The first of a limited run of 15 examples of the Pikes Peak Continental GT by Mulliner has been built at Bentley’s carbon neutral factory in Crewe, England. The Limited Edition model features exclusive Radium by Mulliner paintwork, carbon fibre body kit, Acid Green brake disc callipers, and Pirelli P Zero Colour Edition Tyres. 35 per cent of allocated vehicles also include the optional mountain decal, the same as the record holding vehicle. Detailing on the interior consists of an Alcantara interior complemented by distinctive Radium contrast stitching and accents, carbon fibre fascias and waistrails including a Pikes Peak Overlay on the passenger fascia, and exclusive B&O speaker covers in Black Anodised and Radium finish. Peter Bosch, Member of the Board for Manufacturing, comments: “Bentley has always built cars that are a magical combination of bespoke craftsmanship and everyday usability. With Mulliner, we have increased the boundaries of our production system through bespoke highly personalised products and small series limited editions. “With collaborative and seamless integration into our state-of-the art manufacturing operations, we deliver the exclusivity and bespoke customer individualisation expected from a Mulliner product and at the same time adhere to Bentley’s highest quality and reliability standards. I believe that a significant part of this success is due to the skilled and adaptable workforce based here at Crewe, responding to personal and small series commissions, a great example being the Continental GT Number 9 Edition, which debuted as part of Bentleys Centenary celebrations at Geneva Motorshow in 2019.” Celebrating the record-breaking run of a standard Continental GT at the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb last year, where the production car record was bettered by eight seconds, the Pikes Peak Continental GT is a striking limited edition created by Bentley Mulliner as part of the division’s new ‘Collections’ portfolio. With all 15 vehicles allocated, customer deliveries of this special iteration of the Continental GT are due to begin in September, destined across the globe from New Zealand to America. Each one honouring Bentley’s accomplishment at the most demanding hill climb in the world, where Bentley achieved the record for fastest production SUV in 2018 and production car in 2019. The world’s finest Grand Tourer shaved an impressive 8.4 seconds off the previous record along the 12.42-mile course in Colorado, making it the fastest production car ever at Pikes Peak. Driven by three-time champion, former ‘King of the Mountain’ Rhys Millen, the W12-powered Continental GT climbed almost 5,000 ft through 156 bends in just 10 minutes, 18.4 seconds.

A Striking Limited Edition The new Limited Edition is distinguished by a carbon fibre body kit and eye-catching Radium by Mulliner paintwork, mirroring the colour scheme used on the record-breaking car. Gloss black detailing has also been added to the front lower bumper inserts, roof panel, wing mirrors and rear surfaces. The passenger-side fascia features a graphic showing a section of the Pikes Peak track, with five different graphics being used across the 15-car run, along with the record-setting time of 10:18.488. Pikes Peak embroidery to the seat headrests in Radium stitching, Radium contrast binding on the overmats, Pikes Peak treadplates and exclusive B&O speaker covers in Black Anodised and Radium finish further enhance the interior appeal. The Continental GT’s luxurious cabin includes the ground-breaking Bentley Rotating Display, deep pile overmats and Front Seat Comfort Specification. Like the Continental GT that broke the Pikes Peak record last year, this new model features the world’s most advanced 12cylinder petrol engine in the twin-turbocharged Bentley W12. Last century, his grandfather, Bob Adams Sr., sold classics such as Duesenberg’s and Caddy’s and owned an American Motors dealership. His dad, fellow Scottsdale resident, Bob Adams Jr., also sold cars and restored as many as 10 classic Kaiser Darrins. “Think of us at The Used Car Club as your family in the car business,” Bobby says. For those who need to sell quickly, The Used Car Club will buy your car today. “We give you the experience of getting fair market value for your vehicle without the usual headaches of selling it yourself,” explains Adams. “Give us the last look. If we can't beat another dealer’s written offer, we will send you a $100 check.” An option –– for those who have more time and want to maximize their return –– is the Car Club’s Consignment program. “We professionally market, represent and sell your car for you,” he says, noting that the company’s consignment fee is the lowest in the industry with the most return value. This includes the use of social media to make sure you receive full retail, or more, for your car,” he says. His group also uses vlogging, podcasting, and other collaborative methods to ensure success. And, in the future, Adams plans to expand The Used Car Club as a national platform and increase his onsite experience to a 100,000-square-foot used car supercenter. For consignors, patience can equal thousands more in your final check. “By waiting a little longer you might get another $10 thousand for your Bentley or $2 thousand for your Honda,” he says. Buyers always see fresh high-quality inventory at the warehouse. “We buy mostly from private-party owners and not the dealer auctions as most do,” he says. “A wide range of financing can be arranged, and we even take trades, too. Building on the formidable sporting style and aggressive performance of the regular Vantage, the new car features unique exterior styling treatments led by a bespoke mesh grille with chrome bezel that references the look of the brand’s classic V8. Further styling details include a dashed yellow diffuser inspired by the hazard stripes on the film car’s rockets. The Vantage 007 Edition can even be delivered with a set of The Living Daylights inspired limited edition skis and ski rack – referencing the ‘winterised’ V8 saloon from the film.
The seats themselves feature unique heritage fluting reminiscent of that seen in the V8, along with carbon fibre seat backs and, in a particularly detailed nod to the 1980s film, the outline of cello ‘f holes’ inspired by the memorable cello chase scene featuring James Bond (Timothy Dalton) and Kara Milovy (Maryam D’Abo).
The car will be delivered in authentic Cumberland Grey exterior paint colour, whilst the interior will be presented in obsidian black leather and dark chrome with 007 branding applied on the centre console of cars equipped with a manual gearbox. The sun visors of all the cars will carry another subtle film reference in the shape of an embroidered radio station frequency – 96.60 (FM) – which 007 buffs will know

