Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has firmly established himself as one of the premier players in jazz and beyond. Everstretching into more challenging and colorful ways to flex his musical chops, Hargrove has left indelible imprints in a vast array of artful settings. During his tenure on the Verve label alone, he recorded an album with a hand-picked collection of the world’s greatest tenor saxophonists (With the Tenors of Our Time), an album of standards with strings (Moment to Moment) and, in 2003, he introduced his own hip hop/ jazz collective, The RH Factor, with the groundbreaking CD Hard Groove (swiftly followed by the limited edition EP, Strength). Hargrove has also won GRAMMY® Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997, Roy’s Cubanbased band Crisol (including piano legend Jesus “Chucho” Valdes and wonder drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez) won the Best Latin Jazz Performance GRAMMY® for the album Habana. And in 2002, Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won the GRAMMY® for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group, for their three-way collaboration entitled Directions in Music.
Born in Waco TX, Roy was “discovered” by Wynton Marsalis midway through his junior year of high school, when Marsalis was conducting a jazz clinic at the school. Impressed, Marsalis invited Roy to sit in with his band at Ft. Worth’s Caravan of Dreams Performing Arts Center. Subsequently, Hargrove was able to return to the venue over a period of the next three months, sitting in with Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and Bobby Hutcherson. Word of Roy’s talent reached Paul Ackett, founder and Director of The North Sea Jazz Festival who arranged for him to perform there that summer. Every one of Roy’s albums has been different from the one preceding it. And the same can be said of the array of talents who have invited him to grace the stage and/or their recordings - from jazz legends Sonny Rollins and Jackie McLean to song stylists Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and Abbey Lincoln. From pop veterans Diana Ross, Steve Tyrell and Kenny Rankin to younger stars John Mayer and Rhian Benson to the crème de la crème of jazz divas: Carmen McRae and the late, great Shirley Horn. n

Rhythm and Stealth is the debut project of New York-based musician and producer, Lex Sadler. An accomplished bassist and synth bass player, Lex has toured nationally and internationally with numerous artists including Blitz The Ambassador and Dana Leong, and recently performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “Good Morning America” with electro-pop artist Ellie Goulding. Rhythm & Stealth fuses live instruments and jazz improvisation with glitchy electronic beats and samples. Combining hip hop, dance and drum ‘n’ bass, Rhythm & Steath boasts a unique and fresh sound within today’s EDM scene. n
NANNY ASSIS

Nanny Assis was born in the northeastern Brazilian city of Salvador, Bahia, in 1969. One of Brazil’s first cities, with predominant African influences, Salvador is the birthplace of some of the country’s most remarkable music creations. That, in part, explains why Nanny has music running through his veins, making him an outstanding singer, a terrific drummer/percussionist, and a talented songwriter who has touched hearts and souls through musical expressions that go beyond comprehension. Since 1986, when he began his successful professional career, Nanny Assis has played with amazing artists like Vinicius Cantauria, Eumir Deodato, and
John Patitucci. Yet, despite the grandeur of the folks with whom he’s sided, Nanny has always managed to find his forte. In 2011, Assis was the recipient of the prestigious Brazilian International Press Award as “Best Singer of the Year.” Nanny Assis has recorded two albums: Brazilian Vibes and Double Rainbow. n

He has also performed with Carla
Bley’s Escalator Over the Hill, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra and toured and recorded with Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band for five years. Concurrently, the guitarist extended his interest in world music idioms by performing and recording in such groups as Yuri Yunakov’s Bulgarian Wedding Band and Simon Shaheen’s Quantara. Shepik’s first two records as a leader, The Loan and The Well, were praised for their marriage of world music styles and jazz. n

