FOR SALE 1955 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SL GULLWING This 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing was most recently purchased at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in 2014 for $2,090,000.00, including auction fees, and has been carefully stored in a climate controlled environment. Over time, there have been only four owners of this immaculate beauty! It was originally bought new in Southern California at Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood. The original owner had the car until 1957 when he traded the car back into Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood. The second owner who lived in Santa Monica bought the car and had it for only 18 months. He then sold it directly to the third owner in 1960 who then owned the car for 53 years in Caifornia. The third owner previously confirmed to Barrett-Jackson that in his entire 53 years of ownership, he only put 6,000 miles on the car. He spent considerable time and money restoring the vehicle in the nine year period prior to taking it to the auction. All parts were supplied from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, CA who also assisted in the direction of the restoration. The vehicle comes with its 1956 California Yellow Plate that was with the car from new and the Black Plate issued by the State of California in 1960. This 300SL was the pride and joy of the one of the earliest members to join the Gullwing group and is still an active member today. To find a car that has an impeccable history, solid ownership fact pattern, restoration recently completed and in its original colors is certainly getting harder and harder to find. This 300SL is equipped with all matching numbers (engine, chassis, body, transmission, rear end and front axles) and its original 3-piece belly pans. Mecum’s Second Glendale Auction Generates $28.9 Million written by David M. Brown Of 1,210 vehicles offered, nearly 70 percent were sold during Mecum’s second annual auction, March 11–14, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Total sales were strong at $28.9 million. The event offered a large selection of hot rods, customs, resto mods, muscle cars, exotics, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, classics, Japanese imports and today’s supercars. Leading all sales at $1.1 million was a 2017 Ford GT Competition Series (Lot S117) with just 270 miles. Serial No. 67 was owned by Sebastien Bourdais, GTE class winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016, and is one of the three remaining Ford GT Competition Series. Its mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve Ecoboost V-6 produces 647 horsepower and 550 ft/lbs of torque and tops out at 216 mph. Second was a 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (Lot S134) with 151 miles, $385,000; its 5.4-liter engine generates 617 horses. Neishabori is the sixth-generation owner of his family’s rug weaving company, which began in 1790. When he was just 15, he came to the United States, graduated from Cal State Fullerton, then relocated the family business from Germany. He eventually opened today’s AZADI Fine Rugs and BELLA Fine Goods galleries in Scottsdale, Sedona, Telluride and Jackson Hole. “By placing these unique pieces in luxury homes such as this one, we hope to best display how they will enhance them,” he says. “And, by changing them regularly, we can make sure visitors to the home can see new pieces.” Exalted Mountainside Living Spanish Colonial homes debuted in parts of the Southwest settled by Spaniards from the 1600s to the mid-1800s, Aazami explains. Growth in the Greater Phoenix area’s southeast valley has exploded since Y2K. In Queen Creek, which housed just over 3,000 residents in 2000, the town is expected to surpass 40,000 during this year’s census and developers have been pouncing, setting towns like Queen Creek and Chandler up for a headcount of more than 100,000 in the years to come. But with recent events surrounding the economy’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, many are concerned about the future of commercial and residential development in the entire country, let alone specific markets. Fortunately, even in uncertain times as these, the industry is set up to continue to grow after a short pause, according to Derek Flottum, Vice President of Development for Irgens, a Milwaukee-based real estate development firm.

