showed up, from the 308 GTS to the LaFerrari. A refreshing sight for many was also the variety of colors present, not just Rosso Corsa. Some personal highlights include a Tour de France Blue 360 Challenge Stradale, manual 612 Scaglietti, and not one, but two white Ferrari Testarossas. Stephen Grisanti will take any route to find the right car: He’ll even place a want ad. Two of the many classic Porsches he has stewarded in his lifetime, his 1959 356A and first 914-6, he found along that road. Today, the businessman, car-care writer and collector has four Porsches and five Harley-Davidsons, including a rare 1959 hog from his birth year to match the 356A. “Every one of my cars still has the engine and transmission that it left the Porsche factory in,” he says. “I have the certificate of authenticity I have framed on my garage wall for each one.” Following his automotive passion, he moved from his Rye, New York, home to build a new home and garage in Somers, New York, for himself, his wife Brigitte and his collection. To save space, he installed two lifts. Equipped with a loft/ office for admiring views, the space is porcelain tiled, heated, air-conditioned and dehumidified, with special lighting, custom barn doors, storage, compressed air and a complete vacuum system. He pitched the garage slightly so that he can release the brake and roll out instead of starting the cars inside. Artwork is posted throughout, including a portrait of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, the marque’s founder. Outside the garage hangs his shingle, “il mio sogno,” My Dream.” Grisanti has been collecting Porsches since 2004, including

cars he has sold, such as a 1964 Porsche 356C Coupe in Signal Red with Black interior; 1970 914-6, Irish Green with Tan interior; 1986 Porsche 930 Euro Turbo, rare White Gold with Palomino interior; 1991 Porsche 964 Carrera 4, Guards Red with black interior; 2004 Boxster Spyder, Racing Silver with Black interior; and a 2013 Porsche Carrera S Cabrio, Speed Yellow with Black interior. He’s also owned VWs and Karmman Ghias and a Harley. Memories make collections. For Grisanti, Porsche and HarleyDavidson have been his passion for decades. Passionate Harley owners will appreciate his modest collection: They’re from the same family of cycles but different. “One thing they all do well is sing,” he says. “The Harley sound is like no other.” He wanted a Harley-Davidson since he was 19. Five years later, he purchased his first and had the classic American two-wheeler for 15 years; he sold it when he became a single parent. His Porsches represent the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’90s. Each is extremely rare because of low production numbers, all are in great condition and every one gets used. “Sure, they look like garage queens, but I have the expertise and knowledge to keep them looking the same after each one is driven,” he says, noting their therapeutic value. “I set the music, pour the wine and slowly massage each vehicle back to perfection before covering them.”

The love began at 12 in small Mount Vernon, New York. “I was walking to work one late afternoon when I saw and heard a 1972 Ravenna Green 914-4. I had never seen anything like it, nor had I ever experienced a color as bright and fascinating as this green,” he recalls. “It was almost fluorescent and had a shine so bright that I had to walk over and take a closer look.”
He waited to start his collection. At 23, he opened Classic Shine Auto Fitness Center and Greenwich Metal Finishing, both thriving today in Greenwich, Connecticut, under different ownership. He also wrote car-care articles and books and played drums in a band that booked gigs every weekend. “When he sold his businesses and took some time off, that was when he was able to start his dream search,” Smith says.
The owner, Peter, was a friend of his older brother; he asked for a ride, got it and he’s been riding in Porsches since. For him, vintage Porsches are the most reliable and low-maintenance cars to own compared to other marques of the era, he says. “The combination of the lines, smell, different paints, leathers and every detail that it takes to create these works of art truly stimulate me.”
In 2004, he purchased his first collectible, a Guards Red 1991 964 C-4 with very low mileage, from the original owner. Next was a White Gold 1986 930 Turbo. “The wide body, huge tail, and famous racing history is enough to excite any classic car enthusiast,” he says, noting that when it was nearing the 30,000-mile mark he knew that to maintain its high value, he would have to use it less. So, he reluctantly sold it.
His first car –– almost –– was a 914. He and his dad went to look at one in town. Sean Scott Smith, a New York photographer and writer, tells the story: "The car was hidden under a tarp. It was Forest Green. When the doors were opened, it was a forest of cobwebs and the smell of mildew, and the motor didn’t turn over. His father, a Caddy guy, told him, ‘You are not buying this car. Foreign cars are no good;
History, originality, documentation, condition, matching numbers and provenance make the difference with collectors. “For me, that’s the only way I will consider adding one to my collection. Each box must be checked,” Grisanti says. “As badly as I wanted to own a ’59 Harley, had it not had its original engine, I would have passed, even if it meant I would not find another one.”