The driver can indulge themselves further with a laseretched gadget plaque that references the various weapons and devices seen on the original film car. These included a rocket motor, missiles, lasers, a targeting display and ski outriggers. Hot for rare classics? Check your anti-freeze and motor north to Alaska. Hosting 30,000 visitors a year, the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum in Fairbanks is three museums: pre-WWII American-made vehicles, including four one-offs; vintage fashions; and artifacts and documents celebrating the pioneering automotive spirit of the 49th state. The museum’s 102 cars include horseless carriages, roadsters and racers, beginning with a 1898 Hay Motor Vehicle Stanhope Phaeton through a 1917 Owen Magnetic, 1934 Packard 1408 Series dual windshield touring Phaeton and, the youngest car, a 1938 Southwest Chrome Special Elto Midget Racer. Other rare automobiles include a 1906 Compound, the one remaining 1920 Argonne, 1921 Heine-Velox Victoria and a 1905 Sheldon by Robert Sheldon, the first and only car manufactured in Alaska. “Some of our cars have won best in their class at premier shows around the country,” says Willy Vinton, the museum manager and long-time car lover. He notes that all but three are operable, and many are regularly driven as weather permits –– especially during the summer at the 105-acre Wedgewood Resort. Volume XVII, Number 08
Just three miles from downtown on 105 acres, the all-suite hotel is next to Creamer’s Field Waterfowl Refuge, the Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary and Refuge, both with trails, and Activity Island, including outdoor exhibits about life in interior Alaska. Antique bicycles and vintage clothing to the 1740s are also shown, about 1,000 clothing items, the largest collection of vintage apparel in the Northwest, says Vinton. “It’s a stunning illustration of fashion design stories and, like the cars, the elegant outfits are rotated periodically throughout the building, which keeps the museum fresh and interesting.” Celebrating Alaska’s unique motoring history are large photos with write-ups of the historical significance of the photo. The museum also offers a book about transportation in Alaska, informative videos and an outdoor display of unrestored items depicting the state’s story. In 2007, museum founder Tim Cerny purchased much of the J. Parker Wickham automobile collection. The following spring, his Fountainhead Development broke ground for the new museum. In the interim, Cerny and his colleagues researched and acquired more cars throughout North America and Europe.

And, our Sheldon, Heine-Velox Victoria and Hay are the only models of their kind ever built.”
Creator Walter Hay thought that his eight-cycle engine would provide two full revolutions for cooling and purifying the cylinders. On every fourth turn, a firing stroke would occur in each cylinder. Around each cylinder are aircooled radiating fans; no water cooling is used. Hay also said that the car could run without oil.
A Hay, a Hertel and a Cord •1898 Hay Stanhope Phaeton –– Featuring meticulous horseless-carriage coachwork, this one-off car was discovered in a barn in the 1940s, near New Haven, Connecticut, where it was built by the short-lived Hay & Hotchkiss Company. The museum purchased the car in 2007 and took two years restoring it. Excepting the tires, every part was handcrafted for this lone prototype. “We believe it’s the earliest known American-made fourcylinder gasoline-powered automobile in existence, and the fact that’s it’s an eight-cycle engine makes it that much

