OFFERING QUALITY ANGUS, HEREFORD, SIMMENTAL & F1 CROSS BULLS
WELCOME FROM THE
Trefiak Family
W e wish to extend the warmest welcome to our friends, neighbours, and fellow cattlemen to join us for our 28th annual Bull Sale at the farm. There is no doubt that 2021 has been a challenging year in so many respects but ranch families are the most resilient and courageous people in the world. We are so thankful to be associated with the great families that make up this industry.
To recap 2021, we put up feed in more ways than we ever have before and we were lucky to have some decent carry over that will leave us with tight, but adequate supplies to winter the herd. In speaking with some industry experts, the signs all point to a price strengthening for the producer in the next few years to come, which is welcome news. We are fortunate to have such a deep set of bulls to offer to meet a challenging year. We are confident that this set is as strong as any we have ever raised. They are deep, stout, and great footed, and come from a very strong set of females. They have been fun to raise, and we have developed them to go out and work. These are real cattle that are designed to last. Buying a bull is about adding value to your calves and your cow herd, and we appreciate the choice to invest in our program.

That said, they are bulls and there can be problems. We know you are making a significant investment and we want you to know that you can have piece of mind if there is a problem. We strive to be number one on customer service. If your bull breaks down in the first season for any reason, we want to be the first know and we will get you one as quickly as possible to use. If the problem is genetic or structural, we will replace the bull or provide a sale credit without question, at your preference.

CALVING EASE We have spent a lot of years selecting for calving ease, and selecting for genetics that allow for calving ease without sacrificing performance. Many customers use our bulls on their first calvers. When we started the ‘Back to the Basics’ Bull Sale we made a system to help you when choosing your next heifer bull. When we grade the bulls, we are fairly conservative. Some of our customers with larger framed cattle successfully ‘level up’ as they get to know our program. Mick has always said, he won’t sell a bull he wouldn’t calve out himself. The system is based on the following... BW in pounds Consistency of sire’s BW Consistency of dam’s BW Consistency of calving ease of both sire & dam
Reccomended for cows only Reccomended for cows or larger framed heifers Reccomended for heifers Always keep in mind 50% of your calf’s BW relates back to his dam.
ALL BULLS ARE FULLY VACCINATED, INCLUDING FUSOGARD FOR FOOTROT PREVENTION.

