Known as “the Picasso of Jazz Piano,” JoAnne Brackeen is consistently ranked by critics and jazz magazines as one of the best jazz pianists in the world, along with Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, and Chick Corea. Her writing is remarkable for its creativity, stylistic range, emotional depth, and whimsical spirit. Her storied career does indeed invite parallels to Picasso; like the great visual artist, she has consistently defied convention, remaking herself and her art many times over. Her playing is virtuosic and wholly unpredictable, dense and richly detailed, rhythmically advanced and consistently, effortlessly swinging.
She now records regularly for the Arkadia label. Her newest quartet outing, Friday: Live at the Jazz Standard, features her working group with Ravi Coltrane on tenor sax, Ira Coleman on bass, and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez on drums. This new, exciting release comes on the heels of the Grammy®-nominated Pink Elephant Magic (1999) and the solo piano tour de force Popsicle Illusion (2000). JoAnne’s next studio session, Pepe’s Favorite Cartoon, features Paquito D’Rivera and represents the next chapter in her continuing fascination with Latin music.n

REBIRTH BRASS BAND JAN 7-10, 8:00PM & 10:30PM JAN 10 ONLY: SPECIAL LATE NIGHT SHOW AT 12:30AM
Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the now infamous Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature
brand of brass funk has won over several generations of music lovers, and in a post-Katrina world, their name and music have become the soundtrack to their musically rich hometown. In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down. n
JOHN PIZZARELLI WITH SPECIAL GUEST JANE MONHEIT JAN 11-12, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
John Pizzarelli, the world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, was called “Hip with a wink” by Town & Country, “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times and “the genial genius of the guitar” by The Toronto Star. When he performs with his wife, singer/actress Jessica Molaskey, and his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, they were labeled “the First Family of Cool” by the San Francisco Chronicle and “the von Trapps on Martinis” by The New YorkerAccording to The New York Times, “the Pizzarelli-Molaskey duo are as good as it gets in any entertainment medium.” After his recent smash success with the Boston Pops, he was hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” And the Seattle Times called him “a tour de force” and “a rare entertainer of the old school.” Before a recent show in the northwest, the local paper quipped “John Pizzarelli is so impossibly cool, he shouldn’t be legally allowed to enter Oregon.” Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James
Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing. “Everything I’m singing now is a reflection of my truest self,” says Jane Monheit. “After all this time in the industry, after touring for 13 years, it’s time to just be me, with complete and utter freedom.” Monheit’s sense of liberation is apparent throughout The Heart Of The Matter, the acclaimed, Grammy-nominated vocalist’s ninth studio album. It can be felt in her wide- ranging choice of material, in the unique arrangements, and in her own fearless performances and interpretations. The diverse and very personal set of songs includes both familiar standards and compositions by Lennon/McCartney, Randy Newman, two songs by Ivan Lins, recorded in the original Portuguese, and, for the first time, a Monheit original. n

GRACE KELLY QUINTET JAN 12
11:30AM & 1:30PM $29.50 includes music, entree & 1 drink
When it comes to singer & saxophonist Grace Kelly, people seem to be divided into two groups: those who marvel at her proficiency & those who have yet to encounter the 21-year-old wunderkind. Trumpeter and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis was so impressed with Kelly’s three-night stand as guest of the JALC Orchestra that he invited her to join the ensemble at the Kennedy Center’s for Barack Obama’s Inauguration Celebration. Harry Connick, Jr. heard Kelly in a master class and brought her on stage to sit
in with his band that night. She has received numerous awards from the FNX/ Phoenix Best Music Poll, the ASCAP Foundation’s Young Jazz Composers Award, The Boston Music Awards and Downbeat Critics Poll. n
MONTY ALEXANDER JAN 13, 21-26
DOUBLE FEATURE:
CATERINA ZAPPONI WITH THE PIZZARELLIS (BUCKY & MARTIN) AND FRANK VIGNOLA + HARLEM-KINGSTON EXPRESS PRE-CD RELEASE PARTY FOR “THE RIVER ROLLS ON”
JAN 13 & 21 MONTY ALEXANDER In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe: Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare, among many others. Born on D-Day (June 6, 1944) and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, he took his first piano lessons at age six but was largely self-taught. As a teenager, he witnessed concerts by Louis Armstrong and Nat “King” Cole at Kingston’s Carib Theater. He formed Monty and the Cyclones in the late 60s and also recorded on sessions with musicians who would later form The Skatalites.