But, “The Hay did not make it into production because a few short runs revealed the shortcomings of the eightcycle concept,” says Vinton. •1899 Hertel Runabout –– With components such as hand-forged suspension ironwork, this is one of three Hertels known to exist. This 19th-century pioneer, one of America’s earliest gasoline-powered cars, was manufactured by the Oakman Motor Vehicle Company in Greenfield, Massachusetts. A stellar example of the transition from bicycles to automobiles, the car features front wheels mounted to bicycle forks. The car is steered with a tiller, and a lever controls the starter, forward gear, throttle and brakes.

The Hertel does not have belts, chains or gears. “Instead, the motor drives friction pulleys which rotate against the inner rims of the rear wheels, so this is the first American automobile to have the engine in the rear,” explains Vinton. The 2-cylinder, 2-speed car weighs 500 pounds and can do 20 mph. The factory called it “free from odor” and “practically noiseless.” Price: $750. Four-wheel independent suspension was also innovative, providing the Hertel, the manufacturer boasted, “an air of strength and durability.” •1905 Model B 6-Passenger Touring Winton –– This is the only Model B known to exist. Its four-cylinder vertical engine produces about 25–30 horsepower; altogether it weighs 2,100 pounds. Two years earlier, in 1903, Dr. Horatio Nelson, his mechanic Sewall Crocker and a dog named Bud had become the first to drive from San Francisco to Manhattan in a Winton. The arduous trek took 63 and a half days over roads that weren’t. The Winton-patented air-pressure system controls the speed. When the car is started, the air intake and fuel are minimized to maintain idle; as the driver initiates

throttle, a waste gate allows the intake valves to open for the additional power. The car maker claimed the transmission was “unbreakable”; for servicing, the owner could access it through the foot board of the front seat. In turn, the engine could be easily worked on by opening the hood. “‘Unbreakable’ it wasn’t, but the Winton was easier to repair than many other vehicles of the time,” Vinton says, “and because roads were poor where they existed, this car was particularly attractive.” Base price was $2,500, which attracted only the moderately well off. •1905 Sheldon –– Robert ‘Bobby’ Sheldon was taken with a young lady living in Skagway, but her rival suitor had a horse and a fancy carriage. Sheldon muttered, “I had to figure out a way to beat that (darn) horse.” Sheldon, 22, had never seen an automobile before, but he was intent on having one, one way or the other, and winning the woman. The museum describes his innovative procedure: “He built a wooden frame and axles, salvaged wheels and full

elliptic springs from a discarded wagon, made a tin hood, added two barstools for seats, created a steering tiller from a gas pipe, attached two carbide miner’s lamps for headlights and ordered a brass bulb horn from Sears & Roebuck.” The engine: marine, one cylinder. Sheldon snagged it from a sunken boat. He connected it between the front wheels and ran two bicycle chains to the rear wheels so that he could beat the horse, the rival suitor and visit his gal. “It really worked,” Sheldon said. “She went with me on many rides.” •1906 Type XV Pope Toledo –– They called the first car in Fairbanks a “Devil Wagon,” “Road Monster” and “Carmine Demon.” The fiendish car arrived from the Pope Motor Car Company of Toledo, Ohio, in August 1908 for

David Laiti, owner of the Fairbanks Flume Hose Factory. Laiti transported passengers to Fox, just north, in 80 minutes, with one terrified passenger exclaiming that the “Red Devil” did 50 mph! The owner of the local barber shop, Dave Courtemanche, bought it from him and started a taxi service to Chatanika, also north of Fairbanks. Robert Sheldon bought another of the town’s PopeToledos –– a 1907 Type XV, shipped from Dawson City in 1909. He hired out to drive people around town, to Ester and the Valdez Trail. An October 1911 newspaper article recounted how he drove some young ladies out to Noyes Slough where they “spent an hour on the ice.” In 1913, the Tanana Valley Railroad purchased the car and converted it to a railcar. •1923 Mercury Model T Speedster –– Here’s an example

of one of America’s first hot-rods, a “speed-buggied” “Tin Lizzie,” the car that Henry Ford built for the masses. Some of those masses, though, wanted to go faster. With after-market components, they could work the engine, build a new body or “soup” the engine. The best kits were from The Mercury Body Company, which offered them for the Model T and the Chevrolet Superior. Vinton: “The kit gave the speedster a dropped axle, radiator, hood, step plates and cycle fenders and added 10 to 15 mph to your car. You also had to buy new rear brakes for the ‘whoa’ you needed for your new thoroughbred.”

