IMANI UZURI MONDAY, APRIL 1, 8PM & 10:30PM

Recently praised in the New York Times for her “gorgeously chesty ruminations” by music critic Steve Smith, “stunning” (New York Magazine) vocalist and innovative composer Imani Uzuri returns to the Blue Note on April 1 to perform songs from her new acclaimed album, The Gypsy Diaries, which draws on her rural Southern roots as well as influences ranging from Sufi devotionals to Romany laments. Uzuri will be joined by a stellar group of musicians who are all featured on the album, including Marika Hughes (cello), Kaoru Watanabe (Japanese shinobue flute, western flute),

Todd Isler (world percussion), album co-producer Christian Ver Halen (acoustic guitar), and Neel Murgai (sitar, daf). Imani Uzuri’s The Gypsy Diaries has been praised by fans and critics alike, from Ebony to All About Jazz to Time Out New York. Carol Cooper of the Village Voice raves, “With a voice that would sound equally at home on an opera stage or a disco 12-inch, Uzuri is a constant surprise on record, seamlessly combining jazz, classical, country and blues motifs into highly personalized compositions.” n

MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL ON TOUR 55TH ANNIVERSARY

FEATURING DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER, CHRISTIAN McBRIDE, BENNY GREEN, LEWIS NASH, CHRIS POTTER, & AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE APRIL 2-7, 8PM & 10:30PM

Monterey is the longest consecutively running jazz festival in the world. This exclusive presentation celebrates the festival’s legacy expanding the boundaries of live jazz. The dream of founder Jimmy Lyons became reality in 1958, when the first Monterey Jazz Festival featured artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, John Lewis, Sonny Rollins, Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Harry James, Max Roach, and Billie Holiday. This 55th Anniversary Tour reflects Monterey’s “traditional-untraditionalist” attitude, jazz-with-a-purpose exuberance, and joyful fun that continues to be the hallmark of the festival to this day. Over the last four decades Dee Dee Bridgewater has risen to the top tier of today’s jazz vocalists. She is a multiple Grammy winner, Tony-award winner, has been nominated for London theater’s West End equivalent, and has received France’s top honor, the Victoire de la Musique. Christian McBride’s large sound and expertise are reminiscent of Ray Brown and Paul Chambers. McBride studied at Juilliard and has played with Bobby Watson, Benny Golson, Roy Hargrove, Freddie Hubbard, Ray Brown, Pat Metheny and a host of others. Pianist Benny Green played as a teenager with Joe Henderson and Woody Shaw. He spent years in

the bands of Betty Carter and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He has also worked with Freddie Hubbard, and as a member of Ray Brown’s Trio. He has recorded for Criss Cross, Blue Note and Telarc. Drummer Lewis Nash has toured and recorded with a who’s who of jazz: Betty Carter, Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Peterson, Sonny Rollins, Ray Brown, Horace Silver, Ron Carter, Hank Jones, Benny Carter, Milt Jackson, Art Farmer, McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Pat Martino, Clark Terry, Diana Krall, Joe Williams, and Nancy Wilson. Saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. Down Beat called him “One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet” while Jazz Times identified him as “a figure of international renown.” Potter’s impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader and sideman appearances on over 100 albums. Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has worked with Steve Coleman, Joe Henderson, Aaron Parks and Vijay Iyer, Josh Roseman and Esperanza Spalding. In 2007 Akinmusire won the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition and the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. n

