VIVIAN SESSOMS JUNE 1
11:30AM & 1:30PM $35.00 includes music, entree & 1 drink
Born and raised in Harlem, Vivian Sessoms learned the wonder of music at a young age. Surrounded by nightclubs, churches and regular jam sessions at her family’s home, she was already singing by the time she could talk. Vivian has since performed, either live or in the studio, with an amazing array of artists including P. Diddy, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Sinead O Connor, and Stevie Wonder. She did a stint with Virgin Music Publishing and then signed on as an artist and staffwriter with K.G. of Naughty By Nature, though an album
was never released. She even went on to write and perform as a guest artist on a number of Sakamoto’s later releases, but unlike with Sakamoto, none of these situations would touch her the way future partner Chris Parks, with whom she now works, would. n

ALBARE JUNE 2, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
ALBARE is the nom de guerre of Albert Dadon, a virtuoso jazz guitarist with a strong melodic sense and a wealth of global influences. Born in Morocco and raised in Israel and France, Albare first worked as a musician in Paris, before immigrating to Australia at the age of 27. He is not only well known as a jazz musician but has maintained a highly successful career as one of Australia’s most prominent businessmen. He is undoubtedly a major force in Australian jazz, having directed the Melbourne Jazz Festival for many years and as chairman of the Australian Jazz Awards. In 2008 he received the Order of Australia for his service to the arts. He currently lives in Melbourne but travels constantly. In 2011 Albare recorded and released Long Way, Albare’s first album for the prestigious German jazz label Enja Records. Recorded in Brooklyn at Systems Sound, the album features triple GRAMMY® winner drummer Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny Group), saxophonist George Garzone (the Joe Lovano Nonet), pianist Leo Genovese (Esperanza Spalding), prolific harmonica
player Hendrik Meurkens and Albare’s long time musical collaborator, bassist and composer, Evri (Evripedes Evripidou.) Albare calls this super group iTD, or the International Travel Diary, reflecting their global backgrounds. In the fall and winter of 2012 Albare iTD toured the United States with stops in New York, Boston, Miami, Cleveland and Washington DC. During this time Long Way maintained its place on the national Jazz Week Chart for over twelve weeks! In early 2013 Albare went back into the same Brooklyn studio to record The Road Ahead with his new band, the Freeworld Jazz Project. This ensemble has proved to be a great setting for Albare’s melodic playing while continuing the international cosmopolitan theme. The band features pianist Phil Turcio (also one of Australia’s premier pop record producers), Cuban bassist Yunior Terry and Venezuelan drummer Pablo Bencid. They combine the fresh excitement of Long Way with a more sophisticated and interactive feeling within the band. n
THE DIZZY GILLESPIE™ AFRO CUBAN EXPERIENCE FEATURING MACHITO, JR. JUNE 3-4, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
In the early 1940s, Afro-Cuban jazz first emerged when Cuban musicians Frank “Machito” Grillo and Mario Bauzá formed Machito & His Afro-Cubans. Several years later, in 1947, Bauzá introduced Dizzy Gillespie to Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo, further developing Afro-Cuban jazz. Early combinations of jazz with Cuban music, such as Gillespie’s and Pozo’s “Manteca” and Charlie Parker’s and Machito’s “Mangó Mangüé”, were commonly referred to as “Cubop,” short for Cuban
bebop. Gillespie loved the substyle so much that in 1975, he invited Machito and Machito’s son, Mario Grillo (aka Machito, Jr.), to join his band for the recording of Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods. In 2014, almost 40 years later, Machito, Jr. reunites with the Gillespie legacy, joining The Dizzy Gillespie™ Afro Cuban Experience (under the direction of John Lee, Gillespie’s longtime bassist and leader of the various Dizzy Gillespie bands, including The Dizzy Gillespie™ Big Band and Quintet). n
BEKA & DJ LOGIC FEATURING VICTOR BAILEY & FRIENDS JUNE 5, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
In the Summer of 2011 at the Black Sea Jazz Festival, piano prodigy Beka Gochiashvili met with an innovative turntablist and kindred spirit, Bronxnative Jason Kibler a.k.a. DJ Logic and his band members at Batumi, Georgia’s Club Take Five. During jam sessions in the club, a musical chemistry quickly developed between them and they decided to form this band. In addition to Beka (now just 18 years old) and DJ Logic, the band features renowned electric bassist Victor Bailey with vocalist Butterscotch, adventurous keyboardist James Hurt, alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, and drummer
Justin Tyson. Beka, Logic and friends perform in support of their debut album, Chillin’ in Batumi (released in September 2013). “This crew of young virtuosos is brimming with the kind of energy and ideas that bring the music to a new, exhilarating place”, says renowned critic Bill Milkowski about the band Beka & Logic Project and adds few words regarding band’s main leader, a 18 year old pianist Beka Gochiashvili: “If Bud Powell had lived long enough to play a Mini-Moog, it might sound something like this.” n