“We can’t just stop (building), but we acknowledge the reality of the situation,” Flottum explains. “We need to do what we can in the short term to manage cash flow. Long term, while being prudent in our decision making, we believe in the long-term viability of the Phoenix market and will continue to build product to meet user demand.” Flottum has more than 20 years’ experience in the real estate, financial services and capital markets fields. In 2018, he was tapped to lead Irgens’ efforts to expand its footprint in the southwest region in everything from industrial spaces to class A offices, including projects in the southeast valley, which has gained national recognition as the place to be in new development. While different industries’ futures are up in the air for the time being, waiting to see how things will land after stimulus bills from Capitol Hill come into effect and towns and states reopen for business, the commercial real estate development world is still pressing on. This is especially the case in the Greater Phoenix area, urges Flottum. Whether it’s Arizona’s reasonable cost of living, its

well-planned infrastructure, or its ever-growing employment pool, which, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, ranks second in the entire country in terms of new jobs added, Phoenix has a built-in resilience to some economic stress and uncertainty. “Cities are holding calls with development to dive in to help with streamlined processes. When it comes to the long term, not a lot has changed as to what they are doing,” Flottum explains. “The brokerage community is pushing hard to keep moving.”
Projects like Ascend and Playa represent what Flottum has been doing here in Arizona and what he’s expecting to continue to do even after these uncertain times pass. “Large corporations are saying we can’t stop, and we developers have to continue to have product,” he adds. Moving forward, companies like Irgens will continue to plot out spaces that will inspire more growth. While everyday lives and business paths will see a change in trajectory, in the long run, it’s only a temporary change in the southwest region’s future as a commercial development destination.
One project that Flottum is overseeing is a new build on the banks of Tempe Town Lake called 999 Playa. The building will see 94,000 square feet of Class A office space built in the bustling Arizona State University-adjacent location. It has ground floor offices, two levels of parking, and three additional levels of office space above the garage. This project comes ahead of Flottum’s 160,000 square foot Chandler Airport Center project, Ascend. The building will stand near the San Tan 202 freeway, offering easy access for interested tenants and close proximity to the region’s growing tech and business community and labor pool.

“Sell them or share them.” That’s what Maggie Buerman said to her husband Gunther about five years ago while they were participating in the other family passion: sailboat racing in their 12-meter New Zealand. “She said: ‘If you’re not going to sell some of these cars, then we need to share them with the public.’ So that’s what we did,” he recalls. They selected the 50 cars they loved to drive and on June 1, 2017, they opened the Newport Car Museum, in a 114,000square-foot former missile plant on 17 acres in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The former owner of the building, defensecontractor giant Raytheon, holds down its campus next door. New England’s largest auto museum, the Newport features 75-plus cars appear in a 70,000-square-foot exhibit hall sectioned into six thematic galleries. These focus on seven decades of stand-out modern automotive design: Ford/ Shelbys; Corvettes, World Cars, Fin Cars, American Muscle, “Then and Now” and Mopars. Wayne Lee is the museum and facility manager for the 501(c)(3) venue. An additional 5,000 square feet includes event space and a room with eight driving simulators which recreate racing venues such as the all-out Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans and the five-story Cork Screw drop at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey.
white C-1 Corvette. The newest models are vintage 2019, including a sleek Corvette ZR-1 convertible and a 700-plushorsepower Dodge Demon. They’re conveniently displayed on low-rise platforms and turntables, theatrical lighting, with theatrical lighting, commissioned large-format artwork and historic directional-sound videos in each gallery. “What’s also special is that there are no barrier ropes around the cars, so you can get up close to inspect them and take photos,” says Gunther, a car-collector for his entire adult life. He is former chairman of Harris Beach, LLC, a New York law firm and is chairman of American Rock Salt Co. in Retsof, N.Y. A native of Mannheim, Germany, he moved with his family to upstate New York when he was 4. Maggie is from Helsingborg, Sweden, and they met in beautiful Malmo in 1983 while participating in a regatta. They divide their time between homes in Highland Beach, Florida, and Newport, R.I. During the monthly “Hoods Up” Weekends, the museum reveals the engines, and car-savvy docents are always on the floor to answer questions.
An 1,800-square-foot gift shop is also included, and The Thunderbird Ballroom accommodates 250 for sit-down dinners or 500 for cocktails. Adjacent to the museum is Newport Car Storage, a 30,000-square-foot climate and dust-controlled facility for cars and motorcycles with concierge service.
“We also have a collection of Mid-Century modern furniture that provides people with fun places to rest and contemplate the cars as works of art,” Gunther, says. These include pieces by Americans Charles and Ray Eames and Florence Knoll Bassett and Denmark’s Arne Jacobsen and Hans Wegner. Cult classics include the Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen; the Bocca Sofa (representing Marilyn Monroe’s pouty red lips) by Gufram Italy’s Studio 65; and the Joe Chair (inspired by New York Yankees centerfielder Joe DiMaggio’s baseball glove) by Italian designers de Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi.

