Pianist and composer Luke Celenza speaks about the music on his independently released debut album,

Back & Forth, with a clarity and equanimity that defies his young age. TAKE 6 MAY 7-12, 8PM & 10:30PM

Heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet!”, Take 6 is the quintessential a cappela group and model for vocal genius. Six virtuosic voices united in crystal clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop. With praise from such luminaries as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston, the multi-platinum selling sextet has toured across the globe, collaborated across genres, and is recognized as the pre-eminent a capella group in the world. The group has come a long way from their days at Huntsville, Alabama’s Oakwood College where McKnight formed the group as The Gentleman’s Estate Quartet in 1980. When tenor Mark Kibble heard the group rehearsing in the dorm bathroom, he joined

in the harmonies and performed on stage that night. When Mervyn Warren joined shortly afterward, they took the name Alliance. Yet, when they signed to Reprise Records/ Warner Bros. in 1987, they found that there was another group with the same name, so they became Take 6. Their self-titled debut CD won over jazz and pop critics, scored two 1988 Grammy Awards, landed in the Top Ten Billboard Contemporary Jazz and Contemporary Christian Charts, and they’ve never slowed down. What makes the music and the group last this long? The answers are direct and simple: faith, friendship, respect, and love of music. Such qualities garnered them awards beyond musical category - a Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Award nominations. From their exceptional live performances to their recordings, these qualities remain at the heart of the Take 6 phenomenon. n

FABIZIO SOTTI RIGHT NOW ALBUM RELEASE WITH SPECIAL GUESTS M1, RES, CLAUDIA ACUNA AND ISABELLA LUNDGREN MAY 14-15, 8PM & 10:30PM

Lauded Italian jazz guitar virtuoso and music producer/songwriter Fabrizio Sotti will release his stunning new album Right Now on May 14, 2013, via Sotti Entertainment, Inc. Mixing his jazz and pop sensibilities for the first time as a recording artist, Fabrizio has assembled an exciting and unexpected list of guests on his latest effort, which features original songs and timeless covers of popular tunes. Joining Fabrizio is R&B powerhouse Melanie Fiona, reggae superstar Shaggy, hip-hop icons Ice T and M-1 of Dead Prez, alt-soul singer Res, European pop legend Zucchero, acclaimed composer/multi-instrumentalist/producer Mino Cinélu, Chilean jazz vocalist Claudia Acuña, soul singer Alegbra Blessett and rising Swedish star Isabella Lundgren. Songs that have both personally and musically inspired Fabrizio have been re-worked into mesmerizing jazz-pop gems, including Pink Floyd’s “The Wall,” Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary,” Bob Marley’s “Waitin’ In Vain,” U2’s “One” and Cesária Évora’s “Fidjo Maguado.” The album’s cohesive sound stems from the band made up

of Fabrizio on electric, acoustic, classical and nylon string guitars, Tony Grey on bass and Mino Cinélu on drums/percussion. Sparked by the idea of “right now,” Fabrizio’s ever-bubbling creativity led him to begin working on an album with voices, instrumentation and song choices that would eloquently evoke the joy of contentedness and living in the moment. He invited some of his favorite contemporary artists to join on his newly written songs and interpret popular songs that hold deep meaning for him. For the first time in his own music, Fabrizio fused this pop-leaning element with his acclaimed jazz guitar playing. It became at once a nod to his personal journey and a step forward in his artistic adventures. By drawing from all corners of his personal memories and his more than two-decade genre-spanning career as a jazz guitarist and producer for everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Cassandra Wilson to Q-Tip to K’Naan, Fabrizio’s creative expression has blossomed. The result is a rich and authentic album that welcomes music fans of all genres to come along for the ride.n

THE DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA MONDAY, APRIL 29, 8PM & 10:30PM

Considered by many to be the greatest American composer in history, Duke Ellington and his music influenced millions of people over the course of his 50-year career. Thanks to a body of work that transcends boundaries and renews itself through every generation of fans and music lovers, his legacy continues to live on and will endure for generations to come.

ness, what makes Duke an iconoclastic genius and an unparalleled visionary are his extended suites. From 1943’s Black, Brown and Beige to 1972’s The Uwis Suite, Ellington used the suite format to give his jazz songs a far more empowering meaning, resonance, and purpose: to exalt, mythologize, and re-contextualize the African-American experience on a grand scale.

Ellington described those who impressed him as “beyond category.” Because of the unmatched artistic heights to which he soared, no artist deserves this description more than Ellington himself. He is best remembered for the over 3,000 songs that he composed during his lifetime – titles like “It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Mood Indigo,” “Solitude,” “In a Mellow Tone,” and “Satin Doll.” When asked what inspired him to write, he replied, “My men and my race are the inspiration of my work. I try to catch the character and mood and feeling of my people.” Ellington’s popular compositions set the bar for generations of brilliant jazz, pop, theater, and soundtrack composers to come. While these compositions guarantee his great-

Duke Ellington was awarded the Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award in 1966. He was later awarded several other prizes, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and the Legion of Honor by France in 1973. He died of lung cancer and pneumonia on May 24, 1974, a month after his 75th birthday, and is buried in the Bronx. Although Ellington himself has passed, his music lives on, as does the orchestra that bears his name. A world-class big band, The Duke Ellington Orchestra continues to perform Duke’s music at venues worldwide, preserving the legacy of one of this country’s greatest national treasures. n

HALF NOTE RECORDS NEW RELEASE Striking, bold, organic, and beautiful. Those words describe Maya Azucena’s voice, her music, and her message. On CRY LOVE her impressive talent unfolds over eleven tracks. An anthem for justice, the title track constitutes the album’s core concept. Her desire to inspire and empower listeners saturates the edgy groove of “Warriors” and the sanguine sway of “Near”. “The Half” is a harrowing take propelled by rock icon Vernon Reid. She invited reggae legend and Billboard #1 artist iNi Kamoze aboard on “My Back’s Not Up Against The Wall” while the glistening, acoustic qualities of “Belong To The Sun” furnish another standout cut. The songs are all unified by a remarkable depth and stunning musicality.
