MASERATI CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY OF THE “ELDORADO”
Some cars have gone down in history for legendary wins, for the innovations they introduced or for the drivers who piloted them to glory. Others, meanwhile, have become veritable icons for what they represented: a unique story; a turning point in history; a social phenomenon; an event that rippled beyond the stands of the race track to ultimately define an era. One such case was the Maserati “Eldorado”, which became famous in 1958 as the first singleseater car in Europe to be sponsored by a brand not linked to the world of motorsport. The brand in question was Eldorado, an ice-cream manufacturer. This was the first example of modern sponsorship, where the car was painted in the colours of the partner company, abandoning the traditional colour assigned to each country by the International Federation. This was a real revolution for the day, of vital importance to the future of motorsport, which from that moment on opened its doors to new financial backers. Maserati was commissioned to build the car by Gino Zanetti, owner of the Eldorado ice-cream company. Determined to promote his brand on the international stage, Zanetti turned to the House of the Trident to create a single-seater car to compete in the “Trofeo dei due Mondi” (Race of Two Worlds) at Monza: the Automobile Club d'Italia had organised a 500 Mile race at the circuit based on the Indianapolis 500, with top American drivers lining up alongside Europe’s cream of the crop. The Maserati 420/M/58, chassis number 4203, was thus finished with a cream coloured livery, instead of Italian racing red. The name Eldorado was emblazoned in bold black lettering along the sides of the car, with two additional smaller logos on the nose and below the small deflector that acted as a windshield. The logo with the face of the smiling cowboy was positioned in the centre of the nose and on the sides of the rear fin.

Below the two Eldorado brands on the sides, in bright racing red was “Italia”, denoting the nationality of the sponsor as well as that of the racing car manufacturer. The long silhouette of the “Eldorado” also bore the name of the driver chosen to race it in the “Monzanapolis”: Stirling Moss, one of the greatest drivers in the history of motor sports, and a former Maserati driver. The previous year, in 1957, the Modena-based manufacturer had won the Formula 1 World Championship with Juan Manuel Fangio, before deciding to withdraw from competitive racing and build racing cars on commission only for private customers, also providing them with assistance. This was precisely the ideal situation that Zanetti was seeking, and the reason why the Italian entrepreneur turned to Maserati. In the space of a few months, the engineer Giulio Alfieri created the “Eldorado”. The engine, derived from the V8 unit mounted in the 450S twin cam models, had its displacement reduced to 4,190 cc, generating 410 hp at 8,000 rpm; both the engine and transmission were offset to the left by nine centimetres. The aim of this decision was to ensure a more balanced weight distribution, taking into account the anti-clockwise direction of travel on the high banked corners at Monza. The gearbox had just two speeds while the De Dion rear axle had no differential. The tubular chassis was derived from that of the highly successful 250F, although it proved oversized compared to the latter, also as a result of numerous reinforcements introduced to enable the car to withstand the mechanical stress generated by the concrete track at Monza. To reduce the weight, Halibrand magnesium wheels were used along with Firestone 18-inch braided tread tyres inflated with helium. With these measures, the car weighed in at 1,671 lbs. The aluminium bodywork, hand crafted by Fantuzzi, was characterised by an aerodynamic

vertical fin behind the cockpit and a front carburetor scoop. On 29th June 1958, at the Monza track, the race was held in three heats to decide the final points table. This strategy was aimed at enticing European car manufacturers to enter their own cars, which had not originally been designed to compete in such a long race, and one that was so mechanically arduous. In the first heat Moss finished 4th. In the second he crossed the line 5th. In the final heat, however, his steering broke and the Maserati slammed into the guard-rail, dashing the English driver’s hopes of finishing the race in third place overall. Taking into account the three heats and the total number of laps completed, Moss nonetheless took seventh place in the end. He walked away unscathed from the crash and, all things considered, the “Eldorado” too suffered only limited damage, proving the value of its solid structure. Despite the success in terms of spectator numbers and entertainment value, the 500 Miles of Monza did not become a regular event on the racing calendar. Based on the findings from the race, the “Eldorado” was modified by the Gentilini bodywork shop, which removed the rear fin and reduced the