ever seen. So was born the Kaiser Darrin Roadster.” In Hollywood it was popular; Lucille Ball and Cary Grant both drove Kaiser Darrins. The Kaiser Darrin 161 was dropped from the company’s lineup after a single year, ending production at the end of summer 1954. Corporate finances were worsening, and the company was about to lose its assembly facilities. Even a snowstorm was blamed for ruining 50 cars, leaving a total of just 435 produced. Gunther notes that fewer than 200 probably remain.
•1954 Kaiser Darrin 161 –– Named for its designer and the cubic-inch displacement of its Willys-sourced inline six, the Kaiser Darrin 161 debuted at the Los Angeles Motorama as a prototype in November 1952. It was touted the “sports car the world has been waiting for.” Just a few months later, in New York City, the fiberglass-bodied Chevrolet Corvette was unveiled as America’s first major sports car.

In early 1952, designer Howard “Dutch” Darrin invited Henry J. Kaiser, head of Kaiser Motors, to his Santa Monica shop. He showed him another fiberglass-bodied two-seat roadster, this one based on the “100” chassis of Kaiser’s namesake, the Henry J automobile. Gunther tells the story: “At first Kaiser scolded Darrin, protesting, ‘We’re not in the business of building sports cars!’ But Kaiser’s wife Alyce was also in attendance, and she sided with Darrin, saying the car was the most beautiful thing she’d

Shelby saw that by 1965 the 289 Cobras, although successful on the track, needed more power if they were to compete with cars such as the new Corvette Grand Sports driven by legends such as Bob Bondurant on California courses. Shelby and Ken Miles, his works driver and engineer, tabbed Ford’s potent 427-cid V-8.

Assisting by Ford Motor Company’s technical team, they widened and lengthened the 289’s chassis to provide the stability the small car would need. They retained the original doors, windscreen, hood and trunk lid but uprated the suspension, incorporating coil springs on all fours instead of the less stiff transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, Gunther explains. To participate in the World Sports Car Championship in 1965, the FIA initially required that a minimum of 50 427s be built, but later that became 100, probably with the goading of Enzo Ferrari, who already feared them. Shelby now had 53 fullcompetition 427s and nowhere to race them. Of these, 19 went to privateers, and Ford took three. That left him with 31 cars with zero home or market. A New York City Ford dealer suggested that with full windshields the super-cars could be branded as “Semi Competition” and sold as “street cars.” The sticker price, though, of $9,600 doubled the average annual income of Americans and were not a fast sell. Today they are the most prized 427 Cobras; only the 19 full-competition cars exceed their market value. This 427 SC (Serial # CSX3031) is liveried in the famous Shelby blue with black interior and white side pipes. On the road, it is radical, once tested capable of going 0–100–0 mph in 13.2 seconds, a 26-year record that was the stuff of legends on the streets, coast to coast.

•1979 Porsche 930 Turbo –– The Porsche Turbo was such a departure from 911 design that in 1976 Porsche gave it an entirely new model, the Porsche 930 Turbo. The 930 Turbo has a front spoiler and flared fenders. The 911’s magnesium-cased five-speed transaxle was replaced with an aluminum four-speed gearbox, and the 930 Turbo was given a larger clutch as well as upgraded wheels, tires, brakes and suspension. The racing version of the 930 Turbo was the Porsche 935, which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright in 1979. Because of this victory, the 930 Turbo became much desired, resulting in long waiting lists for U.S. Porsche enthusiasts who paid as much as 30-percent over sticker. Drivers who were not accustomed to turbo lag had a difficult time handling the surge of power when the turbo kicked in, especially in wet conditions. For this reason, the 930 Turbo was nicknamed the “Widowmaker.” After the driver learned to control the power, however, the Porsche 930 Turbo was, and still is, great fun to drive.