GARY SMULYAN Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan is critically acclaimed as one of the major voices on the baritone saxophone today. As a teenager growing up on Long Island, Gary had the opportunity to perform with Lee Konitz, Chet Baker, and Jimmy Knepper. In 1978, he was asked to join Woody Herman’s Young Thundering Herd, which at that time included Joe Lovano, Marc Johnson and John Riley. He left Herman in 1980 and moved back to New York to join the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, led by Bob Brookmeyer. Mr. Smulyan has recorded and performed worldwide with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Tom Harrell. Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Tommy Flanagan, Chick Corea,
Diana Ross, Clark Terry, Kenny Wheeler, Charles McPherson, James Moody and Slide Hampton, among others. He has recorded five CDs for the CrissCross label: The Lure of Beauty; Saxophone Mosaic (voted one of the best 25 CDs of 1995 by WBGO); Homage (featuring Tommy Flanagan); Gary Smulyan with Strings (selected as one of the 10 best jazz CDs of 1997 by the Boston Globe); and Blue Suite with Brass. Gary’s new release, The Real Deal, on Reservoir Records is currently available. His current band, Next Generation, features his protégé, Julian Lage, a young guitarist and composer of rare talent. Gary Burton records for Concord Records. In addition to a busy performance career, Mr. Burton has been continuously involved in education. In the 1971, Burton began his faculty career at Berklee College of Music. In 1996 he was appointed Executive Vice President, a position he held until his relocation to South Florida in 2004. Mr. Burton works extensively from his home base in Fort Lauderdale and serves as Artistic Advisor to South Florida JAZZ. MAKOTO OZONE GARY BURTON Gary Burton was born and raised in Indiana. He taught himself to play the vibraphone, becoming a virtuoso as well as a major innovator on his instrument having mastered the challenging four-mallet technique. Gary studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music then joined George Shearing and subsequently Stan Getz. Burton’s first quartet was a progenitor of the jazz/ rock fusion phenomenon. The Gary Burton Quartet expanded to include guitarist Pat Metheny and the band began to explore a repertoire of modern compositions. Burton also has focused on more intimate contexts for his music. Alone at Last, a solo performance at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival, was honored with a GRAMMY® Award, his first of 13 GRAMMY® nominations and five awards. He also favors the duo format, which he has pursued primarily with
Born in Kobe, Japan in 1961, Makoto Ozone began playing organ at the age of 2 and started improvising at the age of 7. At the age of 12, he started to play piano after being exposed to and falling in love with the music of Oscar Peterson. In 1980, Ozone moved to Boston and began his studies at Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, he met Gary Burton. In 1983, he joined the Gary Burton Quartet, released his first album as a leader and had his debut solo piano concert at Carnegie Hall. Beginning in 1996, Makoto met and began a longstanding collaboration with bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Clarence Penn. He has collaborated with musicians including Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Christian McBride, Paquito D’Rivera, Eddie Gomez, Marian McPartland, Branford Marsalis and Chuck Loeb, among many others. n

Sangmin Lee is one of the most indemand recorded live session drummers in South Korea. Lee performed with artists such as all time famous Rain, Lena Junghyun Park, Juck Lee, Sora Lee, and many other renowned Korean musicians in various genres. After attaining 10+ years of session experience, Sangmin moved to the states and graduated from Berklee College of Music (B.M.) and New York University (M.M). The fresh and vibrant New York music scene lured him to explore and expand his musi-
cality by collaborating with artists such as GRAMMY® winning music producer Fran Cathcart, Casey Benjamin, Dave Pietro, Hiram Bullock and several others. Sangmin released his first solo album titled Evolution in 2010 as a music producer, composer, and a drummer. n

Having shared stages with the likes of Les Paul, Billy Stritch, and Bono, New York-based jazz vocalist Marcus Goldhaber has garnered critical raves for his “wonderfully imaginative” (JazzTimes) interpretations of straight-ahead jazz standards while earning a reputation among critics and fans for his accessible songwriting. Backed by a formidable jazz quartet, Marcus “will have you giddy one moment, melancholy the next and loving every note” (People) with material from his forthcoming album, A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening, a mixture of his favorite standards and new originals, produced in part by Billy Jay Stein (Linda Eder, Spider-Man, Beautiful Broadway cast album). Gold-
haber credits his mother for introducing him to the Great American Songbook, and throughout his career he’s developed a vast repertoire that includes selections from his current co-starring role in the hit off-Broadway Harold Arlen tribute, The Wonderful Wizard of Song. n

Pianist Manami Morita was born in Saitama, Japan in 1984. She moved to the United States in 2006 to pursue her music studies at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where she majored in Jazz Composition. In 2007, she was awarded Berklee’s Mary Jane Earnhart Endowed Scholarship. In 2008, she was selected as a representative of the Jazz Composition Department and was also awarded the Herb Pomeroy Award. In 2009, she participated in the International Kodolanyi Jazz Competition in Hungary with tenor saxophonist Mitsuru Hirayama and won third place. Manami has performed with internationally acclaimed musicians, such as Esperanza Spalding, Greg Hopkins, Mark Walker, Rosa Passos, Oscar Stagnaro and more. n