BANN: SEAMUS BLAKE, JAY ANDERSON, OZ NOY & ADAM NUSSBAUM MONDAY, APRIL 8, 8PM & 10:30PM

BANN – a group put together with old and new friends. Comprised of members who have all been on the scene for quite a few years, this progressive outfit embraces the jazz tradition while keeping one foot firmly planted in the music of today’s world: rock, R&B, soul, and more. The music Bann plays is a combination of original tunes and some old, tried-andtrue favorites filtered through the band’s collective point of view. Bann’s drum chair is occupied by Adam Nussbaum, a versatile musician who regularly supports some of the most notable names on today’s jazz scene. After studying at the Davis Center and City College of New York, Nussbaum was making a strong impression in the jazz world by 1978, playing regularly with both Dave Liebman and John Scofield. His other important associations through the years have included Stan Getz, Gil Evans, Gary Burton, Steve Swallow, Michael Brecker, Don Grolnick, James Moody, Sonny Rollins, Art Pepper, Joe Henderson, Charles Lloyd, and countless others. Seamus Blake handles Bann’s saxophone duties. A New York-based musician, he is recognized as one of the finest exponents of contemporary jazz. His music is known for its sophistication, bold improvisations, and “sheer swagger.” John Scofield, who hired Seamus for his Quiet Band, called him “extraordinary, a total saxophonist.” Blake’s recent releases Live in Italy (2009), Bellwether (2009), and Live at Smalls (2010) have garnered him considerable critical praise for his masterful playing, his fine com-

positional skills, and his facility as a leader. Bann guitarist Oz Noy has made a huge impact on the jazz scene since his arrival in New York City in 1996. His unique and intoxicating style has bro-

ken all the rules of instrumental guitar music by focusing on the groove. All-stars such as Keith Carlock, Anton Fig, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Dave Weckl often contribute to his projects on drums, with bassists Will Lee, James Genus, and Reggie Washington holding down the low end. His latest release is Twisted Blues Vol. 1 (2011). Rounding out the quartet is bassist Jay Anderson. Among the most versatile and respected jazz artists performing today, he has been featured on over 300 recordings, including work with Paul Bley, Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, John Scofield, John Abercrombie, Donald Byrd, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Lee Konitz, and more. He’s also performed with the big bands of Kenny Wheeler, Bob Mintzer, Mel Lewis, and Maria Schneider. n

AL Di MEOLA & GONZALO RUBALCABA DUO APRIL 9-14, 8PM & 10:30PM

A bona fide guitar hero, perennial poll-winner and virtuoso of the highest order, Al Di Meola has also been recognized over the past 30 years as a prolific composer and respected artist with over 20 recordings as a leader. His creative output to date is staggering, whether it’s with his current World Sinfonia band or past musical endeavors like his electric Tour de Force group with Jan Hammer, Anthony Jackson, Steve Gadd and Mingo Lewis, the internationally acclaimed Trio with fellow guitar superstars John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, the Rite of Strings trio with Stanley Clarke and Jean-Luc Ponty or the ‘70s fusion supergroup Return To Forever with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard aficionados who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola’s writing along with the soulfulness and his inherent lyricism of his

guitaristic expression have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the six-string set. Born in post-revolutionary Havana, Cuba, Gonzalo Rubalcaba first introduced his instantly recognizable pianistic touch and spirit to the broader world in the early ‘80s. Since then he has garnered Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards (for Nocturne (2001) with Charlie Haden and Supernova (2001), respectively), as well as an additional 15 Grammy nominations. Rubalcaba has performed with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Ignacio Berroa, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, Eric Harland, Marcus Gilmore, John Patitucci, and Jack DeJohnette, among others. He continues to tour the world as a bandleader and solo pianist in jazz and classical settings. n

HIROMI: THE TRIO PROJECT

FEATURING ANTHONY JACKSON & SIMON PHILLIPS APRIL 16-21, 8PM & 10:30PM

Pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara, whose passionate and incendiary keyboard work has been a shining light on the jazz landscape since her 2003 debut, believes that the voice that never speaks can sometimes be the most powerful of all. A mesmerizing instrumentalist in her own right, Hiromi enlists the aid of two equally formidable players for her newest project – bassist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, The O’Jays, Steely Dan,

Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips. Jackson had previously played on a couple tracks from each of Hiromi’s first two albums – Another Mind in 2003 and Brain in 2004 – but they had never recorded an entire album together. “I’ve always been a huge fan of his bass playing,” she says. “I’ve always liked playing with him, and I was very happy that we finally had the chance to make an entire album together.” She hadn’t crossed paths with Phillips prior to her record Voice released in 2011, but he came highly recommended by not only Jackson but also Stanley Clarke, the legendary jazz fusion bassist who gave her a prime spot on his two most recent projects, Jazz in the Garden in 2009 and The Stanley Clarke Band in 2010.