1970 Porsche 914-6 Targa and 1959 Harley-Davidson Sportster XLH
A Place for Porsches, a House of Harleys •1959 Harley-Davidson Sportster XLH –– This gray-andwhite example is one of 997 built. “Finding a 1959 Harley Davidson Sportster is extremely difficult, but finding one that is complete with the original engine is nearly impossible,” Grisanti says. For 3½-years in Pratt, Kansas, motorcycle historian and collector Terry Richardson restored it. “There was not one part of this machine that wasn’t restored to absolute perfection,” he adds. “She is a masterpiece and would sit well in any enthusiast’s office as a piece of artwork.” He’d been searching for a ’59 for years. One cold Sunday evening in front of the fireplace, he saw a listing for a 1959 BMW R-50 motorcycle offered by Richardson in “stunning restored condition.” He purchased it, believing the chances of finding a ’59 Harley minimal. Six months later, he noticed an ad for a ’59 Harley-Davidson Sportster XLH in Chicago Illinois; after confirming its authenticity, he bought it. “When my wife Brigitte suggested we ship it directly to Terry in Pratt, Kansas, I said ‘How brilliant!’” he recalls. In the interim, he sold the BMW in two weeks to a Ferrari collector in Boca Raton, Florida, who still cherishes it. He had Pratt change the color, as he didn’t like any of the five original ones offered. “Only two small fenders and a gas tank

required painting to my liking,” he notes. “I did use the correct Harley white and a gray from a very early Harley-Davidson. My feeling was that this bike was so special and if I ever decided to part with it, it would not take much to paint the three parts.” When the finished Harley was scheduled to be delivered, Grisanti sat on the porch, ready to celebrate with a good bottle of red wine with his best friend and Brigitte. His new ride arrived damaged in the rear. The driver didn’t accept responsibility, so Grisanti refused delivery and sent it trucking back to Pratt, Kansas. Six months later, the Sportster arrived as it had left Richardson’s shop. Uncork and celebrate. •1959 Porsche 356A Convertible –– Ivory on Red, this is one of the 1,331 built. A 100-point car, it was completely restored by a master metal expert. “The search for this car was one of the most difficult, as I finally decided to buy one at the peak of the market,” he says. “I waited a year and a half for a one-owner example that was part of an estate sale. Every document from the window sticker to the original purchase documents were still with the car.” He owned this Silver-on-Black car for approximately eight months but wasn’t happy. “It was the first classic car I purchased that wasn’t near mint condition,” he recalls. “I thought I could get accustomed to the patina, but it never happened. I finally decided to sell her and start my search all over again.”

For this 356A, he flew to Sacramento and meticulously examined the car for three days. This one makes him happy. “It has the original colors and has been done to the exact specifications that Porsche first created,” Smith says. “It is a spectacular example and fits perfectly in the space.”
He purchased this car the same day he found the 1968 912. “I was selling my 1986 930 Turbo and saw an ad for the Golden Green 912,” he recalls. “I took my young daughter with me to take a look, and when I arrived at the garage, I saw the 912 sitting alongside the most beautiful Adriatic Blue 914-6.”
•1968 Porsche 912 –– Restored by Mark Allen, who owns Vintage Excellence, the matching-numbers coupe is in extremely rare Golden Green with Black interior, one of just six delivered with this body color. Also rare for its time, the car has factory air-conditioning.
Grisanti went home and showed pictures of the 914-6 and the 912 to Brigitte. She asked, “Is there any way we can do both?” she asked. How could Grisanti deny her, and him?
Grisanti has photos of the restoration showing every part laid out on the restoration shop’s floor prior to reassembly. In addition, he has the history, documentation and vintage photos including one of the first owner taking delivery. “This car gets the most use in my collection, including doing many rallies in the Northeast. She looks brand new, and once I complete a rally, I do a complete wheels-off detail from the underside to the brake calipers. It is also my wife’s favorite car and viewed as a part of our family.” •1970 Porsche 914-6 Targa –– In another rare color for this model, Adriatic Blue (on Black), this is one of 3,331 built. “She is one of my favorites, as the 914 was my first love when it comes to Porsches,” he says. He doesn’t have as much documented history on this car as on the others. He does know that a former owner, Dan Wyland, who had a Christmas tree farm in the Northwest, was working on a restoration for eight years before he died. The estate sold it to a 914 expert Craig Laughlin, who completed the restoration.

