Feature Farm FEATURE FARM: MCLEOD LIVESTOCK
MCLEOD LIVESTOCK
McLeod Livestock is a family-owned operation consisting of 150 head of quality purebred Charolais cows. McLeod Livestock is located near Cochrane, Alberta in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, just 40 minutes from Calgary. The farm is run by Rod and April McLeod with the help of their daughter Megan and their son, Colby and his wife Alyson. McLeod Livestock has always been a family affair, whether it is getting ready for their annual bull sale, fall female production sale, going to shows, or simply calving cows and doing chores. With many years dedicated to the beef industry and the Charolais breed, they believe they understand the roll that Charolais cattle play for their commercial cattle producers in a successful cross breeding program that creates profitable beef production for all sectors of the industry. They believe in the statement that “Great cows make great herd bulls”. As such, they have spent years cultivating their herd by using proven cow families and selective breeding in conjunction with embryo transplanting to create consistent, functional, high performing cattle with sound structure and longevity. As a family and a farm, they never stop innovating and striving to develop new and different genetics to further their program and those of their customers. Their annual bull sale is held each year on the Wednesday following Family Day at the Olds Cow Palace, Olds, AB. Their 2023 bull sale will mark their 10th annual sale. The sale offering consists of some of the highest performing yearling Charolais bulls you will find in Canada. The coffee is always on at McLeod Livestock and if you stop by there is never a shortage of Baileys. Rod and April McLeod enjoy having visitors, come stop by the farm.

Welcome WELCOME TO THE 2022 GUTS, BUTTS & NUTS REPORT
It is with great anticipation and excitement we present the 2022 edition of Guts, Butts, and Nuts. The “Guts, Butts, and Nuts Report” is a summary of the 2022 spring bull sale season which represents data collected from 3201 bulls and 122 ranches.
This report takes three main categories into consideration: adjusted 205 day weights, sale day weights, and scrotal circumferences. Data was collected from our customers’ 2022 bull sale catalogues for bulls that were born in 2021 that were on the Right Way creep and feed programs. These data are as accurate as the sales catalogues from which they were retrieved, and all producer names have been left out.
A section of this newsletter will be devoted to the Right Way rations and creep feeds available at Country Junction Feeds. The “Guts, Butts, and Nuts Report” will be your source for more practical feeding guidelines and ruminant nutrition tailored to meet your individual needs. We will also feature our affiliate companies and the other products and services we provide including mineral programs, milk replacer, and farm supplies. We hope you enjoy the 2022 edition of the Guts, Butts, and Nuts as much as we enjoyed putting it together!
TRIBUTE TO BRIAN MALMAS On behalf of the Country Junction team, we would like to dedicate the 2022 edition of the Guts, Butts, and Nuts publication to Brian Malmas. Brian was the driving force behind this magazine putting in countless hours attending bull sales and tabulating results for the newsletter. The passion Brian had for the feed industry was a major factor in implementing the Right Way feed program. These feed rations allowed his customers to raise top quality, high gaining, and high selling bulls across the province. Brian worked as a sales rep for Country Junction Feeds just shy of 40 years and retired from his position in July 2021. Even though he won’t be putting the 2022 edition together, the team will give it our best shot in doing so. We would like to wish Brian a happy retirement and thank him for many years of commitment to Country Junction Feeds and the Guts, Butts, and Nuts publication. - Country Junction Feeds C O U N T RY

ADJUSTED 205 WEIGHTS
WEIGHTS
This section will look at the adjusted 205 day weight for the yearling bulls. It should be noted that most of this weight gain is correlated to the mothers milking ability. Not all the bulls on the Country Junction feeding program had dams on one of our programs. Most of these calves were on one of the Right Way creep options which appears to have contributed to exceptional weaning weights.
SALE DAY WEIGHTS On this graph we are looking at the sale day weight of almost all the yearling bulls we collected data on. We wanted to present this data as it is a good representation of the entire bulls feeding program. To ensure this data was not skewed we only looked at sales in February and March. There are still many other factors that need to be evaluated on farm when looking at sale weight and how you can improve it. At the end of the day this graph helps show that a Country Junction feeding program can be valuable in maximizing growth performance.

Right Way FAMILY OF FEEDS
RIGHT WAY GAINS WITHOUT THE GRAINS The Right Way family of beef feeds are bull and heifer development pellets designed to provide the energy required for good growth in most classes of cattle without using starch as a primary energy source. The energy source in these rations come from highly digestible fibers, whereas many other rations utilize starch as an energy source. Country Junction Feeds Right Way rations are designed to enhance a long and productive life in beef cattle. The use of digestible fibers in a pellet helps promote a rumen population capable of efficient forage digestion. One of the principles of ruminant nutrition is to feed the rumen itself. Feeding a fiber-based diet helps limit pH fluctuations that can occur when feeding a high starch supplement, which in turn reduces the risk of acidosis. Why not just feed forages? With a diet consisting of only forages growth rates will typically be too low, and you may not reach your cattle’s full genetic potential. Fibers supplied by your forages are not very digestible and function more as filler that stimulates rumination. That is why Right Way Beef rations are a perfect fit using digestible fiber as the foundation for the ration. These pellets can provide similar energy levels to grain without the high starch levels. Bulls and heifers are developed to become the cornerstone of any cow/calf operation, so it makes sense to feed them in a way to balance performance and longevity.

C O U N T RY
Not only do Right Way rations provide protein and energy but they also deliver minerals, vitamins and yeast. All Right Way rations contain chelated trace minerals along with additional vitamin A, D, and E. Chelated minerals are designed to be absorbed at higher rates than regular trace minerals. Chelated trace minerals can also improve mineral status when water quality is an issue, as chelated minerals are less likely to become unavailable to cattle in the rumen. The higher absorption rates are correlated to better scarotal development than with a conventional trace mineral package. Better mineral absorption also can help boost immune status of animals. The added yeast also promotes immune health and digestive function by limiting oxygen in the rumen to promote growth of beneficial bacteria. The Right Way family of feeds is a safe and healthy way to help improve performance on your operation. If you’re ever unsure don’t hesitate to contact any of our sales representatives and we are glad to answer your questions.

Scrotal Measurements SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS With scrotal circumferences having such a huge impact in any purebred breeders’ bottom line, we can’t emphasize enough how Right Way rations can play such an important role. With ingredients such as chelated minerals, added selenium, and a well-balanced protein/energy ration, we have seen increases in scrotal circumferences and earlier maturity in these sale bulls. The overall average of all Country Junction fed bulls is 38.5 cm,
C O U N T RY
WITH RITE WAY
while non-Country Junction fed bulls is 38cm, a difference of 0.5cm.
2022 marks the 17th year that we have been following scrotal measurements with the Right Way ration. It is ever-evolving and we will be continuing to frequently study the results of this program.