hood scoop, after which the car was entered in the Indianapolis 500 in 1959. This time it was finished in red, the colour denoting Italy in competitions, but still emblazoned with the Eldorado sponsor’s name in white lettering on the sides, as well as the cowboy logo in a white circle on the nose and tail. The inexperience of the gentleman-driver, Ralph Liguori, meant that the car failed to qualify, as it set the 36th fastest time, with only the first 33 qualifying. With a professional driver behind the wheel, it would have been a very different result. But that is a whole other story. The Indy 500 race was dear to Maserati, which took victory in 1939 and 1940 with the driver Wilbur Shaw behind the wheel of an 8CTF. Shaw almost made it a hat-track in 1941, but was forced to withdraw during the penultimate lap while out in front, victory denied by a broken wheel. Maserati is the only Italian car manufacturer to have won on the Indiana race track and the only European brand to have triumphed on two consecutive occasions. The Maserati “Eldorado”, perfectly restored in its original white livery, is part of the Panini Collection, housed in Modena.

Even though officially withdrawn from racing, Maserati was commissioned by ice cream company Eldorado Sud in 1958 for a car to compete in the second edition of the Race of Two Worlds. This 500-mile race was organised in an attempt to bring the European and American racing cultures together again, and the renewed Monza track with its highspeed oval was the ideal location for the event that hosted American single-seaters in Europe. Maserati purpose-built the 420M/58, often simply called the Eldorado after its sponsor, for this race. The engine was derived from the unit used in the 450S sports car, with its capacity reduced to 4.2 litres to meet the Indycar technical regulations. Equipped with four twin-choke Webers, it produced so much power and torque that a two-speed gearbox sufficed; first gear was only used to take off from the pits. The final drive was solid and the typical Borrani wire wheels where replaced by Hallibrand alloys to cope with the high cornering forces typical of oval racing. The Eldorado used a modified version
of the 250F chassis, in which the engine was offset to the left to improve balance when driving on a banking. A vertical stabilising fin was added, no luxury given its top speed of more than 222 mph. Maserati’s former works driver Stirling Moss was signed up for the job, and even though the Americans had again the upper hand, he proved to be the quickest of the European entries. Unfortunately, the steering broke at 155 mph and Moss was lucky to walk away unhurt from what he later described as the scariest motor racing accident of his career. The damaged car was rebuilt in the view of entering it in the 1959 Indy 500 race. Its body was modified and finished in red but still sporting the Eldorado sponsoring. The car was shipped to the U.S.A. and entered privately by Eldorado Racing. Sadly, problems related to fuel pick-up prevented it from qualifying for the race. The car was later fully restored to its original condition and is today part of the Umberto Panini Collection.

Brown Six extraordinary motorcars –– a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, 1948 Talbot-Lago, three pre-war Bentleys and a 1911 Mercedes — lead 100plus classics into Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction, August 24, during the annual Pebble Beach/ Monterey Peninsula Car Week. The longest continuous auction on the Monterey Peninsula, the 21st annual event will be held on the western lawns of the Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel, in conjunction with The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering 2018. The automobilia sale begins at 9 a.m., and the cars go on block at 11 a.m. Preview days are Wednesday and Thursday, August 22–23, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. One of the great sports cars, the Pinin Farinadesigned 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta (Chassis number 3337GT) is a documented, matching numbers, Ferrari Classiche-certified car with original coachwork by the great Scaglietti. Multi-award winning, the 250 GT, for example, was named Best Roadcar, with a perfect 100-point title, from the Ferrari Club of America International Meet. The 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Record Sport has coachwork by the great house of Saoutchik. Featured at the 1950 Paris Motor Show, the car also received the prestigious Grand Prix du Salon. Almost no one knew where this Talbot-Lago was for a quarter of a century until Nevada collector Bob Lee found and purchased it. The present owner gave the classic a no-expense-spared professional restoration to its original condition. One of three built and the only survivor, the 1931 Bentley 8-Liter Saloon has the all-aluminum

