ODEAN POPE TRIO CD RELEASE SHOW MARCH 4, 8PM & 10:30 PM Odean Pope grew up in Philadelphia alongside jazz notables such as John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Benny Golson, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Ray Bryant, Bill Barron, Kenny Barron, Archie Shepp, Jymie Merritt, Jimmy Garrison, Philly Joe Jones and Dizzy Gillespie. Coltrane chose Odean to replace him in Jimmy Smith’s Group when he left for New York to join Miles Davis. Although he was close to Coltrane and continues to revere his artistry, Odean was always searching for his own musical sound. This led him to study with Ron Rubin, the principal woodwind player in the Philadelphia Orchestra.

In 1979, Odean joined the Max Roach Quartet as a regular member for more than two decades. It was as the tenor man with Max Roach that Odean perfected the techniques of circular breathing and multiphonics, both allowing him to stretch his solo improvisations from dazzling elevations to the throbbing, husky sounds for which he is so well known. Odean won acclaim from Australia to Japan, even winning “Best Tenor Saxophone Player” at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Odean has led two musical lives. Whereas his musical legion left for New York, Odean kept Philadelphia as his home base. Having grown up in North Philadelphia, Odean has always felt a strong commitment to his community through working musically with the children. He was musical director of a Philadelphia cultural initiative, “Mod-

THE JAZZ CRUSADERS

ft. joe sample, wilton felder, william henderson MARCH 5 - 10, 8PM & 10:30PM

“It’s time to gear up again,” says Joe Sample, the brilliant keyboardist who, nearly a half-century after the birth of The Crusaders, is leading the charge for the group’s renewal. “It’s time to revisit and revitalize the tradition that gave us purpose and identity. We’re looking back to our beginnings for our strength—back to that healing feeling when the music first got all over us.” In 1961, four fellows from Houston transplanted themselves to Los Angeles and added more distinctly bluesy elements to the soul jazz style with an ear-grabbing album called The Freedom Sound on the Pacific Jazz label. The band, which had been known in turn as the Swingsters, the Modern Jazz Sextet, and the Nighthawks, was now named the Jazz Crusaders. Its four co-leaders were trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxophonist (and occasional bassist) Wilton Felder, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Nesbert “Stix” Hooper. The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces,

the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial. But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements. If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979. n

AFRO-CUBAN ALL STARS MARCH 12-17, 8PM & 10:30PM

Juan de Marcos González is one of the most important figures in Cuban music today. He has a mission to show the world the wealth, diversity and vitality of Cuban music. His work with the Afro-Cuban All Stars, the Buena Vista Social Club, Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer, Sierra Maestra and others has made an extraordinary contribution to raising the profile of Cuban music throughout the world. However, neither his name nor his crucial contribution is well known to the general public and he remains something of an unsung hero of Cuban music. González was born in Havana in 1954 and grew up surrounded by music (his father was a singer and played with Arsenio Rodríguez amongst others). While at university he co-founded the group Sierra Maestra in 1978. Styled as a traditional Cuban septeto group (three, trumpets, bass, percussion and vocals), the dynamic young band’s aim was to bring about an appreciation of Cuban son by the youth of the island. The band achieved great success, recording fourteen albums in Cuba, touring Africa and Europe and receiving various awards.

González had long harboured a dream to put together a band combining the old masters and the new generation of Cuban musicians. In 1997 two records were planned to be recorded at Havana’s EGREM studios: the debut from the All Stars and a collaboration between West African and Eastern Cuban musicians for which Ry Cooder was invited as producer. The All Stars album was the first to be recorded and González’s band provided both the springboard and many of the musicians for the Buena Vista album that followed. The day after the All Stars album was completed Ry Cooder arrived in Havana to be greeted by this ensemble for the start of what was to become the Buena Vista Social Club. González acted as consultant, coordinator and conductor during the sessions. Following the album’s release Juan de Marcos González led the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Rubén González on their debut European and U.S. tours and directed the only ever two Buena Vista Social Club concerts in Amsterdam and New York’s Carnegie Hall. n

ACOUSTIC ALCHEMY MONDAY, MARCH 18, 8PM & 10:30PM

Triple-Grammy nominated artists Acoustic Alchemy are fast approaching their quarter century of recording since 1987’s Red Dust and Spanish Lace established the ensemble as an ever evolving force in contemporary jazz. The group has assembled a vast

and loyal following that stretches well beyond their U.K. origins. The band’s story begins with two guitarists, Nick Webb and Simon James, who recorded a self-financed, selfproduced album in the mid 1980s entitled Acoustic Alchemy. Shortly after the release, James left the partnership to study flamenco guitar in Spain, leaving Webb to promote the record on his own. Webb turned to a rock guitarist named Greg Carmichael, whose background complemented his own – Webb had studied jazz at Leeds College of Music, while Carmichael had studied classical at London College of Music – and the two assumed the name of Acoustic Alchemy.