2019 Corvette ZR1 for the 2000s
and ’70s, which created for the company a reputation for producing performance sports cars for the general public. After a decade or so of polite road cars in the 1980s, the “skunkworks” engineering group decided to work on its own time on Saturdays to develop a supercar to compete with Ferrari and at Le Mans, Gunther explains. It was introduced in 1988 at the British International Motor Show and went into production in 1992. The extraordinary Jaguar XJ220 immediately became the world’s fastest production car of that era, with a top speed of 217 mph and the capability of doing 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds. Only 271 of these cars were produced by Jaguar in a joint venture with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) from 1992 to 1994. In 1993, as the engineers had hoped, a Jaguar XJ220 won the GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The production XJ220 completed in June 1992 was a twoseat mid-engine coupe. It had a 542-hp, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, rear-wheel drive, and conventional steering and doors. It was quiet, comfortable, and very fast; even if it didn’t reach the 220-mph target that was the basis of its name, it came close, with a top speed of 217 mph, Gunther notes.
•2015 Porsche 918 Spyder –– Porsche unveiled the 918 Spyder hypercar at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. This was redefined performance: race-car acceleration, precision handling, long-range fuel economy and environmental friendliness. The entire production run of 918 was sold out by December of 2014, and only 294 came to the U.S. Its 608-hp 4.6-liter direct fuel-injected V-8 is based on the RS Spyder Lemans prototype race car. In addition, two electric motors, 154 hp for the rear wheels and 125 hp for the front wheels, add toward the total 887 horses. All-wheel-drive traction puts those big horses flat on the ground. A 180-degree crankshaft helps the car produce a unique snarling exhaust note. The 918 can be operated in one of five modes: Electric, Hybrid, Hybrid Sport, Race and Hot Lap. The Porsche 918 Spyder is the first production car to break the seven-minute barrier at Nürburgring. “Porsche’s drivers said they were told to exercise caution,” Gunther says. “They insisted they could have done better than the 6:57 posted.”

•2019 Corvette ZR1 –– “This is the fastest, quickest and most powerful production Corvette that Chevrolet has ever built –– the ultimate iteration of ‘America's Sports Car,’” Gunther says. With the turn of a dial, three distinct, selectable driver modes –– Tour, Sport and Track –– electronically calibrate up to 12 performance variables to customize the ZR1 for all roads. Its General Motors LT5 V-8 is an evolution of the 650-hp LT4 found in the Corvette Z06, Camaro ZL1 and the 640-hp Cadillac CTS-V. The car has a 52-percent larger supercharger with more boost (14.0 versus 9.4 psi) than previous models. Port-injected fueling supplements the direct-injection system, and other internal upgrades help the car achieve 755 hp @ 6300 rpm and 715 ftlbs of torque @ 4400 rpm. At least 600 ft-lbs of torque is available from 2200 rpm to the 6500 rpm redline: “The ZR1’s thrust is immediate, unrelenting and absolutely awesome,” he says. A carbon fiber underwing in the front is flush with the undercarriage, producing downforce without drag. And, in the rear, an adjustable carbon fiber wing works with the decklid spoiler. The front and rear wings coordinate for 950 pounds of downforce at 202 mph.