MEET OUR TEAM
The
mjt team They are not staff, they are family. We know there is no way we could do this without them. We have been blessed the past few years with amazing help on the crop side of our operation, as well as a ‘fall crew’ for the show season that we wouldn’t trade for the world. A little over a year ago, we made the decision to look for a couple of employees that were looking for a longerterm employment situation that would bring continuity to our operation. This will allow us to be on the road a bit more evaluating genetics to add to our program across the breeds, as well as freeing up some time to spend with our valued customers.
Pierre & Ilette
coetzer
Pierre and Ilette immigrated to Canada from South Africa in January of last year. Their journey here has been one of courage and determination and we see that extend to their efforts here every day. They dearly love their home country and miss their many friends and amazing family but made the very difficult choice to start over to ensure their 3 beautiful children are secure and have the freedom to explore and learn without fear. Ilette is a terrific stockperson with a great eye that she is putting to use here with photography as well as training horses and dogs. Pierre has become the resident handy-man and has built many miles of fence, added many lifts of windbreak boards, welded panels, fixed vehicles, ran combine, baled all the straw and pretty well figures just about anything out that comes his way. We are so fortunate to have them here. On sale day, please introduce yourselves to a wonderful couple with so much to share of their homeland and of themselves.
Larissa
lupul
Larissa joined us in August and has been a great asset to all things cattle here at the ranch. Her enthusiasm and knowledge is well respected by many cattlemen across the prairies. She has always had a special interest in the Hereford breed, but she has a good eye and a love for the great ones no matter the color. She was mentored by two of the best in Dennis Babiuk (NCX Polled Herefords) and Harvey Duke (Wascana Cattle Company) and her excellent appraisal of cattle comes from those two legends of the breed. She has been a quick study of the cow herd and if you have any questions about the bulls or cowherd you can count on her to offer an honest appraisal. We are very grateful to have Larissa so involved and contributing so much to our program.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
O
n years like this when feed reserves are marginal, more then ever we recognize the importance of knowing there is a positive return for every dollar spent. At MJT we make every effort to ensure that there is value in your bull buying dollar, be it through our bull development program which ensures the most longevity possible, or our consistent emphasis on sensible birth weights to ensure live calves, minimal labour and high breed back percentages. Our cattle are raised with the basics in mind with a primary focus on the needs of the commercial cattleman. Basics are what have made the Hereford and Angus breeds attractive for generations. We feel our commitment to this should help you, the rancher, produce predictable and profitable cattle using MJT genetics. We feel that having kept the basics of the cattle business at the forefront of our program is what has built both our herd and reputation. We won’t compromise our principals to chase trends or for short term gain in our own pockets. We believe the most economically important traits for the cow/calf producer are still all about the fundamentals... fertility, longevity, structure, soundness and fleshing ability. MJT isn’t in this for the short haul. We have been in the “Bull Business” for four generations and this is our 28th sale at home. The philosophy has evolved over the years and we feel that the cattle are continuing to improve and are now more consistent than ever. We believe good cattle can sell themselves and we try to offer a good selection of bulls that are affordable to the needs and budget of every rancher. We run the cow herd and the bulls like a commercial outfit, testing the do-ability, winter hardiness, fertility, udder quality and longevity under real world conditions. We know our cows can wean a respectable calf crop under almost any conditions. We strive for low input management, and our cow herd has proven it can graze nearly year round. Usually the mature Spring calving cow herd is fed mechanically for only a few weeks at calving.

28th annual back to the basics bull sale
MJT bulls are developed gently with their futures in mind. We expect that the bull you buy looks better on sale day than in the photo in the catalog and that he will look better the day we deliver him than the day you bought him. We just see this as normal development and will not overfeed to get them fat for the sale. We want you to be able to see what each animal has to offer under his hide, so you can pick the best fit for your cow herd. Gradual development in large pastures and big pen sizes ensures mobility, athleticism, and skeletal strength. All bulls are coming Two Year Olds; bulls that can cover more ground, breed more cows and maintain their stature better than a yearling bull. We consciously make low use of AI breeding. Selecting a new herd bull is an intense process. We make many miles and believe that the homework on the dam, the related offspring and the actual bull himself are critical. As we investigate and analyze each new breeding piece that we add we also find ourselves more and more looking back at our own yearling pen and cowherd to move our program forward. For 28 years we have selected for consistent birthweights, and focused on soundness and foot structure. We truly believe the females are the pillars of a herd, and our main focus is always building better females. Moving our main group to late spring calving has pushed us even further in our focus on udder quality. So why not just AI? When we buy a live bull and walk him with our cows we get to see all the other traits that don’t show up on a photo or a stat sheet. This allows us to be the first to know if any problems arise and allows us to cull accordingly. We hear much concern with foot and leg structure in today’s cattle. As far as we can tell, the surest way to verify long term structure and breeding soundness is to walk our dams and sires and be very critical of anything that might develop. As a result, 0% of MJT sale bulls have had their feet
“WE DON’T RAISE SHOW CATTLE, WE SHOW CATTLE WE RAISE.” trimmed. On sale day the pens will be nicely bedded but we always leave some open ground so that you can assess our emphasis on foot quality for yourself. We don’t raise show cattle, we show cattle we raise. We have often debated about the merits of showing cattle. We worry that there are times in the industry where it becomes tempting to compromise on the fundamentals in favor of competition. However, there are also many benefits it affords. First and foremost, it helps develop our kids. The learning and opportunities that our industry provides agricultural youth in the show environment is second to none. The relationships that the kids make will last far longer than any ribbons they win. We have discovered that the enthusiasm of the younger generations can take you further than you ever thought possible. Secondly, for our own development. When we get to the shows, it’s a community unlike any other….graced with so many competitive yet thoughtful, caring, strong, fun and hardworking people. The exchange of ideas about what works and what doesn’t can’t help but
make everyone involved a better stockman. Thirdly, it allows us a great opportunity to assess multiple genetics in an efficient manner. Kurt and Mick spend a lot of time through the barns looking for both positive and negative patterns in progeny, to assist us with our own genetic selection. Last, but not least, the cattle we show are cattle from our program and getting them in show condition allows us to demonstrate the results our customers can expect from our genetics when fed on a higher plane of nutrition. It reinforces our confidence that our genetics have enough muscle, depth of body and quality to remain relevent in today’s cattle industry. We hear from many customers, that show cattle don’t work for them. We have made a commitment to showcase the genetics we raise for our commercial buyers, and will not compromise on our fundamentals. MJT cattle are sold with 100% guarantee and we strive to be #1 on service. We know sometimes things go wrong with bulls and if you have trouble we want to be the first to know.
BULLS ARE FED WITH THEIR FUTURES IN MIND! THEY ARE ON PASTURE FOR SUMMER AND FALL GRAZING. IN WINTER BULLS ARE FED HAYLAGE, A LIGHT WHOLE OAT RATION AND CORN SILAGE. WE DON’T USE PROCESSED GRAIN AND PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTS FOR SALE ANIMALS. ALL BULLS MUST PASS A BREEDING AND SOUNDNESS EVALUATION.