Since then, McBride’s list of accomplishments has been nothing short of staggering. He has worked with the best of the best in the jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and neo-soul worlds. ERIC ALEXANDER & HAROLD MABERN TRIO JUNE 8
11:30AM & 1:30PM $29.50 includes music, entree & 1 drink
ERIC ALEXANDER Eric Alexander started piano lessons at the age of six. He took up the clarinet at nine and switched to alto sax three years later. The tenor sax became his obsession at Indiana University Bloomington (1986-87). After transferring to William Paterson College in New Jersey he studied with Harold Mabern, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, and others. In 1991 Eric competed against Joshua Redman and Chris Potter in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Placing second, this launched him into the whirlwind life of a professional jazz musician. He played with organ trios on Chicago’s South Side, made his recording debut with Charles Earland (Muse Records, 1991), and cut his first album as a leader, Straight Up (Delmark, 1991). Eric has appeared on record as a leader, sideman, producer, and composer. By now, he has lost count of how many albums feature his playing; he guesses 60 or 70. He has earned praise from critics and, even more important, established his own voice within the bebop tradition.
HAROLD MABERN Harold Mabern, one of jazz’s most enduring and dazzlingly skilled pianists, was born in Memphis, a city that produced saxophonists George Coleman and Charles Lloyd, pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. and trumpeter Booker Little. He was an unsung hero of the 1960s hardbop scene, performing and recording with many of its finest artists, and only in recent years has he begun to garner appreciation for his long-running legacy in jazz and the understated power of his talent; as critic Gary Giddins has written, “With the wind at his back, he can sound like an ocean roar.” During his over half-century on the scene as sideman and leader, he has played and recorded with such greats as Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, just to name a few. “I was never concerned with being a leader, I just always wanted to be the best sideman I could be. Be in the background so you can shine through.” n
JEFF LORBER FUSION JUNE 9, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
In subsequent years, Lorber dropped the term “fusion” from his billing as the movement evolved into what is currently known as contemporary jazz. Still, he continued to explore the innovative, improvisational potential of grafting other musical forms to the jazz idiom. Lorber’s music reaches a new level by crystallizing jazz, funk, and Latin rhythms with some killer melodies that will certainly translate to live performance. Obviously, time spent touring together has made Lorber, Haslip and Marienthal into a tight unit, which is evident from this latest recording. After college, he relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he formed the Jeff Lorber Fusion. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1977, and quickly became one of the most popular acts in the jazz fusion scene, due in large part to relentless touring and a string of artistically daring and commercially successful recordings.
By the late 1970s, trailblazing keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the new movement known as jazz fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. Lorber and his band, the Jeff Lorber Fusion, first honed their craft in the Portland, Oregon, club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and international audience via a combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures and compelling rhythms.
The entity formerly known as the Jeff Lorber Fusion became Lorber’s solo career with the release of It’s a Fact in 1982. After a brief but prolific stretch culminating with the highly successful Private Passion in 1986, Lorber took a break from recording his own material, opting instead to do session work and produce other artists. He resumed his solo career in 1991 with Worth Waiting For, although he continued to produce for the remainder of the decade. Lorber has been just as prolific and innovative in the new century as he was in the last, with recordings on Narada (Philly Style, Flip Side), Blue Note Records (He Had a Hat) and Peak (Heard That). n

LOU DONALDSON Lou Donaldson is very honored to be performing at Blue Note Jazz Club with his world class quartet, with whom he has been touring the world playing festivals and clubs for the past two decades. Awarded an NEA Jazz Masters fellowship in 2013, Donaldson has been termed a “truly unique and absolutely indispensable creative voice in modern jazz whose greatness stretches from being one of sublime virtuosos of swinging bebop and hard bop to being the creator of his own genre of funky jazz boogaloo that has profoundly influenced contemporary American music in many ways for several decades.” Donaldson played an absolutely invaluable role in the creation and building of the classic Blue Note Records label, and the assembly and musical development of the the classic Jazz Messengers bands that originally featured

JazzTimes describes him as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban!” Always ahead of the curve, it is no surprise Dr. Smith’s fan-base is truly worldwide. n