The exterior of the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition features high-quality white livery with a historical design. The spear-shaped graphic elements on the front fenders are particularly striking and area throwback to the early days of Porsche motorsports. A further highlight is the Porsche Heritage badge on the rear decklid grille, which is reminiscent of the one that was awarded back in the day when a Porsche 356 reached the 100,000 kilometer mark. four Porsche Heritage Design models. A further connection between past and present is provided by the historical Porsche Crest of 1963 found on the front luggage compartment lid, steering wheel, wheel hub covers, vehicle keys, and embossed on the head restraints and key pouch. The vehicle comes with 20/21-inch Carrera Exclusive Design wheels and the classic-look brake calipers painted in black as standard. The interior also pays tribute to the past: the exclusive twotone leather interior combines Bordeaux Red leather with OLEA club leather in Atacama Beige or Black leather with OLEA club leather in Atacama Beige. The use of corduroy on seats and door trims signals the return of a material previously used in the Porsche 356, reviving the zeitgeist and fashion of the 1950s. nation, underlining the emotive nature of the concept in the same way as the perforated roofliner in microfiber fabric and extensive Exclusive Manufaktur leather trim. A metal badge on the trim panel of the dashboard displays the individual limited edition number. The first Heritage Design model is based on the new 2021 911 Targa 4S of the 992 generation which was just introduced, and is equipped with the latest technologies for chassis, assistance systems and infotainment. It is powered by a 443 hp twin-turbo boxer engine. Combined with the standard eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and Sport Chrono Package, the vehicle can reach a top track speed of 188 mph and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Alternatively, the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition can also be ordered with a seven-speed manual transmission.

The 2021 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition has an MSRP of $180,600, not including a $1,350 delivery, processing and handling fee, and is expected to reach U.S. dealers in late 2020. Along with the introduction of the special edition, certain interior elements will be available as part of the Heritage Design package for all current 911 models. Porsche Design has created a high-quality chronograph, also a limited edition, which will be offered for sale exclusively to customers purchasing the special model. Porsche Heritage Design strategy: re-interpreting classic design elements The Heritage Design models emphasize the “lifestyle” dimension that represents particularly emotive concepts within the Porsche product strategy. Led by the “Style Porsche” design department and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, these models reinterpret iconic 911 models and interiors of the 1950s to 1980s, bringing typical characteristics of heritage cars back to life. The optional Heritage Design package for the 911 Speedster from 2019 intentionally provided an initial preview of this strategy. Porsche will now produce a total of four special edition, limited-production models at certain intervals.

911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition chronograph: the watch to match the car Porsche Design has created a high-quality timepiece available for purchase exclusively for owners of the limited edition model: the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design edition chronograph. This mechanical watch has an elegant and clean design and, just like the car, is limited to 992 units. In many of the details, the designers drew inspiration from the legendary Porsche 356 and iconic Porsche 911 Targa: for example, the design of the face with its white seconds hand and “Phosphorus Green” rings is based on the speedometer and rev counter of the cars. History of the Porsche Targa Porsche introduced the 911 Targa at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 1965. The Targa is neither a cabriolet nor a coupé, neither a hard top nor a saloon, but something completely new: the first safety cabriolet in the world with a fixed safety or roll bar. Driving in the open air can now be enjoyed like never before in open-top cars in a variety of different ways thanks to a removable folding roof and a fold-down plastic rear window: completely closed, fully open or just with the centre roof section removed or the rear window folded down. The Targa concept was the starting signal for a totally different kind of Porsche driving experience and would be featured not only in all future 911 generations, but also subsequently in other cars, such as the 914 or the Carrera GT. Named after the Targa Florio With the new concept, Porsche was responding to increased safety requirements for open-top cars in the American market, countering voices calling for cabriolets to be completely banned in the United States. When deciding on a name for the model, consideration was given to race tracks where Porsche has been particularly successful, quickly leading to Targa Florio – the road race in Sicily where Porsche has enjoyed great motorsport success since the mid 1950s. For a short while, “911 Flori” was under discussion, until Head of Domestic Sales Harald Wagner stumbled on the answer by asking the question: “Why don‘t we just call it Targa?” The Italian term also means “number plate”, but legend has it that this only came to light when the copywriters were working on the sales brochure. In August 1965, Porsche applied for a patent for the Targa concept and from autumn 1966 the Targa supplemented the Coupé for the 911, 911 S and 912 with resounding success. From the late summer of 1967, the Targa models could also be optionally ordered with a fixed and heated rear window made of safety glass in place of the fold-down plastic rear window. A solution that became standard equipment just a year later and which remained a feature of the targa more or less unchanged until 1993.