TRIO WITH JOHN CLAYTON & JEFF HAMILTON JAN 22-24 HARLEM KINGSTON-EXPRESS WITH ERNEST RANGLIN & CHRONIXX JAN 25-26
Alexander and his family came to the United States at the end of 1961. Less than two years later, while playing in Las Vegas with Art Mooney’s orchestra, he caught the eye of New York City club owner Jilly Rizzo and his friend, Frank Sinatra. Rizzo hired the young pianist to work in his club, Jilly’s, where he accompanied Sinatra and others. His musical collaborations span multiple genres and styles. His projects have been as varied as assisting Natalie Cole in her tribute album to her father, Nat “King” Cole in 1991 (that album, Unforgettable, won seven Grammy awards), performing George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” under the direction of Bobby McFerrin at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and recording the piano track for the film score of Clint Eastwood’s Bird, a movie about the life of jazz titan Charlie Parker. CATERINA ZAPPONI Vocalist Caterina Zapponi has explored music ranging from jazz and the American popular song to cabaret and musical theater. Born and raised in Rome, Caterina is the daughter of celebrated screenwriter Bernardino Zapponi, a collaborator and longtime friend of Federico Fellini. Her mother was a French born chanteuse and instilled a love of the French repertoire. The film High Society introduced her to jazz, fueling a desire to move to the USA, which she did upon receiving a scholarship from Berklee College of Music. Zapponi was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and has since performed at prestigious venues throught NYC (Blue Note, Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center). She has also performed internationally with her husband, pianist Monty Alexander, at Ronnie Scott’s, Marseille Jazz Festival, New Morning, Theatre des Champs Elysees, Blue Note Tokyo, Cotton Club, Cully and Bern Festivals, and Moscow International House of Music.
Her recordings include the album Universal Love Songs (Inak Music) and the forthcoming Amorosa (Motema Music). BUCKY PIZZARELLI & FRANK VIGNOLA Legendary 7-string Jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli’s career spans seven decades, having worked with some of the biggest names in music - Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Stephane Grappelli, and numerous others. Guitar legend Les Paul named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar.” HARLEM-KINGSTON EXPRESS The Harlem-Kingston Express project combines two groups into one, seamlessly blending rocking reggae music with classic, acoustic jazz. It features Monty Alexander (piano), Hassan Shakur (bass), Obed Calvaire (drums), Karl Wright (Jamaican drums), Joshua Thomas (Reggae electric bass), Andy Bassford (guitar). TRIO WITH JOHN CLAYTON & JEFF HAMILTON This combination of Monty Alexander, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton is one of the most legendary trios in jazz. They have worked together for over 40 years and have released many albums, the most famous being Live In Montreux, one of the most celebrated jazz piano trio records of all-time. ERNEST RANGLIN & CHRONIXX Guitarist Ernest Ranglin’s sound defines the Jamaican sound for a generation of musicians. He has worked with Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, The Skatalites, and numerous other legendary reggae musicians. Called “Jamaica’s Hottest New-School Reggae Artist” by NPR and “Reggae’s Next Big Thing” by Billboard, Chronixx is truly the new prince of Reggae music.