NEW AT MJT!
THE CHAROLAIS HERD W e have long discussed our philosophy on breeding cattle for the commercial cow man and have always believed that one of the most
economically beneficial practices is the use of crossbreeding. This leads us to believe that each breed should focus on what makes them great, working towards improvement on a couple of weaknesses, and not try to be all things to all people. When it comes to looking at the Charolais, the breed has done this as well as any breed out there. There is still that strong natural growth pattern that adds pounds in the fall and converts great in the feedlot. By adding in some moderation to the birth weights and adding the associated calf vigor the commercial acceptance has really taken off. We felt that we wanted to be part of the breed to offer a unique product that matches the philosophy of our bull sale. Concentrate on the basics… strong mothers, excellent foot quality, keeping a good touch of docility. We plan to offer the bulls as long yearlings that can breed more cows, hold their condition, and ultimately provide better bull buying value.

28th annual back to the basics bull sale
When we started looking for a set of cows, we had to find the right cows that would work to calve in April/May. This meant a set that weren’t overly managed and had been selected for long enough to be cows that could calve with as little assistance as possible. When we toured the herd at Pleasantview Farms with Brent and Tyler Fischer, we were impressed by the maternal quality. It became apparent they managed the cows like a commercial operation. It is not by accident as they run 500 commercial cows as well as the purebreds. It turned out that the cows were just what we were looking for… good footed, practical, productive cows that can just get along and do their job. We were able to make a deal with Brent and Tyler that would have us buy 60 females that would be the foundation of our new herd. As well, we have invited them to join in our future bull sales with a good group of top end bulls to help improve the selection of Char bulls on offer. Unfortunately, we won’t have any Charolais bulls in the offering this year but will have over 20 Two-Year olds in 2023. We are excited about the breed, the cows and these bull calves so if you want to have a look, we would be happy to tour you at any time.

Rocky has had so much success in the show ring, himself being ultimately crowned World Champion Hereford Bull in 2019. He has shown us he is even better in the real world siring both heifers and bulls that are consistently good as any bull we have ever used. Daughters are coming into production and from the looks of what we can see right now his ability to sire great ones is about to be as legendary as himself. A bull so well rounded you can sleep easy calving them as they come right in that 85-90 pound range, marked right, cherry red and get growing right away.