1950 American LaFrance (ALF) Series 700 Cab Over Pumper Truck
Dennis Hirschbrunner’s family have been fighting fires for more than a century in the country’s heartland. Today, in a 105-year-old building in downtown Columbus, Nebraska, he’s celebrating that personal legacy and everyone who fights fires nationwide. Since its founding in 1856 at the confluence of the Loup and Platte rivers, Columbus has been a shipping center both by water and Union Pacific tracks. With 23,000 inhabitants, the city is 90 miles north of the state capital, Lincoln, and 95 miles west of Omaha, where Union Pacific is based as well as Berkshire Hathaway, founded by city native and resident, Warren Buffet. At the Columbus Area Antique Fire Apparatus Preservation Society (CAAFAPS) museum, Hirschbrunner curates eight antique fire trucks and a 1935 4-door Chevy Sedan, which serves as the collection’s fire chief’s and parade car. The trucks represent Columbus, the four surrounding communities of Bellwood, Duncan, Lindsey and Silver Creek and the cities of Snyder, Texas, and Longmeadow, Massachusetts. “The collection represents some of the early fire-fighting apparatus to serve their respective communities,” Hirschbrunner says. “Some were in service for as many as 60 years before being retired, and some provided mutual aid to neighboring communities on major fires. They all run and are drivable.”

A Family FD Affair His grandfather was a founder and charter member of the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department. “I have a proclamation from the city that recognizes his contribution and membership. The proclamation grants him exemption from jury duty,” he explains. And, Hirschbrunner’s father served in the department from the ’40s through the ’60s. He was in the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Company and was chief instructor in the ’60s. His brother also served in the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Company in the ’70s and ’80s and was fire chief in the late ’70s and early ’80s. “So I have three generations of family that have served in the Columbus Fire Department. It’s in the blood!” he says, noting that his business career did not allow him to continue the firefighting legacy. But, for his part, the museum does that. The collection has five Pumper Trucks: a 1950 American LaFrance Series 700 (owned by the city of Columbus); a 1947 International (donated by village of Duncan); 1949 Ford (donated, village of Lindsey); 1951 Ford (donated, village of Bellwood); and a 1929 Model A Ford (donated, village of Silver Creek). In addition, the museum has a 1956 Maxim Quint 65foot Aerial Ladder Truck; 1957 American LaFrance; 100-foot Aerial Ladder Truck; and a 1962 International 75-foot Snorkel.

“All but one of the trucks served their respective communities from purchase until retirement from service there,” he explains. “The exception is the 1957 ALF Ladder Truck from Snyder, Texas, which was purchased from a used-car dealer in Fort Worth and transported by tractor trailer to Columbus.” Historic Garage at the ‘Crossroads of the Nation’ The 8,000-square-foot masonry museum building, at the northwest intersection of 13th Street and 23rd Avenue in downtown, opened in 1915 as a garage and service station owned by The Lincoln Highway Garage Association. “The building was used by automobile travelers as a way station to service their vehicles as well as a restroom stop,” Hirschbrunner explains. “In fact, one of the advertisements for the garage was ‘Clean Restrooms for Women.’” In 1913, the old Mormon Trail became the Lincoln Highway, U.S. Highway 30, the first transcontinental highway, connecting New York and San Francisco. This preceded the opening of America’s “Mother Road,” Route 66, by more than a decade. A few blocks from the museum, The Lincoln Highway connects with the Meridian Highway, U.S. 81, making Columbus the