CRAIG HANDY & 2ND LINE SMITH JAN 14-15, 8:00PM & 10:30PM With Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, his OKeh debut and first recording as a leader since 2000, tenor/alto/soprano saxophonist Craig Handy presents his initial encounter with an organ ensemble. Available January 21, 2014, the album, which consists of 10 numbers from the songbook of Jimmy Smith - the founder of modern jazz organ expression - grew out of Handy’s realization several years ago that his distinguished resume included no opportunities “to cut my teeth with any of the great organ players.” Handy’s reinterpretation of Smiths’ work includes solos with a creative edge and grooves derived from the tight second-line funk of the Crescent City. In keeping with the jazz tradition regarding finding a fresh working group, Handy recruited soul jazz specialists Kyle Koehler on Hammond B-3 and Matt Chertkoff on guitar (both New Jersey neighbors and members of his working band), sousaphone virtuoso Clark Gayton, and well known New Orleans drummers Jason Marsalis, Herlin Riley and Ali Jackson. Trumpet virtuoso Wynton Marsalis, singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and blues singer-guitarist Clarence Spady make their trademark appearances on the record as well. In approaching the session, Handy recalls, “I realized that two of Jimmy’s hits—‘The Cat’ and ‘Hi-Heeled Sneakers’—used modified second-line rhythms. A light bulb went off in my head. I said, ‘That’s it—we’ll do a Jimmy Smith record in the second-line vein.’ New Orleans is one of the furnaces that jazz comes from, and I saw no need to change my stripes to suit the style.” n
CHRISTIAN SCOTT JAN 16-19, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
Edison Award winning trumpeter-composer-producer-bandleader Christian Scott stands tall among a handful of talented young jazz artists expanding their artistic vision beyond the strict confines of the genre’s tradition. Scott has been an intrepid explorer, from his Grammy-nominated debut Rewind That to his genre stretching album Yesterday You Said Tomorrow. Scott ups the ante on his new double album, Christian aTunde Adjuah, an inspired and provocative two-CD, 23-track collection that spans a range of beyondjazz influences as he continues to make strides into uncharted territory. With Scott’s trumpet at the heart of most of the tunes, the album features reflective ballads, light and dreamy soundscapes, guitar-edged and rockinflected cookers, trumpet ecstasies as well as clarion calls and anguished wails. Scott’s band consists of guitarist Matthew Stevens, drummer Jamire Williams, bassist Kristopher Keith Funn and pianist Lawrence Fields (Fields’ piano sound is often spiced for effect by using paper on the instrument’s strings), with guests including tenor saxophonist Kenneth Whalum III, alto saxophonist Louis Fouche IIII and trombonist Corey King.
In the liner notes to Christian aTunde Adjuah, addressed as a “Letter to a Future Artist,” the New Orleans-born, Harlembased Scott writes, “As an artist, I am always attempting to do things that haven’t been done. This goes beyond simply trying to be adept at something. It requires the ability to revisit past thought processes while considering new landscapes…” In conversation, he adds, “It’s all about the willingness to forge new paths and seek new terrain while excavating one’s own past as a means of gaining a better contextual understanding of that path.” Scott describes what he plays on Christian aTunde Adjuah as “stretch music,” much like he introduced on his 2010 album, Yesterday You Said Tomorrow. In his liners, he writes about people calling his approach “stretch,” and notes, “It’s true that we are attempting to stretch— not replace—jazz’s rhythmic, melodic and harmonic conventions to encompass as many musical forms/languages/cultures as we can. My core belief is that no form of expression is more valid than any other. This belief has compelled me to attempt to create a sound that is genre blind in its acculturation of other musical forms, languages, textures, conventions and processes.” n

MACEO PARKER JAN 28 - FEB 2, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
Maceo Parker: his name is synonymous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth. Everyone knows by now that he’s played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as “ like being at University “; jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; stretching out with Bootsy’s Rubber Band. He’s the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of Funk in one golden thread. The cipher that unravels dance music down to its core. “Everything’s coming up Maceo,” concluded DownBeat Magazine in a 1991 article at the beginning of Maceo Parker’s solo career. At the time Maceo was remembered by aficionados of funk
music as sideman; appreciated mainly by those in the know. More than a decade and a half later Maceo Parker has been enjoying a blistering solo career. For the past sixteen years Maceo has been building a new funk empire, fresh and stylistically diverse. He navigates deftly between James Brown’s 1960’s soul and George Clinton’s 1970’s freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. His collaborations over the years performing or recording or both have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. His timeless sound has garnered him a fresh young fan base. n

EMEFE FRIDAY NIGHT, JAN 31 12:30AM
EMEFE has one intention: to play music that frees the audience, everybody listening at home, and everybody in the band. The group plays its own mix of afrobeat music as created by the late Fela Kuti, mixed with the funk of Sly Stone as well as jazz and hip hop influences. In the same way that Fela used this music as an escape from and confrontation against the Nigerian authorities, EMEFE uses its music to fight the inner authorities that we put
on ourselves, each for our own specific reasons. With the EMEFE sound, which consists of a drummer, a bassist, two guitarists, two percussionists, a keyboardist, and a four-piece horn section, the band hopes to spread awareness of the healing power of music, dancing, and smiling. n