factory coachwork by the celebrated Vanden Plas. Two 1928 Bentleys include a 6 ½ -Liter Open Sports Tourer by Barker and a 4 ½-Liter Open Tourer by Vanden Plas, an example of the model that won the company its second Le Mans victory and set the fastest lap in 1928. The Brass Era 1911 Mercedes 28/60 Tourer has undergone a fully documented, historically accurate concours-level restoration. The pioneering German motorcar has been campaigned in numerous longdistance rallies, maintaining cruising speeds of more than 60 mph. Other cars include a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289, recently restored with the original body and drivetrain; and a Pininfarina-designed 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, Ferrari Classiche Certified with matching numbers and original Scaglietti coachwork. “This year for our renowned Quail Lodge sale we have some very special machines consigned that reflect our core strengths and will appeal to global collectors of all levels and interests,” says Jakob Greisen, Bonhams vice president and head of US Motoring. SIXTH ANNUAL CARMEL MISSION CLASSIC IS AUGUST 22 by David M. Brown Chris Cord will appear with a 1937 812 Cabriolet manufactured by his grandfather, E.L. Cord, and Phil Hill’s 1927 Packard will be shown at this year’s Carmel Mission Classic, Wednesday, August 22. More than 1,000 car lovers are expected to attend the sixth annual event, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the historic Carmel Mission Basilica, 3080 Rio Road in Carmel. Approximately 50 cars and 10 motorcycles cars will to be shown. The early missionary to the area, Father Junípero Serra, is buried on the church grounds; he was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. All of the net proceeds assist the charities of the Knights of Columbus and the Carmel Mission. Packard will be the featured marque, including the 1927 Packard 343 Convertible Sedan, restored and once owned by the great driver; this is presented by the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, which maintains a stellar collection of classic autos at its downtown campus. Another Packard, a 1925 truck built exclusively for use in the company’s factory, will be presented by its owner, local restaurateur Pat Phinney; his Baja Cantina Grill & Filling Station in Carmel will offer nominally priced food during the day. Other feature cars are a 1909 Franklin, a 2018 Ford GT, 2018 Ferrari 488, and an Enzo and a Pagani from an exotic car collector in Texas. Cord will be hosting a seminar on the history of his family’s great marque, represented by the

1937 812 Cabriolet. Barry Meguiar, star of Car Crazy, will once again be the celebrity master of ceremonies, and guest judges will be Leslie Kendall, chief curator of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, and custom car guru, John D'Agostino. A variety of trophies will be awarded to the owners of the fine automobiles, including Best of Show. A U.S. Marine color guard from the Defense Language Institute will begin the event, and Bishop Sylvester Ryan will offer the annual blessing of the cars. Brown The Ferrari 365 GTB4 Daytona, Lamborghini Espada, Lamborghini Islero, and the Lancia Fulvia are starring at the 33rd Concorso Italiano Saturday, August 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other celebrations include the multi-year Alfa Romeo events in conjunction with Sports Car Market, including the Giulia Super, the Berlina, the Alfetti and the Melano. Approximately 1,000 cars and 8,000 car lovers are expected for the annual “A Celebration of Italian Style” at the Bayonet Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside, California. 10TH MECUM MONTEREY AUCTION IS AUGUST 23–25 by David M. Brown A racing-heritage Porsche, an L88 Corvette and a twin-turbo Pagani Huayra head the docket of approximately 600 cars for the 10th Mecum Monterey Auction, August 23–25, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa, Del Monte Golf Course. Gates open daily at 8 a.m., and the auction begins daily at 10 a.m. The Porsche 550A Spyder is one of 39 built and a three-time winner during the 1958 season with driver Ernst Vogel, also a virtuoso composer and concert pianist. Later, road-racer Harry Blanchard entered it in SCCA regional events along the East Coast. Current owner Steve Terrien found the Stuttgart racer in a warehouse in 1984. And during the last 30 years, the car has received a comprehensive restoration. Fewer than 600 miles of driving has accrued since. The Polar White-on-red-leather 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 is one of 80 produced this year and carries a period-correct 427/430 horsepower aluminum-head big block, Muncie M22 four-speed and 3.70 positraction rear end. Contrary to GM policy, the legendary Chevrolet engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov worked to homologate the car for SCCA A Production and FIA GT competition, but some L88s were acquired by private owners who just wanted this most powerful Corvette in their garages. Named after the Andean wind god, Huayra-Tata, the twin-turbo V-12 2014 Pagani Huayra is number 62 of 100. Its Mercedes-Benz AMG-engineered 720 horses deliver 0–60 sprints of 2.8 seconds and a