After his classic acoustic albums in the 1960s, the change that was in the air during the 70s enticed Ramsey Lewis toward the electric realm. With this new sound, he collaborated with the enigmatic and iconic, Earth, Wind & Fire. Sun Goddess, the result of this creative summit, is an album with sleek grooves and gorgeous melodies that continues to flow with the uplifting and positive vibes of that time. The album reached across the musical rainbow and, rightfully so, it became a huge cross-over hit; charting #1 on the Billboard Black Albums chart as well as the Jazz album chart and it charted #12 in the Pop chart. The songs “Hot Dawgit” and “Sun Goddess” charted in
the Black Singles, the Pop Singles, and the Disco singles charts. Sun Goddess has since been certified gold. Philip Bailey is an R&B, soul, gospel and funk singer, songwriter, percussionist and longtime member of Earth, Wind & Fire. SOUL UNDERSTATED FEATURING MAVIS “SWAN” POOLE FRIDAY NIGHT, JUNE 13 12:30AM
Drawn from all experiences, adult and childhood, St. Louis native Jeremy “Bean” Clemons and Bull City’s finest Mavis “Swan” Poole have created “Soul Understated.” The project serves as a musical “mother ship.” The influences on their music are overwhelming and pleasurable all at once. Grabbing elements from all styles of music and bridging them under one roof is not an easy task but they have a strong grip on it. Performing together for three years, Soul Understated was created to bring together an eclectic mix of musical forces to form a powerhouse band as well as a unique concept of music. This con-
cept allows each angle of the band to be independent yet part of a total musical thought. Having similar musical backgrounds and deriving elements from gospel, R&B, and popular music, BEAN and SWAN’s compositions clearly state where they have been while simultaneously suggesting what may lay ahead. Their energy as composers, bandleaders, and performers will only make you want to know and grow with them in every way. Soul Understated is proven to be a true reflection of like-minded individuals who share common goals and desires in life and music. n

Andy never got the recognition he deserved . . . jazz originals . . . brilliant and precious.” That footage of Andy Bey and his sisters delighting a crowd of Parisian partygoers in the Chet Baker documentary Let’s Get Lost, gives us a clue of the years of brilliance that were never recorded. At 73, Andy Bey is one of the last major performers with a personal connection to the era. As People magazine confirmed, “American song has met an American Master.” During the last five decades Bey’s engaging four octave baritone voice has taken on the character of an instrument. Since the acclaim surrounding the release of Ballads, Blues and Bey in 1996, much attention has been paid to the fact that Bey did not record as a leader for over two decades. His absence was, as Newsday put it, “like having Ella Fitzgerald take a vow of silence.” Frank Wess says, “What’s special about Andy Bey is that he knows how to tell the story.” Al Pryor in Jazziz wrote that Bey “reminds us of how emotionally powerful the great American song can be.” Bey’s four albums since his reemergence have become legend. After a twenty two year absence from recording Andy Bey returned with four albums that have become a permanent part of the musical landscape. His 2005 GRAMMY® Nominated American Song, is a celebration of one of America’s great gifts to the music world: The American Songbook. Given his limited output of studio recordings, live performances were the source of Bey’s reputation. Aretha Franklin reminisces about the nights when Andy and The Bey Sisters worked the Village in NY, “Soon as I finished my gig I’d run over
Andy Bey has been hailed as a cultural phenomenon and applauded by the tastemakers of contemporary music. From Pharrell Williams, Jimmy Scott, Avery Brooks, Jamie Cullum, & Mos Def, Andy Bey has become an icon for the next generation who attend his performances for the enlightenment of a true Master. Bey’s recent album, The World According To Andy Bey, was released on HighNote Records in June of 2013. The project recieved a GRAMMY® nomination. n
U.S. PREMIERE: “CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT TRIO”: DANILO PÉREZ/JOHN PATITUCCI/BRIAN BLADE JUNE 17-22, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
GRAMMY® award winner Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. Whether leading his own ensembles or touring with renowned jazz masters (Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy), Danilo is making a decidedly fresh imprint on contemporary music, guided, as always, by his love for jazz. He has led his own groups since the early ‘90s, and as bandleader has earned three GRAMMY® nominations for his ebullient and innovative recordings. Motherland, was nominated for two GRAMMY®Awards for “Best Latin Jazz Album,” and also garnered his third win for “Best Jazz Album” from the prestigious Boston Music Awards. Motherland was named (as were his previous four releases) among the best albums of the year by such publications as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, San Diego Tribune, Billboard and JazzTimes. In 2002, he received a nomination from the Jazz Journalists Association for “Pianist of the Year.” Currently, Perez serves as UNESCO Artist For Peace, Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, and Artistic Director of the Panama Jazz Festival . In previous years, he served as Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF and Cultural Ambas-
sador to the Republic of Panama. As a performer, bassist John Patitucci has played throughout the world with his own band, and with jazz luminaries Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, Hubert Laws, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams, and scores of others. Some of the many pop and Brazilian artists he has played with include Sting, Aaron Neville, Natalie Cole, Carole King, Milton Nascimiento, Astrud and Joao Gilberto, Airto and Flora Purim, Ivan Lins, Joao Bosco and Dori Caymmi. Drummer Brian Blade – who also leads a singer-songwriter project called Mama Rosa – is as comfortable composing word-songs and propelling and entexturing the flow for masters of that art like Joni Mitchell, Daniel Lanois, Emmylou Harris and Bob Dylan, as personalizing the complex codes of jazz drumming with the likes of Kenny Garrett, Ellis Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and, for the last 13 years, Wayne Shorter’s extraordinary quartet. n