When it came time to go into the studio to record Move, the trio was able to record quickly and effortlessly since many of the songs had been road-tested. Recorded by GRAMMY®-winning producer and engineer Michael Bishop at Aire Born Studios in Zionsville, Indiana, Move, like Voice, has an overriding theme, which Hiromi describes as “time in one day.” “You wake up and go to work and then hang out,” she says. “The album is like a soundtrack for a day.” The opening title-track begins with an undulating piano riff that mimics the sound of a ringing alarm. “It’s one of the most difficult pieces I’ve ever written,” says Hiromi. “I had great musicians with me, and we worked hard on that song. In the studios and rehearsals, we spent a lot of time to play it right. It’s very tricky because when a song sounds difficult, it’s not fun. It has to groove and it has to go beyond ‘this is a difficult song.’ It has to make you groove and feel the rhythm. To reach that point really took some time.” Move comes to a close with “11:49 PM,” an 11-minute song designed to mark the end of one day and the beginning of a new one. “Before you go to bed, you think through what you have been through and you think and all these emotions come out,” says Hiromi. “I think the nighttime is the most emotional time of the day, especially when you’re at home. I don’t know what makes people think that but it’s just the night. People show so much more emotion and heart in that particular time of the day. I started to write a song about it. Whenever I wrote [‘11:49 PM’], it was always at nighttime. I went through all these emotions.” n

MACEO PARKER APRIL 22-25, 8PM & 10:30PM

Maceo Parker: his name is synonymous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth. Everyone knows by now that he’s played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as “like being at University;” jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; stretching out with Bootsy’s Rubber Band. He’s the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of Funk in one golden thread. The cipher that unravels dance music down to its core. “Everything’s coming up Maceo,” concluded DownBeat Magazine in a 1991 article at the beginning of Maceo Parker’s solo career. At the time Maceo was remembered by aficiona-

dos of funk music as sideman; appreciated mainly by those in the know. More than a decade and a half later Maceo Parker has been enjoying a blistering solo career. For the past sixteen years Maceo has been building a new funk empire, fresh and stylistically diverse. He navigates deftly between James Brown’s 1960’s soul and George Clinton’s 1970’s freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop. His collaborations over the years performing and recording have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. His timeless sound has garnered him a fresh young fan base. n

ARTURO SANDOVAL APRIL 26-28, 8PM & 10:30PM

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. He is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Oscars performing with Celine Dion, at the Grammy Awards with Justin Timberlake and as a leader, as well as on the Billboard Awards with Alicia Keys. Sandoval has been awarded 6 Grammy Awards, and nominated 12 times; he has also received 6 Billboard Awards and one Emmy Award. His latest record Dear Diz, Every Day I Think of You just won a Grammy for best jazz large ensemble. Arturo Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Her-

man, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys. He has performed with John Williams with the Boston Pops, and in the Super bowl with Tony Bennet and Patti LaBelle. Arturo Sandoval reaches beyond the scope of mere effort. His struggles while in Cuba and since his defection have given him more energy and strength, urging him to accomplish and surpass his childhood dreams. Filled with a virtuoso capability, he desires nothing more than to share his gift with others who feel the same intense adoration for music as he does. One frequently speaks of Arturo Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes, but he who has seen him on the piano, lyrically improvising a ballad, or has had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight ahead jazz, Latin jazz or classical, knows that Arturo Sandoval is a prominent musician, and one recognizes that Arturo is one of the most brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our time. n