top speed of 238 mph through the seven-speed automated manual transmission. The gullwing-designed chariot of the gods is uniquely made of a carbon-titanium composite, “carbotanium,” lighter and stronger than carbon fiber, decreasing weight and increasing structural torsional rigidity. 68TH PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS d’ELEGANCE IS AUGUST 26 by David M. Brown OSCA –– the “giant killer” –– will be a featured class at the 68th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 26. Automobiles and motorcycles will be judged and awarded in 29 classes for historical accuracy, technical merit and style. The world-destination event raises almost $2 million annually for local charities. To date, donations by Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® total more than $25 million. The culmination of Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach Automotive Week, the Concours will welcome thousands of enthusiasts to The Lodge at Pebble Beach™ and 200 of the world’s prized collector cars. The event will showcase 15 cars from OSCA– Fratelli Maserati to tell the story of the Italian marque, which debuted in 1947. Seven years later, an OSCA MT4 1500 Spider won the 12 Hours of Sebring outright by five-plus laps. Owned by Briggs Cunningham and driven by Stirling Moss and Bill Lloyd, the classic racer is now in The Collier Collection at The Revs Institute in Naples, Florida, and exemplifies OSCA’s wining mix: lightweight, reliable, built to win. A legendary 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO –– the third produced –– leads a docket of 150 premier motorcars at RM Sotheby’s flagship Monterey sale, August 24 and 25, held at the newly reopened Monterey Conference Center following a $60million renovation. The auction begins both Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PDT and continues for approximately four to five hours until the day’s run is complete. Public preview dates are Wednesday, August 22, through Thursday, August 23, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. PDT, and Friday, August 24, through Saturday, August 25, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. PDT. It was driven by Lucien Bianchi and Phil Hill at Le Mans, 1963, where it reached 198.6 mph on the Mulsanne Straight. Restored with the consultation of Ted Cutting, the original designer, the unique design project Aston Martin is fitted with its original engine and correct-type five-speed gearbox. A 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II, # P/1016, is the fourth of eight Mark II examples built and was third overall at the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours in Ford’s legendary 1-2-3 sweep, driven by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson; it was also raced and tested by legendary drivers such as Ken Miles, Richie Ginther, A.J. 45TH ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION IS AUGUST 23–26 by David M. Brown The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion returns for its 45th year to the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca August 23–26. Originally known as the Monterey Historics, the four-day event is expected to welcome 70,000 fans, who will enjoy 550 periodcorrect car entries with race provenance and a variety of activities highlighted by the historic races at the famous track just outside of town. The event week begins with Cars on Alvarado Street Friday, August 17, as historic race cars competing drive from the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to downtown Monterey escorted by the California Highway Patrol. The Monterey Pre-Reunion follows August 18–19. Gates open at 7 a.m. daily. Nissan is featured this year –– the first time an Asian automobile manufacturer is the featured marque at the event. Among the models to be showcased is the BRE Datsun 510 that the team of BRE founder and designer Peter Brock and driver John Morton dominated the 1970–1972 National Championships with, establishing Datsun as a racing force. Also appearing is the IMSA GTP championshipwinning GPP driven by Geoff Brabham, who in 1988 won nearly every race (eight consecutively), as he secured the IMSA Manufacturers Championship, and the No. 75 Nissan 300ZX that Steve Millen drove to the 1992 and 1994 Drivers’ Championship titles. Millen will be driving in Race Group 7B, and John Morton and Peter Brock are also planning to attend. Also driving this year at the event is two-time