“crossroads of the nation.” The north/south-aligned Meridian connects Winnipeg, Canada, and Galveston, Texas. About 1930, the garage was sold to Ed M. Nielsen, becoming a Chevrolet and GMC car dealership and service garage for 74 years. Jim Ernst and his family were the next owners, making it a Chevy, Buick and GMC dealership and service garage. Artist/sculpture Fred Hoppe then acquired the building for an art studio and storage facility. Hirschbrunner purchased the property in 2016, immediately beginning the conversion to the fire truck museum; he donated it in 2018 to The Columbus Area Antique Fire Apparatus Preservation Society, a 501(c)3 nonprofit. The building is a strong candidate for the National Historic Register, he says, noting that preparations are also underway to renovate the building into a functioning museum, portrayed as an operating fire station. Hirschbrunner’s plan is to do an appointment-only opening this fall when the renovation is completed. “We are going to return the outside walls to the original rust brick color, repair the sidewalks, replace the overhead doors with replica carriage house overhead doors and add exterior windows and pedestrian entrance doors.”

Seven Fire Trucks and a Car for the Chief •1929 Ford Model A Chemical Truck –– The most recent addition to the museum, this 4-cylinder gas-powered was the first motorized fire truck to serve the village of Silver Creek. Built by the Boyer Manufacturing Company on a 1929 Ford Model A chassis, the nonagenarian was displayed at the Nebraska State Fire Museum in Kearney, Nebraska, before arriving in Columbus, Hirschbrunner says.
1935 4-door Chevrolet Sedan (Fire Chiefs Car)
•1935 4-door Chevrolet Sedan (Fire Chiefs Car) –– Kermit Wagner, a businessman, bought this 6-cylinder in nearby Schuyler, Nebraska. William Simpson, president of Dale Electronics in Columbus, later bought it. A Shriner, Simpson loaned it to the Columbus Pawnee Shrine Club for use as a clown car for many years. With the demise of the clown group, it returned to Simpson. When Simpson died, his son Bill stored it in a shed for many years. Hirschbrunner purchased the car from him in 2015. As the Shriner Clown Car, it was red, green and yellow, but he repainted it red with black fenders and added a combination red light and siren to the right front fender. Still with the original upholstery, the car is only driven in parades. It has 43,000 total miles. •1947 International Pumper –– This 6-cylinder truck is on loan to the museum from the village of Duncan, where it served form 1947 until its replacement in 1968. “Not only did it serve the local community but also provided mutual aid to the city of Columbus on several major fires during its 20 years of service,” Hirschbrunner says, noting that it was a backup until being fully retired in 1986.
1956 Maxim Quint 65' Aerial Ladder Truck
•1949 Ford Pumper Truck –– Loaned by the village of Lindsey, the 6-cylinder became the main response truck for the village from 1949 until the late 1960s. It replaced the first motorized truck that the fire department owned. •1950 American LaFrance (ALF) Series 700 Cab Over Pumper Truck –– The collection started in 2013 with the purchase of this ALF. Originally, the truck had a 12-cylinder gas engine; in 1972, the current Detroit diesel was installed, with pumping capacity to 2,000 gpm. The Columbus Fire Department placed it for auction after it was retired from service and no storage facilities were available, Hirschbrunner explains. “The truck was slated for the scrap heap, but my sculptor friend Fred Hoppe and I partnered to outbid the scrap dealers and preserve this wonderful piece of historic fire equipment that served the city for over 60 years.”

•1951 Ford Pumper Truck –– This 6-cylinder replaced Bellwood’s first motorized truck in 1951, serving the village as its front-line truck for 20-plus years. “The Bellwood Fire Department fully restored another truck, its original one, which it keeps at their fire station for parades,” he says.