“The 914-6,” Smith says, “was a connection to his early teens, the realization of a childhood dream.” •1998 Porsche 993 C2S –– This Ocean Blue-on-Cashmere coupe represents the final year of the air-cooled Porsche and is one of 993 built. The very low mileage makes it rare and valuable, and the car has all of the factory components. Grisanti: “She is truly stunning.” Of all the classic cars he’s purchased, this one happened spontaneously. Every other car was sought and sourced from another state. “I was riding on my train into Manhattan and reading a Porsche 912 magazine,” he recalls. “An older gentleman who I had seen for many years tapped my knee and said, ‘I have a Porsche.’ He seemed to light up, so I asked what model.” When he discovered that the man, in his 80s, owned a 1998 C2S with very low mileage and in beautiful condition, Grisanti asked to see it as they lived just five minutes apart. “After learning about my love and passion for Porsches and understanding that I was only interested in buying it as an

addition to my collection, we made a deal,” Grisanti recalls. “I believe that it was meant to be mine as the next caretaker.” •2003 Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary –– In 2013, Grisanti purchased this Ultra Classic edition in rare Pearl White with just 1,300 miles from the original owner who had lost his sight in one eye, and, following surgery, placed it on a motorcycle lift where it remained for a decade. Grisanti and his wife use it regularly for long runs, posting between 5,000– 10,000 miles per year. He also recently rode with his 30-year-old daughter, Hope, not on this Harley but a Tri-Glide he rented from motorcycle legend Buddy Stubbs in Arizona. “I have been riding for most of my life, but no trip was as special as this one,” he recalls. “Spending time with my daughter on the road was something that every parent should experience. I call her, by the way, ‘Hopester,’ after Sportster.” •2011 Harley-Davidson Fatboy Low –– He purchased this Silver cycle from the original owner in 2017; it was six years old and only had 1,400 miles. “I love the bad-boy look of this machine, and it gives me the full sense of freedom as she is designed in the truest form,” he says. “Riding this type of bike is pure wind in the face and full exposure to the elements.” •2012 Harley-Davidson Seventy-Two –– Grisanti recently

purchased it from the original owner; it had only 1,053 miles, a factory chopper/bobber. “This model was discontinued and far different from all my larger bikes,” he says. “In fact, it is a blast to ride and so light compared to my touring bikes. I bought it for several reasons: I wanted something that was lighter, had more of a lean angle and in memory of my ’84 Sportster that I loved but sold.” •2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special –– In 2018, he purchased this motorcycle, in rare Sand Camo Denim. Then four years old, it only had 2,600 miles. He purchased the model specifically for the very long runs he does solo. “The Street Glide is the same type of motorcycle as the Fatboy in terms of weight and combines power and comfort,” he says. That makes it just perfect for those excursions into two-wheel ecstasy. *** Grisanti’s not a man of speed, so you’ll often find him cruising, not careening, on area highways and byways. “The real pleasure comes from being a caretaker, from the required nurturing and of course, driving them,” he says. “The saying, ‘It is more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow’: Well, that’s how I enjoy my collection.” If you or someone you know has a GreatGarage and would like it to be considered for an upcoming issue, please e-mail us at info@highline-autos.com.