The road to instrumental stardom began when Webb and Carmichael provided the one-off-in-flight entertainment for a Virgin Airlines England to America flight, in search of an elusive recording contract; they often liked to say they “played their way to America”. Signed to the MCA Master Series label by Tony Brown, their popularity took off in conjunction with the rise of the New Adult Contemporary radio format. Acoustic Alchemy’s latest album, Roseland was released in 2011. Carmichael explains that the spirited feeling of Roseland is the result of a natural chemistry he’s developed with Miles Gilderdale over the years. Gilderdale became Carmichael’s full time creative partner after the passing of founding member Nick Webb in 1998. “The band has been through a lot of changes over the years, but the concept of two acoustic guitars has always been the emotional centerpiece which draws people close,” says Carmichael. “I’m happy these days because I love all the musicians in the band and its great touring with them and playing live onstage. For me, whether we’re jamming or stopping for gas at a truck stop, it’s honestly like being on vacation, and we’re excited to have so many loyal fans who have enjoyed taking the journey with us. The positive spirit behind our music and album titles comes from the wonderful relationship we have always had with them.” n

ROBBEN FORD MONDAY, MARCH 19-20 8PM & 10:30PM

Robben Ford is one of the premier electric guitarists today, particularly known for his blues playing as well as his ability to be comfortable in a variety of musical contexts. A five-time Grammy nominee, he has played with artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, Claus Ogerman, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan, John Mayall, Greg Allman, John Scofield and many others. Ford’s new album Bringing It Back Home is a stunning study in soul, style and virtuosity that cuts to the heart with its exceptional, emotionladen musicianship. The disc also brings the fivetime Grammy nominated stage and studio legend back to his earliest roots as a performer, playing blues. The albums allstar line-up features organist Larry Goldings, drummer Harvey Mason, bassist David Piltch and trombonist Steve Baxter. Bringing It Back Home revisits and reshapes the roots of Ford’s first musical love. The guitar kingpin selected 10 tunes from the blues canon, ranging from early Delta pioneer Charley Patton’s “Bird’s Nest Bound” to Bob Dylan’s “You Go Your Way and I Go Mine,” and, along with a hand-picked team of A-list players, crafted dynamic, new and highly original arrangements for each song in the studio. On his interest in jazz, Robben says, ”I fell in love with the sax playing of

Paul Desmond and The Dave Brubeck Quartet, and before long found Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and of course, Miles

Davis.” These influences have stayed with Robben, playing a large part in his particular blend of jazz and blues that define him as a guitarist and allow him to play in a wide variety of settings. “This is the album I really wanted to make right now,” Ford relates. “I wanted to apply my perspective to the music that first moved me, get together with a group of great musicians and play what we were inspired to play at that moment, without any pressure or expectations. The results are really pure, and the most fun I’ve had making an album in years.” n

STANLEY CLARKE & GEORGE DUKE MARCH 21-24, 8PM & 10:30PM

Bassist Stanley Clarke teamed up with keyboardist George Duke in 1981 to form the Clarke/Duke Project, scoring a Top 20 pop hit with the single “Sweet Baby.” Over the course of their funk-filled and genre-smashing collaborations, including three albums, the two have created performances full of fun, energy, and exceptional musicianship, with a big bottom and keyboard flights of fancy. In 2012 the new Clarke/Duke 4 toured and performed on the Blue Note Jazz festival. It had been six years since the two were touring together. “We have a good time together,” remarked Clarke. Duke concurred: “Touring with Stanley is always a good thing, because he’s a nut. He’s the younger brother I never had.” Multi-Grammy Award-winning bassist Stanley Clarke became the first bassist in history who could double on acoustic and electric bass with equal ferocity and the first bassist ever to headline tours, selling out shows worldwide. A veteran of over 40 albums, he won the 2011 Best Contemporary Jazz Album Grammy for his album The Stanley Clarke Band.

Clarke co-founded the seminal fusion group Return to Forever with Chick Corea and Lenny White. Clarke has collaborated with Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Paul McCartney, and Keith Richards, to name a few. An accomplished film and TV composer of over 60 projects, his credits include Boyz n the Hood (1991), the Tina Turner biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993), Romeo Must Die (2000), and The Transporter (2002). He has garnered three Emmy Nominations and a BMI Award for his scoring. Keyboardist and vocalist George Duke, also a multi-Grammy Award winner, has worked with a who’s who of musical greats, including Cannonball Adderley, Anita Baker, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, and Dianne Reeves. One of the foremost keyboard pioneers, he helped usher in the ’70s fusion revolution with his work with Jean Luc Ponty and Frank Zappa. Through the years, along with his 30 solo projects and busy producing schedule, Duke has acted as musical director for numerous artists and television specials, including the Soul Train Music Awards and NBC’s Sunday Night Show. n

With his brilliant tone and soulful, passionate delivery, it’s no wonder young Japanese trumpeter Takuya Kuroda continues to thrive in NYC. Originally from Kobe, Takuya came to the U.S. in 2003 to study at The New School. Since arriving, he has become a fixture on the scene, performing alongside legends like Junior Mance, acknowledged masters like Francisco Mela and Pino Palladino, and the rising stars of his generation, including José James, Ben Williams, and Kris Bowers. Kuroda has released two albums as a leader, Bitter

and High (2010) and Edge (2011), both to critical acclaim. He has performed at notable festivals worldwide and at some of the most important live music venues in the country. n

KENNY WERNER With THE BRUSSELS JAZZ ORCHESTRA

INSTITUTE OF HIGHER LEARNING

Long regarded as one of Europe’s premier big bands - a group that “manifests love,” according to Grammy-winning arranger Maria Schneider - The Brussels Jazz Orchestra has joined hands with Kenny Werner to create a winning tableau vivant of spirited writing and performance. The Institute of Higher Learning features a sumptuous 3-part suite, “Cantabile,” that reinforces in a singular way Werner’s place among forward-thinking jazzmen. Textural, rhythmic, evincing cascading swirls of color, it was inspired by and dedicated to Bob Brookmeyer. Led by reedman and group founder Frank Vaganee, the BJO offers a perfect canvas for Werner’s painterly approach to composition and arranging.