Formula 1 champion Mika Häkkinen, who will drive the F1 GTR –– McLaren’s 1993 addition to the road car market –– during 15-minute sessions on Friday and Saturday. This will be followed by a question-and-answer session in the paddock. Fifteen classes of cars will compete in the races. One of the most anticipated groups is the vintage Can-Am cars returning to the 2.238-mile road course. Comedian Adam Carolla will be participating in the races as well as showing his collection of former Paul Newman-driven race cars. Notable race drivers attending include Lyn St. James, Tom Long, Joel Miller, Tristan Nunez, Jonathan Bomarito, Gunnar Jeannette and David Donohue. The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) founded WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 1957. After the popular Pebble Beach Road Races that attracted crowds of spectators to the area was judged unsafe, business owners from the area collaborated to build the road course on property leased from Fort Ord. Presented oceanside at Pacific Grove Golf Links, adjacent to the famous 17 Mile Drive at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula, the Pacific Grove Auction starts at 5 p.m. Vehicle preview is Tuesday and Wednesday, August 21 and 22, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Thursday, August 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. One of three Duesy’s offered at the auction, the 1931 retains its original chassis, engine, body and firewall. “Here is a thrilling opportunity to acquire one of the finest and rarest surviving Model Js in existence,” says Rod Egan, principal and auctioneer for Auburn, Indiana-based Worldwide Auctioneers. E-Types, one of the world’s most beautiful cars: a numbers-matching 1968 Jaguar XK E-Type Roadster, one owner from new with all original paperwork including the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin. Judged perfect by the Jaguar Club of North America (JCNA) more than 36 times with 100-point scores, this could be the finest example extant. Another is a complete numbers-matching 1961 Series I Roadster, an extremely rare, flat-floor version with an outside-bonnet latch. The early-production car is from the inaugural model year and has been verified by a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate. A great American sports car is a 1966 Shelby GT350, verified by SAAC Registrar, Howard Pardee, a proven track car in vintage races worldwide with single ownership since 1984. Another Shelby, a 1962 Cobra, one of only 75 first-generation 260 Cobras, has the original engine, transmission and body panels. The 1948 Bob Estes Special Indianapolis Racing Car began the Indy careers of A.J. Watson and Jud Phillips and was photographed in 1950 with Clark Gable at the wheel. Movie fans can also acquire Shirley Temple-Black’s 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300TE Station Wagon, her official state vehicle as a U.S. Ambassador. Monterey Motorsport Park revs up construction just ahead of Car Week As much as there is to do and see during Car Week, it’s not possible to attend every event and activity. But this year, there’s one thing auto enthusiasts absolutely must do while they’re in town — learn more about Monterey Motorsport Park — an upscale garage-condo facility and car community that has just broken ground along Highway 68, adjacent to Monterey Regional Airport. The 86-unit, 90,000 sq. ft. complex with top-ofthe-line garage-condos ranging from around 700 sq. ft. to 2,100 sq. ft. is expected to open in the second quarter of 2019. The facility is designed to meet the needs of small and large collectors alike, as well as track-driving enthusiasts and any individual or business looking for extra space for storage. “There’s a huge demand for this type of facility on the Monterey Peninsula,” said Gordon McCall of McCall Events — co-host of McCall’s Motorworks Revival, the gala that annually kicks off Car Week, and a co-founder of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. McCall is also a member of the Monterey Motorsport Park development team. “If you’re a collector, this complex will provide space that you own — not rent — to safely keep your cherished cars, motorcycles and the memorabilia that goes along with them.” Unique car community Monterey Motorsport Park isn’t your typical storage facility. The design of the individual garage-condos lends itself to the creation of a unique car community. Approximately one-third of the square footage in each unit is allocated to a mezzanine 13 feet above the garage floor — accessible via an interior staircase. These spaces are ideal for a personal office or plush leisure retreat with large-screen TV, wet bar and

comfortable seating area — set above where owners will store their vehicles and other personal or business items and materials. The end result is that owners will hang out at Monterey Motorsport on weekends or race days — enjoying the company of friends or wrenching on their cars.