•1956 Maxim Quint 65’ Aerial Ladder Truck –– The 1956 Maxim Quint Truck was purchased from a collection in Charlottesville, Virginia, and transported by tractor trailer to Columbus. The 12-cylinder once served the community of Longmeadow, Massachusetts. •1957 American LaFrance (ALF) 100’ Aerial Ladder Truck –– The second truck acquired for the collection came through Facebook at a car dealership in Fort Worth, Texas. Hirschbrunner’s son-in-law, a professional firefighter in Denton, Texas, checked out the diesel-powered truck, which had served the town of Snyder, Texas. •1962 International 75’ Snorkel Truck, Columbus, Nebraska –– Manufactured by the Snorkel Company in Missouri, this truck was purchased in 1962 by the city to replace the 1935 Seagrave Pioneer Hook and Ladder Truck. Tom Krumland, formerly of Columbus, purchased the truck from the fire department and moved it for restoration to Roswell where he owns a car dealership. Tom’s father and older brother, Gary, both served in the Columbus volunteer fire department. Krumland was not able to restore the truck, and he donated it to the CAAFAPS museum in 2017, transporting it back to Columbus by flatbed truck that year.

In 1962, when the truck was purchased and placed into service in Columbus, Hirschbrunner’s father, Charles, trained the Pioneer Hook and Ladder Company personnel on its use. “This truck was the first piece of equipment in the department that allowed the firefighters to get above the building on fire,” he says. “This enabled them to more effectively fight major building fires and protect adjoining buildings.” The International served Columbus for 40-plus years before being replaced by a more traditional aerial ladder truck in the early 2000s. It responded to many major building fires, including mutual aid calls to communities as far as 25 miles away. “Its value was never more evident than at the Brenner Furniture Store fire in March 1979 on the main street of Columbus,” Hirschbrunner recalls. “The truck was credited with preventing the entire block from being destroyed.” Until the museum opens with a full schedule, call Dennis Hirschbrunner to arrange a tour when you’re in the Columbus area: 402.639.1720. Native Son, National Hero General Dwight Eisenhower, later U.S. president, called Andrew Jackson Higgins (1886–1952) “the man who won the war for us . . .” Born to parents who had settled in Columbus in the 1870s, Higgins moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Higgins Industries produced 20,094 of his superb landing craft during WWII. With these shallow-draft Higgins Boats, men and equipment were safely transported to beaches during amphibious landings in that war and later in Korea and Vietnam. Higgins’ experience with the shallow rivers in the Columbus area gave him a vision for the history-changing boat, explains Katy McNeil, director of the Columbus/Platte County Convention and Visitors Bureau. About a mile and a quarter southwest of the museum in West Pawnee Park is The Higgins Memorial, which includes a full-size replica of the Higgins Boat and three bronze sculptures by Fred Hoppe, depicting soldiers from the three wars. Around the boat are sand samples from the landing beaches where the boats brought soldiers ashore. Dedicated in 2001, The Higgins Memorial also features a number of flags; the tallest honors U.S. POWs/MIAs. Flags of Nebraska and Louisiana, states where Higgins lived, are also displayed. Here, too, are flags of the remaining 48 states and seven U.S. territories. The American Legion, VFW and six service flags representing the Army, Navy, Marines, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard and the Air Force are also flown. Made of Wisconsin stone, the Memorial Wall is 8 by 94 feet and surrounds 1,000 donor bricks and ten benches honoring veterans, families, businesses and other donors. In 2002, two octagonal structures with 960 bricks were installed, and a curved wall with 1,000 engraved bricks was added. The historical marker to the right of the wall displays Higgins’ biography. Columbus High School teacher Jerry Meyer and his students wanted to honor Higgins and all veterans; their research project became a memorial with the assist of 20,000-plus community members. In addition, to celebrate his industrial spirit, a section of State Highway 81 south of Columbus has been renamed the Andrew Higgins Expressway. The Memorial was expanded after 9/11 in 2004 to honor those who were killed in the terrorist attacks. Atop a 30-foot steel beam, saved from the World Trade Center towers, a 400-pound bronze eagle with 7-foot wings has been sculpted by Hoppe.