This car is one of the 70 original Mercury speedsters known. •1931 Cord L29 Cabriolet –– America’s first production front-wheel drive car, the L29 is considered one of the most beautiful cars ever, to a great extent because of the design opportunities from the lack of conventional rear-wheeldrive structures.
1934 Packard Phaeton
The front-wheel drive also helped create the low racy look by lowering the car 10 inches than other rear-wheel-drive cars requiring a central drive shaft. The long hood covers the engine, clutch and transmission and differential. The almost 300-cid Lycoming 8-cylinder produces 125 horses and propels the 4,500-pound car up to 76 mph. Only 1,243 were produced for those who could pay the $2,495 sticker price to the Auburn Automobile Company in Auburn, Indiana. This magnificent survivor has only 14,000 original miles.

Porsche Launches New SingleVehicle Option as Subscription Programs Expand to Los Angeles “Porsche Drive� is the new brand umbrella for monthly and short-term mobility access With an increased focus on consumer choice in an age of new mobility models, Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) today introduced a monthly Single-Vehicle Subscription (SVS) program in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Phoenix, and San Diego. This program offers members access to a single Porsche model for one or three months, for an all-inclusive fee, starting September 25. The new option coincides with the expansion of its existing monthly Multi-Vehicle Subscription and Rental programs to Los Angeles, the largest city yet to host the programs. Porsche is forging ahead with Multi-Vehicle Subscription after the initial experience has shown it reaches new audiences for the brand. In all existing markets, 80 percent of participants have been new to Porsche, many are younger than the average age for current Porsche buyers or lessees, and more than a third enroll for at least four months. Adding a single-vehicle option reflects a preference among some members to stay in one model instead of switching vehicles. Starting September 25, Angelinos will be able to choose from a variety of current Porsche model variants, including the new Cayenne Coupe, for shorter-term vehicle access than a traditional lease or purchase. To sign up, individuals can download the Porsche Drive app available on Apple and Android devices to apply for membership.

What had been the monthly subscription program Porsche Passport will now be Porsche Drive – Multi-Vehicle Subscription, and the shorter-term offering will be Porsche Drive – Rental. Similarly, the new monthly subscription program with access to one vehicle will be Porsche Drive – Single-Vehicle Subscription. “If California were a country, it would be our fifth-largest market in the world. After bringing Porsche Drive to San Diego last summer, Los Angeles was an obvious choice to allow customers to experience a variety of Porsche sports cars and SUVs at the touch of an app. Now, in addition to our Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles track, LA residents or those visiting LA have another way to enjoy a Porsche,” said Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of PCNA. All Drive programs include deep cleaning of cars between users and social distancing at delivery and pick-up, as well as other measures to protect the safety of customers and staff. •Porsche Drive – Single-Vehicle Subscription grants members access to a single Porsche model for one or three months, with concierge delivery and pick-up within the delivery area. When signing up for the program, members can choose from a variety of current model variants for their monthly subscription. After the initial subscription period, members can extend their membership in the existing model or choose a new vehicle. With the exception of fuel, all operating costs including vehicle maintenance and insurance are a part of the flat monthly fee (+ taxes and fees) that varies depending on model variant. •Porsche Drive – Multi-Vehicle Subscription is a monthly program that offers members unlimited vehicle swaps at the touch of an app. Cars are delivered and picked up by a concierge anywhere a customer chooses within the delivery area. With the exception of fuel, all operating costs including vehicle maintenance and insurance are a part of the flat monthly fee – $2,100 (+ taxes and fees) for the “Launch” membership that includes a variety of current model variants and $3,100 (+ taxes and fees) for the “Accelerate” level that adds higher-performing variants of other models to the menu, including the iconic 911. •Porsche Drive – Rental offers shorter commitments than a month, such as weekend getaways, date nights, or vacations. It is also app-based, with daily and weekly usage options. Customers retrieve vehicles from the participating dealership, and upon the completion of the rental, a concierge will pick up the vehicle within the delivery area or the vehicle can be returned to the participating dealership.