BERKLEE GLOBAL JAZZ INSTITUTE The Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI) is a performance program designed to foster creativity and musicianship through various musical disciplines, with pianist and composer Danilo Pérez as its artistic director. The BGJI provides a comprehensive contemporary music environment where students are given opportunities to explore their creativity to the highest level possible, advance the power of music as a tool for the betterment of society, and connect musical creative thinking with the natural environment. MIGUEL ZENÓN Miguel Zenón, a multiple GRAMMY® Nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow, represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the oftencontradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered as one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, he has also developed a unique voice as
a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Latin American Folkloric Music and Jazz. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón studied classical saxophone at the Escuela Libre de Música in Puerto Rico before receiving a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from Berklee College of Music, and a master’s degree in Jazz Performance at Manhattan School of Music. Zenón’s more formal studies, however, are supplemented and enhanced by his vast and diverse experience as a sideman and collaborator. Throughout his career he has divided his time equally between working with older jazz masters and working with the music’s younger innovators --irrespective of styles and genres. The list of musicians Zenón has toured and/or recorded with includes: The SFJAZZ Collective, Charlie Haden, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, David Sánchez, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, The Mingus Big Band, Bobby Hutcherson and Steve Coleman. n

Famous tap dancer, choreographer, and actor Savion Glover is the epitome of a living legend. Born in 1973, the tapping marvel has graced the stage since childhood. He set a record as the youngest person ever to receive a scholarship in the Newark Community School of the Arts, and before he was a teenager, he made his mark starring in the leading role in the Broadway musical, The Tap Dance Kid. Early in his career, Glover developed his own dancing style he dubbed “freestyle hard core.” The Tony Awardwinning dancer eventually worked with dancing greats Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. Among his credits are starring roles in shows like Jelly’s Last Jam, a role for which he made history as the youngest ever recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant.
As a choreographer, Glover’s work has helped maintain tap dancing as an art form in the modern dance world. In 1996, he choreographed and debuted in the starring role in the Broadway musical Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. The musical brought Glover a Tony for Best Choreographer. He later expanded his appeal to younger generations with recurring appearances on Sesame Street, and he holds the credits for the choreography and the live captured dancing motion behind Mumble, the penguin in the Disney film Happy Feet (2006). Glover’s quick steps and amazing rhythms continue to influence the lives of young people. His production company tours across the country visiting schools, spreading enthusiasm for tap dancing and cementing his place in history. n

APR 18-20, 8:00PM & 10:30PM On April 17-22, 2012, exactly two years prior to this memorial program, Hall completed what would ultimately become his last Blue Note engagement (joined by Scott Colley & Joey Baron, and Julian Lage as a special guest). As arrangements were being finalized for Hall’s return to Blue Note during the April 18-20 timeframe, news of his December 10, 2013 passing broke. With the dates on hold and his band already in place, the engagement naturally evolved into a memorial program to celebrate Hall’s life and music. Blue Note Jazz Club is proud to present “Playing for Jim Hall,” the official memorial tribute celebrating the life and music of legendary guitarist/ NEA Jazz Master Jim Hall. The tribute was programmed in conjunction with the Hall Family (Jane, Hall’s wife, and Devra, Hall’s daughter and manager) and friends. Guitar legend Jim Hall was a major figure in the jazz world for over six decades. His signature hollow-body jazz guitar sound, rhythmic subtlety and empathetic accompaniment style made instant classics of his recordings with fellow jazz legends Sonny Rollins, Chico Hamilton, Bill Evans, Jimmy Giuffre, Ron Carter and Paul Desmond. A perennial favorite among fellow guitarists, Hall had the dual distinction of strongly influencing as well as sometimes collaborating with the most recognizable guitarists in jazz including Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, John Abercrombie, John Scofield and Mike Stern. The New Yorker called Jim Hall, “the reigning master of the jazz guitar... a poetic player who says more with fewer notes than any living improviser.”
“Everyone I know, and thousands I have never met, from all over the world, loved Jim. But I was lucky to share life with him for 50 years,” says Jane Hall, Jim’s wife. “I got to see his gentle way, his kindness and generosity and sense of humor up close and personal. His legacy is his music which came from the biggest heart ever. Joey, Scott, Bill, and Julian along with every musician invited to play this weekend held a special place in his heart and I think his influence on all musicians who knew him or heard him will be everlasting. Mark Guiliana is an acclaimed drummer, composer, educator, producer and founder of the independent record label, Beat Music Records; through which, he will release both My Life Starts Now and Beat Music: The Los Angeles Improvisations as a bandleader later this year. His forward-thinking, conceptual approach to the instrument is also featured in Mehliana, the electric duo featuring Brad Mehldau on keyboards and synthesizers. The group’s highly anticipated debut album, Taming the Dragon (Nonesuch), was released in early 2014. Over the past decade, Guiliana’s extensive touring has taken him across six continents with artists including Meshell
Ndegeocello, Gretchen Parlato, Avishai Cohen, Matisyahu, Lionel Loueke, Now vs. Now, Dhafer Youssef, and his own groups, Beat Music and Heernt. Archi-tet, led by bassist Aki Yamamoto, was formed in 2008 with the release of their first CD. One of the band’s original compositions was used as a theme song in a TV program at NHK station in Japan. The Archi-tet’s music style has roots in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers with modern tastes of hip-hop, and popular music. The name “Archi-tet” comes from the word “Architect”, and the concept is to construct the new art work from many different elements.
Yamamoto earned his master’s degree in Jazz composition and arranging from William Paterson University. He has played and worked with great musicians including Mulgrew Miller, Jim McNeely, and Gene Bertoncini, among others. n