They don’t come any more stout and honest than this guy. He sure does weigh up. Out of the 15C cow we purchased from Blairs.Ag, where she did a lot of good for their operation, and sired by the extremely well received Royal bull. This is a bull that has a lot to like. He’s deep bodied, dark colored, and his dam is the outstanding producer and matron of the 2018 World Champion Hereford, Rocky, himself. Past customers are no strangers to his sire Lincoln, whose offspring have been extremely well received and we think 615 may be one of the strongest we’ve offered yet. This is a great opportunity to get into a maternally powered bloodline and also own the People’s Choice Champion Bull at the Alberta Hereford Showcase in Red Deer this year. A true beef bull that is as easy keeping as they come. Anyone who has seen him remembers him as being one of the roundest and big barreled bulls they have ever seen. He is a pet thanks to his breeder Calla at Blairswest and his offspring have shown us no indication of any attitude which was our only concern given some others’ experience with his sire. His dam, Erica 74A is probably the most recognizable Angus cow in Canada, and perhaps also the most desireable. She is truly a great one and we look forward to calving out our first daughters.

He earned the title of Reserve Champion Black Angus Bull at Farmfair in 2018, where Southview Ranch purchased half interest out of the stall, as well as Champion Sr. Bull calf at CWA and Show Calf of the Year. He is stout, big topped and easy keeping. He’s big footed, big boned, and so free moving about his skeleton for the amount of power he has. Out of the great Essence 7Y cow from Miller Wilson Angus, he’s royally bred to make front pasture females and by the looks of his calves they’re going to be exactly that.

We selected this big fella’s momma, 824B, from Gus Garnier’s dispersal in December 2019. This SAV Bismarck daughter is a beautiful breeding female that anyone would love in their pasture. She was bred to Musgrave Sky High 1535 and when you check this boy out it’s easy to see that Gus made a darn good choice. Lots to like.

This fella’s momma had twin bulls, and both are in the sale. We did try to put this boy on a replacement cow, but he got out of the corral and headed back out to the pasture to find his real momma. These boys maybe don’t have as much as they could have but are good, useful bulls that would work on heifers. You have to love it when these old cows keep bringing good bulls to the sale. You never should pick a favourite cow but if we did 403Z would be right up there! The Kodiak 53’07 daughters are the best. This fella is almost an end of May, and you have to appreciate his muscle and length. Makes a complete package for any rancher.

A Frontier late May fella that is medium framed and long sided with a nice muscle pattern. He is definitely going to be a power bull when he is mature. His dam, 558Z, has never given us a heifer calf but her boys always make the sale pen and represent her in a big way with real nice one last year, and this attractive bull again this year.

We had bull trouble in the pasture, so we got 121D back from our partner. There was one cycle left in our breeding season and he got the job done. His whole sire group was born late May. This big rascal will go out and do the job you want him to. His momma is another good Shade daughter who produced a big soggy calf her first time around, that bull made quite a few friends that year and we hope the same will happen with this boy here.

(Hereford Plus) We only have 1 Baldy and boy he is flat good. He’s out of a good old A cow with lots of longevity and bred with some of our Angus greats. Some will recognize Abe, Traveller and Wisecrack in her pedigree. This mating with Hanson really worked. Lots of body to this guy and about as well made as they come. There are lots of ways to breed these black baldies when they are this good.

(Hereford Plus) This guy is an interesting Herford/Angus cross that doesn’t really reveal a lot of the Hereford influence with just two ticks of white on his face. The quality is high with this guy and we sure think the Hereford is a positive influence. An affordable option with a lot of upside.

(Simm/Angus) We really like these Sim/Angus cross bulls. These bulls still look Angus but have a little extra bone and width over the top. Here’s a bull that scores high in all our ratings with a deep body, good foot and good hair. There just aren’t any holes in him and we are darn confident the daughters are certain to make great replacements.
