Sun Rise Simmentals Complete Dispersal

Sun Rise Simmentals is located on the original Cuss farm site in the RM of Spy Hill, Saskatchewan, where John and Phyllis Cuss, Evan’s parents, operated a mixed cattle and grain farm. John and Evan’s curiosity was peaked by the Simmental breed and they saw that they could improve the quality of their herd by breeding their females Simmental.

The first Simmental bull they used was Lacombe Achilles by AI. John encouraged Evan to continue breeding Simmental Cattle, even by giving him his best half-blood heifer. They registered their first animal with the Canadian Simmental Association in 1974 – JTC Miss Milord 8F. AI has been a part of the operation every year since and embryo has become commonplace.

The first Simmental animals were registered under John T. Cuss and Son. It was Grandma Phyllis’s suggestion that the farm should be named Sun Rise Simmentals as she dearly enjoyed watching the sunshine stream into her kitchen from the east window as the sun rose each morning. In 1977, the farm name was officially changed to Sun Rise Simmentals.

Showing cattle was a high priority for Evan in the early Sun Rise days. Some of the highlights for him were winning Reserve Grand Champion Female at Canadian Western Agribition in 1983 with Candun Miss Signal 5P, Reserve Champion Female at Ag-Ex in 1991, winning the pen of 3 competition at Agribition in 1986, and many champions and high sellers at the Yellowhead Show and Sale in Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

In the early 1990’s Evan began to focus less on the show ring and more on the quality of his bullpen, starting with the use of Fleckvieh genetics, the solid red and black genetics. From the early 1990s to the early 2000s Evan and Linda fattened up to 900 feeder cattle every winter. This gave Evan an important perspective on the cattle industry and was a positive influence on planning the direction of his purebred herd. Evan was introduced to the Jan Bonsma Theory around this time, by Rick McIntyre, and this also shaped his ideas on what genetics he chose for his herd.

In 2013, Evan and Linda decided they wanted to lighten their workload and decided it was time to sell the bulk of his females. JP Cattle Company took interest and when the deal was done, Evan sold them all the females, with the exception of three cows and the heifer calves. We are thankful to them for purchasing the herd! The crew from JP have become great friends.

At this time, Evan and Linda also rented out most of their farmland. Now they had more time for the fun stuff – forging more friendships and connections with fellow cattle producers, attending more sales, and partnering with other breeders on exciting genetics, such as buying a flush out of the Agribition Champion female, LFE Sheila 82A, with Rancier Farms, and purchasing Spring Creek Brooke 68Z with Maxwell Simmentals. Slowly, since 2013, the herd has grown back to the size you see today.

This year, Evan and Linda decided to have a complete herd dispersal. While Evan still has a passion and interest for the cattle industry and the Simmental breed, they decided they wanted to have more time available to spend with their quickly growing grandkids in Alberta – and help with their 4-H projects. Duncan showed his first 4-H steer in 2021. In 2022 he showed a steer and a heifer in 4-H. In 2023, Braiden will be a 4-H Cleaver member, showing his first calf.

U.S. BUYERS INFORMATION

All purchases made that are going to the States will be charged $150/animal to cover the cost of export testing and paperwork to have animals ready to export. Trucking, U.S. Customs and Veterinarian charges will be the expense of the buyer. Buyers are welcome to pick up their purchases at the farm if they prefer.

The terms of this sale are cash, cheque, E-Transfer or wire transfer.

BREEDERS GUARANTEE

As this is a dispersal sale, all cattle sell with no further guarantee. Bull calves that are purchased and left at Sun Rise under the bull development program will carry a guarantee as mentioned in the details of the program.

DELIVERY/LOAD OUT

Full settlement must be made before cattle will be released. Cattle are to be picked up at the farm or trucking arranged. All purchases must be picked up prior to December 1, 2022. All cattle will be available for load out as soon as settlement has been made.

CALF WINTERING

We understand that buying bulls in November may not be the most convenient thing for everyone to do. So, we are offering a bull development program to assist in wintering and developing the bull calves for you. This option is only available for bull calf purchases.

The decision to participate in this program needs to made at time of settlement.

The cost of the bull development is $1,000 per bull and will be applied to your invoice at settlement.

Insurance is highly encouraged and will be available at time of settlement. Sun Rise Simmentals will not be liable for any injury, sickness or death of bulls left in our care without insurance.

All bulls are guaranteed to pass their semen tests by 15 months of age. We will work with the buyers according to their individual requirements for breeding timelines.

In the event a bull does not pass his semen test by 15 months of age, a full refund will be made in the amount of the purchase price plus the $1,000 bull development cost.

What a fitting way to lead off the catalogue with the world known, Brooke 68Z family, anchored by the matriarch herself. 68Z was a past high seller through the Golden Opportunity sale for $50,000 when we partnered up with Maxwell Simmentals to get her bought. Her already proven track record at the time being the dam behind Spark Plug, Ladies Man and Launch to name a few, made her a no brainer, donor quality dam, we knew we needed to own. Since her ownership changed, ourselves along with our partners have sold

many high selling sons such as Sun Rise Legal Custody 28H and NUG Jackpot 51J but as importantly, we have retained many high quality daughters to build off her legacy, as you will see as you flip through our book. 68Z progeny are consistently strong footed, with exceptional udder quality. Small in quantity, but high in quality is the “Lola” cow family. 642D has been a no miss female for us as she clicks every year no matter how she is bred leaving us marketable sons and high quality replacement daughters. Her Ladies Man daughter selling as lot 17 has done an

exceptional job on her first effort raising a high quality bull calf for the sale as lot 104. We feel the volume, mass and power is shown evident in this mother/daughter duo.

Arguably the most well know cow family that has called Sunrise Simmentals home, 45R has done it all. With 25 registered progeny, including herd bulls in purebred operations and top notch commercial outfits, 45R has been the backbone to our programs for a number of years. The “Taras” have been a huge influence at many operations including our own and as you flip through, you will see it is one of our largest families represented. This speaks to the high regard we have held this cow line in as they have been super productive and no nonsense type cattle that just flat out get the job done.

When we purchased the right to flush the great LFE Sheila 82A, it was an easy decision to flush her to Liner 56U, the great female maker. We thought 82A’s power and mass would be a nice combination with the maternal giant 56U and boy were we right. 29E and 27E were the results of this successful flush for us and they have quickly became a pair of pasture tour favourites. Their influence is very dominant in this offering with a very special heifer calf selling as lot 57.

After utilizing the Mindbender bull and falling in love with his progeny, we knew we needed to gain more influence from him, primarily because of his stunning dam, HF Tibbie 93U. We flushed her to Denali and ended up with these drop dead gorgeous sisters