VLADIMIR CETKAR FRIDAY NIGHT, JUNE 20 12:30AM
With his passion, energy and diverse musical persona, Vladimir Cetkar’s hallmark is his ability to seamlessly combine his many talents as a guitarist, vocalist, arranger, composer and producer of the highest order. The evident musical influences may transport you back in time to the musical era when bands like Chic and Earth Wind and Fire ruled the musical cosmos. But Vladimir’s new sound, original music expression, and contemporary production return you to the present, and portend a strong future for this genre of music. Essentially, Vladimir Cetkar’s latest release can be described as his original music cocktail,
incorporating a pristine distillate of the Jazz, Pop, Soul and Disco sounds of the late 70’s and early 80’s, along with a hint of what’s to come. Critics recognize Cetkar’s unique sound and passion, and have drawn many flattering comparisons: George Benson’s guitar playing; Quincy Jones’ and Mauro Malavasi’s arrangement and production acumen; Earth Wind and Fire’s vocals; and Jamiroquai’s grooves. n
MARCUS STRICKLAND’S TWI-LIFE SATURDAY NIGHT, JUNE 21 12:30AM
DownBeat Critic’s Poll winner Marcus Strickland has steadily proven to be an essential part of the jazz continuum since he stepped on the scene in the early 2000s. He will present his TwiLife group at The 2013 NYC Winter JazzFest; a highly anticipated annual event which showcases over seventy new and established groups in tandem with the Arts Presenters (APAP) conference. Twi-Life, an electric band with its inception rooted in the soul music Strickland grew up listening to, is a testament to his irrepressible versatility. “It seems, so far, that every Twi-Life band will be significantly different than the
next because it is my refuge for trying out my wildest ideas,” says Strickland, who is emerging as one of the most multi-faceted and prolific writers and performers of his generation. n

FABIAN ALMAZAN TRIO FEATURING CAMILA MEZA JUNE 22
11:30AM & 1:30PM $35.00 includes music, entree & 1 drink
On Rhizome, his second leader release, Fabian Almazan picks up where he left off on his acclaimed 2011 debut, Personalities. On that date, the pianistcomposer, who had garnered international visibility for his work with Terence Blanchard since 2007, revealed a tonal personality imbued with, to quote jazz journalist Larry Blumenfeld, “a bracing blend of lyrical Modernism, modernjazz improvisation and postmodern sonic disruption.” Joined by trio partners Linda Oh on bass and Henry Cole on drums, and twice bringing a string quartet into the mix, Almazan presented seven originals
that included achingly poetic ballads as well as songs defined by the disjunctive rhythms and highbrow harmony of 21st century jazz, all animated by the leader’s virtuoso pianistics. Almazan also acknowledged his Cuban bloodline (he was 9 when his parents migrated from Havana, Cuba, his birthplace, to Miami, Florida, where he came of age) with an idiomatic rendering of the iconic danzon “Tres Lindas Cubanas,” a classically inflected solo reading of Carlos Varela’s romantic bolero “Bola De Nieve,” and a phantasmagoric, electronically modified treatment of Dmitry Shostakovich’s “String Quartet No. 10, Op. 118.” n

A pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer that flavors his tunes with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Michel Camilo’s musical language is an expressive combination of his Dominican Republic musical heritage and a rich, intelligent use of jazz harmonies and textures. At age sixteen, he became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. In 1979, he moved to New York City where he furthered his education at Mannes and the Juilliard School of Music. Camilo has also become a prominent figure at festivals throughout the world. In 1987, he became the musical director for the Heineken Jazz Festival in his native Dominican Republic, a post he held through 1992. 1998 saw him become the co-artistic director of the first Latin-Caribbean Music Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. He has also
served as the president of the jury at the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano competition. As a performer, Camilo as appeared in settings as small as a solo act and as large as a symphony orchestra. He was featured in the award winning Latin jazz documentary film Calle 54 and has recorded for various film soundtracks. In addition, he has performed with several leading artists in Latin jazz like saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera and guitarist Tomatito. Mr. Camilo also has performed with some of the leading symphony orchestras from around the world including the Cleveland Symphony, the LA Philharmonic, the aforementioned National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Barcelona Symphony, and the Detroit Symphony (where he served as their “Jazz Creative Director Chair in 2009-2010”). n
HIROMI: THE TRIO PROJECT FEATURING ANTHONY JACKSON & SIMON PHILLIPS JUNE 25-29, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
The major characteristics of life include birth, growth, movement, awareness, adaptation and death. And ever since she emerged on the scene in 2003, Hiromi has been one of the most profound and prolific living forces in 21st century music. Mentored by the legendary Ahmad Jamal, the Japanese pianist/composer has created music that grows with every performance, moves easily beyond stylistic genres, exhibits an awareness of the entire jazz tradition and adapts to the contributions of her fellow bandmates. So it’s only apropos that her latest recording, set for release on June 17, 2014, via Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, is entitled Alive. Her ninth CD as a leader, Alive, heralds the return of Hiromi’s Trio Project, featuring contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Michel Camilo, The O’Jays and Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour and Jack Bruce). This terrific triad, which DownBeat magazine proclaimed as “one of the most exciting groups working in any genre today,” first formed in 2011 and recorded their first CD, Voice, that year, followed by Move in 2013. On Alive, Phillips’ powerful, yet poetic percussion and Jackson’s flowing, glow-in-the-dark
basslines beautifully buoy and support Hiromi’s ingenious and impassioned improvisations. Her evocative and expansive compositions evoke the myriad moods and mysteries of life and reveal the soulful, syncopated simpatico of her thrilling threesome. “Alive has a double meaning for me,” Hiromi says. “I wanted to write songs that deal with things and emotions that we encounter in life. But the word Alive can also mean ‘played live.’ I’ve been performing with Simon and Anthony for four years. We’ve made three records together, and we’ve done so many live shows as a trio. We have a great time being adventurous, and I felt that we can make the record sound like a live recording in front of the audience. That’s the great thing about having a working trio: We understand how to make each other shine. Anthony is an amazing improviser. He composes incredible counter-lines when I solo, and he always plays something to make [the music] shine even more. And Simon has an amazing tone and a beautiful sound on the drums; he’s like an orchestra. They can play anything, and they understand so many different genres of music. They have no boundaries. It’s been a great journey with this group.” n

GATO BARBIERI JUNE 30, 8:00PM & 10:30PM
Mystical yet fiery, passionately romantic yet supremely cool – you hear those first few notes from that instantly recognizable tenor, and know you’re in the unique musical world of Gato Barbieri. His enduring career has covered virtually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-’60s, to film scoring and his ultimate embrace of Latin music throughout the ’70s and ’80s. Barbieri began playing tenor saxophone with his own band in the late ’50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Michelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded two albums for Blue Note: Complete Communion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chico O’Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period. Barbieri recorded a handful of albums on the Flying Dutchman label in the early ’70s and then signed with the Impulse imprint, where he recorded his classic Chapter Series: Latin America (1973), Hasta Siempre (1973), Viva
Emiliano Zapata (1974), and Alive in New York (1975). While at Impulse, he also composed the GRAMMY®winning score for the film Last Tango in Paris (1972) – an achievement he parlayed into success as a film composer, scoring a dozen international films over the years in Europe, South America, and the U.S. By the mid-’70s, Barbieri’s coarse, wailing tone began to mellow, a change evident on his ’70s A&M recordings. However, early ’80s dates like the live Gato … Para Los Amigos (1984) saw the saxophonist reclaim a more intense, rock-influenced South American sound. After many years of limited musical activity due to the passing of his first wife Michelle (also his closest musical confidant and manager) and his own triple bypass surgery six weeks later, Barbieri returned stronger than ever with the 1997 Columbia offering Que Pasa, the fourth-highest-selling contemporary jazz album of that year. Since that reemergence, he has continued to release albums, including The Shadow of the Cat (2002), which won Billboard’s prestigious 2003 Latin Jazz Album of the Year award and garnered a GRAMMY® nomination, and New York Meeting (2010), his latest release. n