Bassist Stanley Clarke was barely out of his teens when he exploded into the jazz world in 1971. Fresh out of the Philadelphia Academy of Music, he arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Sanders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz and a budding young pianist-composer named Chick Corea. All of these musicians immediately recognized Clarke’s ferocious dexterity and complete musicality on the acoustic bass. Not only was he an expert at crafting bass lines and functioning as a timekeeper – in keeping with his instrument’s traditional role – but the young prodigy also possessed a sense of lyricism and melody distilled from his bass heroes Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro and others, as well as non-bass players like John Coltrane. Clarke envisioned the bass as a viable, melodic solo
instrument positioned at the front of the stage rather than in a background role, and he was uniquely qualified to take it there. The vision became a reality when Clarke and Corea formed the seminal electric jazz/fusion band Return To Forever. RTF was a showcase for each of the quartet’s strong musical personalities, composing prowess and instrumental voices. “We really didn’t realize how much of an impact we were having on people at the time,” Clarke recalls. “We were touring so much then; we would just make a record and then go back on the road.” The band recorded eight albums, two of which were certified gold (Return To Forever and the classic Romantic Warrior). They also won a GRAMMY® (No Mystery) and received numerous nominations while touring incessantly. n

Kyoko Oyobe is a pianist and composer from Japan. She started playing piano at the age of four. At the age of 17, her mother started inviting famous Japanese musicians such as Terumasa Hino to have the concerts at her parents’ house. At the age of 19, she was greatly inspired by the one of Hino’s live performances and began playing jazz piano. In 2005, she moved to New York and started performing with her own band. It has been Oyobe’s pleasure to perform at such great venues as The Kitano,

JJ SANSAVERINO APR 28, 8:00PM & 10:30PM Over the past several years, guitarist Joe “JJ” Sansaverino has reached millions with his music, touring the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia, the South Pacific, and the Caribbean. He has worked with the best in the business in a wide range of idioms, both live and in the studio, and has appeared on hundreds of recordings. An accomplished composer, arranger, and musical director, Sansaverino was playing trumpet and violin by age 11 and the guitar by age 13. Growing up in and around New York, his diverse influences - Santana, Hendrix, as well as jazz, Motown, and doo-wop - helped mold his unique style. After performing locally in NYC for several years in the early ‘90s, he embarked on his first European tour with the popular alternative rock band Heads Up. Upon returning to the U.S., he attended Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1994. Relocating to New York, he began performing nightly, quickly earning a reputation as one of the hardest-working musicians on the scene. It wasn’t long before he started appearing and recording with artists like George Clinton, Kelly Price, SuperCat, Shabba Ranks, Monty Alexander, the Jungle Brothers, Rita & Ky-Mani Marley, and Toots and the Maytals, and recording TV jingles. He eventually settled in as the lead guitarist for Maxi Priest in 2000, immediately embarking on the first of several world tours. In 2005, he released a stunning collection of his original compositions titled Sunshine After Midnight. Together with his band Nu Jazz, he continues to perform while simultaneously preparing for the recording of his forthcoming sophomore album, Waiting for You. n

His current list of performing groups are “JAMES FARM” with Joshua Redman, “PRISM” with Dave Holland and Kevin Eubanks, “SANGAM” with Charles Lloyd and Zakir Hussain, “Charles Lloyd New Quartet,” “OVERTONE” with Dave Holland, Jason Moran, Chris Potter and “VOYAGER,” Eric’s own widely recognized group. JASON MORAN An ambitiously creative musician who frequently collaborates with artists in film and dance, pianist Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. His music combines jagged, kinetic expressionism and unabashed romanticism, bristling with ideas lifted from some of the less explored corners of the jazz piano pantheon. Winner of numerous awards and honors, including a coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010, the 37-year-old pianist has released a series of projects as satisfying conceptually as they are sonically, showcasing his capacious intelligence, rollicking touch, and road-less-traveled sensibility. Since he emerged in the late90s in the quartet of alto saxophonist and ace talent scout Greg Osby, Moran has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. n
